Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 11, Episode 7 - Full Episode

May 23, 2019 / 43:22

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers four cases: the kidnapping and murder of Nick Markowitz, the disappearance of Jill Biermann, the tragic fate of Nancy Hayer and Billy Fisher, and the mystery surrounding Kristen Mota Ferry.

The case of Nick Markowitz involves a drug debt owed by his half-brother Ben to Jesse James Hollywood. Nick was kidnapped and later murdered after Jesse realized he could not release him without facing legal consequences. The investigation led to the arrest of Jesse's accomplices, but Jesse remains a fugitive.

Jill Biermann, a 19-year-old cyclist from Bloomington, Indiana, vanished during a morning bike ride. Despite extensive searches and numerous tips, her disappearance remains unsolved. Authorities suspect she may have been abducted or involved in a tragic accident.

Nancy Hayer and Billy Fisher's story ends in tragedy when they are both found dead after a night that began with a simple act of kindness. Billy's father, William Fisher, is implicated in the murders but has evaded capture for nearly two decades.

Lastly, Kristen Mota Ferry, an 18-year-old visiting San Francisco, disappears after her shift at a coffee shop. Despite various leads and a mysterious phone call claiming she was murdered, her whereabouts remain unknown.

TL;DR

Four tragic stories of kidnapping, murder, and disappearance highlight the dark side of seemingly ordinary lives.

00:02:24
for most of his life Ben has been in
00:02:26
trouble and now young Nick is about to
00:02:29
be engulfed in Ben's world of deceit and
00:02:32
betrayal Ben owes money to this man
00:02:36
Jesse James Hollywood who has given his
00:02:39
notorious name at birth on August 6 2011
00:02:46
and collect what is owed him one way or
00:02:49
another
00:02:51
according to reports Jesse and two of
00:02:54
his friends cruised the quiet streets of
00:02:56
West Hills California looking for Ben
00:02:58
they cannot find him but instead sputnik
00:03:02
a fateful decision is made

hey hey hey guys witnesses say that they
00:03:27
saw the van pull over and there was a

00:03:43
on that day he was simply a young man
00:03:48
who his only problem was he had an older
00:03:51
brother who had provoked the wrath of
00:03:53
Jesse James Hollywood the first glance
00:03:57
Jesse James Hollywood and his friends
00:03:59
seemed like difficult suburban teenagers
00:04:01
they grew up in loving middle-class
00:04:03
homes and were given every chance to
00:04:05
succeed in life but somewhere along the
00:04:08
way Jesse allegedly went off truck and
00:04:11
by chance Nicholas Markowitz crossed
00:04:13
Jesse's path the result was catastrophic
00:04:16
now one of them is dead and the other a
00:04:19
fugitive from justice as a child there
00:04:25
was no hint that Jesse James's outlaw
00:04:27
name might turn out to be prophetic
00:04:29
Jesse and his close-knit group of
00:04:31
friends would spent countless summer
00:04:33
days playing baseball while their
00:04:35
families watched with pride but police
00:04:39
believe that Jesse the innocent little
00:04:41
leaguer somehow transformed into a
00:04:43
big-time suburban drug dealer incredibly
00:04:47
at the age of 19 Jesse reportedly
00:04:50
amassed enough illicit profits to buy an
00:04:52
expensive home and the party began Jesse
00:04:56
James Hollywood was driving expensive
00:04:58
cars he was partying with his friends
00:05:02
nearly a daily basis and he was living a
00:05:07
rather lavish lifestyle for a young man
00:05:09
without any legitimate means of
00:05:10
employment
00:05:13
less than two miles away but a world
00:05:16
apart
00:05:17
fifteen-year-old Nick Markowitz lived
00:05:19
with his parents Jeff and Susan a Nick
00:05:24
was a typical teenager he's a likable
00:05:29
kid every loved Nick he had a great
00:05:31
sense of humor he was always positive
00:05:34
and fun to be around but Nick's 25 year
00:05:40
old half-brother Ben was an entirely
00:05:41
different story
00:05:43
according to police Ben was a friend of
00:05:45
Jesse Hollywood and often bought
00:05:47
marijuana from him shortly before the
00:05:52
kidnapping Ben and Jesse had a
00:05:54
falling-out after Ben refused to pay a
00:05:56
$1,200 drug debt he's a real little guy
00:06:02
very obnoxious just the type of guy
00:06:05
you'd want to take his stuff
00:06:06
I didn't fear him he was like I just
00:06:09
said he was just jesse was just a little
00:06:10
man and I was like $1,200 yesterday I'll
00:06:14
get you later buddy
00:06:16
what's going on Ben Jessie where have
00:06:20
you been
00:06:21
Jesse James Hollywood reportedly
00:06:23
confronted been on several occasions I
00:06:26
told you I will get your money
00:06:27
alright welcome to my house like this
00:06:30
come your house what are you smoking huh
00:06:33
this is your last chance you got that
00:06:41
after numerous run-ins with Ben Jessie
00:06:44
reportedly had had enough and on August
00:06:48
6th he went looking for his former
00:06:49
friend Nick Markowitz just happened to
00:06:53
be in the wrong place at the wrong time
00:06:59
I was making Nick breakfast and went
00:07:03
upstairs to get him and he was not there
00:07:06
i paged him and he did not return my
00:07:10
page I guess I must have paged him a
00:07:13
hundred times
00:07:14
I knew something is wrong police believe
00:07:17
that Nick could not return his mother's
00:07:19
call because Jesse James had kidnapped
00:07:21
him
00:07:23
Nick was purportedly taken to a home in
00:07:26
Santa Barbara California and restrained
00:07:29
there he would remain a hostage until
00:07:32
his brother Ben paid his debt on the
00:07:38
following day
00:07:39
witnesses report seeing Nick at the
00:07:41
Santa Barbara home jesse is not at the
00:07:44
house Nick is no longer bound nor gagged
00:07:48
in fact Nick's captors seemed to treat
00:07:51
him like a guest Nick was free to move
00:07:56
around the residence young people that
00:07:58
did come and go from the residence
00:07:59
although they were told that he had been
00:08:01
in essence kidnapped by his demeanor
00:08:05
there he was not acting as they might
00:08:07
expect someone that was had been
00:08:09
kidnapped would be acting I personally
00:08:13
feel that Nick had the expectation that
00:08:15
at some point in time he would be freed
00:08:17
don't worry about him he's fine in the
00:08:19
ensuing days there was no reported
00:08:21
effort by Jesse James Hollywood to
00:08:22
exchange Nick for the money Ben
00:08:24
Markowitz owed him according to
00:08:26
witnesses
00:08:27
Jesse realized the situation was quickly
00:08:29
spiraling out of control he telephoned
00:08:31
his lawyer for advice at long
00:08:34
it can't be police believe that Jesse
00:08:37
came to a disturbing realization if Nick
00:08:39
was released and told authorities about
00:08:41
the spontaneous kidnapping Jesse could
00:08:43
spend the rest of his life behind bars
00:08:46
we believe that as a result of that
00:08:49
conversation Jesse came to the
00:08:51
conclusion that he would be in a better
00:08:53
situation to kill Nick as opposed to
00:08:57
trying to return him authorities
00:09:00
theorize that Jesse then contacted this
00:09:02
man Ryan Hoyt a 21 year old acquaintance
00:09:05
who also Oh Jesse $1,200 for drugs in
00:09:09
this home video taken by Jesse James
00:09:12
Hollywood he can be heard demanding
00:09:14
payment from Ryan
00:09:32
[Music]
00:09:34
Jesse allegedly offered Ryan a way to
00:09:37
pay off his debt hey Ryan its Jesse
00:09:42
listen I got a little proposition for
00:09:45
you on August 8th police believe that
00:09:51
Ryan Hoyt and two accomplices led Nick
00:09:53
Markovitz to Lizards mouth a remote area
00:09:57
in the Los Padres National Forest Jesse
00:10:00
James Hollywood was not there

we were friends
00:10:39
all of us we were friends and the way
00:10:43
that it went down
00:10:44
I feel very responsible for it all I can
00:10:48
really do is just over thinking in my
00:10:50
head and you know believing there's many
00:10:52
nights where I couldn't sleep
00:10:54
four days later the body of Nick
00:10:57
Markowitz was discovered an anonymous
00:11:00
tip from a teenager who saw Nick at the
00:11:02
Santa Barbara home quickly identified
00:11:05
several suspects and his kidnapping and
00:11:07
murder within days police arrested Ryan
00:11:11
Hoyt and three accomplices for the crime
00:11:13
all for a pleaded not guilty and remain
00:11:17
in custody at the Santa Barbara County
00:11:19
Jail
00:11:21
but Jesse James Hollywood was nowhere to
00:11:24
be found
00:11:25
authorities believe publicity about the
00:11:27
murder caused Hollywood to flee we don't
00:11:30
know where he went
00:11:32
we don't know where he is now but he did
00:11:34
leave the jurisdiction eventually and he
00:11:36
returned to the San Fernando Valley area
00:11:41
but since that time his whereabouts have
00:11:43
been unknown to us nightmares you wake

the candles flame represents the flicker
00:12:39
of hope that they will solve a
00:12:41
perplexing mystery that has shattered
00:12:43
their lives on May 31st mm the 19 year
00:12:54
old daughter Jill looked forward to
00:12:56
another morning indulging her passion
00:12:58
for fitness
00:12:59
she left their home in Bloomington
00:13:02
Indiana at 9:00 a.m.
00:13:03
her job did not begin until noon she had
00:13:07
plenty of time to first enjoy the sport
00:13:09
she loved best Jill treated a bike ride
00:13:15
like a workout she took it pretty
00:13:17
seriously and she wanted to ride hard
00:13:20
and her friends have told me that going
00:13:23
for a bike ride with Jill was not very
00:13:25
much fun because they couldn't keep up
00:13:27
[Music]
00:13:29
Jill had just completed her freshman
00:13:31
year as a business major at Indiana
00:13:33
University her family and friends
00:13:36
describer is the epitome of a fun-loving
00:13:39
all-american girl
00:13:46
12 hours later Eric and Marilyn became
00:13:49
alarmed when Jill failed to return home
00:13:52
its way after dark it's very late
00:13:55
it's cold outside and I was alternating
00:13:57
between being sad or worried or maybe
00:14:01
even angry thinking why would she do
00:14:04
this why would she go off and not tell
00:14:06
us what she's up to
00:14:07
I mean just all those mixed emotions I
00:14:10
don't know what to think it was then
00:14:13
that we both were really I think
00:14:15
terrified as to just what might have
00:14:18
happened to her
00:14:20
Jill Biermann had vanished without a
00:14:22
trace
00:14:24
Bloomington Police and the FBI received
00:14:26
over 3,000 tips but what happened to
00:14:29
jill is still unknown
00:14:31
authorities believe she might have been
00:14:33
abducted although there was no evidence
00:14:35
to support that conclusion they also
00:14:38
thought she may have been the victim of
00:14:39
a hit and run accident but if that were
00:14:42
true where was her body the
00:14:44
investigation yielded many clues but no
00:14:46
answers news of Jill's disappearance
00:14:52
spread quickly throughout Bloomington
00:14:57
two days after she vanished townspeople
00:15:00
by the hundreds joined investigators in
00:15:03
an exhaustive search local cycling clubs
00:15:12
trace the roots Jill may have taken they
00:15:18
had groups of people not only searching
00:15:20
the roads but about a hundred and fifty
00:15:22
feet or so off on each side of the road
00:15:25
in the woods and the ravines and the
00:15:28
areas along several of the roads and
00:15:31
places that we know that jail-like tried
00:15:37
despite the massive effort no trace of
00:15:40
Jill was found but the same day the
00:15:45
search began a vital clue surfaced a
00:15:48
resident of Bloomington step forward
00:15:51
reporting that he had retrieved an
00:15:53
abandoned bicycle two days earlier the
00:15:56
same day Jill had disappeared only later
00:16:01
when news about Jill broke did he
00:16:04
realizes significance the bicycle serial
00:16:07
number enabled police to confirm that it
00:16:10
was Jill's
00:16:15
investigators search the area
00:16:17
surrounding where the bike was found but
00:16:22
they found nothing the location raised
00:16:27
their suspicions
00:16:28
Jill was last seen south of her home
00:16:31
riding in a southerly direction her bike
00:16:34
was ten miles northwest of that site
00:16:36
that's not a route that she would have
00:16:39
been on that day that's about ten miles
00:16:43
away it's through town it's through a
00:16:46
great deal of traffic and Jill hated
00:16:49
riding in any kind of traffic she just
00:16:51
she wouldn't ride in the traffic she's
00:16:55
not with the bike and the bike is
00:16:57
somewhere she would not have ridden and
00:16:59
this isn't making any sense this is even
00:17:02
more mysterious and more scary now
00:17:05
because now I don't know what to think
00:17:09
three days after Jill vanished the
00:17:12
mystery deepened a digital radio was
00:17:15
found neatly placed in the parking lot
00:17:17
of a Bloomington Church it was the same
00:17:20
model in color as one that Jill usually
00:17:22
took with her when she cycled
00:17:27
at the moment the radio was found a
00:17:29
churchgoer in the parking lot witnessed
00:17:32
a pickup truck that investigators viewed
00:17:34
with suspicion there's no indication
00:17:37
that that pickup truck was related to
00:17:39
the Walkman however we've attempted to
00:17:41
try and find the not only the pickup
00:17:44
truck but certainly that the individual
00:17:46
driving and we've been unsuccessful in
00:17:47
doing that ten days later a young woman
00:17:51
Jill's age was involved in an attempted
00:17:54
abduction just three miles from where
00:17:55
Jill's bike was found
00:17:58
[Music]
00:18:03
we certainly believe that dude there
00:18:04
could be a correlation between the event
00:18:07
and Aliceville and Joe's disappearance
00:18:10
is it possible that the same assailant
00:18:13
who is still unidentified also targeted
00:18:16
June we've had any number of theories in
00:18:19
this and certainly one of those theories
00:18:21
is that Joe was targeted and that they
00:18:28
placed the bicycle in an area different
00:18:31
from where she was last seen in an
00:18:33
effort to try and at least lead us away
00:18:36
from the area in which she was in fact
00:18:38
abducted the possibility that Jill was
00:18:41
abducted seemed more plausible when news
00:18:44
broke a year later about another female
00:18:46
cyclist in Kentucky a motorist struck
00:18:51
her and tried to drag her into his car
00:18:54
before he was chased away by a witness a
00:18:56
police artist made this sketch of the
00:18:59
suspect but whether this man also
00:19:01
attempted to abduct Jill is unknown
00:19:05
the only other theory investigators
00:19:08
consider possible is that Jill was a
00:19:10
victim of a hit and run accident we
00:19:12
believe that it was certainly possible
00:19:14
that that Jill was struck by a group of
00:19:16
people who were high on drugs alcohol
00:19:18
involved that these folks panicked and
00:19:22
instead of leaving her or trying to get
00:19:26
help for her
00:19:28
they put her and the bike in a vehicle
00:19:30
and and took her
00:19:36
the hit and run theory however is flawed
00:19:38
by one perplexing detail the damage that
00:19:42
Jill's bicycle was minimal still
00:19:46
investigators say it is possible that
00:19:48
Jill was not struck while riding but
00:19:50
after she dismounted to rest or make
00:19:53
repairs ultimately however what happened
00:19:56
to Jill remains unknown
00:20:02
it's one of the hardest things about
00:20:04
this whole situation is the not knowing
00:20:08
without knowing whether she's alive
00:20:11
without knowing where she is
00:20:13
I missed that smile I miss her laugh
00:20:19
it's a nightmare
00:20:21
that just keeps going on
00:20:27
every night we light the candle on the
00:20:31
front doorstep and it stays lit all
00:20:35
night until the next morning it kind of
00:20:39
a beacon of hope and just as a reminder
00:20:43
that Jill is still missing
00:20:45
and every day we pray that that's going
00:20:49
to be the day that we find you
00:20:52
[Music]
00:21:00
[Music]
00:21:10
so did we just pick up the phrase in the
00:21:13
park 21 year old Nancy hire a 19 year
00:21:16
old Billy Fisher met by chance in 1986
00:21:23
Billy first saw Nancy on a train heading
00:21:26
it in New York City she had become lost
00:21:28
and was on the verge of tears
00:21:31
Billy stepped forward and volunteered to
00:21:33
escort Nancy back home to Hicksville
00:21:35
Long Island the two began a close
00:21:38
friendship Nancy thought Billy was a
00:21:43
really nice guy she did say to me you
00:21:45
starting to look at me like a girlfriend
00:21:47
kind of thing and I don't like him that
00:21:49
way but she didn't want to hurt his
00:21:51
feelings because he was so nice on a
00:21:57
stormy night three weeks later Nancy
00:21:59
received a call from Billy alrighty I'll
00:22:03
talk to you later
00:22:04
febre wonder if I'll actually be able to
00:22:08
follow those directions she told her
00:22:10
sister Debra that Billy had asked for a
00:22:11
ride home from his father's house in
00:22:13
Southampton despite the weather
00:22:16
Nancy decided to repay Billy's earlier
00:22:19
act of kindness I don't really think you
00:22:21
should be going out was whether Nancy
00:22:23
and I said I can't believe you're gonna
00:22:25
drive in this weather you don't even
00:22:26
like to drive at night and she says well
00:22:28
he's done so much for me that I'm gonna
00:22:31
just go alrighty I'm all ready to go
00:22:36
you look great thank you
00:22:40
Nancy's mother Joan was also concerned
00:22:42
about her daughter driving during a
00:22:44
storm as I saw my daughter drive away I
00:22:49
was a little fearful myself worry just
00:22:54
mother's worry that's enough
00:23:04
Lancey higher set off into the downpour
00:23:06
for the hour and a half drive to
00:23:07
southampton her friendship with Billy
00:23:10
Fisher would soon lead to tragedy an
00:23:19
unsuspecting Nancy hire was heading
00:23:21
straight into another family's conflict
00:23:23
one that was about to turn violent Billy
00:23:26
Fisher had cystic fibrosis a
00:23:28
degenerative respiratory disease and was
00:23:30
overwhelmed with medical bills he was
00:23:33
seeking money from his estranged father
00:23:35
who'd abandoned the family 15 years
00:23:36
earlier what followed next was a chain
00:23:39
reaction of ill-fated events ultimately
00:23:41
put Nancy higher in the wrong place at
00:23:44
the wrong time
00:23:46
[Music]
00:23:49
at the time Billy Fisher met Nancy he
00:23:52
was swamped in debt and increasingly ill
00:23:54
hi may I speak to William Fisher please
00:23:56
he decided to ask his father William for
00:23:59
help even though the two hadn't spoken
00:24:02
in over a year he was employed by a
00:24:07
well-to-do car dealership in Manhattan
00:24:10
Lynn City New York was making a very
00:24:12
high salary the investigation determined
00:24:15
that he began and had been using cocaine
00:24:17
extensively to the point that it
00:24:20
affected his performance at his place of
00:24:22
employment Billy's father invited his
00:24:27
son to visit for the weekend and
00:24:29
discussed the money situation Billy how
00:24:32
you doing okay come on I'm not gonna
00:24:34
bite you
00:24:35
nobody knows how Billy got to South
00:24:37
Hampton
00:24:41
but a day after arriving he called Nancy
00:24:44
hire to take him home
00:24:49
[Music]
00:24:52
that night Joan higher waited anxiously
00:24:55
for Nancy to return I was pacing the
00:24:59
living room constantly at the front door
00:25:01
looking out the window the clock was
00:25:04
going 12 o'clock 1 o'clock 2 o'clock I
00:25:09
kind of figured she's a responsible girl
00:25:13
she might have had to stay over cuz of
00:25:15
the weather or the time of night but
00:25:18
then I still kept hesitant because I
00:25:22
said she would never not call me yes
00:25:24
well I know she's 21 but could you
00:25:26
please
00:25:27
the next morning still no call Joan
00:25:29
began to panic the police could not help
00:25:32
Nancy had not been gone long enough to
00:25:34
be declared missing okay mom I know she
00:25:36
left directions and a phone number
00:25:37
around her somewhere I don't know where
00:25:39
she left it running out of options
00:25:41
Joan and Nancy's sister Debra rummage
00:25:44
through her bedroom wait here it is
00:25:46
Fisher
00:25:50
ah yes hello this is Nancy hires mother
00:25:55
Joan mr. Fisher yes I'd like to know if
00:25:59
my daughter came out there last evening
00:26:00
yeah she was here I cooked the roast we
00:26:05
had some drinks and dinner and for you
00:26:09
young lady he said we had dinner he said
00:26:17
and I gave them something to drink
00:26:19
nice to see his son and they went out
00:26:22
after that well listen you both take
00:26:25
care and drive safely
00:26:27
he said oh they probably just went
00:26:29
somewhere he says or Billy somewhere and
00:26:32
Nancy somewhere else
00:26:33
if I hear anything I'll give you a call
00:26:36
he seemed very forthcoming that he was
00:26:39
concerned about his own son we were
00:26:42
thinking at that point that young Billy
00:26:44
had taken her somewhere and done
00:26:48
something
00:26:52
another day passed with no sign of Nancy
00:26:55
and Joan filed a missing-persons report
00:26:57
but with no proof of foul play that was
00:27:00
little the police could do so June
00:27:04
turned back to the last person who saw
00:27:06
her daughter she repeatedly called
00:27:09
William Fisher who became increasingly
00:27:11
confrontational mr. Fisher could you go
00:27:14
over step by step exactly what happened
00:27:17
that evening look like I told you before
00:27:19
they came over he would fly off the
00:27:22
handle and tell me let the police handle
00:27:25
this I have no idea where these kids
00:27:27
went and he was getting very very
00:27:30
hostile over the phone goodbye
00:27:34
so I kept getting more suspicious of mr.
00:27:39
Fisher
00:27:45
ten days after Nancy's disappearance in
00:27:48
a parking lot two miles from William
00:27:50
Fisher's house police responded to a
00:27:53
report of an abandoned car giver Nancy
00:27:57
higher Czar's it comes back to that
00:27:59
missing girl Nancy hire see if he could
00:28:01
pop the trunk oh my god
00:28:04
sorry get back here oh my god they're
00:28:10
located in the trunk of the car was a
00:28:12
young Billy Fisher a second body was
00:28:14
located on anything and that was young
00:28:16
Nancy the autopsy reported that Billy
00:28:21
had been shot 18 times the vast majority
00:28:25
of those rounds were in the head at
00:28:26
close range
00:28:28
Nancy's autopsy revealed that she had
00:28:31
been stabbed twice with a very long a
00:28:33
sharp instrument at that same time
00:28:38
neighbors report a strange activity at
00:28:40
the Fisher home apparently William was
00:28:45
remodeling his master bedroom at 3:00
00:28:48
a.m. in the morning well you can see
00:28:52
it's been freshly painted police secured
00:28:55
a search warrant for the Fisher
00:28:56
residence
00:29:00
slight indentations were observed in a
00:29:02
section of the wall and it was removed
00:29:04
so we fine here - 22 caliber bullets
00:29:09
were recovered a single strand of hair
00:29:12
was fused to one of the bullets it was
00:29:14
identified as Billy Fisher's
00:29:19
that established that this was the crime
00:29:21
scene additional testing established
00:29:23
that there was a large amount of blood
00:29:25
splattered all about the halls of the
00:29:27
hallway consistent with an individual
00:29:33
Nancy being stabbed in that area
00:29:35
immediately outside to miss the bedroom
00:29:38
well what does that mean
00:29:41
that means the evidence clearly
00:29:43
implicated William Fisher but the sheer
00:29:45
brutality of the killings obscured his
00:29:47
motive
00:29:48
well everybody works to pay the bills so
00:29:50
watch it's not enough what could have
00:29:52
caused Fisher's even a man with plenty
00:29:54
to loot enough to shoot his son 18 times
00:29:57
on the murder a complete stranger afford
00:29:59
to live here if I don't work why don't
00:30:02
you help me could an argument have
00:30:08
broken out of her abilities financial
00:30:10
problems just the same as always it's
00:30:12
always about money isn't it it's you you
00:30:15
you constantly Nancy who's only in the
00:30:23
house because of an act of kindness was
00:30:25
now a witness to murder I can't imagine
00:30:33
a parent killing their own child and
00:30:38
then taking someone else's child that
00:30:42
they don't even know anything about
00:30:44
I just can't still today believe that
00:30:50
anything could happen like this police
00:30:54
sought a warrant for murder against
00:30:56
William Fisher but before could be
00:30:58
issued Fisher disappeared his car was
00:31:02
found abandoned at JFK Airport
00:31:04
police later discovered he had taken a
00:31:07
second mortgage out on his house in
00:31:08
excess of $100,000 William Fisher has
00:31:13
evaded arrest on murder charges for
00:31:15
nearly two decades
00:31:21
William Peter Fisher is 57 years old 5
00:31:24
feet 11 inches tall and 185 to 200
00:31:28
pounds these Asian hands photos depict
00:31:32
what Fisher may look like today
00:31:34
he wears expensive clothing drinks
00:31:37
heavily and may have fled the country
00:31:49
[Music]
00:31:50
San Francisco California
00:31:53
eighteen-year-old Kristen Mota ferry
00:31:55
enjoys a summer of adventure account
00:31:58
each honor student she is 3,000 miles
00:32:00
from her home in North Carolina the
00:32:05
extended visit is a dream come true for
00:32:07
a young woman eager to explore life on
00:32:09
her own Monday June 23rd begins like any
00:32:18
other day
00:32:19
a 7:00 a.m. she arrives at the upscale
00:32:21
Crocker Galleria she has taken a job at
00:32:25
a coffee shop to pay for a photography
00:32:27
course at UC Berkeley as always she's
00:32:32
eager to explore the city at the end of
00:32:34
her shift according to the new friends
00:32:36
she had met perhaps too eager she wanted
00:32:40
to come to the big city and find some
00:32:42
excitement but it seemed to be coupled
00:32:47
with a naivete maybe are not a real
00:32:54
understanding of
00:32:56
how the big city works
00:32:58
[Music]
00:33:01
at three o'clock Kristen leaves a coffee
00:33:04
shop then disappears without a trace
00:33:11
Kristen Morrow fairies dream summer in
00:33:13
San Francisco lasted only three weeks
00:33:15
the police would be frustrated by
00:33:18
tantalizing leads that went nowhere a
00:33:20
mysterious blonde woman seen with
00:33:22
Kristen Page is inexplicably torn from a
00:33:25
diary and an anonymous phone call
00:33:27
directing them to a shadowy figure who
00:33:29
may know what happened the mystery is a
00:33:32
nightmare not only for the police but
00:33:34
also for Kristen's parents Bob and Debby
00:33:41
Mota Ferry wasted no time after they
00:33:44
learned Kristen had vanished the
00:33:46
following day they flew the 3,000 miles
00:33:49
from North Carolina when we found out
00:33:54
that she had disappeared we were just
00:33:55
shocked we couldn't eat we barely spoke
00:34:00
we just were just even having trouble
00:34:04
breathing when you are faced with a
00:34:09
situation like this you really don't
00:34:13
know how strong you can be you can
00:34:17
either crawl in a hole and die and give
00:34:19
up or you can fight and I think we there
00:34:23
was no choice for us we were going to
00:34:25
fight for our daughter
00:34:28
but finding Kristin would be a
00:34:30
formidable task
00:34:31
like many missing-persons cases it was
00:34:34
difficult even knowing where to start
00:34:37
you don't have a crime scene you have no
00:34:41
witnesses you can't even establish that
00:34:44
a crime has occurred and you just kind
00:34:46
of build on little pieces of information
00:34:49
hunches whatever you can come up with
00:34:52
and see if you can put the puzzle
00:34:55
together one of the first pieces of the
00:34:59
puzzle it was a sighting of Kristen by
00:35:01
one of her co-workers 45 minutes after
00:35:04
her shift ended she was seen in the
00:35:06
Crocker Galleria with a blonde woman she
00:35:09
thought that was kind of strange because
00:35:11
she never really stuck around
00:35:13
work as soon as she checked out she was
00:35:15
gone and they were very close together
00:35:18
like they were hanging out together
00:35:21
talking together definitely with each
00:35:23
other and so we've made a lot of effort
00:35:26
to try to get the blonde woman to come
00:35:28
forward identify herself and we appealed
00:35:31
a number of times through the media but
00:35:34
never got a response to all our and
00:35:37
peels to the blonde woman to come
00:35:38
forward with few leads the police took
00:35:43
an unusual step a bloodhound attempted
00:35:46
to retrace Kristin's path from the
00:35:48
coffee shop the day she vanished when we
00:35:51
were downtown I could tell he was on a
00:35:53
trail he knew exactly where he was going
00:35:55
every turn was perfect
00:35:57
the police could not be certain however
00:36:00
that this was a path Kristin took the
00:36:02
day she disappeared that could have been
00:36:04
Arad Kristin had previously traveled
00:36:06
without incident he then led us up to
00:36:10
Geary Street heading out towards lands
00:36:13
and beach Kristin's co-workers had told
00:36:17
police that on the day she vanished she
00:36:19
talked to visiting lens and beach we
00:36:23
then got down to the beach area and came
00:36:25
to a point where the trail seemed to
00:36:27
have stopped a chilling possibility
00:36:31
revealed itself that's a very
00:36:34
treacherous part of the San Francisco
00:36:37
water line numerous people each year are
00:36:41
washed off the rocks
00:36:42
and are never seen again so that was a
00:36:46
distinct possibility that she had in
00:36:48
fact fallen into the ocean we really
00:36:52
don't believe that's what happened to
00:36:54
Kristen it's a very tourist oriented
00:36:58
area there's always people around if she
00:37:01
had fallen into the water somebody would
00:37:04
have seen something if Kristin did not
00:37:08
suffer a tragic accident what became of
00:37:10
her ABC 7 a startling twist to the
00:37:16
mystery occurred 17 days after she
00:37:18
vanished
00:37:19
an anonymous male telephone and a San
00:37:22
Francisco TV news Ruiz he said Kristen
00:37:25
had been murdered he went into a very
00:37:29
long description of who he said killed
00:37:32
her and he told me that there were two
00:37:35
women and he named them and he said that
00:37:38
Kristen had been killed as a result of a
00:37:40
lesbian love affair that went wrong
00:37:43
detectives tracked down the two women
00:37:45
named by the caller but determined they
00:37:48
did not know Kristen and had nothing to
00:37:50
do with her disappearance we then asked
00:37:53
these people who has a grudge against
00:37:56
you who would want to see you go through
00:38:00
this and each person separate and
00:38:02
independent gave the name of John
00:38:06
alright so I made the phone call so what
00:38:08
John who asked us not to use his last
00:38:11
name told police that two women were his
00:38:13
girlfriend's employers he claimed they
00:38:16
were harassing her at work to get back
00:38:19
at them he said he phoned in the false
00:38:21
tip he said he got the idea when he saw
00:38:24
TV news coverage about Kristen and he
00:38:27
knew nothing about the case beyond what
00:38:29
he saw on television Megan still the
00:38:32
police suspected there was more to
00:38:34
John's story they investigated his
00:38:38
background and discovered disturbing
00:38:40
allegations of previously abusing women
00:38:42
the next step was to determine whether
00:38:45
he had any connection to Kristen police
00:38:48
say that John met women largely through
00:38:51
personal ads come on there it is right
00:38:54
here I bet you this one did check it out
00:38:56
previously they had found an ad and
00:38:58
Kristen's apartment they think she might
00:39:00
have placed if you read it sounds like
00:39:04
it could be Kristen it'sit's all the
00:39:06
kind of things she was interested in it
00:39:08
was his photography walking the city
00:39:12
music art it was all the kind of things
00:39:16
that Kristen was there to do if the ad
00:39:21
had brought Kristen and John together a
00:39:24
baffling piece of the puzzle could now
00:39:26
be seen in a new light
00:39:28
John we were told used other women
00:39:32
to lure women to himself so we felt that
00:39:37
perhaps this blonde woman could have
00:39:39
been a plant to draw Kristin to this
00:39:43
John the police uncovered more troubling
00:39:48
pieces of information from the women
00:39:50
John allegedly abused one of them
00:39:53
claimed he made an alarming reference to
00:39:55
Kristin now you even know what I did to
00:39:59
Kristin it's what makes me do it to you
00:40:01
I never made a statement like that John
00:40:06
agreed to do an interview with us on
00:40:08
condition that we not reveal his face
00:40:10
and alter his voice the reason she made
00:40:12
that statement she was angry that I was
00:40:14
leaving San Francisco I was leaving her
00:40:17
and I wonder anymore
00:40:20
she's very angry very bitter one more
00:40:25
troubling coincidence was discovered at
00:40:27
the home of John's girlfriend her diary
00:40:29
was missing several pages pages covering
00:40:32
the same time period Kristen had been in
00:40:35
San Francisco we asked her why is this
00:40:40
the way it is and she told us that John
00:40:45
had torn the pages out and said that
00:40:48
some of the stuff that was in there
00:40:49
could come back to hurt him despite such
00:40:55
disturbing pieces of information police
00:40:58
say they have no clear evidence that
00:40:59
John had any involvement in Kristin's
00:41:01
disappearance also John says he has
00:41:04
taken and passed a polygraph examination
00:41:06
conducted by a reputable expert at the
00:41:10
very least this John made a stupid
00:41:13
stupid mistake by making this phone call
00:41:17
to the TV station but if he is more
00:41:21
involved then we still need to find out
00:41:23
those answers and we still need to keep
