Forensic Files - Season 4, Episode 1 - Invisible Intruder - Full Episode

November 04, 2021 / 21:46

This episode covers the 1996 murder case of Darlie Routier, focusing on the brutal attack on her two sons, Devin and Damon, and the subsequent investigation.

The episode recounts the events of June 6, 1996, when an intruder attacked the Routier family in their Dallas, Texas home. Darlie Routier was found with serious injuries while her two sons were fatally wounded. The police discovered inconsistencies in Darlie's account of the events, raising suspicions about her involvement.

Forensic evidence played a crucial role in the investigation. Blood spatter analysis suggested that Darlie was the one who inflicted the fatal wounds on her children. The episode highlights the findings of blood experts and the implications of the evidence collected at the crime scene.

As the investigation progressed, Darlie's behavior and actions were scrutinized, including a birthday celebration for her deceased sons just days after their deaths. This raised further questions about her emotional state and potential motives.

Ultimately, Darlie Routier was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. The episode concludes with commentary on the case's impact on public perception of justice in Texas.

TL;DR

Darlie Routier was convicted of murdering her two sons in a case filled with forensic evidence and inconsistencies in her story.

on june 6 1996 in a suburb of dallas
00:00:09
texas there was a crime of unprecedented
00:00:12
horror
00:00:13
an intruder entered this home and
00:00:16
attacked two young children along with
00:00:18
their mother
00:00:20
police hoped that science would lead
00:00:22
them to the assailant

darren and darley routier were a young
00:00:56
couple in their mid-twenties with three
00:00:58
children
00:00:59
six-year-old devin five-year-old damon

00:01:05
darren routier was a successful
00:01:07
entrepreneur
00:01:08
darley stayed at home to care for the
00:01:10
children this was a young couple who had
00:01:13
made good darren owned his own business
00:01:16
in 1995 he had made close to 300
00:01:20
thousand dollars
00:01:21
in his business he repaired mainframe
00:01:24
computers had some extensive contracts
00:01:27
with government agencies
00:01:30
on the night of the attack darren
00:01:32
routier was asleep upstairs with
00:01:34
eight-month-old drake
00:01:39
downstairs in the family room the two
00:01:41
older boys fell asleep watching
00:01:43
television
00:01:47
their mother dolly was asleep on the
00:01:49
sofa
00:01:51
around 2 30 in the morning an intruder
00:01:55
stabbed the children
00:01:56
then woke darling who felt a knife at
00:01:59
her throat after a brief struggle the
00:02:01
intruder fled
00:02:03
and darley called police
00:02:32
when paramedics arrived
00:02:34
six-year-old devon was dead
00:02:37
[Music]
00:02:38
five-year-old damon was barely alive
00:02:42
but he died on route to the hospital
00:02:47
darlie was taken into surgery to repair
00:02:49
her neck wound which missed her carotid
00:02:52
artery by only two centimeters she also
00:02:55
suffered a stab wound to her arm
00:02:58
paramedics noticed that darley's panties
00:03:00
were missing when i asked her if she
00:03:02
thought she'd been raped her answer to
00:03:04
me was well when i woke up i felt some
00:03:06
pressure down there
00:03:09
that was her answer but a rape test was
00:03:11
negative
00:03:14
darley described the assailant as a
00:03:16
white male about six feet tall wearing a
00:03:18
black shirt jeans and a baseball cap
00:03:22
a screen in the routier's garage had
00:03:24
been cut
00:03:26
darley said the intruder dropped the
00:03:28
murder weapon onto the floor as he fled
00:03:32
in the alley two houses away police
00:03:34
discovered a bloody sock
00:03:39
the motive did not appear to be robbery
00:03:42
between the kitchen and the room where
00:03:43
the murders occurred there was 13 rings
00:03:45
and a gold lady's watch laying out there
00:03:47
so
00:03:48
that indicated to us if it was in fact a
00:03:50
burglary or a robbery that had gone bad
00:03:53
there was nothing there was valuables
00:03:55
out there
00:03:55
to be taken and nothing was disturbed
00:03:58
now we don't know why now we know that
00:04:00
this is a sick individual that took
00:04:01
absolutely nothing from our house but
00:04:03
took the most of two most important
00:04:05
things that were important to us
00:04:07
away from us
00:04:09
the most prominent evidence of the crime
00:04:11
scene was blood
00:04:14
forensic scientists hoped the blood
00:04:17
spatter pattern would tell them more
00:04:20
about these horrific murders
00:04:25
when police examined the murder scene it
00:04:28
appeared the assailant entered the
00:04:29
routier home through a screened window
00:04:32
in the garage
00:04:35
darley rootier said she was asleep when
00:04:37
the intruder murdered her two boys
00:04:39
darlee woke when she felt a knife to her
00:04:42
throat there was a struggle and the
00:04:44
assailant fled through the garage
00:04:48
darley said he dropped the murder weapon
00:04:49
onto the floor on his way out
00:04:52
darren root tier said he was asleep
00:04:54
upstairs with eight-month-old drake and
00:04:56
woke when he heard glass breaking
00:04:59
[Music]
00:05:06
when he walked into the family room
00:05:08
where the detectives were waiting for
00:05:10
him the first thing out of his mouth was
00:05:12
not
00:05:13
how is damon how is darley it is have
00:05:16
you seen darley isn't she beautiful and
00:05:19
doesn't she have gorgeous breasts darren
00:05:22
said you know i can see why somebody
00:05:24
came in good looking
00:05:25
good looking blonde you know 38 double
00:05:28
d's
00:05:29
frost that was a little strange too
00:05:31
considering he had just lost both of his
00:05:33
sons and i don't believe at that time he
00:05:35
knew for for a fact if darley was going
00:05:37
to live or not
00:05:40
in the kitchen
00:05:41
police noticed a set of white-handled
00:05:44
knives one space was empty it appeared
00:05:47
the murder weapon a 10-inch
00:05:49
white-handled knife came from the
00:05:51
routier's own kitchen
00:05:54
the blood drops on the floor were
00:05:55
photographed and collected for dna
00:05:57
testing the size and shape of the blood
00:06:00
droplets would be analyzed to see if
00:06:02
they were consistent with darley's
00:06:04
version of events darley's night shirt
00:06:07
was another important piece of blood
00:06:09
evidence
00:06:10
forensic scientists hoped that it too
00:06:13
would provide information about the
00:06:16
murders
00:06:17
dna testing of the bloody sock found in
00:06:20
the alley revealed the blood was that of
00:06:22
the two boys devin and damon
00:06:26
however police bloodhounds were not able
00:06:28
to track the intruder's scent beyond the
00:06:30
location of the sock
00:06:32
why would an intruder leave a murder
00:06:35
weapon behind in a house
00:06:37
and yet take a sock down the alley
00:06:40
why would an intruder leave this sock in
00:06:43
open view for the police to find instead
00:06:44
of disposing it in a garbage can or down
00:06:47
a storm sewer drain
00:06:49
police found some other inconsistencies
00:06:52
darley said she chased the intruder
00:06:54
through the kitchen and he knocked a
00:06:56
wine glass on the floor
00:06:58
but pieces of glass were on top of the
00:07:01
blood drops on the floor and there were
00:07:03
no cuts on darli's feet
00:07:06
underneath the overturned vacuum cleaner
00:07:08
was more blood spatter and a wheel
00:07:10
impression in the blood
00:07:13
it appeared that darley ran through the
00:07:15
kitchen before the glass broke and the
00:07:18
vacuum cleaner overturned
00:07:20
on the handle of the vacuum cleaner was
00:07:22
a blood stain
00:07:24
dna test revealed it was darleys the
00:07:27
blood dripped onto the handle at an 80
00:07:30
degree angle as if darley were leaning
00:07:32
over the vacuum cleaner the pattern was
00:07:34
not consistent with darli's running past
00:07:37
the vacuum as she told police
00:07:39
either darlie routier was mistaken about
00:07:42
what happened in the kitchen or she knew
00:07:45
more about the murders than she was
00:07:47
telling police
00:07:52
blood spatter expert tom bevel was asked
00:07:54
to analyze the blood drops found in the
00:07:56
routier home
00:07:58
as co-author of a well-known textbook on
00:08:01
blood pattern analysis it was bevel's
00:08:03
job to interpret the story told by the
00:08:06
blood trail
00:08:07
bevel noticed the blood drops on the
00:08:09
kitchen floor were circular in shape
00:08:12
meaning they were deposited by someone
00:08:14
standing still or walking very slowly
00:08:19
darley said she was stabbed on the sofa
00:08:22
and while bleeding ran through the
00:08:24
kitchen after her assailant
00:08:28
but running would have produced blood
00:08:30
drops more elliptical in shape usually
00:08:33
with a tail indicating the path and
00:08:35
direction of the person running
00:08:38
darley also told police that the
00:08:41
intruder dropped the knife under the
00:08:43
kitchen floor
00:08:44
but tom bevel could find no evidence of
00:08:47
that
00:08:48
numerous people to include myself
00:08:49
examined that floor to try and find
00:08:52
evidence of a knife drop
00:08:55
either even pointed straight down or
00:08:58
falling on its handle or falling on its
00:09:00
side or whatever and we were unable to
00:09:02
to find anything that would be
00:09:03
consistent with that if it had as much
00:09:06
blood on it as it was found which it
00:09:08
would have to then it should have
00:09:09
produced an outline of a knife or
00:09:11
evidence of the knife dropping onto the
00:09:13
floor
00:09:14
and we simply didn't find that
00:09:17
barry dickey is a forensic audio expert
00:09:20
assigned to analyze dolly's telephone
00:09:22
call to police
00:09:24
[Music]
00:09:30
in order to conduct his analysis dickey
00:09:33
isolated darley's voice by eliminating
00:09:36
all of the background noises
00:09:42
[Music]
00:09:43
[Applause]
00:09:48
in my opinion darley had moved from at
00:09:51
least three different rooms in the house
00:09:54
these rooms were moved in a very rapid
00:09:56
fashion
00:09:57
and she did not stay in any one of the
00:10:00
ambiences very long
00:10:02
but if darley walked briskly in between
00:10:05
rooms
00:10:06
this contradicted her story to police
00:10:11
when police interviewed darley after the
00:10:12
murder she was holding a wet towel to
00:10:14
her neck wound
00:10:16
police wondered if the towel had been
00:10:18
used to clean up blood before they
00:10:20
arrived
00:10:22
to find out investigators used luminol a
00:10:25
chemical that glows when sprayed on an
00:10:27
area where blood has been removed
00:10:30
once we darken the kitchen down and
00:10:32
applied the luminol we were able to see
00:10:35
footprints there in front of the sink
00:10:40
which kind of made the hair on the back
00:10:41
of our neck stand up
00:10:43
the footprints in front of the kitchen
00:10:45
sink were darlies
00:10:47
on the cabinet beneath the sink
00:10:50
there was visible blood
00:10:52
and luminol revealed that more had been
00:10:54
cleaned up before police arrived the
00:10:57
blood evidence in front of the sink
00:10:58
indicated to us that someone had bled
00:11:01
had stand there in front of the sink for
00:11:03
a significant amount of time bleeding
00:11:06
and not moving around there was blood
00:11:08
drops on top of blood drops
00:11:10
in the floor in front of the sink
00:11:12
dna testing revealed the blood belonged
00:11:15
to darley
00:11:16
prosecutors suspected that it was here
00:11:19
where darley cut her neck and arm
00:11:22
if there was an intruder and he came in
00:11:24
he came in without leaving any evidence
00:11:26
of walking through there
00:11:28
also on the carpet was an unusual blood
00:11:31
impression the distinct outline of the
00:11:34
murder weapon the heavy line of blood
00:11:37
near the tip of the blade told forensic
00:11:39
experts something important about the
00:11:42
killer the only way that i am aware that
00:11:44
you could get
00:11:46
something coming off of the knife
00:11:48
in in that manner as we found it would
00:11:50
be to have the knife in the hand
00:11:53
of a person that is bleeding in other
00:11:54
words they are contributing blood
00:11:57
continuously
00:11:59
so if you had a wound on this arm with
00:12:01
the
00:12:02
knife in this hand with the blood
00:12:04
flowing down the arm ultimately across
00:12:06
the hand and then down the blade of the
00:12:09
knife that will produce that very heavy
00:12:11
bleeding that we've got in the front of
00:12:13
the knife in the impression
00:12:15
coincidentally darley had a knife wound
00:12:17
on her right arm
00:12:19
dna test revealed that the blood was
00:12:22
that of both damon and darley and not
00:12:25
that of an unknown assailant
00:12:29
darley said she picked up the knife from
00:12:31
the kitchen floor and put it on the
00:12:33
counter
00:12:34
she said nothing about taking it into
00:12:36
the family room
00:12:38
no bloody trail no fingerprints no uh
00:12:41
trace of the suspect i mean peter pan
00:12:44
came down the chimney maybe and
00:12:45
committed the murder but or you know
00:12:47
tinker bell or somebody but we have
00:12:49
no
00:12:51
evidence of anyone coming through the
00:12:52
window committing the murders
00:12:56
police were now convinced that there was
00:12:59
no intruder in the routier home on the
00:13:02
night of the murders
00:13:05
[Music]
00:13:07
just eight days after the murders the
00:13:10
routiers celebrated what would have been
00:13:13
devin's seventh birthday
00:13:15
at the cemetery
00:13:17
family members invited a local
00:13:19
television news crew to attend
00:13:23
[Music]
00:13:25
if you knew devon and damon
00:13:28
you would know that they're up in heaven
00:13:31
and they're up there having the biggest
00:13:32
birthday party that we could ever
00:13:34
imagine
00:13:35
and they wouldn't want us to be down
00:13:37
here being sad even though our hearts
00:13:38
are breaking
00:13:40
i know that devin
00:13:42
and damon would want us to be happy
00:13:45
district attorney greg davis watched the
00:13:48
celebration on television
00:13:51
i was just sickened by what i saw
00:13:53
because it had only been a week since
00:13:55
these boys deaths and yet we've got a
00:13:58
full-blown birthday party out there at
00:14:00
the graveside and it really struck me as
00:14:03
more than curious
00:14:05
at the dallas county institute of
00:14:07
forensic sciences charles lynch
00:14:10
discovered the most damaging piece of
00:14:12
evidence contradicting darley's intruder
00:14:15
story on one of the bread knives from
00:14:17
the rootier's kitchen
00:14:19
lynch found a single fiberglass rod and
00:14:23
some rubber dust
00:14:25
the cut window screen in the routier
00:14:27
garage was made of polyvinyl chloride
00:14:30
bundles
00:14:31
the interior core of that bundle was
00:14:33
composed of fiberglass rods
00:14:37
the fiberglass rod found on the kitchen
00:14:40
knife was identical to the fiberglass
00:14:42
rods from the rooters screen
00:14:46
lynch could not find any other source of
00:14:48
fiberglass inside the routier home that
00:14:51
was similar
00:14:52
so i was able to eliminate all of the
00:14:54
sources of fiberglass that i could find
00:14:57
as being a source so
00:14:59
the conclusion is that a fiberglass rod
00:15:02
found on the bread knife
00:15:04
may have
00:15:05
come from the window screen but not to
00:15:07
the exclusion of all other sources
00:15:10
fbi profiler alan brantley was convinced
00:15:14
there was no intruder
00:15:16
we have never seen a case where an
00:15:18
offender comes from outside the
00:15:20
residence
00:15:21
breaks into the home
00:15:22
takes a knife and then goes back outside
00:15:25
the home and cuts the screen to come
00:15:27
back in
00:15:28
those
00:15:29
steps that kind of behavior is just
00:15:32
unnecessary to the commission of any
00:15:35
kind of an offense unless you're
00:15:37
attempting to make the scene
00:15:39
look like something you think it should
00:15:41
look like or that you want other people
00:15:42
to believe
00:15:44
occur
00:15:44
and again that's an element of stage and
00:15:47
on darley's night shirt scientists found
00:15:50
cast off blood spatter on the back right
00:15:53
shoulder area
00:15:55
dna testing revealed that the blood
00:15:57
belonged to the two boys
00:16:00
some of those blood stains are
00:16:02
coming in a direction consistent with
00:16:05
the movement of the item that was
00:16:07
bloodstained
00:16:08
in my opinion in this case the the knife
00:16:11
as you're drawing the knife backward
00:16:14
the blood is coming off of the end of
00:16:16
the knife as it's being drawn backward
00:16:18
and of course if it's close enough and
00:16:20
it's still in an upward flight it will
00:16:22
point in an upward direction with the
00:16:24
blood stains
00:16:26
the blood spatter was pointed upwards
00:16:28
consistent with the movement of a bloody
00:16:30
knife in darley's right hand
00:16:33
the forensic evidence all told a story
00:16:37
a story quite different from the one
00:16:39
darley told police
00:16:41
[Music]
00:16:43
prosecutors believe that the murders
00:16:45
were premeditated and the darley
00:16:48
encouraged the boys to sleep with her
00:16:50
that night in the family room
00:17:00
sometime after 2 a.m
00:17:03
darlie took a bread knife from the
00:17:05
kitchen
00:17:06
and cut the screen in the garage
00:17:16
she returned the knife to the holder
00:17:18
without rinsing the fiberglass residue
00:17:20
found later by forensic scientists
00:17:24
darlie used the largest knife she had
00:17:28
to murder her two children
00:17:33
blood spatter on the back right shoulder
00:17:35
of her night shirt placed the murder
00:17:37
weapon in darley's hand
00:17:40
[Music]
00:17:43
speculation is the darley may have
00:17:44
removed her panties to suggest the
00:17:47
possibility of a sexual assault
00:17:51
standing at the kitchen sink
00:17:54
darlie turned the knife on herself
00:17:56
slicing both her neck and right arm
00:18:05
then something unexpected happened
00:18:07
five-year-old damon was still alive
00:18:10
crawling through the family room
00:18:13
he was stabbed two more times
00:18:17
the knife impression on the carpet was
00:18:19
caused by blood from her arm wound as it
00:18:22
dripped over the tip of the knife
00:18:27
[Music]
00:18:36
the audio analysis of the
00:18:41
moving in 911 rooms quickly as she
00:18:43
staged the crime scene and removed some
00:18:46
of the blood evidence
00:18:51
[Music]
00:19:03
but darley's attempt to mislead
00:19:05
investigators
00:19:07
failed
00:19:10
it's hard to explain it but
00:19:13
these kids were in her way
00:19:15
they were in the way of her lifestyle
00:19:17
and her ambitions
00:19:20
and what she wanted to do and
00:19:23
she simply made a decision that those
00:19:24
children would no longer be in her way
00:19:28
darli routier was arrested and charged
00:19:32
with the murder of her two sons
00:19:34
darren routier denied he was involved
00:19:37
and no charges were filed against him
00:19:40
patricia springer described the possible
00:19:43
motive in her book flesh and blood
00:19:46
there is no one reason why darlee
00:19:48
routier did this it is a combination of
00:19:51
things it had nothing to do with money
00:19:53
it had to do with the multiple births
00:19:55
with the total responsibility we've
00:19:58
learned since then that darren really
00:19:59
didn't help a lot with the children
00:20:02
they painted this picture of the perfect
00:20:05
family and how great they were and
00:20:08
everything they did was as a family but
00:20:10
the family knife was an illusion
00:20:13
that they um perpetrated on anyone that
00:20:16
would listen to it darley routier was
00:20:18
found guilty of first degree murder and
00:20:21
was sentenced to death
00:20:23
she currently sits on death row
00:20:26
awaiting execution
00:20:28
texas is a pretty conservative state and
00:20:31
i want everybody to know
00:20:33
that you can't go out and kill our
00:20:35
children and expect to live
00:20:37
i think that darley
00:20:41
got exactly what she deserved in this
00:20:43
case
00:20:45
we probably gave her
00:20:47
more justice than she deserved in this
00:20:50
case
00:20:52
if you look at the barbaric acts
00:20:54
that brought her to that courtroom
00:20:57
we did all the that the system allowed
00:20:59
us to do to her but she richly deserves
00:21:02
to be on death row and she richly
00:21:03
deserves to be executed one day
00:21:07
[Music]
00:21:16
[Applause]
00:21:19
so
00:21:22
[Music]
00:21:44
you
