Forensic Files - Season 5, Episode 2 - Dew Process - Full Episode

November 11, 2021 / 22:34

This episode covers the murder of Betty Wilsopher in 1986, the assault on her husband Glenn Wilsopher, and the subsequent investigation. Key topics include the relationship dynamics, forensic evidence, and the tragic death of Glenn's brother Neal.

Betty Wilsopher, a 32-year-old mother, was murdered in her home in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Her husband, Glenn, survived the attack but was later charged with her murder. The couple had a seemingly perfect life, but Glenn's infidelity complicated the narrative.

Neal Wilsopher, Glenn's younger brother, was the first to arrive at the crime scene. He later died in a suspicious accident, raising questions about his knowledge of the murder. Investigators found inconsistencies in Glenn's account of the events surrounding Betty's death.

Forensic evidence played a crucial role in the investigation. Analysts discovered fibers and hair samples linking Glenn to the crime scene, contradicting his claim of an intruder. The lack of blood on Betty's body suggested a staged crime scene.

Ultimately, Glenn was found guilty of third-degree murder and sentenced to prison. The episode highlights the impact of the crime on the community and the role of forensic science in solving the case.

TL;DR

The episode details the murder of Betty Wilsopher, her husband Glenn's infidelity, and the investigation leading to his conviction.

arrive at the scene

a few months later
00:00:33
neil wulcifer was dead too
00:00:36
some say because of what he learned

about the intruder

00:01:07
glenn and betty wilson had been married
00:01:10
for nine years it was the romance that
00:01:13
had begun 20 years earlier
00:01:15
the family both on betty site and on
00:01:18
glenn's side came from very well
00:01:19
established influential families within
00:01:22
the community
00:01:23
very well liked by all of the community
00:01:27
betty and glenn were childhood
00:01:28
sweethearts they went through high
00:01:30
school together
00:01:31
glenn wilsopher went on to dental school
00:01:34
later married betty and after graduation
00:01:37
the couple returned to their hometown of
00:01:39
wilkes-barre pennsylvania to set up
00:01:42
practice
00:01:43
the wolsifers bought a home on birch
00:01:45
street just a few houses away from
00:01:47
glenn's younger brother neal
00:01:50
the two brothers were unusually close
00:01:53
they were almost like twins
00:01:55
they very rarely did things apart they
00:01:57
were really big into sports and and
00:02:00
they they just grew up together like
00:02:02
that and they lived near each other and
00:02:05
they were inseparable he and his brother
00:02:07
and when glenn and betty gave birth to a
00:02:09
daughter danielle their life together
00:02:12
seemed perfect
00:02:14
but tragedy struck
00:02:16
on saturday morning august 30th 1986
00:02:20
just after dawn glenn wilsopher called
00:02:23
his younger brother neal telling him
00:02:25
that an intruder had broken into his
00:02:27
home
00:02:28
neal ran across the street to glenn's
00:02:30
home and when he saw that glenn had been
00:02:32
assaulted neal phoned police
00:02:38
when police arrived glenn wilsopher was
00:02:40
downstairs on the floor fading in and
00:02:43
out of consciousness
00:02:45
upstairs had been ransacked furniture
00:02:48
was overturned desk drawers emptied
00:02:52
one of the officers then went upstairs
00:02:53
found his daughter who was still
00:02:55
sleeping in her bedroom five-year-old
00:02:58
and then went into the
00:03:01
the wallsphere's bedroom and found betty
00:03:03
laying on the floor and she was dead at
00:03:05
that time
00:03:06
betty wilsopher's body was on the floor
00:03:09
next to the bed
00:03:10
there were abrasions around her neck and
00:03:12
her face showed signs of a severe
00:03:15
beating
00:03:16
it was obvious that it was a homicide
00:03:18
because of the marks around her neck and
00:03:20
and the uh
00:03:22
you can see it was a vicious attack upon
00:03:24
this woman
00:03:25
my father had told me
00:03:27
that that betty was murdered and they
00:03:29
were the specific words
00:03:33
how or what had happened i didn't know
00:03:36
but that just took me
00:03:37
totally by surprise of course
00:03:40
and
00:03:41
so many things go through your head you
00:03:43
just
00:03:44
you can't even sort them out
00:03:46
it appeared that the intruder climbed a
00:03:49
ladder to the roof over the back porch
00:03:51
and entered through a second story
00:03:53
window
00:03:54
the window screen had been removed and
00:03:56
placed on the roof
00:04:01
glenn wilsopher told police that he was
00:04:03
asleep when he heard a loud noise in the
00:04:05
back of his house around 6am
00:04:08
he said he grabbed his gun and saw a
00:04:10
masked intruder running down the stairs
00:04:12
and he followed him
00:04:15

[Music]
00:04:23
the intruder surprised him from behind
00:04:26
strangled him with a belt and knocked
00:04:28
him unconscious with a blow to his head
00:04:35
[Music]
00:04:37
sometime later when glenn regained
00:04:40
consciousness he phoned his brother
00:04:42
now it's me get over here
00:04:44
now come on things like that just didn't
00:04:47
happen in wilkes-barre
00:04:49
a very nice woman getting killed in her
00:04:51
own home did not make sense to a lot of
00:04:54
people
00:04:55
glenn wilsopher told police that
00:04:57
thirteen hundred dollars in cash was
00:04:59
missing from his desk in the study and
00:05:01
some gold and diamond jewelry and a
00:05:03
house key were also missing
00:05:06
but police noticed something suspicious
00:05:09
the phone in the kitchen was hanging off
00:05:12
the hook
00:05:13
police wondered if the victim's brother
00:05:16
neil had simply forgotten to hang up the
00:05:19
phone after calling police or
00:05:22
whether it was evidence of crime scene
00:05:25
staging
00:05:26
[Music]
00:05:30
the news of betty wolcifer's murder and
00:05:32
the assault on her husband glenn stunned
00:05:35
the small industrial community of
00:05:37
wiltsboro pennsylvania
00:05:39
dr glenn wilson was a successful dentist
00:05:42
in town his wife an active volunteer for
00:05:45
many local charities neither had any
00:05:48
known enemies
00:05:49
they were very popular couple everybody
00:05:52
knew them they were
00:05:55
the pretty couple
00:05:56
betty was very popular he was kind of
00:05:59
quiet type but still he was a jock good
00:06:03
looking and so for those reasons
00:06:05
everybody knew who both of them were
00:06:07
police acknowledged that there had been
00:06:09
a number of recent burglaries in the
00:06:11
wolfers neighborhood
00:06:13
since 1300 dollars in cash and some
00:06:16
jewelry was missing from the
00:06:17
woolsepher's home robbery was a possible
00:06:20
motive
00:06:21
it appeared that the intruder used a
00:06:23
ladder the wulcifer stored on the side
00:06:26
of their house to gain entrance through
00:06:28
an open second story window
00:06:31
a partial palm print was discovered on
00:06:33
the inside of the windowsill which did
00:06:36
not match anyone in the family or the
00:06:39
police
00:06:41
the autopsy on betty wilsopher was
00:06:43
performed by luzerne county coroner dr
00:06:46
george hudoc who found no evidence of
00:06:49
sexual assault
00:06:51
the cause of death was strangulation
00:06:54
which would take from three to five
00:06:56
minutes
00:06:57
during that time it was obvious to dr
00:06:59
hudak that there had been a fierce life
00:07:03
and death struggle i believe that she
00:07:05
really fought back with fury
00:07:08
and that she inflicted
00:07:10
some injuries on whoever has sailed her
00:07:12
blue fibers and a small speck of blood
00:07:15
found under betty's fingernails
00:07:17
confirmed that she had been in close
00:07:20
contact with her killer
00:07:22
but dr hudoc noticed something unusual
00:07:26
despite a severe beating there was no
00:07:29
blood on betty wilson's nightgown and
00:07:32
very little blood on her face that was
00:07:35
the outstanding thing that imprinted
00:07:37
itself on my brain when we saw the body
00:07:40
you didn't have to be a trained forensic
00:07:42
pathologist to recognize it there was
00:07:45
something suspicious there
00:07:47
all of the injuries to the mouth and the
00:07:48
neck and no blood on the face and no
00:07:51
blood on the clothing
00:07:53
it appeared that after killing betty
00:07:54
wilsopher the killer had washed her face
00:07:58
and changed her nightgown
00:08:00
police search for her bloody clothing in
00:08:02
the house the surrounding neighborhood
00:08:04
and the nearby susquehanna river without
00:08:07
success
00:08:08
since the body was lying in front of the
00:08:11
fan time of death was difficult to gauge
00:08:14
but dr hudoc estimated that betty
00:08:17
wulcifer had been murdered between 2 30
00:08:20
and 4 30 in the morning
00:08:22
two to four hours before glenn said he
00:08:26
heard the intruder and there was another
00:08:28
inconsistency
00:08:30
doctors at mercy hospital noticed
00:08:33
injuries on the back of glenn
00:08:35
wilsopher's neck even though he said he
00:08:37
was strangled from behind it doesn't
00:08:40
make any sense it just could not happen
00:08:42
that way the only way you could get that
00:08:44
entry to the back of your neck is
00:08:46
somebody pulled from the front
00:08:49
friends told investigators that glenn
00:08:52
often wore a gold chain around his neck
00:08:54
if he was involved with a fight with his
00:08:57
wife where his wife would have been
00:08:58
saying the bed underneath him and he was
00:09:01
on top of her in that position he would
00:09:02
have sustained those type of injuries
00:09:04
from that piece of jewelry
00:09:07
that type of force would have damaged
00:09:10
the spleenus capitus muscles two long
00:09:13
muscles which support the head the same
00:09:15
injury emergency room doctors diagnosed
00:09:18
in glenn wulcifer after his wife's
00:09:20
murder when investigators dug a little
00:09:24
deeper into glenn wilson's dental
00:09:26
practice they discovered his
00:09:28
relationship with his dental assistant
00:09:30
was more personal than business the two
00:09:33
had been carrying on an affair for five
00:09:35
years
00:09:36
she told investigators that she expected
00:09:39
glenn to leave his wife for her
00:09:42
but she realized that wouldn't happen
00:09:44
when she discovered that glenn was
00:09:46
carrying on another affair with an
00:09:48
aerobics instructor in town
00:09:51
from motel receipts police learned that
00:09:54
glenn would sometimes have trysts with
00:09:56
both women on the same day before going
00:10:00
home to his wife here was a man who not
00:10:03
only had an affair and cheated on his
00:10:05
wife but here was a man who had an
00:10:07
affair and cheated on his girlfriend at
00:10:10
the same time
00:10:11
and police wanted to know why glenn's
00:10:13
younger brother neal failed to go
00:10:16
upstairs to check on his brother's wife
00:10:18
and child while he waited for the police
00:10:20
to arrive
00:10:22
while on his way to the district
00:10:24
attorney's office to answer that very
00:10:27
question neil made a decision that would
00:10:31
change the course of the investigation
00:10:38
when homicide investigators learned that
00:10:40
betty wulcifer's body had been washed
00:10:43
and her clothes changed after the murder
00:10:46
they looked a little closer at the
00:10:47
statements glenn and his younger brother
00:10:49
neil both gave to police
00:10:54
on the night of the murder
00:10:56
glenn wilsopher said he was out with
00:10:58
friends at a local nightclub
00:11:00
and drove home around 2 30.
00:11:03
he said that he went right to bed and
00:11:05
slept until dawn when he heard the
00:11:07
intruder and went downstairs to
00:11:09
investigate
00:11:14
but the police video taken on the
00:11:16
morning of the murder shows that glenn
00:11:18
wilsopher's car in the driveway was not
00:11:21
covered with dew yet his wife's car was
00:11:26
to help sort out the discrepancy police
00:11:29
called in a forensic meteorologist dr
00:11:31
joseph sobel who studied the weather
00:11:34
patterns on the night of the murder
00:11:36
dew is moisture it's condensation that
00:11:39
actually forms on the object we're
00:11:41
talking about whether it be a blade of
00:11:43
grass or a rooftop or a car top or any
00:11:47
object that happens to be outside during
00:11:49
that time
00:11:51
the temperature on the afternoon of the
00:11:53
murder was 70 degrees so the dew point
00:11:57
temperature the point when water in the
00:11:59
air becomes cold enough to change from a
00:12:02
gas to a liquid producing dew would have
00:12:05
occurred when the temperature reached 50
00:12:07
degrees we know the night was clear
00:12:10
surface weather observations showed us
00:12:12
that
00:12:13
we know it was very cool so that the
00:12:15
temperature was able to drop
00:12:17
considerably and we know that there was
00:12:20
little or no wind
00:12:22
the temperature hit 50 degrees at 11 p.m
00:12:26
glenn wilsopher said he drove home at 2
00:12:29
30 in the morning yet there was no do on
00:12:32
his car when police arrived at 7 a.m
00:12:35
if he had driven home at 2 30 in the
00:12:38
morning glenn's car would have had the
00:12:41
same amount of dew as his wife's car
00:12:44
the lack of do meant that someone had
00:12:46
driven glenn wilsopher's car some time
00:12:49
after glenn returned home from the
00:12:51
nightclub at 2 30 and before police
00:12:54
arrived at 7 am evaporating the dew that
00:12:57
had been present
00:12:58
and the same dew points produced due on
00:13:00
the wilsapher's roof yet there were no
00:13:03
foot or handprints in the dew on the
00:13:05
roof when police arrived
00:13:08
when police looked more closely at the
00:13:10
ladder they discovered it had been
00:13:13
placed up to the roof backwards with the
00:13:16
steps facing in the opposite direction
00:13:20
the partial palm print found on the
00:13:22
windowsill could not be identified
00:13:25
potentially corroborating glenn's story
00:13:27
about an intruder
00:13:29
police were also investigating what
00:13:32
connection if any glenn's younger
00:13:34
brother neil may have had to the murder
00:13:36
he was the first one to arrive at the
00:13:38
scene and was the one that called the
00:13:41
police
00:13:43
but when police arrived the phone was
00:13:45
off the hook hanging from the wall unit
00:13:48
police were also suspicious of neil's
00:13:51
behavior he admitted that he did not go
00:13:54
upstairs to check on glenn's wife and
00:13:56
five-year-old daughter danielle before
00:13:59
police arrived
00:14:01
neil wolford denied any involvement in
00:14:04
the crime but when asked to take a lie
00:14:06
detector test he refused a lot of people
00:14:10
think that neil
00:14:12
knew everything
00:14:13
that when he came in the house that
00:14:16
glenn told him what happened and said
00:14:18
you have to help me we have to concoct a
00:14:21
story
00:14:22
there's people that even think that neil
00:14:24
may have been the one that knock glenn
00:14:27
on the head
00:14:28
then there's the other school that think
00:14:31
that neil suspected
00:14:33
and he just kept putting two and two
00:14:35
together
00:14:36
and things that
00:14:38
glenn may have said to him and just just
00:14:42
the very thought was too much for him to
00:14:43
bear
00:14:43
[Music]
00:14:45
neil was asked to report to the district
00:14:47
attorney's office for an interview
00:14:50
he went past the time and he was
00:14:52
supposed to arrive
00:14:54
and gary sworn left the room and he came
00:14:56
back in and
00:14:57
he says uh
00:15:00
the wilsonverse
00:15:02
dead
00:15:08
i was shocked
00:15:09
i was shocked
00:15:11
so we found out where the accident
00:15:13
occurred or
00:15:15
the incident occurred so he went up and
00:15:17
took a look at the scene
00:15:19
and it was gruesome he passed the
00:15:21
courthouse
00:15:22
he drove about another five miles and
00:15:25
that
00:15:26
his car swerved in front of a dump truck
00:15:28
and he was killed instantly
00:15:30
investigators could find no skid marks
00:15:34
it appeared that neil wulcifer
00:15:36
intentionally turned in front of an
00:15:38
oncoming truck the coroner ruled the
00:15:41
death of suicide
00:15:44
it made me feel sad the fact that
00:15:46
somebody was involved
00:15:49
with a crime
00:15:50
and because of guilt
00:15:53
some innocent person had to die
00:15:56
and
00:15:56
when you have the death of a person
00:15:58
there's always so many other people that
00:16:01
suffer
00:16:02
we know that
00:16:04
joy can be shared with others but how
00:16:06
grief
00:16:07
can only be endured alone
00:16:09
and what neil wulcifer may have known
00:16:12
about the murder
00:16:14
went with him to his grave
00:16:20
with dr glenn wilsopher as the prime
00:16:23
suspect in his wife's murder police
00:16:25
discovered that the all-american image
00:16:27
he presented to the public was just that
00:16:30
an image
00:16:32
before her death
00:16:34
betty wulcifer told friends that she
00:16:36
knew all about her husband's affairs
00:16:38
with the aerobics instructor and his
00:16:40
dental assistant and that she had had
00:16:43
enough
00:16:44
we found out from some of betty's
00:16:46
girlfriends that she was very annoyed
00:16:48
with some of these things that were
00:16:49
happening very annoyed with him going
00:16:51
out at nights and not coming in until
00:16:53
all hours of the morning and some of the
00:16:55
girlfriends even made comments to her
00:16:57
well maybe you should confront him maybe
00:16:59
he should ask him what's going on
00:17:01
to see if there was any evidence of a
00:17:03
physical confrontation between glenn and
00:17:06
his wife
00:17:07
fbi analyst doug dietrich analyzed the
00:17:10
debris under betty wilsopher's
00:17:12
fingernails
00:17:14
there he found a number of blue cotton
00:17:17
denim fibers
00:17:19
using micro spectrophotometry dietrich
00:17:22
analyzed a spectrum of color in the dye
00:17:25
of those fibers and concluded that the
00:17:27
dye was consistent with the dye used in
00:17:30
the denim shirt and jeans that glenn
00:17:32
wilsopher was seen wearing at the
00:17:34
nightclub just hours before his wife's
00:17:37
murder
00:17:39
finally diedrick analyzed several head
00:17:42
hairs on the bed spread next to betty
00:17:44
wolfer's body the hairs had been
00:17:47
forcibly removed and were compared to
00:17:49
hair samples from glenn wulcifer from
00:17:52
the laboratory standpoint the hairs that
00:17:54
were forcibly removed on the bedding
00:17:56
were consistent with the husband i
00:17:58
looked at other hairs that were
00:17:59
recovered from the bedding and from the
00:18:01
towels
00:18:02
and there were no hairs out of place i
00:18:05
mean the hairs that i found were
00:18:06
consistent with people that lived in
00:18:08
that house
00:18:10
on november 5th 1990
00:18:12
glenn wulcifer was charged with first
00:18:15
degree murder he pleaded not guilty
00:18:21
prosecutors stated that on the afternoon
00:18:23
before the murder glenn met his dental
00:18:25
assistant for a sexual encounter
00:18:27
[Applause]
00:18:29
a few hours later glenn saw his other
00:18:32
mistress at a local nightclub he may
00:18:35
have been hoping to have sex with her
00:18:36
too but her husband was there
00:18:42
glenn drove home around 2 30 in the
00:18:43
morning
00:18:45
and betty may have confronted glenn over
00:18:48
his sexual liaisons
00:18:50
what are you doing do you know what time
00:18:51
it is
00:18:53
the argument turned violent
00:18:57
as she fought for her life betty pulled
00:18:59
glenn's hair clutched and grabbed his
00:19:01
shirt and caused the injury to his neck
00:19:04
by forcibly pulling on his
00:19:08
jewelry after the murder glenn removed
00:19:12
his wife's bloody nightgown
00:19:14
and washed her body in what was probably
00:19:17
a psychological attempt to mask his
00:19:20
guilt over what had occurred
00:19:30
prosecutors believe that glenn used his
00:19:33
car to dispose of the bloody clothing
00:19:36
which evaporated the dew
00:19:42
when he returned he staged the crime
00:19:45
scene by placing the ladder up to the
00:19:46
back of his house
00:19:48
but he made a mistake and propped it up
00:19:51
backwards he also removed the window
00:19:53
screen and ransacked some of the rooms
00:19:58
the telephone receiver found off the
00:20:00
hook was either a mistake made during
00:20:01
the staging of the crime scene or neil
00:20:04
wulcifer simply forgot to hang up the
00:20:06
telephone after calling police
00:20:10
the jury had to choose between glenn
00:20:12
wilsopher's intruder story and the
00:20:14
circumstantial case put forward by
00:20:16
prosecutors
00:20:18
and amid the discrepancies in glenn
00:20:20
wilsopher's story
00:20:22
one fact stood out
00:20:24
after an alleged life and death struggle
00:20:26
with an intruder neither glenn or his
00:20:29
brother neil ever went upstairs to check
00:20:32
on betty wilsopher or five-year-old
00:20:34
danielle before the police arrived
00:20:38
glenn wilsopher was found guilty of
00:20:40
third degree murder and was sentenced to
00:20:44
eight to 20 years in prison
00:20:46
the death of my sister
00:20:48
it's the hurt on behalf of both families
00:20:54
very close friends and friends
00:20:56
and people in the community in general
00:20:59
that this one person is hurt
00:21:03
that's devastating that's
00:21:06
unbelievable
00:21:08
here's a guy who just cared about
00:21:09
himself
00:21:11
the only person that he ever cared about
00:21:13
was himself glenn was worried about
00:21:15
glenn and no one else and i think that
00:21:17
was shown by the verdict in this case
00:21:21
benjamin franklin once said
00:21:23
three may keep a secret if two of them
00:21:26
are dead
00:21:28
that might have been true in this case
00:21:30
had it not been for the role of science
00:21:34
and when i go out to talk to people
00:21:36
about forensic meteorology i always talk
00:21:38
about this case and i go through the
00:21:39
whole scenario and the setup and
00:21:43
and then i asked people okay so where's
00:21:45
the weather connection you know where
00:21:46
does weather become involved and usually
00:21:49
all i get is a set of blank stairs so to
00:21:51
think about that and to tie it in and
00:21:54
then to go get expert corroboration i
00:21:56
think was really a very very good piece
00:21:59
of police and detective work
