Forensic Files (HD) - Season 13, Episode 35 - Covet Thy Neighbour - Full Episode

March 05, 2021 / 21:15

This episode covers the disappearance and murder of Olamide Adeyoye, a college student at Illinois State University. Key discussions include the investigation into her abduction, the discovery of her body, and the eventual arrest of Maurice Wallace.

Olamide was last seen when she failed to show up for work one Friday night. Her apartment showed signs of a struggle, with blood stains and her belongings left behind. Friends and family were concerned as the search for her continued.

Investigators found a connection to a barn fire in Mississippi where a body was discovered. Forensic evidence, including dental records, confirmed the remains belonged to Olamide. The cause of death was determined to be exsanguination.

Several suspects were considered, including her date Bartis Partice and former boyfriend Andy Foley, both of whom had alibis. The focus shifted to Maurice Wallace, a neighbor with a criminal history and a troubling attitude towards women.

Wallace was eventually arrested after his fingerprint matched evidence found in Olamide's apartment. He was charged with first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, with the case highlighting the importance of forensic science in solving crimes.

TL;DR

Olamide Adeyoye, a college student, was murdered by neighbor Maurice Wallace after her disappearance sparked a widespread investigation.

00:00:07
without a trace the television was still
00:00:09
on
00:00:10
it was almost as if her activities had
00:00:12
been interrupted it's just really scary
00:00:14
to think about that it happens here
00:00:16
her fellow students prayed for her safe
00:00:18
return
00:00:19
police feared her abductor might be
00:00:21
among them
00:00:22
everybody was a suspect but we had no
00:00:24
direction to go eventually the trail led
00:00:26
to a barn fire
00:00:28
hundreds of miles away a senseless
00:00:31
murder
00:00:32
with no motive
00:00:42
science played a big part in olamide
00:00:45
adeyoye's life
00:00:47
ever since she was a little girl she
00:00:49
dreamt of a career
00:00:51
in medical research and she was halfway
00:00:54
there
00:00:55
entering her senior year at illinois
00:00:57
state university
00:00:59
olamide likes science a lot i could
00:01:01
definitely see her going into the
00:01:03
forensic field working in a laboratory
00:01:05
doing dna analysis
00:01:08
olamide worked her way through school as
00:01:10
a waitress friday nights were usually
00:01:13
the busiest
00:01:14
so it was unusual when olamide didn't
00:01:17
show up one friday when she was
00:01:18
scheduled
00:01:20
the next day she didn't answer repeated
00:01:23
calls to her apartment and cell phone
00:01:26
her friends and family began to become
00:01:28
more worried about
00:01:29
olamide not being able to get a hold of
00:01:32
her
00:01:33
olamide's car was gone her apartment
00:01:36
locked when police entered olamide's
00:01:40
apartment
00:01:41
they discovered her purse and her wallet
00:01:44
were there
00:01:44
her cell phone was on the sofa with more
00:01:46
than 60
00:01:48
unanswered messages the television was
00:01:50
on
00:01:52
it looked as if she had just gotten up
00:01:54
and left
00:01:56
until police entered her bedroom
00:01:59
the search revealed large pile of
00:02:01
clothing on
00:02:02
the bedroom floor when we systematically
00:02:05
went through
00:02:05
each piece of clothing we began to see
00:02:08
stains of bleach the odor of bleach
00:02:12
leads all of us to believe that someone
00:02:13
is trying to cover up or clean up
00:02:15
a crime underneath the clothing
00:02:18
was a large blood stain the blood
00:02:22
was tested at that time and it wasn't
00:02:24
ultimately identified back to olamide
00:02:26
they also found a blood trail leading
00:02:29
outside
00:02:31
there were blood drops down the back
00:02:32
porch down the back steps
00:02:35
down across the parking lot ending about
00:02:38
a foot
00:02:38
from where the trunk of olamide's car
00:02:41
would have been
00:02:45
someone could have silently carried her
00:02:47
down the stairs and placed her in a
00:02:48
vehicle in the darkness
00:02:50
although olamide lived in an apartment
00:02:52
off campus
00:02:53
her disappearance struck fear among the
00:02:56
students
00:02:57
you're a young female walking around
00:02:59
campus i have a night class so
00:03:01
usually when i get out of school i walk
00:03:03
home and it's just really scary to think
00:03:05
about that it happens here
00:03:07
missing posters were put all over campus
00:03:10
and the surrounding community
00:03:13
days went by but there was still
00:03:16
no sign of olamide i'm trying to do
00:03:19
everything i can i mean i know she'd be
00:03:20
doing the same thing for me
00:03:22
as the search entered its second week
00:03:26
investigators got a potential break from
00:03:28
a small
00:03:29
town 700 miles away
00:03:32
a police officer in mississippi had
00:03:35
heard about
00:03:36
olamide and her disappearance by the
00:03:38
news media
00:03:40
he told illinois police about a body
00:03:42
they'd found
00:03:43
after a recent barn fire they had in
00:03:46
mississippi
00:03:48
the fire was an arson and all they knew
00:03:51
was
00:03:51
that the victim was a young female
00:03:55
police were able to get the dental
00:03:56
records of olamide from her family
00:03:58
dentist
00:03:59
the records along with the remains were
00:04:01
taken to a
00:04:03
forensic odentologist and he was able to
00:04:05
positively
00:04:06
identify the remains as olamide it
00:04:09
probably is the worst feeling i've ever
00:04:10
felt
00:04:11
i felt horrible for her mother i feel
00:04:13
horrible for her brother
00:04:14
it blows my mind for someone to think
00:04:17
that they can kind of play god
00:04:19
and take someone else's life
00:04:22
investigators now wondered
00:04:24
who killed olamide and why
00:04:27
he took her to mississippi
00:04:29
[Music]
00:04:35
students and faculty of illinois state
00:04:38
university
00:04:39
gathered on campus to remember olamide
00:04:42
adeyoye
00:04:43
she pushed people to be their best she
00:04:45
wanted everyone to be their best
00:04:47
including herself
00:04:48
her family was understandably frustrated
00:04:51
not knowing
00:04:52
who was responsible or why when you
00:04:56
think of olamide
00:04:58
remember the young beautiful woman
00:05:02
who had a hunger for knowledge
00:05:05
intelligence and who wanted to help
00:05:08
others at the autopsy
00:05:12
the medical examiner concluded that
00:05:14
olamide's death occurred
00:05:16
long before the fire started the cause
00:05:19
of death in the medical examiner's
00:05:21
opinion
00:05:22
was exsanguination which means loss of
00:05:25
blood
00:05:25
due to a penetrating injury
00:05:28
investigators began
00:05:29
their search for the killer by looking
00:05:31
into olamide's
00:05:32
friends associates any possible enemies
00:05:36
and certainly anyone who had ties to
00:05:39
mississippi
00:05:41
on the night olamide disappeared friends
00:05:43
said she had a date planned
00:05:45
with a new boyfriend we talked about how
00:05:48
she was excited about going out on a
00:05:50
date with a
00:05:50
gentleman named bertis partice was 25
00:05:54
year old bartis harvester
00:05:56
a criminal justice major at the
00:05:58
university
00:06:00
when interviewed by police partise
00:06:02
claimed olamide canceled their date at
00:06:05
the last
00:06:06
minute sometime around 10 pm yes
00:06:09
you gave her a call yes where were you
00:06:12
when you called her
00:06:13
at home yes that time she told you
00:06:17
she changed her mind and she ran some
00:06:20
movies and decided to
00:06:21
just kind of call her tonight and say
00:06:23
you know exactly
00:06:25
partice denied any involvement in the
00:06:27
crime
00:06:28
the fact that she had canceled a date
00:06:31
with the guy on the very night that
00:06:34
she's last
00:06:35
seen alive um it's certainly something
00:06:37
that's gonna jump out
00:06:39
another suspect was olamide's former
00:06:42
boyfriend
00:06:43
andy foley a guitar player in a band
00:06:46
the two had recently broken up they
00:06:48
loved each other a lot
00:06:49
but it was definitely hard for them to
00:06:51
be away from each other for such a long
00:06:52
period of time
00:06:54
but foley provided an airtight alibi
00:06:57
andy was actually on tour and he was
00:06:59
actually on the east coast
00:07:01
and other band members of his verified
00:07:05
his whereabouts on the night of her
00:07:06
disappearance
00:07:09
something else happened on the day she
00:07:11
disappeared olamide told
00:07:13
friends about an incident that happened
00:07:16
while she was taking a shower in the
00:07:18
afternoon
00:07:24
one of olamide's former roommates ashley
00:07:27
todd martin
00:07:28
had entered olamide's apartment
00:07:29
uninvited through the unlocked front
00:07:31
door
00:07:34
this apparently angered vomiting
00:07:36
ashley's attitude was
00:07:38
why don't you have your door locked
00:07:39
while you're taking a shower
00:07:41
[Music]
00:07:43
olamide and ashley had recently decided
00:07:46
to live separately
00:07:47
olamide didn't want to be around this
00:07:50
girl anymore
00:07:51
according to olamide's close friends
00:07:54
from home
00:07:55
this girl seemed to be a bad influence
00:07:57
on olamide
00:07:58
and they were concerned about olamide's
00:08:01
relationship with this girl
00:08:03
i'd heard them have a couple of fights
00:08:04
sometimes you know i'd be on the phone
00:08:06
and they'd be fighting with each other
00:08:07
and it just
00:08:08
she wasn't normal when she fought with
00:08:10
her it wasn't
00:08:11
the olamide that i knew ashley todd
00:08:13
martin
00:08:15
vehemently denied any involvement in
00:08:17
olamide's disappearance
00:08:20
but police thought her constant
00:08:22
appearances on television newscasts
00:08:24
to discuss obama day were suspicious
00:08:28
it's like i feel bad i feel guilty
00:08:32
but i'm just glad that you don't have to
00:08:34
sit here
00:08:35
and wonder whether she's being hurt or
00:08:38
tortured or you know she's just
00:08:40
peaceful now it appeared to be more
00:08:43
about
00:08:44
ashley than about olamide
00:08:46
[Music]
00:08:48
since there were no signs of forced
00:08:50
entry into olamide adeyoye's apartment
00:08:54
investigators worked under the
00:08:56
assumption
00:08:57
that olamide was acquainted with her
00:08:59
killer
00:09:00
an informant called police suggesting
00:09:03
olamide's neighbor
00:09:05
might have been responsible we were
00:09:07
contacted by
00:09:08
a woman who had seen the news coverage
00:09:10
of olamide's disappearance
00:09:11
this woman was concerned that an
00:09:13
ex-boyfriend of hers
00:09:15
may have been involved in olamide's
00:09:16
disappearance the man
00:09:19
was 27 year old maurice wallace
00:09:22
he lived in a building about a hundred
00:09:24
yards from olamide's apartment
00:09:27
though not a college student wallace had
00:09:29
been living
00:09:30
on or near campus for years many
00:09:33
students remembered him
00:09:34
and not fondly
00:09:43
he would invite himself to parties
00:09:45
people described him as kind of creepy
00:09:47
and strange
00:09:48
women especially he wasn't a student
00:09:52
he wasn't a member of the community he
00:09:54
was
00:09:55
a bad person he was a bad person
00:09:58
and myself and twenty five thousand
00:10:01
other twenty somethings
00:10:03
in normal we'll attest to that a
00:10:06
background check revealed
00:10:07
maurice wallace had served four months
00:10:09
in jail shortly before olamide's murder
00:10:12
maurice wallace had assaulted and
00:10:14
battered someone
00:10:16
in a taxi cab was a situation where he
00:10:19
didn't know
00:10:20
the victim prior to the assault and it
00:10:23
was
00:10:23
another example of his unpredictability
00:10:26
and
00:10:26
aggressiveness after he was released
00:10:30
wallace had trouble finding work and he
00:10:32
told a former girlfriend he was planning
00:10:35
to commit
00:10:35
violence he has said some very
00:10:38
disturbing things
00:10:39
he was going to make a name for himself
00:10:41
or be become a martyr
00:10:43
by going out and killing someone wallace
00:10:46
also expressed his opinions on race
00:10:49
he seemed to have a lot of opinions
00:10:51
about society and racism
00:10:53
and and his take on what was
00:10:56
wrong with society as a whole
00:10:59
he had indicated that he wanted to marry
00:11:02
a nigerian woman
00:11:03
witnesses said olamide and wallace met
00:11:06
once
00:11:07
and that wallace told olamide he
00:11:09
objected to her dating
00:11:11
white men there was one occasion where
00:11:13
he had
00:11:14
attended a party and olamide was there
00:11:16
and he was kind of harassed in hilamide
00:11:18
about her boyfriend
00:11:19
but was this a possible motive for
00:11:22
murder
00:11:23
we think he may have been upset with her
00:11:26
you know she's part of the problem
00:11:27
because she's not
00:11:29
promoting um her race
00:11:32
she's a sellout if that's the term that
00:11:34
he would use
00:11:36
when police went to question him he was
00:11:39
gone
00:11:40
nabor said he hadn't been around since
00:11:42
olamide went missing
00:11:44
he did not have a vehicle and the fact
00:11:46
that
00:11:47
olamide's vehicle was missing it pointed
00:11:50
even more directly towards wallace
00:11:53
nationwide alerts were issued for
00:11:55
wallace and for olamide's car
00:11:57
when we say that yes we have reason to
00:12:00
believe that he's involved or has
00:12:02
knowledge
00:12:02
that does not rule out that there could
00:12:04
be other individuals
00:12:06
there very well could be so we're still
00:12:08
looking at that because we don't we
00:12:10
don't have all the pieces put together
00:12:11
yet
00:12:12
wallace's credit card activity showed he
00:12:14
purchased gasoline
00:12:16
in mississippi the day after olamide
00:12:18
disappeared
00:12:20
the gas station was near the barn where
00:12:23
olamide's body was discovered
00:12:26
what we hoped to find out was did he
00:12:28
purchase
00:12:29
gas or an accelerant there that could be
00:12:30
used to start the fire
00:12:32
unfortunately there were no video
00:12:35
surveillance cameras at that gas station
00:12:38
investigators discovered wallace did
00:12:40
have a connection
00:12:42
to mississippi wallace had some
00:12:45
connection to mississippi
00:12:46
and that he had some relatives that were
00:12:49
there
00:12:50
while investigators searched for wallace
00:12:52
they also had to search for forensic
00:12:55
evidence
00:12:55
and they weren't having much luck inside
00:12:58
olamide's apartment
00:13:00
it's a common misconception that there
00:13:02
are hundreds of fingerprints left at
00:13:04
every crime scene and
00:13:07
a lot of times you may only find one or
00:13:09
you may find none
00:13:11
since the crime was committed at night
00:13:14
investigators assumed the killer would
00:13:16
have turned off the lights
00:13:17
after cleaning up the blood but there
00:13:21
were no visible blood stains on the
00:13:23
light switch by the door
00:13:25
that whole area was actually brought
00:13:26
into the laboratory they cut out the
00:13:28
wall
00:13:28
and took the light switch and brought in
00:13:30
all of that to us
00:13:32
analysts viewed the switch plate with
00:13:35
oblique
00:13:36
or angled lighting we take various
00:13:39
different types of light sources
00:13:40
and we bring them in from the side from
00:13:42
the front and
00:13:44
do a lot of tilting with the evidence in
00:13:45
order to look at it on the surface to
00:13:47
see if we can see anything
00:13:48
on the surface itself and that's where
00:13:51
they found
00:13:52
a single high quality fingerprint and it
00:13:55
looked like
00:13:56
it was in plasma not all blood is
00:13:59
red or brownish like you would think
00:14:01
there are other components in the blood
00:14:03
that are clear the plasma is a clear
00:14:06
substance and it tends to separate out
00:14:08
from the
00:14:09
red part of the blood dna testing showed
00:14:13
the blood
00:14:14
was olamides which meant the print
00:14:18
probably belonged to whoever harmed her
00:14:22
that was key there's not a whole lot of
00:14:24
innocent explanation for that
00:14:26
it's like finding a print over blood on
00:14:28
a murder weapon
00:14:30
but where was maurice wallace
00:14:36
investigators found a fingerprint on the
00:14:39
light switch
00:14:40
in olamide adeyoye's apartment the print
00:14:44
didn't match olamide's former roommate
00:14:47
ashley todd martin
00:14:48
or any of the other suspects questioned
00:14:51
in the case
00:14:52
but police were still searching for
00:14:55
their prime
00:14:55
suspect maurice wallace according to his
00:14:59
credit card activity
00:15:00
he was traveling throughout the southern
00:15:02
united states
00:15:04
to track him more closely investigators
00:15:07
focused
00:15:08
on his cell phone activity through
00:15:11
cellular phone forensics
00:15:12
we're able to locate very specifically
00:15:15
where maurice wallace was
00:15:17
in real time
00:15:20
when wallace made a call from a shopping
00:15:22
mall in atlanta georgia
00:15:24
police
00:15:33
[Music]
00:15:38
when police arrested maurice wallace
00:15:40
they found olamide's keys in his
00:15:42
possession
00:15:44
which was a a big giveaway at that point
00:15:47
wallace wasn't driving olamide's car he
00:15:50
was driving
00:15:51
a rental car instead there was a gas can
00:15:54
that was located in his rental vehicle
00:15:56
we suspected it may have been used to
00:15:58
start this fire
00:16:00
wallace denied any involvement in
00:16:02
olamide's murder
00:16:03
i've got to go ahead and read you a
00:16:05
couple things i'm sure you've you know
00:16:07
where's my turn why am i here without an
00:16:09
attorney you're gonna ask me some
00:16:11
questions
00:16:11
nine times i tell you whatever i answer
00:16:13
gonna be used against me so
00:16:15
i want an attorney when police left the
00:16:17
room
00:16:18
wallace was alone unaware he was
00:16:22
being recorded he made what looked like
00:16:24
a speech
00:16:26
to himself any sort of
00:16:29
insurgency or revolution you don't just
00:16:32
go at the
00:16:32
oppressor you go at the people who
00:16:35
helped the oppressor
00:16:37
people who ate in the backyard send a
00:16:40
message that if you cooperate with these
00:16:42
people
00:16:42
you're gonna whack you this revealed a
00:16:46
potential motive
00:16:47
for olamide's murder we think he may
00:16:50
have been upset with her
00:16:51
for dating a white man when police
00:16:55
compared wallace's fingerprint
00:16:57
to the bloody fingerprint found in
00:16:59
olamide's bedroom
00:17:02
it was a match ten
00:17:05
days after wallace's arrest police found
00:17:08
delamade's car
00:17:10
abandoned in a residential area of
00:17:12
atlanta
00:17:14
olamide's blood was discovered in the
00:17:16
trunk
00:17:17
they also found bloody fingerprints on
00:17:20
the rear view mirror
00:17:22
i was able then to powder and lift those
00:17:24
impressions
00:17:25
and then lift them off of the rearview
00:17:27
mirror and then do a comparison
00:17:30
one of these was maurice wallace's
00:17:33
thumbprint
00:17:34
dna testing identified the blood
00:17:37
as olamides investigators also found
00:17:41
evidence
00:17:42
on wallace's genes to the naked eye it
00:17:46
didn't
00:17:46
appear that there was anything unusual
00:17:48
about them however
00:17:49
later forensic testing found there was
00:17:52
blood on those pants
00:17:54
and that blood was olamides
00:17:57
definitive proof that wallace was her
00:18:01
killer
00:18:05
police believe olamide let wallace into
00:18:09
her apartment
00:18:10
she knew him from the neighborhood
00:18:14
once inside he may have made a sexual
00:18:17
advance
00:18:17
and was rejected
00:18:20
he then snapped
00:18:21
[Music]
00:18:26
he stabbed olamide getting blood on his
00:18:29
jeans
00:18:31
he wrapped her body in a blanket and put
00:18:33
olamide's body in the trunk of her car
00:18:37
[Music]
00:18:40
he tried to clean the bloodstains with
00:18:42
detergent found in the apartment
00:18:53
but as he turned off the light he left
00:18:56
his fingerprint on the switch plate
00:18:58
in plasma and left his bloody thumb
00:19:01
print
00:19:02
on the rear view mirror
00:19:06
then drove to mississippi to burn her
00:19:09
body
00:19:12
he found an old barn put
00:19:15
olamide's body inside then
00:19:19
set it on fire the entire barn
00:19:22
burned to the ground
00:19:27
forensic odeontology identified her
00:19:30
remains
00:19:31
although wallace probably thought no one
00:19:33
in mississippi
00:19:34
would connect this fire to a girl's
00:19:37
disappearance
00:19:38
in illinois olamide's friends and family
00:19:43
say
00:19:44
the outstanding work of the
00:19:46
investigators and scientists
00:19:48
marked the end of a long difficult
00:19:50
struggle
00:19:52
she was a great person and she was
00:19:54
always
00:19:55
loving and open and as much as that's a
00:19:59
great quality
00:20:00
it can also be somewhat of a downfall
00:20:02
because
00:20:03
the world can be very ugly and you don't
00:20:06
know who is out there
00:20:08
in december of 2005 maurice wallace was
00:20:12
charged with first
00:20:13
degree murder his aberrant behavior
00:20:16
didn't
00:20:17
end with his arrest maurice wallace was
00:20:20
very combative during court hearings
00:20:22
one occasion he spit on the floor as he
00:20:25
entered the courtroom
00:20:27
talking when he was not supposed to be
00:20:30
talking
00:20:31
interrupting the judge because of the
00:20:34
evidence against him wallace pled guilty
00:20:38
and was sentenced to life in prison
00:20:41
maurice wallace was a sociopath he's
00:20:44
evil he certainly knew what he was doing
00:20:45
every step of the way here
00:20:48
he had a plan he carried it out didn't
00:20:50
have any
00:20:52
regard to his victim there's just an
00:20:55
evil man that
00:20:57
did what he told his friend on the phone
00:20:58
he was going to go out and kill somebody
00:21:00
and
00:21:00
try to make a name for himself when the
00:21:03
victim
00:21:03
has been murdered or is no longer alive
00:21:06
the only thing that's left to be able to
00:21:07
speak for that person
00:21:09
is the evidence itself
