00:00:00
if there was a car or a vehicle I had during a zombie apocalypse I think the Rivera would be the last one I would
00:00:05
pick cyber truck top of the list cyber TR is probably the top of the list it's
00:00:11
it is the top of the list yeah you'd pick an EV and a zombie apocalypse what if the electricity is out you have a better chance of finding gas reserves
00:00:18
but doesn't people don't people always say that gas pumps run electricity so if electricity is out you're doomed anyway
00:00:23
yeah well I would siphon it with my mouth you can siphon electricity with your
00:00:28
mouth if you try hard
00:00:37
enough hey what is up people of the internet welcome back to another episode of the waveform podcast we're your hosts
00:00:43
I'm Marquez and I'm Andrew and so I'm back David's out this time yes we're ring around the Rosier we'll uh that
00:00:50
just means we'll just have to Cle at some point but uh we got a whole bunch to talk about we've got some Final Cut
00:00:57
Pro updates some some new oh new Ram pickup I didn't even know about that that's on the list it's it's an
00:01:03
interesting Twist on its electrification also okay I'm interested uh we also want to talk about a new Sony camera that has
00:01:08
a literal boost button and makes the craziest sound effects because of this boost button you'll see what we mean uh
00:01:13
but first of all I just want to say if if you didn't hear at the end of the last week's episode where I chimed in on
00:01:19
FaceTime I do want to issue an apology a correction for two weeks ago now at this
00:01:25
point when I mentioned that I didn't think the Nissan GTR was a track car uh I was wrong whoops very wrong it's
00:01:34
clearly uh I was well educated on the history of the Nissan GTR and how it was actually a really impressive track car
00:01:40
it set like production records at the nurur ring it has this whole Rich history of many different versions of the GTR that were awesome on a track so
00:01:47
my perception of the GTR was totally wrong at the time so if you went off into your life after listening to that
00:01:52
episode thinking that the GTR was not a track car I'm here at the beginning here to tell you people will be very mad at you for thinking that so now you know
00:02:00
the GTR nice little track Heritage well played Nissan uh also want to shout out
00:02:05
real quick uh the decoder podcast Nei had on President Obama and he had a lot
00:02:12
to say about AI they talked about ai ai regulation the new tech waves coming up
00:02:18
they're sort of like the wave of social media and then the wave of AI being some of the most disruptive Technologies ever
00:02:23
and really really insightful questions and answers I thought it was awesome yeah I think Nei did a good job at asking a bunch of questions and
00:02:29
referencing like you said um regulations based on social media and how it didn't really do very well so how do they adapt
00:02:36
to make sure that obviously former president Obama isn't the one in there doing stuff like that but he's working
00:02:41
towards different things and still has organizations moving forward with it um it was really really good last week
00:02:47
David and I briefly just mentioned the bill that got passed or the the executive order that got passed about AI
00:02:53
but it was very vague because we didn't know much and if you want way more information about that and AI regulations in general that Dakota
00:03:00
episode is great yeah it has a lot of well fleshed out thoughts that I have not even been able to like fully put in
00:03:06
words yet and just listening to him like sit through and think through them in real time is great so we'll link it
00:03:11
below um one other thing D remember a few weeks ago we were talking about would you take a driver list taxi yeah
00:03:18
well David did he's in San Francisco right now and he made he said he would right yeah okay he made a studio short
00:03:24
on it so if you want to see his experience you know maybe he made it out alive maybe he didn't you'll never
00:03:30
believe what happen there's a reason he's not here that's why he's not here but um
00:03:35
it's on the studio Channel if you want to go see it very nice very nice okay we did get some new Mac so we should talk
00:03:40
about the new Apple announcement and the Mac that we got out of it I mean I'm sure you guys talked about a lot of that
00:03:46
stuff I just kind of have now we have them inh house and we want to sort of give a little bit more of my reactions
00:03:53
to it specifically M3 M3 Pro M3 Max stuff um we have it in person now the
00:03:59
the matte black sorry space black MacBook Pro
00:04:05
and it's it's gray is is basically what I wanted to say it's it's gray I
00:04:11
canceled my order really I canceled my order I I had ordered a maxed out 16in
00:04:16
M3 Max space black MacBook Pro and then we got our review unit here
00:04:24
I was flexing cuz it's such a Chad computer it is a it is a serious computer I had 7,000
00:04:30
committed ready to go on this computer we got a review unit which is also a maxed out map black 16inch space black
00:04:38
MacBook Pro and don't get me wrong it's an incredible computer very impressive very capable nice GPU improvements by
00:04:45
the time this podcast episode is out hopefully the full review is also live and you can see everything I think about it but basically the two new things with
00:04:52
the computer are the new chip and the new color and I was thinking the new chip by itself might not really be
00:04:58
enough of a reason for me to upgrade and the new color by itself super cool but not really enough of reason for you
00:05:03
to upgrade but maybe combined they will add up to a computer that I really want
00:05:09
I like how the performance and color are the things that might combine together it's the only things no you're right
00:05:15
you're right so I I stacked those on top of each other I was like all right new color new performance this will be worth the upgrade for me and then we got it in
00:05:21
hand and the performance it's yeah it's better but in a lot of the the same
00:05:27
reasons we've been talking about before like the leap was from the Intel MacBook Pros to the Apple silicon ones this is a
00:05:34
small bump from the M2 family and a decent bump from the M1 family okay yeah you're using a an M1 currently right
00:05:41
this right here is my M1 Max MacBook Pro I can't believe there's a day that I'm
00:05:47
working with you and you are two generations behind on something with computing power and it's totally fine
00:05:54
and it's a really good computer again because I edit most stuff on the desktop and when I do take a video on the go
00:06:00
like when I edited The Impressions video on this laptop it handled it super well M um so I don't need the upgrade if I
00:06:07
was doing like full-on projects maybe I'd think about it but the other thing is the color is not that different either it's it's just a it's just enough
00:06:15
darker gray that I noticed that it's not space gray but it's definitely not black
00:06:20
like your laptop is black mhm do you want this one that one has a lot more
00:06:25
fingerprints on it and I will give Apple credit I think they realized like couldn't get any darker than that
00:06:31
without starting to take on remember midnight Midnight was just an remember jet black the iPhone yeah iPhone 7 I think
00:06:39
it was had a jet black which is glossy pitch black that thing looked amazing out the box and then immediately got
00:06:45
covered in I would argue not even amazing out the box amazing as the box has like a quarter of an inch open and
00:06:51
then the minute it's open yeah it's yeah so I I think I realized that stacking the per the new performance and the new
00:06:57
camera still wasn't enough to to just ify that upgrade for me so I canceled it
00:07:03
wow there you have it you already here first so it sucks no I mean I'm sure
00:07:08
someone would love to write the headline like MKBHD cancels an order it's it's just I I have a great laptop I just
00:07:14
wrote that head the article's out already no I think it was good um so I'm going to keep using this one it's a it's
00:07:20
been a great laptop for me my my battery life maybe I think people were asking for like my long-term review of this laptop so far it's like the only thing
00:07:26
that's maybe dipped a little bit is battery life M and I think I expected that out of M1 Max other than that it's
00:07:32
been great yeah I think David and I were trying to debate on if we thought you would upgrade and I think both of us
00:07:38
thought you would do the double the jump because you skipped one already um I
00:07:43
would have agreed with you as I plac the order because I did place the order I did place the order but I it did not
00:07:49
ship and I canceled it I mean I think that's so many people listening right now if Marquez is still using M1 MacBook
00:07:57
Pro it's probably it's a real shame you can't can't really get them anymore right you have to get like a refurbished version yeah that doesn't mean go buy
00:08:03
the M1 Max right now uh because it might not be priced correctly I haven't even looked up how much it would cost I don't
00:08:09
think you can get it I was talking to a friend the other day about that and he specifically wanted a MacBook Pro and I
00:08:14
was trying to convince him to get an air and I was like well maybe you can find an M1 MacBook Pro somewhere but we could only find some like refurbished versions
00:08:21
on Best Buy we didn't look that long and that hard but um I could not find one I
00:08:26
don't know that the price difference going down to the m would be that great like I feel like these hold their value
00:08:32
pretty well so refurbished M1 is probably almost as expensive as the M3 so I would just get the M2 or the M3 and
00:08:37
that's fine if I didn't have this already but yeah that's where I'm at wow
00:08:42
all right uh couple Final Cut Pro updates yeah I I had this in here because you posted it at first I read it
00:08:49
as just iPad Final Cut stuff but it looks like it's for mac and for iPad but you were excited Mariah's excited Adam's
00:08:54
excited I'm just excited I don't use Final Cut so I'm interested what the new things are I was excited when anything
00:09:00
got improved with Final Cut for the iPad because it's final cut for the iPad that's I was hoping they would do more
00:09:06
but it wasn't actually so that keeps being my question is like we've seen we wanted final cover for iPad for so long it came out I don't know if anyone in
00:09:14
the studio really used it maybe tried it for a very short amount of time um yeah we keep seeing that Adam said he wants
00:09:20
to try and uh edit an episode of the podcast on the iPad but is this another update that's going to happen and I'm
00:09:26
just not going to hear and then next time it comes out you guys Post in Slack and then I'm like oh cool are we going
00:09:31
to do anything no it's like it added some useful new features um better
00:09:36
timeline tools and that's great but I still use so many plugins that I can't
00:09:43
really do a full edit on the iPad because it doesn't support the plugin have you done a autofocus edit on the
00:09:49
iPad no that would work though that would make that would be a cool video but an autofocus edit is actually so
00:09:55
simple I don't even need Final Cut like I could do it in iMovie weird flex but so it's like Final Cut is
00:10:02
like it's like a weird in between okay yeah I mean I'm sure it would work right
00:10:07
yeah that'd be cool but in the new updates was there any like one thing for Mac or for iPad that you were
00:10:12
specifically excited about you literally said yo when it came out cuz I said y to the headline and I saw that there was an
00:10:19
update for Final Cut for iPad so I was very excited about the prospect of a powerful new update which is like how
00:10:25
they phrased it and then I opened it and that that energy was not matched okay so
00:10:32
before the slack message you needed the like Twitter thing that's like are you sure you don't want to read this article before you post like if I had quote
00:10:38
tweeted that and just been like yo I would have been very disappointed okay yeah it was it was a pretty minor update
00:10:44
that's funny um all right next in here I have the Ram 1500 I have it in quotes EV
00:10:50
um you said you haven't heard about it it's it's really interesting I think whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa we're not going
00:10:56
to talk about 32bit float point record recording coming to logic pro so the new
00:11:02
Ram EV exactly the reaction America
00:11:08
needs um okay so the new this new pickup truck it is not a full-blown Eevee it is
00:11:15
essentially a do you remember like well the Chevy Volt did this previously but also I'm pretty sure the karma Rivero
00:11:21
did something where it has a battery pack it has electric motors this has 145
00:11:27
mil of electric range that you can completely use but also has a gas tank and then a 3.6 L V6 engine that can use
00:11:35
the gas to then send power generation back into the Electric System of the truck and then with both of them
00:11:42
together fully you can get 690 miles of range so it's a hybrid it's a hybrid
00:11:48
with all the benefits of an EV because you're using EV Motors so you have like the 0 to 60 you've got better
00:11:54
torque I mean instant torque so I guess the question is are the like with any hybrid
00:12:01
the question is are the motors powerful enough to like really be all the benefits of an EV like the Prius like
00:12:07
the Prius is this exact no no but this is different because um this is the
00:12:13
drivetrain is only electric but oh it does not connect the like the karma Rivero I'm almost
00:12:20
positive it's really hard to find information on the karma Rivero because now karma's a new company that's a little different and there's not a ton
00:12:26
of information on the older one but that was a battery with electric motors and then there was also a combustion engine
00:12:32
but it was not sending power to the wheels I believe okay maybe not the karma that's what this does it's sending
00:12:38
it's essentially charging continuing the charging of the batteries and letting you use electricity so it's an electric
00:12:44
car that also has a gas generator inside that you can use to fill the battery it
00:12:50
has an engine that sends generation power into the electric drivet drain
00:12:57
so I I think it's cool because in the pickup truck World specifically I think
00:13:03
there's first of all like when the Vault did it it only had 50 miles of EV range
00:13:09
this has 145 miles of EV range that you can do just plugging it in which is should be for most people plenty for
00:13:16
your everyday commute but when you have a truck and you're towing and you're probably going to lose quite a bit of that range in just pure electricity
00:13:23
having the backup tank of 690 Mi which is probably less toing a high payload
00:13:28
mhm I think the ability to if once a month you're towing something maybe like
00:13:34
a boat far away to a lake or something yeah I think it sounds like an interesting in between that's
00:13:39
fascinating it's a fascinating solution yeah I think when you like ask people what they think of EVS I think a lot of
00:13:45
people's most question is like so what happens when you run out of electricity or what happens like how there's no gas
00:13:51
tank what do you mean there's no gas tank so this is kind of the like it's almost the thing that they would describe without knowing that they're
00:13:57
describing it they're like what if I could just like have a backup gas and that would replenish my battery yeah and
00:14:04
I think for a pickup truck it makes the most sense in here because those are the things that maybe do take them on longer
00:14:09
than 145 mile trips or like I said when you're towing or have a high payload you start losing range pretty quickly um so
00:14:17
having that to be able to just like complete those longer trips if you're still somebody who's towing a huge
00:14:23
payload all of the time and or Neato towing capacity higher than this I think it's 14,000 lb
00:14:29
um a gas is still going to be your better option but this feels like a better in between now for I want to pick
00:14:36
up truck for some reason as my daily driver which is way too big in my opinion but anyways if you still want
00:14:43
that but then maybe you're towing your heavy boat somewhere every once in a while like yeah we've seen the the the
00:14:50
the noct range that a lot of EES get when towing like Z Zach J everything's video is a great example he did a rivan
00:14:57
toe test and basically Towing crushes your battery you're using way more
00:15:02
torque way more constant power so this pickup truck is a pretty ideal type of
00:15:09
vehicle to get this sort of treatment where like a normal SUV might not actually benefit that much from yeah and
00:15:14
most likely 90% of the time you're only using the EV battery here that you can plug in every night wake up to a whole
00:15:21
145 miles of range and then on the on the weekend it has the gas the gas is just
00:15:26
sitting there in case something happens and then you're good to go knock yourself out I think it's pretty cool question sure so basically it's just it
00:15:33
just has a generator to like replenish the battery right that's the best I think that's the correct way to think about I think that's the easiest way to
00:15:39
put it I'm sure there's something more complicated in there but like but like so if the power in my house goes out can
00:15:46
I use it as a generator I don't know if you're saying so like like kind of how the F-150 Lightning you could just it I
00:15:54
don't know if it has the ability to push the power out it would be really cool to be able to have your whatever kilowatt
00:16:01
hour battery that can do that plus turn the car on in the gas and continue to
00:16:06
power that but yeah I don't know I didn't see that feature request Ram if
00:16:11
make sure you open your garage when you do that yes cuz with the F1 lightning you don't have to you're very right you
00:16:18
know it's a little different newbie question here yeah it is Ram right is the company R not a Dodge Ram anymore
00:16:24
that's what we I made that mistake a couple weeks ago on the I think I thought it like a year ago thought it
00:16:30
was DOD funny enough you know out of all like listen we got stuff about we're
00:16:35
tech people who enjoy cars I think that's very obvious when I said it like a year ago I have to say the ram people
00:16:42
were the nicest people and correcting me so many people were like it hasn't been named Dodge in years it's just been its
00:16:49
own company but like just letting you know very nice like I know it used to be
00:16:54
that I know it's just Ram now though it wasn't like jumped down my through like the majority of the mistakes that I make
00:17:00
it was 2010 okay you have an excuse for missing 13 years of pickup trucks I will
00:17:06
say the logo is still that like big horn thing
00:17:12
that it's what it was when it was the Dodge Ram right oh man I don't want to go any further into this because the
00:17:17
potential of me making a mistake through the roof now Marquez is just trying to direct the vehicle hate to me what do
00:17:24
you think about the GTR talk about the GTR I I like I liked the GTR oh weirdly
00:17:31
on like the road or like a Tracker I think it I think it looks good I like how it
00:17:37
looks little mid episode mini trivia I've got a study here in front of me a
00:17:42
study a study whoops got I've got a study here
00:17:49
in front of me what percentage and this is by strategic Vision a auto research
00:17:55
firm mhm what percentage of Ford F-150 owners rarely or never tow anything I
00:18:02
heard this from Ford dude the Ford guy told us this I don't remember exactly what it was but it was so much higher
00:18:09
than you expected incredibly high it's got to be over 90 I think it's like over 80 RAR or I think it might be over 90
00:18:16
though I think it's probably over half never and then I think rarely would include most of the rest of
00:18:22
owners I think it's 90 my here's my the people who would answer the are they answering the Sur answering a survey yes
00:18:29
this is self-reported people if you tow it all I would assume would never say rarely they want to self-report would be
00:18:36
a bunch of people who do Towing so maybe it's higher it's 63% never or rarely never or rarely but
00:18:43
it's what's even crazier is that 52% of F-150 owners use them as a daily
00:18:49
commuter no it's true anyway this is all to say that while in our brains Towing might be important for a truck
00:18:56
uh and another another thing on that though is a lot of people who Tow and are towing a lot will go for 250 or 3
00:19:04
like they'll an upgraded trck cyber truck or yes that's the towing dream
00:19:10
yeah all those real cyber trucks out there coming soon wait okay my favorite
00:19:15
track track car news of the week I tweeted this the the remat
00:19:20
NAA said a new Guinness World Record you know how they set like the fastest 0 to 60 of a production car the fastest 0 to
00:19:27
100 fastest Z to 200 they had all these acceleration records in the straight line they said another straight line
00:19:33
acceleration record that I guess they maybe forgot to think of the first time oh it's the top speed record uh
00:19:40
backwards oh it's the fastest production car ever backwards with a top speed of
00:19:47
171 mph in a straight line backwards and I need you to just I don't even need you
00:19:53
to Picture This I actually will put a link below where you can watch them blast this car backwards at 170 mph in a
00:20:01
straight line and it is one of the most enter I don't know why you were watching it for like half an hour this morning such a funny video dud cuz they have the
00:20:06
same exact shoot type where they're like action shots of it's just this car you just picture the guy like ding like this
00:20:12
didn't you say they originally posted it in reverse which made everything look like it was going forwards and then they
00:20:18
said gotcha this is all reverse they opened with this Montage of the car going really fast in a straight line and
00:20:23
they were like all of those shots were played backwards because this car hauling backwards at 170 mph is this
00:20:32
useful no no it's not is this practical is this ever going to be a reason anyone
00:20:37
buys a car no I did a I'm trying to remember what car I reviewed on autofocus that was the fastest reversing
00:20:43
car I've ever tested and I accidentally discovered that it was within the imagining me backing down my driveway at
00:20:50
50 m hour I'm just saying this would be very useful in every zombie apocalypse movie where they're all going backwards
00:20:56
incredibly fast where they h dead end and they need to exact just hop in your hop in your $3 million hyper car and if
00:21:03
there was a car or vehicle I had during a zombie apocalypse I think the Rivera would be the last one I would pick cyber
00:21:09
TR is top of the list cyber TR is probably the top of the list it's it is
00:21:14
the top of the list yeah you'd pick an EV and a zombie apocalypse what if the electricity is out you have a better chance of finding gas reserves but
00:21:21
doesn't people don't people always say that gas pumps run electricity so if electricity is out you're doomed anyway
00:21:27
yeah well I would C it with my mouth you can siphon electricity with your
00:21:32
mouth if you try hard enough we should we should take a quick break we're going
00:21:38
uh but before we do we should of course do trivia trivia I would use the Moto
00:21:45
compacto as my zombie apocalypse vehicle that's a great option what that so in honor of David not being here these are
00:21:52
both questions that David would probably get if he was here that's you guys
00:21:57
questionable we'll see first question wait that's really unfortunate cuz what if David does get to phone in trivia I
00:22:03
will not allow it oh okay great great great great great great first question you have to ask David questions that I
00:22:09
would probably get right yeah what is Andrew's middle name okay Leica the
00:22:14
camera giant is actually a portm of two words lights the Founder's last name and
00:22:22
blank can we get a reaction of David listening to the question I didn't even hear the question I was imagining
00:22:28
David's face watching this like on the plane ride back being like I know that
00:22:34
like it's so easy it's so easy everyone should know this um okay you'll repeat
00:22:40
the question later what was that word port a port to is when you smash two words together I like that so Leica is a
00:22:47
combination of the words lights which is the Founder's last name and I think the name of the par his last name
00:22:55
isz yeah it's different I was going to say action yeah oh no that was his full
00:23:01
name his first his first name was lights lights yeah wait speaking of people who have a great last name for what they do
00:23:07
mhm there was I I find these amusing I don't know like a totally like there's a
00:23:13
ball being a basketball player exactly Eagle McMahon is a discov player his
00:23:19
first name is Eagle actually Eagle perfect I mean last name is even more impressive cuz he couldn't choose it uh
00:23:24
at the worlds tournament that I was at I saw a jersey that said frisbee on the back what it was his name no way no way
00:23:32
yeah f r i sby y yeah that's still fire that's pretty that's incredible right his life was chosen for him it was it
00:23:39
was all laid out anyway we'll think about the trivia stuff that'll be the end of the episode like usual but we'll
00:23:44
be right

apply all right welcome back let's talk about this new track weapon what see
00:25:41
what I did there no um it's a it's a camera though that you would shoot track
00:25:47
cars with oh sorry that was a stretch but you know it works in my head I thought it was pretty good the
00:25:52
stretchiest stretch the Sony Alpha 93 it was announced this week There's an event
00:25:58
for it it was earlier it has some really cool features probably primary of them
00:26:03
being that it's the world's first full-frame Global shutter camera yes which is actually super cool and
00:26:09
impressive I know very little about global shutter so can you explain it fully I think I have the general idea
00:26:14
about it but a couple examples of why it's yeah it's it's very useful especially with fast moving subjects or
00:26:22
frames basically if you think about a camera sensor being a bunch of lines of pixel
00:26:28
let's say you have a let's just say a 50 megap camera line by line technically the
00:26:33
computer inside the camera to take a picture is reading all of those lines one at a time curtain from top to bottom
00:26:39
yeah so it's not capturing everything at once and that's usually fine because it's extremely fast and nothing's really
00:26:46
moving fast enough for the top and the bottom of the frame to be different unless you have a particularly fast
00:26:52
object that's like flying through the frame where when you scan the top half
00:26:58
it's in one part of the frame and you scan the bottom half it's in another part it'll actually mess up the image yeah or there's a phenomenon called
00:27:04
rolling shutter where if you just like swipe back and forth you can kind of see
00:27:10
a little bit of a lag a little bit of a jelly as it scans the lines from top to
00:27:15
bottom okay it's funny because I didn't think of it in terms of video but the it
00:27:20
still affects video cuz like video we get that jelly effect all the time if you like whip pan something a little too hard it's like catching up with it which
00:27:27
technically still applies to photos if you're shooting a track car passing by and you're whip panning really fast and you have rolling shutter come in it'll
00:27:34
distort your image yeah and the other example I saw was like taking a photo of like a helicopter that's flying the
00:27:39
blades can turn into kind of like this warped U almost because they're spinning
00:27:44
so fast yeah it doesn't capture it all in one thing so Global shutter is opening Everything at Once Global
00:27:50
shutter is reading the entire frame at once it takes a lot of computing power and hence you usually don't see huge sensors able to do that you'll see
00:27:56
smaller sensors able to to do it this is the first full-frame Global shutter camera so even our RED cameras uh are
00:28:02
all not Global shutter actually the one that is global shutter is a smaller sensor I believe the kodo is global
00:28:08
shutter so yeah fullframe Global shutter is a big deal and so that's going to be awesome for people basically who are
00:28:14
looking to take advantage of that fast moving stuff people who are Shooting Sports people who are shooting
00:28:20
helicopters Birds Cars things like that fast moving stuff so they're saying people who might need a button that can
00:28:28
turbo boost their camera this is also a feature that would be interesting to those people funny you mention that this
00:28:35
camera has a turbo boost button um I remember the days when a when a camera
00:28:41
that could shoot like 10 frames per second was really impressive it's almost like video yeah you take it and you hear
00:28:48
and you're like dang 10 shots in one second I could just spray and like get
00:28:53
every single part of this moment and pick the perfect photo and that's kind of a strategy like people do that yeah
00:28:59
now this photo camera can shoot 20 frames per second with a special speed
00:29:06
boost button where in the middle of it if you press and hold it will
00:29:12
shoot 120 pictures every second with as long as the lens is
00:29:18
compatible yes full continuous autofocus as well yes pretty incredible I guess
00:29:25
technologically speaking in my head it makes sense if you have a video camera that can shoot 120 frames per second and
00:29:32
it's Global shutter then it should be capable of 120 photos per second but
00:29:38
opening and closing the shutter a whole bunch of times getting that fast a shutter speed that's extra math that's extra processing but it does it I don't
00:29:44
believe it has a physical shutter at all it probably just leades it leaves it open and exposes over and over again
00:29:51
really fast yeah what I was reading online is that it just it's literally just the sensor turning on and off and
00:29:56
on and off like there's nothing physical which is also why there's no banding at um High shutter speeds too yeah up to a
00:30:05
an 80 an 80,000 of a second shutter speed I don't know what you're shooting
00:30:11
the but that's incredible the noise that it makes which I guess is like you said just it turning on and off sounds like
00:30:17
if you had like an RC car that was broken and you just like press to did you hear the noise of it the turbo boot
00:30:24
Button being hit maybe maybe it does have something phys hor I'll now if anything I own made the
00:30:31
noise that that makes I would just immediately assume it was broken here's the noise that it makes when you go turbo mode so I can be shooting at the
00:30:37
speed of a 9 Mark I which is 20 frames per second I can be shooting at the speed of and then I can just press that
00:30:43
custom button to be able to go to 120 frames per second so what is that noise
00:30:48
there must be a so I guess the reason I thought it sounded weird cuz I didn't realize it was the switching between them like changes the pitch of it and
00:30:55
that changing of pitch is what sounded really strange to me but it is a constant between when you separate both
00:31:01
of them now I just feel like I'm misunderstanding some part of this camera though because that's a lot of noise for it is a lot of noise for for
00:31:07
something electronic to make it is a lot of noise but I don't think that's 120 noises in the second so yeah that sounds
00:31:15
about like 12 really yeah you think that was a yeah I do oh 120
00:31:21
htz because I have no idea below 20 htz is when your ear begins to be able to
00:31:27
hear individual pulses 20 20 below 20 below 20 is when you hear D D D D D and
00:31:34
then above 20 is when you okay so you're saying I'm not
00:31:40
hearing it but that doesn't mean I don't yeah it might be also a
00:31:45
difference between trained ears and non-trained ears also what's making the noise someone let me know please cuz now
00:31:52
I I feel like I don't know anything that is a cool feature though I think that I mean I'll literally never use it but the
00:31:57
example of like someone mid action trying to capture the exact moment that something happens like lighting a match
00:32:03
or I don't know a something compressing over time or whatever I totally get it I
00:32:08
I personally think the hockey example they used was bad because it didn't seem like anything was that minuscule
00:32:14
different between them but when I brought the a7r out to Yellowstone and the Tetons like some of the birds I were
00:32:21
shooting I was I saw them and they would take flight and I go like and I'd be like I definitely got a sweet shot and
00:32:26
then SC roll through all of them be like you have 120 out of focus shots no no not even 100 not 120 cuz it's far less
00:32:33
than that and they were in Focus but just like none of them were like the perfect wingspan or like everything
00:32:39
matching up perfectly every time I was like I wish his head was looking this way and his wing was in this position
00:32:45
from different ones you need either this camera or Google's Magic Editor to to reposition things in the
00:32:53
picture for you you it's clearly the camera's fault and not mine um it's the bird's fault so that's why I
00:32:59
need 120 friend also side note I don't think I've ever heard a hummingbird in person until last week it have you ever
00:33:08
heard a hummingbird flying I've definitely seen them but I don't know if I can specifically think of the noise
00:33:13
well under 20 htz you can't actually hear the no you hear it you just hear
00:33:19
the individual the individual be I thought I didn't see it at first so I thought I was being attacked by a giant
00:33:25
wasp oh it was that sounds yeah it like flies by you it's like and it sounded like a wasp that's a
00:33:31
horrible impression but like it sounds like a bug CU it's beating its wings so fast I just thought that was worth
00:33:37
sharing that's interesting I mean this camera would be a great camera to take a photo of a huming bird that's a fact you
00:33:45
could mute that loud sound though yeah you might scare it off yeah animals don't like that uh yeah well you need
00:33:51
the you need the super telephoto lens also so you're like kind of far away I can't hear you then you get why was that
00:33:57
not the example why was a hummingbird not the example why was it a hockey player listen I love hockey but that was a bad example hockey's pretty fast
00:34:03
moving I mean the shot that they showed in the video was just a guy shooting a puck but they should have done something crazier like someone checking someone in
00:34:09
the glass or something that would have been cool the glass shattering someone's teeth falling teeth leaving their mouth in slow motion that would have been cool
00:34:16
but they went with a pretty vanilla example anyway it's a it's a $6,000 camera it's coming out spring of next
00:34:22
year if you're interested we'll also leave a link to Sony's a A9 Mark III if
00:34:28
you want a camera with NS that's your camera yeah I'm impressed pixel 3 pixel
00:34:34
watch 3 oh I didn't what's going on with pixel watch 3it what did you think it was going to
00:34:41
be about with the pixel 3 I was like what did what happened to pixel 3 did it just get Cyanogen MOD again what's going
00:34:46
on Pixel watch 3 sorry pixel watch 3 yeah we did just review pixel Watch 2 um
00:34:53
but there was an article out the other day because of a um patent filing that
00:34:59
looks like a potential for a future um pixel watch excuse me possibly having a
00:35:05
touch sensitive bezel on the outside what could go wrong what could go wrong nothing a lot a lot um yeah I thought I
00:35:12
thought it was kind of interesting one because yeah we just did see the pixel Watch 2 but this looks like kind of an
00:35:18
in between of well one I'm confused because I don't see the digital Crown in the photo of the patent anymore but
00:35:23
maybe that's just missing there just a patent I think they'd probably yeah put in the P the Crown's I liked the crown
00:35:30
personally it's not as good as the Apple the Apple watch Crown but when I was using the pixel watch for a little bit I enjoyed the crown and I think you can
00:35:37
have both here um CU this kind of reminds me of the Touch version of the Galaxy watch classic which has the
00:35:44
physical bezel that you can spin now the reason I like that better though on the Galaxy watch is because that also acts
00:35:50
as kind of like a buffer between your screen and surfaces and I think that's super important and I think the pixel
00:35:57
watch couldn't do that because of the way it's shaped but also because of the way it's shaped I would want protection
00:36:02
on it but yeah it says sensors could respond to press tap squeeze and swipe
00:36:07
gestures and then could potentially have used for specific apps depending on what you're inside of it's interesting I I
00:36:15
guess I'll I have a couple of things that come to my mind when I see this one is it's a patent so I don't know that
00:36:22
that means pixel watch 3 as much as it's just like Hey Google had an idea bro this is the podcast this is the
00:36:28
speculation 100% confirmed for the Pix watch 3 if it goes from patent to confirmed in a product in 9 months that
00:36:34
would be so dope but you know how these timelines are so that's why I'm throwing that out there listen we're getting close to the the end of the year we got
00:36:41
to take whatever news articles we can we'll have the headline of the podcast will will happily go crazy brand new
00:36:46
pixel watch 3 but then number two we have it do what was the last pixel you could
00:36:52
squeeze this must have been four right I think the four I don't think the five had in then I don't think they brought
00:36:58
it back the squeeze feature was interesting and they got rid of it for a reason but the squeeze feature to
00:37:04
activate the assistant was decently useful I loved it it was not as
00:37:10
sensitive as potentially having a bunch of extra like swipe functions or tapping
00:37:15
functions it was mainly just like squeeze it hard enough and you get the assistant quickly very like rudimentary
00:37:22
sensor and frame type stuff that's actually that's a good point on my old gar I think it was the Vivo active 3 it had
00:37:29
a place where you could swipe on the side and if that happened to be on my wrist near the top of my hand if I
00:37:36
reached back far enough it could activate it and wind up moving things around exactly that was going to be my third thing which is the physical bezel
00:37:43
on the Galaxy watches is like ideal for me because once you I do The Accidental
00:37:48
button press all the time I've actually looked down at my Apple watch and I was like about to call Emergency Services because my wrist or my hand was pressing
00:37:55
the action button whatever the dial for too long um so this seems like potential
00:38:01
for accidental presses would be very high now all I can think about is the squeeze feature on the pixel and how
00:38:07
much I miss it it was pretty sweet I loved that but they got rid of it for a reason which is probably not a lot of
00:38:13
people use it and it was costing extra money and they decided it wasn't worth it but I used it that's very true I
00:38:19
actually used it too I don't even use a pixel anymore but yeah now it's a Swip do you a swipe up from the corner now so
00:38:25
what I used to use it for all the time was when it's cold out and I would wear gloves and I wanted to um like most of
00:38:33
the time it was like telling CLA I was on my way home that I'm leaving work walk outside squeeze text CLA I'm on my
00:38:39
way home super useful perfect yeah you can you can hold the power button to do
00:38:45
assistant now on the Zen you have a Zen phone yes hold power Buton power button is assistant I think you can map
00:38:51
actually holding power button double tapping power button and maybe even triple tapping oh no it
00:38:58
can't do that because its fingerprint is there and it just automatically brings me into but if you're wearing
00:39:06
gloves wait wait go into the power go into your settings well here I can just use a different finger now yeah I think
00:39:13
you have that now but you can you can activate that in the settings you can go to turn on power button long press cuz
00:39:18
this is what I did I think I had double pressed for camera and long press for assistant on my zen phone I'll let you do this you're the master you're the
00:39:25
master of my phone smart key that's what it's called they call it smart key so
00:39:30
you can long press change that to wake up Google assistant or what did we take
00:39:37
what did we take away from here it was your power menu cuz when you hold it it was but I still turn it off from just
00:39:43
that okay cool yeah or from your uh or your swipe down so there you go you can
00:39:48
still do the same thing it's just a smaller Target instead of squeezing the whole phone it's just the button all right
00:39:54
yeah wasn't happy about that but so yeah you know I I see this feature it's kind of cool I wonder how much of it they
00:40:01
plan to implement in a future product but I do think seeing it in a patent application looks like Google had an
00:40:07
idea yeah it I feel like it hopefully would make sense although the thing I
00:40:12
would like about the pixel watch a new one the most is to get rid of the giant bezel that kind of just folds over like
00:40:18
if the pixel watch could have the screen really like moving into the folding sides it would look so good I think it
00:40:25
already does look good so I guess rather than eliminating the bezel they're trying to make use for it which is a
00:40:31
good option but I would rather see that like be a full doed sweet screen you know I don't think the hardware is the
00:40:38
issue with the pixel watch for this feature yeah I think battery a little bit is but I think the battery in every
00:40:44
Smartwatch except for K is horrible that's true yeah I think that that was I
00:40:51
might be wrong about this as far as how late they used it but I think it was literally just a sensor inside of the
00:40:57
metal frame where when you squeeze it you're physically bending something to
00:41:02
move inside the phone that's how with the phone yeah it was from HTC remember that was HTC way so you didn't need
00:41:07
extra battery or processing it was just a new button on the phone it was just in the phone yeah it was like another
00:41:13
sensor but I mean just in general the pixel watch I don't think the reason like I don't think the hardware and how
00:41:18
it looks is is the issue in general with the watch oh totally agreed it's one of the best things about the watch yeah
00:41:25
there's a there's there's bigger fish to fry with pixel watch but I still think it's pretty good as is I I cool I was
00:41:31
going to say I do you remember the Moto 360 the the flat tire still one of my favorite looking smart watches ever I
00:41:38
think it's one of the best examples that Nostalgia doesn't always sell cuz they tried to make two more of those and no one gave a damn about them at all but
00:41:44
they didn't go OG thin bezel aesthetic cuz I really don't mind the flat tire
00:41:51
it's not the worst look at this it clearly could be so much better well because it looks like a watch yeah I can't believe it's it's very funny to me
00:41:58
seeing you look at this and be like this looks so good and wearing a square Apple watch on your oh I've never said the
00:42:04
ultra was good looking I really don't like the way the Apple watch Ultra looks anymore it's just the battery life is so
00:42:10
much better than the others I've used I think the Apple watch Ultra is the best looking Apple watch I think it looks
00:42:15
fantastic the best looking Apple watch yeah yeah but it's not as goodl looking as a Galaxy watch or a Garmin gen a Moto
00:42:23
360 that's a good looking watch Kevin wear that he would I think he would I think he's got no he would never wear
00:42:29
this but all that to say uh the patent application is interesting and we'll
00:42:35
keep an eye on it for Pixel watch of the future

00:47:01
own kpi checklist nets.com slwe form welcome back we have a new
00:47:08
YouTube feature which I'm excited for that do you know what it is no okay
00:47:13
whoops calm your excitement um I just thought it was funny it's called the play something button and it basically
00:47:20
remember we talked about stumble upon a few weeks ago yeah do you remember what stumble upon was is that where it would
00:47:25
just take you to a random website yeah so imagine you're on YouTube and you're scrolling through your homepage this is
00:47:31
how it works and you get a an option that's just like can't decide what you want to watch try to discover a new
00:47:38
video and then there's just a button that says play something and it just picks a video for you to watch so you
00:47:44
don't have to make the choice interesting now I know you have questions and I don't think I have
00:47:50
anwers we'll try first question this could be a video or a short
00:47:56
I don't know okay I didn't think of that either second question this could be it would be rough if it's a short if you're
00:48:02
so desperate to see a video that you're willing for to and then it gives you like 60 seconds video it's unclear it
00:48:09
could also go to full length videos okay okay so here's I'm gonna I'm an iPad kid I fully admit it if I'm home alone and I
00:48:17
make food it will sit and get cold while I find a video to watch I will not start
00:48:23
the plate until something is playing and that takes very long time I'm guilty 100% guilty will admit what is the
00:48:29
difference between the shorts button and this button functionally they both open up a random short well it sounds like it
00:48:36
does open up full length it does also open up a full length video okay it shouldn't open up a short at all yeah
00:48:41
because that no one the amount of times that I've searched for a YouTube short no but
00:48:47
that's not even what you're doing the amount of times that I've been like I want to watch a short about dominoes you know and then I type Domino's short it's
00:48:53
like that's literally no one's ever done that it is funny that when you when you search for a topic on YouTube you do get regular videos and shorts about that
00:49:00
topic so if you I don't mind that actually like I've watched a bunch of like reviews about a product and I run
00:49:06
out I I will start watching the shorts about it too my girlfriend and I do actually do this for shorts of talking
00:49:13
birds so yeah actually I lied just then I was going to say though but but me
00:49:18
enjoying that coming up doesn't like mean I don't disagree with you because it just means sometimes what
00:49:24
I'm searching can be accomplished in a short I was looking up the other day how to lube a
00:49:30
keyboard switch and a short came up and I was like well I'm just going to watch the short because it has to get right into doing it rather than 20 minutes of
00:49:37
which is probably also good information but right then I just really quickly wanted to try and configure it out so
00:49:42
coming up in search as an option I think great M but going back to this button my question is how much of your
00:49:50
personal algorithm is this including into it I have to assume it's got to be something no way it's fully random cuz
00:49:57
if it's fully random and I'm like oh I just made myself a sweet plate of chicken nuggets let's um let's watch
00:50:03
some and then I get the like how to fix your sink drain or or like a tutorial of like how to fix something on your house
00:50:10
13-year-old news story about something you don't care about yeah exactly so I I have to imagine but in the article that
00:50:16
I read I didn't see exactly what it was what it's going to play but then also if
00:50:21
it's referencing just your algorithm is it like going a little outside the box like Spotify DJ does take into account
00:50:27
what you're listening to but try and push you in a different direction a little bit tries to keep you on your toes yeah I feel like this is just going
00:50:36
to pick one of the like eight that's in your top recommended videos it's just going to show Mr Beast videos it's just
00:50:42
going to shuffle what was on your homepage anyway maybe pretty much wild like I'm feeling lucky for videos yeah I
00:50:48
don't know so apparently Netflix had this a few years ago and I didn't even know which makes sense cuz there's been
00:50:55
so many times I remember being in college and a bunch of us would like get together and be like oh yeah let's just throw a movie on before the end of the
00:51:01
night and then like an hour and a half later we're like let's just go to bed we still haven't picked anything know you're watch yeah um but I didn't even
00:51:08
know it was on Netflix so it's one of those things I feel like sounds like a
00:51:13
great idea and then no one uses and Google will scrap it in yeah well six
00:51:18
months we should make a bet on that how long will this watch something feature
00:51:24
last on YouTube over under 6 months so first it has to fully make it I don't think it's fully
00:51:31
available yet will it even make it that far those are two very different questions sure that's fair I think it
00:51:37
will make it through I think it'll be gone by June I agree with
00:51:42
you there's a right way to do this feature in my opinion and the right way
00:51:48
to do it is to parody a website called forgot
00:51:54
toy.com okay and forgotify [Music] docomomo ify that has zero plays wow so
00:52:04
you are inherently the first person to listen to that spot that song on Spotify
00:52:09
we're talking zero we're talking not even this mom this person's mom listened to this we're talking not even this
00:52:14
person listen to their own music on Spotify I have a problem with the name why
00:52:20
because I I get it but when I think forgot I think something that has been
00:52:25
heard and then forgotten about true so zero views means no one can forget about something they've never heard before
00:52:31
except for maybe the person who uploaded it forgot they uploaded it and I assume that if no one listens to it what's
00:52:37
stopping it from being forgotten Fair anyway but the the YouTube version of this would be killer
00:52:43
think about all the the insane stuff there is on YouTube that has zero and also think about the fact that when
00:52:48
something has zero views the algorithm will never serve it to you that needs to be the I'm feeling lucky button so so a
00:52:55
couple interesting things in there first the way I'm explained the YouTube
00:53:01
algorithm by YouTube it it will show you stuff with zero views really okay okay it just
00:53:07
doesn't necessarily know who to serve it to it's going to try Mar gets a lot of really low view videos for some lot of
00:53:14
low view videos get showed but also like it might serve it to a bunch of people and nobody clicks it cuz the thumbnail is horrible and it still has zero views
00:53:20
so maybe it tried the other thing is there is so much risky stuff on YouTube
00:53:26
with zero views that YouTube could not make that the feature they couldn't do it they like their safe lots of views
00:53:33
well reviewed content and uh if if they were to just build like just have a
00:53:38
button on the site just send me to something that no one has ever seen before that's that's pretty risky so I
00:53:45
think that might get YouTube in some trouble so they probably wouldn't do that yeah but I still love it but we'd still love it yeah I agree Alice that
00:53:51
should be one I disagree I think it should be truly freaking random totally
00:53:57
random totally random any video on YouTube even if it's a 13-year-old news totally random and you have to watch the
00:54:03
entire thing before you watch any other video I would like them to combine the truly random feature with the feature
00:54:08
that used to tell you other people who are watching the video at the same time as you cuz if you got served something truly random with like six views from
00:54:16
2017 and then you see that someone else also arrives on the same video somehow
00:54:22
by some other random pathway through the internet special moment it really feels like you
00:54:28
want live chat on video on demand videos on YouTube no I just like the Mystique
00:54:33
of seeing like a profile picture and and a username and being like I don't know how you got here you don't want to communicate you just want to see they're
00:54:39
there I just want to see they're there you just want to give them the little nod in the grocery store the little head til like in Google Docs or something
00:54:45
where it's like Anonymous lizard or like like someone else is here and I can feel that I can feel that we're on we're on
00:54:51
the same place on this very small internet together you could probably just make like a Chrome extension that fakes that but then everyone in the
00:54:58
world would have to use a Chrome extension which is tough but yeah I like that I like that feature idea um all
00:55:05
right one more thing and this is something I wanted to talk about a few weeks ago but we got really busy and now
00:55:10
it's officially out but Spotify for premium subscribers is offering 15 hours
00:55:15
of free audiobook listening per month nice I think that's awesome that's really cool uh as someone who has been
00:55:23
trying to read more and I'm putting that in air quotes because it's audiobooks yeah someone who's trying to have people
00:55:28
read to them more yes uh 15 hours is surprisingly short that's so that's what
00:55:35
I originally said but as someone who doesn't put forth the effort to actually listen to audiobooks I don't think I
00:55:43
have the right to complain about it and also I guess if I'm listening to more than 15 hours a month I deserve to be
00:55:48
paying for it probably which I guess I already am paying for Spotify Premium so do you know how much it is to get like
00:55:56
unlimited oh like to just have a spot oh I don't know if they do no I don't think they do unlimited audiobooks as far as
00:56:02
I'm aware you get the 15 hours and then if you pass that 15 hours you can pay for an extra 10 hours or you could just
00:56:08
buy the book yeah oh you buy the book like audio books are like onetime purchases so they going to give you
00:56:17
preview audible Audible has something where you pay for the subscription and you basically get one free credit a
00:56:24
month mhm so it's basically like a free book MH so it's kind of the same thing you got a free audio book per month the
00:56:30
way I was thinking of it the reason 15 hours feels low is because if I have a 1hour commute which I do unfortunately
00:56:36
but that's my fault um then I'm in the car for two hours a day so that's week
00:56:42
seven days essentially of commuting if I listen to it straight through like that
00:56:47
which doesn't seem like a lot it would be rough if you got like a 17 hour book yeah and listen to it at the
00:56:53
beginning of the month rather than in the end um I think I finally will start actually listening to some damn audio
00:56:59
books through this to be fair if you're in the US most public libraries that you
00:57:05
can sign up for free have audio books that you can do to be fair sometimes they're annoying because they only have
00:57:10
X amount of copies and you need to be put on a wait list for them and then you have X amount of time to finish it um
00:57:16
and also I think most library cards you have to like go to the library and get your library card to be part of that
00:57:22
I've tried to do it a few times and I'm too lazy but um so this is nice for me
00:57:27
the lazy man but if you really want to listen to a book for free there's generally ways you can do it through a public library yeah for sure well that's
00:57:34
all our stories for this week pretty pretty quick pretty short one but uh also some fun stuff in there and I mean
00:57:40
we got to see the pixel watch 3 though you got to see a car drive backwards as 170 mph I think that's a pretty successful week are you going to go
00:57:45
watch that video during lunch when we're done I might have it up in another tab already ready to go um that being said
00:57:51
we should definitely get to the David trivia answers sorry David trivia [Music]
00:58:00
time all right trivia time so quick update on the score Marquez with 12
00:58:07
Andrew with 10 David with one two carry
00:58:12
the one 12 it wasn't me it wasn't you but you
00:58:17
got me on the first question Leica the camera giant is
00:58:24
actually a port manau of two words lights the Founder's last name and
00:58:33
blank what is the other word that makes up the name
00:58:40
Leica David is yelling at his phone right now hey David have a safe FL back
00:58:49
see you soon
00:58:56
I'm GNA feel bad when I get this wrong flip them and read what' you say I thought you'd be
00:59:03
right so I changed my answer and one of us is right I said camera oh sorry capture I said camera is it really yep
00:59:12
let's go wait so you guys did a very good job at holding your face when I made the joke Camera Action earlier I
00:59:17
wrote down camera I was like nah too easy erased it and wrote capture good job Marquez okay that's fine I can take
00:59:24
that l next question what company did David
00:59:29
work in the server Center of oh I think I
00:59:40
know I said it first wait what you're furiously erasing
00:59:45
his answer right now second guessing himself what's he going to put watching him right he's running out of
00:59:52
time what was that my answer I've never seen anything like that before I'm confused he just made a giant
00:59:59
Circle a bunch of times so you were circling your answer flip it in okay we both said
01:00:05
Intel and you're both right what did you erase I was trying to so I think we both
01:00:11
knew it immediately and I watched you write Intel and I when I saw you wrote the E I was like I could tell too easily
01:00:16
what you wrote so I was like let me write something that's obviously wrong and I just wrote a bunch of letters and
01:00:22
I was just wanted to see your reaction and you were just like like that's wrong I was just happy that I got two points
01:00:28
this week and I wasn't thinking that deeply and then I but I had already written Intel so I just circled it oh
01:00:34
okay that was fun it was a hard to erase nice you caught up with David now you both have 12 who me and David wow oh
01:00:43
nice give David that's two bleeps this episode David I'm so
01:00:49
sorry but also we're not no I think you need to think of two Andrew questions for him
01:00:55
oh you have no idea no I think I have Andrew questions for David we have
01:01:02
way more than I forgot about that item on the Taco Bell menu top left corner
01:01:11
go I'm so I'm shocked this is taking so long the obvious answer is just the like
01:01:18

s I do want someone to blind test me so I can prove that I definitely can see
01:02:27
the difference between 60 90 and 120 I think you could do it if it was on the phone that you're used to every day I
01:02:33
think if you were the best way to I think the easiest way to test it would be on a computer and I think that's I'm
01:02:41
I'm doing scrolling so it would have to be three different phones I think 60 and 120 you could tell out 90 is the one
01:02:48
that tough I can tell there's a phone a singular phone you can set to 90 or 120 right yep yeah you
01:02:56
can do RG you could do Zen that could be a short that could be a studio short yeah yeah cuz I get so many comments of
01:03:03
people like you can't tell the difference I can't tell nobody can tell it's like bro it's it's extremely
01:03:10
obvious set your iPhone to 60 it looks horrible
