Forensic Files | With Every Breath | FULL EPISODE | HD | True Crime Procedure Investigation Drama

October 16, 2025 / 21:46

This episode covers the mysterious disease outbreak in 1993 affecting young Navajo Indians, the deaths of Merrill Bahi and Florina Woody, and the investigation into the cause.

The episode begins with the alarming deaths of young Navajo individuals on a reservation in the Four Corners region, which includes parts of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Merrill Bahi, a talented runner, and his partner Florina Woody both succumb to a sudden illness, leading to widespread panic.

Florina's death on Mother's Day at the age of 21 and Merrill's death shortly after during her funeral raise concerns about a potential epidemic. Despite traditional beliefs against autopsies, Florina's mother permits them to seek answers.

The investigation reveals that the illness is not limited to the Navajo community, as cases appear in tourists. The CDC is called in, and traditional Navajo medicine men provide critical insights linking the outbreak to environmental factors.

Ultimately, the disease is identified as a new hantavirus, linked to a surge in the deer mouse population due to environmental conditions. The episode highlights the collaboration between traditional knowledge and scientific investigation.

TL;DR

The episode details a 1993 hantavirus outbreak among Navajo Indians, leading to tragic deaths and a scientific investigation uncovering its cause.

00:00:06
In 1993,
00:00:08
on an Indian reservation in the
00:00:10
southwestern United States, young Navajo
00:00:14
Indians were dying at an alarming rate.
00:00:18
More than 20 people would die from the
00:00:20
mysterious disease, one that health
00:00:23
officials had never seen before.
00:00:27
But the Navajo Medicine men provided a
00:00:29
critical piece of information which led
00:00:32
investigators around the world to a most
00:00:36
unlikely killer.

00:01:05
Covering 25,000 square miles of high
00:01:08
desert in four states, Utah, Colorado,
00:01:12
New Mexico, and Arizona, is a Navajo
00:01:15
Indian reservation in an area known as
00:01:18
the Four Corners.
00:01:21
It's the largest Navajo community in
00:01:24
America with some 1,200 members of the
00:01:28
tribe living throughout the desert
00:01:30
hills.
00:01:33
The scenery brings thousands of tourists
00:01:36
each year, a vital source of revenue for
00:01:38
the Navajo who have inhabited the area
00:01:41
for centuries. But poverty is endemic
00:01:45
and was a fact of life for people like
00:01:47
19-year-old Merrill Bahi. But Mel Bahi
00:01:51
had something that set him apart. Merl
00:01:55
was a very phenomenal person. But where
00:01:58
he stood out was his running ability.
00:02:01
And uh I think if you talk to anybody
00:02:04
that saw him run, you know, they would
00:02:08
tell you that it was a gift that he had
00:02:10
uh in running. and he loved to run.
00:02:13
>> Merryill Bahi was so fast he won a full
00:02:16
scholarship to the Santa Fe Indian
00:02:18
School, a boarding school that was miles
00:02:21
away from his home both physically and
00:02:24
culturally.
00:02:26
>> He didn't really know how
00:02:29
to put a sheet on a bl,
00:02:33
you know, it was like he threw the
00:02:35
blanket on and that was it. Said, "No,
00:02:36
Mo, you um you put this down first." So
00:02:39
I I had to show him how to
00:02:43
to make up a bed.
00:02:45
>> Bahi slowly adjusted to his new life. He
00:02:48
did well in school, but the transition
00:02:50
to life in the city was difficult until
00:02:54
he met Florina Woody.
00:02:56
>> Something magical happened. He met
00:02:58
another Navajo girl at a PBLO school and
00:03:00
they fell in love so intensely that um
00:03:03
the track coach decided to make Florina
00:03:06
the manager of the track team to hand
00:03:08
out the towels so that uh Merryill would
00:03:11
keep his mind on his running.
00:03:13
>> Not long afterwards, they had a son
00:03:15
Maurice and planned to get married. But
00:03:18
shortly after the baby was born, Florina
00:03:21
woke up one morning with what she
00:03:23
thought was the flu.
00:03:25
>> She was all cold. She kept, you know,
00:03:28
having these chills
00:03:31
and it was it was something like you're
00:03:34
getting a cold or getting sick from a a
00:03:37
common cold.
00:03:38
>> Her lungs were a white out, meaning they
00:03:40
were just solid. They should usually be
00:03:43
dark from from the air, and they
00:03:45
obviously had something in there, fluid
00:03:46
in there.
00:03:48
>> Doctors raced to find out what was
00:03:50
wrong. They administered oxygen to help
00:03:53
Fina breathe, but she went into shock. I
00:03:56
saw um one of the nurses coming out of
00:03:59
her room all disturbed and she was
00:04:01
crying and and I knew there that
00:04:05
something was happening.
00:04:07
>> None of the standard procedures worked
00:04:09
and Florina's heart stopped beating. The
00:04:13
pressure on her lungs was simply too
00:04:15
much for her body to bear. The cause of
00:04:18
death, acute respiratory failure.
00:04:22
Florina Woody died on Mother's Day. She
00:04:25
was just 21 years old.
00:04:28
>> When they told us that she was gone,
00:04:31
then they allowed us to go into her
00:04:34
room. I just couldn't believe that my my
00:04:36
baby is gone.
00:04:39
I didn't want to leave her. I just want
00:04:41
to hang out there right there.
00:04:44
Doctors had no idea what had caused
00:04:47
Florina's sudden death, and they feared
00:04:50
that whatever killed Florina Woody might
00:04:53
be contagious.
00:04:58
Florina's death was a particularly cruel
00:05:00
blow to Meil Bahi. The mother of his
00:05:04
infant son was dead. As Bahi prepared
00:05:08
Flerina's funeral, he too started to
00:05:11
develop similar symptoms.
00:05:13
Merryill Bahi was beside himself. He
00:05:16
wasn't feeling well,
00:05:19
but
00:05:20
it didn't occur to him that uh that it
00:05:25
could possibly be the same thing that
00:05:26
affected Florina.
00:05:27
>> Merryill's physical condition quickly
00:05:30
deteriorated, and he was rushed to the
00:05:32
Crown Point Hospital, the same hospital
00:05:34
that treated Florina.
00:05:36
After an initial consultation, Merrill
00:05:39
did not want to be treated where Florina
00:05:41
died. So his family drove him to the
00:05:44
Indian Medical Center in Gallup, an hour
00:05:46
away. Shortly before arrival, Merrill
00:05:50
lost consciousness.
00:05:55
As doctors rushed him into the emergency
00:05:58
room, he died. The cause of death, acute
00:06:02
respiratory failure.
00:06:05
Merryill Bahi was only 19 years old.
00:06:08
Ironically, Merryill died during
00:06:11
Florina's funeral service, which was
00:06:13
taking place directly across the street
00:06:15
from the hospital. The funeral was going
00:06:18
on and there we had a meeting with our
00:06:21
medical investigator and Merryill's
00:06:24
family were coming in for Flo's funeral
00:06:28
and they were told there and everything
00:06:31
just started happening here and there
00:06:33
and and that's when I went to shock.
00:06:37
Health authorities had no explanation
00:06:39
for what killed the young couple. The
00:06:41
only way they could determine the cause
00:06:44
was to perform a complete autopsy. But
00:06:47
autopsies are not permitted in the
00:06:49
Navajo community.
00:06:51
>> It's forbidden in among traditional
00:06:55
Napos to have autopsies done and the
00:06:57
Navajo tribal government can forbid that
00:07:01
if they want to. And I don't think the
00:07:03
government people really understood that
00:07:05
that we have that sovereign power to do
00:07:07
that even if it's a medical emergency.
00:07:09
But with her daughter and future
00:07:11
son-in-law dead, Beta Beay wanted
00:07:14
answers. She took the unusual step of
00:07:18
defying tradition and the tribal elders
00:07:21
by giving doctors permission to perform
00:07:24
the autopsies.
00:07:26
The autopsy findings took on a new
00:07:28
importance when Merrill and Florina's
00:07:31
infant child, Maurice, also fell ill.
00:07:36
He was rushed to the hospital and
00:07:37
quarantined.
00:07:39
>> What is it? Where did it come from or
00:07:42
what is it? Is it going to is it going
00:07:45
to be here or how? You know, I asked I
00:07:48
had that I had those questions and I
00:07:51
wanted to find out.
00:07:54
As authorities awaited the autopsy
00:07:56
results, the disease continued its
00:07:59
deadly rampage.
00:08:02
Within a week of Florina and Merrill's
00:08:04
deaths, the number of dead had risen to
00:08:06
six, and each day more people were being
00:08:10
hospitalized with symptoms.
00:08:13
New Mexico officials feared they had an
00:08:16
epidemic on their hands and panic
00:08:19
gripped the region. We were getting
00:08:21
calls from concerned citizens and
00:08:23
concerned physicians and concerned
00:08:25
school administrators and concerned
00:08:27
everybody. Uh and that always will
00:08:30
happen when something as dramatic as
00:08:32
this and as frightening as this is
00:08:34
occurring and when you do really don't
00:08:35
have any good answers.
00:08:38
>> The autopsies on Meil Bahi and Florina
00:08:41
Woody answered few questions. The
00:08:44
mystery illness could not be identified
00:08:48
and until it was more people were
00:08:52
destined to die.
00:08:57
>> Doctors in the Four Corners area are on
00:08:59
alert to a deadly respiratory illness.
00:09:02
>> May 1993,
00:09:04
Navajo radio stations in the Four
00:09:06
Corners Indian Reservation broadcast an
00:09:09
alert. Young Navajo were dying at an
00:09:13
alarming rate and new cases were being
00:09:15
reported every day. So little was known
00:09:19
that health officials were not able to
00:09:21
tell listeners what precautions to take
00:09:24
against the disease.
00:09:26
>> It was frightening for people who came
00:09:28
down with a fever and cough and headache
00:09:31
at the time. As a physician, we're
00:09:33
sending people home who we had to accept
00:09:37
the possibility that they could drop
00:09:40
dead within hours of leaving the
00:09:42
hospital.
00:09:43
>> The outbreak was now national news. And
00:09:47
since it appeared that only Navajo were
00:09:49
affected, it was dubbed the Navajo flu.
00:09:53
>> There was pandemonium.
00:09:55
It's impossible to keep a string of
00:09:57
deaths like this a secret for very long.
00:09:59
One possibility was bubanic plague. The
00:10:03
dreaded black death that killed millions
00:10:05
during the Middle Ages and still strikes
00:10:08
more than a thousand people worldwide
00:10:10
every year. Plague symptoms,
00:10:14
particularly the high fever, muscle
00:10:16
pain, and fluid buildup bore
00:10:19
similarities to the four corners
00:10:21
disease. bubanic plague still crops up
00:10:25
in New Mexico from time to time and so
00:10:27
the state is very well equipped to do
00:10:29
that test and um much to the to the uh
00:10:37
chagrin of the investigators um the test
00:10:39
was negative. It it was shagrin because
00:10:43
they still didn't know what had killed
00:10:44
this young couple. Another possibility
00:10:47
was pneumonic plague, a highly
00:10:50
contagious disease. It attacks the lungs
00:10:53
and kills quickly, which is what
00:10:56
happened to the four corners victims.
00:10:58
Since it could be treated with large
00:11:01
doses of antibiotics, doctors actually
00:11:04
hoped that this was what they'd find.
00:11:07
But the autopsies turned up something
00:11:10
different. The capillaries of the
00:11:12
victims had collapsed, leaving the lungs
00:11:14
wet like large sponges. This was not
00:11:18
consistent with pneumonic plague and it
00:11:22
did not resemble anything medical
00:11:24
investigators had ever seen before
00:11:27
>> and it was very puzzling and it was it
00:11:30
was frustrating because you felt like
00:11:31
how come we're not smart enough to
00:11:33
figure this out? You know, this
00:11:35
shouldn't be that hard. So, I haven't
00:11:38
had I haven't had that many cases at one
00:11:40
time that I didn't understand.
00:11:42
>> Local health officials called in the
00:11:44
Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta,
00:11:46
Georgia. The CDC special pathogens team
00:11:50
was sent in to look for possible causes.
00:11:54
And they started their investigation in
00:11:56
the trailer that Mel Bahi and Florina
00:11:59
Woody once called home.
00:12:02
>> We had no idea what this was. We didn't
00:12:03
know whether it was contagious. We
00:12:05
didn't know whether working with the
00:12:06
tissues was going to be dangerous. We
00:12:08
didn't know whether you could get this
00:12:10
uh in the laboratory or from somebody
00:12:12
outside in the field.
00:12:14
>> The outbreak was considered a biosafety
00:12:17
level four hazard, the most lethal
00:12:20
designation.
00:12:23
Dressed in specially designed suits to
00:12:25
keep them free from any contagion, CDC
00:12:28
specialists searched the trailer and the
00:12:31
surrounding area. They wore something
00:12:34
like that. You know the astronauts that
00:12:36
they're they're sending off to outer
00:12:39
space. You know how they dress? They
00:12:41
were dressed like that when they came to
00:12:43
our place. And that was even scarier.
00:12:47
They There was fear.
00:12:51
They they scared us.
00:12:54
While the medical community turned to
00:12:55
their scientific experts, the Navajo
00:12:58
turned to their own specialists, the
00:13:01
traditional healers or medicine men who
00:13:03
were responsible for the health of the
00:13:05
reservation. They said they were
00:13:07
familiar with this disease and that it
00:13:09
had struck before. They were saying that
00:13:12
uh this outbreak had occurred in the
00:13:14
century in uh 1933 and 1918 when uh it
00:13:18
was preceded by 2 years of plentiful
00:13:20
rains and heavy winter snows in the
00:13:23
mountains.
00:13:25
The tribal healer said the heavy rains
00:13:27
had resulted in a dramatic increase in
00:13:30
the number of mice on the reservation.
00:13:33
And they suspected there was some
00:13:35
connection between the large number of
00:13:38
mice and these deaths, but they could
00:13:41
not say what it was. There was an old
00:13:43
Nashville saying that I learned as a
00:13:45
child that uh if a mouse ever runs over
00:13:48
your clothing, you should burn it. And
00:13:50
uh nobody ever knew what that old saying
00:13:53
meant. Records indicated that there were
00:13:55
heavy rains in 1991 and 92, the two
00:13:59
years preceding the current outbreak.
00:14:03
But health officials could not find any
00:14:05
link between the rain, the growing deer
00:14:08
mice population, and the outbreak.
00:14:12
Meanwhile, in what's known as the
00:14:15
maximum containment section of the CDC
00:14:18
labs, an area reserved for the study of
00:14:20
the world's most dangerous germs and
00:14:23
viruses, investigators performed an
00:14:26
ELISA test or enzyme linked imunosorbent
00:14:30
assay on the tissue samples from the
00:14:33
victims. When a disease strikes, the
00:14:36
body reacts by producing antibodies
00:14:39
which are unique to that disease. The
00:14:42
ELISA test can isolate those antibodies
00:14:45
in order to compare them to the
00:14:47
thousands of samples in the CDC files.
00:14:51
Comparison after comparison was made and
00:14:55
no matches were found until the
00:14:58
investigation took an unexpected turn,
00:15:01
one that would take medical detectives
00:15:04
back in time and halfway around the
00:15:08
world.
00:15:11
[Music]
00:15:12
Within six weeks of Florina Woody and
00:15:15
Melbah's deaths, more than 12 other
00:15:18
young people had also died of the same
00:15:20
mysterious disease. Investigators got a
00:15:24
break in the case when a tourist from
00:15:25
Iceland after visiting the reservation
00:15:28
developed symptoms of the disease.
00:15:31
Investigators now realized the outbreak
00:15:34
was probably environmental and was not
00:15:37
confined to the Navajo.
00:15:40
>> Unfortunately,
00:15:41
somebody um sort of identified this as a
00:15:44
Navajo disease, which it very obviously
00:15:46
wasn't because we were seeing there
00:15:49
there were other cases occurring in in
00:15:51
non-Navajos, but but that that was
00:15:53
particularly offensive, I think, to
00:15:55
people. When CDC investigators compared
00:15:58
the antibodies from the outbreak victims
00:16:01
to those in their vast file of known
00:16:04
diseases, they made a surprising
00:16:07
discovery. The only sample that was in
00:16:11
any way similar was one that was 40
00:16:14
years old. It was a sample taken from a
00:16:18
soldier stationed in Korea in 1950.
00:16:23
During the Korean War, more than 3,000
00:16:26
troops developed high fevers and kidney
00:16:29
failure. About 400 died. Doctors called
00:16:33
it Havirus because it was traced back to
00:16:36
Korea's Honan River. That region was
00:16:40
home to large numbers of striped field
00:16:42
mice.
00:16:44
Feces and urine from infected mice
00:16:47
carried the virus. When it dried out, it
00:16:50
became airborne and was then inhaled by
00:16:54
the soldiers. From there, the virus
00:16:56
attacked the kidneys. But investigators
00:16:59
were uncertain whether this was the same
00:17:02
as the four corners virus. There had
00:17:05
never been a haunt virus reported in
00:17:07
North America. And the four corners
00:17:09
disease attacked the lungs, not the
00:17:12
kidneys. I had no idea what Honda virus
00:17:14
was and looked looked in, you know, my
00:17:17
textbook which had a very short section
00:17:19
on it. Uh, and of course it describes a
00:17:22
disease that occurs in Asia which which
00:17:24
sounded nothing like what we were
00:17:25
dealing with.
00:17:27
>> Was this the same disease? And if so,
00:17:31
how did it travel from Korea to a North
00:17:35
American Indian reservation?
00:17:38
CDC investigators then remembered what
00:17:41
they'd been told by the Navajo
00:17:44
traditional healers.
00:17:45
>> The medicine men had said it when a
00:17:47
remarkably wet winter was followed by
00:17:52
the masting of the the pinion trees.
00:17:54
When when the pinion trees put out um an
00:17:57
abundant supply of nuts, the rodent
00:17:59
populations in the state began to to
00:18:03
grow. And when that happened, young
00:18:06
Navajo died.
00:18:11
>> Investigators caught and tested deer
00:18:13
mice from the Four Corners area. They
00:18:16
found the mice were shedding a virus
00:18:18
with the same DNA profile as the virus
00:18:21
found in Florina Woody and Melbi.
00:18:25
But the DNA profile of this virus was
00:18:28
not identical to the Korean H virus.
00:18:32
Although the DNA profiles were similar,
00:18:35
the strain from the Navajo reservation
00:18:37
was a new one unique to North America.
00:18:40
>> What we found when we did the comparison
00:18:42
was that this was a new honor. That is
00:18:46
the sequence was far enough from any
00:18:49
other known hanavirus that we were
00:18:50
convinced that it was a new virus. It
00:18:53
wasn't just a minor variant on one of
00:18:55
the old viruses. CDC scientists and
00:18:58
Navajo medicine men suspected the North
00:19:00
American HANA virus had been around for
00:19:03
centuries, but since the cases were so
00:19:06
isolated, it had always been
00:19:09
misdiagnosed.
00:19:11
The Navajo made up a greater percentage
00:19:13
of the victims only because they lived
00:19:16
in more rural areas with large deer mice
00:19:19
populations.
00:19:20
In the two years before the outbreak,
00:19:23
heavy spring rains created a bumper crop
00:19:26
of pinion nuts, a rich source of food
00:19:29
for the growing mice population.
00:19:32
Authorities believe that Merryill Bahi
00:19:34
and Florina Woody inhaled the dried
00:19:37
urine and fecal matter from the infected
00:19:40
deer mice when they were house cleaning
00:19:42
or digging in their garden. In my heart,
00:19:45
I think it's it was God's will that
00:19:50
this is what was supposed to happen to
00:19:52
both of them and they were meant for
00:19:54
each other and they were meant to go
00:19:58
together.
00:20:01
>> Health officials recommend that masks
00:20:03
and gloves be worn when cleaning rodent
00:20:06
droppings and that people do everything
00:20:09
possible to keep rodents out of their
00:20:12
homes. They also point out that the four
00:20:15
corners outbreak was identified through
00:20:18
the wisdom of the Navajo medicine men
00:20:22
and the scientists who were smart enough
00:20:25
to listen.
00:20:26
>> We were discovering an old disease that
00:20:29
the traditional healers had discovered
00:20:31
long ago. And that was the I think to me
00:20:33
that was uh the most exciting thing
00:20:35
about this whole investigation. The
00:20:37
Navajo, using an entirely different
00:20:39
approach, looking at the balance of
00:20:40
nature, were able to identify factors
00:20:43
that led them to the same conclusion
00:20:47
that um when rodent populations
00:20:51
um explode the way they did in in the
00:20:53
Four Corners in the spring of 1993,
00:20:56
young Navajo died.
00:20:59
These two very different sets of people
00:21:02
set out on very different paths and
00:21:04
arrived in the same place.
