00:00:00
Dan Loney: The Wharton School has announced a new AI and Analytics
00:00:04
Initiative. It's going to build upon the school's great success
00:00:08
in recent years around analytics and data science, but also
00:00:12
incorporate artificial intelligence to further research
00:00:15
in coursework innovation. Great to be joined here in studio by
00:00:19
Wharton Dean, Erika James. Great to see you again.
00:00:21
Erika James: Thank you. Happy to be here.
00:00:23
- I guess let's start with how this all came about in the first
00:00:25
place. - Wow.
00:00:26
So years ago, almost 20 years ago, we started work in data
00:00:31
science and analytics. Nobody knew then, maybe some people
00:00:35
knew, but I don't think people could appreciate how the world
00:00:37
would change and evolve, and the role that data science would
00:00:39
play in society. And so when generative AI became a thing
00:00:44
for the rest of us a couple of years ago, we looked and said,
00:00:48
our faculty have been doing something connected to AI,
00:00:50
Artificial Intelligence, for a while. And we've just been
00:00:53
building on the work from analytics and data science. And
00:00:57
I had an opportunity to sit in at one of our executive
00:01:00
education classrooms, which was the first AI class that we
00:01:03
offered to executives, and it was just a few months ago, and I
00:01:07
saw the reaction of the participants and how they were
00:01:10
soaking this up. And I saw how fluidly our faculty were able to
00:01:14
connect with them in artificial intelligence. And I looked
00:01:17
around and I started to see how many of our faculty were doing
00:01:20
work in this area. And I thought, we've got something here. It's
00:01:22
time to highlight this latent skill and expertise that was in
00:01:27
the Wharton School. And so, voila, here
00:01:29
we are. - So I guess then this is kind of the next natural step in
00:01:32
the process. I mean, because normally, I don't think you
00:01:36
truly associate Wharton with leading edge technology. But
00:01:40
there obviously is a path here to be developed. - Absolutely.
00:01:43
So as you, as most of our listeners know, Wharton has a
00:01:46
history, a legacy brand in the finance space. And that has
00:01:49
served us well for a very long time and will continue to serve
00:01:52
us into the future. But what Wharton has not promoted as much is
00:01:56
all the other areas in which we have expertise. And so once you
00:01:59
begin to peel the onion back and see the layers of content and
00:02:03
knowledge and expertise that exists within the school
00:02:06
already, it gives you so much more fodder to play with. And
00:02:10
right now, you know, the area is AI. It's a need in the world.
00:02:13
And it's an area that a very high significant percentage of our
00:02:16
faculty are are doing work in. - And so then
00:02:18
I guess this kind of opens the door for Wharton, but also for
00:02:22
other business schools, to really play an important role as we
00:02:26
move forward here, in helping companies understand how to best
00:02:30
use the technology. Also kind of prepare that next level of
00:02:34
future leaders as well. - Yeah, absolutely.
00:02:36
So much of what people think about artificial intelligence is
00:02:39
in the algorithm and the underlying mechanism that allows
00:02:42
this tool to do what it does and be as powerful as it is. But at
00:02:45
the end of the day, in order for it to be relevant, you've got to
00:02:49
learn how to apply the technology in meaningful ways.
00:02:52
And so business is nothing more than the utilization of tools,
00:02:55
products, services, technology, to deliver some value to some
00:02:59
entity. And artificial intelligence is an opportunity
00:03:02
to create significant value if you know how to use it. And so
00:03:05
schools like Wharton and other business schools have the
00:03:08
opportunity to leverage both an understanding of the algorithms
00:03:12
behind the technology, but also the application of it so that it
00:03:16
really is being able to be used for leaders and decision makers
00:03:20
in the corporate sector, in the nonprofit sector, to make their
00:03:23
businesses more valuable. - We talked
00:03:25
about the surge that we're seeing around businesses using
00:03:28
AI. This is the same type of process, but obviously in the
00:03:33
education space.
00:03:34
- Yes. And so I look at, internally, my role as dean. I
00:03:37
am a leader of an institution that requires the same sorts of
00:03:42
activity that you would have in a for profit space. And so I
00:03:45
have to think, how do we make the Wharton School more
00:03:48
efficient and more productive, and how are ways that we can
00:03:51
leverage the same technology that we're teaching other
00:03:54
executives to use for our own purposes. And so looking at, from
00:03:57
the admissions process, from the alumni engagement cycle. All of
00:04:01
those things have an opportunity to benefit from this tool just
00:04:04
like decision makers in the corporate sector. - So part
00:04:07
of this is also, and this was part of the announcement, a
00:04:10
collaboration with OpenAI in the process of developing this.
00:04:14
Tell us more about that. - Yeah, so
00:04:15
we're really pleased to be the first business school to partner
00:04:18
with OpenAI using their technology ChatGPT. And we've
00:04:22
created a license for all of our incoming MBA students, both at
00:04:26
the full time and the Executive MBA programs. And the goal isn't
00:04:29
to mandate that they use this, but create an opportunity for them
00:04:33
to have access and exposure in a really safe environment, because
00:04:36
the OpenAI platform protects the security of the information
00:04:40
that we're going to be using. And so as an academic
00:04:42
institution, that's obviously very important to us. And so
00:04:44
it's, I think, a really wonderful partnership. And we're
00:04:47
pleased to be able to have such a prominent company to be able
00:04:50
to do this with.
00:04:51
- So what are some of the areas that faculty are looking at and
00:04:54
studying AI, and especially the impact that it's going to have
00:04:59
or maybe already is having on business right now?
00:05:02
- So you're going to get me in trouble, because there are way
00:05:03
more faculty doing work in this area that I can -- than I'm going
00:05:06
to be able to give credit to. But I'll highlight just a few.
00:05:10
So our faculty member, Stefano Puntoni, and Bob Meyer in
00:05:14
marketing, are doing a number of studies on artificial
00:05:17
intelligence and wellbeing, which isn't necessarily a
00:05:19
combination of constructs that you would put together. But they
00:05:23
were looking at companion chatbots and determining their
00:05:26
effectiveness in engaging with people experiencing mental
00:05:28
health crises. And we found some things that are, I think, going
00:05:32
to be surprising to the average listener about the
00:05:35
effectiveness of those chatbots being able to determine signs of
00:05:38
distress and human wellbeing. Another area of focus is by
00:05:42
Professor Hamsa Bastani, who's doing work on the escalation of
00:05:47
COVID cases. So when COVID was the thing in the early -- in 2020,
00:05:51
and looking at how it has traveled in Greece along the
00:05:54
borders, and the allocation of limited testing supplies, and
00:06:00
how that determines whether or not the COVID will expand or
00:06:05
retreat, and making those kinds of determinations. And then
00:06:08
Sonny Tambe's research focuses on how AI is
00:06:11
transforming management, and how the current workforce can
00:06:14
upskill to become algorithmic bilinguals. So those are just a
00:06:18
few examples of some of the really cutting edge scholarship
00:06:22
that our faculty are doing in this regard. - So
00:06:24
it's obviously a very unique time as we move forward here.
00:06:26
How do you think then that AI is going to potentially impact
00:06:32
the school, but even beyond that, and this goes to a little bit of
00:06:35
what you were saying before, your role as Dean here at Wharton?
00:06:39
Because there's a lot in play here. - Yeah.
00:06:42
So it's going to affect the school in a couple of ways,
00:06:45
probably most pronounced is, given the significant number of
00:06:50
people that we have focused on this area, it's going to create
00:06:52
a different brand, if you will, for the school. So it's not only
00:06:56
Wharton, the finance school, but Wharton, the AI school. And
00:06:59
that's going to expose us to different opportunities for
00:07:02
corporate partnerships. It's going to expose us to people who
00:07:05
will choose us now than they might have before, not knowing
00:07:09
that we had this level of expertise. So it could
00:07:11
ultimately fundamentally change the opportunity for the
00:07:14
relationships that we have, both for students, faculty, and with our
00:07:18
alumni and corporate clients. But more practically, as a dean,
00:07:23
and as a leader, I always have to be thinking about how to make
00:07:26
this school better. And AI is a tool to make things better. It
00:07:30
can make things better. And I want to be cautious, because as we
00:07:33
know, there are some ethical and other concerns that we've got to
00:07:36
be mindful of. And so thinking about the way in which AI is
00:07:40
influencing higher education, the way in which AI is
00:07:43
influencing the work that we are preparing our students to go out
00:07:47
and do, all of that, The curricular changes in
00:07:49
innovation through AI in what we teach and how we deliver what
00:07:53
we teach. All of that is going to fundamentally, I think,
00:07:56
influence how we think about the school going forward. - It's
00:07:59
amazing
00:08:00
to see all of the change that has gone on in the last few
00:08:03
years, and obviously all the change that's going to be
00:08:05
happening here at the Wharton School. Great to see you again.
00:08:08
Thanks very much. - Thank you.
00:08:09
- You go it. Dean Erika James of the Wharton School.
