Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 3, Episode 16

March 09, 2017 / 42:48

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers four intriguing cases: the suspicious death of Kathy Paige, a UFO encounter by Steven Melac, the murder of trucker Dwayne McCorkendale, and the legend of the Lost Dutchman's mine.

In the first case, Kathy Paige is found dead in her car in VOR, Texas. Initially thought to be an accident, evidence suggests foul play. Her husband, Steve Paige, becomes a suspect, but he maintains his innocence. Kathy's family believes Steve killed her after discovering she was with another man.

Next, Steven Melac recounts a bizarre UFO encounter in Canada that left him with unexplained burns on his body. After seeing a strange craft, he experiences nausea and strange odors, and doctors are baffled by his injuries.

The murder of truck driver Dwayne McCorkendale in Chandler, Oklahoma, is investigated next. He was shot at a rest stop, and authorities suspect a connection to a brown Ford Pinto seen near the scene. The investigation reveals a potential link to a highway stalker.

Finally, the legend of the Lost Dutchman's mine in Arizona is discussed. Treasure hunters have searched for the mine for over a century, with some claiming to have found it, but the exact location remains a mystery.

TL;DR

Four cases: Kathy Paige's suspicious death, Steven Melac's UFO encounter, Dwayne McCorkendale's murder, and the Lost Dutchman's mine legend.

VOR
00:01:35
Texas it's early Dawn there's been a car
00:01:38
crash the woman behind the wheel is dead
00:01:42
her skin cool to the
00:01:45
touch at first glance it appears to be a
00:01:48
tragic accident but within minutes
00:01:51
puzzling details begin to emerge the
00:01:55
dead woman has no obvious wounds and the
00:01:58
car is barely damaged soft drinks in the
00:02:01
front seat haven't even
00:02:03
spilled a woman's feet are pushed back
00:02:06
against the seat rather than stretched
00:02:08
out towards the
00:02:10
pedals she isn't wearing a seat belt yet
00:02:12
the crash had not thrown her
00:02:15
forward being no damage to the interior
00:02:18
of the vehicle and very little if not
00:02:20
any damage to the exterior of the
00:02:21
vehicle and the in deepness of the ditch
00:02:24
plain to see this was a staged incident
00:02:26
instead of an accident so at that point
00:02:28
they thought they had a problem a
00:02:30
questionable
00:02:34
death the woman is Kathy pige a wife and
00:02:38
mother of
00:02:39
two her home is just a 100 yard from the
00:02:42
crash
00:02:44
site when police arrive Kathy's husband
00:02:47
Steve answers the door who is it vter
00:02:52
police I'm Sergeant Mosley the vder
00:02:54
police department are you Mr Paige yes
00:02:57
Mr Paige you know where your wife's at
00:02:58
my wife he said well his wife was not
00:03:00
home and directly looked straight down
00:03:02
the street towards where the car
00:03:04
was this about my wife yes it is sir
00:03:08
sorry to advise you sir we found her
00:03:09
deceased in her vehicle this morning can
00:03:11
we step inside the res St seemed to be
00:03:13
quite upset he began to cry at times and
00:03:16
at times threw himself on the couch
00:03:18
crying but yet he would jump right back
00:03:20
up and we were talking there would be no
00:03:22
signs of Tears in his eyes this seems
00:03:25
strange to me was she in a car accident
00:03:28
sir we don't know all the details we're
00:03:29
still police immediately focused their
00:03:31
investigation on Steve Page of course I
00:03:34
did not kill my wife the evidence
00:03:37
clearly shows that the perpetrator was
00:03:39
someone other than Steve
00:03:44
pige however many people in the small
00:03:46
town ofor Texas are convinced that Steve
00:03:49
Paige did have a strong motive to kill
00:03:51
his wife Paige insists he's
00:03:55
innocent see what you
00:03:58
think Kathy and Steve pige had two
00:04:01
daughters Aaron and Monica they seemed
00:04:05
like the perfect family but apparently
00:04:08
the couple had drifted apart in their
00:04:11
marriage mainly she was uncomfortable
00:04:14
with who she was or at least that was
00:04:17
what she explained to me that she didn't
00:04:18
know who she was she wanted to try to
00:04:20
find out who Kathy was because of that
00:04:23
we talked about separating for a short
00:04:25
period of time and allowing her to
00:04:28
hopefully find herself
00:04:30
Kathy's sister Sher disagrees she says
00:04:33
the marriage was beyond
00:04:35
repair Kathy was definitely moving on in
00:04:38
her life at that point um because the
00:04:41
decision was made for the divorce and
00:04:43
that in itself having a decision like
00:04:45
that finally be resolved in itself was a
00:04:47
rig relief off her back and she was
00:04:49
making plans for
00:04:51
that Steve moved out of the house but
00:04:54
says his relationship with Kathy
00:04:57
remained friendly one day she asked them
00:05:00
to babysit their daughters while she
00:05:01
went out with her friend she said she
00:05:04
was going to meet one of her girlfriends
00:05:06
after work so I went over there she left
00:05:10
at approximately 11:15 to 11:30 to head
00:05:14
to Bowmont to meet her
00:05:17
friend person in the
00:05:20
car when Kathy's body was found she
00:05:23
wasn't wearing any makeup or jewelry the
00:05:26
autopsy showed she had been strangled
00:05:28
and that her nose was broken there were
00:05:31
blood stains on her underwear and skin
00:05:33
but strangely there was no blood on her
00:05:36
outer
00:05:37
clothing Kathy Paige was not killed in
00:05:40
her
00:05:42
vehicle she was killed at another
00:05:44
location cleaned up redressed and placed
00:05:46
back in her vehicle and and after the
00:05:49
vehicle had been rolled into the
00:05:51
ditch police reconstructed Cathy's Final
00:05:55
hours they learned that she'd had sex
00:05:58
shortly before she died
00:06:00
Kathy did not meet her girlfriend but
00:06:03
instead spent the evening with a male
00:06:05
lover he freely admitted that on the
00:06:08
night Kathy died they had sex at a motel
00:06:12
goodbye
00:06:14
thanks he came to the police station he
00:06:17
gave us a statement and also voluntarily
00:06:20
gave us a polygraph examination which he
00:06:22
passed with flying
00:06:24
colors the autopsy confirmed that Kathy
00:06:27
did have sex on the night she died
00:06:30
the results also revealed that whoever
00:06:32
Kathy slept with had a
00:06:34
vasectomy however that didn't match
00:06:37
Kathy's secret lover but it did match
00:06:39
her estranged
00:06:42
husband he had had sex with Kathy the
00:06:44
night she died and claimed it was before
00:06:48
she went
00:06:49
out come on she was getting ready she
00:06:51
just got out of the shower I approached
00:06:53
her about sex and we had sex before she
00:06:56
left before she got dressed
00:06:58
even I personally don't believe that
00:07:00
that happened she wouldn't have been
00:07:03
with Steve before being with another man
00:07:06
um she hadn't been with Steve in a long
00:07:08
time he's already sleeping on the
00:07:10
[Music]
00:07:13
couch for Kathy's family there is only
00:07:16
one possible scenario it all began with
00:07:19
two phone calls I was talking to a
00:07:22
sister-in-law of Steve's and she said
00:07:25
that she knew for a fact that Steve made
00:07:27
two phone calls
00:07:29
Steve called this one number and uh the
00:07:32
girl answered and he hung up and then
00:07:34
the second phone number was called and
00:07:36
they said the name of the hotel and he
00:07:38
hung up and so he already knew where she
00:07:42
might be or
00:07:43
was I feel like she came in that night
00:07:46
and come in the back door after she done
00:07:47
parked the car and he was asleep sitting
00:07:49
in a chair in the front room and when
00:07:50
she went on in the bathroom and changed
00:07:52
clothes took a makeup off took a jewelry
00:07:55
and all off and he heard it probably in
00:07:58
the bathroom
00:07:59
and he got up and demanded sex with her
00:08:01
or whatever got in a
00:08:03
fight Kathy's family believes the fight
00:08:06
escalated Steve raped
00:08:10
Kathy then strangled
00:08:12
her then Steve realizing what had
00:08:15
happened he wants to redress her if you
00:08:17
look at the violent crime profile it
00:08:19
fits into a tea you know the remorse she
00:08:21
want to redress you don't want them to
00:08:23
be found naked or bloody so there was an
00:08:26
attempt to clean her up and redress her
00:08:30
but things were forgotten for instance
00:08:32
her jewelry and her
00:08:35
socks reason it comes down on me is
00:08:37
because I'm the
00:08:39
husband I'm the estranged husband to
00:08:42
make it even worse and because of her
00:08:45
actions I am being blamed for her
00:08:48
actions she was out seeing another guy
00:08:52
so therefore it could only have been me
00:08:54
I must have found out somehow how
00:08:56
according to the police and became enr
00:08:59
aged and committed
00:09:02
murder Steve has his own theory about
00:09:05
who killed his wife okay yeah yeah I
00:09:08
received threats on the phone that the
00:09:11
same thing that happened to my wife
00:09:13
could happen to me there was a certain
00:09:15
person here in Bowmont that was bandied
00:09:18
about as a person who may have been
00:09:20
involved it's a very prominent family uh
00:09:23
an Italian family even
00:09:26
uh to let you know that they're
00:09:28
considered part of the Bowmont
00:09:31
Mafia the murder of Kathy pige has never
00:09:35
been
00:09:35
solved however Kathy's family won a
00:09:38
wrongful death civil suit against Steve
00:09:41
Pig and police still consider him a
00:09:44
person of interest in this

00:09:56
next a man in Canada claims he had a
00:09:59
frightening encounter with a
00:10:10
UFO people who claim to see UFOs
00:10:13
typically don't have any evidence to
00:10:15
verify their stories but the eyewitness
00:10:18
that you're about to meet came back with
00:10:20
more than a tall tale the evidence of
00:10:23
his encounter was actually burned into
00:10:26
his body
00:10:32
Steven melac and his wife came to Canada
00:10:34
from Poland after World War
00:10:37
II Steven was an industrial mechanic in
00:10:40
a local cement
00:10:42
plant he was also an avid rock
00:10:46
collector I love nature I love birds
00:10:51
animals every weekend I usually travel
00:10:54
go to the out in the country and
00:10:57
snooping in the rock
00:11:01
one weekend he was prospecting in the
00:11:03
Hills East of Winnipeg when he was
00:11:05
suddenly distracted by a noisy flock of
00:11:09
geese I notice two cigarette like shape
00:11:16
Kinks with the hump in the
00:11:20
middle I said what the hell is
00:11:24
that one stay in the
00:11:27
air and the other one is coming down
00:11:30
down
00:11:32
down I start looking for Marks NASA or
00:11:39
something written on it no nothing I
00:11:42
didn't see anything on it but still I
00:11:45
was thinking that
00:11:48
probably experimenting vehicle from
00:11:52
United
00:11:55
States Steven made this sketch of the
00:11:57
strange craft just after it
00:12:00
landed I do remember one description
00:12:03
that he gave at the time he said that
00:12:04
the skin of the craft the outside of the
00:12:06
craft was Flawless Stan mlac was only 10
00:12:10
years old at the time it was as though
00:12:12
you had milled out of a solid block of
00:12:14
steel this disc this saucer with the
00:12:17
Dome on top Steven told his son that
00:12:20
after a few minutes the door of the
00:12:22
craft slowly
00:12:25
opened when the gate opened there was a
00:12:30
G kind of shy talk like a like a kids in
00:12:36
problem or
00:12:38
something as he drew closer to the door
00:12:41
the light was so bright that he had to
00:12:43
snap down the visor on his safety
00:12:45
[Music]
00:12:51
goggles then after a few moments the
00:12:54
door suddenly shut
00:13:00
Steven says the craft then rotated
00:13:03
counterclockwise it knocked them
00:13:04
backwards and his shirt caught on
00:13:10
fire after igniting with the fire the
00:13:14
craft lifts up 30 to 40 ft and
00:13:18
vanished and then I decided say said now
00:13:22
is the time for me to buzz off from
00:13:25
here so I started going and shock Steven
00:13:30
headed back towards his car he was
00:13:32
nauseous and vomited several
00:13:36
times disoriented he checked his Compass
00:13:39
trying to find his way Southeast to the
00:13:43
road the needle went
00:13:47
haywire Steven made his best guess at
00:13:50
the right direction 9 hours later he
00:13:53
finally arrived back home in
00:13:57
Winnipeg he was badly burned and still
00:14:00
disoriented which left doctors
00:14:03
baffled at that point in time the
00:14:07
diagnosis if you can call it that was
00:14:11
Burns and sure they were Burns yes heat
00:14:13
caused
00:14:14
Burns what they couldn't diagnose and
00:14:17
didn't have a clue about was what
00:14:19
appeared below the chest on the abdomen
00:14:22
the exact same pattern of holes that was
00:14:25
on the grid on the side of the craft in
00:14:28
the same in the same rows in the same
00:14:31
number appeared as red spots on his
00:14:33
lower abdomen red
00:14:36
dots Steven was released from the
00:14:38
hospital but his nausea continued and
00:14:41
his body had a strange odor of burning
00:14:45
sulfur there was this sulfur ozone
00:14:49
electric burning motor stink about him
00:14:51
it's like he's carrying Aura the smell
00:14:53
wherever you walked and you got close to
00:14:55
you you could you could smell this
00:14:56
nothing bad showers wouldn't take it out
00:14:59
that lasted for
00:15:00
weeks Steven was tested for radiation
00:15:03
poisoning the results were
00:15:06
negative no one could explain what
00:15:09
caused the strange burns on his body or
00:15:12
the sulfur
00:15:14
odor the Physicians were actually unable
00:15:17
to determine many of mik's ailments they
00:15:19
knew for example he was physically
00:15:21
thermally burned his chest was burned
00:15:25
and singed but the pattern lower down on
00:15:27
his chest was very very unusual it was
00:15:30
eventually determined that it was a
00:15:31
chemical burn not a radiation burn
00:15:34
although he did have some symptoms that
00:15:36
might have suggested that some people
00:15:37
that some sort of radiation effects
00:15:39
might have been
00:15:42
involved 6 weeks after the encounter
00:15:45
Steven and a friend went looking for the
00:15:47
site Bob come quick after several hours
00:15:50
they found a burnt out Circle the same
00:15:53
size as the craft Steven had seen it was
00:15:57
more than 30 ft
00:15:59
wide this is it I knew it I told you on
00:16:04
this Barren patch of rock was a circular
00:16:07
ring of vegetation dead pine needles
00:16:11
dirt leaves that sort of thing the rock
00:16:14
had been swept clean except for this
00:16:16
ring which was surrounding this
00:16:18
area they also noticed that a few of the
00:16:21
trees appeared to have dead branches as
00:16:24
if something had either come in and and
00:16:27
touched them or brushed by them with a
00:16:28
an intense heat or some other
00:16:32
effects within days a team of experts
00:16:35
from the United States working with the
00:16:37
Royal Canadian Air Force converged on
00:16:40
the site they took measurements
00:16:42
cataloged soil samples and checked for
00:16:46
radiation the levels appeared quite High
00:16:49
and the health department considered
00:16:51
quarantining the
00:16:55
area later however they discovered that
00:16:58
the high level were caused by an
00:17:00
unrelated vein of radium which ran under
00:17:03
the entire
00:17:06
region n this is my colleague Dr Shaw
00:17:10
he's a radiologist meanwhile Stevens
00:17:13
Burns suddenly flared up
00:17:17
again his doctors remained
00:17:20
puzzled after every 3 months my Burns
00:17:24
were coming back showing up again and
00:17:27
burning
00:17:29
and burning and vomiting to this day you
00:17:32
can if you let you can press into his
00:17:34
skin and feel subcutaneous scar tissue
00:17:37
in the form of those burns on his chest
00:17:41
which he playfully calls his buttons and
00:17:44
it's there you cannot deny this this is
00:17:46
there cracks one year after Steven's
00:17:50
close encounter he and a friend return
00:17:53
to the
00:17:55
site so where is it is it in this crack
00:17:58
just about Center a little north of
00:18:00
Center the guer counter Rose very very
00:18:06
dramatically at that point they scooped
00:18:09
out almost half a Jar full of what
00:18:12
appeared to be molten rock or molten
00:18:15
metal of some sort quite
00:18:18
radioactive according to Ed Barker the
00:18:21
material was an extremely rare grade of
00:18:24
silver it was coated with pitch blend
00:18:27
ore which contained both radioactive
00:18:29
uranium and
00:18:31
radium why would particles and metal
00:18:34
fragments of this size and radioactivity
00:18:37
have been missed by all previous
00:18:39
investigators and this is one mystery
00:18:41
that we don't have definite answers to
00:18:43
this day I'd like to think that one
00:18:45
day we'll get a letter from the US
00:18:48
government and it'll say we have the two
00:18:50
craft in a hanger over here and we were
00:18:52
experimenting with them at the time
00:18:53
sorry and I'd want to go and see them
00:18:56
and I'm sure Dad would too and that
00:18:57
would be great
00:18:59
what would be worse is to have this
00:19:01
thing dragged to a point and drag on
00:19:03
where it's never
00:19:05
explained Steven mlac and his wife
00:19:08
remained in Manitoba until his death
00:19:10
over 30 years after his
00:19:14
encounter The Unexplained burn marks on
00:19:16
his chest never went away no matter what
00:19:20
others said Steven died believing he had
00:19:23
seen something not of this Earth
00:19:31
next a highway stalker may be connected
00:19:34

trucker Chandler
00:19:51
Oklahoma and Anonymous caller reports a
00:19:54
body lying beside a phone booth at a
00:19:56
highway rest stop
00:20:00
authorities arrive to find the man has
00:20:02
been
00:20:04
murdered coins are scattered all around
00:20:07
his
00:20:10
body the dead man is Dwayne mccorkendale
00:20:14
a 27-year-old truck driver and father of
00:20:18
twin girls he has been killed by a
00:20:20
single shotgun blast fired at close
00:20:23
range the apparent motive
00:20:27
robbery if Dwayne had been killed in an
00:20:30
accident I could have stood it a lot
00:20:34
better it seemed so ironic that he was
00:20:36
killed for
00:20:38
money when the last thing a trucker will
00:20:40
do is carry very much for that very
00:20:42
[Music]
00:20:44
reason every day thousands of big rigs
00:20:47
roll across the highways of America CB
00:20:50
radios are their Lifeline to the rest of
00:20:52
the world but for Dwayne mccorkendale a
00:20:55
casual conversation over the airwaves
00:20:58
may have signed his death
00:21:01
warrant double wh headed back to Kanas
00:21:03
City come on back Dwayne's final run
00:21:05
began like any other he left Detroit
00:21:08
Michigan headed for Oklahoma City laugh
00:21:11
the two baby girls waiting for me back
00:21:13
there mccorkendale made a regular run
00:21:16
bringing parts to an Oklahoma City
00:21:18
Automobile
00:21:20
Plant we have no reason to believe
00:21:22
anything was different that
00:21:24
night he enters the turnpike he's given
00:21:26
a a ticket with the time on on it and
00:21:29
through that ticket we're able to
00:21:31
determine that he made no other stops he
00:21:33
drove directly from the turnpike gate to
00:21:35
the rest
00:21:37
area other truckers reported that late
00:21:40
in the afternoon Dwayne told him he was
00:21:42
pulling over at the Chandler rest stop
00:21:45
to call his wife yeah I'm going to pull
00:21:46
over here at this rest and call her wife
00:21:48
see how things back at home we'll catch
00:21:50
you on the other side we see you later
00:21:52
it's double we going byebye we theorized
00:21:54
that someone had been listening to him
00:21:56
on the CB uh and actually followed him
00:21:58
into that rest area or perhaps was
00:22:00
already there waiting for
00:22:05
him it looked like he was walking up to
00:22:07
the telephone perhaps counting change
00:22:09
out in his hand since there was change
00:22:11
there at the base of the phone booth and
00:22:14
was killed as he stepped up to make the
00:22:15
call
00:22:30
whoever was involved in this killed
00:22:32
mccorkendale just shot him in the back
00:22:34
and he was dead before he
00:22:36
ground then checked him to see if he had
00:22:39
any money on him any valuables at
00:22:43
all people like that are to us scary
00:22:46
because those type of people in our
00:22:48
minds are very likely to do it
00:22:50
again we got the only items missing were
00:22:53
Dwayne's keys and his
00:22:55
wallet investigators estimate the
00:22:58
Killer's total take was no more than
00:23:01
$25 early on in the investigation our
00:23:05
leads were thin one of the things that
00:23:07
the agent started doing is he started
00:23:09
putting notices in the trucker magazines
00:23:11
across the United States and the call
00:23:13
started coming
00:23:14
in within days several truckers called
00:23:17
investigators about a brown Ford Pino
00:23:21
equipped with a CB
00:23:25
radio time of the mccor Andale death we
00:23:27
have reports that the pinto was driving
00:23:30
very erratically on the highway uh
00:23:32
trying to cut 18 wheelers
00:23:35
off hey man what do you think you're
00:23:37
doing trying to get somebody hurt out
00:23:39
there well you don't know who you're
00:23:40
messing with good buddy we'll drive
00:23:42
anyway we won't hey man ain't no way to
00:23:45
B come on now behave out here you going
00:23:47
to get somebody hurt so we've already
00:23:49
killed one trucker and we'll kill
00:23:51
another if you stay our way and when the
00:23:54
truck driver would call them on the CB
00:23:57
they were abusive they they said that uh
00:23:59
leave us alone or or we'll do to you
00:24:02
what we did to to this other trucker 3
00:24:05
weeks later authorities received a call
00:24:07
from another trucker who reported a
00:24:10
strange encounter he had the day before
00:24:13
the murder while he was having lunch at
00:24:15
a rest stop he was approached by a young
00:24:18
woman L you got any dope you can let us
00:24:21
have really need something she looked
00:24:23
kind of trashy I mean it looked like she
00:24:25
had been on something and she was just
00:24:27
awful shaky he might be my friend we um
00:24:30
we've been down in Texas visiting some
00:24:32
friends we're trying to get back to
00:24:33
Alabama can you can you help us find the
00:24:36
road to get there I kind of turned to
00:24:39
reach to get a map and next thing she's
00:24:41
got her hold the front half inside the
00:24:42
truck we just need a few Bo I really
00:24:46
need about that time this Brown penel
00:24:48
pulled up and then she jumped down off
00:24:50
the truck and they took
00:24:53
off the next day just 13 Mi south on the
00:24:57
same Highway Dwayne mandelle was gunned
00:25:03
down after I read that article I thought
00:25:05
maybe I'm lucky that I didn't get out of
00:25:07
the truck otherwise I might have been
00:25:09
the one that would have got
00:25:12
shot while we have no way of knowing if
00:25:14
the pinto was actually involved in this
00:25:16
or not it is without a doubt our
00:25:18
strongest lead and we have got to locate
00:25:19
the pinto and ultimately the people to
00:25:21
talk to them to see if if nothing else
00:25:22
we can eliminate them from this from
00:25:24
this
00:25:26
situation today authorities are no
00:25:28
closer to finding the Pendle and Dwayne
00:25:31
mccor canel's killer than the day he
00:25:34
died the occupants of the penno are
00:25:37
described as a white male and a black
00:25:39
male sometimes accompanied by a white
00:25:46
woman if you have a tip that could help

legend of the Lost Dutchman's mind it's

00:26:13
found Arizona Superstition Mountains a
00:26:17
desolate Wasteland but Legend has it
00:26:20
that these mountains contain the richest
00:26:23
deposits of gold in
00:26:25
America the Lost Dutchman's
00:26:29
mine the exact location of the Lost
00:26:32
Dutchman's mind remains a mystery it was
00:26:35
supposedly discovered by a German
00:26:37
prospector more than a 100 years ago
00:26:40
today all that L gold would be worth
00:26:44
over
00:26:45
$200
00:26:50
million Jacob Waltz was a student of
00:26:53
Mining and he knew what he was doing the
00:26:56
old-timers were very very St to the fact
00:26:59
of geology they knew what they were
00:27:01
looking for if you're going to go out in
00:27:03
these mountains anywhere and look for
00:27:05
gold you really want to go to places
00:27:07
where gold has been found superstitions
00:27:09
would be an exception you wouldn't go in
00:27:10
there but Jacob Waltz did Prospect in
00:27:14
those rugged mountains and apparently
00:27:16
struck a rich vein of
00:27:21
gold when Waltz was 80 years old he
00:27:25
decided to hide his mind to protect it
00:27:28
he dug a hole 6 feet deep at its
00:27:31
entrance he then laid in two rows of
00:27:33
logs and topped them with the dirt and
00:27:39
Stones Walt who was nicknamed the
00:27:42
Dutchman bragged that you can drive a
00:27:44
pack train over the entrance to the mine
00:27:47
and never know that it was
00:27:49
[Music]
00:27:51
there several months after Walt closed
00:27:54
up the mine he got pneumonia and was
00:27:56
taken to the home of his friend Julia
00:28:01
Thomas on his deathbed he told her there
00:28:04
was gold from the Mind stash under his
00:28:07
bed he said that's what I've been living
00:28:09
on all these years he took out the box
00:28:12
they opened it and their comment was my
00:28:15
God that's rich he said it's a vain he
00:28:18
said there's enough in sight to make
00:28:20
millionaires out of 20
00:28:22
men the Dutchman gave Julia and a local
00:28:25
minor Reinhardt Petr only Clues to the
00:28:28
mines location the northwest corner of
00:28:31
the Superstition Mountains take the take
00:28:34
the trail
00:28:36
in he died before he could give them a
00:28:39
map that showed the exact location of
00:28:42
the
00:28:45
mine soon after waltz's death Julia
00:28:48
Reinhardt Petr and his brother Herman
00:28:51
searched for the mine using the vague
00:28:53
Clues Waltz had given
00:28:56
them he said the settings Sun Shines
00:28:59
into the entrance to by mine and
00:29:01
Glitters on the gold so it must have
00:29:03
faced to the West he said you take the
00:29:06
first gorge on the South Side from the
00:29:08
West End of the range he said that you
00:29:11
can see Weaver's needle to the south
00:29:14
from above my
00:29:16
mind they went in there for almost 5
00:29:18
weeks they came out without any gold and
00:29:21
this was noted in the Arizona Republican
00:29:24
in 1892 in fact they called it the queer
00:29:27
quest in to
00:29:30
go Julia invested everything she owned
00:29:33
into the Expedition but she returned
00:29:36
broke she never again set foot in the
00:29:39
Superstition
00:29:41
Mountains Herman Pat trash accused his
00:29:43
brother Reinhardt of getting Jacob's
00:29:46
directions wrong they never spoke
00:29:49
again Reinhardt continued to search for
00:29:52
the mind but when he realized he would
00:29:54
never find it he took his own life
00:30:00
almost 100 years later a modern-day
00:30:03
treasure hunter claimed he found the
00:30:07
mine his name was Walt gazler head chef
00:30:11
at the builtmore hotel in Phoenix Walt
00:30:15
used Clues handed down from Jacob's
00:30:17
deathbed and spent years looking for the
00:30:20
legendary M nice to meet you have a seat
00:30:23
thank you when his health began to fail
00:30:26
Walt contacted two Prospect s Bob Corbin
00:30:29
who was then the Attorney General of
00:30:32
Arizona and Tom cinor a local
00:30:36
historian he wanted to get together with
00:30:38
me so that we could perhaps go with him
00:30:40
and continue looking for the mine and
00:30:42
with his directions after he had died
00:30:45
and he gave me his notes as well as a
00:30:47
map as to where his Camp was and where
00:30:49
he believed the mine to
00:30:54
be two months later Walt called Tom he
00:30:58
was very excited and claimed that he had
00:31:01
finally located the Dutchman's M Tom how
00:31:04
are you doing wal Gast called me on
00:31:06
Sunday evening he said I'm going to the
00:31:08
mine I know exactly where it is I just
00:31:12
can't possibly break away in the morning
00:31:13
you and Corbin have to
00:31:15
go Walt gastler was convinced that the
00:31:19
mine existed from the clues that he had
00:31:21
some of those Clues he would not
00:31:23
reveal and the next morning his wife
00:31:26
took him out to the trail head and dro
00:31:28
him all see you in 3 days Walt hiked
00:31:32
alone into the superstitions never to be
00:31:34
seen alive
00:31:38
again his body was founded 3 Days Later
00:31:42
an autopsy proved he had died of a heart
00:31:47
attack I'm Colin yes I'm Roland gastler
00:31:50
how you doing Roland one month after
00:31:52
Walt's death historian Tom cinourn had a
00:31:56
surprise visitor and he check was Rowan
00:31:58
gastler Walt gastler son she said well
00:32:01
you know my dad found the lost Dutchman
00:32:03
in the superstitions and he got out a
00:32:05
piece of gold showed it to me Bo that
00:32:07
stuff really looks good it looked very
00:32:08
similar to the gold that allegedly came
00:32:11
out of the LOF du mine where did this
00:32:13
come from came right straight out of my
00:32:16
dad's backpack Bob Roland insisted his
00:32:19
dad had found the lost man he wanted to
00:32:22
retrace his father's steps and he took
00:32:24
back Walt's old maps and notes
00:32:28
yes that is my dad you're his son you're
00:32:31
the one that should go
00:32:34
to two months
00:32:36
passed Tom never heard whether Roland's
00:32:39
search was
00:32:41
successful one night after giving a
00:32:43
lecture Tom was approached by another
00:32:46
stranger Mr cinor yes hi I'm Roland
00:32:49
gastler I've been this claimed that he
00:32:53
was Roland gastler I think my jaw
00:32:55
dropped 10 foot to the ground it wasn't
00:32:57
the same guy I said I ought to ask you
00:32:58
for driver's license or something I said
00:33:00
you're the second rolling gastler I've
00:33:02
run into in the last couple of months
00:33:05
sure looks like you're Roland gastler
00:33:07
yes sir after meeting two Roland gers I
00:33:10
wondered who was really Roland gastler
00:33:13
I'm yes it appeared the first Roland
00:33:15
gastler was an impostor he apparently
00:33:19
wanted Walt's Maps so that he could find
00:33:21
the mine
00:33:23
himself but where did he get the gold
00:33:26
ore sample it came right straight out of
00:33:28
when Walt died the sheriff's report
00:33:31
listed a backpack among his belongings
00:33:34
but the real roling gastler never
00:33:37
received it Don shade the man who found
00:33:40
Walt's body also remembered seeing the
00:33:43
backpack and he noticed the stranger in
00:33:46
the area that day there was another man
00:33:49
in the area at the time when Tom cinor
00:33:52
later gave us a description of the man
00:33:54
that came to him and showed him some
00:33:56
gold it jibed up with the man that we
00:34:00
saw in here some believe that the fake
00:34:04
Roland gastler was in the mountains when
00:34:06
Walt died and stole the backpack with
00:34:09
its precious ore i' like to believe Walt
00:34:11
found it he spent so many years looking
00:34:13
for it and the last thing he would have
00:34:15
done in his life before he died would
00:34:17
have found the Mind I'd like to believe
00:34:18
that when Jacob Waltz died he left a
00:34:22
trunk of gold and a list of Clues he
00:34:25
also started the legend with which has
00:34:28
captured the dreams of three generations
00:34:31
of treasure
00:34:32
Hunters I have good reason to believe
00:34:35
that the Dutchman's Legend could be true
00:34:37
I've seen the ore that was under his bed
00:34:39
when he died I've seen the assay report
00:34:42
on it and a today's gold prices that ore
00:34:45
would be worth over $2.2 million a ton
00:34:48
it's the richest gold ore I've ever seen
00:34:50
in my life and I've seen a lot of gold
00:34:53
door this could have been gassers trick
00:34:56
in the trail cuz Superstition Mountains
00:34:58
have been reclassified as a federally
00:35:01
owned Wilderness Area if the mine were
00:35:04
found today by the fake Roman gastler or
00:35:07
anyone else all the gold would belong to
00:35:11
the
00:35:12
government this does not prevent modern
00:35:15
Prospectors from still searching for the
00:35:17
Lost Dutchman's Gold

Mine next a pretty co-ed goes for a
00:35:25
morning bike ride and never
00:35:38

Indiana 19-year-old Jill Burman leaves
00:35:46
her home after
00:35:47
breakfast she doesn't have to be in
00:35:49
class until noon so she heads off for
00:35:52
her morning
00:35:53
ride Jill treated a bike ride like a
00:35:56
workout she took it pretty seriously and
00:35:58
she wanted to ride hard and her friends
00:36:01
have told me that going for a bike ride
00:36:04
with Jill was not very much fun because
00:36:06
they couldn't keep
00:36:08
up Jill is a business major at Indiana
00:36:13
University everyone describes her as a
00:36:15
funloving All-American Girl I filed her
00:36:18
purse later that day Jill's parents
00:36:21
become alarmed when she doesn't return
00:36:23
home it's way after dark it's very late
00:36:27
it's cold outside and I was alternating
00:36:30
between being sad or worried or maybe
00:36:34
even angry thinking why would she do
00:36:36
this why would she go off and not tell
00:36:38
us what she's up
00:36:40
to it was then that we both were really
00:36:43
I think terrified as to just what might
00:36:46
have happened to
00:36:48
her Jill Berman had vanished police
00:36:52
thought she might have been abducted or
00:36:54
that she had been the victim of a hit
00:36:56
and run accident but there were no signs
00:36:58
of Foul Play and no body there were just
00:37:03
no
00:37:05
answers news of Jill's disappearance
00:37:07
spread
00:37:11
quickly soon hundreds from the community
00:37:14
joined investigators in their
00:37:17
search local cycling clubs traced the
00:37:20
routes that she may have
00:37:22
taken they had groups of people not only
00:37:25
searching the roads but about 15 50 ft
00:37:27
or so off on each side of the road and
00:37:31
the woods and The Ravines and and places
00:37:33
that we know that Jill like to
00:37:35
ride despite their massive effort
00:37:38
Searchers found no trace of
00:37:43
Jill but then a vital clue
00:37:46
surfaced a resident of Bloomington
00:37:49
reported that on the same day Jill had
00:37:51
disappeared he had found an abandoned
00:37:54
bicycle the serial number identified it
00:37:57
as Jill's
00:37:59
bike investigators searched the area
00:38:02
where the bike was discovered but they
00:38:04
found nothing authorities were
00:38:08
puzzled Jill was last seen headed south
00:38:11
but her bike was found 10 mies Northwest
00:38:15
of her home that's not a route that she
00:38:18
would have been on that day that's about
00:38:20
10 Mi away it's through town it's
00:38:24
through a great deal of traffic and she
00:38:27
wouldn't run in the
00:38:29
traffic we've had any number of theories
00:38:31
in this and certainly one of those
00:38:33
theories is that Jill was targeted and
00:38:36
that they place the bicycle in an area
00:38:40
different from where she was last seen
00:38:42
in an effort to try and uh uh at least
00:38:45
lead us away from the area in which he
00:38:47
was in fact
00:38:48
abducted she's not with the bike and the
00:38:51
bike is somewhere she would not have
00:38:53
ridden and this isn't making any sense
00:38:56
this is even more more mysterious and
00:38:59
more scary now because now I don't know
00:39:01
what to
00:39:02
think the day after the bike was found a
00:39:05
Walkman radio mysteriously turned up in
00:39:08
the parking lot of a local church it was
00:39:11
the same model and color as the one Jill
00:39:13
usually took with her while
00:39:15
[Music]
00:39:17
cycling at the same moment the Walkman
00:39:19
was found an eyewitness saw a suspicious
00:39:22
pickup truck leaving the parking
00:39:25
lot there's no indication that that
00:39:27
pickup truck was related to the Walkman
00:39:30
however we've attempted to try and find
00:39:32
the um not only the pickup truck but
00:39:34
certainly the the individual driving it
00:39:36
we've been unsuccessful in doing
00:39:38
that a year later in Kentucky a female
00:39:42
cyclist was almost
00:39:45
abducted a driver intentionally hit her
00:39:48
and then tried to drag her into his car
00:39:51
but he was chased Away by a witness a
00:39:53
police artist made this sketch of the
00:39:56
suspect authorities believe he may have
00:39:59
been involved in Jill's
00:40:01
disappearance another theory is that
00:40:04
Jill was the victim of a hidden run
00:40:07
accident we believe that it was
00:40:09
certainly possible that that Jill was
00:40:11
struck by a group of people who were
00:40:12
high on drugs alcohol or both that these
00:40:15
folks panicked and instead of leaving
00:40:17
her or trying to get help for her they
00:40:21
put her and the bike and a vehicle and
00:40:24
and took her
00:40:27
however there was very little damage to
00:40:29
Jill's bicycle perhaps Jill was not on
00:40:33
her bike when she was hit that's one of
00:40:35
the hardest things about this whole
00:40:38
situation is the not
00:40:42
knowing without knowing whether she's
00:40:44
alive without knowing where she
00:40:47
[Music]
00:40:49
is I miss that smile I miss her
00:40:53
laugh it's a nightmare that just keeps
00:40:56
going on
00:41:01
every night we uh light the candle on
00:41:04
the front doorstep and it stays lit all
00:41:07
night until the next
00:41:09
morning kind of a Beacon of
00:41:13
Hope and just as a reminder that Jill is
00:41:16
still
00:41:17
missing and every day we pray that
00:41:21
that's going to be the day that we find
00:41:22
you

update 3 years after Jill Burman
00:41:33
disappeared her remains were found in a
00:41:36
remote area outside of
00:41:39
Bloomington it took another 3 years for
00:41:42
authorities to piece together a case
00:41:44
against John R Meyers who lived just 3
00:41:48
miles from where Jill's bike was
00:41:52
found he apparently had become upset
00:41:55
with his ex-girlfriend and took his
00:41:57
anger out on
00:42:00
Jill a jury found Meers guilty of
00:42:03
murder he was sentenced to 65 years in
00:42:08
prison
