Forensic Files - Season 6, Episode 9 - Soft Touch - Full Episode

November 18, 2021 / 22:35

This episode covers the murder of 22-year-old Dawn Bruce in Richmond, Virginia, and the forensic investigation that led to her killer's capture.

Dawn Bruce, a Virginia Commonwealth University student and musician, was found dead in her apartment on December 19, 1990. The medical examiner determined she had been raped, stabbed, and bled to death. Investigators discovered that the killer entered through a pried window, but no fingerprints or evidence were found initially.

As the investigation progressed, detectives focused on a neighbor, Robert Knight, who had a history of drug-related offenses. Although he had an alibi, inconsistencies in his story raised suspicions. A faint fingerprint on a pillowcase at the crime scene became a crucial piece of evidence.

Using new image enhancement technology, forensic experts were able to identify the fingerprint as belonging to Knight. Further evidence, including a hunting knife found in his apartment, linked him to the murder. Knight eventually pled guilty to avoid the death penalty and received four life sentences.

The episode highlights the role of forensic science in solving the case, emphasizing how crucial the fingerprint evidence was in securing a conviction.

TL;DR

Forensic technology helped solve the brutal murder of Dawn Bruce, leading to the conviction of her neighbor Robert Knight.

dawn was a musician she joined the vcu

00:01:35
through auditions
00:01:38
that's what kept her there for as long
00:01:40
as she was there but dawn was anxious to
00:01:43
find out what was out in the real world
00:01:46
and how she could do and what she could
00:01:48
do
00:01:49
after college dawn worked as a phone
00:01:51
operator by day and a waitress by night
00:01:55
despite the long hours she enjoyed the
00:01:58
freedom of living on her own
00:02:01
dawn was a fun-loving kind of person
00:02:05
thought she could do anything and
00:02:08
everything and
00:02:09
and didn't care what other people said
00:02:12
about
00:02:13
her trying to to do things that weren't
00:02:16
the norm
00:02:18
on december 19 1990
00:02:21
dawn's mother went to her daughter's
00:02:23
apartment since she hadn't heard from
00:02:25
her in a few days
00:02:28
she found dawn
00:02:30
in a pool of blood
00:02:33
the medical examiner found evidence she
00:02:35
had been raped sodomized and stabbed in
00:02:39
the heart
00:02:42
the knife was was rammed in her heart
00:02:45
and
00:02:46
the subject held dawn down
00:02:49
until she bled to death which
00:02:51
from what i understand could have been
00:02:52
eight to ten minutes or longer
00:02:54
and she was defiled as in the process of
00:02:57
this
00:02:58
uh i don't know how much vile violence
00:03:00
is needed but that's only my opinion i
00:03:02
think it was a very very bad case
00:03:06
first impression i had was what a
00:03:08
horrible horrible crime
00:03:10
and and what somebody had done to really
00:03:13
an innocent young lady who
00:03:15
who absolutely didn't deserve what
00:03:17
happened to her in any sense of the word
00:03:19
it was a young 22 year old female who
00:03:22
was working minding her own business had
00:03:25
a future ahead of her
00:03:27
had had children ahead of her marriage
00:03:29
everything that we all
00:03:31
enjoy
00:03:32
and she was brutally attacked while she
00:03:35
was sleeping
00:03:37
investigators discovered that the killer
00:03:39
entered the apartment through a window
00:03:42
which had been pried open
00:03:44
but there was no evidence of burglary
00:03:46
nothing had been disturbed or broken
00:03:50
they found no foreign fingerprints
00:03:51
inside the apartment
00:03:53
when i left there i i didn't have very
00:03:56
good feelings at all because
00:03:58
i think everything that i carried out
00:04:00
there out of the scene was in one large
00:04:03
bag and that consisted mostly of the
00:04:06
items on the bed the bed sheets and the
00:04:08
pullers and
00:04:11
the blankets and so forth
00:04:13
dawn bruce was last seen at tommy's
00:04:15
restaurant two nights earlier where she
00:04:17
worked the night shift as a waitress
00:04:21
dawn met many people through her job
00:04:24
which only added to the large pool of
00:04:26
potential suspects
00:04:30
investigators tom tiller and jim dorton
00:04:33
interviewed dawn's neighbors in the
00:04:35
apartment complex
00:04:38
several neighbors were suspicious right
00:04:40
from the start a subject who lived
00:04:43
directly beside victim
00:04:46
was on active parole
00:04:48
and he was
00:04:49
on parole for burglary and attempted
00:04:52
rape while armed with a knife
00:04:54
so uh immediately we felt that he was a
00:04:57
good suspect
00:04:59
there was very little evidence and
00:05:00
there's one of these cases that when you
00:05:02
left there that
00:05:04
you just thought well this is going to
00:05:06
be a hard one to
00:05:07
to clear because of the lack of evidence
00:05:09
[Music]
00:05:11
with no murder weapon no witnesses and
00:05:14
few leads
00:05:15
it was going to be a difficult
00:05:17
investigation
00:05:18
[Music]
00:05:25
she wanted to be a firefighter
00:05:28
and she had passed her firefighter one
00:05:30
and two and was volunteering as a
00:05:33
firefighter
00:05:34
so don was
00:05:36
was just a happy person
00:05:40
don wanted as much out of life as she
00:05:43
could get into every minute of it
00:05:47
she at some point in time would have had
00:05:49
a family wanted children
00:05:54
but that was not to be
00:05:58
shortly after the rape and murder of 22
00:06:00
year old dawn bruce
00:06:02
john alderman was assigned to prosecute
00:06:04
the case when you get a crime like this
00:06:07
that really violates
00:06:09
a person
00:06:11
you get a sense of indignation that
00:06:12
that's impossible to escape
00:06:15
a sense of indignation that
00:06:17
someone being used and abused
00:06:21
like that
00:06:23
investigators began focusing their
00:06:25
attention on the few bits of physical
00:06:27
evidence they had
00:06:31
forensic experts discovered that the
00:06:34
fatal injury was a single stab wound in
00:06:37
the heart
00:06:40
in the forensics lab
00:06:41
scientists found two linear impressions
00:06:44
on the pillowcase that were consistent
00:06:46
with the blade of a knife
00:06:49
the serrated edges appeared to be those
00:06:51
of a hunting knife
00:06:55
also on the pillowcase
00:06:57
they found what appeared to be
00:06:59
a partial fingerprint in dawn's blood
00:07:03
but the fabric was textured which made
00:07:06
any kind of fingerprint analysis
00:07:09
impossible
00:07:10
the print
00:07:12
was almost invisible
00:07:15
even to a trained eye the ridge detail
00:07:17
was very faint and we had to really
00:07:19
study it because as we studied it under
00:07:23
magnification you enlarged the fabric
00:07:25
weave which
00:07:26
had a tendency to
00:07:28
totally eradicate the rich detail so at
00:07:31
that point in time i did not have a
00:07:33
whole lot of hope for that fingerprint
00:07:36
there was rich detail on the print but
00:07:39
in my opinion at the time i didn't think
00:07:41
it was very much
00:07:43
i knew if that's all that we would ever
00:07:44
have and it could not be
00:07:48
enhanced in any way then we wouldn't
00:07:50
have much of a case unless we got a lot
00:07:52
more evidence coming in that we didn't
00:07:53
think we would get
00:07:56
traces of semen also were found at the
00:07:58
scene
00:08:00
serology tests indicated the killer had
00:08:02
type a blood
00:08:05
this eliminated dawn's boyfriend as well
00:08:08
as dawn's neighbor who was on parole for
00:08:10
rape and burglary
00:08:13
dawn had another neighbor
00:08:15
robert knight
00:08:17
who had some prior arrest for drug
00:08:19
possession
00:08:20
robert knight had made comments to the
00:08:23
victim
00:08:24
as she was outside washing her car or
00:08:26
going to and from her automobile to her
00:08:28
apartment this subject would make
00:08:31
comments to her in a
00:08:32
sexual suggestive nature
00:08:34
and
00:08:36
he became a suspect
00:08:38
robert knight had type a blood
00:08:40
consistent with the semen sample from
00:08:43
the crime scene
00:08:45
but he had an alibi for the night of the
00:08:47
murder
00:08:48
he said he was with his girlfriend at
00:08:50
the time
00:08:52
and the fingerprint on the pillowcase
00:08:54
did not appear to match the fingerprints
00:08:57
on file for robert knight
00:08:59
we tried traditional photography
00:09:02
everything that we knew at that point in
00:09:04
time also to develop some contrast
00:09:06
between the ridges and the fabric
00:09:08
but basically those techniques were not
00:09:10
satisfactory at that point in time we
00:09:13
couldn't get it to a point where we felt
00:09:15
like we had an identifiable print
00:09:18
scientists tried various chemical
00:09:21
processes to improve the print on the
00:09:23
pillowcase
00:09:24
but every time they enhanced it
00:09:27
they also enhanced the threads of the
00:09:29
pillowcase
00:09:32
investigators were no closer to
00:09:34
identifying the print on the pillowcase
00:09:37
than they were the day after the murder
00:09:40
the fingerprint was something that we
00:09:42
knew we had
00:09:44
clearly was observed it clearly was seen
00:09:46
but
00:09:47
no one knew what to do with it because
00:09:49
it was in a medium
00:09:51
in blood on a medium on a pillow case
00:09:54
against a pattern of the pillow case
00:09:56
that made it unreadable
00:09:59
and if there was some way to make that
00:10:00
print readable it could take on
00:10:03
as vibrant a forensic
00:10:07
persuader as dna evidence and maybe some
00:10:09
more
00:10:12
then investigators got a break
00:10:16
every year we have a late and print
00:10:17
conference which encompasses all the
00:10:19
late and print examiners in virginia
00:10:21
it's a training seminar basically and
00:10:24
the imaging people there one of the
00:10:26
vendors brought their imaging system
00:10:28
there i was highly skeptical of it had
00:10:31
never seen it used in a
00:10:34
forensic case but since we had nothing
00:10:36
else other than this very faint print on
00:10:39
fabric we thought it was worth a try
00:10:42
the new system was called image
00:10:45
enhancement technology
00:10:48
image enhancement uses a computer to
00:10:50
identify patterns like those woven into
00:10:53
the pillowcase
00:10:55
once the pattern was identified it was
00:10:57
subtracted from the image leaving only
00:11:00
the ridge patterns of the fingerprint
00:11:03
behind
00:11:06
after 10 hours of testing
00:11:09
the fabric pattern was subtracted
00:11:12
and what began to emerge
00:11:14
was a partial thumbprint of the killer
00:11:19
[Music]
00:11:23
investigators knew that they had to
00:11:26
identify the fingerprint on the
00:11:28
pillowcase in order to solve
00:11:31
dawn bruce's murder
00:11:33
the primary suspect in this case was one
00:11:36
of dawn's neighbors robert knight who
00:11:39
had a history of drug abuse
00:11:41
knight said he had an alibi that he was
00:11:44
with his girlfriend on the night of the
00:11:45
murder
00:11:46
but his girlfriend said
00:11:48
knight wasn't with her for the entire
00:11:51
evening
00:11:52
the evidence indicated the crime
00:11:53
occurred about between three and four
00:11:55
roughly that saturday morning he claimed
00:11:58
to be with his girlfriend all night but
00:12:00
his girlfriend said no he was not with
00:12:02
me for about that period of time between
00:12:04
three and four
00:12:05
the fingerprints on file for robert
00:12:07
knight did not have enough ridge detail
00:12:10
to determine if they matched the print
00:12:12
on the pillowcase
00:12:15
knight voluntarily gave a second set of
00:12:18
prints but again there was not enough
00:12:20
ridge detail to make a comparison
00:12:24
each time that we would would show our
00:12:26
presence around him he got a little bit
00:12:28
more uh stand standoffish and
00:12:31
not as cooperative and accused of
00:12:33
accused us of harassing him and
00:12:36
he just he's changed entirely his
00:12:38
personality and his uh
00:12:41
willingness to help he he did not want
00:12:43
us to come around anymore
00:12:46
now the prosecution was in a difficult
00:12:48
position
00:12:50
if they could not identify the
00:12:52
fingerprint as nights
00:12:54
the defense attorney would use that
00:12:56
against the prosecution at a trial
00:12:59
the defense attorneys would have said
00:13:00
whose fingerprint is it we don't know
00:13:02
we'll never know and that fingerprint is
00:13:04
a killer and it's not his fingerprint or
00:13:06
it can't be proved to be his fingerprint
00:13:08
so in our line of work you really need
00:13:10
to answer all the questions and if you
00:13:12
don't
00:13:13
the defense attorney asked those
00:13:14
questions at closing arguments
00:13:17
but prosecutors gambled they arrested
00:13:20
knight for dawn's murder
00:13:22
pinning their hopes on the new
00:13:24
fingerprint technology and the
00:13:27
scientists ability to match knight's
00:13:29
fingerprints
00:13:32
after night's arrest
00:13:33
norm tiller kept a close eye on the
00:13:35
technique police used to fingerprint him
00:13:38
making certain that each finger was
00:13:41
carefully rolled from nail to nail for
00:13:44
the clearest set of prints possible as
00:13:48
soon as i
00:13:49
saw a good suitable roll print
00:13:53
i took that straight back to my office
00:13:55
and began that examination
00:13:57
but tiller did not rush to judgment he
00:14:00
took his time after one month of
00:14:03
analysis and retesting
00:14:05
norm tiller found
00:14:07
what he was looking for
00:14:10
the print on the pillowcase
00:14:12
was a left thumb print
00:14:15
matched the outside of robert knight's
00:14:18
left thumb
00:14:20
i spent additional time doing comparison
00:14:23
work and just analyzing the print from
00:14:25
every angle so to speak before we
00:14:28
actually affected the identification and
00:14:31
even then i had another
00:14:33
examiner go behind me and take a look at
00:14:36
everything that i had done to make sure
00:14:38
there were no errors made in the process
00:14:41
but there was one more hurdle the image
00:14:44
enhancement technology was so new
00:14:47
it had never been accepted as evidence
00:14:49
in court
00:14:51
i was concerned at that point in time
00:14:54
that the evidence may not be accepted
00:14:58
within the scientific community
00:15:00
as a good science this was the first
00:15:03
time that anybody had used it take it
00:15:05
into court
00:15:06
into a courtroom where it was going to
00:15:07
be actually challenged
00:15:11
and it was going to be fought
00:15:13
a hearing was held to determine whether
00:15:16
forensic evidence from this new
00:15:18
fingerprinting technology should be
00:15:20
admitted
00:15:21
the defense argued that it was
00:15:23
hocus-pocus technology which manipulated
00:15:26
and changed the image of the fingerprint
00:15:30
pam ringer was the expert who testified
00:15:32
for the prosecution explaining that the
00:15:35
human eye can distinguish between 16 and
00:15:39
32 shades of grey
00:15:41
but a computer can distinguish
00:15:44
256 shades
00:15:48
ringer said the image enhancement
00:15:50
technology simply eliminated the fabric
00:15:53
patterns
00:15:54
then made the dark areas of the
00:15:57
fingerprint darker and the light areas
00:16:00
between the ridges lighter
00:16:02
if somebody as dumb as i am can
00:16:04
understand this when i got done with her
00:16:06
over the course of a day
00:16:08
and doing some studying afterwards
00:16:11
i think the explanation becomes one that
00:16:13
anyone can understand this imaging
00:16:15
enhancing doesn't change the
00:16:18
the data at all what we had was a
00:16:20
photograph of the fingerprint and
00:16:23
pam ringer said i went ahead and did it
00:16:24
that day
00:16:26
on march the 27th i could do it again
00:16:28
today i can show you i can replicate it
00:16:29
100 times if i need to she did it in
00:16:31
stages she took the the first the
00:16:34
pattern out then she took the weave out
00:16:36
and as you watch it you can see the
00:16:38
print didn't change the print didn't
00:16:39
move the lines of of the lands and
00:16:42
grooves of the the print didn't change
00:16:44
at all and i think that graphically was
00:16:47
the best persuader for for judge culp in
00:16:50
the case
00:16:52
the judge was convinced he did not
00:16:55
believe
00:16:56
that the computer enhancements altered
00:16:58
the bloody fingerprint
00:17:01
a legal precedent had been set
00:17:04
but prosecutors wanted more than the
00:17:07
fingerprint before heading to trial
00:17:09
[Music]
00:17:14
robert douglas knight was charged with
00:17:17
the capital murder of 22 year old dawn
00:17:20
bruce
00:17:21
but police still didn't have the murder
00:17:24
weapon
00:17:25
a faint fingerprint
00:17:27
left on a flimsy pillowcase would be
00:17:30
considered firm evidence in court
00:17:33
and prosecutors soon had a lead on the
00:17:36
murder weapon
00:17:42
six months after the murder
00:17:44
a maintenance man working in night's old
00:17:46
apartment discovered something behind an
00:17:48
access panel in knight's old bedroom
00:17:53
i don't know what possessed him to do
00:17:54
that i think there was a plumbing
00:17:56
problem that caused him to take it off
00:17:58
when he did he looked in and found a
00:18:00
hunting knife in a sheath
00:18:03
in the forensics lab
00:18:05
scientists performed a simple test to
00:18:07
determine if this was the weapon used in
00:18:10
the murder
00:18:12
using photographic overlays the pattern
00:18:15
of the knife was compared to the knife
00:18:18
impressions found on dawn bruce's
00:18:20
pillowcase
00:18:22
they matched
00:18:25
the final piece of evidence was the dna
00:18:28
testing of the semen found at the crime
00:18:31
scene
00:18:32
it matched the dna profile of robert
00:18:35
knight
00:18:41
[Music]
00:18:42
prosecutors believe that dawn bruce
00:18:44
arrived home from work around 1am and
00:18:47
went right to bed
00:18:49
[Music]
00:18:56
sometime around four o'clock
00:18:59
robert knight went to the front window
00:19:01
of dawn's apartment pried it open
00:19:04
and crept upstairs
00:19:07
[Music]
00:19:17
he stabbed dawn in the heart
00:19:20
then
00:19:21
sexually assaulted her
00:19:23
as she bled to death
00:19:30
but knight made mistakes
00:19:33
he wiped the knife on the pillowcase
00:19:36
leaving the impression of the murder
00:19:38
weapon later matched to the knife found
00:19:40
in knight's apartment
00:19:44
he also left the partial bloody
00:19:47
fingerprint on the pillowcase matched
00:19:49
with the latest in computer technology
00:19:54
facing an overwhelming amount of
00:19:57
physical evidence and in an effort to
00:19:59
avoid the death penalty
00:20:01
robert douglas knight pled guilty
00:20:05
he was sentenced to four life terms in
00:20:07
prison
00:20:10
i'm very disappointed that
00:20:12
robert knight didn't get the death
00:20:14
penalty i think he deserved the death
00:20:16
penalty i think the forensic science
00:20:18
played a major part in solving the case
00:20:21
um
00:20:22
some cases are solved just by by pure
00:20:25
interviewing without any evidence and
00:20:27
they are solved but i think this is one
00:20:29
of those cases that would not have been
00:20:30
solved
00:20:32
had it not been for the uh forensic
00:20:34
evidence
00:20:35
that was that was at the scene
00:20:37
when we arrested knight we had
00:20:40
a bare circumstantial case that's all we
00:20:43
had
00:20:44
and it went to being the absolutely
00:20:46
strongest forensic case i've ever
00:20:47
prosecuted in 24 years the only thing
00:20:50
that stands out with me personally is
00:20:52
that i
00:20:53
i believe robert knight deserved and
00:20:55
should have received the death penalty
00:20:57
i don't believe he
00:20:59
deserves to be breathing
00:21:02
eating
00:21:03
sleeping laughing whatever emotions he
00:21:06
may experience
00:21:08
i know one of these days he'll probably
00:21:09
be walking the street again
00:21:11
but it will be a long time and
00:21:14
even though justice was served i think
00:21:16
he was deserving of the death penalty
00:21:19
i told my other daughter
00:21:22
one day when we were talking
00:21:24
about life and about her plans
00:21:28
for family when she said that she didn't
00:21:32
think she was going to have children
00:21:33
because she didn't know that
00:21:35
she could go through
00:21:37
what i had gone through
00:21:40
and i told her if i knew ahead of time
00:21:43
that dawn was going to be murdered
00:21:46
i would still have had dawn because she
00:21:48
brought such joy
00:21:51
to us as her family
00:21:53
not to ever not have children
00:21:56
for fear of loss
00:21:58
because life is not a guarantee
