You can't be afraid to verbalize your
00:00:03
ignorance. That's holding you back.
00:00:05
Give me an example.
00:00:06
I can give you several. Like investing
00:00:08
like you're telling me that if I put
00:00:10
this money in here right now, I get 30x
00:00:13
20x. What the [ __ ] It's a [ __ ] scam.
00:00:16
I know a scam. When I see one, go find
00:00:18
you another idiot cuz it ain't happening
00:00:20
over here, buddy. But when you go and
00:00:22
you say, "I don't know what that means."
00:00:24
How does investing really work? I don't
00:00:26
know where to get it. Now you're a part
00:00:27
of the right conversations. You're part
00:00:29
of the right opportunities, but you get
00:00:31
there by being the dummy in them. And
00:00:34
now look at what I'm able to do.
00:00:38
I love it. I love it.
00:00:39
Kevin, it took 13 years from where you
00:00:41
did your first stand up to you having
00:00:43
your moment. But why didn't you quit?
00:00:44
Because of the lessons that my mom gave
00:00:46
from being very scarred from my brother.
00:00:49
So, let's go back. I grew up in North
00:00:51
Philadelphia. My brother sold the drugs.
00:00:53
My dad was always in jail, out of jail.
00:00:55
My mom wasn't going to let that happen
00:00:56
with me. So, we had an agreement. I had
00:00:58
a certain amount of time to make comedy
00:01:00
work. And in my mind, it wasn't going to
00:01:02
be hard because there was no other
00:01:03
option. I would figure it out. So, I was
00:01:05
driving from Philadelphia to New York
00:01:06
every day. I wasn't coming home until
00:01:08
4:00 a.m. where I was doing 25 to 28
00:01:11
sets a weekend.
00:01:14
I worked at for a very, very long time.
00:01:16
And the struggle left you with days of
00:01:18
what am I doing? Can I pay my rent? [ __ ]
00:01:21
this, man. But my mom's biggest lesson
00:01:23
was you're not quitting. And not many
00:01:25
people are going to do the 13 years of
00:01:27
hardship. Most people opt out at year
00:01:29
two. I'm going to go find a quick
00:01:30
return. Well, you keep quitting to start
00:01:32
something else that you think is the
00:01:33
idea. It's just a cycle. You're never
00:01:35
completing anything. You got to make a
00:01:36
choice of the thing you're going to do
00:01:37
and finish. I made the choice that
00:01:39
standup comedy was what I was going to
00:01:41
finish because if I focused and did it
00:01:43
well, that would open up the doors for
00:01:45
me to do everything else that I want to
00:01:47
do.
00:01:48
But they say that you can't have
00:01:49
everything in life.
00:01:50
So, what is the cost? Have you struggled
00:01:52
with your mental health? What advice
00:01:53
have you got for young men in terms of
00:01:55
like what it takes to be a good man?
00:01:57
It's a weird thing that's happening
00:01:58
where the definition of a good man is so
00:02:01
foggy. It seems that in this time today
00:02:03
more men are being forward wanting to
00:02:07
express and talk but the fear of being
00:02:09
judged after.
00:02:11
Do you have that fear?
