00:00:05
so could you tell us a little bit about
00:00:07
how you're so productive what are your
00:00:08
secrets you can't edit a blank page so
00:00:11
sometimes I think to myself I have a
00:00:14
project and I don't have any words and
00:00:18
there's nothing for me to edit so why
00:00:20
don't I put words and then I'll have
00:00:22
something I can edit and it'll sometimes
00:00:25
start like with a paragraph that's
00:00:27
terrible and I'll give up or
00:00:30
the next paragraph won't be terrible and
00:00:32
I'll have something to add up or
00:00:35
sometimes I ever feel this that you wake
00:00:37
up in the morning and you're kind of
00:00:39
excited that you're there and you know
00:00:42
you're dis habituated because you were
00:00:44
asleep and you didn't see how amazing
00:00:46
life is and so and you have a project
00:00:48
and you're in a mood to take a risk and
00:00:51
you think maybe is this completely
00:00:54
idiosyncratic and a little crazy but you
00:00:57
might think I I have I'm in a mind to
00:00:59
take set to take a risk so and then
00:01:02
something will be a first paragraph
00:01:03
that's in your head and then you can
00:01:06
write that first paragraph or even it
00:01:08
can be a first sentence and if it makes
00:01:11
you if you have excitement and uh a
00:01:16
feeling of Mischief about it then there
00:01:18
can be momentum to keep going I mean
00:01:21
everyone's different or or you'll write
00:01:24
that sentence and that page and you'll
00:01:26
say no that won't work and then try
00:01:29
something else
00:01:31
I have uh a a great willingness to give
00:01:35
up on a project that isn't working which
00:01:38
is
00:01:38
freeing and and also if I have an hour
00:01:42
to write something and I have something
00:01:44
to say I I will do that so I don't have
00:01:48
high it's like a a sprinter who can get
00:01:51
going pretty quick maybe not that fast
00:01:54
but can get going pretty quick and if I
00:01:56
get an email from an amazing co-author
00:01:59
who's asked me to track changes what am
00:02:01
I going to do go to lunch I'm going to
00:02:03
track changes I think Thor says you
00:02:06
think with your fingers that's also true
00:02:09
that's completely true uh and maybe
00:02:10
that's good advice for for those of us
00:02:12
who struggle to write is just you know
00:02:13
sit down and think with your fingers I
00:02:15
can say I've written a lot with Danny
00:02:17
conoman and we have very different
00:02:19
styles he's also a complete hero and he
00:02:24
likes to talk and and he said early on
00:02:28
in our collaboration he said I think by
00:02:31
talking you think by
00:02:32
writing complet like a complimentary um
00:02:36
relationship yeah especially if you end
00:02:38
up writing the paper um so uh I want to
00:02:42
know about your morning routine because
00:02:43
on the topic of productivity I want to
00:02:45
know what you eat for
00:02:47
breakfast and you know like if this were
00:02:49
Tim Ferris and we were asking you about
00:02:52
like like like so yeah tell us your
00:02:54
morning routine okay and also when you
00:02:56
wake up in the morning so if I'm in
00:02:59
Washington most of the time and in
00:03:01
Cambridge some of the time if I'm in
00:03:04
Washington my do my laborator retrievers
00:03:06
will wake me up typically at
00:03:10
5:30 uh the boy lab will bark and the
00:03:13
girl lab will uh forgive the word use
00:03:17
her tongue and that means uh I need to
00:03:20
get up because they need excitement and
00:03:23
then I'll be up at 5:30 and maybe go
00:03:25
back to sleep after I fed them and then
00:03:27
get up at 6:30 or 7:00 then I'll have
00:03:30
one cup of coffee and maybe if there's a
00:03:35
doughnut or something sweet I'll have
00:03:37
that and it and then I I would like to
00:03:42
get writing and I usually have energy
00:03:45
for that at like after the after the
00:03:48
coffee 7:30 so what's easy for me is if
00:03:52
I have a Dr I right now have a book
00:03:54
that's exists but it's bad and I'm
00:03:58
having fun cuz I'm hopeful I can make it
00:04:01
at
00:04:02
least uh not good as high aspiration but
00:04:06
I I'm hopeful in the short run it will
00:04:08
be okay I'm liking that to start
00:04:11
something new it's harder and you you of
00:04:13
course you need to have an idea and
00:04:17
something to
00:04:23
inspire
