00:00:17
you've been dedicated to the microcredit
00:00:20
concept long enough to be able to
00:00:22
observe the children of that first
00:00:24
generation of women that you helped
00:00:26
going back to 1976 and the $27 that you
00:00:29
loaned to 4 2 women in a small village
00:00:32
how are these children who are now
00:00:34
adults doing are they creating jobs for
00:00:36
other people are they starting their own
00:00:37
companies are they adding societal
00:00:39
wealth to the community and just by the
00:00:42
very fact that these this new generation
00:00:44
of of people still need help does that
00:00:46
suggest that you have a long way to go
00:00:48
with microcredit or how does that how
00:00:51
what does that say about the success of
00:00:53
the movement microcredit is the first
00:00:56
step you build up step by step many
00:00:59
other things like insurance program
00:01:01
Savings Program and many other programs
00:01:03
around it uh we have encouraged the CH
00:01:07
uh borrowers of gramine bank to send the
00:01:09
children to school because they
00:01:11
themselves are illiterate their their
00:01:14
husbands are illiterate their parents
00:01:15
are illiterate uh so we thought let's
00:01:18
break that Circle here send the children
00:01:21
to school so that your children will be
00:01:22
educated and they will be literate at
00:01:25
least and we succeeded in doing that
00:01:28
having all the children in school so so
00:01:30
that was a very happy kind of experience
00:01:32
for us that uh uh not only we giving
00:01:35
them loans to the borrowers but at the
00:01:37
same time we have helped them to uh send
00:01:40
their children to school uh and then we
00:01:42
saw lots of these children are doing
00:01:45
excellent results in the schools some of
00:01:47
them coming up at the top of the class
00:01:48
so we kind of got thrilled by the
00:01:51
performance of some of these kids coming
00:01:53
from totally literate totally poorest
00:01:55
family coming to the class with
00:01:57
everybody else now he or she is in the
00:02:00
top of the class so we thought this
00:02:02
should be celebrated so we started
00:02:03
introducing scholarships for all the top
00:02:06
performing students and gramine Bank
00:02:08
gives over 30,000 scholarships every
00:02:12
year now it's growing it's 40,000 and so
00:02:14
on every year because the number of
00:02:16
children are growing then we saw many of
00:02:19
these children are coming close to
00:02:20
higher
00:02:21
education and they have difficulty in
00:02:23
getting into higher education because
00:02:25
they don't have the money to pursue the
00:02:26
higher education but the quality wise
00:02:28
they're as good as anybody else so
00:02:30
immediately we introduced Education
00:02:31
Loans so that they don't have to worry
00:02:33
about money so the money is our problem
00:02:36
you concentrate in your education so we
00:02:38
started giving Education Loans and
00:02:39
helping them to higher education right
00:02:42
now there are more than 35,000 students
00:02:44
in under Education Loans going to
00:02:46
medical schools engineering schools
00:02:48
universities so almost in every single
00:02:51
um Public University and public medical
00:02:53
schools and uh engineering schools uh
00:02:56
there are gramine children uh who are
00:02:58
studying there so whole wave of new
00:03:01
children going into that so they when I
00:03:04
meet them they will always discuss an
00:03:07
issue which is worrying them about the
00:03:09
jobs uh after we finish our job can you
00:03:13
help us find
00:03:14
jobs and how am I going to find jobs for
00:03:16
them so I started thinking about it and
00:03:20
then uh giving them a new idea that uh
00:03:24
maybe they shouldn't be thinking about
00:03:26
jobs uh and we tell them look you are
00:03:28
children from G amilies you are ging
00:03:31
children your thinking should be
00:03:32
different than other children other
00:03:35
other people other children they worry
00:03:36
about jobs you shouldn't be worrying
00:03:38
about it you should be taking a pledge
00:03:41
and repeat this pledge every morning you
00:03:42
wake up and your pledge is I shall never
00:03:46
seek job from anybody I'll create jobs
00:03:50
this is my mission so you are not job
00:03:52
Seekers you are job givers so think in
00:03:56
that terms because your mother you are a
00:03:58
fortunate child your mother owns a bank
00:04:02
not many children have that fortune you
00:04:05
have that fortune so your mother's bank
00:04:08
has enormous amount of money so money is
00:04:10
not your problem your problem is what to
00:04:13
do with your money so think of what what
00:04:15
you can do as you go into education and
00:04:17
do that and then if you feel frustrated
00:04:20
you cannot come up with an idea think
00:04:23
about your mother what she
00:04:24
did she didn't wait for anybody she took
00:04:28
the money and went for
00:04:30
uh business herself she's an illiterate
00:04:32
woman and along the way she was
00:04:34
successful step by step she went on and
00:04:36
sent you to school now you are in a
00:04:39
higher education with her
00:04:41
bank and what good is your education if
00:04:44
you cannot do better than your mother if
00:04:46
she can do it you can do much better
00:04:48
that's that's the thing that you have to
00:04:50
prove to yourself that what you your
00:04:52
mother gave you a chance and you make
00:04:55
use of it and the use is that you create
00:04:57
a job for others so and start a small
00:05:01
and expand it as you grow and bring in
00:05:03
more people to help you to grow uh so
00:05:06
you don't have to wait to finish the
00:05:08
school and get a certificate in
00:05:10
education uh when you use it for getting
00:05:13
a job you need a
00:05:14
certificate you don't need a certificate
00:05:16
when you go into business yourself so
00:05:18
when you're in school you start the
00:05:19
business at the same time continue with
00:05:22
it so this is an idea that we and some
00:05:24
of them are taking this idea and started
00:05:27
borrowing from gamine bank and getting
00:05:29
into business themselves to to link what
00:05:31
you just said to uh what we were
00:05:33
discussing earlier about social business
00:05:35
what kind of social businesses could you
00:05:37
start around education and is gramine
00:05:40
involved in any any such
00:05:42
activities we along the health side what
00:05:45
we have done uh we are in the process of
00:05:47
finishing it this year we're starting a
00:05:49
nursing college as a social business
00:05:52
because uh nursing is a good profession
00:05:55
we'll be giving uh nursing degrees to
00:05:57
the young girls from gramine families
00:06:00
so they're coming from the poor families
00:06:02
going to nursing college and gramine
00:06:04
bank will give the Education Loans so
00:06:06
that they don't have to worry about
00:06:07
money where the money is coming from and
00:06:10
the college will cover its
00:06:12
cost and they will get the jobs and will
00:06:15
produce the nurses in a in a way that
00:06:17
they will be internationally acceptable
00:06:19
level of Education there are are big
00:06:21
shortage internationally about the
00:06:22
nurses there's a big shortage within the
00:06:25
country so each girl will have a choice
00:06:28
whether she will work in the country or
00:06:29
should go outside so this is a social
00:06:32
business and they said I don't have to
00:06:34
limit myself to one nursing college I
00:06:36
can have a series of nursing colleges
00:06:38
they're paying for
00:06:39
itself why can't you create as many as
00:06:42
you want because there are millions of
00:06:44
young girls waiting around sitting
00:06:46
around doing nothing because they have
00:06:47
no opportunities I can create some
00:06:49
opportunities for them they change their
00:06:51
life they change the society because now
00:06:54
they go out of the village and they go
00:06:55
out and work in the hospitals and so on
00:06:58
and go outside the country and learn
00:07:00
languages and so on so this is another
00:07:02
example of social business we want to do
00:07:04
a Medical College in the same principle
00:07:06
because Medical College also can cover
00:07:08
its own cost and produce doctors doctors
00:07:11
with this different kind of orientation
00:07:13
than the normally you have and then
00:07:14
normally a doctor a student doctor is
00:07:17
planning to when I finish
00:07:19
my education I'll start my career and
00:07:22
I'll make a lot of
00:07:24
money and that's Focus usually happens
00:07:27
so this orientation would be that when I
00:07:29
I come out I want to make sure I can
00:07:31
help the health situation in the country
00:07:34
and focusing on the poor families so how
00:07:36
do we do that kind of thing and having a
00:07:38
very high quality of education so that
00:07:40
you have international links you don't
00:07:42
feel that you're left out because you
00:07:44
concentrated on a certain kind of thing
00:07:46
and you get involved with research of
00:07:48
the uh health issues and so on that's
00:07:51
another social business could come out
00:07:53
so education even in education you can
00:07:55
use the idea of social business
00:07:58
