May 23, 2019 / 48:15

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the chupacabra sightings in Puerto Rico, the mysterious death of tobacco heiress Doris Duke, and two heartwarming reunions.

In Puerto Rico, eyewitness accounts describe a strange creature known as the chupacabra, which allegedly preys on livestock. Reports began in 1995 when David McGraw found his goat dead with puncture wounds and drained of blood. The local mayor, Jose Soto, investigated numerous animal deaths attributed to this creature, leading to widespread fear and speculation.

The episode also discusses the controversial death of Doris Duke, a wealthy tobacco heiress. After her passing, questions arose regarding the manipulation of her will, particularly concerning her butler Bernard Lafferty, who gained significant control over her estate. Various lawsuits followed her death, with allegations of foul play and manipulation surrounding her final days.

Additionally, the episode features the reunion of Kim Shan, who was left at an orphanage in Vietnam as a baby, with her childhood friends, Nok and Young Sing. After nearly 30 years apart, Kim hopes to reconnect with them, highlighting the emotional bonds formed in their youth.

Lastly, the episode recounts the story of Matt and Wendy Jamison, who discovered $6,500 in cash in their backyard. Speculation arose about the money's origin, leading them to turn it in to authorities, ultimately allowing them to keep it after no claims were made.

00:03:59
Doris Duke was the only child of tobacco

00:04:05
just 12 when her father died leaving her
00:04:08

the press dubbed her the richest girl in

as Doris grew up the fortune also grew
00:04:17
from the millions to over a billion she
00:04:21

00:04:31
people to people treated her as if she
00:04:33
were a major major star Doris Duke led
00:04:39
an eccentric and lavish lifestyle she
00:04:42
married twice divorced twice and
00:04:44
reportedly had dozens of lovers among
00:04:47
the movie Idol Errol Flynn General
00:04:50

00:04:52
champion Duke Kahanamoku Kahanamoku
00:04:56
allegedly father Doris his only child a
00:04:58
daughter who died at birth a 1940 nearly
00:05:03
half a century later when she was well
00:05:05
past 70 miss Duke adopted but not a
00:05:07
child a 35 year old woman named Shandy
00:05:11
Hefner in 1987 Duke rewrote her will the
00:05:16
name Shandy as executor of her estate
00:05:18
eventually Shandy would fall out of
00:05:21
favour but not before she introduced
00:05:23
miss Duke to Bernhard Lafferty he was an
00:05:27
alcoholic he had a tremendous drinking
00:05:30
problem Doris told other family members
00:05:32
that she was pretty disgusted with him
00:05:34
she used to call him Rafferty instead of
00:05:37
Lafferty she would purposely
00:05:39
mispronounce his name she made made fun
00:05:41
of him that's why so many family members
00:05:44
were so surprised when in the end he was
00:05:47
in control in 1991 don't remove Shandy
00:05:52
as executor who replaced her with dr.
00:05:54
Harry Demopoulos a self-styled longevity
00:05:57
specialist
00:05:58
when I went over with her who were the
00:06:01
list of possible candidates for executor
00:06:03
and she mentioned dr. Demopoulos she
00:06:05
mentioned her nephew she mentioned her
00:06:07
business manager at the timer when bloom
00:06:09
and we considered the list together
00:06:11
Bernard wasn't even on the B list he
00:06:14
wasn't on the A List he wasn't on the B
00:06:15
list within a year that had changed dr.
00:06:20
dimopoulos was dropped and replaced by
00:06:22
Dukes accountant who was himself
00:06:24
replaced by Dukes half nephew along with
00:06:26
a butler Bernard Lafferty when Harry
00:06:30
Demopoulos and I heard that we said this
00:06:33
isn't the miss Duke that we know this
00:06:35
cannot have been a miss Duke who was
00:06:38
acting in a right mind at the time
00:06:44
Lafferty has various supporters who say
00:06:47
he was a natural choice for co-executor
00:06:49
they claim you as Miss Dukes closest
00:06:52
confidant and was looking out for her
00:06:54
best interests
00:06:55
however Dukes former housekeeper and her
00:06:58
personal chef were both suing Lafferty
00:07:00
for harassment and breach of contract
00:07:02
disagree Bernard is definitely
00:07:06
manipulator
00:07:07
Bernard let people in and let them out
00:07:10
he picked up the phone so after a while
00:07:14
he had control of who got in touch with
00:07:16
Miss Duke he would instruct other
00:07:19
employees of Miss Duke to have
00:07:23
conversations with mr. Kubat have
00:07:25
devoted he was to her he was trying to
00:07:27
win her her trusts and affections in an
00:07:32
obsessive kind of way within days of
00:07:37
appointing Lafferty as co-executor
00:07:38
Norris Duke then 78 elected to undergo
00:07:42
extensive cosmetic surgery the surgeon
00:07:45
dr. Harry Glassman was reportedly
00:07:47
recommended by Bernard Lafferty through
00:07:51
the autumn of 1991 miss Duke clearly was
00:07:55
failing mentally it was at this time
00:07:58
Bernard pressured her
00:08:01
coerced her and coaxed her into getting
00:08:05
involved with dr. Harry Glassman who was
00:08:08
going to lift her depression by making
00:08:12
her young and glamorous again in a
00:08:15
minute just two days after the cosmetic
00:08:19
surgery miss Duke fell at home and broke
00:08:21
her hip
00:08:22
dr. Glassman referred to Beverly Hills
00:08:24
physician dr. Charles kibble it's became
00:08:27
Dukes primary physicians over the next
00:08:32
year
00:08:32
miss Duke was in and out of the hospital
00:08:35
several times by early March of 1993
00:08:38
medical records indicate that she was
00:08:40
suffering from bouts of mild confusion
00:08:44
around this time miss Duke apparently
00:08:47
decided both to change her will and to
00:08:49
give Bernard Lafferty power of attorney
00:08:51
in our papers were drawn up by attorneys
00:08:55
Alan Kroll and William Doyle who had
00:08:57
been recommended by dr. Glasper this
00:09:01
Duke we've prepared your will
00:09:02
the signing took place at cedars-sinai
00:09:04
Medical Center and Bostitch was in the
00:09:07
room claims miss Duke did not know what
00:09:10
she was signing we got a little more
00:09:13
Congress couldn't really sign it he just
00:09:15
sat there like wooden statue and Bill
00:09:19
Doyle lifted the will up and put his
00:09:21
briefcase underneath to raise it up and
00:09:23
she still couldn't sign it so he slid
00:09:26
his hand under her wrist and sort of
00:09:30
propelled her hand along so she could
00:09:32
scroll her name and I stood there I was
00:09:36
totally shocked I thought this is
00:09:38
there's something really wrong here
00:09:41
thank you very much just in a sworn
00:09:43
deposition William Doyle claims miss
00:09:46
dilky was of sound mind and signed of
00:09:48
her own volition a few weeks later
00:09:52
Bernard Lafferty was also named sole
00:09:54
individual executor of the estate
00:09:57
allegedly went on a spending spree sixty
00:10:00
thousand dollars on Armani clothing
00:10:02
25,000 on jewelry several thousand more
00:10:05
on flowers and gifts all of the
00:10:08
purchases were reportedly charged to the
00:10:10
estate in July of 1993 Doris Duke
00:10:16
suffered a stroke she returned home
00:10:18
after two months in the hospital her
00:10:21
bedroom had been transformed into an
00:10:22
intensive carriers round-the-clock
00:10:25
nursing supervision do miss do dr.
00:10:30
Charles kibble which stated the
00:10:31
following in an affidavit given after
00:10:34
Dukes death Doris Dukes medical
00:10:38
situation while she was at home in late
00:10:39
September 1993 was terminal although
00:10:42
upon her discharge from the hospital I
00:10:44
had initially hoped that she would
00:10:46
improve for several months shortly after
00:10:48
she returned home a condition began to
00:10:50
deteriorate one of miss Dukes nurses was
00:10:54
Tammy peut in an affidavit filed in
00:10:57
January of 1995 Payette stated within a
00:11:02
short period of time after she arrived
00:11:04
home ms Dukes physical therapy was cut
00:11:06
off and she was placed on a massive
00:11:08
sedation regime by dr. kibbe wits at the
00:11:10
request of Bernard Lafferty ms Dukes
00:11:13
Butler the rehab has discontinued and
00:11:17
the drugs go up she's kept down she's
00:11:20
sedated and at that point it seems to me
00:11:23
Lafferty and the others have taken
00:11:25
control of her life
00:11:28
tami pay its credibility however has
00:11:30
been called into serious question
00:11:32
recently she was sentenced to eight
00:11:34
years in prison for stealing nearly a
00:11:37
million dollars worth of valuables from
00:11:39
several of her patients they get her to
00:11:42
come up with an affidavit 18 months
00:11:44
after Doris Dukes death saying my god
00:11:47
Doris Duke is being mistreated here she
00:11:49
could have lived for five years the
00:11:51
medication was too great where was she
00:11:53
when Doris dukkha was alive on October
00:11:59
7th dr. kipper wits began to administer
00:12:01
Demerol by injection even though Tammy
00:12:04
peut claims miss Duke was not in pain he
00:12:08
had further claims at Dukes request to
00:12:10
return to the hospital was ignored
00:12:12
they've got her home she signed the will
00:12:15
if they let her out if they let her meet
00:12:18
a friend if they let somebody come in
00:12:20
there and they Rehab her she may sign
00:12:22
other wills this is the time for miss
00:12:25
Duke to die she made the decision in
00:12:28
full possession of her faculties that
00:12:33
she no longer wanted to go to
00:12:35
cedars-sinai or anywhere else she wanted
00:12:37
to be remained comfortable and pain-free
00:12:38
there in her house that's where if she
00:12:41
was going to die she wanted to die and
00:12:44
dr. Kevin woods filed her orders he
00:12:45
would have filed any orders she had
00:12:47
given him
00:12:51
nine days later dr. Kevin wits ordered
00:12:54
that miss Duke be given Demerol by
00:12:55
continuous intravenous drip rather than
00:12:58
injection in his affidavit kibble it's
00:13:01
explained by October 26th 1993 I believe
00:13:06
to a reasonable degree of medical
00:13:07
certainty that Miss Duke was near death
00:13:11
the next day a parcel was delivered to
00:13:14
the Duke mansion addressed to one of the
00:13:16
nurses a package arrived and it was from
00:13:20
a drug company somewhere and Bernard
00:13:22
jumped out of the chair and he ran over
00:13:24
and he grabbed the box and he looked at
00:13:26
it and then took it downstairs and then
00:13:30
a few minutes later he could me Oh miss
00:13:33
Duke is gonna die tonight and he said it
00:13:35
with definitive finality it wasn't like
00:13:38
the other times where you say oh I think
00:13:40
she's dying in his affidavit dr. kibbe
00:13:45
was acknowledged a change in medication
00:13:47
that afternoon he substituted morphine
00:13:51
for Demerol in her affidavit Tammy peut
00:13:55
made note of bernard Lafferty's reaction
00:13:57
to the day's events
00:13:59
later that evening Bernard became very
00:14:02
excited and impatient because miss Duke
00:14:04
was lingering and called dr. kibbe wits
00:14:06
explaining that miss Duke had not
00:14:08
expired right thank you very much yes
00:14:12
goodbye
00:14:13
[Music]
00:14:16
records indicate the dr. kibbe which
00:14:19
then returned to the mansion and
00:14:20
administered another ten milligrams of
00:14:22
morphine by intravenous push he recorded
00:14:26
that the patient was in a state of
00:14:27
advanced pulmonary edema a fluid buildup
00:14:30
in the lungs
00:14:31
Tammy peut self a David paints a
00:14:34
different picture eventually as a result
00:14:38
of the morphine IV MS Dukes kidneys
00:14:40
began to fail her lungs filled up with
00:14:42
fluid and her circulation began to
00:14:44
deteriorate ms Duke did not have
00:14:47
pulmonary edema and no doctor had
00:14:50
diagnosed pulmonary edema everybody
00:14:54
there knew that miss Duke was going to
00:14:56
be dying with those with the addition of
00:14:58
that morphine and you could see the
00:15:00
lockstep relationship increased doses
00:15:02
drip drip drip Intimus do down goes the
00:15:06
breathing down goes the heartbeat and to
00:15:09
where the flatline Duke
00:15:12
miss Duke can you hear me at 4:00 a.m.
00:15:15
on October 28th Doris Duke was clinging
00:15:18
to life respirations are decreased to
00:15:20
four to five per minute according to the
00:15:23
nurses records written by Tammy peut dr.
00:15:26
kibbe was phoned and increased the
00:15:28
morphine dosage I asked in the
00:15:31
deposition of the doctor was she in pain
00:15:34
course not she's unconscious and yet
00:15:37
we're increasing the morphine there's no
00:15:39
reason other than pain or terminating a
00:15:42
patient to increase the morphine at that
00:15:44
point and that's what happened with miss
00:15:46
Duke dr. Kim Woods did everything he
00:15:49
could to keep her pain-free and
00:15:50
comfortable and whenever he gave nurse
00:15:52
pay at the discretion to increase the
00:15:54
medication if necessary
00:15:56
nurse pay increased it far beyond what
00:15:58
he authorized then claimed 18 months
00:16:01
later that he was the one over
00:16:03
medicating her it doesn't make sense
00:16:08
at 5:15 a.m. according to notes from
00:16:11
another nurse a 100 milligram dose of
00:16:14
Demerol was added to the morphine drip
00:16:16
by Koch telephone order of dr. Glassman
00:16:19
/ dr. kibbutz an hour later Doris Duke
00:16:23
was dead
00:16:25
[Music]
00:16:33
I believe that woman wanted every chance
00:16:35
possible to live she had a strong
00:16:38
constitution and a will and I know she
00:16:41
wanted to live and I know they killed
00:16:44
her I mean she went to these doctors
00:16:47
because she wanted to dance again she
00:16:50
wanted to go and be photographed
00:16:51
shopping in Paris and what happens is a
00:16:58
year and a half later they're hooking
00:17:01
her up to machines giving her amounts of
00:17:05
drugs that would drop Napoleon's army if
00:17:09
you look at the facts here at the care
00:17:11
that was given by dr. kibbe woods at the
00:17:13
money at stake you realize there's only
00:17:15
one motive here and that's to get their
00:17:17
hands on part of the estate of Doris
00:17:20
Duke and to do so they will drag any
00:17:22
innocent people into it that they feel
00:17:24
it's necessary and unfortunately dr.
00:17:26
kibbe wits is one of those innocent
00:17:27
people
00:17:28
[Music]
00:17:32
her father told her Doris you have more
00:17:35
money than anyone else people are never
00:17:37
gonna love you except for your money she
00:17:40
did not trust people her father had told
00:17:42
her that and so Bernard Lafferty was
00:17:44
able to fill a void he came into a
00:17:46
vacuum he then found a group of
00:17:49
opportunist he found medical doctors and
00:17:52
he found lawyers who saw him as someone
00:17:55
who they could control so while he used
00:17:57
miss Duke he was also I think used by
00:18:00
those around him who had something to
00:18:02
gain
00:18:03

00:18:41
could end tonight here in the United
00:18:44
States and later we'll take you to
00:18:47
Puerto Rico where some residents claimed
00:18:50
that a frightening predator is roaming
00:18:52
the countryside
00:18:54
[Music]
00:19:05
here done saw mysteries we've learned to
00:19:07
expect the unexpected
00:19:09
tonight's update is a perfect example
00:19:15
May 7th 1964 Queens New York Jean and
00:19:20
Don Warren rushed to greet the newest
00:19:22
member of their family a two-year-old
00:19:24
foster child named Roger Linsley I fell
00:19:33
in love with him immediately
00:19:36
there was something about him that drew
00:19:39
me to him and I said to myself this is
00:19:43
gonna be my son over the next three
00:19:47
years Roger became just that the fourth
00:19:49
child and only son in a warm and loving
00:19:52
household
00:19:53
I think adjusting and our family was the
00:19:57
best thing for Roger whatever we did he
00:20:00
was there with us and each day I was
00:20:04
loving this child more and more and more
00:20:07
[Music]
00:20:09
but in 1967 Jean and her husband had to
00:20:12
move to Ohio
00:20:13
they were heartbroken to learn that they
00:20:16
could not take Roger with them Jean will
00:20:20
never forget the morning the social
00:20:22
worker came to take Roger away when she
00:20:27
took him to the car he looked at us and
00:20:30
looked at me and I remembered putting up
00:20:32
his hand and crying I don't want to go I
00:20:37
don't want to go and you'd be a good boy
00:20:40
Roger I could only say Roger be good to
00:20:43
carry yourself and I love you and I'll
00:20:47
always remember you
00:20:49
Jean Warren remained true to her word
00:20:51
she never stopped looking for Roger
00:20:54
here's Keely Shea Smith to tell you how
00:20:57
she found him
00:20:59
Bob the night of our broadcast we
00:21:02
received a call from a very excited
00:21:04
Roger Linsley he was thrilled to learn
00:21:06
that gene was looking for him
00:21:08
normally that would have been enough but
00:21:10
a few minutes later we were stunned to
00:21:13
hear from a man named James Linsley who
00:21:15
turned out to be Rogers long-lost
00:21:17
brother suddenly the stage was set for a
00:21:20
remarkable double reunion on March 8th
00:21:26
1996 30 years after they were separated
00:21:30
roger Linsley finally came home to gene
00:21:33
warren the woman he still calls mom i
00:21:38
[Music]
00:21:41
was a static my heart started pounding i
00:21:48
would like him and his wife to be a part
00:21:51
of our family and it's so nice to hear
00:21:55
him call me Mom that makes it all
00:21:59
worthwhile
00:21:59
I feel so much love for that woman she
00:22:05
has changed my life I got a family
00:22:11
overnight overnight I got a family and
00:22:14
I'm a happy man
00:22:19
of your life of three years that you
00:22:23
spent with us the reunion with Jean was
00:22:26
a rousing success but there was more to
00:22:29
come much more Rogers brother James was
00:22:32
on the way they hadn't seen each other
00:22:35
in nearly three decades
00:22:48
that's unbelievable there's no feeling
00:22:52
in the world you could imagine there's
00:22:54
not to have a family and then thirty
00:22:56
years later in your life you see
00:22:57
somebody that's like you is
00:22:59
indescribable I'm overwhelmed
00:23:03
I really am I found my foster mother
00:23:07
downtown my brother we were separated as
00:23:11
infants I didn't I couldn't see leaving
00:23:16
this world without knowing where I came
00:23:17
from
00:23:19
now I know
00:23:20
[Music]
00:23:22
believe it or not there was still more
00:23:25
to come in the weeks since their reunion
00:23:27
Roger and James have found both their
00:23:30
brother Phillip and their father Phillip
00:23:32
senior for one family a happy ending and
00:23:35
a new beginning the snapshot is a window
00:23:56
to another place in time the Regina
00:23:58
Pacis Catholic orphanage in Vietnam
00:24:01
circa 1967 for a woman named Kim Shan
00:24:06
shown here at the age of 8 the picture
00:24:09
is one of the few tangible links to her
00:24:10
childhood friends knock and young sing
00:24:13
Kim hopes at tonight they will all be
00:24:16
reunited here in the United States after
00:24:19
a separation of nearly 30 years I feel
00:24:24
that um growing up together in the
00:24:27
orphanage they're the only roots that
00:24:30
I've known and I would like to find them
00:24:33
again
00:24:34
[Music]
00:24:37
Kym's ancestral roots were lost forever
00:24:39
in the land of her birth swept away by
00:24:41
history and circumstance as an infant
00:24:47
kim was left for the nuns of the
00:24:49
orphanage to find it was a parish priest
00:25:01
to christen her trance I Kim Han she
00:25:05
joined some 80 other girls at the
00:25:06
orphanage and there she came of age by
00:25:14
the time Kim turned five she and her
00:25:17
friends knocked and young-soon were
00:25:18
inseparable
00:25:21
no Jung sting and I we would always try
00:25:24
to sit together in the classroom and
00:25:28
during recess we would go out and we
00:25:31
would play in the playground together we
00:25:35
just seemed to always be together and we
00:25:41
didn't really think about parents
00:25:43
because we were raised in the orphanage
00:25:45
and we feel that's like family Kim's
00:25:51
life is far from luxurious but she was
00:25:53
sheltered from the winds of wars during
00:25:55
beyond the orphanage walls
00:25:57
[Music]
00:26:00
by the mid-sixties Saigon was flooded
00:26:03
with American troops some found their
00:26:09
way to the orphanage they would hand us
00:26:14
out lifesavers watch cherry lifesavers I
00:26:18
remember that because that was like my
00:26:20
favorite candy na kyung Seng and I we
00:26:24
would talk about this we hope that
00:26:27
someday an American family would adopt
00:26:30
this bring us to America where we could
00:26:33
live free and live happy
00:26:37
with a war escalating around them a
00:26:40
nun's redouble their efforts to find
00:26:42
permanent homes for the girls
00:26:47
Kim's chance came during the spring of
00:26:50
1967 Lawrence shooter was a retired Air
00:27:02
Force lieutenant colonel he and his wife
00:27:04
had already adopted two boys now they
00:27:07
wanted a little girl Mia Larry before an
00:27:13
adoption could move forward
00:27:15
the nuns wanted Kim and the shooter
00:27:17
family to get acquainted I have
00:27:19
something special for you what do you
00:27:21
think it is drive that thing I'll show
00:27:29
you come on
00:27:30
nearly every weekend for six months
00:27:33
shooter took Kim on an outing
00:27:37
some days they would spend hours just
00:27:39
meandering through Saigon trying on the
00:27:42
roles of father and daughter in the end
00:27:47
it would be Kim's decision whether or
00:27:49
not to leave the orphanage and join the
00:27:51
shooter family for advice she turned to
00:27:54
her closest confidants NOK and young
00:27:57
Singh you can go missed you guys and you
00:28:07
guys won't be there they could take good
00:28:10
care of you I don't really know anybody
00:28:12
in the United States they have good
00:28:16
cheeseburgers there an 8 year old has no
00:28:21
idea of what going to America means no
00:28:25
matter how well someone tries to explain
00:28:28
it to them it is total culture shock so
00:28:31
you go to America's like seeing go to
00:28:36
Cinderella's palace have you decided
00:28:42
sister Lucy the Mother Superior provided
00:28:45
the final nudge towards a choice if
00:28:48
Colonel Shweta wanted to adopt young
00:28:50
King or no you want them to go have a
00:28:53
good life don't you yes but that's what
00:28:56
I want for you and that's what God wants
00:29:01
friends maybe this would help and don't
00:29:09
worry there's an American family that
00:29:12
once saw dr. Jung ching hang up together
00:29:14
I mean they're going to America too
00:29:18
someday
00:29:21
[Music]
00:29:24
I was a little nervous about leaving
00:29:29
very scared but yet kind of excited
00:29:34
[Music]
00:29:37
they were excited for me and happy for
00:29:41
me that I got a chance to go and have a
00:29:43
better life
00:29:45
[Music]
00:29:54
and that was the last time I got to see
00:29:56
them
00:29:58
[Music]
00:30:03
Kim left Vietnam with her adoptive
00:30:06
father in September of 1967 today she
00:30:12
lives outside San Antonio Texas with her
00:30:14
husband and two sons her older boy is
00:30:17
about the same age that Kim was when she
00:30:19
left the Regina patches orphanage in
00:30:21
Saigon nearly 30 years ago at that time
00:30:26
Kim's friend young Singh was between
00:30:28
five and eight years old today she would
00:30:31
be in her mid-30s luck was about eight
00:30:36
years old she would be in her late 30s
00:30:39
both girls may have been adopted by the
00:30:42
same family and raised his sisters in
00:30:44
the United States
00:30:47
[Music]
00:30:54
next in Puerto Rico reports abound that
00:30:58
a mysterious unknown beast is on the
00:31:01
loose
00:31:02
[Music]
00:31:16
this is a UK rainforest on the island of
00:31:20
Puerto Rico a tropical paradise perhaps
00:31:24
best described as heaven on earth but
00:31:27
something is reportedly lurking on the
00:31:29
fringes of the forest a mysterious beast
00:31:32
which has turned heaven into hell I
00:31:37
could see it had something here on its
00:31:39
head it was like a crest when I saw him
00:31:46
stick out his pointed tongue and when he
00:31:49
held his claws and crouched for an
00:31:50
attack I thought I was the next victim I
00:31:55
felt like he was watching me because of
00:31:58
certain movements made by his eyes I
00:32:01
could see three fingers on each hand and
00:32:04
on each finger very long claws they call
00:32:09
the Beast chupacabras it preys on
00:32:11
livestock and domesticated pets it may
00:32:14
look like a creature out of a low-budget
00:32:16
horror film yet these composite drawings
00:32:19
are based on eyewitness descriptions
00:32:21
from dozens of Puerto Ricans in this day
00:32:26
and age it seems almost impossible that
00:32:28
such a creature might exist tales of the
00:32:31
puerto rican monster have been dismissed
00:32:33
as fantasy and imagination its attacks
00:32:35
attributed to wild dogs or monkeys some
00:32:39
of the images you're about to see are
00:32:40
unpleasant but necessary to understand
00:32:43
the phenomenon of chupacabras
00:32:47
David McGraw was one of the first to
00:32:50
encounter the Beast before dawn on
00:32:54
September 9th 1995 David went out to
00:32:57
check on the family goat David was
00:33:02
starting to discover that his goat had
00:33:04
been killed
00:33:12
after I found the goat dead I was
00:33:15
standing there looking around and that's
00:33:17
when I saw the creature
00:33:22
maril it was black and hairy it had
00:33:25
large red eyes and a crest on top of its
00:33:28
head when I saw it
00:33:33
I felt scared and I began to run I've
00:33:40
never seen anything like that and I've
00:33:42
never been that scared before
00:33:46
later that day investigators from the
00:33:49
civil defense were called to the scene
00:33:50
on they examined the goat the only
00:33:53
injuries they found were two small
00:33:55
puncture wounds on the back of its neck
00:33:57
yet surprisingly the goat had been
00:33:59
almost entirely drained of its blood the
00:34:04
local press immediately seized upon the
00:34:06
story
00:34:06
the creature was dubbed chupacabras the
00:34:09
goat sucker over the next three months
00:34:13
dozens of attacks were reported the
00:34:16
targets were all small animals strangely
00:34:19
their carcasses were largely intact
00:34:22
journalist Jorge Martine followed up
00:34:24
many of the stories and began to see a
00:34:27
pattern in many occasions these are
00:34:30
puncture wounds about I would say maybe
00:34:33
a fourth way half an inch in in size
00:34:37
perfect circle's these small puncture
00:34:40
wounds go into the animals in most of
00:34:43
kitchens we have found that they seem to
00:34:44
go right to the brain of the animals and
00:34:47
kill the animals affecting the brain and
00:34:49
the nervous systems of the animals in
00:34:51
other occasions they go right straight
00:34:54
into the animals in different areas as
00:34:56
if looking for certain organs in most of
00:34:59
occasions the organs affected are the
00:35:02
livers of the animals and the
00:35:04
reproductive systems of the animals two
00:35:07
attacks have been reported all over
00:35:09
Puerto Rico for the greatest
00:35:11
concentration in the village of Cano
00:35:13
Venus 30 miles east of the capital city
00:35:15
San Juan by October of 1995 even the
00:35:20
mayor of Canova knows Jose Soto had
00:35:23
taken an active role in the
00:35:24
investigation
00:35:26
maybe centerĂs and me innocent I began
00:35:30
to take an interest in this matter when
00:35:31
I visited a farm where five sheep had
00:35:33
been killed I saw two wounds in the neck
00:35:36
and on some 1/3 mark it attacks various
00:35:42
animals but mostly sheep and rabbits
00:35:44
because they cannot defend themselves
00:35:46
easily over the next few months mayor
00:35:52
Soto visited the sites of several
00:35:53
killings he interviewed witnesses and
00:35:56
organized search parties the attacks
00:35:58
continued because there have been more
00:36:04
than a hundred animals killed we're
00:36:06
talking about 70 or 80 attacks at the
00:36:10
moment we have some hysteria
00:36:12
some real problems and some fear I'm
00:36:15
determined to resolve this matter
00:36:18
despite the hysteria there were still
00:36:20
many skeptics among them police
00:36:23
detective Elia Sara Valen super guy I
00:36:29
didn't believe in this chupacabra Lisa
00:36:31
the people were just speculating or
00:36:33
perhaps because they were emotional or
00:36:35
fray they exaggerated things personally
00:36:39
I never was convinced with these stories
00:36:41
I just never believed them that changed
00:36:46
one night as Rivera and a friend drove
00:36:48
home from church
00:36:53
[Music]
00:36:56
I saw something strange on the roadside
00:36:59
I thought it was a puppet maybe as I
00:37:01
watched and observe the puppet it began
00:37:04
to move and I thought what is this
00:37:08
[Music]
00:37:12
long eyes that were married it had fangs
00:37:17
it was hairy and it had three fingers
00:37:19
with claws
00:37:27
when I opened the car door the animals
00:37:30
took out a long spike from his mouth
00:37:33
interpreted this spike as a defense
00:37:35
mechanism so I sat back close the door
00:37:38
and kept watching my experience as an
00:37:44
investigator we're trained to analyze
00:37:47
and quietly evaluate was in that moment
00:37:50
I can't lie to you
00:37:52
I was scared now I know what's out there
00:37:58
when people talk about you but calm down
00:38:00
yes he exists is not any known animal
00:38:04
I tell you sincerely what I saw was not
00:38:07
of this world
00:38:09
most of the eyewitness descriptions are
00:38:12
describing the same type of creature
00:38:13
with the same details they describe
00:38:16
something a beast like animal like with
00:38:20
a strange type of head more humanoid
00:38:22
looking with big red luminous eyes and
00:38:25
flat nose a small slick like mouth with
00:38:28
some fans protruding out from it almost
00:38:30
no ears in late November Jorge Martina a
00:38:35
TV news crew asked veterinarian Carlos
00:38:37
Soto
00:38:38
to examine two rabbits allegedly killed
00:38:40
by chupacabras dr. soda made a number of
00:38:43
perplexing discoveries a precise
00:38:46
circular wound on the back of one
00:38:48
rabbits neck the removal of specific
00:38:51
internal organs in the absence of rigor
00:38:53
mortis I thought wow this is something
00:38:57
strange here because this is not normal
00:39:00
on my 8 years in practice I never seen
00:39:03
that before it was my first time to see
00:39:05
something that odd a month later dr.
00:39:09
Soto examined 20 dead birds each had
00:39:12
been killed by a puncture wound to the
00:39:14
back of the neck I have seen birds in
00:39:17
which they don't go into rigor mortis
00:39:19
again some birds in which they are
00:39:21
depleted from all the internal organs
00:39:24
okay some birds in which they never the
00:39:28
blood never coagulates and also some
00:39:30
birds in which we'll see a perfect round
00:39:33
wound again and all the thoracic and
00:39:36
abdominal cavity is been opened okay
00:39:39
like a perfect wound okay so it's
00:39:43
strange strange what will seem a
00:39:46
necropsy yeah in the animal autopsies
00:39:49
that I've done the evidence does suggest
00:39:51
that these animals were attacked by some
00:39:54
dr. David Morales a veterinarian and
00:39:57
spokesperson for the Puerto Rican
00:39:58
government discounts rulers of a strange
00:40:01
unknown based well they mock pain sad
00:40:05
coincidence
00:40:07
we think that they were attacked by
00:40:08
doors they might be wild dogs
00:40:12
they could be vicious monkeys or could
00:40:14
be Tigers there are a number of possible
00:40:17
predators that could attack these
00:40:18
animals in this way these animals are
00:40:23
left intact sometimes and the perfect
00:40:28
ones that we have are not compatible
00:40:30
with the bite wounds it doesn't all go
00:40:35
rattle something strange is going this
00:40:38
isn't about dogs or monkeys or bats or
00:40:41
anything like that it's something very
00:40:43
strange and the creature that we're
00:40:45
searching for is very intelligent
00:40:48
these attacks can be dismissed as
00:40:52
accounts of drunken people or ignorant

people because we're talking about
00:40:58
highly reliable people all over porto
00:41:01
rico who are witnessing these attacks
00:41:03
and these creatures - until recently
00:41:09
every reported attack by chupacabras has
00:41:12
been in Puerto Rico the last month in
00:41:15
Miami - goats from twenty six chickens
00:41:17
perished in a manner that was almost
00:41:18
identical to the killings and Cano Venus
00:41:21
perhaps a massacre was a work of dogs or
00:41:25
a cruel hoax or perhaps just perhaps the
00:41:29
chupacabras does walk among us
00:41:35
next a young couple is stunned when a
00:41:38
lost treasure apparently falls from the
00:41:40
sky

00:41:53
imagine that you're a young married
00:41:55
couple you're struggling to make ends
00:41:57
meet wondering if you'll ever have
00:41:58
enough money to buy a house and send the
00:42:00
kids to college you dream about the pot
00:42:03
of gold at the end of the rainbow but
00:42:05
you certainly don't expect to find it in
00:42:07
your own backyard

00:42:12
November 12th 1995 was like any other
00:42:15
Sunday for Matt and Wendy Jamison of
00:42:17
Fair Oaks California they spent the
00:42:20
morning in church and returned home
00:42:21
around 10:30 but on this particular
00:42:24
Sunday
00:42:25
something just short of miraculous would
00:42:27
occur it began with a damp excited dog I
00:42:31
noticed my dog was glad and I was
00:42:34
wondering how she caught wet cuz it
00:42:35
hadn't rained and then I noticed looked
00:42:40
like paper all over the backyard
00:42:42
when I walked up there I noticed it was
00:42:45
money I thought then I took off running
00:42:46
towards it
00:42:48
indeed that paper was money $6,500 and
00:42:53
$20 bills
00:42:54
origin unknown I was trying to get it
00:43:04
the fastest I could but I didn't know
00:43:06
where this came from and this is a new
00:43:08
neighbor a does and I didn't want a lot
00:43:09
of people seeing me have office money so
00:43:11
I was trying to pick it up as fast as I
00:43:13
could
00:43:19
it took 20 minutes to collect all the
00:43:22
bills at another 20 to count them I've
00:43:26
never seen as much money before where do
00:43:29
you think it came from
00:43:39
the Jameson's first instinct was to call
00:43:41
the police but then again $6,500 was a
00:43:45
lot of money temptation began to creep
00:43:48
in we decided to wait till the next day
00:43:51
to decide and then I was kind of
00:43:54
thinking oh well that night I was think
00:43:56
it would be nice to have some some
00:43:58
things so I started cutting more leaning
00:44:01
towards wanting to keep it but well I
00:44:04
stayed up the whole night we found it I
00:44:06
didn't get any sleep any noise I heard I
00:44:08
was up looking around you know seeing
00:44:11
was going because I expected somebody to
00:44:13
come back after it and you know I have I
00:44:16
have a family to protect and I wasn't
00:44:17
about to let anybody come in this house
00:44:19
so I was uh definitely waiting up one
00:44:24
sleepless night was more than enough
00:44:27
yeah hello Sheriff's Department I found
00:44:30
some money in my backyard I'm wondering
00:44:33
who I should speak to about this I've
00:44:35
been in law enforcement 27 years and
00:44:37
I've never seen a case like this in my
00:44:39
27 years of experience not only we find
00:44:43
money at this residence we found money
00:44:45
next door NAT the house behind and also
00:44:48
on on the rooftops of one of the houses
00:44:50
so which was quite unusual it appears at
00:44:53
this point there's a couple reasons why
00:44:57
this may have happened the first
00:44:59
speculation is somebody may have thrown
00:45:01
it out of an airplane we have a lot of
00:45:04
planes flying throughout the county here
00:45:05
and there's airports all around us the
00:45:08
second speculation is that it could be
00:45:11
drug money and somebody threw it from
00:45:14
the street over the house that landed on
00:45:16
a roof and subsequently fell off into
00:45:18
the backyards why don't we count this
00:45:21
money out and you can verify that I come
00:45:25
up with $6,500 and we'll all told more
00:45:28
than $10,000 that apparently just
00:45:30
dropped from the sky California law
00:45:33
required the fighters to place an ad in
00:45:35
the local newspaper the owner then head
00:45:37
up to 90 days to claim the money if no
00:45:40
claim was made Matt and Wendy would get
00:45:43
to keep the
00:45:44
and share of the twenties from heaven a
00:45:46
lot of people you know say why'd you
00:45:49
turn it in why'd you turn it in you know
00:45:51
I would have kept it but I I really
00:45:52
don't think that you can say that
00:45:55
honestly until you live having that
00:45:57
money around and then you know I always
00:46:00
thought personally if I found money like
00:46:02
that that I would probably keep it but
00:46:05
now after having that amount of money
00:46:07
around I you know I know if that I did
00:46:10
the right thing as it turned out March
00:46:16
1st 1996 rolled around the 90-day
00:46:19
waiting period ended Matt and Wendy are
00:46:21
now legally entitled to the $6,500 which
00:46:24
they plan to use towards a down payment
00:46:26
on a house
00:46:27
as far as the Jameson's are concerned
00:46:29
this is one unsolved mystery where
00:46:32
honesty truly paid off on our next
00:46:43
unsolved mysteries Shelly Malone do
00:46:46
almost all there was to know about
00:46:47
horses
00:46:48
so when Shelly died in a freak riding
00:46:51
accident
00:46:51
her family was naturally surprised now
00:46:54
their doubts have grown into outright
00:46:55
suspicions and led them to a stunning
00:46:58
conclusion on a stormy summer afternoon
00:47:02
a bolt of lightning left a young man at
00:47:04
death's door setting the stage for the
00:47:06
appearance of a mysterious lady in black
00:47:08
and the miraculous resurrection nearly
00:47:13
30 years ago the assassination of
00:47:15
Senator Robert Kennedy shocked the
00:47:17
nation today this man claims at
00:47:19
photographs he took that night could
00:47:21
change the official record but those
00:47:23
pictures have been explicably
00:47:24
disappeared
