Forensic Files - Season 8, Episode 6 - Tourist Trap - Full Episode

December 16, 2021 / 22:08

This episode discusses tourist crime in South Florida, featuring the stories of Uve Wilhelm Rockabrand and Helga Loos, who both faced violent attacks.

In September 1993, Uve Wilhelm Rockabrand was shot and killed during a robbery attempt while on his honeymoon in Florida. His wife, Catherine, was unharmed but the incident highlighted the dangers tourists faced.

Helga Loos, a journalist, was attacked shortly after her vacation in Florida. She and her mother were assaulted in a carjacking attempt, resulting in serious injuries for Helga.

Detectives Bassam Fidel and Laura Lafave investigated Helga's case, which involved a bite mark left by the assailant, leading to the identification of Stanley Cornett as the attacker.

Despite Cornett's claims of innocence and an alibi, he was convicted based on bite mark evidence and sentenced to life in prison. Helga later founded an advocacy group for crime victims.

TL;DR

Tourist crime in Florida escalated in the 1990s, leading to violent attacks on visitors like Helga Loos and Uve Wilhelm Rockabrand.

at one time tourists in south florida
00:00:08
were a favorite target for criminals
00:00:13
hundreds of visitors were robbed some
00:00:15
were assaulted and eight were murdered
00:00:19

made an unexpected journey from tourist

in september of 1993
00:00:58
oovy wilhelm rockabrand and his wife
00:01:01
flew from germany to florida to spend
00:01:03
their honeymoon
00:01:04
they rented a car for the short trip to
00:01:06
their hotel
00:01:08
the two german tourists were less than
00:01:10
five minutes from the airport just time
00:01:12
enough to read safety precautions in a
00:01:14
visitor's guide when they became the
00:01:16
newest victims
00:01:22
a band pulled behind them and ran their
00:01:24
car
00:01:26
the couple knew
00:01:27
this wasn't an accident but a ploy
00:01:30
robbers use to get drivers to stop their
00:01:32
cars
00:01:34
they call it bump and rob but the rocker
00:01:36
bronze did what they were supposed to do
00:01:38
and did not stop then the gunman pulled
00:01:41
alongside and fired a single shot
00:01:43
[Music]
00:01:46
thirty-three-year-old uve wilhelm was
00:01:49
killed instantly his 27 year old bride
00:01:52
catherine was unharmed
00:01:55
by the end of the year
00:01:56
there were eight tourist murders in
00:01:58
south florida hundreds more were robbed
00:02:01
and many more seriously injured
00:02:04
tourists were easy targets
00:02:08
you can't change people's behavior
00:02:10
the lost tourists
00:02:12
looking at street signs a holding up of
00:02:14
maps the camera bags the luggage in the
00:02:16
back seat
00:02:18
you know it's not too hard to identify a
00:02:20
tourist especially around the airport
00:02:23
and they have what criminals want
00:02:25
cameras jewelry video equipment laptop
00:02:28
computers and they usually carry plenty
00:02:31
of cash
00:02:34
helga loose covered these tourists
00:02:36
crimes as a journalist for german
00:02:38
television
00:02:39
i was working on a piece that was
00:02:42
focused on the rash of crime that had
00:02:44
taken place in the united states
00:02:46
specifically tourist directed crime in
00:02:49
florida and during the course of that
00:02:51
piece we talked about safety tips for
00:02:54
german tourists that would be traveling
00:02:55
to the united states
00:02:58
elga and her mother had scheduled their
00:03:00
own florida vacation before the crime
00:03:03
spree started
00:03:04
we decided to keep our plans of flying
00:03:06
into miami and then going on to the
00:03:08
florida keys just for four days very
00:03:10
brief
00:03:12
stay but particularly because i
00:03:14
had just done this piece about safety
00:03:16
tips
00:03:17
and felt that my awareness was
00:03:20
you know pretty strong at that point
00:03:23
their vacation was relaxing and
00:03:25
uneventful
00:03:26
their return to the airport was not
00:03:29
[Music]
00:03:31
they got lost looking for the airport
00:03:33
rental car area
00:03:34
[Music]
00:03:35
helga drove onto a side street to turn
00:03:37
around
00:03:38
she soon realized someone was following
00:03:41
her
00:03:42
[Music]
00:03:45
the man reached through the window put
00:03:47
the car into park disconnected the horn
00:03:49
and assaulted the two
00:03:51
my mother said take whatever you want
00:03:54
but please don't hurt us
00:03:56
the passenger from their vehicle said
00:03:59
shut up [ __ ] we're going to kill you
00:04:02
both of the perpetrators were coming
00:04:04
taking turns
00:04:06
beating me through my window and
00:04:09
you know every punch
00:04:12
that
00:04:12
i
00:04:13
took weakened me
00:04:16
the attackers tried desperately to grab
00:04:18
the car keys i was able to get in a good
00:04:22
couple of blows myself
00:04:23
[Music]
00:04:26
somehow helga got the car into gear and
00:04:28
drove away to try to stop her the
00:04:30
attacker bit her arm
00:04:33
i hit the driver from their car with the
00:04:36
front of our car
00:04:37
after a short distance the man was
00:04:40
forced to let go
00:04:42
i had tremendous injuries to my head
00:04:46
my neck my back
00:04:48
dislocated jaw lost the feeling in my
00:04:51
left side of my face which i've never
00:04:53
regained
00:04:54
um and
00:04:56
the bite wound was
00:04:59
very painful
00:05:01
the bite wound was deep
00:05:03
it went through the muscle
00:05:05
even animals don't do what he did the
00:05:07
way he did it
00:05:08
even animals don't do that there's no
00:05:10
need for that
00:05:12
to punch somebody almost killing
00:05:13
paralyzing her and biting her and
00:05:15
destroying her life
00:05:16
there's no need for that at all
00:05:18
helga described the attackers as young
00:05:21
men approximately 25 years old they were
00:05:24
driving a large dark colored car with
00:05:26
tinted windows
00:05:28
most crimes happen and take place in
00:05:30
less than two minutes it's a hit it's a
00:05:33
theft it's a
00:05:35
it's an assault and it happens in a
00:05:37
matter of just
00:05:38
seconds
00:05:40
so a positive identification of a
00:05:42
suspect might be difficult
00:05:45
with no other witnesses or leads
00:05:48
police hoped helga's car would contain
00:05:51
the forensic evidence they needed
00:05:57
in 1993
00:05:59
24 year old helga loose barely escaped
00:06:01
with her life after a harrowing
00:06:03
encounter with two men who attempted to
00:06:06
overpower her
00:06:11
two veteran detectives
00:06:13
bassam fidel and laura lafave with the
00:06:16
hialeah florida robbery squad were
00:06:18
assigned to the case
00:06:20
this particular robbery happened about
00:06:22
10 blocks north of the airport into
00:06:24
hialeah
00:06:25
into a mixed residential commercial
00:06:27
neighborhood
00:06:29
that neighborhood surrounds lejeune road
00:06:32
the only exit or entrance to the airport
00:06:36
here criminals often lie in wait for
00:06:38
their victims
00:06:40
it's the main artery it's easy to hide
00:06:42
it's easy to follow
00:06:45
one way in and one way out of miami
00:06:47
international airport
00:06:49
they're hunters they're hunting for
00:06:50
robbery victims it could have been your
00:06:52
family it could have been anybody in the
00:06:53
community i'm sure as they followed her
00:06:56
and they tailed her and targeted her
00:06:59
the discussion was how were they going
00:07:01
to do it and when were they going to do
00:07:02
it
00:07:03
in what manner
00:07:05
at the time
00:07:06
rental cars were easily identified with
00:07:09
stickers of the rental company and
00:07:11
special license plates beginning with
00:07:13
the letter y or z
00:07:16
despite the increase in tourist crimes
00:07:19
south florida's overall crime rate was
00:07:21
less than the previous year
00:07:24
nevertheless the press coverage had an
00:07:26
impact
00:07:27
[Music]
00:07:28
miami was being hit with tourist robbery
00:07:31
cases almost on a daily basis this was a
00:07:33
city that
00:07:35
they viewed as a violent city and
00:07:38
they had no interest in coming back here
00:07:41
european governments discouraged
00:07:43
traveled to florida and hotel
00:07:45
reservations dropped by 25
00:07:50
ending the crime spree was difficult
00:07:53
victims were often unwilling to return
00:07:55
to florida for court hearings and trials
00:07:59
this kept criminals on the streets
00:08:02
[Music]
00:08:04
most of the crimes were bump and robbed
00:08:07
leaving behind little forensic evidence
00:08:09
but helga's robbery had been unusually
00:08:13
violent
00:08:18
she had a bite mark located on her upper
00:08:21
arm and it was rather clear
00:08:23
i have a sexual battery background
00:08:25
and know
00:08:27
that they were developing bite mark
00:08:29
comparison techniques and the
00:08:32
state-of-the-art place to process her
00:08:33
was the photo lab at the medical
00:08:35
examiner's office
00:08:36
she was very sharp to immediately
00:08:38
address that before the victim left
00:08:40
or before that victim saw treatment
00:08:42
perhaps
00:08:43
sutures or
00:08:44
other miracle treatment which can damage
00:08:46
or alter the bite marks on the victim's
00:08:48
arm
00:08:49
helga agreed to have a forensic
00:08:52
photographer take pictures of the wound
00:08:55
it's not enough just to take a
00:08:57
photograph it has to be
00:08:59
measured properly it has to be put into
00:09:01
perspective it has to be documented
00:09:02
properly it's important to get it done
00:09:05
as quickly as you can things change very
00:09:09
rapidly skin tends to discolor bruising
00:09:12
tends to set in
00:09:14
in every picture
00:09:16
forensic protocol requires the use of a
00:09:19
ruler to provide scale
00:09:21
it's an l ruler
00:09:23
it has three circles on it that allows
00:09:25
us to
00:09:26
make sure that our camera is
00:09:28
perpendicular to our subject and that
00:09:30
will also give us a
00:09:32
sense of scale so we take the flash and
00:09:35
we hold it off to
00:09:36
an angle where we can emphasize the
00:09:39
surface texture of the skin
00:09:42
and forensic photographers take pictures
00:09:44
under many different light sources
00:09:47
conventional light ultraviolet infrared
00:09:50
and fluorescent
00:09:52
these show detail and texture not
00:09:55
revealed by light in the visible
00:09:57
spectrum
00:09:59
many times
00:10:00
there's something there that you can't
00:10:02
see with the naked eye
00:10:04
afterwards investigators examined the
00:10:07
rental car hoping to find fingerprints
00:10:10
but unfortunately the weather was
00:10:13
against us
00:10:15
processing the outside of the vehicle
00:10:16
was impossible
00:10:18
the car was wet because helga had driven
00:10:20
through a thunderstorm on the way to the
00:10:22
airport
00:10:24
the interior material was textured
00:10:27
which yielded no usable prints
00:10:31
no fingerprints no witnesses
00:10:34
and no suspects
00:10:36
helga and her mother left miami not
00:10:39
knowing whether the crime would ever be
00:10:42
solved
00:10:44
and maybe it wouldn't have been
00:10:46
had the perpetrator not left behind
00:10:49
a piece of forensic evidence
00:10:54
[Music]
00:10:57
three weeks after helga loose's assault
00:11:00
she was asked to return to florida to
00:11:02
look through stacks of mug shots
00:11:04
she didn't see her attacker
00:11:07
[Music]
00:11:08
then the detective showed her a photo
00:11:11
array of six
00:11:12
suspects i'll go look at the lineup and
00:11:14
then
00:11:15
she would look at each picture carefully
00:11:17
once she got to his picture to stanley
00:11:18
cornell's picture and he seen immediate
00:11:20
reaction in her
00:11:22
physically and immediate reaction when i
00:11:24
saw the defendant's
00:11:26
face
00:11:28
it was a very very weird mix of emotions
00:11:32
one of
00:11:34
joy
00:11:35
because i found him
00:11:37
and one of complete terror
00:11:41
because it was the first time i had seen
00:11:42
that face
00:11:44
since it was locked on my arm biting
00:11:46
through the muscle
00:11:48
24 year old stanley cornett was a
00:11:50
factory worker with a long criminal
00:11:52
history
00:11:54
since the tourist attacks happened in
00:11:57
different jurisdictions near the airport
00:11:59
police formed a task force to exchange
00:12:02
information
00:12:04
that's how lafayette first learned about
00:12:06
stanley cornett
00:12:08
he was arrested a few days after helga's
00:12:10
attack for a nearly identical crime
00:12:13
[Music]
00:12:16
he allegedly stopped an elderly man in a
00:12:19
rental car and robbed him at gunpoint
00:12:21
but he picked on the wrong man
00:12:25
the victim's son was a miami policeman
00:12:27
who lived just across the street
00:12:30
he called for his son and he came
00:12:32
running out of the house well struggle
00:12:34
ensued and the victim tried to hold back
00:12:37
the robber while he was calling for his
00:12:39
son and the robber at that time bit him
00:12:42
bit him in the upper arm
00:12:48
the similarities in the crimes were
00:12:50
striking
00:12:51
but despite the identification cornet
00:12:53
denied he assaulted helga loost
00:12:56
i had tried a number of these cases
00:12:58
previously
00:12:59
and the issue was always whether the
00:13:02
identification
00:13:03
was enough
00:13:05
to pass muster with a jury especially on
00:13:07
a on a case where all you have is a
00:13:09
single id and a robbery case where
00:13:12
where it took no longer than 20 30
00:13:14
seconds
00:13:17
so investigators wanted to know if there
00:13:20
was any way to tell whether cornett was
00:13:22
the man who bit helga's arm
00:13:26
to find out police went to the same
00:13:29
forensic expert who matched a bite wound
00:13:31
to the notorious serial killer ted bundy
00:13:35
from a bite mark if it's a good one you
00:13:37
can actually get a dental profile of the
00:13:39
suspect for instance an outline of what
00:13:41
his teeth look like if there's a gap or
00:13:43
crooked teeth or whatever
00:13:46
that profile can exclude a suspect or
00:13:49
increase the likelihood that he made the
00:13:51
bite mark
00:13:53
dr souveron had the photos of helga's
00:13:56
bite wound
00:13:57
but he needed cornet's dental impression
00:14:00
for comparison
00:14:02
cornet refused to cooperate
00:14:06
you're not going to touch me basically
00:14:08
what he said
00:14:09
just basically you know you're not
00:14:11
getting anything out of my mouth
00:14:14
except maybe the swear words
00:14:17
they left empty-handed but returned
00:14:19
later with the court order specifying
00:14:22
the use of force if necessary
00:14:24
at which time he reiterated that he
00:14:26
didn't want to cooperate he wasn't going
00:14:28
to open his mouth and dr snooveron very
00:14:30
casually brought out what's called a jaw
00:14:32
jack
00:14:33
for
00:14:34
opening the jaws of cadavers that are in
00:14:37
full rigger mortis you put it in a jaw
00:14:40
and you ratchet on this thing and it'll
00:14:41
open any it'll break your jaw if you're
00:14:43
trying to resist hard enough when
00:14:45
stanley was shown the jaw jack stanley
00:14:47
decided he wanted to cooperate and
00:14:49
supplies with dental impressions
00:14:51
and so
00:14:52
we obtained our dental impressions from
00:14:54
stanley cornet
00:14:56
from those impressions dr seuveron made
00:15:00
these plaster models which allowed him
00:15:02
to duplicate the bite patterns
00:15:05
test bites are made either in wax or in
00:15:08
styrofoam to be able to analyze the
00:15:11
patterns that these teeth are going to
00:15:12
leave
00:15:14
for further evaluation
00:15:16
the biting edges of the plaster teeth
00:15:18
are blackened and the pattern copied
00:15:21
onto a clear acetate for easy comparison
00:15:24
with the photographs
00:15:27
odontologists use a number of different
00:15:29
techniques because there's no way to
00:15:31
accurately estimate the elasticity of
00:15:34
the victim's skin
00:15:36
the teeth have variables the skin has
00:15:38
variables and when this lady was bitten
00:15:41
she didn't just sit there and let this
00:15:42
man
00:15:43
you know
00:15:44
bite her as hard as he could
00:15:46
we're showing this is a dynamic
00:15:48
bite with movement going on in teeth
00:15:51
numbers 24 and 25
00:15:53
made the marks that these arrows pointed
00:15:55
to and then as the bite moved the 26
00:15:58
tooth can make that mark
00:16:00
there is no such thing as a bite
00:16:02
impression match
00:16:04
all experts can say is whether a bite
00:16:07
wound is consistent with a person's
00:16:09
teeth
00:16:10
even if they are it's still not a
00:16:12
hundred percent certain
00:16:15
but with the model wax impression
00:16:17
acetates and precision photographs
00:16:20
dr seuveron zeroed in on three lower
00:16:23
teeth in the bite mark which were
00:16:26
slightly crooked and overlapping
00:16:29
and there was a deep mark made by an
00:16:32
upper tooth
00:16:32
[Music]
00:16:34
even to untrained eyes it looked like
00:16:37
cornett's teeth caused the bite wound in
00:16:39
the photographs
00:16:41
dr seuveron was confident in his
00:16:43
assessment
00:16:44
his teeth were consistent with that bite
00:16:46
and there was nothing there that could
00:16:48
exclude him
00:16:50
stanley cornett was charged with
00:16:52
attempted robbery and aggravated battery
00:16:57
but cornett said he was innocent and
00:16:59
that he had an alibi
00:17:02
a jury would have to decide
00:17:04
which side they believed
00:17:07
the alibi
00:17:08
or the bite impression evidence
00:17:11
[Music]
00:17:13
the ironic situation of having done a
00:17:16
news piece about safety tips
00:17:19
and then going to florida and becoming
00:17:22
part of the crime statistics
00:17:24
even when you think you have all the
00:17:26
tools at your disposal to keep yourself
00:17:29
safe
00:17:30
if you're at the wrong place at the
00:17:32
wrong time anything can happen
00:17:36
as the trial approach for the brutal
00:17:38
assault of helga loose stanley cornett
00:17:41
claimed he had an alibi that he had been
00:17:44
at work at the time of the crime
00:17:46
his work record showed that he was
00:17:48
indeed at work that day
00:17:51
but coronet's co-worker said he didn't
00:17:53
always punch the time clock when leaving
00:17:55
for a break and he worked just 10
00:17:57
minutes away from where helga was
00:17:59
attacked
00:18:01
his supervisor remembers that day in
00:18:03
particular and remembered he left and
00:18:04
never came back he was soon after let go
00:18:06
of that job because of that
00:18:09
so that
00:18:10
melted that alibi it's incredible that
00:18:13
an individual would punch a time card go
00:18:16
to work like we all do in the morning
00:18:18
and he he would leave during his break
00:18:21
and go commit
00:18:23
a violent crime against a tourist
00:18:25
but that's precisely what stanley
00:18:27
cornett did
00:18:29
through various legal tactics
00:18:31
cornett kept delaying his trial
00:18:34
if my victim doesn't want to cooperate
00:18:36
then i have no case
00:18:38
and that's what these criminals count on
00:18:41
that's why they target the tourists
00:18:43
and in this case they picked the wrong
00:18:45
tourist and stanley coronette was
00:18:47
relying on wearing helga loose down to
00:18:50
the point where she just gave up he
00:18:52
underestimated helk
00:18:54
she wasn't going to wear down she came
00:18:55
back for every trial date every
00:18:57
appointment she flew back for
00:19:00
at the trial
00:19:02
helga again identified cornette as the
00:19:04
man who attacked her
00:19:06
facing stanley cornett in court was one
00:19:09
of the hardest things i've ever had to
00:19:11
do through all of my testimony the
00:19:14
defendant
00:19:15
had a smirk on his face
00:19:18
so i tried really hard not to focus on
00:19:20
him
00:19:21
and focus on the prosecutor and the jury
00:19:24
and the judge and the people that were
00:19:26
there to embrace justice
00:19:30
the clarity of the bite impression
00:19:32
photographs taken by a qualified
00:19:34
forensic photographer alongside the cast
00:19:37
of coronet's teeth
00:19:38
were what ultimately convinced the jury
00:19:42
stanley cornett was found guilty of
00:19:45
attempted robbery and aggravated battery
00:19:49
because he was a repeat offender he was
00:19:52
sentenced to life in prison
00:19:54
i tell the detectives if you have a bite
00:19:56
mark case you don't tell the defendant
00:19:59
that you have a bite because they
00:20:01
certainly can alter their teeth it
00:20:03
happened to me two weeks ago where the
00:20:05
defendant when i saw him had had all of
00:20:07
his upper and lower front teeth pulled
00:20:08
while he was in prison he told me he had
00:20:10
a toothache and they pulled his teeth
00:20:12
as a prosecutor at the time
00:20:15
if it was somewhat new to me imagine
00:20:18
how new it was to a jury they had
00:20:20
certainly never heard of anything
00:20:22
remotely similar to bite mark evidence
00:20:24
the bite mark evidence i think sealed
00:20:26
this case
00:20:28
it put the final nail in stanley
00:20:29
coronet's coffin as far as the jury is
00:20:32
concerned i think it was our strongest
00:20:34
piece of evidence
00:20:37
cornet's accomplice in the crime was
00:20:40
never identified
00:20:43
by the end of 1993 the crimes against
00:20:46
vacation travelers in south florida
00:20:48
stopped
00:20:50
why
00:20:51
police increased their surveillance of
00:20:54
the rental car areas
00:20:56
rental agencies removed their stickers
00:20:58
from the cars and ended the practice of
00:21:01
identifiable license plates
00:21:03
[Music]
00:21:05
after her ordeal
00:21:07
helga formed an advocacy group for
00:21:09
victims of crime called
00:21:11
witness justice
00:21:14
she can meet them on a totally different
00:21:15
level than a police officer can
00:21:18
and she can advocate for them
00:21:20
she can be their voice when sometimes
00:21:22
they can't find their voice
00:21:24
maybe it'll be the helgas of this world
00:21:26
that make more victims come back to
00:21:28
court and get more convictions
