The Small Steps That Have a Big Impact on Achieving Goals

January 12, 2015 / 09:36

This episode covers strategies for overcoming temptation and achieving health goals, featuring research on planning prompts, fresh starts, and temptation bundling.

The guest discusses how planning prompts can significantly increase follow-through on health-related behaviors, such as getting flu shots or colonoscopies, by encouraging individuals to specify when and where they will engage in these activities.

Fresh starts are highlighted as key motivators, with evidence showing that people are more likely to pursue health goals after significant life events, such as birthdays or the start of a new year.

Temptation bundling is introduced as a method to combine enjoyable activities, like watching a favorite TV show, with necessary tasks, such as exercising, to enhance motivation.

The guest shares surprising findings from studies, including the high demand for temptation bundling and the unique patterns of gym attendance related to birthdays, emphasizing the practicality of these strategies for individuals and organizations.

TL;DR

Researcher discusses strategies to overcome temptation and achieve health goals through planning prompts, fresh starts, and temptation bundling.

00:00:05
my research looks at how people can
00:00:07
overcome Temptation and how they can
00:00:09
achieve their goals particularly in the
00:00:11
domain of health so how can people do
00:00:13
things like exercise more eat healthier
00:00:16
food and make and keep the medical
00:00:18
appointments that they know are in their
00:00:20
long-term best interest so let me give
00:00:22
you a little bit um more specific
00:00:24
information about what I study uh first
00:00:26
study I wanted to mention to you is a
00:00:28
study I did to look at um the power of
00:00:30
planning prompts or prompting people to
00:00:32
form a plan about exactly when they'll
00:00:34
follow through on and engage in a good
00:00:36
behavior like getting a flu shot or a
00:00:38
colonoscopy and we found that when
00:00:40
people are prompted to just write down
00:00:43
the date and time when they'll get a flu
00:00:44
shot we see dramatically higher rates of
00:00:47
follow-through this also works with
00:00:49
colonoscopies so one of my studies shows
00:00:51
the power of planning prompts I have
00:00:53
another study that I really like that
00:00:55
looks at the power of Fresh Starts what
00:00:57
do I mean by a fresh start well there
00:00:58
are moments in our lives that feel like
00:01:00
the start of a new era the start of a
00:01:01
new cycle like the beginning of a new
00:01:03
week the beginning of a new month the
00:01:05
beginning of a new year following a
00:01:07
holiday or following a birthday and
00:01:09
following those kinds of Fresh Start
00:01:10
moments people actually are more
00:01:12
motivated to follow through on their
00:01:13
goals so we see that people search more
00:01:15
for the term diet on Google we see that
00:01:18
people go to the gym more frequently
00:01:19
following those Fresh Start moments and
00:01:21
we also see that they create more goals
00:01:23
both health and health irrelevant goals
00:01:25
on a goal setting website and then a
00:01:27
third study that I think is sort of
00:01:29
Representative of of this line of work
00:01:31
looks at an idea I call Temptation
00:01:33
bundling the idea is simple um imagine
00:01:36
that you really struggle to go to the
00:01:37
gym you don't have the willpower at the
00:01:39
end of a long day and imagine you also
00:01:42
have a thing for a trashy TV show let's
00:01:44
say Breaking Bad um well you feel a
00:01:47
little guilty watching Breaking Bad when
00:01:48
you should be doing other things so how
00:01:50
do you solve these two problems well
00:01:52
what if you only let yourself watch
00:01:53
Breaking Bad while you were exercising
00:01:55
at the gym you'd stop wasting time at
00:01:57
home watching this TV show that you feel
00:01:59
guilty about and you'd start craving
00:02:01
trips to the gym at the end of a long
00:02:02
day to see what happens in the next
00:02:04
episode not only that you'll enjoy your
00:02:06
workout and You're Breaking Bad episode
00:02:08
more combined because you won't feel
00:02:10
guilty watching that episode and time
00:02:12
will fly while you're exercising at the
00:02:13
gym so those are three representative
00:02:15
examples of my work on how we can get
00:02:17
people to achieve their goals and
00:02:19
overcome
00:02:24
Temptations the key takeaways are sort
00:02:26
of a number of tools that you can use to
00:02:28
try to help yourself or help others
00:02:30
follow through on their goals so one key
00:02:32
takeaway is that whenever you want to
00:02:34
help somebody follow through on a goal
00:02:36
um one thing you should do is actually
00:02:38
prompt them to think about exactly when
00:02:40
and where and how they'll accomplish
00:02:41
that goal by prompting them to think
00:02:43
through those things even if they do it
00:02:44
privately and don't ever tell you their
00:02:46
plans you can help them reduce the
00:02:48
likelihood they'll actually forget to
00:02:49
follow through because now there's this
00:02:50
cue embedded in their memory that's
00:02:53
going to trigger the recollection oh
00:02:55
this is when I'm supposed to this is the
00:02:57
moment I said I do it this is when I'm
00:02:58
supposed to go to the gym and also makes
00:03:00
it harder for them to procrastinate
00:03:02
because now they're putting off
00:03:03
something they explicitly said they do
00:03:05
rather than kind of a vague intention so
00:03:07
planning prompts are one way um people
00:03:09
can really help one another uh increase
00:03:12
goal follow through another practical
00:03:14
implication of my work is it suggests
00:03:17
that you may want to encourage people to
00:03:19
follow through on their goals at Fresh
00:03:20
startart moments if you're thinking
00:03:21
about when should I remind my employe
00:03:24
about this objective that she wanted to
00:03:26
meet for instance or he wanted to meet
00:03:28
um the best time may be after after a
00:03:30
fresh start so at the beginning of a new
00:03:31
week month year following a birthday a
00:03:33
work anniversary or even at a moment you
00:03:35
could frame to them as a fresh start for
00:03:37
some reason it's the start of a new
00:03:39
project for your team for instance so
00:03:41
those are a couple practical
00:03:42
implications and then Temptation
00:03:43
bundling of course suggests that you can
00:03:44
just encourage people to bundle their
00:03:46
Temptations with things that they know
00:03:48
they should do so for instance as we
00:03:49
talked about earlier um you know
00:03:51
bundling and engaging audio novel say or
00:03:54
TV show with exercise or you could only
00:03:56
allow yourself to say get a pedicure
00:03:58
when catching up on over do work or to
00:04:01
uh watch your favorite TV show at home
00:04:03
when catching up on some household
00:04:04
chores or listening to your favorite
00:04:06
music while catching up on chores so
00:04:07
those are a bunch of different practical
00:04:09
implications of my
00:04:14
work one thing I found really surprising
00:04:16
was how huge the demand was in a study I
00:04:18
ran for Temptation bundling so in this
00:04:21
study we asked participants in our study
00:04:23
if they' be willing to pay us um to take
00:04:26
away a possession they could otherwise
00:04:27
use freely an iPod we'd given them as
00:04:29
gift that was pre-loaded with ATT
00:04:32
tempting audio novel of their choice and
00:04:34
lock this possession they could
00:04:35
otherwise use freely at the gym so they
00:04:37
could only access it when working out so
00:04:40
we thought you know not that many people
00:04:41
will find it attractive to pay us to
00:04:43
take away something they could otherwise
00:04:44
use whenever they want and in fact more
00:04:46
than 60% of our participants said oo
00:04:49
sign me up that sounds great and they
00:04:51
wanted to give us money in order to take
00:04:52
away this tempting possession so it
00:04:54
could help them exercise more so that
00:04:56
was one really interesting I thought and
00:04:58
surprising and exciting finding I have
00:05:01
another one that's kind of funny my
00:05:03
other surprising finding is actually in
00:05:05
the research I did on Fresh Starts also
00:05:07
in a study looking at gym attendance and
00:05:10
what we found in that study one of many
00:05:11
things we found in that study is that
00:05:13
people are more likely to go to the gym
00:05:14
in the months following a birthday than
00:05:16
in the months preceding it so following
00:05:17
this fresh jart event now interestingly
00:05:20
that's true for every birthday that was
00:05:22
in our data set except one notable
00:05:24
birthday and that's the 21st birthday uh
00:05:27
you know when we first found this we
00:05:29
were a little surprised and then pretty
00:05:30
quickly we realized maybe there's a
00:05:32
reason for that maybe that's not so
00:05:33
bizarre after all but that was that was
00:05:35
something that stuck out at us as
00:05:36
interesting in our
00:05:41
findings well one thing that
00:05:43
organizations could do is simply use
00:05:46
planning prompts whenever they want to
00:05:47
encourage follow through and a good
00:05:48
behavior so they could prompt people to
00:05:50
Think Through the where when and how of
00:05:53
engaging that behavior and that's likely
00:05:54
to increase takeup another thing they
00:05:56
could do is try to provide tools to
00:05:58
facilitate temptation bundling so for
00:06:00
instance at their gyms they could offer
00:06:02
to um have a subscription available to
00:06:05
Netflix that you could log into and
00:06:07
watch your favorite show pick up where
00:06:08
you left off they could hold your iPod
00:06:10
and a locker for you so that you could
00:06:13
pick up listening to your favorite audio
00:06:14
novel where you left off on your
00:06:15
previous visit those would be a couple
00:06:17
of examples of things organizations
00:06:19
could
00:06:23
do well one story that's been in the
00:06:25
news quite frequently is America's
00:06:27
obesity epidemic and a lot of my res
00:06:29
Arch provides tools that people can use
00:06:32
to try to overcome The Temptations that
00:06:34
often lead us to gain weight like
00:06:36
failing to exercise frequently enough or
00:06:38
eating healthy
00:06:42
foods I think one of the main
00:06:44
misperceptions these studies topel is
00:06:46
that there's not a lot you can do if
00:06:48
you're say overweight or in debt or
00:06:50
haven't achieved the educational goals
00:06:52
that you hope to achieve what these
00:06:54
studies say is that there are indeed
00:06:55
tools you can use and strategies you can
00:06:57
employ and that your friends can
00:06:59
actually help you as well and your uh
00:07:01
your colleagues as well as your family
00:07:04
by uh using those tools providing those
00:07:05
tools to help motivate you to achieve
00:07:07
your
00:07:11
goals a lot of This research that I've
00:07:13
done and that I've described to you
00:07:14
today is actually really new so no one
00:07:16
had ever looked at Fresh Starts before
00:07:18
so that's sort of wildly new no one had
00:07:19
ever looked at this idea of Temptation
00:07:20
bundling um the one set of studies that
00:07:24
uh that overlap a little bit more with
00:07:26
past work are the studies on planning
00:07:27
prompts so people had looked at the
00:07:29
power of planning prompts in the F in
00:07:31
the past and what sets our work apart um
00:07:33
is sort of two things one a lot of past
00:07:36
studies involving planning prompts
00:07:38
actually involved um face-to-face
00:07:40
contact or contact over the phone with
00:07:41
someone who asked you to walk through a
00:07:43
plan and what we actually did is sent a
00:07:45
simple mailing you never interact with
00:07:47
another person you're simply prompted to
00:07:49
write down the date and time when you
00:07:50
plan to engage in a given behavior and
00:07:52
so there's no social pressure that might
00:07:54
be increasing the power of the planning
00:07:56
prompt and we still see huge benefits so
00:07:58
one of the things that we do is sort of
00:07:59
isolate the fact that it's not something
00:08:01
about social pressure it's just the act
00:08:03
of forming a plan privately that can
00:08:05
really increase and follow through we
00:08:07
also do that study with a very large
00:08:10
real population thousands of people
00:08:11
looking at real flu shots whereas a lot
00:08:13
of past Studies have looked at
00:08:14
hypotheticals or
00:08:19
self-reports I'm doing a lot of research
00:08:22
right now looking at other ways we can
00:08:24
encourage people to follow through on
00:08:25
their goals and overcome Temptation one
00:08:28
study that I'm particular excited about
00:08:30
is a large field experiment looking at
00:08:33
encouraging people to save more for
00:08:34
retirement so we have about 30,000
00:08:36
people and in our experiment we're
00:08:39
encouraging them all to sign up to take
00:08:40
money out of their paycheck and send it
00:08:43
to their 401K now some people are
00:08:45
offered the opportunity to do that to
00:08:47
start having the money move in the
00:08:49
future at a fresh start moment so say
00:08:51
following a birthday or following New
00:08:53
Year's whereas other people are also
00:08:55
offered the opportunity to do it in in
00:08:56
the future but at a fairly arbitrary
00:08:58
date and what we're hoping oping is that
00:09:00
um our hypothesis will be confirmed
00:09:02
which is that people will be more
00:09:04
motivated to save and enroll in these
00:09:06
retirement savings programs following
00:09:08
fresh start dates and that that will be
00:09:09
a strategy that can then be employed
00:09:11
more
00:09:15
