Forensic Files (HD) - Season 13, Episode 28 - Needle in a Haystack - Full Episode

March 05, 2021 / 21:16

This episode covers the mysterious death of 24-year-old Michelle Hearnden, the investigation into her death, and the eventual identification of her murderer, Oliver O'Quinn. Key topics include the autopsy findings, the role of propofol, and the forensic evidence that led to O'Quinn's arrest.

Michelle Hearnden, a personal trainer and student at the University of Florida, was found dead in her apartment shortly before Thanksgiving. Her fiancé, Jason Doyle, discovered her body after she failed to attend classes or work. Initial autopsy results showed no clear cause of death, leaving investigators puzzled.

As the investigation progressed, a tiny puncture mark on Michelle's arm led medical examiners to suspect foul play. They discovered that she had been injected with propofol, a powerful sedative. The investigation revealed that the drug was obtained from a hospital where Oliver O'Quinn worked.

O'Quinn, a nurse with a troubling history of obsession towards Michelle, fled to Ireland after her death. However, he was eventually apprehended and linked to the crime through DNA evidence found on syringe caps in Michelle's trash.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that O'Quinn intentionally killed Michelle after overhearing her derogatory comments about him. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, marking a significant case in forensic history.

TL;DR

Michelle Hearnden was murdered by nurse Oliver O'Quinn using propofol, revealed through forensic evidence and a troubled obsession.

Florida it's also time for thousands of
00:00:47
students to get back to their
00:00:49
studies 24-year-old Michelle hearnden
00:00:52
was entering her senior year after
00:00:55
graduation she hoped to do volunteer
00:00:57
work she wanted to go join the p core
00:01:00
she had a very long list of of dreams
00:01:03
and hopes to accomplish to pay her way
00:01:05
through school Michelle worked as a
00:01:07
personal trainer between classes and her
00:01:11
job Michelle kept to a predictable
00:01:17
schedule but one day shortly before
00:01:20
Thanksgiving she didn't attend any of
00:01:22
her classes or show up for work this was
00:01:26
so unlike her not to return their calls
00:01:28
or not to show up and I guess their
00:01:31
Sixth Sense was that something is very
00:01:34
very
00:01:36
wrong Michelle's fiance Jason Doyle
00:01:40
immediately drove the 400 miles from his
00:01:42
home in Miami to Michelle's home in
00:01:45
Gainesville to see what was
00:01:48
wrong he finds Michelle's house is it's
00:01:51
locked up all the doors are locked all
00:01:54
the windows are locked the outside
00:01:56
lights are still on as they would had
00:02:00
been left on from the night
00:02:01
before her dog was inside and the TV was
00:02:05
on through a crack in the blinds Jason
00:02:08
could actually see what later turned out
00:02:10
to be Michelle's
00:02:12
foot when police arrived they found
00:02:15
Michelle's body in her bedroom face down
00:02:19
it was clear she'd been dead for some
00:02:22
time she was in a somewhat awkward
00:02:24
position with her left arm folded up
00:02:26
underneath her body at first glance
00:02:29
there was no trauma to the body no
00:02:31
bruises no wounds no blood we had no
00:02:36
indication of what would have caused her
00:02:38
death the medical examiner thought the
00:02:41
position of Michelle's Body Face Down
00:02:44
was unusual if somebody is sick and in
00:02:48
the process of dying most folks tend to
00:02:52
end up either on their side or on their
00:02:54
back there were no foreign fingerprints
00:02:56
in the apartment no signs of forced
00:02:59
entry and no valuables were
00:03:02
missing her VCR her television set her
00:03:05
radio jewelry it was all intact and
00:03:08
there was no indication this was a
00:03:12
suicide if it's going to be a suicide
00:03:15
there's going to be pill bottles lying
00:03:17
around them frequently in note there was
00:03:19
none of that on this
00:03:21
case there was a half full bottle of
00:03:23
beer next to Michelle's body only
00:03:27
Michelle's fingerprints were on the
00:03:29
bottom
00:03:30
there was no indication that she had
00:03:31
gotten drunk off the one beer that was
00:03:32
lying on the bed um there was either
00:03:35
beer in the refrigerator there was just
00:03:37
nothing to indicate that she had passed
00:03:39
out drunk they wanted to see if perhaps
00:03:41
something had been inside of the beer
00:03:43
bottle perhaps a foul play a substance
00:03:45
place in the beer bottle that may have
00:03:47
contributed to her death but no foreign
00:03:51
substances were found inside the bottle
00:03:54
it was baffling wow how could this
00:03:58
healthy 24 4year old young lady have
00:04:01
died and is it even possible that she
00:04:04
would have simply died of natural
00:04:08
causes in most cases the medical
00:04:11
examiner doesn't have much difficulty
00:04:13
determining the cause and manner of an
00:04:15
individual's death but Michelle hen's
00:04:19
case was different at the end of the
00:04:22
autopsy I really had no idea I didn't
00:04:25
find
00:04:26
anything anything slightly wrong
00:04:29
whatsoever to find somebody that's
00:04:31
deceased without any indication of what
00:04:34
what caused him to die especially
00:04:35
somebody that's that young was highly
00:04:39
unusual the medical examiner estimated
00:04:42
that Michelle died about 24 hours before
00:04:45
her body was found so investigators
00:04:48
interviewed everyone who was with
00:04:51
Michelle during that time frame they
00:04:54
also checked the Alibis of those closest
00:04:57
to Michelle including her fiance say
00:05:01
Jason squeaky clean Jason had an alibi
00:05:03
of being at work and was quickly removed
00:05:06
as a potential suspect then the medical
00:05:10
examiner took a closer look at something
00:05:13
on Michelle's left arm a tiny Mark
00:05:17
smaller than most needle marks we needed
00:05:21
to find the explanation for that
00:05:22
puncture wound and there could be a very
00:05:23
legitimate explanation for it but
00:05:26
Michelle's personal physician said she
00:05:29
didn't have any blood drawn before her
00:05:31
death or receive any
00:05:34
injections so the medical examiner told
00:05:37
investigators to widen their search at
00:05:40
the crime scene looking for possible
00:05:43
evidence of drug use or an overdose in a
00:05:47
case like this where we have no clues
00:05:49
every clue is
00:05:51
significant investigators noticed that
00:05:54
the trash cans inside Michelle's
00:05:56
apartment were empty on a hunch they
00:05:59
looked looked outside the apartment to
00:06:01
see where the trash was Kept For
00:06:04
disposal we went over to where the trash
00:06:06
bins for that particular little
00:06:07
Community are stored and on the ground
00:06:11
in a small plastic bag I could see what
00:06:14
was visible was a bottle a
00:06:16
pharmaceutical bottle and I called the
00:06:19
investigator over and said we got to
00:06:20
look at this the bag contained two vials
00:06:24
of a drug labeled
00:06:26
propol some syringes and a pach Patric
00:06:30
butterfly IV and it obviously had come
00:06:33
from Michelle's house cuz contained
00:06:35
within the bag was some maale that had
00:06:37
been addressed to her to use a pediatric
00:06:40
butterfly
00:06:42
IV is Tiny it would leave a tiny little
00:06:45
pin prick that would be very hard to
00:06:47
discover the items were dusted for
00:06:50
fingerprints but none were
00:06:52
found investigators needed to know what
00:06:55
propol was used for propofol is in a
00:07:00
nutshell the world's most powerful anti-
00:07:03
breathing drug in the medical setting
00:07:06
it's used by anesthesiologists to
00:07:08
essentially put people to sleep propol a
00:07:12
prescription sedative is an intravenous
00:07:15
medication administered by medical
00:07:19
professionals the kind of anesthetic
00:07:21
that when it's administered the
00:07:22
anesthesiologist says count backward
00:07:24
from 100 and you get to about
00:07:26
99 very powerful stuff to too much
00:07:29
propol can cause death within
00:07:33
seconds investigators asked that
00:07:36
Michelle's Toxicology test be screened
00:07:39
specifically for propofol it's highly
00:07:42
unusual we wouldn't typically see
00:07:44
propofol in our drug screen so we've
00:07:48
never detected it in other cases as
00:07:52
expected tests were positive for
00:07:55
propol I can't say with specificity how
00:07:59
much drug she got but one thing was
00:08:03
clear the dose was Lethal the amount of
00:08:07
drug that was administered was
00:08:08
sufficient to cause someone to fall
00:08:11
unconscious and to stop breathing to the
00:08:14
medical examiner it all started to make
00:08:18
sense whoever it was used a pediatric
00:08:22
sized needle to make the tiny puncture
00:08:25
wound in Michelle's left arm since there
00:08:28
was virtually
00:08:30
no hemorrhaging all of those things were
00:08:33
highly suggestive of somebody who has a
00:08:36
lot of skill in this the medical
00:08:38
examiner believed that this was the work
00:08:40
of a medical professional most likely
00:08:43
someone who worked in a hospital and
00:08:45
probably someone Michelle knew whoever
00:08:49
had injected Michelle hearnen was
00:08:52
someone that for whatever the reasons
00:08:54
were she had trusted enough to offer
00:08:58
that person her left arm she would not
00:09:00
have been able to administer the dose
00:09:02
and then clean up and take the medical
00:09:05
waste the 60 ft from her body where it
00:09:07
was
00:09:09
located but who was this
00:09:13
person to find out detective Mark
00:09:16
woodmancy came up with an idea that
00:09:19
changed the course of the
00:09:21
investigation he told analysts to test
00:09:25
the syringe caps found in Michelle's
00:09:28
trash I can remember seeing medical
00:09:31
staff hold needle caps in their mouth
00:09:33
while they were giving an injection and
00:09:35
I thought that there was a potential
00:09:36
there for saliva DNA I thought that was
00:09:39
um rather brilliant in fact DNA analysts
00:09:44
swabbed the needle caps and found
00:09:48
biological material on the needle cap or
00:09:51
cover there was an unknown male DNA
00:09:54
profile and scientists also found DNA
00:09:58
inside the
00:10:00
syringe I was able to determine that
00:10:03
Miss hen's DNA was present in one of
00:10:05
them proof it had been used on Michelle
00:10:10
the substance that was found in the
00:10:12
catheter was a mixture of Michelle's
00:10:14
blood and
00:10:15
propal Michelle's death was now
00:10:18
classified as a homicide and the murder
00:10:21
weapon was
00:10:23
propol I've never seen a propal related
00:10:26
death um ever but who wanted Michelle
00:10:32
[Music]
00:10:35
dead Michelle hen's death had been ruled
00:10:38
a homicide the cause of death an
00:10:41
overdose of the prescription drug
00:10:45
propofol propal is a short acting
00:10:47
intravenous sedative used in general
00:10:50
anesthesia but it's also used to treat
00:10:53
other medical conditions propal has been
00:10:57
suggested as a medication to treat
00:11:00
migraines it's not a clear indication or
00:11:03
definitive indication to treat migraines
00:11:05
but it has been reported to be helpful
00:11:07
to treat migraines detectives learned
00:11:10
that Michelle hearnden had been a
00:11:12
lifelong migraine sufferer from what I
00:11:16
understand they were bad I've never had
00:11:19
one but people who suffer from these
00:11:20
things tell me they're just absolutely
00:11:22
horrible they would go to the ends of
00:11:23
the Earth to get some relief from the
00:11:25
pain was it possible that Michelle had
00:11:28
sought pain medication from someone
00:11:31
other than her doctor they just wanted
00:11:34
to know if Michelle knew anybody in the
00:11:35
medical
00:11:36
field only person I knew was
00:11:39
Oliver Oliver was 30-year-old Oliver Oak
00:11:43
Quinn an intensive care nurse at Chan's
00:11:46
Hospital on the campus of the University
00:11:48
of
00:11:50
Florida a background check revealed
00:11:52
Michelle and Oliver were casual
00:11:55
friends I describe him as cooky and OD
00:11:59
is definitely a good adjective there was
00:12:01
just something about him something that
00:12:03
he felt like he had to go the extra mile
00:12:06
to prove himself where most people would
00:12:08
just be
00:12:09
themselves the way he acted about
00:12:11
Michelle I kind of knew from when he
00:12:14
first met her that he had had a crush on
00:12:15
her I think she made comments to both
00:12:17
her friends and her mother that he was
00:12:20
weird and that she felt sorry for him
00:12:23
then police discovered some troubling
00:12:26
information a review of Michelle's
00:12:29
record showed that o'quinn's interest in
00:12:31
Michelle bordered on harassment he had
00:12:35
called Michelle hearnen 43 times in less
00:12:38
than a month and he had called Michelle
00:12:41
hearnen every single day for nine
00:12:44
straight days preceding her murder he
00:12:47
never calls her again he knows there's
00:12:49
no one there to answer o'quinn's job in
00:12:51
the Intensive Care Unit would have given
00:12:54
him access to Pediatric butterfly IVs
00:12:57
like the ones found in Michelle's trash
00:13:01
investigators wanted to see if they
00:13:03
could link O'Quinn to the two bottles of
00:13:06
propol the important thing to me at this
00:13:08
point is to track these drugs where did
00:13:11
they come from how can I put them in an
00:13:13
individual's hand the vials of propofol
00:13:16
have a National Drug control number and
00:13:20
a lot number those specific bottles of
00:13:23
propa fall were shipped by messen
00:13:26
Distributors out of Lakeland Florida
00:13:28
from there the they were shipped to the
00:13:30
shans hospital at the University of
00:13:32
Florida they were shipped during the
00:13:35
time period of when Oliver o Quinn was
00:13:37
employed there specifically they were
00:13:40
placed in an automated dispensing
00:13:43
machine in the hospital ICU I traced it
00:13:47
to a machine that operates kind of like
00:13:49
a soda machine you punch in the patient
00:13:51
number and it drops a bottle of a
00:13:53
pharmaceutical in your
00:13:56
hand to get the propol from the the
00:13:59
dispensing machine a Hospital employee
00:14:02
had to enter his employee number and
00:14:05
whose code was entered to get these two
00:14:11
vials registered nurse Oliver oquinn so
00:14:16
I actually had that propile all the way
00:14:19
from the manufacturer in Massachusetts
00:14:21
to Oliver o'quinn's hand in the Surgical
00:14:23
Intensive Care Unit the hospital all
00:14:26
investigators needed now was a sample of
00:14:29
a Quinn's DNA to compare to the DNA on
00:14:32
the needle caps found in Michelle's
00:14:36
trash when police went to question him
00:14:38
they learned he had fled the country and
00:14:41
was in Ireland where he had applied for
00:14:43
a nursing license he doesn't ever intend
00:14:46
on coming back to the US it's very
00:14:49
difficult to extradite someone back from
00:14:50
Ireland I spoke with a lady who is in
00:14:52
charge of just extradition from the
00:14:55
Republic of Ireland and I told her look
00:14:58
I've got a warrant in my hand I want to
00:15:00
arrest this man and she said to me and
00:15:03
to the effect you know slow down Columbo
00:15:05
we've it's it's going to be it's a very
00:15:07
long process but what was o' Quinn's
00:15:11
motive to kill
00:15:13
Michelle and would investigators find a
00:15:17
way to get him back to the United
00:15:23
States investigators had two problems in
00:15:27
the murder of Michelle
00:15:30
hen first they couldn't understand why
00:15:34
their Prime Suspect Oliver O'Quinn would
00:15:37
kill her and second O'Quinn had fled the
00:15:41
United States to Ireland in order to
00:15:44
avoid
00:15:45
prosecution to smoke him out
00:15:48
investigators contacted the Irish Times
00:15:51
newspaper and emailed them a picture of
00:15:54
Michelle a picture of Oliver and a
00:15:56
synopsis of the homicide investigation
00:15:59
telling them he is wanted for murder in
00:16:00
the United States and they published it
00:16:02
on three separate
00:16:04
occasions facing increasing pressure
00:16:07
O'Quinn left Ireland and flew to the
00:16:10
West African country of Sagal where he
00:16:13
was immediately turned over to us
00:16:18
authorities once in custody
00:16:21
investigators got a court order to
00:16:22
obtain o' Quinn's DNA sample which was
00:16:25
then compared to the DNA found
00:16:29
on the syringe cap it matched to me I
00:16:34
would equate that with getting the
00:16:35
suspect's fingerprint off the trigger of
00:16:37
the murder
00:16:39
weapon Oliver made a great many mistakes
00:16:42
thank goodness Oliver O'Quinn was
00:16:45
charged with first deegree murder the
00:16:48
only remaining question was
00:16:51
motive I know he tried very hard to
00:16:54
infuse himself into Michelle's life and
00:16:57
mostly out of pity and feeling sorry for
00:16:59
him she would bring him along to do
00:17:02
things with to go out to watch a band to
00:17:04
meet in the morning and have
00:17:07
coffee but in custody Oliver told a
00:17:10
fellow inmate he grew angry with
00:17:13
Michelle because he overheard her during
00:17:15
a telephone conversation saying
00:17:18
something unflattering about him she
00:17:21
made some comments of a derogatory
00:17:23
nature about Oliver oquinn comments that
00:17:27
she didn't expect for him to hear but he
00:17:29
did hear he heard Michelle refer to him
00:17:33
as an annoying little man and we believe
00:17:37
because of that that sent him into this
00:17:41
mindset that if you're never going to be
00:17:43
mine then you're never going to be
00:17:44
anybody's and the inmate stated that
00:17:47
Oliver confided to him that she needed a
00:17:49
long
00:17:52
sleep prosecutors believe O'Quinn
00:17:55
hatched a plan he told Michelle the next
00:17:59
time she had a migraine headache he'd be
00:18:01
willing to come to her apartment and
00:18:04
give her something that would get rid of
00:18:06
the pain
00:18:09
quickly the evidence shows he got the
00:18:12
propol from work typing his employee
00:18:15
number into the medication control
00:18:18
system designed specifically to prevent
00:18:21
this very
00:18:25
abuse then he waited for Melle to
00:18:30
call when she did Oliver put his plan
00:18:34
into
00:18:35
action on the night Michelle had the
00:18:38
migraine Oliver stopped by her apartment
00:18:41
on his way home from work he injected
00:18:44
Michelle with a lethal dose of propol
00:18:47
using a small pediatric syringe but he
00:18:52
did something medical professionals
00:18:54
often do used his teeth to pull the
00:18:58
plastic a cap off the syringe and Left
00:19:02
Behind the DNA that later identified him
00:19:06
Michelle was dead within
00:19:12
seconds he positioned her arm underneath
00:19:16
her body so the needle Mark wouldn't be
00:19:19
easily
00:19:23
noticeable he threw the syringes and
00:19:26
propal bottles into a plastic B bag
00:19:29
which he tossed into the dumpster behind
00:19:32
Michelle's rented home not realizing the
00:19:35
obvious that those serial numbers could
00:19:39
be traced I believe that the pain was
00:19:42
such that she entrusted Oliver O'Quinn
00:19:45
to administer the pain reliever and I
00:19:48
think that he took advantage of that
00:19:50
trust and intentionally took her life
00:19:52
with the prop of all Oliver O'Quinn went
00:19:56
on trial for first-degree murder his
00:19:59
defense claimed he gave Michelle the
00:20:01
propal to help relieve the pain from her
00:20:05
migraine headache but accidentally gave
00:20:08
her too much there's no way that the
00:20:12
administration of propal to Michelle
00:20:14
hearnen was an accidental death this was
00:20:18
an action consistent with homicide the
00:20:21
jury didn't believe it either O'Quinn
00:20:24
was convicted of first-degree murder and
00:20:27
sentenced to life in prison without
00:20:30
parole this is the first reported case
00:20:34
ever involving Murder By the use of
00:20:36
propol so this entire case was driven by
00:20:40
and solved by forensics there is no
00:20:43
eyewitness so how do you put a person
00:20:45
there without
00:20:47
evidence I mean without the evidence I
00:20:50
don't think it would have worked
00:20:52
everybody did their job and they did a
00:20:54
great job and it all came together I've
00:20:57
never had a case
00:20:59
where the Small Things mattered so much
00:21:02
where something as small as a needle
00:21:03
Mark or the amount of DNA left on a
00:21:05
needle cap played such a pivotal role in
00:21:09
the resolution of the case
