This episode discusses the tragic story of Michael Hooligan, who was fatally stabbed while trying to protect a woman outside the Friendship Inn pub in Middleton, Manchester. Key topics include the circumstances surrounding the incident, the impact on Michael's family, and the subsequent legal proceedings against his attacker, Timothy Deakin.

Michael Hooligan was described as a hardworking and caring individual, known for his humor and love for his family. His mother, Leslie, and father, Gary, share fond memories of him, highlighting his close relationship with his son, Alice, born shortly before his untimely death.

On October 14, 2016, Michael intervened when he saw Timothy Deakin assaulting his sister. This act of bravery led to Michael being stabbed five times, resulting in his death after three days in the hospital. The police investigation revealed Deakin's violent history and the chaos surrounding the incident.

Timothy Deakin was arrested and charged with murder, pleading not guilty and claiming self-defense. The trial included crucial evidence from CCTV footage, which showed the events leading to Michael's death. Ultimately, Deakin was found guilty and sentenced to 27 years in prison.

The episode emphasizes the emotional toll on Michael's family and the failures of the probation system that allowed Deakin to be on the streets despite his violent past. Leslie and Gary express their ongoing grief and the lasting impact of their loss.

TL;DR

Michael Hooligan was fatally stabbed while defending a woman, leading to a trial against his attacker Timothy Deakin.

00:00:43
think he would have settled down and

been successful

and yet there was this chance meeting
00:00:51
this twist of fate this decision that he

00:03:31
we've been a family of people look up to
00:03:34
and I really mean that
00:03:36
my intros are very popular a lot it was
00:03:38
a very likable lad like I say the
00:03:42
community said he he played football he
00:03:44
mixed them out with everyone he lived
00:03:46
with his Michael but he stayed with
00:03:48
friends as well
00:03:49
you know his friends have said oh lesla
00:03:53
he was the life and soul of the party or
00:03:55
Michael no matter where we went
00:03:57
it was a funny laugh my equally lost he
00:03:59
had a great sense of humor
00:04:01
since the clock had come and it come to
00:04:04
that window it was a big year in it he'd
00:04:06
go mum what we don't for tea you know
00:04:10
oh if me and gas was going so much sweet
00:04:12
he'd Go Mama I'm coming you know I've
00:04:15
got Romania now while I'm coming and I'm
00:04:18
going to bring Garden out I'm going to
00:04:19
bring such back here go on then
00:04:24
a lot of my boys work together because
00:04:26
one's a plasterer one's a kitchen fitter
00:04:28
and noodles with tails
00:04:31
my other son Christopher taught Michael
00:04:34
on as an apprentice to Tyler and it you
00:04:37
know it turned out to be quite good at
00:04:39
that
00:04:39
[Music]
00:04:41
he was tiling my bathroom upstairs
00:04:45
and my wife Leslie said to me
00:04:47
okay we could do the new bath so I said
00:04:50
there's nothing wrong with the math what
00:04:52
you're talking about
00:04:53
oh you do
00:04:55
so we went out when we come back Michael
00:04:58
had very conveniently I dropped a tail
00:05:01
through the bath
00:05:02
we tell his mum and says you've got your
00:05:04
new bath now and that was Michael he
00:05:07
loved his mother
00:05:10
everybody loved it you know it was a
00:05:13
character but he was a nice kid
00:05:18
they worked hard
00:05:19
and I'm very proud of him
00:05:22
Michael come on one day he said it's his
00:05:25
mother first and

00:05:37
it was an happy memory and a nappy
00:05:39

00:05:41

00:05:45

00:05:49

00:05:52
okay occasion never forget it bright
00:05:55

00:05:59
there at the hospital
00:06:02
with Alice when Alice was being born
00:06:06
and we're both there and we're both
00:06:08
crying all that moment to see his face
00:06:11
when he was delivered it was amazing
00:06:15
okay that lovely son loved him spent a
00:06:18
lot of time with him I think his future
00:06:21
was to you know settle down and
00:06:24
just get on my life and look after his
00:06:26
son
00:06:28
[Music]
00:06:36

00:06:39
he said I'm going out and I went right
00:06:41
that's fine let me know if you're coming
00:06:43
on because sometimes they'd stay with
00:06:44
his mates
00:06:48
that one decision
00:06:50
that Michael talk that day was going to
00:06:54
cost him his life and was going to turn
00:06:57
the lives of everyone who knew and loved
00:07:00
him completely upside down

00:07:19

what they've done and proper panicking
00:07:22

00:07:25
[Music]
00:07:26
on the Friday the 14th of October 2016
00:07:29
just around half past 11. a number of
00:07:32
calls I'm not mistaken were placed
00:07:34
through the Emergency Services through
00:07:35
to the ambulance service and the police
00:07:37
were dispatched
00:07:38
get as quickly as possible to the
00:07:41
Friendship him
00:07:42
so when officers had arrived there it
00:07:45
was a scene of chaos and didn't
00:07:46
disturbance as you can imagine people
00:07:47
were very upset
00:07:50
but amidst this there was one young man
00:07:52
there being stabbed very seriously
00:07:57
we was in the Houston room we're not
00:08:00
going out we was in bed and we got a
00:08:02
phone call for a girl who we knew
00:08:05
islia
00:08:10
I'm an area
00:08:15
no what
00:08:18
Michael
00:08:20
has been stopped outside the the
00:08:23
Friendship Pub
00:08:25
where we jumped out back you know we
00:08:27
never moved as quick
00:08:32
and I was just trying to kind of I can't
00:08:34
really remember what I was thinking or
00:08:36
what I want thinking I just knew I had
00:08:38
to get to that hospital because I had to
00:08:41
see if I had to make sure he was all
00:08:43
right
00:08:44
Michael was clearly losing blood and a
00:08:47
lot of blood particularly from his his
00:08:49
chest he he's his chest wound it would
00:08:52
have been very difficult for the police
00:08:53
to interpret precisely at that stage how
00:08:56
many stab wounds were dealing with
00:08:58
[Music]
00:09:06
I was like why and we knew something was
00:09:10
seriously wrong
00:09:12
but that Journey was it's the worst
00:09:15
Journey I've ever had
00:09:17
I'm just thinking of it they stabbed him
00:09:19
if they just stabbed him in the armor or
00:09:22
I didn't know where where I just didn't
00:09:24
know
00:09:26
what we've seen in the hospital was
00:09:32
playing
00:09:33
all we wanted to do was see Michael we
00:09:35
just wait to see we expected him to be
00:09:38

at the initial phase prior to the
00:10:23

00:10:26
attempted murder the severity was the
00:10:28
highest level really
00:10:38
[Music]
00:10:42
Middleton is on the edge of the city of
00:10:46
Manchester it's uh it's a small area
00:10:49
which is part of a town called Rochdale
00:10:53
and there's quite a high concentration
00:10:56
of pubs
00:10:58
[Music]
00:11:00
the Friendship Inn is of particular
00:11:03
interest because in the previous years
00:11:05
there had been a number of violent
00:11:07
incidents there the pub already had a
00:11:10
reputation uh being
00:11:12
um about a a dangerous place to go if
00:11:15
you weren't a local
00:11:18
[Music]
00:11:20
in some murder cases of course it's
00:11:21
unknown it's it's a chance encounter or
00:11:24
a premeditated encounter and and the
00:11:26
police had the work cut out in terms of
00:11:29
determining who that that could be in
00:11:32
this particular case because of local
00:11:34
rebelism because the people that
00:11:36
actually seen or unfolded before their
00:11:37
very eyes we knew almost from the offset
00:11:42
um who was responsible likely
00:11:44
responsible for this attack
00:11:45
[Music]
00:11:51
all
00:11:52
police were able to build up a picture
00:11:54
from the number of people that were
00:11:55
outside the pub the attacker was a man
00:11:58
called Timothy deakin we knew that he
00:12:00
had
00:12:01
departed Manchester he'd looked to
00:12:03
escape Justice almost from the offset
00:12:06
but once we knew who he was we know we
00:12:09
were determined to catch him
00:12:12
we not heard of him ever you know when
00:12:15
we found out his name never heard of him
00:12:17
who is it
00:12:19
[Music]
00:12:24
I just I don't know what I was thinking
00:12:27
but I weren't
00:12:29
I weren't thinking that it was that it
00:12:32
was that critical because they put him
00:12:34
in a reduced coma and I didn't know that
00:12:36
whether they did sell Rihanna and it had
00:12:39
not gone in I don't know because I can't
00:12:41
really
00:12:43
I was in a bit of a state to say the
00:12:45
least you know
00:12:47
um I don't really know whether they told
00:12:49
me or they didn't can't remember to be
00:12:51
fair
00:12:56
it was there three days at the hospital
00:13:00
we didn't know what was going on we were
00:13:02
watching him and he it was horrible to
00:13:05
see a lot he was full of life to
00:13:08
him asleep
00:13:09
Gary and Leslie hooligan were in bed
00:13:12
middle of the night when they received a
00:13:14
phone call that their son had been
00:13:17
stabbed and was in the hospital and they
00:13:19
knew that Michael was not a troublemaker
00:13:21
he was a good kid he was smart
00:13:25
so you can imagine the fear and panic
00:13:28
they had why in the world would he have
00:13:30
been in the situation that he was harmed
00:13:33
like this what could have gone wrong and
00:13:35
what was going to happen next
00:13:42
you can pull through this he had a big
00:13:45
stop in London
00:13:46
you can pull through this and we spent
00:13:49
on three days
00:13:55
[Music]
00:13:57
we knew we knew if anyone's going to
00:13:59
pull to it'd be Michael
00:14:04
[Music]
00:14:07
I was working for a regional television
00:14:11
station and it was a Saturday morning
00:14:15
that morning we had a series of emails
00:14:17
from all the regional police forces and
00:14:20
one of them came from greater Manchester
00:14:22
police that said that being is stabbing
00:14:24
outside of a pub in Middleton
00:14:27
um called the Friendship Inn
00:14:30
the police approached us and asked us to
00:14:33
put out witness appeals on the evening
00:14:36
bulletins for Timothy deakin in a bid
00:14:39
for them to track this person down who'd
00:14:42
effectively run away from the scene and

was fleeing Justice this was a Manhunt

00:14:57

00:14:59

00:15:05
you know seeing a family
00:15:07
devastated and broken
00:15:10
desperate for any glimmer of hope
00:15:13
that their loved one could could turn
00:15:16
around despite the medical medical sort
00:15:19
of diagnosis here
00:15:21
um you know it's really it really
00:15:23
affects you when you see that you can't
00:15:25
help with The Human Side
00:15:28
get close to to wanting to see Justice
00:15:32
for the hooligan family
00:15:36
Timothy deakin was already a number of
00:15:39
steps ahead because natural he knew what
00:15:41
he'd done before we even knew he was but
00:15:43
sadly at that particular time Michael
00:15:44
was in an extremely poorly way
00:15:48
Michael he'd gone out
00:15:50
to a place he never went to funny enough
00:15:54
he never went in the pond the friendship
00:15:58
there was CCTV at the pub that everyone
00:16:00
had been in so that was vital because
00:16:03
we're able to build up an understanding
00:16:04
of what's taking place we're able to
00:16:06
understand who was wearing what who was
00:16:08
stood with whom
00:16:10
how the sequencing had unfolded
00:16:14
and and the camera doesn't lie
00:16:20
and an argument had broken out between
00:16:23
two drunken groups in the back room that
00:16:26
Michael uh
00:16:28
had The Misfortune of sitting in to have
00:16:31
his drink the Catalyst for Deacon being
00:16:34
called was nothing more than his
00:16:38
girlfriend being out with his sister and
00:16:41
his girlfriend believing she overheard a
00:16:43
disparaging comment that was made
00:16:45
towards her
00:16:46
nothing more than that
00:16:53
Deacon had been drinking at the summit
00:16:55
which was a pub not far away and one of
00:17:00
the grew had effectively reached out to
00:17:02
Tim Deacon and said yes sister's a mess
00:17:04
could you come and get a home please
00:17:07
he had been told by his girlfriend that
00:17:09
a group of lads had said disparaging
00:17:13
things towards her that his sister had
00:17:15
abandoned her that hadn't come outside
00:17:17
and left her on her own Deacon came in
00:17:21
he went out outside with his drunk
00:17:25
sister
00:17:26
to get her a cab to take her home
00:17:32
one of the regulars who'd been outside
00:17:34
having a cigarette came in to say
00:17:36
there's a bloke outside who's who's
00:17:38
battering a woman and Michael being
00:17:40
Michael stepped up and went outside and
00:17:44
you can see just from the edge of the
00:17:47
CCTV that it is at that point when he
00:17:51
steps outside
00:17:52
that Timothy deakin
00:17:55
beat dexa and he knocks a spark out and
00:17:59
at that point the cab rocks up and he's
00:18:01
dragging her by her hair into the cap
00:18:05
Michael was the first to approach
00:18:08
Deacon and try and stop him attacking
00:18:11
his own sister
00:18:13
and at that point Michael stepped in and
00:18:16
effectively said what are you doing you
00:18:18
don't treat women like that
00:18:21
and in a very very short space of Time
00:18:24
Michael was stabbed five times with the
00:18:28
Loch knife
00:18:31
it was crucial that we told the family
00:18:34
this as difficult a piece of news as
00:18:36
that might be
00:18:38
it was in the poor man his own business
00:18:41
having a drink
00:18:42
someone shouted out and girls being beat
00:18:45
up outside and Michael he's been brawl
00:18:49
that you don't disrespect women you look
00:18:52
you're looking and he's been broken that
00:18:53
way
00:18:55
victims of something like a stabbing
00:18:57
tend to fall into two categories they're
00:18:59
either connected to the criminal
00:19:01
underworld like they might have ties
00:19:03
with certain gangs and they might get to
00:19:05
fights relatively regularly but on the
00:19:08
other hand you have people like Michael
00:19:09
who are just at the wrong place at the
00:19:12
wrong time in a context like trying to
00:19:14
stand up for somebody else that they
00:19:15
don't even know
00:19:21
just a crazy situation it's one that we
00:19:24
wish everyone you know we wouldn't have
00:19:26
been in at all you know
00:19:28
before you knew it news travel fast
00:19:31
told us we know who's done it you know I
00:19:34
was more afraid of him sort of escaping
00:19:37
and getting out of the country or
00:19:38
something you know because we knew that
00:19:39
Milan was in a bad way
00:19:46
but that was all in a room one day
00:19:50
[ __ ]
00:19:51
it's not working the treatment we're
00:19:54
giving him
00:19:55
there's nothing else we couldn't do
00:19:57
and I just sat there no
00:20:00
normally even with my
00:20:01
please don't see that don't say that
00:20:04
don't say that
00:20:05
[Music]
00:20:08
just turn everything off and it's
00:20:11
pronounced dead
00:20:14
is the worst
00:20:17
[Music]
00:20:22
oh bear with us
00:20:26
the most news you could ever be told
00:20:29
believe me
00:20:33
losing him was the worst day of my life
00:20:35
because you'd always bet your children's
00:20:37
school before you do you know
00:20:39
it was horrible and I just remember
00:20:46
if we make
00:20:47
[Music]
00:20:51
near the tear coming down his cheek and
00:20:54
it just
00:20:55
took me I done this just to give him a
00:20:57
big hook
00:21:01
[Music]
00:21:07
oh
00:21:08
you can't describe it see you soon
00:21:11
asleep in hospital
00:21:15
and you can
00:21:17
you can't speak to him because he's not
00:21:19
there
00:21:21
the parents of Michael hooligan had to
00:21:23
take that horrific decision to switch
00:21:26
the life support machine off which
00:21:28
instantly moved this from a serious
00:21:31
wounding actual bodily harm into a whole
00:21:34
different category this was now a murder
00:21:40
Michael's homicide had a full
00:21:42
investigative team that were going to
00:21:44
work around the clock
00:21:46
and do everything they possibly could
00:21:49
catch
00:21:51
Michael's killer
00:21:55
[Music]
00:21:56
and looking at the nature of this
00:21:58
particular crime
00:22:00
would give any investigative experience
00:22:02
the impression that it had been
00:22:04
committed by a man who was no stranger
00:22:07
to violence
00:22:11
well I was flying to death I think if
00:22:15
you like to know what goes through your
00:22:16
head when you don't realize
00:22:19
stupid
00:22:23
[Music]
00:22:25
the third wife they don't find him
00:22:27
foreign
00:22:39
Against Time from the moment we have a
00:22:41
suspect an identify and suspect we know
00:22:43
there is a chance that with every
00:22:45
passing hour day week that we see a
00:22:49
deterioration of the evidence as well as
00:22:50
the deliberate disposal of evidence
00:22:53
here you had a violent offender who had
00:22:55
gone on the wrong this was someone who
00:22:57
was prepared to use violence and a knife
00:23:01
so it was crucial to the police that we
00:23:05
apprehended him as quickly as we
00:23:06
possibly could
00:23:12
15th of August
00:23:14
1989. that's an absolute beautiful
00:23:17
picture
00:23:22
[Music]
00:23:24
really nice
00:23:26
[Music]
00:23:27
my family means the wheels to me for
00:23:29
everything to me so yeah we had it was
00:23:32
you know we had a nice life
00:23:34
[Music]
00:23:37
all right
00:23:40
the week before it happened we was I was
00:23:43
getting ready to go out on a Friday
00:23:44
night and I was getting ready in my
00:23:46
bedroom and Michael was getting a DNA's
00:23:48
bedroom and I had the radio on
00:23:51
and Andy Williams came on singing you're
00:23:55
just too good to be true so I'm thinking
00:23:58
at the top of my voice because I think I
00:24:00
can sing even though I can and he comes
00:24:02
off the landing doing this dressed in a
00:24:04
dead smart blue shirt and jeans
00:24:06
[Music]
00:24:10
it was just such a sweet memory you know
00:24:14
just
00:24:16
just wish I could have more of it
00:24:18
just wish I could
00:24:20
I just really wish I could just put my
00:24:22
arms around him and just give him a big
00:24:27
Club
00:24:30
[Music]
00:24:35
so please come to our house and tell us
00:24:37
all about this life and they said that
00:24:39
he was you know he's a bad lad the man
00:24:41
who who killed my son had gone on the
00:24:44
Run
00:24:46
and they said he's gone on their own but
00:24:49
we will find him
00:24:51
[Music]
00:24:53
after I done to Michael avoid it more
00:24:56
than ever you know get him off the
00:24:58
street please
00:25:01
as a result of really detailed police
00:25:03
inquiries and intelligence
00:25:06
we tracked Deacon to an address in
00:25:07
Liverpool
00:25:09
he was possibly surprised that we got to
00:25:12
him so quickly but it was very clear
00:25:15
that he knew why we were there and what
00:25:18
this was about
00:25:21
on a Wednesday the 19th of October he
00:25:24
was arrested on suspicion of Michael's
00:25:26
murder
00:25:29
when the founders and told us they'd
00:25:31
actually arrested him in Liverpool we
00:25:33
were so relieved I believe maybe it was
00:25:36
we were thanking God for this but don't
00:25:38
help you right so now because it is just
00:25:41
destroyed my family
00:25:43
the devastation the East Coast my family
00:25:46
and his friends an Army Family he's
00:25:49
horrific
00:25:52
Michael's son who's only four
00:25:55
and he didn't know what was going on and
00:25:58
unfortunately I had to tell him and it
00:26:01
says you don't see any then again kid
00:26:03
anyone
00:26:04
all right didn't understand so it says
00:26:08
no God's come down for him
00:26:10
and Alice obviously oblivious to the
00:26:13
fact that his dad had been killed
00:26:15
but after a while he thought about it he
00:26:17
says
00:26:19
can we go to the airport we get an
00:26:21
helicopter and then go and see me dead
00:26:23
in the sky
00:26:24
well we broke down all of us say it was
00:26:27
aim is horrible to it it shows you the
00:26:30
way he was thinking
00:26:34
[Music]
00:26:35
are my bias about the pleasure rubbing
00:26:38
their dad are their life and he's got
00:26:40
that taken away from him and that
00:26:42
I hate that thought
00:26:47
voice talk
00:26:48
to us is
00:26:51
done to this family
00:26:54
it's tried a lot of things that was
00:26:55
going which were positive and which was
00:26:58
perfect it's destroyed our ad
00:27:02
Timothy deakin was arrested an address
00:27:05
in Liverpool
00:27:06
deacon
00:27:08
chose not to say anything to the police
00:27:11
he provided what's known as a no common
00:27:13
interview
00:27:14
and didn't answer any question that that
00:27:16
was presented before him
00:27:20
it was a great relief when we eventually
00:27:23
heard from the police that they picked
00:27:25
this man up
00:27:26
and that he was due to face Justice and
00:27:30
he was going to appear at magistrates
00:27:32
Court the next day
00:27:36
once we swept the area through our
00:27:39
crimes and examinations and through
00:27:41
members of the public that came forth
00:27:42
actually were able to recover that knife
00:27:44
and it was so very very important to
00:27:46
this investigation not only did we have
00:27:50
the weapon that that sadly and
00:27:53
tragically cost Michael his life but
00:27:56
from a forensic position we're able to
00:27:58
connect that knife with the actual
00:28:01
injuries
00:28:04
people saying to us Middleton has gone
00:28:07
in mourning over my trip
00:28:09
all the shots that's all he was talking
00:28:11
about the death of me son
00:28:16
everyone said it the funeral director
00:28:18
who's never seen anything like it ever
00:28:20
seen a funeral as big as that
00:28:22
the police said he's never seen the
00:28:24
church
00:28:26
I just
00:28:28
absolutely amateur people
00:28:31
foreign
00:28:36
unreal again it was full the cemetery
00:28:40
you just couldn't believe it but these
00:28:42
things
00:28:43
you don't remember them as as clear as
00:28:47
what you should do because you can't you
00:28:49
can't take it you know you you're
00:28:51
burying your son and it it's just you
00:28:54
can't take it in
00:28:56
heartbreaking
00:29:03
very very quickly you can start to build
00:29:05
a profile of the attacker and and we
00:29:08
were very quickly able to establish who
00:29:11
Timothy Deacon was
00:29:14
internet searches provided us with
00:29:16
previous criminal history and Court
00:29:18
reports
00:29:24
[Music]
00:29:25
Timothy Deacon received a custodial
00:29:27
sentence from the course in relation to
00:29:30
to an offensive group of bodily harm
00:29:33
four years eight months he'd been
00:29:35
sentenced to for an unprovoked attack
00:29:38
biting a man's ear off in a in another
00:29:40
fight in a poll
00:29:43
but when a prisoners reached a certain
00:29:46
point in their sentence in the UK
00:29:48
Criminal Justice System they are
00:29:50
eligible for release
00:29:54
as a result of his license conditions he
00:29:57
would be released and would serve a
00:29:59
period of that on what they call license
00:30:01
but he would be subject to a series of
00:30:03
conditions to manage him in the
00:30:06
community
00:30:09
it's basically a contract that an
00:30:11
offender must sign that says I will
00:30:14
adhere to all these conditions and that
00:30:18
is called a license agreement
00:30:20
so daycare was my unlicensed when he was
00:30:23
determined to be the suspect in relation
00:30:25
to this crime so
00:30:28
um
00:30:30
that was that was awful news for the
00:30:32
family
00:30:32
[Music]
00:30:34
to me shouldn't have been out and
00:30:37
it was out
00:30:40
the man who done it to my Michael and to
00:30:43
me they should have kept him there
00:30:45
should keep him in there for life
00:30:47
[Music]
00:30:51
with this man Timothy Deacon carrying a
00:30:53
knife that suggests one of a couple of
00:30:55
things either he's so confident that his
00:30:58
probation officer is not going to find
00:31:00
out or do anything about it or he
00:31:02
literally doesn't care about the
00:31:04
consequences
00:31:09
the police investigation had in my
00:31:11
opinion created an extremely compelling
00:31:14
case that he was Michael's murderer
00:31:18
um and they committed other offenses too
00:31:21
you can never say never until that trial
00:31:23
was concluded
00:31:25
the trail is coming up in Bolton on a
00:31:29
certain days he seemed to take forever
00:31:31
so it was being one you've got the AV
00:31:34
court because you can imagine me songs
00:31:36
were fuming with this guy so it returns
00:31:39
up and Tim deakin appears in the back
00:31:42
the first time we've seen him
00:31:45
Show No Remorse whatsoever
00:31:48
looked at us with an evil an evil face
00:31:51
if anything you know pulled his face are
00:31:54
you looking at him and you're going
00:31:55
there I can't believe what we're we're
00:31:57
seeing it this kid doesn't care you know
00:31:59
Timothy Deacon was charged with murder
00:32:02
and he pleaded not guilty
00:32:04
Timothy deakin was going to introduce a
00:32:07
defense of self-defense
00:32:11
for Michael's family they're not used to
00:32:13
these criminal trials they don't know
00:32:14
what tactics the defense team are going
00:32:17
to use so they just don't know what to
00:32:18
expect we were singing call and
00:32:22
they're trying to game off this is what
00:32:24
is unreal to me he's admitted he's
00:32:27
killed me son and he's just trying to
00:32:30
get him off he's trying to say but we
00:32:31
didn't mean this did you we didn't mean
00:32:33
to go there or you didn't and it it was
00:32:36
he was fighting
00:32:39
the attempt was made to say that Michael
00:32:42
hoolikin was coming at me and that I
00:32:46
found this knife on the floor and that I
00:32:50
picked the knife up and in an effort to
00:32:53
defend myself I flailed around with it
00:32:56
and accidentally I killed him
00:32:59
I mean the streets of Middleton aren't
00:33:00
littered with knives so the idea that
00:33:03
somehow he
00:33:06
was actually the victim was
00:33:08
to be truthful Preposterous really
00:33:12
I was angry but I was more upset because
00:33:15
it was muscle
00:33:16
you know it really upset me the things I
00:33:20
heard in court
00:33:24
Michael was not bullying never picking
00:33:27
anyone it protects his mates he protects
00:33:29
his family which is which is normal for
00:33:32
me you know that's the way he's been
00:33:33
brought up but there's no way picking
00:33:36
anyone so he's not doing this you know
00:33:38
as a as a show enough of being cocky
00:33:41
he's doing it to protect that lady
00:33:48
foreign
00:33:52
the jury have a whole load of evidence
00:33:56
that they use to make their minds up
00:33:59
eyewitness police reports forensic
00:34:02
reports
00:34:05
want utterly crucial piece of evidence
00:34:08
that the trial of Timothy Deacon was the
00:34:10
CCTV which had been taken from outside
00:34:13
the Friendship Inn
00:34:16
what was caught on camera
00:34:19
were the last living moments of Michael
00:34:23
hooligan
00:34:25
[Music]
00:34:28
you see Timothy Deacon come into shot
00:34:31
here we see
00:34:33
Tim Deacon inside there and then he's
00:34:36
about to leave the pogbies
00:34:38
taking his sister home
00:34:40
here you see the argument spills out
00:34:42
into the street
00:34:46
oh
00:34:49
and he's just slapped his sister
00:34:52
so hard that she collapses in the street
00:34:56
he hits her
00:34:58
so hard you see a cigarette fly out of
00:35:02
her mouth across the street and she
00:35:04
falls to the ground
00:35:06
it's at this point just out of view
00:35:10
that Michael emerges from the pub
00:35:13
Michael challenged Timothy Deacon when
00:35:16
he saw Deacon battering his sister and
00:35:20
Deacon stepped up to him
00:35:22
and Michael got the better of him and
00:35:25
knocked him to the ground as Deacon came
00:35:27
at him
00:35:28
Tim deakin's defense was that
00:35:32
um he fell to the ground and that the
00:35:34
lock knife was on the floor
00:35:37
that it wasn't taken with him to the
00:35:42
scene to sort out any trouble
00:35:47
but at some stage here
00:35:50
and I think that's it you see him take
00:35:52
something out of his pocket and it
00:35:54
changed his hands from one hand to the
00:35:56
other there he is pulling the lock knife
00:35:58
out of his pocket
00:36:01
Timothy Deacon was just acting in
00:36:03
self-defense one stab would be more than
00:36:06
enough that would say stay away from me
00:36:08
you know stand back but that wasn't the
00:36:11
case here the fact that he stabbed
00:36:12
Michael five times shows this was line
00:36:16
rage this was an anger driven offense
00:36:18
not out of self-defense
00:36:20
you've heard the evidence in court you
00:36:22
want this to go the right way but you
00:36:24
can never call a jury you can never say
00:36:28
from being outside of the sanctity of
00:36:31
that jewelry room whether there is
00:36:33
somebody within that group who believes
00:36:34
that Reasonable Doubt has been sown
00:36:38
[Music]
00:36:41
we've been through all this
00:36:44
Trail
00:36:45
and it just I was like I hope to God
00:36:48
they never let him out ever
00:36:51
not while I'm on this Earth anyway or
00:36:53
they never let him out
00:36:54
this is so difficult for families to
00:36:56
endure and the only thing they keep
00:36:58
thinking is to for it to all to be worth
00:37:00
it that person has to be found guilty
00:37:04
when you get the knock
00:37:06
on the door as the jury Foreman comes
00:37:09
back into court and the judge asks have
00:37:13
you reached a verdict and is that
00:37:15
verdict unanimous there is a flip even
00:37:18
as a journalist that goes in your
00:37:21
stomach
00:37:23
the final verdict was that Timothy
00:37:25
Deacon was found guilty of murder
00:37:28
this was the judge
00:37:30
I was the one who would give you four
00:37:31
years last time he said so I'm putting
00:37:34
you away for 27 years minimum well you
00:37:37
could see the relief of the police
00:37:39
officers
00:37:40
everyone in the court you could see the
00:37:43
relief I'd like to say yes
00:37:45
it's been given a long time
00:37:47
it was only at Timothy deakin's
00:37:49
sentencing that we realized that he
00:37:52
breached his license conditions and that
00:37:55
he shouldn't have been out at that time
00:37:57
of night
00:37:58
oh this is when everything come out it
00:38:01
was frightening and I mean this it was
00:38:04
frightening
00:38:06
it was unclear for you what was he doing
00:38:09
in the pub that night
00:38:11
well I did nobody
00:38:13
slack up why I did nothing flag up that
00:38:16
he was out in the pub
00:38:21
and it was only at the point in
00:38:23
sentencing that part of the truth
00:38:25
actually came out that Deacon was a huge
00:38:29
risk to the public that he was classed
00:38:32
as a serious and prolific offender that
00:38:35
he had a catalog of violent defenses
00:38:37
already under his belt that he stood a
00:38:40
huge chance of reoffending and that the
00:38:44
probation service hadn't done their job
00:38:47
they hadn't been able to keep the public
00:38:50
safe from this violent and promising
00:38:52
offender and that is why Michael lost
00:38:56
his life
00:38:58
Timothy deakin was only 23 when he got
00:39:01
sentenced of course there's an age-old
00:39:04
debate when it comes to violence and
00:39:05
criminality nature versus nurture and I
00:39:09
think this is a classic example of
00:39:11
nurture
00:39:12
he was from a broken home he had not
00:39:16
attained an education so his life
00:39:19
outcomes were limited
00:39:24
[Music]
00:39:26
in the end while those are mitigating
00:39:28
factors they do not excuse cold-blooded
00:39:31
murder
00:39:31
[Music]
00:39:33
27 years
00:39:35
after sales menu
00:39:38
people are going to be safe without him
00:39:40
around so that was good news today
00:39:42
whatever sentence he was
00:39:45
and ultimately was given it genuinely
00:39:48
does pale into comparison when you when
00:39:50
you look at what is taken from that
00:39:52
family people say time to kneel no it's
00:39:56
not
00:39:57
Michael will be missed forever I promise
00:40:00
you
00:40:01
we always wonder where he is
00:40:04
times when you think you'll be in a
00:40:06
minute and you know he's not here these
00:40:09
are things that affect you mentally for
00:40:12
the rest of your life and not acceptable
00:40:15
he's just feels so angry it really upset
00:40:19
me the things I heard in court
00:40:22
about the math probation knew what type
00:40:25
of person he was he was a prolific
00:40:27
offender
00:40:29
you know
00:40:31
so why did they just let him slip
00:40:33
through the net
00:40:37
we said we need to do something about it
00:40:39
we've got to stop this thing happening
00:40:42
where people are getting murdered
00:40:43
unnecessary and we need a publicly
00:40:46
quietly about all these debts
00:40:48
till later they were
00:40:49
aspects of of Michael's murder with
00:40:53
questions wrapped around them and in
00:40:54
particular in relation to Deacon being
00:40:57
on probationary license a bit near the
00:41:01
greater level of exploration so his
00:41:03
Majesty's coroner at the time uh saw
00:41:07
that
00:41:07
and starts running in quest
00:41:12
the really crucial failure that came out
00:41:16
at the inquest was that Timothy deakin
00:41:19
had been arrested in another Force after
00:41:23
smashing up a car that he'd stolen and
00:41:26
he was in possession of drugs that
00:41:29
incident should have resulted in him
00:41:32
being charged and immediately being
00:41:35
recalled back to prison
00:41:37
that makes me angry very angry and I
00:41:41
hope to God they never let him out ever
00:41:44
[Music]
00:41:47
the coroner did an incredible job and
00:41:50
uncovered a whole series of failings
00:41:56
[Music]
00:41:57
we've gone to a better place
00:42:01
where no one hears anyone
00:42:05
and he's with all his grants and
00:42:07
granddads in there
00:42:09
for all his friends that have passed
00:42:11
away in the past
00:42:15
not really what I'm there though I'd
00:42:17
like him to be back here with us
00:42:23
remember oh yeah we can't change that
00:42:25
can we
00:42:28
record
00:42:29
[Music]
00:42:33
I just wish he was here with us Allen to
00:42:36
see his own son grow up and what a
00:42:38
lovely lady grown up to be like you know
00:42:40
and that upsets me a lot because it
00:42:43
should be seeing all the wonderful
00:42:46
things with his son and saying but it's
00:42:48
very much like his dad
00:42:52
I'm like he's found the figure
00:42:54
and I make sure I'm always there for him
00:42:57
[Music]
00:43:00
Michael was my baby and I miss him so
00:43:03
much
00:43:04
and every night before I go to bed
00:43:07
as you can see these pictures everywhere
00:43:09
and I've got one in my kitchen there and
00:43:10
stand on the step
00:43:12
and I blame a cake and a golf I love you
00:43:15
night God black Michael and I kiss every
00:43:17
picture
00:43:19
[Music]
00:43:21
because I think he needs to know
00:43:24
it's just awful
00:43:29
[Music]
00:43:34
thank you
00:43:38
