so let's get into this uh in your paper

you have this great quote that says

love that I think it explains why we all

love a good story a good biopic explain

what this research is about yeah so

first it might be worth talking about
00:00:52
what a hero's journey is right so if
00:00:54
you've ever watched a famous movie like
00:00:56
Star Wars or Harry Potter you're
00:00:58
probably familiar with this old idea of
00:01:00
a hero's journey which is there's some
00:01:02
sort of protagonist maybe it's Luke
00:01:04
Skywalker maybe it's Harry Potter maybe
00:01:06
it's someone else uh and they go through
00:01:08
a journey to reach some sort of outcome
00:01:10
at the end right um there's a shift in
00:01:12
their lives that things start ordinary
00:01:15
and then suddenly they become
00:01:16
extraordinary they go on a quest they
00:01:18
meet allies or friends along the way
00:01:20
think about Yoda or Hermione and and
00:01:22
others they deal with some challenge
00:01:24
there's some foe or enemy they must
00:01:26
overcome they undergo some
00:01:28
transformation where they change and and
00:01:30
eventually they sort of have a positive
00:01:32
outcome at the end and so things like a
00:01:34
hero's journey make stories really
00:01:36
engaging right they make movies fun to
00:01:38
watch they make books fun to read but we
00:01:40
wondered okay Beyond these things for
00:01:42
entertainment value beyond the value of
00:01:44
a hero's journey for sort of being
00:01:45
engaging could using a hero's journey
00:01:48
and the way we talk about our own lives
00:01:50
actually make us better
00:01:51
off well how did you go about studying
00:01:54
this so so we did a number of things so
00:01:56
so first really tried to quantify what
00:01:58
the hero's journey is uh we looked at a
00:02:00
variety of types of stories and content
00:02:02
to sort of figure out what the key
00:02:04
dimensions are and and there're some of
00:02:06
the things I talked about before right
00:02:07
there there needs to be a protagonist
00:02:09
that proverbial sort of hero in that
00:02:11
hero's journey there needs to be some
00:02:12
sort of shift right of going from daily
00:02:15
life and ordinary things to something
00:02:17
more unusual uh happening there needs to
00:02:19
be some sort of quest or goal uh and
00:02:22
along the way they need to overcome
00:02:23
something there need to be some sort of
00:02:25
barriers or challenges whether they may
00:02:27
be a villain or connecting with someone
00:02:29
else or creative problem solving often
00:02:31
they meet allies along the way that they
00:02:33
connect with often there's some sort of
00:02:35
transformation and there's some sort of
00:02:37
positive outcome at the end and so we
00:02:39
started by figuring out what these key
00:02:41
dimensions are looking at a lot of
00:02:42
different stories and a lot of different
00:02:44
context um and then we said okay given
00:02:46
we understand what Hero's Journeys are
00:02:48
now can we use these Journeys to to help
00:02:50
people and so we started by looking at
00:02:53
just a natural study of existing stories
00:02:55
and and meaning in life we looked at
00:02:57
hundreds of different people and we
00:02:59
measured both how they saw their lives
00:03:01
we asked them to write sort of the story
00:03:03
of their lives and we measured this
00:03:04
dimension of of a hero's journey did
00:03:06
they tend to see their lives as a hero's
00:03:08
journey or not um and then we looked at
00:03:10
how meaningful uh they saw their lives
00:03:13
looking back on sort of what they had
00:03:14
done so far uh what they had overcome uh
00:03:17
either in their personal or professional
00:03:19
lives how much meaning they saw in those
00:03:21
in those personal profal lives what we
00:03:24
found sure enough is that seeing one's
00:03:26
life as a hero's journey was related to
00:03:29
seeing it as more meaningful people who
00:03:31
had more of these things in the way they
00:03:32
saw their lives that the way they talked
00:03:34
about their stories had more allies and
00:03:37
challenges and quests and sort of
00:03:39
overcoming these barriers to reach
00:03:40
positive outcomes they tended to see
00:03:43
their lives as as more meaningful now
00:03:45
that by itself is interesting right but
00:03:47
it's not enough maybe people who tend to
00:03:49
see their lives as a hero's journey
00:03:51
naturally see their lives as more
00:03:53
meaningful but it's it's not that the
00:03:54
hero's journey made them see their lives
00:03:56
as more meaningful they're just certain
00:03:58
types of people that tend to do both
00:03:59
both and so we wondered okay could we
00:04:01
encourage people to see their lives as a
00:04:04
hero's journey and in so doing help them
00:04:07
make their own lives seem more
00:04:09
meaningful and so what we did there is
00:04:11
we prompted people to reflect on
00:04:13
important elements of their lives and
00:04:15
connect them into a compelling and
00:04:17
coherent narrative we gave them this
00:04:19
idea of a hero's journey and encouraged
00:04:21
them to see their lives along those
00:04:23
lines and what we found is sure enough
00:04:25
doing that for one set of people made
00:04:27
them see their lives as more meaningful
00:04:29
taking the same life that you may have
00:04:31
had but organizing in that way rather
00:04:33
than seeing it as sort of a random set
00:04:35
of things that occurred over time really
00:04:37
seeing it as hero's journey made one's
00:04:40
life more more meaningful and that can
00:04:42
be both in our personal or professional
00:04:44
lives right seeing your work life seeing
00:04:46
your resume for example not just as a a
00:04:48
bunch of different jobs over time but
00:04:50
thinking about okay what's the what's
00:04:52
the journey you've been on what are some
00:04:53
of the challenges you've had to overcome
00:04:55
what is that Quest or goal you're hoping
00:04:57
to achieve who are some of the allies
00:05:00
that you've met along the way how have
00:05:01
you been TR transformed by that process
00:05:04
all of those characteristics that make
00:05:05
hero's journey so engaging to listen to
00:05:07
his stories also help make our own
00:05:10
Journeys seem more meaningful and they
00:05:12
also help us be more resilient as well
00:05:14
folks that were encouraged to see one's
00:05:16
life as a hero's journey uh or one's uh
00:05:19
work Life as a hero's journey it ended
00:05:21
up making them more resilient uh as well
00:05:23
and so I think this has some important
00:05:25
implications both for our personal and
00:05:27
our professional lives tell me what the
00:05:29
takeaway from this research is when I'm
00:05:31
listening to you talk I almost feel like
00:05:33
there's a component of
00:05:34
self-confidence uh that comes along when
00:05:36
you rewrite or shame fra Fram shift your
00:05:39
own narrative instead of going oh I I
00:05:41
had this problem and I couldn't solve it
00:05:43
you can think about all the ways that
00:05:44
you met that challenge and how you
00:05:46
either overcame it or you know you're
00:05:47
like oh next time I'll do better I've
00:05:49
learned these things so it can help
00:05:50
build your self-confidence so talk about
00:05:52
what's the biggest takeaway for folks in
00:05:53
this research yeah I think the biggest
00:05:56
takeaway is this you know our lives are
00:05:58
what our lives are our work Journeys our
00:06:01
work experiences have been what what
00:06:02
they are and so we can't change what
00:06:05
they've been but we can change how we
00:06:07
see them right we can change how we
00:06:09
organize them we can change how we think
00:06:10
about them um most of us really are on a
00:06:14
journey right there have been things
00:06:15
we've done along the way but we had some
00:06:16
sort of vision of who we hope to be and
00:06:19
and maybe we've gotten there maybe we've
00:06:20
changed that Vision but we we have been
00:06:22
on a journey and so seeing Our Lives as
00:06:25
that Journey organizing it in that way
00:06:27
recognizing those challenges that we've
00:06:29
overcome those those barriers that we've
00:06:31
dealt with the ways that we've been
00:06:33
transformed the the goals that we had
00:06:35
and and how we've achieved them seeing
00:06:38
our lives in in that way can impact how
00:06:40
we feel and and how we resilient we we
00:06:42
are and So Stories aren't just fun and
00:06:45
interesting and engaging they also have
00:06:47
important implications for how we see
00:06:48
ourselves and and how we may perform in
00:06:50
the future So This research really does
00:06:53
fit squarely into social psychology but
00:06:56
can you translate for us uh the business
00:06:58
context how can people use this
00:07:00
information in a business context yeah
00:07:02
so um uh I'll start with a couple uh
00:07:05
examples and then I'll get to one that's
00:07:07
close to my own heart which is which is
00:07:08
marketing so um first just from a
00:07:10
personal well-being standpoint right
00:07:12
seeing Our Lives as these Journeys can
00:07:14
have a beneficial impact right they can
00:07:16
help us see our own lives uh as as more
00:07:19
meaningful I think secondly though right
00:07:21
we should think about how we pitch
00:07:23
ourselves how we tell our own stories
00:07:25
and and there's been a lot of interest
00:07:27
in the in the past few years in the idea
00:07:29
narratives and telling our story um uh
00:07:32
with the the Advent and sort of growth
00:07:33
of social media more people are online
00:07:36
dripping details of their life out on a
00:07:38
momentto moment or daily or weekly or or
00:07:40
monthly basis but in in dripping out
00:07:43
those moments and in talking about
00:07:44
what's happening to us we have the
00:07:46
ability to shape that narrative both
00:07:48
when we post on social media but also
00:07:50
when we go in for an interview for for
00:07:52
example what should we talk about how
00:07:55
should we frame our experience and and
00:07:57
how might the way we tell our story
00:07:58
shape how we are perceived and and so I
00:08:01
think this this work has some important
00:08:02
implications for for those types of
00:08:04
questions right when we're in an
00:08:05
interview and someone asks us about our
00:08:07
work experience not just saying well I
00:08:09
worked here and there and this other
00:08:10
place but really talking about it as a
00:08:12
journey right helping the The Listener
00:08:15
see well what quest were we on what did
00:08:17
we overcome what challenges did we deal
00:08:20
with how have we been transformed by
00:08:21
that process organizing in that coherent
00:08:24
and and engaging narrative will not only
00:08:27
be fun to listen to but will increase
00:08:29
our likelihood of of getting that job
00:08:32
and then in terms of marketing you know
00:08:34
it's interesting marketers are also
00:08:36
telling narratives and products and
00:08:37
services often feature heavily in those
00:08:40
narratives right products and services
00:08:42
help consumers solve problems and and
00:08:44
achieve their goals but there different
00:08:46
ways companies can talk about the role
00:08:48
of products and services in those
00:08:50
narratives a couple years ago I was
00:08:52
working with a large multinational uh
00:08:55
consumer packaged goods company uh and
00:08:57
they had a campaign where um uh people
00:08:59
could buy their product and be entered
00:09:01
in a chance to win a college scholarship
00:09:04
so it was sort of uh in De in the
00:09:05
developing world uh it was very hard for
00:09:08
many individuals to to get the money to
00:09:09
go to college um and this program gave
00:09:12
people an opportunity through
00:09:13
essentially a lottery or a raffle uh if
00:09:15
you bought the product you were entered
00:09:17
in this thing and you could have an
00:09:18
opportunity to go to college now this
00:09:20
program is a great program doing a lot
00:09:22
of social good but it wasn't getting a
00:09:24
lot of positive attention it wasn't
00:09:25
getting a lot of Word of Mouth people
00:09:27
weren't talking about it a lot and so
00:09:29
the company reached out and said hey how
00:09:30
can we get more earned media for what
00:09:32
we're doing how can we help this program
00:09:34
have more impact and and one thing we
00:09:36
did is we analyzed this program in terms
00:09:39
of of a hero's journey and what we
00:09:41
realized is the hero of that story was
00:09:43
the company right there was a consumer
00:09:46
the consumer had a problem right there
00:09:47
was a in some sense a challenge they
00:09:49
wanted to overcome they wanted to get
00:09:50
more educated um and the company was the
00:09:53
hero by buying the company's product the
00:09:56
consumer could uh have a positive
00:09:58
outcome but here's the problem if the
00:10:00
company's the hero that makes the
00:10:01
company look pretty good but it doesn't
00:10:03
really make people want to talk about it
00:10:05
that much right the couple people that
00:10:06
win yeah they were very excited and told
00:10:09
others but a whole bunch of people lost
00:10:11
most people didn't win the prize right
00:10:12
and so how could we get them more
00:10:14
engaged and what we realize is well a
00:10:16
better story isn't a story where the
00:10:18
product or service is the hero but
00:10:20
whether the consumer or customer is the
00:10:23
hero right that's a much more engaging
00:10:24
story where they're more likely to be a
00:10:26
part um and so rather than making sort
00:10:28
of the the company the the hero if you
00:10:30
will the the sword that slays the dragon
00:10:33
uh in this hero story what we realize is
00:10:35
hey wait a second actually the customer
00:10:37
is the hero right by voting on which
00:10:39
individual should get the opportunity to
00:10:41
go based on their story or helping
00:10:44
people in their Community get upvoted to
00:10:46
have more of a chance to win this prize
00:10:48
they can now participate they have a
00:10:50
role in this narrative and yes the
00:10:52
company's still there right the company
00:10:54
is helping but the consumer is enabling
00:10:56
this Dragon to be slayed by by
00:10:58
leveraging this program the company has
00:11:00
and so by seeing that program as more of
00:11:02
a hero's journey we enabled it to be
00:11:04
more effective overall by by
00:11:06
reconceptualizing the the way it was
00:11:08
expressed and you're actually pulling
00:11:10
the audience or the consumer into the
00:11:12
story Into the hero's journey making
00:11:14
them a part of it which would ultimately
00:11:15
make it more effective for the marketing
00:11:17
certainly right I mean I think we often
00:11:19
have to think of who is a hero in the
00:11:20
hero's journey and who is a villain
00:11:22
right there needs to be a hero and there
00:11:23
needs to be a villain that's that's
00:11:24
often what these Journeys have or a
00:11:26
challenge doesn't have to be a villain
00:11:28
um but what should the product or
00:11:30
service or different individuals play in
00:11:32
that in that Journey right allies serve
00:11:34
a nice role because they can be helpful
00:11:36
and so maybe it's better rather than the
00:11:38
company being the hero that that
00:11:40
overcomes the challenge which is a neat
00:11:42
story but doesn't really feature me as
00:11:44
the consumer maybe now hold on I'm the
00:11:46
hero in my own journey I want to
00:11:48
overcome my own personal Challenge and
00:11:50
the company is the Ally or the tool that
00:11:52
that helps me get there when you were
00:11:54
speaking earlier about uh management and
00:11:56
interviewing techniques it made me think
00:11:58
about these very common interviewing
00:12:00
questions when people go to apply for a
00:12:02
job and and you're often asked tell me
00:12:04
about a problem that you solved at work
00:12:07
or tell me how you get along with other
00:12:09
people or you your conflict resolution
00:12:11
skills so I think if you if if you think
00:12:14
about your your hero's journey story you
00:12:16
can sort of come up with better answers
00:12:18
during an interview yeah and and rather
00:12:20
than the the aners seeming like
00:12:22
individual examples of things that don't
00:12:24
fit together you can make it more of a
00:12:27
common hole right what is the story you
00:12:29
want to tell about yourself right what
00:12:31
what is the hero's journey you're on
00:12:33
what is the transformation you've
00:12:34
already uh had and what's the quest
00:12:36
you'd like to be on in the future right
00:12:39
and how does this new role help you in
00:12:41
that journey and and the more rather
00:12:43
than oh you know here's a thing that
00:12:44
happened to me the more it's part of a
00:12:46
cohesive narrative that showcases how
00:12:49
you've overcome things in the past and
00:12:50
been transformed and how you're likely
00:12:52
to do that in the future the more
00:12:54
engaging it will be for the audience and
00:12:56
and the more impactful it will be as
00:12:57
