00:00:00
if there is a person a cat or a dog in the picture it will automatically capture all the depth information
00:00:05
because it recognize the subject yeah yeah if there's not it won't unless you tap on something
00:00:11
um I won't have to test it we're gonna have to try this stuff out I mean I think it'll be good I also wanna I wanna mess with the computational the AI so
00:00:18
bad like it says they said dogs cats and people yeah so if I get like a raccoon
00:00:29
I think it would still trigger yeah I bet if I search myself this is gonna be a video
00:00:35
I just see how just go to the zoo we're fine I mean you tap to focus on a ferret it'll work but like if I just
00:00:41
point it at the ferret we'll go oh it's a cat I wanna know I do think we should go to the zoo I think this is a good
00:00:47
video that would be a great studio video a tiger is a cat but like is that good anyway
00:00:56
all right what is up people of the internet welcome back to another episode of the waveform podcast we're your hosts
00:01:01
I'm Marquez I'm Andrew and I'm David and if we sound a little bit different well played we haven't said much but
00:01:08
you've already picked up on the fact that we're in a different spot than usual and if you're watching it you can tell it looks a little bit different
00:01:13
that is because we are still as we record this out in California at Apple
00:01:19
Park uh because we're a day after uh Apple's Wanderlust event so uh we've got these nice chairs
00:01:26
here we've got this nice setup courtesy of Apple's podcast studio and over here actually Adam and Ella says as of right now have
00:01:33
twice as many microphones as usual we're up we're still gonna only use one though even though I just broke that roll yeah
00:01:40
yeah they've got a podcast table they've got the producer table over there and uh we're gonna have a very fun episode with
00:01:45
a lot to talk about because you know there wasn't a whole ton of announcement products at the event but there's still
00:01:51
a lot to talk about which is interesting distinction so we'll just jump right into that stuff uh right off the top
00:01:56
what do you want to start with because I feel like I think we have to start with what they started with which is a quote from the
00:02:02
man himself I mean how cool is that thing
00:02:08
here yes but like they opened the event with a quote from you and you weren't
00:02:14
expecting that right they did yeah so I'm sitting in we kind of got like separated a little bit when we went into
00:02:19
the event kind of we were all over there I missed you guys all right mistake and we came in at the back of the line there
00:02:26
were no like PODS of seats open so we had to take what was available so I'm on one half here on another part we're all
00:02:31
spread out but I'm in this like sort of front corner and uh they open with this like heartfelt you know here's how many
00:02:37
lives the Apple watch has saved sort of classic tearjerker Apple moment for the beginning of keynote then Tim Cook comes
00:02:43
out and uh immediately does the thing that Apple loves to do which is where they sort of recap some of the stuff
00:02:49
that's happened since the last event one of them was the MacBook Air 15 going on sale and he goes straight into uh some
00:02:55
quotes and immediately says and Marquez Brownlee said the 15-inch MacBook Air is going to instantly rock it to the top of
00:03:02
the lineup to become the most popular 15-inch laptop at first one that happened I was like
00:03:08
did I say that oh yeah I did actually say that it was kind of a shortened version of what I'd said in my MacBook
00:03:13
Air uh 15 review um and then the other thing that happened was when they said that they
00:03:19
said Marquez Brownlee said and I felt all the eyes around me in the studio just kind of go like that's exactly what
00:03:25
I'm gonna ask how many people just swiveled in their seats yeah it was and I was trying to like read what was
00:03:30
happening I was like that I did say that whoa I saw a guy in front of me take a picture of it and then immediately tweet
00:03:36
it at you I saw him like pull up on Twitter and then pick you and like tweet it at you yeah I thought that was pretty
00:03:42
cool yeah yeah we so that's it's kind of a full circle moment I just I thought it was super cool obviously it was a total
00:03:47
surprise I didn't know that that was gonna happen but um you know we said some things about their products they
00:03:53
they chose a quote it was uh Tim Cook's reading it on stage that sort of
00:03:59
validated it and then my phone blew up for the next like an hour sure uh you you mentioned though on Twitter after how like a few years ago YouTube and and
00:04:07
what you started like you were doing wasn't really invited to a lot of events like this and how like now not only that
00:04:12
but you're opening the they're opening with a quote from you not only that then right after Vision Pro quotes came up
00:04:18
you were in there as well talking about the Vision Pro yeah I don't know there were more quotes it was harder to see that but yeah I think Justine was in
00:04:24
there too yeah yes again it's really cool so from a point of not being invited to that to also weird sitting in
00:04:30
a podcast Studio on Apple campus and they're helping us like like film this for us in a better spot than when we've
00:04:36
set it up in the hotel before so like thank you again this is this is really cool but yeah it's come full circle we
00:04:42
really are up as elsewhere but okay so we got a couple
00:04:47
announcements and by the way this does not mean I'm going easy on any of these things just just no no I appreciate it
00:04:53
it's a dark enough shadow that we can't see the people staring at us why we say this so we're good yeah but we got some
00:04:59
stuff I mean we knew we made our predictions and we'll go over those later but we knew we were gonna have an iPhone we knew we were gonna have an
00:05:05
Apple Watch we knew some other USB related announcements would happen what should we get through first what do you
00:05:11
think I think maybe the what yeah let's let's do it like how they yeah they also
00:05:17
did right before that they mentioned that Vision Pro was on track for early 2024 yeah which is nice I like early and
00:05:24
I like on track those are all words we appreciate when we're trying to see things that'll be January 1st I feel another producer coming because when I
00:05:30
hear early I think q1 or last day of q1 no last day of q1 is my okay yeah I
00:05:37
think that's a good that's a good Target May 31st final answer okay it probably is
00:05:44
um okay so the watches so we got two new watches we got Apple Watch series 9 and Apple watch Ultra 2. here's the thing
00:05:50
that struck me the most immediately was and I was talking to you about this David there's no outside visual cue that
00:05:59
you're wearing the new Apple watch yeah other than one new color yeah the regular Apple Watch series 9 is now in
00:06:04
pink okay very nice there's a pink one now um but yeah they didn't do the ultra
00:06:10
black the ultra looks exactly the same exactly titanium same coating same look
00:06:16
same shell same size same same look I mean it is a brighter display but it looks the same so like on the street I
00:06:22
would expect like maybe if since there's no Black Version maybe a new color button maybe something nothing same
00:06:27
exact look the original one too yeah yeah yeah so so what's new internally
00:06:34
under the hood the biggest update is the S9 system on a chip or sip as Apple the
00:06:41
rebranded to system in processor system and package for the system I had to make David explain this to me when we were
00:06:47
walking to lunch yesterday I was like yeah did they pronounce chip just was I confused no they said it again that's
00:06:53
not okay okay yeah instead of sock yeah SOC SOC sip but that's apparently a big
00:07:00
uh a big performance upgrade and a big efficiency upgrade it process things processes things faster makes the watch
00:07:06
overall faster and that's great processes data from the sensors faster which is important which we'll get to in
00:07:12
a second um and that because it's more efficient Apple says that'll allow them to crank up the brightness of the displays even
00:07:18
brighter so the s9s or the series 9 will get up to 2 000 nits and the ultra will
00:07:24
get up to 3 000 nits which makes it the brightest screen Apple has ever put in
00:07:29
anything yeah pretty cool yeah I can't wait to use it outside very smart to do that in a very small package first and
00:07:35
then eventually probably grow it up because it's going to get hot yeah um yeah well I don't want to talk too
00:07:41
much about the ultra we'll talk about brightness on Ultra later we'll stick with S9 um it is interesting to me that
00:07:47
they have this new processor it's kind of a big deal because they almost reused the same processor over and over and
00:07:53
over again they cut it differently yeah but it was pretty similar this year's a pretty big upgrade
00:08:00
um I would think they would use those efficiency gains for better battery life on the regular app so it's funny they've
00:08:05
been quoting this like 18 hour battery life for like every generation of Apple watch for years and then the ultra has
00:08:12
like the 36 hour whatever with low power mode but it's always the same and it
00:08:17
seems like because they don't incrementally improve it every year or they don't aim for some big battery bump every year that that seems like that's
00:08:24
fine yeah according I mean they haven't improved it they haven't changed it so it seems like if they get efficiency
00:08:29
gains they'll turn them into brighter screen or something else before they turn into more batteries but I think
00:08:34
most people just want better battery life I agree it's the main reason I use the ultra is because I don't have to
00:08:40
think about battery as much I get a day or two full before I have to think about charging yeah but that's just me it's
00:08:45
also a huge watch yeah so it is what it is but yeah battery life is the same game but the one interesting thing
00:08:52
really is I think it's the most interesting thing double tap okay yeah so double tap double tap is a gesture
00:09:00
that you do with the hand that is wearing the watch where in thin air you
00:09:06
simply double tap your finger and your thumb and index finger together and that will select whatever you're
00:09:12
choosing whatever is happening on the watch so whatever the primary button is in the app on the watch so if you have a
00:09:17
FaceTime call incoming and you double tap your fingers together it will accept the call on the watch if you have a
00:09:22
timer that just ended double tap it'll stop the timer all kinds of stuff like that first of all I got to try it in the
00:09:29
Hands-On area they put a watch on my wrist and they said go ahead and try it and it worked very very well in person
00:09:34
on a watch I'd never worn before so I thought that was super cool I did notice that when you put it on it just like worked immediately right which like
00:09:40
brings me back to do you remember the um was the LG phone with like the hand waving over that was the exact opposite
00:09:47
experience of like seven things I think so yeah it was that that like Penthouse in New York uh glucose the like the vein
00:09:55
ideas oh my God I have so many videos there's videos of just people like doing this over the phone like just nothing is
00:10:02
working and all the pr people at LG are just like no no no just maybe a little more like this oh that's weird it's not this is like you put the watch on and it
00:10:09
just works I think this is one of those features that's shipping like a month after release or something I think yeah so maybe it's not perfect yet but it
00:10:16
says available next month they said yeah but it worked pretty well for me the other interesting thing about that though
00:10:21
um is a lot of you might be typing already so you can stop typing saying this isn't technically new yeah it's has
00:10:28
existed as an accessibility feature in the Apple watch for years it's being moved being graduated to a primary
00:10:35
feature for everyone for a couple of reasons I think the the one that stands out is this is also the
00:10:43
selection mechanism for Apple Vision Pro tapping your fingers together while looking at something on the screen
00:10:48
selects what you're looking at yeah and I think if you get people used to that gesture early
00:10:54
great I don't know what that means if you're wearing the watch and Vision Pro at the same time that might be kind of funny I don't know what happens I mean I
00:11:01
think Apple wants a lot of cohesiveness and how you interact with its devices right pinch to zoom is like you you do
00:11:07
that on the Mac track pad on the iPhone you do it on everything hold like all
00:11:12
their all their ways that you interact with their devices same so if they can start unloading people right now with
00:11:18
the Apple watch oh no I just realized what if they make a new mouse
00:11:25
well they don't want to make a mouse because everything is just going to be shooting interesting yeah Fair yeah but
00:11:31
the other interesting thing about um so yeah so you've been able to do that but this feature is not coming to
00:11:37
older Apple watches and I found that kind of curious because it's in the accessibility settings why isn't it also graduating to a primary feature Apple
00:11:44
says when asked about that um basically the new S9 system on a chip
00:11:50
is fast enough that it's able to process all the information from those same sensors the accelerometer the gyroscope
00:11:56
the heart rate sensor faster in a way that they're comfortable making it a primary gesture where this Excel
00:12:01
accessibility feature was not a priorities yes maybe it does seem better like I think um Adam and Ellis had it
00:12:08
pulled up on their watches when we got back doesn't work well it's not it's nowhere near as good no no no I have yet
00:12:15
to have it fail a city both have showed me and it's failed both times right now
00:12:20
text me right now I was using it on my watch and it was it was not I've only been using it to
00:12:26
dismiss things yeah any other action kind of is gimmick like hit or miss but anytime I get a notification and
00:12:32
typically where I have to swipe down hit the submits do that whole thing yeah I could just double tap and it goes away I will also say the the fist clench
00:12:38
detection does not work as well as the tap detection I think the idea though is it's like if you have something going on
00:12:45
in your other hand which happens sometimes like normally for me the move is the nose I don't know how many of you
00:12:50
guys are gonna do so much dude but like all the time when I'm keeping bees in the event no in the event it was so
00:12:55
funny how the when they were talking about they're like yeah if you're walking the dog or you're drinking coffee and then in the Cinematic it was
00:13:01
like a man handling a swarm of bees like way more exciting the dog walk is a
00:13:08
totally reasonable aspect for that like that's exactly what I thought like that yeah or carrying something with the
00:13:14
other hand groceries there was one though dismissing your alarm with double tap that's dangerous that's so dangerous
00:13:20
yeah none of you guys are going to show up to work anymore because it's gonna be noon
00:13:27
and you're back I've been double tapping the snooze all morning that is a dangerous one I mean so the there is a there's kind of a moment where you
00:13:34
raised to wake and then it lights up then you double tap so if you're just like hand resting on the couch double
00:13:40
tap that's not going to do anything I think yeah I hope yeah please come to work
00:13:45
I did kind of like um Siri plus Health where you can use Siri to talk yes about
00:13:51
things like how where your moverings at and like how you slept last night like logging data with your voice I think was
00:13:57
kind of cool even though I haven't used an apple watching but like the workout stuff was my favorite part with it on
00:14:02
device series it's a pretty big deal I think the on-device stuff because of that made it really cool so that's working so much faster yeah I forgot to
00:14:09
mention the watch actually has more memory I think it's double the memory built in now so they're able to do all series queries on device yeah and
00:14:16
because it's doing everything on device and it's secure of course you can enable more stuff like ask me about my own Health Data it never has to go to the
00:14:22
cloud because right now it does a round trip whatever I think whatever you ask it yeah obviously if I ask the weather
00:14:27
in Cupertino it's going to look up the weather and bring it back down to you but if I just want to know something like one's my next calendar event
00:14:33
something like that yeah the fact that it could just sit there spinning like your internet's not good enough to tell you what's on your phone like yeah that
00:14:39
was kind of crazy I think that's really big yeah like I think that's a huge quality of life of course when Google added this to Google Assistant it was
00:14:45
huge because that way faster too you got way faster I remember they did this like four years ago maybe and I remember they
00:14:51
were like we used machine learning to condense the machine learning model to
00:14:56
be able to fit on your phone what a thug yeah so I think they're doing the same thing here which is great
00:15:02
um let's make you guys use Siri more no no I mean okay I'm editing the video
00:15:08
right now where the line I have is like Siri isn't good yet but it'll be bad way
00:15:14
faster yeah which is better but not because I think it depends on what you use it for right
00:15:21
because I recently started getting a little bit integrated into the home kit ecosystem just to test it out at home
00:15:26
because I have these like matter enabled that's probably the perfect thing for it to be better at I think so yes because I
00:15:32
just ask it to turn on my lights or open my blinds and those are pretty basic queries but it's more of the like
00:15:38
Googling things that it's bad that's why I think this will be good inside the health app though like I think this will
00:15:43
work pretty well absolutely yeah so I had two more quick things I had second
00:15:48
gen ultrawide band um which haptic plus audio feedback trying to find your phone as someone who
00:15:54
leaves my phone literally everywhere yeah that sounds awesome they on that no they also tripled it's the second gen
00:16:01
ultrawide band is has tripled the range oh really so now you can um you can
00:16:07
start finding the thing three times further away than you could for and if you use find my friends and you're like
00:16:13
in a marketer I thought that was really cool it's way easier to find people that you know so if they have either an
00:16:18
iPhone 15 which also has the second edition
00:16:25
or an Apple Watch series 9 or Ultra two then you can sort of like navigate and find your people which is which is
00:16:32
really helpful yeah yeah give it to your kid find them anywhere find my child and
00:16:38
then the other thing I had you talk about brightness but also down to one knit for a darker room I thought it was kind of cool just like the Apple watch
00:16:44
are I want to know the current number because it gets really dim it does right now what if you're in a nighttime
00:16:49
environment yeah but one net okay one is nice there's so many times just in like in bed no matter what like device I have
00:16:56
no matter how dark I put it it still feels like I'm being blinded but yeah so like I'll take anything all the way it's
00:17:02
brighter than the sun so you're good it might be so that's that's the watches
00:17:09
um I think that's basically I mean the other interesting like background thing is and we'll talk about sustainability
00:17:14
do you want to talk about that no wait wait before though that they showed some new watch bands yeah the tan Nike
00:17:22
silicone Sports band with like yeah the orange and brown dots do you know what those dots are no dirt
00:17:29
Roundup recycled other bands that's no way yeah it looks cool I don't care what it is it looks sick yeah
00:17:37
that's the uh that's the segue to sustainability because Apple had this extensive section on sustainability this
00:17:43
skit on sustainability they mentioned it countless times within individual product announcements but one of the
00:17:49
things is there's no more leather products at all in any of apples line up at all uh which as you're
00:17:56
probably thinking is like well a lot of watch bands are leather aren't they so there's a ton of new watch bands and a ton of new fibers and threads and
00:18:03
recycled materials and Nike has a recycled band and Burmese or however you say it has a bunch of new bands that
00:18:08
aren't not leather either so that's cool yeah um but yeah wow they they went yeah
00:18:13
pretty Ham on sustainability they changed it to be called Fine woven and it's like uh it's a really tight woven
00:18:20
mesh that is kind of looks like leathery in a way it I mean I've held them none
00:18:26
of them to me feel like leather they just feel different yeah and I don't know if you want to even get into the
00:18:31
Trap of making something that feels as close to leather as possible because it's never going to like feel like leather yeah so I just think like go for
00:18:37
other feels go for other materials if you want leather you can get leather but like that's right that's you won't get
00:18:44
it from Apple anymore something we were talking about was they're also replacing the leather in the Apple stores for like
00:18:49
the seats that you sit on little cubes that have leather inside of them wow they're getting rid of them and they're
00:18:56
replacing them with fine woven seats and we were talking about like is this less sustainable because they're
00:19:02
getting rid of leather and then shipping more stuff yeah over to the Apple genuine question genuine question if you
00:19:07
have leather seats in thousands of stores what's more carbon neutral leaving them there
00:19:14
or getting rid of them all and shipping a bunch of non-leather things there yeah I
00:19:21
understand the statement they don't want to have leather appear in anything they don't have leather anywhere but that thought did cross my mind it also it's
00:19:27
like a lot of quote unquote like vegan leather or leather Alternatives or just petroleum products you know what I mean
00:19:34
like they're Plastics and petroleum products so I don't I don't know what their the final woven is isn't probably
00:19:39
it seems like a lot it's probably like a I don't remember a lot it seemed like recycled was used all of the terms
00:19:45
recycled dinosaur bone juice I haven't thought
00:19:52
I want to look more into this like there is a lot of genuinely good stuff being done between the Recycled Metals yeah
00:19:59
the Recycled Plastics uh they were able to announce that the Apple watch is
00:20:04
their first quote carbon neutral product yeah now you can't technically make a
00:20:11
carbon zero product but they're able to offset the last little bit of carbon emissions that they know it contributes
00:20:18
so it's their first carbon neutral product and they want to get the whole company and everything they do to be carbon neutral by 2030. yeah I think
00:20:24
there's good stuff there yeah um and I had a meeting and a briefing where they they introduced me to way more of this stuff I just don't know enough about it
00:20:30
I want to do so much more research and talk to more people but I I had this like analogy that I made in the video
00:20:36
which is like you know those like Tick Tock videos where you see a guy like slip a homeless guy a hundred dollar
00:20:42
bill but he's also miked up and it's like a video that they're making and the comments are like you didn't really care
00:20:47
about that you just wanted to get the clicks because you're just doing it to get the video to make you look cool and
00:20:52
it's like yeah you're probably right but also someone in need just got 100 bucks and now it's technically a net positive
00:20:59
it's like okay Apple's gonna Pat himself on the back with an eight minute sketch with a ton of slides on every product
00:21:05
page and with like all the stuff they're talking about and a lot of people will rightfully say like look Apple's a huge
00:21:11
company with a ton of emissions yeah it's still true but the fact that they are making some progress and doing any
00:21:17
processing at all and making a show about it in general you might not like that but that does inspire other
00:21:23
companies to try to do the same thing sure so I can't get mad at it I still think it's a net positive it's super net
00:21:28
positive and also I thought this skit was good I liked it it was pretty funny
00:21:33
I thought it was way better I thought it was way better than any other company just being like we're doing this this and this it was funny I like seeing Tim
00:21:40
Cook yes I like seeing Tim Cook in his kit I enjoyed this game usually it's Craig we didn't see Craig this time it
00:21:46
was Tim in the skit yeah you want to guess how long this skit was Andrew I thought I looked back it was like four minutes it's five minutes yeah it was
00:21:52
five minutes I think that's reasonable it's pretty long it felt I think five minutes is reasonable before I looked it up I would have sworn it was 10 minutes
00:21:58
long I like like a 10 minute YouTube video yeah it was pretty fun I'm curious you guys are watching too much Tick Tock
00:22:04
everything's too long I want to look up how much like how many carbon offset
00:22:09
credits are integrated into this because there's there's a really good John Oliver episode on this yeah like there
00:22:15
is it's crazy how you can sort of just buy carbon credits and then it's that money is supposed to go towards like
00:22:21
offsetting carbon by like creating more sustainable things but a lot of the time it doesn't it's there's a there's so
00:22:29
many again this gets so complicated and in this skit I think they like kind of brought that up they addressed but it's
00:22:34
still yeah it was addressed a little bit but I don't but that's why it's like very hard to know as well yeah I think
00:22:40
that there are some companies who genuinely are like this operation is carbon neutral and it's totally not but
00:22:45
they just bought so many carbon credits that it can technically be on paper where like apple is at least doing like
00:22:53
sourcing new materials from recycled sources instead of the typical like
00:22:58
virgin materials like actually making parts of their supply chain more sustainable which they may also buy
00:23:05
carbon credits but it's like all of it adds up you know there was a funny one where they were like we're able to pack
00:23:11
25 more Apple watches in each shipment and I was like sure you're also saving money on those
00:23:18
shipping costs yeah so it's both good for the environment and good for apples which ultimately like it's good it's
00:23:25
ultimately good also the Apple watch box has always been way too big that thing should just be smaller in general you
00:23:30
don't need to lay them it's bigger than the iPhone it doesn't need to be laid flat it can be that box could still be
00:23:36
it might have to be like flat because of the Bands I don't believe it those big bands circle make a little box I think it
00:23:43
would be fun oh yeah the way a lot of box watches come is it basically is like wrapped around a piece of plastic and
00:23:51
then can come in like a cube you should pitch that idea to Apple and see if they're safe anyone listening back then
00:23:56
I think they're trying to like split the difference because they want to make it feel like a luxury for sure unboxing and
00:24:02
all of those it has a totally different unboxing feel yeah and people appreciate that I was gonna say you should see how like expensive Rolexes come geez I
00:24:09
actually have no idea how big the packaging is crazy really they like presented to you the guy has wearing
00:24:15
like white gloves takes it off it's like a whole thing it's like when you see a Bugatti delivery video and they like give you the key in like a briefcase and
00:24:22
it's just a tiny key all right great I get it okay well you know strike the
00:24:28
strike the balance there all right before we start our tour we just didn't say that the series nine starts at 3.99
00:24:34
oh yeah same prices same price same prices also the ultra is the same price 7.99 yep I think that's it we're gonna
00:24:40
get to the phones of course but before that we should take a quick break and before that break we should do trivia
00:24:48
well that's that feels very loud at the base trivia dude okay first question pretty
00:24:55
straightforward which I never was the first to come with FaceTime
00:25:01
I know that I think Ellis knew it I don't think instantly I have a guess do you guys know it I have it I've never
00:25:06
had this done yes wait wait a mirror we'll be real whiteboards no damn
00:25:12
I forgot oh yeah there we go we'll figure something
00:25:19
okay that works we'll figure something out we'll all like you guys have about 40 minutes
00:25:25
okay all right let's take a break we'll be right back

00:26:33
all right welcome back let's talk about I would say the headlining the flagship
00:26:38
announcement from Wunderlist event it wasn't Airbus Believe It or Not we've
00:26:43
got something bigger um no it's uh it's the iPhone we got a new iPhone really a bunch of new iPhones
00:26:48
oh isn't that exciting I guess there's a ton of new stuff all right a ton yeah okay iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus iPhone
00:26:57
15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max what should we start with the regular
00:27:02
ones so that we can get people to listen to the podcast longer retention yeah good idea retention okay iPhone 15 and
00:27:08
15 plus so these at first to me because there's so many things that Apple does where technically they're not new
00:27:14
features they just came from the pro phone of the previous year I started to write it off as not a big upgrade but then the more they got into it and then
00:27:20
once you hold it it's actually a pretty awesome thing I just don't like that they started off by saying all new
00:27:25
design because let's be real it's Metallica that's not the words slightly more curvy design it is an updated
00:27:31
design I'll let you use that word so new colors a new curve radius on the
00:27:36
aluminum all the way around wow and that no it feels different it's less sharp it does it makes a difference yeah and then
00:27:42
they have this like color infused back glass thing that they're doing where it's one piece of back one piece of
00:27:48
glass on the back yeah but it goes from a lighter satin finish which that's new for the non-pro phone satin finish yeah
00:27:55
to a darker version of the same color around the camera bumps and it's one piece of glass and it's this sweet I
00:28:01
don't know how they do it I want to point out when they were talking about how they did it they were like Dynamic infused ions and I was like I don't know
00:28:08
what you're talking about I don't know how you do it I believe you the end result is pretty cool I love that it's that it's satin now
00:28:15
um I guess without what they're saying essentially is that that clear part over the cameras they can adjust the
00:28:20
saturation of it because before it was just kind of like clear and it was kind of about whatever the color came through so this time now it looks more like a an
00:28:28
on purpose they said they either use the color into the glass metallic ion I have no idea what that means but you know it
00:28:35
looks solid there's a new pink there's a yellow that would be kind of sick actually I
00:28:41
would watch that okay yeah pink yellow blue pink yellow blue green green green and black it's just like the C it's kind
00:28:48
of cool like I like that they're adding all the fun colors to the regular line I liked the colors a lot I thought they
00:28:54
looked good yeah I definitely thought you meant C like the ocean and I was like David what are you talking about those colors kind of sound like the
00:29:00
ocean but like the iPhone 5c oh the yeah
00:29:08
I agreed weirdly enough yeah I was like sounds like the ocean to me
00:29:13
pastels totally um okay so specs wise I mean they're the same size phones same size screens what
00:29:19
you're getting now is a brighter display what is it 2000 nits now and you get the dynamic Island and I called
00:29:30
it wasn't one of the predictions from last week but it was one of the predictions from like last year two months ago okay so it officially has a
00:29:36
dynamic Island and it has the a16 bionic from the 14 pro yeah right so we've seen this before but it is an
00:29:42
improvement it is it's gonna be faster more capable uh it now also brings the
00:29:48
48 megapixel primary camera from the iPhone 14 pro yeah that was a pretty big
00:29:54
upgrade that's a nice camera that's a bigger sensor and there's a lot going on with the software so much there's a lot going on
00:30:00
with the software and this I think I kind of missed it during the keynote yeah but basically it's kicking out 24
00:30:07
megapixel images by default now not 12. so we're what we're doing before is we're getting quad pixel binning so it
00:30:13
was a 48 megapixel cameras and all of them would give us the normal 12 megapixel shots and we've seen that everywhere quad pixel binning is very
00:30:19
common what Apple's doing is not quite that actually it is that and also more
00:30:24
more so they're taking quad pixel binning 12 megapixel image combining it with
00:30:31
individual pixel 48 megapixel shot yeah merging them together to use some of the
00:30:38
light information from the 12 megapixel and the detail information from the 48 megapixel to turn it into a detailed and
00:30:44
bright 24 megapixel sort of like a hybrid Fusion photo file yeah that's the
00:30:52
default now what's the picture what's the photo I'm realizing how important those animations in the keynote are because just watching you move your
00:30:58
hands around is very confusing it's a lot it's a lot going on and I kind of miss that at first but not only are you
00:31:04
getting a new sensor and a new uh image pipeline but all that is happening now by default
00:31:09
and oh God there's so much more software with the pros but that's basically the new thing with the cameras I liked the
00:31:15
portrait mode stuff that they talked about yeah I think that was pretty cool yeah next-gen portrait mode yeah it
00:31:20
essentially is automatically capturing depth information so you don't have to turn on portrait mode it's interesting if there is a person a cat or a dog in
00:31:28
the picture it will automatically capture all the depth information because it recognizes the subject yeah yeah if there's not it won't unless you
00:31:35
tap on something if you tap it captures depth information so I think it doesn't want to unnecessarily capture that
00:31:41
information but it assumes that when you take pictures of people cats or dogs you would like it yeah so you can change the
00:31:48
focus at any point that I thought was cool how you can change Focus between subjects like as well and and change the
00:31:54
bokeh on that this is an interesting thing because we sort of hit this state at one point where you had to make
00:31:59
portrait mode because all phones were like the equivalent of F32 but now we're
00:32:05
getting these bigger sensors with these like more wide open apertures yeah so you kind of have this combination now
00:32:10
but now you can sort of take part of that computational photography that was useful before and not really anymore and
00:32:16
bring it into the like modern smartphone cameras yeah and now it's just fun it's like an enhancement it's like
00:32:21
enhancement now yeah it's a necessity it's good um I want to have to test it we're gonna
00:32:26
have to try this stuff out I mean I think it'll be good I also want to I want to mess with the computational the AI so bad like it says they said dogs
00:32:33
cats and people yeah so if I get like a raccoon
00:32:50
but like how do you know it's okay it's the same thing as uh Google photos it like you can recognize but Google photos
00:32:56
isn't 100 accurate yeah well I'll I'll get like that's true I bet if I search myself this is gonna be a video
00:33:03
I think it'll be fun to just see how just go to the zoo will work fine I mean
00:33:08
you tap to focus on a ferret it'll work but like if I just point it at the ferret we'll go oh it's a cat I wanna know I don't know I just I want what
00:33:14
about cardboard Shin you think that would work that'll work I bet that works that'll work that cutout will be perfect I do I do think we should go to the zoo
00:33:22
I think this is a good video that would be a great studio video a tiger is a cat but like is that good anyway good point
00:33:30
um these are all very important questions that need to be answered in the full review so that's why that's coming later it really makes you think um but yeah that's that's a bunch of
00:33:36
stuff I mean these are very these are relatively important things but that's not the most important thing about the new iPhone is it all right USB I forgot
00:33:43
the entire reason I'm upgrading a huge thing but forgot about that it's got a it's got a usb-c port now the iPhone it
00:33:50
was kind of funny looking at the iPhone and seeing that USB port no matter how many times I look at it it's kind of
00:33:57
still processing yeah but it's real I haven't plugged in a USBC port to one of the new ones yet but I think when I will
00:34:02
that's when it'll hit that's probably why that's when I'm like gonna be like it's real my life when I have one cable
00:34:08
we've done it which by the way we did it Society if it's not the same but one
00:34:14
cable yeah one cable for the for the Mac for the iPad for there's still other stuff by the way they need to be
00:34:19
upgraded but the new airpods case is USBC so there's airpods Pro case there your friend's Android phone whatever
00:34:26
your laptop what surface laptop you use like everything one cable yeah how sweet
00:34:31
is yeah yeah thank you Europe oh and here's another I think it's more important for us Android users is I can
00:34:38
help my friends with iPhones charge now I know how many times people come over and they're like do you have a charger yeah
00:34:44
whoops it's not that sorry Claire and I both use an Android so we're like that weird house that doesn't or you're like
00:34:50
an Uber and you're like do you have a car charger and like yeah and they hand it to you and it's a lightning cable that happens a lot to me yeah I got
00:34:56
offered the aux cable and an Uber once and I can still use that just saying oh what yeah yeah because you can do so do
00:35:02
you want the aux yeah I think for iPhone users like whatever plug it in WoW were you hearing something when that happened I think it was a New York Uber oh that's
00:35:09
interesting yeah that's weird other cool things oh are we gonna say the same thing
00:35:18
there's a fascinating new feature no you go first so so there is no reverse
00:35:23
wireless charging but there is now through that USB port reverse wired charging yeah so you know
00:35:31
you're gonna get that c to C Cable in the Box you can plug in your air pods from the
00:35:37
iPhone and it will charge up the the airpods battery from the iPhone battery yeah which is kind of cool but even
00:35:42
cooler yes you're probably wondering oh you are what happens if I plug in my friend's iPhone to my iPhone you want to
00:35:50
guess me yeah nothing there's a there's a correct
00:35:55
answer here and there's actually two answers it sounds like there's not a correct answer if there's two answers well there are two different scenarios
00:36:01
one is you plug in your friend's lightning iPhone with a USBC to lightning cable
00:36:07
in which case every single time the USBC iPhone will charge the iPhone yes I can
00:36:14
see why that no matter what the battery state is I say that because if you plug in a USBC iPhone into another USBC
00:36:23
iPhone there is a special handshake where the phones talk to each other and they go how much battery do you have and
00:36:29
the other one goes how much battery do you have and the one with more battery will charge the one with less battery
00:36:35
yeah I want to take this where one is at 50 and one is at 51. that's a great and
00:36:42
then it's just going to turn into like where you call two pizza delivery people they don't no they don't which everyone
00:36:47
has it at the beginning so you'll the funny I want to see like a phone that's at like 52 and a phone that's at 50 and
00:36:54
it just pushes all the power and yeah one will end up at 100 and the other will end up at zero one or whatever yeah
00:36:59
imagine trying to explain this to your mom I think that's still gonna work like if you just plug your phone into the other phone no but what if it goes in
00:37:05
the other direction or what if they have a lightning phone oh you would never do it if you had a battery now I'm gonna just plug it in I think this is fairly
00:37:12
Fail-Safe I think it's like I have two percent right now if you plug in your
00:37:18
phone into mine can I get some of your battery and you plug it in and it works you're like damn that's pretty cool that's pretty solid that's pretty cool
00:37:23
and now it's like an Andrew Zenfone and it explodes I don't know what happens if you plug in other non-hand Shake phones it pulls up
00:37:31
the Apple Store on my phone it just says Yeah by your mom and iPhone
00:37:39
yeah so yeah that's iPhone 15. wait so the the cool thing about that we were talking to one of the guys during the
00:37:44
briefing and he was like yeah I usually just like bringing one brick to an event so I bring a brick that is a magsafe
00:37:52
charger magsafe charges my phone and I put a USBC Cable in the phone and charge
00:37:58
like my airpods with that right and therefore then you can charge everything either like wired chaining yeah which is
00:38:05
the same thing people with reverse wireless charging were doing they were just plugging in their phone turning it over on its face and then putting the
00:38:10
wireless charger earbuds on the back but like this is wired so it's yeah four and a half Watts oh and fun thing we learned
00:38:17
is that you could charge things with lightning through the iPhone before
00:38:22
question mark I think so yeah but it was 1.5 Watts yep and they moved it to 4.5
00:38:27
right so cool so there you go four and a half watts to charge airpods can I have something irrelevant but happened during
00:38:34
the announcement for the iPhone sure yes I think my favorite transition of their
00:38:39
event was during that and it was right after which also they showed voice isolation for phone calls I think was
00:38:44
kind of cool but right after that she's like of course they have apples here and there's this box of apples and it zooms
00:38:50
into the road logo like on the apples and then goes into this like Road and then they he steps out onto the road
00:38:57
like the music at the same time I didn't the music was you know they're marimba like
00:39:03
you know that like classic iPhone the classic iPhone ringtone
00:39:12
that but slowed down
00:39:18
I think that transition and way back into the there was one where it went into somebody's watch into like the
00:39:24
Apple Fitness room to talk about Siri plus health and like zoomed into the watch and then was then inside it was
00:39:30
really cool Apple in the Transitions and they brought drones back again they did feel like they didn't do drones at dub dub it was all like visual like color
00:39:37
animations and this was we were back yeah I had a moment where I was watching the event because it was like Tim Cook came out said good morning five times
00:39:43
pieced out and then we got like the event on the stage and I had a moment where I was like do I want
00:39:50
events back where it's just like a dude on a stage giving us a live demo because that's a different vibe and it's much
00:39:56
slower yeah but as an as a person getting entertained I still really enjoy
00:40:01
this cinematic Transitions and the fun it's just so much harder to write yes like as it's happening
00:40:08
it is what it is I think they're both good yeah do you want to do prices oh yeah sorry same price same price 799
00:40:14
8.99 for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus they also mentioned something at the end it was like 800 off if you trade in an
00:40:20
iPhone that wasn't a certain carriers to certain carriers the better deals are in sync a wild deal yeah yeah but then you get
00:40:28
locked into a contract which is yeah the other part of that two-year contract or whatever yeah Boost Mobile baby I'll give you electric
00:40:35
bucks off your phone but then you'll be playing for the next two years exactly just get
00:40:40
pixel oh is there also um there's uh one more feature roadside
00:40:46
assistance via satellite oh nice so I missed your leg didn't fall off but you
00:40:52
still need roadside assistance and you're in a no service area you can get roadside assistance instead of being
00:40:58
like 9-1-1 yeah that's super just knowing you have that is huge you know what's crazy they played like the sob
00:41:05
story video of like three different people who got like lost in the Andes and almost froze to death and I was like
00:41:11
man as soon as they launched that satellite feature was that like last year yeah they were immediately probably
00:41:17
just having people going around being like have you used this yet are you shooting people did someone use this yeah because they had like three or four
00:41:24
people who were like I would have died I think damn this stories kind of just get out there like if it happens I'm sure
00:41:30
you just like tweet about it like there's an article in the paper like people just find that stuff oh you know what though they have all the
00:41:35
information of everyone that's ever used it that's also true so they could save somebody and then be like yeah can you
00:41:41
be easy in the commercial yeah you use the button they get a letter in the mail like did it work they're like well you did just save my life so I didn't work
00:41:48
did it work and do you want to be in a video yeah all right iPhone 15 Pros we have two new phones and again iPhone 15
00:41:55
Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max they are the same screen sizes but the first kind of
00:42:01
notable interesting thing is the bodies are a little bit smaller and the bezels are a little bit trimmer so they're a
00:42:06
little bit smaller in the hand thanks man I've been working out yeah that's true but also
00:42:13
actually I'll start with titanium titanium titanium now is what I felt like about it so titanium is both
00:42:20
stronger and lighter than stainless steel I only care about one of those things
00:42:25
it's lighter in the hand that's really nice to me I don't think the stronger is going to matter and my only reason is
00:42:31
because my anecdotal evidence if I've dropped my iPhone on the stainless steel rails before it just gets dented and
00:42:36
it's totally fine that's not the part that breaks yeah exactly it's the glass that brings whenever I see stuff like this it's like it's the glass that's
00:42:42
breaking that I care the most about and it's the same glass as last year as far as we can tell it's ceramic shield and all that but it's not like you have like
00:42:47
thicker like bumpers around the corners or anything it's like all right titanium is lighter and that's better well and apparently titanium scratches easier and
00:42:54
that's why they did the brushed look I like the brush look better though that's better than polished anyway I agree because it gets less fingerprints and
00:43:00
yeah I think it just looks but yeah like fingerprints in a shiny this just like will always kind of look the same which
00:43:06
I think is way better and brush metal looks sweet I think yeah so that's that it's also got a a you didn't say it's
00:43:13
space titanium oh yeah oh sorry okay this one titanium they ripped apart the
00:43:19
Mars rover to build these phones they said it's uh class five titanium alloy
00:43:24
grade five grade five
00:43:29
fifth grade titanium alloy 5G Aerospace grade it's in the Mars rover I don't
00:43:36
know where but it's in there somewhere so take that for what you want they ended the space shuttle so they could build iPhone 15 Pro I had to use the
00:43:42
metal they mine did we recycled the space shuttle yeah um there's a new set of cameras we'll talk in depth about the cameras but
00:43:49
there's also an a17 Pro chip which is a three nanometer chip it's the first time they use the word Pro in a chip which
00:43:55
leads me to believe they're gonna keep doing that um that is interesting though yeah because you know how they put the a16
00:44:01
bionic in the regular one this year that means next year the iPhone 16 regular will have a new chip called the a17.
00:44:09
they've given themselves the window to completely reuse the a16 bionic again or
00:44:15
to make an a17 bionic that is a step below what the a17 pro is now that will
00:44:20
probably be all the ones that got binned because they didn't meet the threshold for easy wanted yeah one less GPU core
00:44:27
it might happen yeah I'm not I'm not making a prediction now but I'm just saying they gave themselves that window yeah yeah
00:44:33
um but it is a very very impressive I mean it's a three nanometer chip we haven't seen that anywhere else yet allegedly pretty big performance
00:44:41
increases and also efficiency increases I hope it's uh
00:44:46
better battery life I mean I'm always open for better battery life but there's no more there's no faster charging so
00:44:51
I'm just hoping for better battery all the time um that a17 Pro chip also has a USB 3
00:44:57
controller on it which means if you're paying attention that the other chip does not
00:45:03
oh yeah the the pro iPhones will have faster wired data transfer speeds 10 gigabits per second huge upgrade over
00:45:10
USB 2 and the non-pro iPhones will have the same USB 2.0 speed that lightning
00:45:17
did 480 megabits per second not fast at all and I said this in the Impressions video
00:45:22
like most people probably don't care like who how much do you plug your phone in for real like do you really transfer
00:45:28
that much data it's going to matter for the pro phones because people are going to shoot a lot more big files prores video being the
00:45:35
one that I interface with the most and I cannot wait to not have to wait 45
00:45:40
minutes to import the 15 minutes of video I feel like the thing that takes the longest in autofocus is transferring
00:45:46
yeah footage over like you are so efficient with those you get them out before even though you start I think and
00:45:52
most of it is you waiting they literally take longer to if you broke down the pie chart of how long it takes it's like an
00:45:58
hour to shoot an hour to import and an hour to edit yeah it might be more than
00:46:05
an hour to import sometimes it's crazy yeah um so I'm happy about that it's not Thunderbolt I kind of wish they went all
00:46:11
the way and gave us Thunderbolt like 20 30 40 gigabits per second maybe they'll do that in another future version but yeah I could see them waiting to push
00:46:18
that later to make it like we went all the way big update three baby yeah I mean it's still very capable like you
00:46:24
can now do like uh Capture One sessions on the iPhone I would never do this but you could literally have like your
00:46:31
iPhone plugged into a monitor with capture one running and just like do a live photo shoot with 100 megabyte files flying back can you imagine you're like
00:46:37
I'm a professional photographer I'm using I'm having a bunch of people in my studio and I'm using my iPhone you can
00:46:43
go straight to a hard drive that's true yes yes I think it also enables 4K 60
00:46:49
prores oh yeah yeah you need it if you're hooked up to the hard drive yeah I know you love 60fps well
00:46:55
what I do love is if I use your much faster Drive yes I want to try this like a Thunderbolt drive plug it in
00:47:02
shoot prores directly to that from the iPhone unplug plug into my computer two
00:47:07
minute import I think that'll be faster than just going straight I think it will be fine okay I'm gonna try that stay
00:47:13
tuned to autofocus if I do that yeah um nice plug yeah yeah
00:47:19
the port I'm pretty good thanks yeah all right I think the camera is the last I just got that big no well there's also
00:47:26
action but we also have to talk about the colors that just you know well they're not there we haven't even talked about
00:47:31
it okay so we've got a bucket of things Ray tracing action button cameras which one
00:47:38
are we gonna do first just because it's the quickest okay all right so the cameras please explain
00:47:46
this I'm so confused so the camera guy named Ray okay so a lot of uh yeah
00:47:54
cameras yeah no oh no he was joking yeah it was a pretty bad joke what
00:48:00
I'm just saying wow okay well you're doing it so just explain yourself Raymond Trace yeah Raymond
00:48:06
Trace many years ago in 2018 or so Nvidia
00:48:11
created this thing called Ray tracing this is the worst bedtime story I've ever heard that it's to put you to sleep
00:48:17
that's the point uh so generally in video games they have to like guess where the lighting is supposed to be
00:48:23
using this like these like fake lights that don't actually emulate real light rays because doing that math with a
00:48:29
bazillion photons is really really hard so Nvidia created this thing called Ray tracing which effectively
00:48:36
um Excel it has accelerated cores to do specifically how real light bounces off
00:48:41
of objects uh people memed this for a very long time because they had this like RTX RTX
00:48:47
thing yeah um and they charged a lot more for the cards and a lot of people would probably
00:48:54
be like this is not that big of a deal I think it depends on what games you're playing there's yeah there's sums where
00:48:59
it like they have it in Minecraft now I didn't know they actually had it yeah there's a lot of games where it looks a
00:49:06
lot better there's a lot of games where you're like okay and it enabled like way more in terms of like class Reflections
00:49:12
and light Reflections and stuff like that but I think you have to be playing those like super crazy like Spider-Man
00:49:17
game Ultra red and like you'd swing by a window and like see a reflection they could do that way better than it can now
00:49:23
which it wouldn't but yes it's on the iPhone though I think the future when video games are even more immersive that
00:49:29
kind of tech will be important so it's good they're implementing it now but I think Snapdragon chips started implementing that like four years ago so
00:49:36
it coming now is a is fun I think it was already enabled it's just four times faster on the a17 pro yeah yeah it's a
00:49:43
demo that they made specifically for the pro and it ran at 30 FPS whereas the um it would have run at like six or seven
00:49:49
six or seven FPS yeah the cool thing though regarding Ray tracing is there's this whole conversation about Apple and
00:49:55
gaming and they were able to get a bunch of major Studios to Port full-fledged games
00:50:01
to the iPhone 17 15 Pro oh yeah like Resident Evil Resident Evil Village Resident Evil 4 and uh stardew Valley
00:50:10
Assassin's Creed um something one of them yeah as a non-gamer who do you care no I
00:50:19
don't have an iPhone so I don't get yeah but would you want one now on my phone not really there was a point where they
00:50:25
said like which previously was only able on consoles PCS and mac and I just
00:50:30
thought that was funny that they mentioned it on PCS before Mac yeah but that that was funny oh that was silly
00:50:37
yeah yeah um I like how Ray tracing was the easier thing to explain out of the three options you had and here we are
00:50:43
still yeah it is funny that Apple's leaning into gaming and not they did this at wwc with like they're trying to
00:50:49
make it easier to Game On Max with that metal toolkit thing um and now you can just play full-fledged console games on your phone
00:50:55
which is like I don't know people are gonna do that but I know in other markets like Asia like in China um China
00:51:01
is like something crazy like 20 of Apple's Revenue comes from China or something a lot of people play games
00:51:06
mobile gaming there mobile games is huge yeah so if they can get more people to buy iPhones because of that they're gonna update Revenue like crazy you got
00:51:13
games on your phone you have no idea all right cameras hey
00:51:19
you got games on that thing I actually think I I'm gonna just jump in just real quick to the action button I think that's a pretty quick one yeah it is a
00:51:25
new button in the same exact spot where the mute switch was on the pro iPhones and it is a customizable button and I
00:51:33
actually really like it because it's really customizable yeah it's not to the full extent that what was that button on
00:51:39
um was it a Google Assistant the Bixby but there's a couple I mean I think it was an Asus phone that let me just literally do what yeah
00:51:45
it's not full-on Zenfone but there is a nice little UI on the iPhone that lets
00:51:51
you choose what you want it to do you can hold it down and it by default will still be your mute switch or if you want
00:51:57
it can be a bunch of other stuff it can be a focus uh Focus mode changer it'll go to a specific Focus mode every time
00:52:03
you press or it can be a magnifier or it can open uh The Voice Notes app it can
00:52:08
open a camera yeah flashlight yeah flashlight um I love the voice notes app by the way yeah I think a lot of people will find
00:52:14
that useful probably do camera because that's what I do on every other phone but the most interesting one is at the
00:52:20
very end of the list is a series shortcuts list and so you can basically have that launch whatever app you want if you have a if you have a routine you
00:52:26
want to run open an app do a certain task start a new task start a new calendar event whatever you can do that
00:52:31
it might be a little delay I want to see about that I'll try in the review but it's there and it'll change based on
00:52:37
your focus mode exactly which is amazing not know that yeah so if you're in the like I have a morning Focus mode press
00:52:43
it it starts your coffee maker and then you go to work press it it starts your coffee maker it works nice you can see
00:52:50
what David does on his serious shortcuts Marcus I have a question about it yeah so you hold it and then it functions the
00:52:57
same as the silent slider does it have a really nice haptic like yeah because the
00:53:02
animation kind of implies I haven't gotten to hold it great sound effect thank you I'll do it again yeah I was
00:53:08
surprised that it's a normal button I thought it was going to be like the um MacBook tracker because I feel like them
00:53:14
kind of loading up to that but they're not quite ready for it yet and there are nice haptics behind the button if you
00:53:19
just touch the button it will do the little haptics and show you what mode you're currently in and if you long hold
00:53:25
I'm forgetting the haptic pattern it might be the same it might not be but that's when you get the real heavy haptics and it's like I'm switching so
00:53:32
and I think Dynamic Island references like what it's changing as well too there's like a nice little animation they also mapped
00:53:38
um the haptic pattern you get when you change into silent mode with the mute switch to feel exactly the same when you
00:53:45
hold that so that you can do it in your pocket just like you do in the switch uh and then when it is silenced I believe
00:53:51
it will show a little silence icon in the top left corner like yeah there's a new indicator yeah okay even even in the
00:53:57
always on display mode they want to basically make it so you're not losing anything from the MU switch so you're
00:54:03
always knowing what kind of mode it's in yeah which is kind of cool the only thing I'm missing from the mute switch is the little print of color yeah the
00:54:10
orange yeah yeah it's going to be accent color man yeah it's and you know what
00:54:16
makes me mad is it has a really nice animation screen for when you're switching things and it shows all of
00:54:21
them in different colors I was like you're just showing me how nice this one is I think if it had an accent code
00:54:27
if I had one but there there is a bunch of camera stuff per usual with the pro iPhone and
00:54:35
I'm very interested in a lot of how well some of this will work yeah so first of all new camera system new larger 48
00:54:42
megapixel main sensor it is also doing the same 24 megapixel kick out of the
00:54:48
files by default yeah cool great I think the Ultras a little bigger too there's a couple other modes a new photonic engine
00:54:53
and nighttime portrait mode shots there's a bunch of other stuff enabled here's what I was most curious by
00:55:00
and I at when I first saw this I was like I don't understand this at all but now it's way more interesting there's a 1x button and a 2X button and
00:55:08
you already know what the 2x button does right it crops into the middle 12 megapixels yeah then there's the 3x button or in this
00:55:16
case with the new 15 Pro Max a 5x button which goes all the way into the furthest
00:55:21
telephoto lens but they now also have if you press the 1X button again it will
00:55:26
zoom in to 1.2 x and if you press it again it'll zoom in to 1.5 x
00:55:33
and I was like okay is there some world where people shoot 1.5 x photos so often
00:55:39
that they want to preset for it's about the focal length yeah I think it really is oh okay okay so and this is my first
00:55:44
impression is like David is about to flip this chair I don't understand like what just crop your photo later like I
00:55:51
don't get it it's totally fine to just shoot at 1X and then crop later but it isn't what's happening it isn't
00:55:58
actually a digital crop so this is the correction so what's actually happening is Apple is doing this same like
00:56:04
processing that they're doing where you know how we're getting a 24 megapixel shot on the full 48 megapixel frame
00:56:10
they're doing that same 24 megapixel output at the 1X and again natively at
00:56:17
1.2 x and again natively at 1.5 x yeah and that's because people really like the focal lengths of 28 millimeters and
00:56:25
is it 20 24 28 28 and 35 millimeters which is 1.5 x yeah
00:56:30
so yeah if you like the focal length look of 35 millimeters over 24 you'll
00:56:39
hit that button you'll get to 1.5 x and it will not be a digital crop it will be still full quality 24 megapixel shot
00:56:46
with all the resolution that you would have gotten at 1X anyway yeah so that's pretty cool yeah you can even set your
00:56:53
default 1X button to be 1.5 x if you want it's in the settings you can just do 1.5x every time yeah
00:57:00
um so that's that's fascinating to me I don't know how well it's going to actually work I really want to test it
00:57:06
also like the 15 Pro does 3x telephoto the 15 Pro Max does 5x telephoto how do
00:57:13
they handle that gap between between 3x and 5x on the two phones we'll have to
00:57:18
see is it worse on the pro will a 4X shot be worse on the pro Max probably I feel like most people use 3x more than
00:57:25
they use 5x so it's interesting that they're doing the tetraprism yeah a 3X
00:57:31
shot will look worse on the pro Max because it doesn't have a 3X lens you'll be digitally zooming in yeah so
00:57:37
something to think about but there's a lot of new camera stuff I thought it was funny too and I now we can see where it
00:57:43
came from there was that rumor that um the pro and pro Max might get a periscope a periscope lens but now we
00:57:49
can just see that they saw a 3X and a 5x thought it was a periscope lens since still three cameras except they're just
00:57:57
two different lenses well the max is a periscope lens is it yeah I thought it was not quite a periscope
00:58:04
lens and a Tetra prism are effectively the same thing almost so a periscope lens faces 90 degrees into the side of
00:58:11
the phone and then reflects like like wants to get out yeah this tetraprism lens is still facing the same way but
00:58:18
they've compressed the the lens into this sort of like multiple Reflections and then still so it's still facing the
00:58:23
same agree balancing not that it matters to the end user but they have this three axis uh sensor shift stabilization and
00:58:29
it's still facing the same way so that's kind of cool yeah Mark has just well actually David yeah I'm pretty sure I was still wrong
00:58:37
but that's something to to note why they're naming it something different I guess Tetra prism Tetra prism cool I
00:58:43
think they just use those big words to make people think it's more advanced than it actually I think it's more prisms than a normal Periscope lens so
00:58:48
maybe you might as well Flex it I guess if you're Apple I guess it if you got it Flex it if you got it why not yeah
00:58:54
um faster lightning or faster USBC we did that same charging speeds with the cameras though with the cameras now that
00:59:00
they have log recording yeah uh you could theoretically mix it in with other footage and apple is apparently I asked
00:59:06
them about this they're apparently providing a log transformation to rec 709 which is cool yeah because uh HDR as
00:59:13
well yeah in an HDR version of that which is really awesome they said to developers which is interesting so I
00:59:19
feel like you might have to have a developer account to get it which is kind of weird well that should not
00:59:25
Marquette just broke if as a user I can shoot log as a user I should but then you have to pay the hundred dollars that
00:59:31
would be insane I mean you should give me it over on that yeah someone's gonna sell the lot for a dollar on the App Store it's gonna happen yeah anyway but
00:59:37
yeah you can shoot log if you want um oh yeah spatial video yes yes so now
00:59:43
so with Vision Pro yeah we had that Meme the dad had the Vision Pro on and was
00:59:49
pushing his face the daughter's face and her friends and they're like like birthday cake yeah he was recording
00:59:56
spatial audio on special video Yeah social video so you can only do spatial
01:00:02
video on the pro because uh the non-pro the cameras are like at a 45 degree
01:00:07
angle of each other but to do Parallax video you have to have them in the same axis so the way that the camera is set
01:00:15
up in the pros is like main camera top wide camera below telephoto on the right
01:00:21
so it uses the wide camera and the main camera and just does Parallax in that creates the 3D spatial video effect so
01:00:27
you can watch that back which is so much more natural like it's I actually think
01:00:33
the spatial video thing is kind of cool now because you can actually do it in different places without having to take the pro and strap it to your face and
01:00:40
take video of it 100 crazy people already take videos of their daughter's birthday party they take special video
01:00:45
and then they can send it to the grandma who's wearing a Vision Pro at her apartment that's interesting I will
01:00:51
forever be intrigued by the decision though to shoot that precious moment as
01:00:57
spatial video I guess the question is what is the video like you can only view it in that because it is just taking it
01:01:05
from two cameras maybe you can record from both is it taking a full quality from both I think
01:01:11
so I better I think it has the unmount of pipelines I do not know this for sure but I can assume it's shooting from both
01:01:17
cameras that you would have yes it would be nice if it was like straight to a hard drive now so you're good you know
01:01:22
how live photos like you never select live photos it just all always does in the background it would be cool if you
01:01:27
selected spatial video and it also kicked out a regular video that you get and then it's like this also has spatial
01:01:34
capabilities baked in I just I know that you can't shoot 4K 120 on
01:01:40
the phone because it doesn't process fast enough and I just think if you can't shoot 4K 60
01:01:46
twice then you can't shoot spatial 4k60 unless you have two isps which it has
01:01:52
right well you can't shoot 4K 20 120 now right so the whatever the max ability of
01:01:57
the phone is right now we'll say is 4K 60 but usually it's not like multiplicative like if you have two
01:02:03
separate isps those don't always merge together to be able to do like 4K 120. yeah well then you should be able to do
01:02:09
for 4K 120. I think the reason we can't do 4K 120 is is because we've maxed out the isps we
01:02:15
have on the phone probably true yeah so if you want to shoot 4K 60 spatial video
01:02:21
you won't have enough computing power to do it because that's two 4K 60 which is basically 4K 120 and we don't have the
01:02:28
crosstalk so you do 4K 30. just it won't be necessarily the max quality this is
01:02:34
looking I lost you guys so long ago it's interesting because you think about it from like Apple's perspective and it's like they probably want everything you
01:02:40
watch on Vision Pro to be as high frame rate to make sure you don't get dizzy so I feel like they want you to shoot 4k6
01:02:46
yeah it's like a 90 Hertz something like 90 screen yeah yeah I don't know we'll see you can buy 12 terabytes of iCloud
01:02:53
storage
01:02:59
I want to know um if the family plan will be updated of course you do because
01:03:04
they did mention that it was I have a family plan on every single every single
01:03:10
platform um with my family with your family
01:03:18
I don't have a family so but David no um anyway because I share that two two
01:03:26
terabytes of iCloud storage with my family and it would be really nice if I could use 12. and true I yeah I want to
01:03:34
see what that pricing is because they immediately talked they immediately after they said we now have up to 12 terabytes they were like so family plan
01:03:41
members can have even more storage together and I was like how much that gonna cost me though because I really
01:03:46
wanted more I'm sure yeah probably more they also mentioned I mean last thing we'll talk about on this I think is um
01:03:52
price yeah I really liked how they said same price 9.99 for pro and the max is
01:03:59
the same price as the 256 gigabyte model last time they had to explain that so hard when Jaws
01:04:05
was like so technically I think it's the same price also matches last year's price with this level of storage yeah
01:04:12
which like nand chips are like six dollars okay so just for those listening the iPhone 15 Pro is the same price as
01:04:18
the iPhone 14 pro 9.99 yeah the iPhone 15 Pro Max starts a hundred dollars more
01:04:24
than the 14 pro Max did it's 11.99 but it also starts at 256 gigs of storage
01:04:29
instead of 128. so the 256 gig phone last year was also 11.99 you just don't
01:04:34
have the ability to do 128 right so technically yeah it's the same price
01:04:41
they're upping their base margins by 100 a unit well played so interesting yeah well played also did you see um the
01:04:48
website updated that the 20 Apple polishing cloth is now compatible with the titanium iPhone
01:04:54
wait actually yeah they updated this they updated compatibility yeah
01:05:06
somebody hit enter on that and they were like yeah I knew I knew this was coming this was my job real quick I know we
01:05:12
gotta kind of like move this but yeah we didn't talk about colors what's your favorite color of pro interesting
01:05:18
question raw I think that's proof of how good the raw titanium is because the black titanium is very feels like your
01:05:25
phone and you still like it's true they look so matte black phone I changed my opinion I think fingerprints will make
01:05:30
that a little tough yeah there is also a new blue it's slightly blue but it's dark blue it's bad it's not as Pacific
01:05:37
Blue as better I think we all agree there's Better Blues but then there's white and raw and this raw titanium is
01:05:43
kind of like this warmer more natural looking titanium color I like that it looks really good it kind of reminds me
01:05:50
of this yeah watch titanium I wish they had an orange accent I wish they brought Gold Titanium which is a different
01:05:56
mixture technically but it has like this really nice gold Sheen in it and my
01:06:01
Fujifilm tx1 is Gold Titanium raw Gold Titanium dang I want my expenses I want my phone from 2023 to match my camera
01:06:09
from 1990. so what were they thinking yeah come on guys you should have been thinking 50
01:06:15
years in the past fascinating all right I think that's everything with iPhone Pro stuff maybe question mark yeah I
01:06:23
think it is I guess but we still want to talk so anyone's getting one more thing that we'll get to after the break but before we get to the break let's do one
01:06:30
more trivia question [Music]
01:06:43
where we test your attention span all right while showing off the new a16 chip
01:06:50
excuse me sip a16 sip S9 you're wrong on both ends there I think yeah is it what
01:06:57
was the A7 the A7 the new one so far
01:07:02
I guess not but I do know this 16 core neural engine yep they were showing it
01:07:08
off okay so that so that a17 Pro is what you're talking about no this was on the 15 a16 Bionic
01:07:16
[Music] okay yeah I got you it's just not new it's not new
01:07:23
that's not even the question this is ridiculous right now
01:07:30
Apple showed an example of a live voicemail transcription
01:07:35
what was the subject of the voicemail I don't even remember that hey
01:07:40
picking up a child from soccer practice B confirming a dinner reservation for
01:07:47
later that evening see lobsters
01:07:53
or D all of the above this is a voice memo it was a live
01:07:59
voicemail transcription oh interesting cool wow I feel like d is the um
01:08:06
it's the one that we're supposed to pick but it's gonna be wrong I I swear I was
01:08:11
paying attention I don't know the answer to this one I feel like I'd remember lobsters
01:08:16
I was probably taking notes here's the thing about watching a keynote and taking notes when something important is happening I'm paying attention and then
01:08:23
the second something not important is happening I'm writing down what was important or tweeting until the next important thing yeah and then I'm
01:08:28
writing that down until the next important thing so this strikes me as something while I was writing yeah I was
01:08:34
also tweeting from the studio account yeah so it sounds like a bunch of excuses yeah this is crazy yeah that's
01:08:39
what we do we make excuses it's our job well we'll answer them after the break somebody will be right okay I promise
01:08:49
we might be wrong
01:09:00
all right welcome back last but not least I take it back this is the least
01:09:05
um least important thing because this is what I talked about last week I was like is the most important thing about airpods going to be USB type c yes the
01:09:12
new airpods Pro 2 have USB type-c and it is the most important change to them asterisk but it's not the only change to
01:09:20
them because the only thing they mentioned in the community yeah that's a great Point Andrew yes it sounds like
01:09:25
you guys fought over if you were right or wrong already it's just so this is one of those things that kind of got
01:09:32
um pseudo announced it it's like when the site gets updated and the background Pages get updated but they don't mention the keynote is one of those things so to
01:09:40
make it perfectly clear airpods Pro 2 with lightning cable or
01:09:45
with lightning and wireless charging is one product we've had for a while brand new airpods Pro 2 with USBC and
01:09:53
wireless charging different product now this was not mentioned on stage but
01:10:00
the only difference to the product that actually matters is if you have an apple
01:10:06
Vision Pro headset um the new USBC cased airpods Pro 2.
01:10:14
will be capable of lossless wireless audio with single digit millisecond uh lossless uh single digit millisecond
01:10:22
response times like it's it's low latency lossless audio okay so it's going to make this like awesome you know
01:10:28
engaging like fully immersive experience if you use that it's gonna be high quality Apple made a new compression
01:10:34
made a new like codec just for this which is super super cool
01:10:39
this will not work with the current lightning airpods Pro 2. you cannot buy
01:10:47
just the case it's a new set of earbuds I tried so they're so they're the same so it's the same generation it's still
01:10:53
airpods Pro 2 but there's a new architecture there's a new something Hardware related inside that makes only
01:11:00
the new ones compatible just if you have apple Vision Pro and want to do lossless slowly and see audio if you don't
01:11:07
they're effectively the same product with a new Port can I say the official name of this product sure all right it
01:11:12
is free Engraving sure it's it's right there okay airpods
01:11:19
Pro parentheses second generation close parentheses with magsafe charging case
01:11:24
parentheses USBC closed parenthesis if I want to walk out into my Christmas
01:11:30
list is going to say yeah hey Mom I really want the airpods throw a second generation
01:11:36
I just want the USB airpods and everyone knows what you're talking about for now for now here we got a USB airpods Max I
01:11:42
guess yeah and or airpods three true yeah true yeah but for now these are the only ones with USBC
01:11:48
true yeah so an interesting Quirk just want to get that out there if anyone was thinking about getting Apple Vision Pro
01:11:53
and you just were thinking about your headphone situation those are still allegedly on track to ship early you
01:12:00
know maybe you want to pair those things up just so you know the new ones with USBC are the ones that can do the new
01:12:06
fancy trick that also makes sense like it seems like they're upgrading a lot of their products ahead of time to really
01:12:12
make sure the Vision Pro is a seamless experience for as many people as possible some people even mentioned they were like Vision Pro is so expensive
01:12:18
they could just throw in a pair of these that's been true about Chargers in the
01:12:24
phone box too it's they're just yeah they won't but yeah yeah but it's just like it's it's cool that they're upgrading everything ahead of time so
01:12:30
now people are going to be used to tapping yeah they're gonna be have these like headphones that don't have any latency all eyes are on Vision Pro yeah
01:12:38
seems like that's in Vision Pro no through Vision Pro the first product you see through
01:12:44
it's true or something I hated that thank you thanks either way that that's basically I mean we've gone through all
01:12:50
of our most interesting important announcements I think what we wanted to do now is just go back through our
01:12:56
predictions that we made last week and just see yeah how many points we racked up and if we were correct about anything's interesting I think yeah okay
01:13:02
let's do that cool prediction time prediction time all right because we're awarding trivia points here I feel
01:13:08
obliged to oh all right
01:13:13
all right Marquez last week you predicted what did I say USBC will be
01:13:19
the most important update to the new airpods after deliberating for hours
01:13:26
literal hours going back and forth we have decided we'll put this one on hold because we feel it's not clear yet if
01:13:33
that's the case that's true really yeah the only other possible new feature is something that you can only use if you
01:13:40
have a 3 500 headset that's not out yet that's awesome as of right now that's
01:13:45
fair do you feel that Apple may have some tricks up their sleeves and may roll this feature out on these buds
01:13:52
later I would say I get the point now and take the point back if something cool happens the season The Season's
01:13:58
gonna be over before then we'll revisit this at season's end and see how we I
01:14:05
don't know if the is are the Vision Pro gonna be out by Seasons then don't worry
01:14:10
about it um David you predicted that all iPhone 15s will have USBC let's go but then you
01:14:18
added that the pro will have Thunderbolt which was wrong [Music]
01:14:29
you agreed with him I did which means you are missing out on that point disagree is this a two-point question
01:14:36
though is this a two-point question no these are all All or Nothing wow which really hurt Andrew who said
01:14:42
the iPhone 15 Pro will have an action button it will not have an accent color and
01:14:48
then he went and ruined it by saying they'll put out a case that does have an accent color which they did not have we
01:14:54
looked at all of them were so obvious I think I wanted to have something at least it's been like a solid 20 minutes
01:15:00
digging did you dig I really wanted to find a case yeah instead they just made an animation in the settings with an
01:15:06
accent color but that's really funny they really were just messing with me I feel like Marquez and David you guys
01:15:12
both got one point for disagreeing with uh our deltas and
01:15:20
um despite a dedicated listener writing in and claiming they saw an Among Us
01:15:26
figure somewhere in the presentation we were not able to confirm I looked for so long John told me he saw one such a fact
01:15:32
if you out there found and Among Us dude screenshots only yeah send it in
01:15:37
otherwise for now I found RuneScape Mario Clash of Clans I found every other
01:15:43
game in that that tile game yeah I looked for so long for among
01:15:49
us maybe I'm convinced they listened to waveform and took that out yo this fine woven kind of looks like leather what
01:15:55
doesn't where I'm looking I was leaving okay thank you no no no never mind no don't you yell at him he's trying to
01:16:01
help me out here um so uh Marquez David you guys both get
01:16:07
one point for that Andrew I appreciate you sticking with me but sadly we're going down with the ship
01:16:13
um and that brings us to oh you guys each got two points then
01:16:20
yeah it is oh yeah so you guys did both get two points for your predictions way
01:16:25
to go uh I still remain scoreless what a shame but now for our actual trivia questions
01:16:33
all right I'll pick it to Adam all right so quick update on the score now that
01:16:38
you guys have gotten those points Marquez with eight Andrew with one two
01:16:44
three four every week oh he's got four and he's got four that's not bad yeah David with nine still in the lead Wow
01:16:52
first question which iPhone was the first to come thing on this Notes app
01:16:58
oh sorry I don't know how to use it can you please I didn't have my phone out wait I don't know what the notes app is
01:17:04
how do you guys pull down from Spotlight and search notes I'm gonna do reminders okay where do I draw make a shortcut
01:17:11
real quick what was the question which which iPhone was the first to come with FaceTime
01:17:20
I'm torn between I'm turned between I just press the button at the same time wait okay I want to pick the same one
01:17:26
you picked can't decide I know but are you gonna I don't know maybe
01:17:32
I'm just happy my cool iPad handle will let me flip this over so nice but then it won't be nice because it's in the
01:17:39
reminders app and it looks like yeah Marquez and I are yeah all right flip them and read please
01:17:45
the reading is very important you have a tablet in your hand so I was
01:17:53
talking four and 4S but I picked iPhone 4. correct I said iPhone 5. yes
01:18:03
I was also turned between foreign for us because that was the big new iPhone with
01:18:08
the front-facing camera and the new design and FaceTime yeah I just thought that maybe they had a new processor and
01:18:14
they were like now we can do video there there was an important new feature released on the 4S do you remember what
01:18:20
it was that was a new high-res video 4S yeah 4S Siri it was our girl Siri
01:18:25
yeah yeah I just got that that question so quickly that I thought it was too easy I was
01:18:30
like damn did I mess up he's like oh it's the iPhone 4. how do you know this I was so locked between four or four
01:18:36
yeah I just tied Andrew let's go wait Andrew what'd you put five oh you could type me
01:18:42
yeah we're next yeah okay yeah David yeah perfect question two all right all
01:18:48
right a16 bionic if that's that important to you guys
01:18:54
live voicemail transcription what was the subject a picking up a child from
01:18:59
soccer practice B a dinner reservation for later that evening
01:19:05
C lobsters 4D all of the above lobsters
01:19:11
I just like it's kind of did you see what I wrote no It's gotta be D
01:19:17
do you think is that I mean I found the note set I have the
01:19:22
voicemail in front of me and I will read it to you uh after giving you the right answer yeah it really makes me think it's D wait I need to oh my writing
01:19:30
thing went away hold on I can do it you got like three seconds you pushers down okay I did it all right
01:19:37
flip them and read whoa okay we all have different answers I really can't see your screen I wrote a
01:19:45
yeah it's d mine says this is a test note the first note and then I wrote drew a lobster that's it it was about
01:19:53
lobsters David what do you have D ah damn I'm sorry guys the voicemail on the
01:19:58
screen and this is not a joke the voicemail that someone received and was live transcribed was hey did you know
01:20:04
lobsters never stop growing like ever nature is wild
01:20:10
please never call me I'm Gonna Leave You that voicemail every
01:20:15
day next time I call Adam and it doesn't pick up that's what I'm saying yes they have apples here why of course they have
01:20:23
alcohol they have apples here uh I think that's it I think that's all I want to say today and we have a lot more of
01:20:29
course coming up it's Tech tembry I got I mean we're here at Apple Park we're gonna be back in our studio we got more to talk about yeah uh stay tuned for the
01:20:35
reviews of like everything we just talked about ideally we can answer all of our questions and uh if you do know
01:20:41

01:20:47
Twitter sorry x no Twitter no no no no it's Twitter twitter.com I think that will still work
01:20:54
