The episode begins with the context of Grapevine, known as the Christmas capital of Texas, and the shocking 911 call made on December 25, 2011. The call was difficult to understand, leading police to respond to a seemingly quiet scene.

Upon entering the apartment, first responders discovered multiple victims, including children and adults, all shot while celebrating Christmas. The investigation revealed that the shooter was Aziz Yasta, the estranged husband of one of the victims, who was found dead in a Santa costume.

Details about the victims' relationships are discussed, highlighting the family dynamics and tensions that may have contributed to the tragedy. The episode also examines the investigation's challenges, including the lack of witnesses and the need to piece together evidence.

00:02:52
earlier in the in the morning but she
00:02:53
didn't text back um and that wasn't
00:02:56
really out of the ordinary just because

you know it's Christmas

00:03:21
um
00:03:22
and that was like one of the weirdest
00:03:25
conversations I've ever had just because
00:03:28
I understood all the work words that he
00:03:30
was telling me but like my brain did not
00:03:33
want to like believe it and so like I
00:03:37
remember be like wait a minute so like
00:03:39
how like is our
00:03:44
okay I remember like yesterday we got
00:03:48
the 911 call around 11:30 great by 911
00:03:52
where is your
00:03:54
emergency hello great F
00:03:57
911 you need help 911 calls come
00:04:01
throughout it's it's normal business if
00:04:03
you will and police work uh it doesn't
00:04:05
matter what day of the week or if it is
00:04:07
a holiday what was unusual about this
00:04:09
particular call is this was a whispering
00:04:12
voice and was hard to understand what
00:04:15
they were trying to
00:04:19
say you need
00:04:22
help are you
00:04:26
sick what was that
00:04:29
do you need an ambulance or
00:04:33
police
00:04:35
hello this was a landline call so the
00:04:38
address would populate when the call was
00:04:40
made into the 911 Center we want to make
00:04:43
sure that there is not an emergency and
00:04:45
the people are safe so the officers
00:04:47
responded
00:04:50
accordingly the call was very eerie it
00:04:54
was difficult to hear and understand
00:04:57
what the caller was saying
00:05:00
so the police responding were going
00:05:03
blindly because they didn't have
00:05:06
information as to what was going
00:05:10
on so when the officers arrived at the
00:05:12
scene it was extremely quiet they didn't
00:05:15
hear anything that's what you do the in
00:05:17
the entire time you're approaching the
00:05:20
origin of the call you're evaluating
00:05:22
what you're seeing hearing smelling and
00:05:25
in this case there was nothing so they
00:05:27
went to the door
00:05:29
they knocked on the
00:05:31
door again no
00:05:35
response they probably didn't think that
00:05:38
it was going to be a serious ordeal
00:05:40
because this is a very safe community
00:05:42
and it's Christmas
00:05:44
Day the officer took it upon himself to
00:05:47
peer into the windows to see if he could
00:05:50
see anything and when he did that he did
00:05:52
see a pair of legs lying on the ground
00:05:56
not
00:05:57
moving he actually went to another
00:06:00
window to see a different View and he
00:06:02
actually saw more people in the same
00:06:05
position lying on the floor without any
00:06:09
movement they request permission to
00:06:11
breach entry uh force entry because it's
00:06:14
without a search warant but it's Exogen
00:06:17
circumstances so that emergency allows
00:06:19
the officers to enter into that
00:06:22
apartment that's what they
00:06:25
did it didn't take long to determine
00:06:29
what they had at
00:06:31
hand when First Responders open the door
00:06:34
they're caught completely off guard by a
00:06:37
shocking scene amongst the backdrop of
00:06:40
holiday cheer are multiple dead bodies
00:06:44
that appear to have been shot while
00:06:47
opening their presents on Christmas
00:06:51
morning two middle-aged
00:06:54
females a young female in her 20s one in
00:06:57
her late teens a young man about 14
00:07:00
years old and two middle-age
00:07:04
males they had pretty good idea that the
00:07:09
shooter was in the apartment because
00:07:10
they had to breach the apartment and get
00:07:12
inside First Responders immediately
00:07:15
check for signs of Life they sweep the
00:07:18
other rooms to determine if there's an
00:07:20
active shooter or any other victims
00:07:22
inside the home once the scene is
00:07:25
cleared they notify headquarters and the
00:07:28
entire great VI Police Department is put
00:07:31
on
00:07:37
alert it appeared uh from the officers
00:07:41
that were there at the scene what they
00:07:43
described was that the Christmas gifts
00:07:45
had already been
00:07:47
open prior to the
00:07:49
shooting then the first responder spot
00:07:52
something that almost makes their hearts
00:07:56
stop someone everyone knows and loves
00:08:01
lying prone on the
00:08:06
floor he's dressed as Santa and only he
00:08:11
knows why he chose that could it be
00:08:15
simply because he wanted to put the
00:08:16
family at
00:08:19
ease or could it be that the person
00:08:22
dressed as the symbol of Christmas was
00:08:24
in fact evil in disguise
00:08:27
[Music]
00:08:35
Great Vine Texas
00:08:36
2011 nowhere in the entire lonar state
00:08:40
is Christmas treated with such
00:08:43
enthusiasm so the Carnage that Grapevine
00:08:47
Texas police discover on Christmas Day
00:08:51
is even more
00:08:54
shocking Grapevine calls itself the
00:08:57
Christmas capital of the state
00:09:00
it's practically enshrined Christmas
00:09:02
cheer into the
00:09:05
law what occurred on Christmas the
00:09:07
morning is so painful to grasp anywhere
00:09:10
but perhaps here most of
00:09:14
all so in 2011 we opened our presence
00:09:19
early and I got a text from the city
00:09:22
manager that said our police department
00:09:25
and public servants were working a crime
00:09:28
scene they were apparently seven people
00:09:31
dead in the
00:09:35
apartment my first thought was no it
00:09:37
couldn't be not in gravine Texas we're a
00:09:40
safe City we never do have any thing
00:09:43
like
00:09:45
this it's a deep sadness you know seven
00:09:49
people killed on Christmas
00:09:51
Day how does that
00:09:55
happen the victims in the Grapevine
00:09:57
apartment look like their family members
00:09:59
is caught unawares by a shooter while
00:10:02
they open presents why would someone
00:10:06
want to annihilate an entire family on
00:10:09
what should be the happiest day of the
00:10:12
year the holidays for most people are a
00:10:16
joyous time of getting together and this
00:10:18
and that and even though those
00:10:19
individuals are looking forward to the
00:10:21
event and spending time with family it's
00:10:23
still stressful there's extra cooking
00:10:26
cleaning all of those things that go
00:10:27
along but for V vable individuals that
00:10:31
might not have support or might be going
00:10:33
through some kind of internal
00:10:37
conflict it might be the trigger that
00:10:39
pushes them over the edge to a violent
00:10:44
episode Great Vine police will not begin
00:10:46
to know a motive until they first
00:10:49
identify the
00:10:51
victims a forensic unit begins
00:10:54
processing the scene and officers start
00:10:56
knocking on doors
00:10:59
so when you have a crime scene like this
00:11:01
where uh you have seven deceased people
00:11:04
and Mak an identification is extremely
00:11:06
important because it kind of tells you
00:11:09
who belongs
00:11:13
where you canvas out that area and try
00:11:16
to find anybody that may have any type
00:11:18
of information related uh to the
00:11:23
crime so in cavas in the area to their
00:11:28
surprise they didn't find anybody that
00:11:30
heard any
00:11:33
gunshots usually you have a gunshot
00:11:36
whether it's one or multiple then you'll
00:11:38
receive numerous 911 calls but only one
00:11:42
person made a 911 call from that murder
00:11:45
scene finding out who made this call
00:11:47
would help them to determine what
00:11:49
happened on this Christmas
00:11:53
day they called dispatch and asked them
00:11:56
to call back the number that the 911 one
00:11:59
call came
00:12:01
from they heard a phone
00:12:07
ringing and it was located on the Cradle
00:12:10
inside of the
00:12:15
apartment it's possible that this call
00:12:18
was made by a victim that was hiding
00:12:21
from his or her as salent it's also
00:12:24
possible that this call was the last
00:12:27
communication from the
00:12:30
last living person amongst these seven
00:12:33
people Grapevine detectives discover the
00:12:35
landline belongs to a woman named Fatima
00:12:38
nasin ramti who leases the
00:12:42
apartment in this case we were fortunate
00:12:45
that we were able to get most of the
00:12:46
names from driver's licenses that were
00:12:50
either on them or nearby and from there
00:12:54
we pulled their driver's license photos
00:12:56
from a database and compared them to the
00:12:58
people we had there at the
00:13:00
scene acuren is a subscriber database
00:13:04
that is used in investigations regularly
00:13:07
because it not only identifies members
00:13:09
of the household but potential relatives
00:13:12
and from that information we can uh make
00:13:14
a pretty good
00:13:16
determination we knew three of those
00:13:19
people lived in that
00:13:20
apartment we determined that uh it was a
00:13:23
mother a teenage daughter and a
00:13:26
14-year-old
00:13:28
son Fatima has two children a boy Ali
00:13:32
and a beautiful daughter 19-year-old
00:13:35
Nona my name is Katherine an Coronado
00:13:39
and I was uh one of Nona's High School
00:13:42
best
00:13:43
friends I was a sophomore going into a
00:13:46
new school new area didn't know anybody
00:13:49
and I will never forget that this girl
00:13:53
with long black hair walked right up to
00:13:56
me and she said hi my name name is Nona
00:13:59
you don't know me and I just want to
00:14:02
tell you you are so pretty can we be
00:14:05
friends Nona was such a free-spirited
00:14:09
person and she was very
00:14:11
sociable she still didn't know what she
00:14:13
wanted to do she just wanted to get into
00:14:15
college she just wanted to help her
00:14:18
family she loved her
00:14:23
family police ID the victims who
00:14:26
actually live in the home but who are
00:14:28
the others
00:14:31
we had three other people that had a
00:14:33
common address in Irving Texas uh so
00:14:37
clearly they did not live there we
00:14:40
determined from their information the
00:14:42
three that lived in Irving that it was a
00:14:45
mother father and a
00:14:48
daughter the daughter is SAR zor Vivian
00:14:52
to's friend so SAR and I met in college
00:14:57
she was majoring in biology um she
00:15:00
wanted to become a medical doctor she
00:15:03
was always super caring and um you know
00:15:06
just wanted to make things better in
00:15:07
general for everyone you know and so
00:15:09
that was um a big reason why she was
00:15:12
drawn to that
00:15:14
occupation she was very warm to everyone
00:15:16
that she met super super generous her
00:15:20
and her family as
00:15:21
well SAR was close with her family in
00:15:24
general she had a big family um a lot of
00:15:26
cousins aunts uncles and it was just
00:15:29
everyone just just all like one big
00:15:31
happy group know's mother Fatima is the
00:15:35
sister of Sara's mother
00:15:38
Zera the middle-aged female that lived
00:15:43
in Irving was the sister to the person
00:15:47
that resided in the apartment police
00:15:50
approached the last body lying on the
00:15:52
floor dressed in a Santa
00:15:55
costume they see a cell phone did Santa
00:16:00
try to call
00:16:04
911 uh phone was located it was on the
00:16:07
ground in fact the battery cover had
00:16:10
come off as if it had been dropped but
00:16:12
it was located next to the individual in
00:16:14
the Santa
00:16:16
Su and then they see something very
00:16:20
alarming Santa has a
00:16:24
gun this is shocking it's possible that
00:16:28
he was trying trying to defend himself
00:16:30
from the as salent or could it be that
00:16:33
this was the murder
00:16:35
weapon he was wearing a Santa Claus
00:16:39
costume you know that is a you could
00:16:42
call it a splashy detail but it's also a
00:16:46
tragic detail considering the
00:16:47
circumstances two Santa left is SAR
00:16:50
zor's father in his hand another
00:16:54
confusing detail to add to the crime
00:16:57
scene
00:16:59
to the shock of the investigators a man
00:17:01
to the left of Santa in an easy chair
00:17:04
also has a weapon he's holding a Smith
00:17:07
and Wesson
00:17:08
handgun seeing two firearms in plain
00:17:12
view well the officers would have had to
00:17:15
try to determine are these the weapons
00:17:19
involved two men each holding guns it
00:17:24
begs the question is one of them the
00:17:26
Killer and one the victim
00:17:33
instead of celebrating Christmas with
00:17:35
their families detectives in Grapevine
00:17:37
Texas are investigating a tragic
00:17:40
Christmas morning murder scene police
00:17:43
have identified two families connected
00:17:45
by two sisters who are targeted
00:17:48
Christmas morning
00:17:53
2011 the yasan panaz and the zores are
00:17:57
originally from Iran on but they're
00:17:59
Americans now and they have embraced
00:18:02
Christmas
00:18:04
traditions to go into any scene
00:18:08
especially on a Christmas Day and to see
00:18:11
seven people
00:18:13
deceased it's it's
00:18:15
unimaginable and to have somebody in a
00:18:18
Santa
00:18:19
suit and seeing two firearms in plain
00:18:24
view you just can't connect those kind
00:18:26
of dots it's a highly IR rational
00:18:29
situation and
00:18:32
scene police must now identify victim
00:18:36
number seven a man dressed as
00:18:40
Santa you evaluate the scene when you
00:18:43
get there to see if there may be
00:18:45
anything related to your crime scene and
00:18:48
of course vehicles are not unusual in
00:18:51
this case there was a white Toyota
00:18:54
4Runner in running the registration we
00:18:57
were able to determine that the person
00:18:59
in the Santa suit also appeared to be
00:19:01
the same registered owner to the Toyota
00:19:04
Forerunner we were able to determine the
00:19:06
identity as the person in the Santa suit
00:19:09
as Aziz
00:19:12
yasta he is the estranged husband of
00:19:16
Fatima who's leasing the apartment and
00:19:19
he's also the father of her two
00:19:22
[Music]
00:19:27
children the other person that was at
00:19:29
the scene with the pistol was identified
00:19:33
as the brother-in-law of Aziz as
00:19:36
Muhammad two brothers-in-law azis and
00:19:40
Muhammad both dead and both have guns in
00:19:44
their
00:19:45
hands they have to evaluate the scene to
00:19:47
figure out who shot who uh how they were
00:19:51
shot where they were shot
00:19:54
from and there's another confounding
00:19:57
detail
00:19:59
Specialists noticed that the blinds had
00:20:02
been moved or
00:20:04
changed when he opened the blinds he
00:20:07
realized there was blood spatter on the
00:20:09
outside of the blinds and clearly the
00:20:11
shooting had taken place inside the
00:20:13
apartment and then also the wand that
00:20:17
you used to manipulate the blinds to
00:20:19
open and close had blood on one side but
00:20:22
not the others so we concluded that
00:20:25
somebody inside of the
00:20:27
apartment after after the shooting had
00:20:30
closed the blinds for Grapevine
00:20:33
detectives this presents another
00:20:35
possible scenario perhaps Muhammad and
00:20:38
Aziz were defending their family from
00:20:41
someone else someone that fled the
00:20:46
scene we knew immediately that this was
00:20:49
you know Uncharted Territory not only
00:20:51
for the police department but for the
00:20:54
citizens of of gravon to have to learn
00:20:57
that this happened in their their City
00:20:59
you could tell that they were still
00:21:01
gathered in that area where they were
00:21:02
celebrating Christmas um it didn't
00:21:05
appear that you know there was any type
00:21:07
of struggle I think they were uh
00:21:12
surprised I don't think at that point I
00:21:14
released a lot of
00:21:16
information I believe I just gave them
00:21:18
the amount of
00:21:20
victims that's a number that jumps out
00:21:23
that's not normal that's not normal
00:21:25
anywhere that's not normal on Christmas
00:21:28
Day
00:21:29
anywhere a Christmas Day tragedy in
00:21:31
Texas Four Women and three men were
00:21:33
found shot to death in their home
00:21:34
Apparently after opening their Christmas
00:21:37
gifts in 2011 I was a news reporter for
00:21:40
kxas the NBC affiliate television
00:21:43
station here in Dallas
00:21:46
Forth I'd gotten a phone call from a
00:21:50
news manager some of the details of
00:21:52
course weren't yet to to fully come out
00:21:54
yet but there wasn't any question as to
00:21:57
what the story of the day was going to
00:21:59
uh it's still early in this
00:22:00
investigation obviously though this did
00:22:02
play out some almost 24 hours ago no
00:22:05
there is no known motive at least as one
00:22:06
that police are telling us about I think
00:22:09
it was the largest Christmas massacre in
00:22:12
the history of this country at that time
00:22:15
I couldn't imagine what our uh police
00:22:18
and uh paramedics were having to deal
00:22:21
with in the crime scene like that it it
00:22:24
became a national story uh really
00:22:27
quick it's the chilling sound of near
00:22:30
silence on the other end of a 911 call
00:22:32
not long after that police in Grapevine
00:22:35
Texas near Dallas found seven bodies in
00:22:38
an
00:22:39
apartment it wasn't long after that that
00:22:42
it I was getting calls uh
00:22:45
nonstop and that included International
00:22:48
media I was receiving calls as far as
00:22:50
away as Australia I had certainly
00:22:53
Amplified uh given the fact that it is
00:22:55
Christmas today and I think you know I
00:22:57
can speak saf for the rest of the police
00:22:59
department I don't think any members of
00:23:01
the police department has encountered
00:23:02
something like this on Christmas
00:23:04
Day the murders continue to grab
00:23:08
worldwide attention as investigators try
00:23:10
to learn exactly what
00:23:14
happened but you can't commit yourself
00:23:18
to whatever your theory is you you have
00:23:21
to prove that by the evidence at hand
00:23:24
painstakingly piece by piece piece of
00:23:27
information by piece of information to
00:23:30
determine in your best ability what
00:23:33
exactly
00:23:35
happened the
00:23:37
investigators relied on the cell phone
00:23:40
information from the victims to really
00:23:43
nail down the time that this crime
00:23:46
occurred we were fortunate in the sense
00:23:49
that we had phones and they have dat and
00:23:52
time
00:23:53
stamps detectives use the cell phone
00:23:56
data to determine that Zara sent a text
00:23:59
message at 11:15 a.m. on Christmas Day
00:24:03
the 911 call came in at 11:34 a.m. and
00:24:08
so it's determined that the time frame
00:24:11
between 11:15 and
00:24:13
11:34 was when this massacre
00:24:17
occurred Sara's text reveals nothing to
00:24:20
explain how or why the shooting occurs
00:24:23
just minutes
00:24:25
later investigators immediately Reach
00:24:28
Out to people who receive text or phone
00:24:30
calls from the
00:24:33
victims that 14-year-old boy just 12
00:24:36
minutes before he was killed called a
00:24:38
friend and wished him Merry Christmas so
00:24:41
he was relaxed and he thought everything
00:24:43
was
00:24:44
well 12 minutes later he's
00:24:48
dead police speak to Ali's friend he
00:24:52
says there's nothing strange about this
00:24:54
family alli's parents are separated but
00:24:57
that's not unusual
00:24:58
the boy's father has only good things to
00:25:01
say about aiz one of the nicest guys I'd
00:25:05
ever met he was one of those that
00:25:08
enjoyed buying drinks or dinner for his
00:25:11
friends we had several sources that we
00:25:14
spoke with the refer to asase as a
00:25:16
nonviolent
00:25:19
person the same goes for sora's Dad
00:25:22
Muhammad no one can imagine him ever
00:25:25
being
00:25:26
violent her parents were
00:25:31
like like the best people
00:25:33
ever they often had a lot of events like
00:25:36
at their house they made me feel so
00:25:40
welcomed which is why they're so loved
00:25:43
by the
00:25:44
community then police learn about Nona's
00:25:49
[Music]
00:25:50
boyfriend he was a little bit of an
00:25:52
older guy he was you know unfortunately
00:25:55
a a high school dropout but you know
00:25:58
She always told me like he did care
00:26:00
about her a
00:26:03
lot what we learned from the daughter's
00:26:07
closest friend she was able to share
00:26:09
that she did not like this boyfriend she
00:26:12
always felt like they were always
00:26:13
arguing about something I always told
00:26:16
her she could do so much better I'm like
00:26:17
you have so much more potential but you
00:26:19
know if this is somebody you you really
00:26:21
you know want to enjoy then you know be
00:26:24
your boyfriend then so be
00:26:26
it and he also didn't get along with
00:26:29
Nona's
00:26:30
[Music]
00:26:32
dad Nona's boyfriend had once been
00:26:35
arrested and detectives learned that
00:26:38
she's actually the one who bonded him
00:26:40
out this is concerning because given his
00:26:43
background it's possible that he could
00:26:45
be a suspect in this
00:26:49
case I think that that played a a big
00:26:52
part in a lot of the the
00:26:56
drama at this point Point investigators
00:26:59
are thinking is known as boyfriend the
00:27:01
key to this horrendous
00:27:04
crime is he the one who closes the
00:27:07
blinds after murdering seven
00:27:13
[Music]
00:27:18
people investigators in great Bine Texas
00:27:20
are dealing with a shocking tragedy
00:27:23
Christmas Day
00:27:25
2011 seven people shot dead including
00:27:30
one man dressed as Santa news agencies
00:27:34
around the world pick up the story
00:27:36
police are under pressure to come up
00:27:38
with
00:27:39
answers the boyfriend was interviewed
00:27:42
and he provided
00:27:44
some important information for Christmas
00:27:48
he had a pretty good Alibi we looked
00:27:51
into uh his his information and what we
00:27:55
were able to determine is he was with
00:27:57
two friends at the
00:27:58
apartment um and in fact there were text
00:28:02
messages where he was trying to reach
00:28:04
out and trying to contact
00:28:06
Nona police also learned Nona and her
00:28:10
father Aziz the victim dressed as Santa
00:28:13
have argued since she was a teen
00:28:16
girl when she was in high school the the
00:28:19
father put up security cameras and would
00:28:21
even board her door at night just to
00:28:24
keep her from sneaking out so clearly
00:28:26
there was issues there with following
00:28:28
her parents' wishes but Aziz does not
00:28:33
hold himself to the same standards he
00:28:35
expects of his
00:28:37
daughter although Aziz had high
00:28:39
expectations for his family he did not
00:28:42
live up to these expectations
00:28:45
himself it was learned that he had a
00:28:48
history of picking up prostitutes and
00:28:51
this is something that was very much
00:28:53
against his belief system
00:28:58
a friend of aiz shared information that
00:29:00
indicated that Muhammad and his ziz
00:29:02
would get together reportedly to go on
00:29:05
Hunting our fishing trips when in fact
00:29:08
they were going to hotels and meeting
00:29:11
with
00:29:13
prostitutes he believes the
00:29:15
brother-in-law Muhammad had shared that
00:29:18
with his wife regarding Aziz doing these
00:29:21
activities but he didn't reveal his
00:29:24
participation and that caused a big riff
00:29:26
between him and aiz
00:29:32
what we found out about aiz is at one
00:29:35
point in time he was a very successful
00:29:37
businessman he lost his livelihood when
00:29:40
there was an embargo placed on his
00:29:44
country origin which was Iran and
00:29:47
because he could
00:29:49
not import goods from his country and
00:29:53
that's how he uh was a successful
00:29:56
businessman was selling these uh
00:29:58
artifacts and items from Iran he lost
00:30:01
his entire
00:30:02
business he did try to work at other
00:30:06
businesses I believe real estate was one
00:30:08
of those that He attempted to make a go
00:30:11
at it and he just was not
00:30:14
successful so his wife and his family
00:30:18
suffered financially because of his
00:30:22
situation non started looking for a job
00:30:25
she was working at a bakery for a little
00:30:26
bit then she moved to working at a
00:30:28
restaurant she was just doing everything
00:30:30
she could to just save up money for
00:30:32
herself but also to help her
00:30:34
mom a FMA appeared to be a very proud
00:30:38
woman a woman who dearly loved her
00:30:41
children and but she was also in a
00:30:44
difficult
00:30:45
place again being proud she just
00:30:47
couldn't stay with disease anymore and
00:30:50
that's why she moved
00:30:52
out finally the medical examiner's
00:30:55
report comes back it tells investig ERS
00:30:58
a lot revealing how each victim is
00:31:02
shot when you look at how these
00:31:06
individuals have been murdered it's
00:31:08
personal they've been shot in the
00:31:12
head aziz's family has been shot in the
00:31:16
head one time execution style the niece
00:31:21
shot in the
00:31:24
head however there are two of them that
00:31:27
stand stand out in the manner and the
00:31:30
amount of times that they were
00:31:32
shot zor and her husband Mohammad have
00:31:36
both been shot three times compared to
00:31:39
all the other victims that were shot one
00:31:42
time zor was shot three times in the
00:31:46
head her husband was shot once in the
00:31:49
head which is consistent with the other
00:31:51
victims but then he was also shot twice
00:31:53
in the abdominal area
00:31:59
and why why are they different why were
00:32:02
they killed in another manner it's a
00:32:04
question that stands out that needs to
00:32:06
be
00:32:08
answered the postmortem of course does
00:32:10
not reveal a motive behind the murders
00:32:12
but it confirms something else
00:32:15
detectives already
00:32:19
suspect the medical examiner information
00:32:22
revealed that one of the victims died
00:32:25
from self-inflicted gunshot
00:32:29
the person that was in the Santa suit
00:32:32
had committed
00:32:35
suicide aiz
00:32:41
yasta on this case it's my opinion that
00:32:48
Aziz is a family
00:32:51
Annihilator family Annihilation is not a
00:32:55
common event how
00:32:58
however it is the most common form still
00:33:01
of mass shootings within the United
00:33:03
States we don't tend to hear about it as
00:33:08
often as it occurs and it isn't until we
00:33:12
get to a case like this one where there
00:33:14
are so many victims that it actually
00:33:17
makes the news it happened Christmas day
00:33:20
in the state of Texas tonight Brandon
00:33:22
Todd explains how the holiday quickly
00:33:24
turned into a nightmare for this family
00:33:27
there's a final twist revealed in that
00:33:30
medical examiner's report a Twist that
00:33:32
shows how Aziz tries to implicate his
00:33:36
own brother-in-law in the
00:33:39
murders this uh particular scene was
00:33:42
highly unusual in the sense that I've
00:33:44
never seen a stag crime scene of a
00:33:47
violent
00:33:48
[Music]
00:33:50
nature they've had these 911 tapes
00:33:52
they've been going over and over and
00:33:54
over them trying to listen and hear
00:33:56
what's on there because the voice on
00:33:57
there is very faint they needed
00:34:00
additional software brought in to
00:34:02
identify exactly what he was saying
00:34:04
they've been able to do that now we're
00:34:06
going to play it for you so you can hear
00:34:07
it for yourself you need
00:34:10
[Music]
00:34:12
help are you
00:34:15
sick what was
00:34:19
that apparently yes Dum was trying to
00:34:23
cover up this crime and make it look
00:34:25
like it was a shootout there that his
00:34:27
brother-in-law perhaps was responsible
00:34:29
for these
00:34:31
murders in this case placing a pistol in
00:34:35
Muhammad's
00:34:37
hand he had a pistol in his right hand
00:34:41
but he did not have the indications that
00:34:45
he would have been a shooter based on
00:34:48
his injuries based on the blood
00:34:52
spatter there's also the pistol had um
00:34:57
Blood on the handle that was not
00:34:59
consistent with the the blood that was
00:35:03
on Muhammad's
00:35:06
hand it is Aziz Blood on the handle and
00:35:10
Aziz bloody fingerprints on the
00:35:14
blinds when you have a scene it's if you
00:35:18
will connecting all the dots all the
00:35:20
dots you can if aiz
00:35:23
residents uh revealed information they
00:35:26
can tie them to those weapons
00:35:28
that's
00:35:29
important but also because we now know
00:35:32
that he committed
00:35:34
suicide it's not common but it's not
00:35:38
uncommon for people to leave a suicide
00:35:40
note and so that would be important too
00:35:43
and that's why we conducted the search
00:35:44
at the
00:35:51
residents no note was found uh regarding
00:35:54
his suicide at the residence
00:36:03
we did find numerous other indications
00:36:06
of Contraband if you will that tied them
00:36:08
to the pistols that were there holsters
00:36:13
ammunition and um also I believe we even
00:36:17
found receipts for two of the
00:36:19
weapons what most likely happened that
00:36:22
Christmas day is that Aziz showed up to
00:36:25
his family's celebration where ing a
00:36:27
Santa
00:36:29
costume his family probably thought that
00:36:32
he was just being in the Jolly mood and
00:36:35
maybe trying to make amends with his
00:36:38
estranged wife and his children however
00:36:41
in reality Aziz was most likely using
00:36:44
that costume to hide the two
00:36:53
weapons Great Vine Texas
00:36:55
2011 the iconic Christmas celebrations
00:36:58
in this Texas town are now marred by a
00:37:02
horrifying murder suicide the tightly
00:37:06
knit Community wants answers why did a
00:37:10
man named Aziz yasen P perpetrate such a
00:37:15
horrible
00:37:16
act this isn't a who done it it's a why
00:37:20
done it so I remember having a specific
00:37:21
conversation of wait he was okay he was
00:37:24
wearing a Santa Claus costume when he
00:37:27
killed his entire
00:37:29
family you know I'm a father you know I
00:37:34
I I know what a family gathering is like
00:37:36
I know what family Strife feels like I
00:37:39
know what bad feelings are
00:37:42
like
00:37:44
but what what person would ever consider
00:37:48
doing that
00:37:52
um even if you have all the facts we'll
00:37:54
never know we'll never get it
00:37:58
uh again the big question obviously is
00:38:00
the motive in this case perhaps it may
00:38:02
never be known we do expect to learn
00:38:04
more information from great B police
00:38:06
later this
00:38:08
morning anytime you have a homicide like
00:38:11
that you still investigate it like you
00:38:13
have a suspect that that you need to
00:38:16
make a case on to take to
00:38:18
trial knowing that what our detectives
00:38:21
did how many family members that they
00:38:23
spoke with friends a multitude of
00:38:26
friends and
00:38:27
just making sure that they were covering
00:38:29
the the bases and and trying to develop
00:38:33
something that was a plausible motive to
00:38:35
it and it took a long
00:38:39
time we learned that his sister-in-law
00:38:42
did not think highly of
00:38:44
aeas
00:38:46
she looked at him as a failure as a
00:38:50
provider for the
00:38:52
family and I think Aziz took that very
00:38:56
personal he he did not like his
00:39:00
sister-in-law at all she to me she came
00:39:03
across as a as a strong woman who's not
00:39:06
afraid to voice her opinion and that did
00:39:10
not set well with
00:39:15
diseas everyone was of the opinion that
00:39:19
aiz had it out for a
00:39:22
sister-in-law it was a a very strained
00:39:26
relationship she did not respect him and
00:39:29
many people eluded to this that he
00:39:32
seemed to blame her for everything that
00:39:36
was wrong in his
00:39:38
life then Aziz hears about the zere's
00:39:41
Christmas Eve party to which the entire
00:39:44
extended family is
00:39:46
invited except for
00:39:49
him one of the things that came out was
00:39:52
aiz felt slighted that he wasn't invited
00:39:55
to a Christmas party
00:39:57
that was held by his brother and
00:40:00
sister-in-law what was I think what
00:40:04
upset him more was previously at
00:40:06
Thanksgiving they had all been together
00:40:09
and they reportedly had a great family
00:40:11
gathering and I think they gave him some
00:40:13
false hope because then came Christmas
00:40:16
Eve big family party he was not invited
00:40:20
his family was there I I think he felt
00:40:23
not only offended but
00:40:26
slighted aziz's absence at the Christmas
00:40:29
party people would have noticed that
00:40:32
they're all very close-nit group and the
00:40:35
whole family was there except for the
00:40:37
husband and he just looked at this as
00:40:39
another step of interfering with his
00:40:42
relationship with his
00:40:45
family and from that came Christmas Day
00:40:48
the next
00:40:52
day the family had a plan that day he
00:40:57
had begged to attend uh Christmas day to
00:41:01
give his children
00:41:04
gifts the mother was not excited about
00:41:07
that so they came up with the plan that
00:41:09
they would have lunch he would show up
00:41:12
he would give them their gifts and then
00:41:14
they would have to leave to go attend
00:41:16
the Dallas Mavericks basketball
00:41:21
game he clearly had a
00:41:24
plan to do what he did
00:41:28
you don't just
00:41:29
take two
00:41:31
firearms and put them in a Santa suit
00:41:34
and go have lunch with your family and
00:41:36
then shoot
00:41:41
him he was at a deep dark place of
00:41:45
Despair and I I just think it it took
00:41:49
all rationale from him and he did what
00:41:51
he did because in his mind I feel like
00:41:54
he felt there was nothing else left to
00:41:56
do but exact
00:42:03
Revenge I want the world to remember and
00:42:07
those that did know Nona and her family
00:42:10
who they were and the light that They
00:42:13
Carried the light that she carried she
00:42:15
really carried her family in such a
00:42:18
positive
00:42:22
way it's
00:42:24
harsh
00:42:26
I I'm a very blessed person I've been
00:42:29
married to the love of my life for over
00:42:31
36 years we have two beautiful grown
00:42:33
children and to see a beautiful family
00:42:38
killed or two beautiful families killed
00:42:41
by an
00:42:42
individual uh it affected me
00:42:44
[Music]
00:42:52
deeply and a strange husband fueled by
00:42:55
anger and bent on on Revenge and all
00:42:59
added up to the Christmas spirit gone
00:43:01
horribly wrong for a family who wanted
00:43:04
only to embrace the warmest of
00:43:08
holidays I'm Nancy Grace thank you for
00:43:11
joining us here on the Christmas
00:43:13
killings
