00:00:05
So I look at the uh intersection of law,
00:00:08
finance, history and politics. It's a
00:00:10
lot of things to intersect, but the
00:00:11
intersection actually is really a rich
00:00:13
place to be. So where in in practical
00:00:15
terms that means I'm looking at the
00:00:17
institutions of banking and central
00:00:20
banking uh the way that they overlap
00:00:23
between government and and markets uh
00:00:26
and looking at how they evolve through
00:00:28
history.
00:00:33
Key takeaways are that the my my primary
00:00:37
research subject is the Federal Reserve,
00:00:39
central banking generally, but
00:00:40
especially the US Federal Reserve
00:00:42
system. And the key takeaway is that the
00:00:44
Federal Reserve is an institution that
00:00:47
has been built by people. These people
00:00:49
have desires, they have interests, they
00:00:51
have histories, and they work sometimes
00:00:54
strategically with a long-term vision of
00:00:56
what the Fed should be and what it
00:00:58
should become. And sometimes they are
00:01:00
subject to the winds of history and and
00:01:02
accident. And so, as uh a legal scholar
00:01:05
and a financial historian, it's my job
00:01:07
to look at how these subjects in history
00:01:10
built institutions that changed over
00:01:13
time. and what tools do they use
00:01:14
including law but also force of
00:01:17
personality norms traditions politics
00:01:20
and other things like
00:01:24
that. So it's it's a bit unusual uh to
00:01:28
come at these questions from the
00:01:30
backgrounds I'm coming at them from. So
00:01:32
so again I'm I'm both a financial
00:01:34
historian and a lawyer and lawyers are
00:01:36
very interested in the practical and
00:01:38
policy implications of their research.
00:01:40
Historians aren't always, in fact,
00:01:42
sometimes historians pride themselves in
00:01:44
saying, "I am disconnected from the
00:01:46
present. I'm very interested in the
00:01:47
past." And what I do is take the past,
00:01:50
what we know about these institutions
00:01:51
and where they've come from. And then
00:01:53
ask questions about the present. The
00:01:55
Federal Reserve and its policies are
00:01:56
some of the most uh debated and
00:01:59
contentious issues that we see today. It
00:02:02
wasn't always so. And to understand this
00:02:05
contentious climate, we've got to
00:02:06
understand just exactly what the Fed is,
00:02:09
who within the Fed pulls the levers of
00:02:11
power, how do they pull those levers of
00:02:14
power, and to what end? And so in my
00:02:16
work, again, this intersection of
00:02:18
history and finance and politics and law
00:02:21
gives us some of the answers that if you
00:02:23
look at at these questions just from one
00:02:24
lens, you just simply wouldn't
00:02:29
get. I'm writing a book right now that
00:02:33
is uh in its early stages that looks at
00:02:35
one of the key decades in the
00:02:37
development of central banking the world
00:02:39
over which is the 1950s. This is a
00:02:41
decade that's often overlooked when you
00:02:43
look at the history of central banking
00:02:45
and a key part of the of that decade
00:02:47
what was happening during the in the
00:02:49
United States and the Eisenhower and
00:02:51
Truman administrations was balancing
00:02:53
national policy against the threat of
00:02:56
international communism. And so my work
00:03:00
in on this project is to link our
00:03:02
interests in financial security and
00:03:04
specifically monetary stability which
00:03:07
happens inside the Federal Reserve with
00:03:09
national and international security. In
00:03:11
other words, central banking and the
00:03:12
shadow of the cold war. Uh I think that
00:03:15
these are two areas that have a lot to
00:03:16
say to each other again as a historian
00:03:18
but also in the present. There's simply
00:03:20
no question of national security in the
00:03:24
United States today that doesn't have a
00:03:25
financial component attached to it. And
00:03:27
so my my project now then is to look
00:03:30
taking again that same intersection of
00:03:32
of law, history, finance and politics
00:03:35
and see how we can put this question of
00:03:37
financial security and national security
00:03:40
in dialogue with each other.
