Forensic Files - Season 8, Episode 19 - Breaking News - Full Episode

December 16, 2021 / 22:08

This episode covers the murder of Hope Denise Hall in 1994, the investigation that followed, and the use of DNA evidence to solve the case.

Despite Quick's identification by witnesses, DNA evidence cleared him as a suspect. The investigation stalled until a breakthrough occurred when DNA from the crime scene matched Shermaine Johnson, a resident of the same apartment complex.

Johnson's DNA was in the database due to previous convictions for similar crimes. He was arrested and later convicted of Hope's murder, highlighting the importance of DNA technology in solving cold cases.

The episode emphasizes the role of forensic science and the establishment of DNA databases in criminal investigations, showcasing how they can lead to justice in cases that seem unsolvable.

TL;DR

Hope Hall's murder in 1994 was solved through DNA evidence linking Shermaine Johnson to the crime, despite initial suspect Leroy Quick's identification.

00:01:04
in july 1994
00:01:07
22 year old hope denise hall and her
00:01:09
three-year-old son robert lived in a
00:01:12
suburb of richmond virginia in this
00:01:15
apartment complex
00:01:18
hope had just graduated from virginia
00:01:20
state university at the top of her class
00:01:24
her focus was journalism and she wanted
00:01:26
to work in the highly competitive
00:01:28
television news industry
00:01:31
her big break came at the nbc affiliate
00:01:34
in richmond
00:01:36
she was very eager she was very focused
00:01:38
she was very mature for her age hope
00:01:41
really wanted to be an honor reporter
00:01:43
and an anchor at the time she was
00:01:45
working for us she was editing tape and
00:01:48
so she pretty much gathered the material
00:01:50
for the broadcast and put it together
00:01:52
hope gained her maturity through
00:01:55
adversity
00:01:57
at age nine she was diagnosed with
00:01:59
advanced kidney cancer
00:02:01
after five years of treatment hope was
00:02:04
cured
00:02:05
at the age of 19 hope became pregnant
00:02:08
while still in college she and the
00:02:10
baby's father shared custody of their
00:02:12
son but decided marriage would have been
00:02:15
a mistake
00:02:16
i think we realized that we needed a lot
00:02:19
of growing up we had to grow up in order
00:02:22
to really take on that whole
00:02:23
responsibility of of marriage
00:02:26
and i think
00:02:27
that was the bottom line
00:02:30
by all accounts hope was a devoted
00:02:32
mother and a determined career woman
00:02:36
that's why on the afternoon of july 11
00:02:38
1994
00:02:40
co-workers in the newsroom became
00:02:42
alarmed when she did not report to work
00:02:46
calls to hope's home went unanswered
00:02:50
we had a crew in the area so we sent
00:02:52
them by to find out what might be going
00:02:55
on and did knock on our door
00:02:57
they went in and when they got there
00:02:58
there was police tape set up around the
00:03:00
apartment complex
00:03:03
you could actually
00:03:04
smell
00:03:05
death if that's something that you can
00:03:08
imagine
00:03:09
when you walked in you could see the
00:03:10
blood on the door
00:03:13
hope was found dead on the bedroom floor
00:03:16
she had been stabbed to death
00:03:18
it was one of the worst crime scenes
00:03:20
i've ever saw because it was blood
00:03:22
everywhere
00:03:23
[Music]
00:03:25
hope's apartment door had been locked
00:03:27
and showed no sign of forced entry
00:03:30
no valuables were missing
00:03:33
there was a bloody handprint near the
00:03:35
door but it was too smudged for analysis
00:03:37

00:03:50
fourth was on the bathroom sink with
00:03:53
water still running
00:03:55
in the kitchen police found a broken
00:03:58
blood stained drinking glass
00:04:01
dried blood droplets formed a trail from
00:04:03
the kitchen to the bedroom
00:04:06
the phone was on the bedroom floor
00:04:09
ripped from the wall
00:04:11
hope didn't deserve this no human being
00:04:14
deserved this
00:04:16
as officers combed the crime scene
00:04:19

00:04:46
investigators had two mysteries to solve
00:04:49
who killed hope hall and where was her
00:04:52
three-year-old son
00:04:54
police contacted the baby's father
00:04:56
robert kinney
00:04:58
i remember i was
00:05:00
at home at my mom's house
00:05:02
and i just walked in the door
00:05:06
and
00:05:07
a mommy told me that a detective had
00:05:09
called
00:05:11
kenny told police that their son young
00:05:13
robert was with him in northern virginia
00:05:15
about a two hours drive away
00:05:18
the child was spending the summer there
00:05:21
police asked kinney to come in for
00:05:23
questioning
00:05:24
my father rolled down with me i couldn't
00:05:27
feel anything i i
00:05:29
i just
00:05:30
i was in a zombie-like stage
00:05:33
police believed hope knew her killer
00:05:36
because her front door was found locked
00:05:39
somebody had a key the only way they
00:05:41
could have locked that deadbolt was to
00:05:43
have a key on the outside and lock it
00:05:46
we have to find this person no one can
00:05:49
stab someone repeatedly and cut their
00:05:53
throat three times and
00:05:55
leave them to rot on the floor
00:06:00
without them hitting again
00:06:03
this crime was eerily similar to the
00:06:05
ones committed by richmond's south side
00:06:08
strangler who raped and murdered five
00:06:11
women in their homes
00:06:13
that was a case that terrified
00:06:16
absolutely terrified the community
00:06:18
people were boarding up windows and just
00:06:21
changing their life plans
00:06:24
the south side strangler timothy spencer
00:06:27
was executed for those crimes shortly
00:06:29
before hope paul's murder
00:06:32
spencer's case made history
00:06:34
he was the first person put to death in
00:06:36
the united states based on dna evidence
00:06:40
timothy spencer's case
00:06:41
brought awareness to law enforcement
00:06:44
certainly in this area to what dna can
00:06:47
do
00:06:49
spencer's case prompted virginia
00:06:51
lawmakers to establish the country's
00:06:54
first dna data bank
00:06:56
which put the dna profiles of all
00:06:58
convicted felons of virginia's prisons
00:07:01
into a computer
00:07:03
so many felons
00:07:05
have a tendency to commit crimes again
00:07:08
once they are released from the from the
00:07:10
system
00:07:12
back at hope paul's apartment
00:07:15
scientists found unidentified blood
00:07:18
presumably the killers on the broken
00:07:20
drinking glass in the kitchen
00:07:23
the knife on the bathroom sink also had
00:07:26
the killer's blood
00:07:29
testing also found signs of sexual
00:07:32
assault
00:07:34
from the crime scene evidence
00:07:36
forensic scientists performed a dq alpha
00:07:39
and poly marker dna analysis
00:07:43
polymarker consisted of five different
00:07:45
areas of the dna dq alpha was a sixth
00:07:48
area of the dna so these were just six
00:07:51
areas of the dna that we were looking at
00:07:54
for differences between individuals
00:07:58
when scientists entered the dna of hope
00:08:00
paul's killer into their database
00:08:03
they could find no match
00:08:05
so investigators looked elsewhere
00:08:08
most homicides are committed by people
00:08:10
where there is some
00:08:11
level of relationship
00:08:13
it can be very close or it can be
00:08:16
not very close at all
00:08:18
police spoke with the baby's father
00:08:20
robert kinney he had an alibi he was at
00:08:23
his home over a two-hour drive away at
00:08:26
the time of the murder
00:08:28
even with this alibi
00:08:30
kinney voluntarily submitted a blood
00:08:32
sample for dna testing
00:08:34
i was you know more than happy to assist
00:08:36
them in any way i can to you know
00:08:38
eliminate me so that they can focus on
00:08:40
whoever is responsible
00:08:42
um so
00:08:44
that didn't bother me
00:08:47
but his dna did not match blood found at
00:08:50
the crime scene so kinney was cleared
00:08:53
relieved
00:08:55
knowing one thing in scientific data
00:08:57
proving another is two different things
00:09:00
my gut said he did not do this
00:09:04
next investigators looked into hope's
00:09:06
lifestyle for possible clues
00:09:09
i knew how careful she was
00:09:11
about her own safety
00:09:13
i just couldn't believe that she would
00:09:15
be anywhere where she'd be at risk
00:09:18
for being murdered
00:09:20
we didn't see anything that indicated
00:09:22
that she was out running around
00:09:24
or anything else it would make us say oh
00:09:27
maybe she ran into somebody in a bar or
00:09:29
something like that that
00:09:31
she could have brought home
00:09:34
but investigators found two potential
00:09:36
witnesses
00:09:38
two neighbors saw a man without a shirt
00:09:41
running from hope's apartment building
00:09:43
on the night of her murder
00:09:47
they said he had a tattoo on his arm and
00:09:49
chest which looked like greek symbols
00:09:53
the brand was of the shape of a
00:09:55
horseshoe with a lightning bolt
00:09:58
going through which is the emblem of the
00:10:01
omega sapphire
00:10:02
[Music]
00:10:04
omega sci-fi was a local college
00:10:06
fraternity
00:10:09
hope's friends and co-workers told
00:10:11
police that this description sounded
00:10:13
like a man hope recently dated
00:10:16
hope allegedly told friends the man got
00:10:18
abusive when she tried to end their
00:10:20
relationship
00:10:22
the ex-boyfriend's name was leroy quick
00:10:26
police discovered he too had an omega
00:10:29
sci-fi tattoo on his arm and chest
00:10:33
both witnesses identified quick in a
00:10:35
police lineup as the man they saw
00:10:37
running from hope's apartment
00:10:40
police were convinced they had their
00:10:42
killer
00:10:44
but they were shocked when they got the
00:10:46
results of kwik's dna test
00:10:49
[Music]
00:10:54
in the search for hope hall's killer
00:10:56
police turned their attention to hope's
00:10:58
ex-boyfriend 29 year old leroy quick
00:11:02
witnesses claimed they saw him running
00:11:05
from hope's apartment building on the
00:11:07
night of the murder
00:11:09
this is nbc 12 news first at 4.
00:11:13
police made a break in this case just
00:11:15
before sunrise around 6 a.m they
00:11:17
arrested 29 year old leroy d quick iii
00:11:21
all of us were surprised because it was
00:11:24
someone that she had not even mentioned
00:11:27
to us
00:11:29
hope's co-workers told police the couple
00:11:31
met that summer
00:11:33
quick denied having a key to hope's
00:11:36
apartment he denied being at hope's
00:11:38
apartment the night of her murder and he
00:11:40
denied any involvement in the crime
00:11:44
it was a roller coaster we felt that
00:11:46
everything was about to come to an end
00:11:48
we're about to find out
00:11:49
exactly what happened
00:11:52
and
00:11:54
that wasn't the case
00:11:56
[Music]
00:11:58
investigators were dumbfounded when they
00:12:00
heard that leroy quick's dna did not
00:12:03
match the crime scene evidence
00:12:06
i was somewhat surprised we have the
00:12:09
witnesses that identified him
00:12:11
coming out of the apartment
00:12:14
running
00:12:15
without a shirt on
00:12:17
jumping in a car
00:12:19
taking off in a brisk motion
00:12:21
god help leroy quick if it hadn't been
00:12:23
for the dna
00:12:25
because they'd they'd have made a case
00:12:27
on him
00:12:29
police re-interviewed hundreds of hope's
00:12:31
neighbors friends and family to see if
00:12:34
any clue had been missed
00:12:37
nothing
00:12:40
nothing at all
00:12:42
and believe me when i say we interviewed
00:12:45
a lot of people
00:12:48
i think i can go on record to say we
00:12:50
practically interview everybody in how
00:12:52
commander apartments
00:12:55
now nearly a year after her murder
00:12:58
the trail of hope paul's killer grew
00:13:00
cold
00:13:03
but hope's parents refused to give up
00:13:06
they maintained constant contact with
00:13:08
police and wrote to dozens of lawmakers
00:13:11
pleading for help in finding their
00:13:13
daughter's killer
00:13:15
not just because he had murdered hope
00:13:18
but because he was a threat and a menace
00:13:22
it was very frustrating for everyone it
00:13:24
was very heartbreaking for her mother
00:13:26
and we saw the anguish that her mother
00:13:28
was going through
00:13:29
as she tried to find an answer to this
00:13:33
after clearing the two most obvious
00:13:36
suspects
00:13:37
forensic scientists performed a second
00:13:39
more discriminating dna test of the
00:13:42
killer's dna
00:13:44
using
00:13:45
rflp
00:13:46
restriction fragment length polymorphism
00:13:50
at the time
00:13:51
rflp was the most discriminating dna
00:13:55
test available
00:13:57
rflp measured various sections of the
00:14:00
killer's dna to determine the lengths
00:14:03
unique to that individual
00:14:06
means that there is a much better chance
00:14:08
of
00:14:09
telling
00:14:10
my dna apart from yours
00:14:13
this newer more complete dna profile of
00:14:16
hope paul's killer was once again
00:14:19
entered into the virginia dna data bank
00:14:23
the computer compares the unidentified
00:14:26
dna profile to the dna of 8 000
00:14:31
convicted felons
00:14:33
i'd been working on it for a long time
00:14:35
so it had become like my case you know
00:14:38
of all the cases that i'd worked on this
00:14:39
was the one that i really wanted to get
00:14:42
a hit on two years earlier there had
00:14:46
been no match but this time
00:14:50
was different
00:14:52
the blood and semen evidence in hope
00:14:54
hall's apartment matched that of
00:14:57
shermaine johnson
00:14:59
his dna profile was put into the
00:15:01
database because of his recent
00:15:03
conviction for two other rapes
00:15:06
johnson lived in hope hole's apartment
00:15:09
complex and was just 16 years old at the
00:15:13
time of her murder
00:15:14
and it was a big eye-opener for me i
00:15:17
always thought criminals had scars and
00:15:20
and looked like criminals
00:15:22
this guy did not look at all like a
00:15:24
criminal
00:15:26
this was the data bank's first cold hit
00:15:29
in a homicide case
00:15:31
an innocent face like cheraine johnson
00:15:34
you would think someone that innocent
00:15:37
looking that young would not have
00:15:39
committed this type of crime but he did
00:15:42
investigators thought they finally had
00:15:44
the break they desperately needed
00:15:47
but if sherman johnson was hope's killer
00:15:51
why had witnesses identified hope's
00:15:53
ex-boyfriend
00:15:54
as the man running from hope's apartment
00:15:59
[Music]
00:16:02
a computer database identified shermaine
00:16:04
johnson as pope paul's rapist and
00:16:07
murderer
00:16:10
jermaine johnson's dna was in virginia's
00:16:12
database because of two convictions for
00:16:15
rapes that were strikingly similar to
00:16:18
hope paul's case
00:16:20
when questioned by police johnson
00:16:22
claimed he was innocent
00:16:25
he admitted knocking on hope's apartment
00:16:27
door and asking her for a drink of water
00:16:31
but johnson said another man opened the
00:16:33
front door with the key
00:16:35
pulled out a knife and ordered johnson
00:16:38
to leave
00:16:40
this was consistent with the
00:16:41
eyewitnesses who saw not charmaine
00:16:44
johnson but another man running from
00:16:46
hope's apartment later that same night
00:16:50
was it possible
00:16:52
chermaine johnson wasn't the killer
00:16:56
investigators asked fbi behavioral
00:16:58
profiler mark safric to compare
00:17:01
johnson's past criminal behavior to the
00:17:03
hope paul case
00:17:05
i mean is he relatively
00:17:07
criminally unsophisticated yes that's
00:17:10
not uncommon with younger offenders but
00:17:13
my job wasn't to look at germaine i
00:17:14
wasn't asked to look at germain i wasn't
00:17:16
even asked to consider the offender i
00:17:18
was simply asked to look at behavior
00:17:22
safric went to hope hall's apartment to
00:17:24
better understand the crime scene
00:17:27
he also examined photos and reports from
00:17:30
additional rapes johnson was suspected
00:17:33
of committing
00:17:35
suffrage found many behavioral links in
00:17:38
all five crimes
00:17:40
all of the victims were young and lived
00:17:43
close to shamane johnson's home
00:17:45
there is a dynamic that connects all of
00:17:47
them contrary to many sexual assaults
00:17:50
where the offender
00:17:52
assault contacts
00:17:54
and captures and assaults the victim all
00:17:57
in the same area here we have a guy who
00:18:01
wants to capture and then subsequently
00:18:04
move all of his victims to another
00:18:05
location to engage in the sexual assault
00:18:08
in each case johnson used some kind of
00:18:12
rules to gain entrance to the victim's
00:18:14
home
00:18:15
and once inside threatened the victims
00:18:18
with one of their own kitchen knives
00:18:21
when he has the option for lots of
00:18:22
different knives even larger more
00:18:24
threatening knives butcher knives longer
00:18:26
bladed knives he he chooses a shorter
00:18:29
bladed knife he's more comfortable with
00:18:32
that type of weapon
00:18:35
prosecutors were now convinced that
00:18:37
johnson went to hope's apartment that
00:18:40
night asking for a drink of water
00:18:44
i hope it's cold enough
00:18:46
once inside there was a struggle the
00:18:48
glass fell to the floor
00:18:50
johnson grabbed a knife
00:18:53
the trail of blood indicated the attack
00:18:55
started in the kitchen then led to the
00:18:57
bedroom
00:19:02
johnson returned to the kitchen numerous
00:19:04
times for other knives after each was
00:19:06
damaged
00:19:08
at some point he picked up the broken
00:19:10
pieces of glass cutting his finger and
00:19:13
leaving his dna behind
00:19:16
after the murder
00:19:17
the evidence shows johnson washed his
00:19:20
hands in the bathroom sink but he didn't
00:19:23
remove all of his own blood
00:19:25
he was trying to clean up he may have
00:19:27
been injured maybe that's why the water
00:19:30
was left running in the bathroom or it
00:19:32
may have just been that he was just
00:19:33
trying to clean the knife he just didn't
00:19:35
clean up good
00:19:36
enough but one nagging question remained
00:19:40
if the witnesses were correct in their
00:19:42
identification
00:19:44
why was leroy quick running from hope's
00:19:46
apartment that night
00:19:50
prosecutors don't believe quick had
00:19:52
anything to do with the murder
00:19:54
but there is speculation that crick may
00:19:56
have gone to hope's apartment that night
00:19:59
used a key to get in and found hope dead
00:20:03
then fled fearing he would be blamed and
00:20:06
locked the apartment door behind him
00:20:10
quick however
00:20:11
denies this
00:20:13
regardless germain johnson was tried and
00:20:16
convicted of hope paul's murder and this
00:20:19
time was sentenced to death
00:20:22
i think the guy is an animal
00:20:24
i don't know whether i want to push the
00:20:25
needle but i certainly would like to
00:20:27
witness the
00:20:28
pushing of the needle
00:20:30
and if
00:20:32
nobody else would do it i would
00:20:33
certainly do it
00:20:36
investigators say
00:20:38
it was the confluence of dna evidence
00:20:41
computer technology and the foresight to
00:20:44
collect and catalog the dna profiles of
00:20:47
all convicted felons that brought
00:20:50
tremaine johnson to justice
00:20:52
we interviewed everybody in that
00:20:54
apartment complex and charmaine
00:20:56
johnson's name never came up without um
00:21:00
the dna data bank without that forensic
00:21:03
evidence
00:21:04
i unfortunately i would say that this
00:21:06
case would not have been solved
00:21:09
we are trying to push international debt
00:21:11
databasing we feel very very strongly
00:21:14
that criminals don't stay put they move
00:21:17
from city to city state to state
00:21:19
countries to countries
00:21:20
and we want to make sure
00:21:23
that the clear message is sent out that
00:21:25
no matter where you go no matter what
00:21:27
you think you've gotten away with your
00:21:29
dna and law enforcement will be waiting
00:21:31
for you
