00:00:01
welcome to Opportunity Matters this is
00:00:04
Ken Shropshire it's a an exciting Series
00:00:07
where we've been looking at these ways
00:00:09
that we can bring about greater access
00:00:11
to those who don't traditionally have
00:00:13
access and I'm excited today in this
00:00:16
episode to talk about the area this near
00:00:19
and dear to me
00:00:20
Sports and I mean Sports is kind of this
00:00:23
this mystical space to think about this
00:00:25
whole topic because it is the Jackie
00:00:28
Robinson Trope that most people think
00:00:30
about is leading America into the state
00:00:32
that it's in that almost a decade before
00:00:36
schools were legally desegregated in the
00:00:39
United States baseball integrates so
00:00:43
people often think that Sports is the
00:00:44
space where this can happen most readily
00:00:48
and so we'll talk about that we'll talk
00:00:49
about the problems that still exist in
00:00:51
sport and some of the solutions that
00:00:53
some to of the uh representatives of two
00:00:56
of the great leagues in the United
00:00:57
States uh have have asserted so let me
00:01:01
introduce the guest formally as I've

the NFL being served as the senior vice
00:02:39
president of global diversity and
00:02:40
inclusion for 21st Century Fox Jonathan
00:02:44
thanks for joining in thank you Ken did
00:02:47
you ever work for any boring companies
00:02:49
that you know you no comment
00:02:54
okay well let let's get underway I mean
00:02:57
I said you know I want to kind of lay
00:02:59
the ground work of what's going on uh in
00:03:01
sports and kind of how we've gotten to
00:03:04
the place that that we're in um and and
00:03:08
Javier why don't we start with you and
00:03:10
and in your unique role as as the first
00:03:14
Latino in the space and also you didn't
00:03:16
mention in the intro
00:03:19
um is is he currently the the well
00:03:22
certainly one of the first Latino owner
00:03:24
in the National Hockey League uh is the
00:03:27
guy that bought the team that convinced
00:03:29
you to leave
00:03:30
a more traditional space to to come in
00:03:33
how's how's this journey been what kinds
00:03:35
of things uh in terms of equity and
00:03:39
opportunity did you want to accomplish
00:03:41
as you came in um and yeah just just
00:03:45
how's it been just just kind of kind of
00:03:46
lay lay the groundwork of this this
00:03:48
journey you've had for where are we now
00:03:50
year three and a half almost four season
00:03:53
four if you can believe it okay no okay
00:03:55
I appreciate this yeah no I appreciate
00:03:57
it and and um you you know I I I applaud
00:04:00
everything that you're doing to continue
00:04:02
to uh be a leader in talking about the
00:04:05
importance of opportunity and opening
00:04:07
doors um yeah you know you you you
00:04:10
mentioned Alex Morel the first Latino
00:04:12
owner in the history of the National
00:04:14
Hockey League and and one of the few
00:04:16
owner majority owners of any
00:04:18
professional sports team in in the
00:04:20
history of the professional the the
00:04:22
major professional teams in in America
00:04:25
um is a longtime friend uh business
00:04:27
partner we actually own the largest
00:04:30
Latino owned bank uh together in in
00:04:33
California um and and he approached me
00:04:35
uh shortly after buying the team and and
00:04:38
he said listen the reason why you should
00:04:41
do this you need to do this is because
00:04:43
of the incredible power of sports to
00:04:45
make a difference and and to make an
00:04:47
impact and what he said was I want us to
00:04:51
be a beloved Sports organization I want
00:04:53
to win but I want us to be beloved and
00:04:55
really the way you do that is by making
00:04:57
an impact and making a difference on the
00:04:59
ice in terms of rebuilding a franchise
00:05:02
from the ground up uh via the draft you
00:05:04
know we have a a historic number of
00:05:07
draft picks in the NHL uh on the
00:05:10
business side you know we've been at the
00:05:12
Forefront of putting our games over the
00:05:14
air for free we've been at the Forefront
00:05:17
of really bringing that bridge to growth
00:05:19
cohorts of young female diverse
00:05:22
techsavvy and Purpose Driven and using
00:05:24
content and actually fashion and
00:05:26
merchandise you know we have one of the
00:05:28
first fashion design
00:05:30
working with us that created a jersey
00:05:32
that their players actually wear during
00:05:33
games I I definitely want to come back
00:05:35
and and you you struck an issue that I
00:05:37
think is very important the power that
00:05:38
you have with the franchise to provide
00:05:42
opportunities in the community but I
00:05:44
want but I want to get get Jonathan in
00:05:46
for a moment be before we do that the
00:05:49
the NFL has has been uh Stellar in
00:05:53
addressing you know one of the issues
00:05:56
the way we used to think about diversity
00:05:58
in sports was I this idea of of playing
00:06:00
the game who's not playing
00:06:03
and the issue was the closer you were to
00:06:06
the ball the less likely you were to be
00:06:07
a person of color so there were no black
00:06:08
quarterbacks now that issue that issue
00:06:10
is is addressed what what are the big
00:06:13
issues with with with the National
00:06:15
Football League now and and and the big
00:06:17
successes too yeah Ken thanks for that
00:06:20
and and and also Javier congratulations
00:06:23
on on the success that you explained and
00:06:26
and we hope to see that in in all the
00:06:28
industry and and hopefully we will uh
00:06:31
sooner rather than later for us uh as it
00:06:34
pertains you know it always goes to the
00:06:36
top and we we certainly want to increase
00:06:39
our diverse
00:06:40
ownership uh in the organization right
00:06:43
now we really have one
00:06:46
primary uh owner who happens to be
00:06:48
diverse and that's shod KH um you know
00:06:52
we also um Kim Pula certainly uh is is a
00:06:56
critical piece as well but shodon is the
00:06:59
solo primary owner who happens to be
00:07:01
diverse and and he's been an owner for
00:07:04
quite a while um that has been something
00:07:06
that has been one of the biggest
00:07:08
priorities of the league obviously when
00:07:10
you look at at numbers and you look at
00:07:14
um how expensive it is to own a club uh
00:07:18
that certainly does uh uh lower the
00:07:22
numbers uh a little bit but I certainly
00:07:24
think that there's a lot of people like
00:07:26
Jose Feliciano who who I have met and
00:07:28
who think I think he's awesome uh that
00:07:31
there are people out there one thing
00:07:33
that we have done is we've been very
00:07:35
intentional on our efforts to really um
00:07:39
attract more diverse ownership and and I
00:07:42
think what's important is we want the
00:07:44
primary ownership but we also want those
00:07:46
limited partners as well and we've had
00:07:48
two clubs that have been for sale over
00:07:51
the last couple years uh the first one
00:07:54
being the Denver Broncos and the second
00:07:56
one being the most recent one is the
00:07:58
Washington commanders and in both cases
00:08:01
you see significant diverse ownership
00:08:04
with Melody Hobson condo rice and Sir
00:08:07
Lewis Hamilton uh with the Broncos and I
00:08:10
think the biggest diverse owner um with
00:08:13
Magic Johnson and others at the
00:08:15
Washington commanders and and before
00:08:18
that process even started for both of
00:08:20
those clubs we made a statement and and
00:08:23
um where we said as people are putting
00:08:27
together organizations are putting
00:08:29
together together their offers for a
00:08:30
club uh we will see it very favorably
00:08:34
for there to be diverse ownership as a
00:08:36
part of that overall package and
00:08:39
proposal um just making it very clear
00:08:41
that that is something that we are
00:08:43
looking for and hoping for uh going
00:08:45
forward and and we've been able to see
00:08:47
that I mean one thing too that is of
00:08:50
course important and I think can you
00:08:52
mention that is ownership of course at
00:08:54
the very top is is very critical but
00:08:57
also these other roles the head coach
00:08:59
role roles the G general manager roles
00:09:01
the president roles and we have seen
00:09:03
some good progress in some of those
00:09:06
areas in particular for with President
00:09:09
uh in August of 2020 Jason Wright was
00:09:12
the first uh African-American president
00:09:15
in the history of the National Football
00:09:17
League today we have five
00:09:19
African-American presidents uh at the
00:09:22
league and we feel very proud about that
00:09:24
um we also have uh one of them being uh
00:09:29
Sandra Douglas Morgan who uh who really
00:09:33
it's it's it's it's amazing as a black
00:09:35
woman the first person in that role too
00:09:38
um so we are seeing some nice
00:09:39
Improvement there we look at general
00:09:41
manager we have more diverse uh general
00:09:45
managers that we've had in the history
00:09:46
of the league with nine eight of which
00:09:49
who happen to be African-American and
00:09:52
that doesn't include the two Who
00:09:53
currently are interims right now and
00:09:56
Jojo and champ at the at the um
00:10:00
uh at the Las Vegas Raiders and and and
00:10:02
also the Los Angeles Chargers uh and and
00:10:05
I think you know obviously we're still
00:10:07
working on that head coach issue and
00:10:10
we're going to continue to do so but we
00:10:12
feel very confident that we'll see
00:10:14
change there let me ask and jav I do
00:10:16
want to come back to the the business
00:10:18
impact question in the community but but
00:10:20
but Jonathan reminds me of uh an
00:10:22
important issue that that that you you
00:10:24
two can discuss in a way that that kind
00:10:26
of none of the other areas have had uh
00:10:28
as much opportunity to do and that and
00:10:30
that is uh women's access in in
00:10:34
leadership uh in your respective leagues
00:10:37
where it there aren't women playing the
00:10:40
game in in your leagues and how that
00:10:44
balances with this this one always um
00:10:47
you know the puzzle when I talk about
00:10:49
this in class is we've got men who have
00:10:52
played the game that have difficulty
00:10:54
getting in some of these positions
00:10:56
sometimes how do we balance that against
00:10:58
the idea that that we need to have women
00:11:01
in these positions too and one person
00:11:05
that we were talking to uh in the
00:11:07
entertainment industry said you know my
00:11:10
focus is on on black people and getting
00:11:12
black black people in I guess part of
00:11:15
the the question is I throw all these
00:11:17
issues in at once you how do how do we
00:11:19
get the the Focus right this whole idea
00:11:23
of diversity is there a proper mix are
00:11:25
we sometime somehow negatively impacting
00:11:28
one group if we focus you know women's
00:11:31
month as AO or Latino history month or
00:11:34
Black History Month how do how do we do
00:11:36
the balance in this this this whole
00:11:38
space that is one thing that I have
00:11:40
realized especially in the role that
00:11:43
I've been in for almost three and a half
00:11:45
years now at the National Football
00:11:47
League is you cannot make the kind of
00:11:50
transformational change in a particular
00:11:53
area without also making the change in
00:11:58
another area which will support each
00:12:00
other and and I'll be direct about that
00:12:03
if we're talking about us doing a better
00:12:05
job of having more diversity in
00:12:09
particular with uh African-Americans and
00:12:11
Latinos and and Asians and in areas of
00:12:16
leadership um you're not going to get
00:12:19
that leadership without also driving
00:12:22
more inclusivity and diversity and
00:12:25
diverse representation with women and
00:12:27
it's interesting because there is um
00:12:32
there there are there is someone who I
00:12:36
do a lot of work with and is um and and
00:12:41
is a player and it was interesting there
00:12:43
was a comment that was said to
00:12:45
me that was there was a clear
00:12:50
change in the culture and the
00:12:53
environment of the clubs that he worked
00:12:56
with when women were on
00:13:01
staff and that was with so with other
00:13:06
aspects of diversity like people of
00:13:09
color that got better and more inclusive
00:13:12
with women on
00:13:14
staff and vice
00:13:16
versa so one thing drives the other
00:13:19
interesting um there is no need to say
00:13:23
I'm going to lock in on one thing and
00:13:27
then leave the others behind it is the
00:13:31
commitment to all of it holistically
00:13:34
which drives the Improvement in those
00:13:37
areas um so I so just to be direct I
00:13:41
don't think that we are going to get the
00:13:44
progress that we need in particular with
00:13:47
particular groups whether they be black
00:13:50
groups Latino groups and others without
00:13:53
also having that progress and in
00:13:55
particular with women women will drive
00:13:58
that increased Pro progress for us
00:14:02
Javier I think that's a really good
00:14:04
point Jonathan that one thing will
00:14:06
actually exponentially impact something
00:14:08
else I I'll I'll add a kind of a
00:14:11
slightly uh different point to this
00:14:13
which is we ask ourselves constantly
00:14:15
what what's what is the goal right what
00:14:18
is the end goal so number one one of the
00:14:21
goals is we want to be a best-in-class
00:14:23
business operation and business
00:14:26
organization and if you don't have have
00:14:29
diverse voices especially if you don't
00:14:32
have female voices you're not going to
00:14:35
make the best decisions they're just
00:14:36
they're they're going to be impacted
00:14:39
you're going to not have the full
00:14:41
perspective the full Viewpoint um you
00:14:44
know full insight as an organization so
00:14:47
so it starts with if we want to be the
00:14:50
best business let's bring the best
00:14:52
people and that includes bringing the
00:14:54
best amount of and the highest amount of
00:14:58
perspective to make the best decisions
00:15:00
number two as an organization and as a
00:15:03
business what do we want to do we we are
00:15:06
consumer business very high-profile
00:15:08
consumer business so what do those
00:15:10
consumers look like in in particular
00:15:13
what is the growth a look like in the
00:15:16
consumer Market in America it's young
00:15:20
female diverse techsavvy and purpos
00:15:24
griven I constantly talk about those
00:15:27
growth cohort so we want to a bridge to
00:15:30
those growth cohorts which by the way is
00:15:31
one of the key value propositions that
00:15:33
we offer to our partners right our Media
00:15:36
Partners our business partners uh from a
00:15:39
business perspective if we want to be a
00:15:41
bridge to those growth cohorts you
00:15:43
really need those folks in the seat
00:15:45
giving you that type of perspective of
00:15:47
attracting that because a monolithic
00:15:50
Viewpoint will not get you the
00:15:54
understanding or at least the openness
00:15:56
of understanding how to capture those
00:15:59
growth cohorts and I don't ascribe to
00:16:01
this theory that you know only an
00:16:03
African-American can sit in that seat in
00:16:05
order you help you attract other
00:16:07
African-Americans or the
00:16:08
African-American Market that's not what
00:16:09
I'm saying what I'm saying is having
00:16:11
them in the seat as Jonathan alluded to
00:16:14
creates a culture in an environment in
00:16:16
which you're asking and you're open to
00:16:19
saying are we capturing all the distinct
00:16:22
perspectives that we need as an
00:16:23
organization and are we capturing the
00:16:25
distinct and unique approaches in order
00:16:28
to capture those growth cohorts so so I
00:16:31
want to say you you guys have have been
00:16:33
the ideal as I as I've been thinking
00:16:35
about the series
00:16:37
that in terms of this broad issue that's
00:16:41
that's been on my mind uh and it's been
00:16:43
on my mind a lot because of the issues
00:16:45
that have been raised recently with
00:16:48
anti-Semitism and
00:16:50
islamophobia my response to a lot of
00:16:52
people has been the best Professionals
00:16:54
in this space are always trying to think
00:16:57
about everybody and always are trying to
00:16:59
figure out how do you include everyone
00:17:02
and how do you make sure there's not
00:17:03
bias going against anyone and the best
00:17:06
professionals are always saying too
00:17:08
there's not a universal approach for
00:17:10
each group I I need to do whatever it is
00:17:14
I need to do to address these issues and
00:17:16
I need to constantly stay stay on top of
00:17:18
these issues so I'm I'm not I'm not
00:17:20
dragging you guys in with my my view
00:17:21
viewpoint but I it it's it's one that
00:17:23
that uh I I think people that are being
00:17:27
critical of the work in the space need
00:17:29
to have a better understanding of what
00:17:31
what the true professionals do so the
00:17:34
the one the one last area I want to
00:17:35
cover we've got uh about uh three
00:17:38
minutes left is this area of of business
00:17:41
opportunities that that a league that
00:17:44
that a franchise can provide to people
00:17:46
that don't normally have access to do
00:17:49
business wi with with a league or or
00:17:51
team uh Jonathan why you why don't you
00:17:53
take a a minute and then Javier I'll ask
00:17:55
you to kind of close out with with a a
00:17:57
last minute on on the kinds of things
00:17:59
that are available the kinds of things a
00:18:01
can you are doing and El can
00:18:03
do yeah Ken absolutely this piece is
00:18:07
really critical um you look at the NHL
00:18:09
you look at the NFL huge organizations
00:18:12
multi-billion dollar organizations um
00:18:15
very profitable organizations very
00:18:18
connected to the fan base organizations
00:18:20
and more and more becoming Global uh
00:18:23
with that said uh we need to just as we
00:18:28
need to have diversity and
00:18:30
representation um uh in terms of our
00:18:34
employees we need to have diversity in
00:18:36
terms of the organizations and
00:18:38
businesses that we're working with and
00:18:40
share the pie um we wouldn't be who we
00:18:43
are today without all of these
00:18:45
communities that we're talking about and
00:18:47
so for us we're really really focused
00:18:50
and and made it a huge priority around
00:18:53
increasing the number of diverse vendors
00:18:55
that we work with and when we say that
00:18:57
it's not just just in one particular
00:18:59
space uh events is critical marketing's
00:19:02
critical um B uh banking's critical
00:19:06
Finance um we've actually had a lot of
00:19:08
success in that area uh n working with
00:19:11
the national black Bank Foundation uh
00:19:13
with a Ashley uh and and Ashley Bell and
00:19:17
others um but we believe that and and
00:19:20
this is not only at the league office
00:19:22
but also at the clubs is you have to in
00:19:25
order for us to get better have better
00:19:27
Solutions uh have the best Partners
00:19:29
working with us we have to have a
00:19:31
diverse lens and be very focused on
00:19:34
bringing in a variety of different
00:19:37
people from different backgrounds and
00:19:38
organizations that can service in a
00:19:40
variety of different ways so that's
00:19:42
critical for us we've been working on
00:19:43
that uh very hard for two plus years uh
00:19:48
specifically and and there's still a lot
00:19:50
more work to to get done but we're doing
00:19:53
some good work there Javier in in the
00:19:55
last minute what's what's the what kinds
00:19:58
of things have you guys been doing yeah
00:20:01
no I'll Echo everything that Jonathan
00:20:03
said I don't want to repeat it because
00:20:04
it's it's absolutely true right like
00:20:06
these are drivers of economic activity
00:20:09
especially in local communities and it
00:20:11
it goes beyond just game day it's you
00:20:14
know content and and Merchandising and
00:20:17
and our licensing and so it's it goes
00:20:19
beyond that equality health is a local
00:20:21
Health Organization here that really
00:20:23
targets the lower income primarily
00:20:26
Latino African-American community uh in
00:20:28
in greater Phoenix area they came to us
00:20:31
to actually sign up and sponsor the
00:20:33
largest street hockey program in the NHL
00:20:37
in Arizona by the way and why because
00:20:39
they knew that that was their Target and
00:20:42
they were trying to make Health Care
00:20:45
accessible and and really break down
00:20:48
walls and barriers around the issues of
00:20:50
Health Care why not do it with an
00:20:53
organization that can help them do that
00:20:55
in a very unique way because that
00:20:56
organization is focused on that just
00:20:58
like we're trying to make hockey
00:21:00
accessible through street hockey how
00:21:02
that's how we're trying to Target these
00:21:04
growth in diverse uh segments they
00:21:06
wanted to align with that so it's it's
00:21:08
not just seeing it as bringing them into
00:21:11
the supply chain and procurement it's
00:21:13
also being that resource for those
00:21:16
Enterprises to then also make that
00:21:18
difference in the community and so for
00:21:20
me that's that's the power that we have
00:21:24
to combine our platforms our voices our
00:21:27
impact
00:21:28
with the business opportunities that
00:21:31
make sense for the league for the team
00:21:33
for our partners for the community um as
00:21:36
much as these are the right things that
00:21:38
we are doing Ken they're the right
00:21:41
business decisions and that's what
00:21:43
bothers me whenever there's critique I
00:21:45
go great give me a critique as to why
00:21:48
this is not a good business decision as
00:21:51
as a as a business guy as a private
00:21:53
Equity guy tell me why this is not a
00:21:55
good business decision because I can
00:21:57
tell you why it is Javier that that
00:22:00
that's a great uh point to to end on the
00:22:03
idea of this whole Space the idea of
00:22:07
looking for opportunities and the idea
00:22:09
that it can be positively business
00:22:11
impactful if you do it the right way so
00:22:13
