00:00:00
That's a tough one.
00:00:02
I'm Pat Harker. I'm the Rowan
00:00:03
Distinguished Professor and Professor of
00:00:05
Operations, Information, and Decisions
00:00:07
here at the Wharton School. And I grew
00:00:10
up right across the river in a little
00:00:12
town called Gloucester City, New Jersey,
00:00:14
just south of Camden, New Jersey. So
00:00:16
before coming back to Wharton, I was
00:00:17
president and CEO of the Federal Reserve
00:00:19
Bank of Philadelphia for 10 years. Prior
00:00:21
to that, I was president of the
00:00:23
University of Delaware right down the
00:00:24
road for eight years. And before that I
00:00:28
was here at Wharton as dean for eight
00:00:29
years. So my area of expertise is around
00:00:32
[music] managing service businesses
00:00:34
particularly financial service companies
00:00:36
both technology and process management.
00:00:39
I've had a lot of defining moments
00:00:40
throughout my career. First is being
00:00:42
here on the faculty of Wharton was a
00:00:44
real privilege and I'm just [music]
00:00:46
thankful to be back. This is where I
00:00:48
grew up as an academic. This is where I
00:00:50
grew up as a leader and I was able to
00:00:52
use those things I learned [music] when
00:00:54
I took over at the Philly Fed. My work
00:00:57
at Penn Washington is to try to bring
00:01:00
the expertise not just of the Wharton
00:01:01
School but the Penn faculty overall to
00:01:04
the table to influence policy on [music]
00:01:06
a regular basis. There are many
00:01:08
challenges we face and the academic
00:01:10
work, the leadership that we have here
00:01:12
at Penn can really contribute to forming
00:01:15
policies, practical, implementable
00:01:18
policies [music] that make sense. What
00:01:20
I'm most excited about coming back to
00:01:21
Wharton is re-engaging with the academic
00:01:23
life and being able to say some things I
00:01:26
couldn't say when I was president of the
00:01:28
Philly Fed, particularly around fiscal
00:01:31
[music] policy, the issues we're facing,
00:01:33
I think the serious issues we're facing
00:01:34
as a country. We need to come up with
00:01:36
practical solutions to solve what we're
00:01:38
[music] all facing together.
