May 23, 2019 / 46:53

This episode covers the Gander plane crash, Peggy Lloyd's search for her brother, the de Cloud cult allegations, and a childhood reunion.

The Gander plane crash on December 12, 1985, killed 248 American soldiers. Officially ruled an accident due to ice on the wings, eyewitness accounts and dissenting investigators suggest a possible explosion or terrorist involvement. Family members, including Dr. Douglas Phillips, seek answers about their loved ones' deaths.

Peggy Lloyd, haunted by memories of her brother Arthur, embarks on a quest to find him after discovering an old photograph. Her search leads her to uncover family secrets and ultimately reunite with her father, Curly Lloyd, after decades apart.

Julie Cooper shares her harrowing experience escaping the de Cloud cult, where she faced abuse from its leader, Nelson de Cloud. After years of manipulation, she finds the courage to escape with the help of a satellite dish repairman, Tim Santee, leading to de Cloud's arrest.

The episode concludes with a heartwarming reunion between Judy Davis and her childhood friend Becky Terry, who supported her during her battle with polio. Their emotional reconnection highlights the enduring power of friendship.

00:02:40
these men were members of the elite
00:02:42
101st airborne unit of the United States
00:02:45
Army
00:02:46
on December 12th 1985 they were among
00:02:49
248 young soldiers cut down in their
00:02:51
prime all killed instantly when their
00:02:56
transport plane crashed at gander
00:02:58
Newfoundland it was a worst single air
00:03:00
disaster in US military history
00:03:03
officially the crisis written off to ice
00:03:05
in the planes wings but many of the
00:03:08
young men's families as well as several
00:03:10
key investigators believe it the true
00:03:12
cause of the gandered tragedy remains an
00:03:15
unsolved mystery on December 11th 1985 a
00:03:22
one hundred and first Airborne left
00:03:24
Cairo Egypt on a chartered air aware
00:03:26
dc-8 much like this one they were going
00:03:29
home to Fort Campbell Kentucky after a
00:03:31
six-month peacekeeping mission in the
00:03:33
Sinai following one stop in Germany they
00:03:36
landed for refueling at the gander
00:03:37
Newfoundland Airport in Canada an hour
00:03:42
later just after takeoff tragedy struck
00:03:45
[Music]
00:03:48
the dc-8 crashed less than three miles
00:03:51
from the gander control tower killing
00:03:53
everyone on board the wreckage was
00:03:57
scattered over an area 1,300 feet long
00:03:59
and 130 feet wide almost immediately a
00:04:04
man purporting to represent the
00:04:06
terrorist organization Islamic Jihad
00:04:09
telephoned a US consulate in Algeria to
00:04:11
claim responsibility nevertheless US
00:04:15
army officials who arrived in gander
00:04:17
within hours quickly discounted the
00:04:19
possibility of terrorist involvement
00:04:25
later a Canadian Board of Inquiry stated
00:04:28
that ice on the planes wings had brought
00:04:30
it down however four of the boar's nine
00:04:33
members publicly dissented insisting
00:04:36
that ice did not cause the crash there
00:04:40
was certainly some kind of an explosion
00:04:42
and a small explosion had disabled the
00:04:46
control system that led to the sequence
00:04:49
of events that led to the disaster but
00:04:53
what caused that explosion whether it
00:04:55
for sabotage or whether it was the
00:04:57
accidental detonation of some kind of
00:04:59
military equipment that was carried down
00:05:01
against regulations we really don't have
00:05:04
a better idea than we had in 1988 the
00:05:10
dissenters are particularly disturbed by
00:05:12
the pulverized state of the wreckage
00:05:15
usually in a take-off crash large
00:05:17
sections of the plane remain intact
00:05:19
if any passengers survived a normal kind
00:05:24
of takeoff accident can be quite serious
00:05:26
and can involve the fire but basically
00:05:27
the aircraft isn't completely destroyed
00:05:30
you usually don't have a huge explosion
00:05:33
because when the tanks are full it
00:05:35
doesn't give the fuel a chance to mix
00:05:37
with oxygen like you need for an
00:05:39
explosion
00:05:41
you get an explosion when the aircraft
00:05:43
crashes with partial tanks and takeoff
00:05:46
accidents are usually survivable the US
00:05:51
government claimed there was no evidence
00:05:52
that an onboard explosion had caused the
00:05:55
crash
00:05:55
they steadfastly deny that either
00:05:58
explosives or ammunition had been
00:06:00
carried as carnold eyewitness reports
00:06:03
McEnroe airport however cast doubt on
00:06:06
the government's position the 101st
00:06:08
airborne waited for eight hours while
00:06:10
they were transferred to a larger plane
00:06:12
in the process the duffel bags of 41
00:06:15
soldiers were left behind on the tarmac
00:06:17
to make room for several large wooden
00:06:19
boxes many believe the boxes contain
00:06:23
some type of classified weapons at the
00:06:27
gander crash site one of the rescue
00:06:29
workers Harvey day says he saw five
00:06:31
wooden boxes sir that's as far as you
00:06:35
can go decided to walk down to see what
00:06:37
was in this area I had of a ten feet
00:06:40
from it and this military guy who walked
00:06:43
up towards me he said when I stopped and
00:06:48
looked and I saw what people are
00:06:51
beginning to say it didn't exist I saw
00:06:54
five large wooden boxes they were black
00:06:57
bit burnt from the fire and I saw harms
00:07:00
rifles and I saw things like missiles a
00:07:04
little metal boxes did look like
00:07:06
ammunition boxes and it was our pile of
00:07:10
very neatly into this corner very just
00:07:17
want to see what's desert you don't have
00:07:18
to see anything this is official
00:07:20
military business if you don't leave
00:07:21
I'll have you removed by force from the
00:07:22
premises in addition they recalls one
00:07:26
unusual hot spot resulting from the
00:07:28
crash
00:07:31
there's two firefighters and they had a
00:07:34
continuous stream of water onto this
00:07:36
pile and I thought a very peculiar and I
00:07:39
walked over to one chap and I asked the
00:07:50
Benedicta water way is as flared back up
00:07:51
again and I said we've got to do this he
00:07:54
sent till he said it burns out he said
00:07:56
it cools down tilt it to the point we
00:07:58
can remove what's there within weeks
00:08:01
Harvey Day and several other rescue
00:08:03
workers began to complain of health
00:08:05
problems to some the symptoms sounded
00:08:08
suspiciously like radiation poisoning I
00:08:11
think we had over 30 who describes some
00:08:14
type of malady or sickness as a result
00:08:17
of the crash and they range from liver
00:08:20
problems to what people thought were
00:08:22
heart attacks and just general illnesses
00:08:25
and this is what was checked out and it
00:08:29
got to be rather scary according to one
00:08:32
unnamed source the United States
00:08:34
government allegedly sealed his crash
00:08:36
investigation records for a period of 70
00:08:38
years however several government
00:08:41
agencies including the Department of
00:08:43
Defense the National Transportation
00:08:44
Safety Board deny that any such records
00:08:48
exist
00:08:52
we know that this the files on the
00:08:55
gander incident would not be sealed for
00:08:58
70 years if it were simply ice we know
00:09:02
that there had to be something very very
00:09:05
politically embarrassing that could have
00:09:09
been very harmful to the Reagan
00:09:11
administration that had to be covered up
00:09:14
as one family member put it she wants to
00:09:18
know if her family member died
00:09:21
protecting this country or if he died
00:09:24
because our government was protecting
00:09:27
itself
00:09:29
in the early 1980s the United States
00:09:32
government had begun illegally selling
00:09:34
arms to Iran in a covert and Byzantine
00:09:36
operation now known as iran-contra the
00:09:39
operation ostensibly aimed at freeing
00:09:42
American hostages on the Middle East
00:09:43
through was apparently in jeopardy at
00:09:45
the time of the gander crash the
00:09:47
Security Council I assumed that the
00:09:50
president was just a few days before the
00:09:52
crash Colonel Oliver North Warren in at
00:09:54
least two separate memos that the United
00:09:56
States risked quote a renewed wave of
00:09:59
terrorism a u.s. reversal now could
00:10:02
ignite Iranian fire the hostages would
00:10:05
be our minimum losses whatever happened
00:10:09
in gander I believe would have either
00:10:12
caused political embarrassment or an
00:10:18
international incident or both and
00:10:21
whatever the reason was for the cover-up
00:10:23
in 1985 still exists today
00:10:28
US government investigators did appear
00:10:31
to be behaving strangely first off the
00:10:34
crash site was bulldoze within three
00:10:35
months a highly unusual practice the US
00:10:39
Army says it was done simply to
00:10:41
discourage souvenir hunters secondly the
00:10:45
remains of the plane were quickly
00:10:46
disposed of buried in a dump again
00:10:49
highly unusual procedure as a rule
00:10:52
downed airplanes are virtually
00:10:54
reassembled in order to study the crash
00:10:58
one of the young men who lost his life
00:11:00
at Gander was 23-year old sergeant James
00:11:03
Douglas Phillips the only son of dr.
00:11:06
Douglas Phillips a pathologist
00:11:09
disillusioned by the official reports
00:11:11
dr. Phillips and his wife zona formed an
00:11:13
organization called families for truth
00:11:16
about gander they requested several
00:11:18
scrap sections from the dc-8 and were
00:11:21
surprised when the government sent them
00:11:23
an expert hired to analyze the scraps
00:11:27
claimed the outward puckered edges
00:11:29
showed that a blast had indeed occurred
00:11:31
inside the plane
00:11:33
I think the airplane exploded in midair
00:11:37
and then went down and hit the ground
00:11:41
with a gigantic fireball ensuing upon
00:11:45
hitting and the fuel ignited but there's
00:11:48
no doubt in my mind that there was a
00:11:49
fire or an explosion while the plane was
00:11:53
still in flight
00:11:56
dr. Philips turned up one final chilling
00:11:59
fact autopsies revealed that many of the
00:12:02
dead soldiers at a significant amount of
00:12:04
carbon monoxide in their bodies the
00:12:09
toxicology report showed that the
00:12:11
victims had indeed read in carbon
00:12:16
monoxide prior to the plane hitting the
00:12:19
ground and exploding this had to be from
00:12:23
a detonation a fire or explosion onboard
00:12:28
the craft I guess the thing that bothers
00:12:32
me the most is there are people out
00:12:34
there living ordinarily ordinary day
00:12:38
life going about their business and
00:12:41
their jobs and they know what happened
00:12:45
and they won't tell us and they won't
00:12:47
help us in 1990 a congressional hearing
00:12:53
on the ganda disaster was convened in
00:12:55
Washington DC while the committee did
00:12:58
criticized the government's lackluster
00:12:59
post crash investigation he stopped
00:13:02
short of recommending a full-scale
00:13:03
reinvestigation the families of the dead
00:13:06
men are left to wonder why and how their
00:13:10
sons husbands and brothers really died
00:13:14
next a woman discovers that her
00:13:17
long-lost father was a circus clown with
00:13:20
a broken heart
00:13:21
[Music]
00:13:29
during the Second World War more than 16
00:13:33
million American men and women were
00:13:34
called upon to serve the country
00:13:36
inevitably many families would not
00:13:38
survive the stress of wartime separation
00:13:42
twenty-eight-year-old leaked early lloyd
00:13:45
was one of those whose marriage was a
00:13:47
casualty of the war effort our Curley
00:13:50
was in the service his son and two
00:13:52
daughters lived in Oroville California
00:13:53
with a woman who ran a boarding house
00:13:56
for children at the time Peggy Lloyd was
00:14:03
three years old
00:14:04
her sister 4 and their little brother
00:14:06
Arthur - one day in 1944
00:14:10
Curley's wife arrived at the boarding
00:14:12
house she was accompanied by the man she
00:14:14
would marry when her divorce was final
00:14:17
um I've come here I want to take my
00:14:19
children just the girls are not Arthur
00:14:22
Peggy and her sister went to live with
00:14:25
her mother and the man who was to become
00:14:26
their stepfather
00:14:30
[Music]
00:14:32
Peggy's brother Arthur was left behind
00:14:35
[Music]
00:14:41
PEGI logu up being told that her father
00:14:44
had deserted the family and questions
00:14:46
about her brother were ignored or
00:14:48
brushed aside she began to wonder if
00:14:50
arthur had ever even existed until a
00:14:53
quiet summer day in 1948 I climbed up
00:15:02
into the attic and crawled along kind of
00:15:05
looking at things and in the back was a
00:15:07
bunch of boxes
00:15:10
[Music]
00:15:18
so I was playing this particular group
00:15:21
of boxes and I found this picture
00:15:27
when I looked at the picture I just I
00:15:30
knew that it was Arthur now and I
00:15:33
couldn't say that that was a memory it
00:15:34
was a feeling it was like he looked like
00:15:36
me he was the right age it just felt I
00:15:39
knew that it was Arthur what are you
00:15:50
doing look it's Arthur my brother then
00:15:59
that proves it he's my brother she took
00:16:05
the picture from me and it went away and
00:16:07
I never saw the picture again and I
00:16:09
still never got an answer but of course
00:16:13
in my mind I just knew and so I guess
00:16:15
that I just grew up believing that
00:16:18
wherever my father was Arthur was
00:16:24
Peggy's life at home grew increasingly
00:16:26
difficult at the age of nine she was
00:16:29
sent to the first in a series of foster
00:16:30
homes and boarding schools she married
00:16:33
in 1958 at age 17 and raised four
00:16:36
daughters of her own over the years
00:16:39
Peggy remained in contact with her
00:16:40
mother but never learned anything more
00:16:42
about her brother or father finally in
00:16:50
1983 Peggy presented her mother with a
00:16:52
picture fell genealogical chart as a way
00:16:55
of once again bringing up the subject of
00:16:57
Arthur and curly first one starts with
00:16:59
1879 you look right here look at me I
00:17:04
was an adult now and she didn't have to
00:17:06
be so afraid of what I did and perhaps
00:17:09
she would give you that information and
00:17:11
feel like enough time had passed that
00:17:13
she could do that I forgotten that one
00:17:17
but you know mom there is still
00:17:19
something missing
00:17:20
I still don't have any information about
00:17:23
my own father Peggy don't start with me
00:17:26
again please we just want to know where
00:17:28
he was born mom in the end Peggy's
00:17:30
mother relented and reluctantly revealed
00:17:32
Curly's birthplace Lindsey Oklahoma
00:17:36
thanks the next day I called there on
00:17:42
the phone and I put an ad in their local
00:17:45
weekly newspaper asking if anybody knew
00:17:48
his whereabouts or Arthur's and it was
00:17:52
from there that things began to happen
00:17:55
[Music]
00:18:00
the family secrets of nearly 40 years
00:18:03
were unlocked with stunning speed just
00:18:06
nine days after placing the ad Peggy
00:18:08
received a letter from an aunt
00:18:10
Velma Lloyd who was married to Curly's
00:18:12
brother Velma had included her phone
00:18:15
number and Peggy immediately called her
00:18:18
newly discovered relative hello may I
00:18:24
speak with Velma Roy wait please I found
00:18:29
while I was talking to her on the phone
00:18:31
I was like flipping through the rest of
00:18:33
the letters and there I saw this one
00:18:36
that had him when those return address
00:18:38
stamps on it that said curly and cue
00:18:41
clown alley Spokane when I saw the
00:18:48
letter from my dad it's like I felt like
00:18:53
my heart stopped it was a mixture is
00:18:55
like I was really excited I'm really
00:18:58
emotional I started crying but I was
00:19:02
really frightened I didn't know anything
00:19:05
about my father I thought well what if
00:19:08
what he says in the letter is I don't
00:19:09
want anything to do with you but of
00:19:11
course I just overcame that in and I
00:19:15
opened the letter and the letter said my
00:19:17
beloved daughter how thrilled I am to
00:19:20
hear from you it was like it's
00:19:25
undescribable Peggy was surprised to
00:19:28
learn that for many years both before
00:19:30
and after the war her father was a clown
00:19:33
with Ringling Brothers and other smaller
00:19:34
circuses in 1955 curly had even
00:19:38
performed within five miles of Peggy's
00:19:40
home in Southern California but they
00:19:43
would not see each other until Peggy's
00:19:44
43rd birthday in 1984 this home video
00:19:51
was shot at Peggy and curlies
00:19:53
long-awaited reunion
00:19:54
the Spokane Washington it was the first
00:19:57
birthday Peggy had spent with her father
00:19:59
since she was three years old suddenly I
00:20:04
had a grandfather and aunts and uncles
00:20:07
and cousins and just this whole world of
00:20:10
family
00:20:11
and they just all acted like I'd been
00:20:13
there my whole life like they'd always
00:20:15
spend my family yeah it's just a
00:20:18
wonderful thing the celebration was
00:20:22
perfect in every way but one Peggy's
00:20:24
brother Arthur was not with the family
00:20:27
but finally Peggy was able to learn what
00:20:30
had happened to Arthur since she last
00:20:32
saw him in 1944
00:20:38
for four years Arthur had traveled with
00:20:40
a circus watching his father perform in
00:20:43
towns and cities across America Curley
00:20:46
had no idea where his ex-wife and his
00:20:48
two daughters were living hey prissy
00:21:03
monkey you real good in the show today
00:21:07
at first Curley believed that circus
00:21:10
life would be rewarding for his young
00:21:11
son Curley himself that joined the
00:21:14
circus when he was nine and saw nothing
00:21:16
wrong with her itinerant life his
00:21:18
friends advised him otherwise the circus
00:21:24
people told him that Arthur needed to be
00:21:26
in school Arthur needed a home
00:21:29
stability real parents and a family that
00:21:33
he could grow up with in one place and
00:21:35
that the circus life wasn't a good home
00:21:37
for him yes after much soul-searching
00:21:45
Curley reached a painful decision he
00:21:48
sought out a Catholic priest in Logan
00:21:50
Utah where the circus was performing in
00:21:53
the fall of 1948 Church can find him a
00:21:57
home
00:21:58
I appreciate take care of yourself okay
00:22:02
thank you Father
00:22:04
thank you buddy your son Arthur
00:22:09
[Music]
00:22:15
hey I want you to carry yourself okay
00:22:18
all right and uh this man here he's
00:22:22
gonna take care of you'd be good
00:22:23
remember everything daddy told you okay
00:22:25
all right
00:22:30
your long
00:22:32
[Music]
00:22:39
artha was six years old when curly gave
00:22:42
him up for adoption fifteen years later
00:22:45
curly would receive two letters from his
00:22:47
son but neither contained Arthur's
00:22:49
adopted last name or his return address
00:22:51
the letters have been mailed from
00:22:54
Colorado Springs Colorado
00:22:56
I tried Colorado Springs I didn't find
00:23:01
anything there I seem to be at a loss
00:23:04
and when my dad became really ill it was
00:23:09
like I have to find Arthur I have to
00:23:11
find him before he dies look at you just
00:23:17
a mess just a mess curly and I had seven
00:23:25
really wonderful years of friendship
00:23:30
yeah we became really good friends and
00:23:32
we talked about Arthur a lot he really
00:23:36
felt really sad about it and he felt
00:23:38
really guilty about it only got one
00:23:41
worker we have wonderful daughter
00:23:49
I will find him sorry
00:23:59
it was like he said to me Peggy I don't
00:24:03
know about Arthur
00:24:05
I'm so sorry about Arthur but I know
00:24:08
that you'll find him somehow I believe
00:24:13
that I know that we will
00:24:19
leak early lloyd died in 1991 at the age
00:24:22
of 77 he was comforted at least in some
00:24:26
measure by Peggy's promise to continue
00:24:28
searching for Arthur this is one of only
00:24:32
two known photographs of Arthur Franklin
00:24:34
Lloyd when the picture was taken
00:24:37
Arthur was 2 years old that blond hair
00:24:39
yes blue eyes would today be 50 years
00:24:42
old I have to find Arthur I have to find
00:24:47
him to say you have a family you have
00:24:49
someone not just myself but all of
00:24:52
Curly's family who love you and want you
00:24:55
and we want to know you
00:24:59
but we returned a young woman accuses a
00:25:03
spiritual leader of rape authorities
00:25:05
need your help to find him Tim this is
00:25:26
Julie what are you doing it's late
00:25:32
shortly before midnight on September
00:25:34
17th 1992 a young woman named Julie
00:25:38
Cooper made an impassioned phone call a
00:25:40
cry for help - Tim Santee a virtual
00:25:44
stranger whom she had met only once when
00:25:46
he repaired the satellite dish on the
00:25:48
farm where she lived Julia told me bits
00:25:54
and pieces of what had gone on but I'm
00:25:57
still not aware of the whole story and
00:26:00
I'm thinking well you know it's no big
00:26:01
deal nobody's gonna catch us we
00:26:04
tentatively set the time for 1:15 in the
00:26:06
morning I drove up to the corner before
00:26:10
you get to the road down to her house at
00:26:12
1:13 I waited for two minutes and drove
00:26:15
down there and she was crouched down in
00:26:19
the grass with a trash bag full of
00:26:22
clothes
00:26:25
oh she was very very nervous and very
00:26:29
afraid that you are the wearers of way
00:26:33
Julie Cooper told Tim sandy that for 16
00:26:37
years she'd been trapped in a religious
00:26:38
cult called the de Cloud family the
00:26:41
family nearly 30 men women and children
00:26:43
lived together in a compound far removed
00:26:46
from the outside world in some ways that
00:26:50
account family resembled the Branch
00:26:52
Davidian sect the religious caught led
00:26:54
by David Koresh and Waco Texas that
00:26:57
group lived in a fortified compound
00:26:59
where a two-month standoff with federal
00:27:01
agents recently ended in tragedy David
00:27:06
Koresh's group was just one of an
00:27:08
estimated 2,000 religious cults which
00:27:10
have sprung up throughout the country
00:27:12
many are headed by self-proclaimed
00:27:14
Messiah who with absolute authority on
00:27:18
Julie Cooper finally escaped from under
00:27:20
cloud family she began to make
00:27:22
accusations which paint a horrifying
00:27:24
picture of life within the commune the
00:27:26
most chilling allegations focus on the
00:27:28
leader of the cult Nelson de Cloud
00:27:33
Nelson de Cloud is an ex-police officer
00:27:36
from Raytown Missouri a suburb of Kansas
00:27:38
City his family as he calls his
00:27:41
followers had actually been founded by
00:27:44
his father Forrest a cloud around 1968
00:27:47
before Forrest died in 1988 Nelson
00:27:51
ascended to the role of spiritual leader
00:27:54
so new Buddhist followers to an isolated
00:27:57
farm in Liberty Missouri nearly all
00:27:59
family members were encouraged to change
00:28:02
their last names to the cloud literally
00:28:04
of the clouds and welcomed him into the
00:28:12
temple to class praise the Lord praise
00:28:16
the Lord
00:28:19
today's lesson from revelations 13 open
00:28:24
your Bibles please Nelson thought that
00:28:27
he was God son not really that he was
00:28:32
Jesus Christ but that he was one of
00:28:34
God's sons and that he couldn't do any
00:28:37
wrong
00:28:37
and I said unto him Sir Nelson had a
00:28:41
very booming voice his eyes were like
00:28:43
these are they which came white blue
00:28:46
ting with legislation and that scary
00:28:48
robes and made them white in the blood
00:28:50
of the Lamb praise the Lord
00:28:54
[Applause]
00:28:57
Julie Cooper was just 6 when her family
00:28:59
joined the cult in the mid 70s who
00:29:04
claims she eventually learned that the
00:29:06
cloud expected perverse almost repulsive
00:29:08
forms of devotion from his followers
00:29:10
holiday when she was 10 Julie says the
00:29:14
cloud forced her to watch him have sex
00:29:16
with a female member of the family he
00:29:24
asked me to have sex with him and I
00:29:26
didn't want to I didn't what I want you
00:29:28
to do Julie and what God wants you to do
00:29:30
you understand me all right I guess he
00:29:33
was so far in didn't he couldn't do any
00:29:35
wrong kind of deal it didn't matter to
00:29:39
him now you listen to me do you know how
00:29:41
old Mary was when she had Jesus 14 years
00:29:45
old 14 years old now you think about
00:29:47
that there's nothing wrong with that if
00:29:50
you put me out just like wooded area I
00:29:52
didn't have any food and jacket or
00:29:55
anything like that I'll know when to
00:29:59
come back God will tell me when to come
00:30:01
back
00:30:04
according to Julie she stood in the
00:30:06
field alone and shivering for eight
00:30:09
hours before Nelson took her back to the
00:30:11
compound this obedience
00:30:15
there is a sinner amongst us and I am
00:30:20
deeply troubled Judy says that another
00:30:24
member of the family was publicly
00:30:26
humiliated the clown about his coolies
00:30:29
disobey my words she has chosen to
00:30:32
disobey God's he was gonna make an
00:30:37
example of her in front of me in front
00:30:39
of others College penance that's enough
00:30:43
to scare and he knew that I was already
00:30:44
scared ourselves I felt like it was my
00:30:51
fault because here she tried to stand up
00:30:56
for me and I wasn't giving in and maybe
00:31:02
if I had given in earlier he would have
00:31:04
done this
00:31:08
they found me you know and he says well
00:31:13
are you ready now but of course you know
00:31:16
after all that had happened I said yes
00:31:21
Julie Cooper claims she became a virtual
00:31:23
prisoner in the compound forced to serve
00:31:26
as one of the clouds unwilling sex
00:31:28
partners when she was 15
00:31:31
Judy says she made her first attempt to
00:31:33
escape after everything had happened to
00:31:36
me everything was going on I decided to
00:31:39
run away you know I just couldn't take
00:31:40
any more Judy's absence did not go
00:31:45
unnoticed Nelson the cloud immediately
00:31:47
organized search parties to comb the
00:31:49
area
00:31:54
Julian stop right where you are you hear
00:31:57
me boy you stay right there stop right
00:31:59
there pick me up handcuffed me and took
00:32:16
me back I was just scared of him of what
00:32:20
would happen to me
00:32:21
[Music]
00:32:32
according to Judy she was ordered to
00:32:35
disrobe and later she was severely
00:32:38
beaten offer your shirt
00:32:45
Nelson switched me burn my clothes from
00:32:49
my shoes and it was like a symbolic
00:32:53
thing after that he always kept me with
00:32:57
him I always had to sleep with him and
00:32:59
his in his bus in his area he wouldn't
00:33:03
let me out of anybody's sight I always
00:33:06
had to be watched so that's one thing
00:33:10
that really kept me on edge you know and
00:33:12
kept me from ever trying to run away cuz
00:33:14
I was afraid someone would see me seven
00:33:18
more years past Julie Cooper remain
00:33:22
feeling stripped of her freedom and
00:33:23
dignity waiting for one more chance to
00:33:26
escape then in the fall of 1992 the
00:33:29
opportunity arose at Nelson's request
00:33:33
Judy contacted a satellite dish
00:33:35
repairman numerous calls followed until
00:33:38
finally Tim santi made his appearance at
00:33:41
the de cloud commune as I pull into the
00:33:45
driveway I see several cars I see a lot
00:33:48
of kids running around and the first
00:33:49
impression that I get is it you know
00:33:51
this has to be some type of sister Julie
00:33:56
could I interrupt you just a second this
00:33:58
is Tim he's the man from the satellite
00:34:01
company when I got into the office I
00:34:03
guess I sort of more or less recognized
00:34:05
Julie's because I had built up a rapport
00:34:07
with her on the telephone and in the
00:34:09
weeks preceding to me coming up there
00:34:10
and doing the service call Julie was
00:34:16
very meek in as much as she wasn't as
00:34:19
outgoing as she was on the phone that
00:34:21
she seemed stifled or held back because
00:34:24
of some some other reason than than
00:34:27
anything obvious brother Nelson this is
00:34:31
our brother in god Nelson declawed
00:34:33
Nelson I'd like for you to meet Tim when
00:34:37
Tim was introduced to Nelson she didn't
00:34:41
show him in a respect he didn't think of
00:34:43
her as anything or anything and that
00:34:47
made me feel good it made me feel like I
00:34:50
could trust in someone I could actually
00:34:51
talk to this person and he could
00:34:53
understand me over the next couple of
00:34:56
weeks afterward
00:34:58
I had asked her out for a date and she
00:35:01
had seemed like she was willing but was
00:35:03
not that there was something that was
00:35:06
holding her back well he had asked me
00:35:08
out and of course I told him that I
00:35:10
couldn't go and I couldn't go for a year
00:35:12
you know wouldn't be able to get out for
00:35:13
a year that was just the way of putting
00:35:15
him off and seeing if he was willing to
00:35:17
go on with trying to wear me down
00:35:20
in the course of our conversations on
00:35:22
the phone we had she had come up with a
00:35:25
plan that she had that she would need to
00:35:26
sneak out at night undetected I called
00:35:31
him up missed' I'm gonna go tonight well
00:35:34
he made a time in 1:15 in the morning
00:35:36
you know sure enough 1:15 hit he was
00:35:39
there after I left I was afraid they
00:35:47
would take me back
00:35:49
it would beat me do something to my mom
00:35:55
I'm still afraid that he is torturing my
00:35:58
mom in some way for what I've done
00:36:02
at dawn nelson de cloud went looking for
00:36:05
julie allegedly masquerading as police
00:36:09
officers Nelson and another family
00:36:11
member drove to Tim Sandy's address hey
00:36:17
Julie where is Julie
00:36:22
[Music]
00:36:24
fortunately for Jude the address
00:36:26
belonged to Tim's brother 10 Tim and
00:36:29
Judy just a few yards away sound asleep
00:36:32
in the house next door the next day Ted
00:36:50
came up to me and said what the hell's
00:36:51
going on here
00:36:52
two strange people had come into his
00:36:55
home looking for me like I you know like
00:36:59
I was a criminal or something and that's
00:37:04
when Julie had told us the whole thing
00:37:06
of what was going on why did you want to
00:37:09
run away she had also alluded to the
00:37:12
fear that any man that was physically
00:37:14
able from that group would probably come
00:37:16
and try to get hurt and they raped me
00:37:19
and I can't stay there anymore how long
00:37:23
that's when we decided to put
00:37:25
restraining orders against anyone who
00:37:26
was physically able to abduct her I
00:37:30
never want to go back ever when you
00:37:36
first get out you feel kind of you don't
00:37:38
know what you are to do you know how to
00:37:40
stop things and that was just the first
00:37:43
step for me just to keep him away
00:37:45
because I knew they had brought people
00:37:48
back before they had gone away and beat
00:37:51
them and stuff and I was afraid
00:37:52
something like that would happen to me
00:37:54
last Thursday I called my friend Tim to
00:37:58
come pick me up detective Duane Wiersma
00:38:02
of the Clay County Sheriff's Department
00:38:04
had long been suspicious about the cult
00:38:06
please what happened when he brought
00:38:10
Julie Cooper in for questioning she
00:38:13
provided a detailed and harrowing
00:38:14
account of her entire childhood I was
00:38:18
abused
00:38:19
I believed Julie from the beginning
00:38:23
beautiful protective B's we had a hard
00:38:28
time trying just to focus on the charges
00:38:30
that of a rape at the time because
00:38:32
there's so many other things that could
00:38:33
have been he could been charged with
00:38:37
before an arrest warrant could be issued
00:38:39
Nelson declawed ordered the women and
00:38:41
children to load their possessions out
00:38:43
of four converted busses Nelson then
00:38:46
took them away from the condo the other
00:38:48
men departed a week later the cloud
00:38:51
family has not been seen since it's not
00:38:56
an everyday occurrence where you up on a
00:38:57
religious group led by such a powerful
00:39:00
individual as Nelson to cloud we believe
00:39:05
they're still together because Nelson
00:39:06
feeds off the power of being in control
00:39:08
of a group if he doesn't have the group
00:39:10
then he has no power I want Nelson to
00:39:13
get caught because it's not fair to
00:39:16
anyone else that's up there my mom and
00:39:20
dad they they need to know that he isn't
00:39:25
the Messiah
00:39:28
you can't do things on his own and think
00:39:30
he could get away with it he's not above
00:39:34
that there's a criminal what he was
00:39:40
doing was wrong
00:39:40
[Music]
00:39:46
after our broadcast several viewers
00:39:48
Masson Angelo Texas a small town 500
00:39:51
miles from the clouds old headquarters
00:39:53
in Missouri call to say they had seemed
00:39:55
to clouds wife in the area the coat had
00:39:58
apparently settled in this farmhouse
00:40:00
when state and local agents converged on
00:40:03
the scene the cloud kicked out the
00:40:05
screen of the upstairs window in an
00:40:07
attempt to escape the deputies
00:40:09
approached him and he tried to wrestle
00:40:12
with a few of them briefly there are so
00:40:14
many law enforcement officers though
00:40:15
that he didn't that didn't last very
00:40:17
long they put the handcuffs on him and
00:40:19
escorted him out of the building
00:40:22
Nelson declared was booked at the local
00:40:24
County Jail and later extradited to
00:40:26
Liberty Missouri to stand trial on for
00:40:29
criminal counts including forcible rape
00:40:31
and sodomy since they rested Nelson the
00:40:34
cloud other former members of the group
00:40:37
have come forward willing to testify
00:40:39
about things they witnessed when they
00:40:42
were members of the group no Santa Cloud
00:40:45
is currently out on bail
00:40:47
thanks to twenty five thousand dollars
00:40:48
raised by followers a trial is scheduled
00:40:51
for November 16th 1993 if convicted on
00:40:55
all charges Nelson the cloud could spend
00:40:57
the rest of his life in prison I feel
00:41:00
confident now that I can have a normal
00:41:02
life after seeing him caught knowing
00:41:06
that it can be done
00:41:10
for Julie Cooper her long ordeal is
00:41:13
almost but not quite over she still has
00:41:16
to testify the clouds upcoming trial
00:41:19
however this courageous young woman has
00:41:21
already found a happy ending to her
00:41:23
story
00:41:24
last summer Julie became engaged to Tim
00:41:26
sandy a man who helped her escape

00:41:41
next a dramatic reunion a woman finds a
00:41:45
long-lost best friend who helped her
00:41:47
overcome the trauma of polio recently we
00:42:00
featured the moving story of Judy Davis
00:42:02
he was stricken with polio as a young
00:42:04
girl Judy was searching for her best
00:42:07
childhood friend Becky Terry the two
00:42:12
girls had been wrenched apart back in
00:42:14
1958 when Becky's family moved away Judy
00:42:19
and Becky had met on the first day of
00:42:21
junior high to the other students Judy
00:42:26
her braces and crutches was an unnerving
00:42:28
sight she was often the object of
00:42:30
curious stares but one girl was
00:42:33
different one girl offered Judy the
00:42:36
precious gift of unconditional
00:42:37
friendship
00:42:38
[Music]
00:42:47
Becky's friendship to me meant that I
00:42:50
was able to be accepted by the other
00:42:54
students in the school and it made me
00:42:58
feel like I was more like everyone else
00:43:01
and that there was no difference between
00:43:04
us and at the age of 12 that meant a lot
00:43:09
and it still means a lot during our
00:43:15
special live broadcast last winter Judy
00:43:17
waited anxiously at her home in Tucson
00:43:19
Arizona hoping that Becky would be found
00:43:22
- everyone's joy they were reunited by
00:43:25
phone while the program was still on the
00:43:27
air
00:43:28
[Music]
00:43:34
three months later Becky and her husband
00:43:37
flew from their home in West Virginia to
00:43:39
meet Judy and Tucson if he hadn't
00:43:46
stopped jumped out anyway hosting their
00:43:50
sickening that yard I couldn't like this
00:43:51
leader finding Becky and telling her
00:44:00
what off what she meant to me was really
00:44:03
important and I didn't want life to end
00:44:06
without being able to tell her that she
00:44:10
hasn't changed that much maybe we're a
00:44:12
little fat or you know but we love it
00:44:15
good friends yeah that's the one thing I
00:44:19
always loved about Becky she accepted me
00:44:20
for the way I was and I still feel that
00:44:23
way
00:44:26
happily Judy and Becky's reunion had
00:44:29
none expected PostScript as girls in
00:44:32
junior high school they shared a very
00:44:33
special friend his name was David major
00:44:37
David had first been Becky's boyfriend
00:44:39
and later on Judy's during our live
00:44:42
broadcast David contacted our telecenter
00:44:44
and left his phone number on the day of
00:44:47
their reunion Judy and Becky just had to
00:44:49
call him back now the circle was at last
00:45:33
complete so the two girls who taught
00:45:36
David major how to kiss took their
00:45:38
husbands out to celebrate the renewal of
00:45:40
a very special friendship a toast to old
00:45:44
friends and new ones yeah
