Forensic Files - Season 4, Episode 12 - With Every Breath - Full Episode

November 04, 2021 / 21:46

This episode covers the mysterious disease outbreak among young Navajo Indians in 1993, the deaths of Merrell Bahi and Florina Woody, and the investigation that followed.

The episode begins with the alarming deaths of over 20 young Navajo individuals in the Four Corners region, which includes parts of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. Merrell Bahi, a talented runner, and his partner Florina Woody both succumbed to acute respiratory failure, raising concerns about a potential epidemic.

Florina's sudden death on Mother's Day at the age of 21 shocked the community, and shortly after, Merrell died during her funeral. The lack of autopsies due to Navajo traditions complicated the investigation, but Merrell's mother defied tradition to seek answers.

Health officials initially feared a contagious disease and considered various possibilities, including bubonic and pneumonic plague, but tests returned negative. The CDC was called in, and traditional Navajo medicine men suggested a connection to increased deer mouse populations due to environmental factors.

Eventually, the investigation revealed a new strain of hantavirus, linked to the deer mice, which had been misdiagnosed for years. The episode concludes with a recognition of the collaboration between Navajo traditional healers and scientists in identifying the disease.

TL;DR

A mysterious disease killed young Navajo in 1993, leading to the discovery of a new hantavirus linked to deer mice.

young navajo indians were dying at an

00:00:18
more than 20 people would die from the

mysterious disease
00:00:22

before

nineteen-year-old meryl bahi
00:01:50
but meryl bahi had something that set
00:01:53
him apart
00:01:54
merle was a very phenomenal person but
00:01:57
where he stood out was his running
00:02:00
ability and
00:02:02
i think if you talk to anybody that saw
00:02:05
him run
00:02:06
you know
00:02:07
they would tell you that it was a gift
00:02:09
that he had
00:02:11
in running and he loved to run
00:02:13
meryl bahi was so fast he won a full
00:02:16
scholarship to the santa fe indian
00:02:18
school a boarding school that was miles
00:02:21
away from his home both physically and
00:02:24
culturally
00:02:25
he didn't
00:02:27
really know how
00:02:29
to put a sheet on a bla on a bed or
00:02:33
you know it was like he threw the
00:02:34
blanket on and that was this that
00:02:36
numeral you um
00:02:38
you put this down first so i i had to
00:02:40
show him how to
00:02:43
to make up a bed
00:02:45
bahi slowly adjusted to his new life he
00:02:48
did well in school
00:02:49
but the transition to life in the city
00:02:51
was difficult
00:02:53
until he met florina woody
00:02:56
something magical happened he met
00:02:58
another navajo girl at a pueblo school
00:03:00
and they fell in love so intensely that
00:03:03
the track coach decided to make florina
00:03:06
the manager of the track team to hand
00:03:08
out the towels so that
00:03:10
merrill would keep his mind on his
00:03:12
running
00:03:12
not long afterwards they had a son
00:03:15
maurice and planned to get married but
00:03:18
shortly after the baby was born florina
00:03:21
woke up one morning with what she
00:03:23
thought was the flu
00:03:25
she was all cold
00:03:27
she kept
00:03:28
you know having these chills
00:03:30
and
00:03:31
it was it was something like
00:03:34
you're getting a cold or getting
00:03:36
sick from a common cold
00:03:38
their lungs were white out meaning they
00:03:40
were just solid they should usually be
00:03:43
dark from from the air and they
00:03:44
obviously had something in there fluid
00:03:46
in there
00:03:48
doctors raced to find out what was wrong
00:03:51
they administered oxygen to help florina
00:03:53
breathe but she went into shock
00:03:56
i saw
00:03:57
one of the nurses coming out of her room
00:03:59
all disturbed and she was crying
00:04:02
and i i knew there that something was
00:04:05
happening
00:04:06
none of the standard procedures worked
00:04:09
and florina's heart stopped beating
00:04:12
the pressure on her lungs was simply too
00:04:15
much for her body to bear
00:04:17
the cause of death
00:04:19
acute respiratory failure
00:04:22
florina woody died on mother's day
00:04:25
she was just 21 years old
00:04:28
and they told us that she was gone
00:04:31
then they allowed us to go to our room
00:04:34
i just couldn't believe that my my baby
00:04:37
has gone
00:04:39
i didn't want to leave her i just want
00:04:41
to hang out right there
00:04:44
doctors had no idea what had caused
00:04:46
florina's sudden death
00:04:49
and they feared that whatever kill
00:04:51
florina woody
00:04:53
might be contagious
00:04:57
florina's death was a particularly cruel
00:05:00
blow to merrell bahi
00:05:03
the mother of his infant son was dead
00:05:06
as bahi prepared flo farina's funeral he
00:05:09
too started to develop similar symptoms
00:05:13
meryl bahi was beside himself
00:05:16
he wasn't feeling well
00:05:18
but
00:05:20
it didn't occur to him
00:05:22
that
00:05:24
that it could possibly be the same thing
00:05:26
that affected florina merrill's physical
00:05:28
condition quickly deteriorated and he
00:05:31
was rushed to the crown point hospital
00:05:33
the same hospital that treated florina
00:05:36
after an initial consultation merrill
00:05:39
did not want to be treated where florina
00:05:41
died so his family drove him to the
00:05:44
indian medical center in gallup an hour
00:05:46
away
00:05:47
shortly before arrival merrill lost
00:05:50
consciousness
00:05:55
as doctors rushed him into the emergency
00:05:57
room
00:05:58
he died
00:06:00
the cause of death
00:06:02
acute respiratory failure
00:06:05
meryl bahi was only 19 years old
00:06:08
ironically merrill died during florina's
00:06:11
funeral service which was taking place
00:06:13
directly across the street from the
00:06:16
hospital
00:06:17
the freedom was going on and there we
00:06:19
had a meeting with our medical
00:06:21
investigator
00:06:23
and meryl's family were coming in for a
00:06:25
flow's journal
00:06:28
and they were told there
00:06:30
and everything just started happening
00:06:32
here and there and that's when i went to
00:06:35
shock
00:06:36
health authorities had no explanation
00:06:38
for what killed the young couple the
00:06:41
only way they could determine the cause
00:06:44
was to perform a complete autopsy but
00:06:47
autopsies are not permitted in the
00:06:49
navajo community
00:06:51
it's forbidden
00:06:53
in
00:06:54
among traditional napos to have
00:06:56
autopsies done and the napa tribal
00:06:58
government can forbid
00:07:01
that if they want to and i don't think
00:07:02
the government people really understood
00:07:04
that we have that sovereign power to do
00:07:06
that even if it's a medical emergency
00:07:09
but with her daughter and future
00:07:11
son-in-law dead beta begay wanted
00:07:14
answers
00:07:15
she took the unusual step of defying
00:07:18
tradition and the tribal elders by
00:07:21
giving doctors permission to perform the
00:07:24
autopsies
00:07:26
the autopsy findings took on a new
00:07:28
importance when merrill and florina's
00:07:30
infant child maurice also fell ill
00:07:35
he was rushed to the hospital and
00:07:37
quarantined
00:07:38
what is it
00:07:40
where did it come from or
00:07:42
what is is it gonna
00:07:44
is it gonna be here or how you know
00:07:47
i asked i had that i had those questions
00:07:50
and i wanted to find out
00:07:53
as authorities awaited the autopsy
00:07:55
results the disease continued its deadly
00:07:59
rampage
00:08:02
within a week of florina and meryl's
00:08:04
deaths the number of dead had risen to
00:08:06
six and each day
00:08:08
more people were being hospitalized with
00:08:11
symptoms
00:08:13
new mexico officials feared
00:08:15
they had an epidemic on their hands and
00:08:18
panic gripped the region
00:08:21
we were getting calls from concerned
00:08:22
citizens and concerned physicians and
00:08:24
concerned school administrators and
00:08:26
concerned everybody
00:08:28
and that always will happen when
00:08:30
something as dramatic as this and as
00:08:32
frightening as this is occurring and
00:08:34
when you do really don't have any good
00:08:36
answers
00:08:37
the autopsies on merrell bahi and
00:08:40
florina woody answered few questions
00:08:44
the mystery illness could not be
00:08:46
identified
00:08:48
and until it was
00:08:50
more people
00:08:51
were destined to die
00:08:57
doctors in the four corners area are on
00:08:59
alert to a deadly respiratory illness
00:09:01
may 1993
00:09:04
navajo radio stations in the four
00:09:06
corners indian reservation
00:09:08
broadcast an alert
00:09:10
young navajo were dying at an alarming
00:09:13
rate and new cases were being reported
00:09:16
every day
00:09:17
so little was known that health
00:09:19
officials were not able to tell
00:09:21
listeners what precautions to take
00:09:24
against the disease
00:09:26
it was frightening for people who came
00:09:28
down with a fever and cough and headache
00:09:30
at the time as a physician we're sending
00:09:33
people home
00:09:34
who we had to accept the possibility
00:09:38
that they
00:09:39
could drop dead
00:09:41
within hours of leaving the hospital
00:09:43
the outbreak was now national news
00:09:46
and since it appeared that only navajo
00:09:49
were affected it was dubbed the navajo
00:09:52
flew
00:09:53
there was pandemonium
00:09:55
it's impossible to keep a string of
00:09:56
deaths like this a secret for very long
00:09:59
one possibility was bubonic plague the
00:10:03
dreaded black death that killed millions
00:10:05
during the middle ages and still strikes
00:10:08
more than a thousand people worldwide
00:10:10
every year
00:10:12
plague symptoms particularly the high
00:10:15
fever muscle pain and fluid buildup bore
00:10:18
similarities to the four corners disease
00:10:22
bubonic plague still
00:10:24
crops up in new mexico from time to time
00:10:27
and so the state is very well equipped
00:10:29
to do that test
00:10:30
and
00:10:32
much to the to the uh
00:10:36
chagrin of the investigators um the test
00:10:39
was negative
00:10:41
it was chagrin because they still didn't
00:10:43
know what had killed this young couple
00:10:46
another possibility was pneumonic plague
00:10:49
a highly contagious disease it attacks
00:10:52
the lungs and kills quickly which is
00:10:55
what happened to the four corners
00:10:57
victims
00:10:58
since it could be treated with large
00:11:01
doses of antibiotics doctors actually
00:11:04
hoped that this was what they'd find
00:11:06
but the autopsies turned up something
00:11:09
different the capillaries of the victims
00:11:12
had collapsed leaving the lungs wet like
00:11:15
large sponges
00:11:17
this was not consistent with pneumonic
00:11:20
plague and it did not resemble anything
00:11:23
medical investigators had ever seen
00:11:26
before
00:11:27
and it was very puzzling
00:11:29
and it was it was frustrating because
00:11:31
you felt like how come we're not smart
00:11:32
enough to figure this out
00:11:34
you know this shouldn't be that hard
00:11:37
so i haven't had i haven't had that many
00:11:39
cases at one time but i didn't
00:11:40
understand local health officials called
00:11:43
in the centers for disease control in
00:11:45
atlanta georgia
00:11:47
the cdc special pathogens team was sent
00:11:51
in to look for possible causes
00:11:54
and they started their investigation in
00:11:56
the trailer that meryl bahi and florina
00:11:59
woody once called home
00:12:01
we had no idea what this was we didn't
00:12:03
know whether it was contagious we didn't
00:12:05
know whether working with the tissues
00:12:06
was going to be dangerous we didn't know
00:12:08
whether you could get this in the
00:12:10
laboratory or from somebody outside in
00:12:13
the field
00:12:14
the outbreak was considered a bio safety
00:12:17
level for hazard the most lethal
00:12:20
designation
00:12:23
dressed in specially designed suits to
00:12:25
keep them free from any contagion
00:12:28
cdc specialists searched the trailer and
00:12:31
the surrounding area
00:12:33
they wore something like that you know
00:12:34
the
00:12:35
astronauts that they're they're sending
00:12:37
off to
00:12:38
outer space
00:12:39
and you know how they dress they were
00:12:41
dressed like that when they came to our
00:12:43
place
00:12:44
and that was even scarier
00:12:47
that there was fear
00:12:51
they they scared us
00:12:53
while the medical community turned to
00:12:55
their scientific experts the navajo
00:12:58
turned to their own specialists the
00:13:00
traditional healers or medicine men who
00:13:03
were responsible for the health of the
00:13:05
reservation they said they were familiar
00:13:07
with this disease and that it had struck
00:13:09
before
00:13:10
they were saying
00:13:11
that this outbreak had occurred in this
00:13:13
century in 1933 and 1918 when
00:13:17
it was preceded by two years of
00:13:19
plentiful rains and heavy winter snows
00:13:22
in the mountains
00:13:25
the tribal healers said the heavy rains
00:13:27
had resulted in a dramatic increase in
00:13:30
the number of mice on the reservation
00:13:32
and they suspected there was some
00:13:35
connection between the large number of
00:13:38
mice and these deaths but they could not
00:13:41
say what it was
00:13:43
there was an old naval saying that i
00:13:44
learned as a child that
00:13:46
if a mouse ever runs over your clothing
00:13:48
you should burn it and
00:13:50
nobody ever knew what that whole thing
00:13:52
meant
00:13:53
records indicated that there were heavy
00:13:55
rains in 1991 and 92 the two years
00:14:00
preceding the current outbreak
00:14:03
but health officials could not find any
00:14:05
link between the rain the growing deer
00:14:08
mice population and the outbreak
00:14:12
meanwhile in what's known as the maximum
00:14:15
containment section of the cdc labs an
00:14:18
area reserved for the study of the
00:14:20
world's most dangerous germs and viruses
00:14:24
investigators performed an elisa test
00:14:28
or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay on
00:14:31
the tissue samples from the victims
00:14:34
when a disease strikes the body reacts
00:14:37
by producing antibodies which are unique
00:14:40
to that disease
00:14:42
the elisa test can isolate those
00:14:44
antibodies in order to compare them to
00:14:47
the thousands of samples in the cdc
00:14:49
files
00:14:51
comparison after comparison was made and
00:14:54
no matches were found until the
00:14:57
investigation took an unexpected turn
00:15:01
one that would take medical detectives
00:15:04
back in time
00:15:06
and halfway around the world
00:15:11
[Music]
00:15:12
within six weeks of florina woody and
00:15:14
merrell bahi's deaths more than 12 other
00:15:17
young people had also died of the same
00:15:20
mysterious disease
00:15:22
investigators got a break in the case
00:15:24
when a tourist from iceland after
00:15:26
visiting the reservation developed
00:15:28
symptoms of the disease
00:15:31
investigators now realized the outbreak
00:15:34
was probably environmental and was not
00:15:37
confined to the navajo
00:15:39
unfortunately somebody
00:15:42
sort of identified this as a navajo
00:15:44
disease which it very obviously wasn't
00:15:46
because we were seeing
00:15:48
there there were other cases occurring
00:15:50
in in navajos but but that that was
00:15:53
particularly offensive i think to people
00:15:56
when cdc investigators compared the
00:15:58
antibodies from the outbreak victims to
00:16:01
those in their vast file of known
00:16:04
diseases
00:16:05
they made a surprising discovery
00:16:08
the only sample that was in any way
00:16:12
similar
00:16:13
was one that was 40 years old
00:16:16
it was a sample taken from a soldier
00:16:18
stationed in korea in 1950
00:16:23
during the korean war
00:16:25
more than 3 000 troops developed high
00:16:27
fevers and kidney failure about 400 died
00:16:32
doctors called it hantavirus because it
00:16:35
was traced back to korea's han tan river
00:16:38
that region was home to large numbers of
00:16:41
striped field mice
00:16:44
feces and urine from infected mice
00:16:46
carried the virus
00:16:48
when it dried out it became airborne and
00:16:52
was then inhaled by the soldiers
00:16:55
from there the virus attacked the
00:16:57
kidneys but investigators were uncertain
00:17:00
whether this was the same as the four
00:17:03
corners virus
00:17:04
there had never been a hantavirus
00:17:06
reported in north america and the four
00:17:08
corners disease attacked the lungs not
00:17:11
the kidneys i had no idea what honda
00:17:13
virus was
00:17:15
and look looked in you know my textbook
00:17:17
which had a very short section on it
00:17:20
and of course it describes a disease
00:17:22
that occurs in asia which which sounded
00:17:24
nothing like what we were dealing with
00:17:27
was this the same disease
00:17:30
and if so
00:17:31
how did it travel from korea to a north
00:17:35
american indian reservation
00:17:38
cdc investigators then remembered what
00:17:41
they'd been told by the navajo
00:17:43
traditional healers
00:17:45
the medicine men had said when a
00:17:47
remarkably wet winter
00:17:49
was followed by
00:17:51
the masting of the the pinyon
00:17:54
trees when the penum trees put out
00:17:56
an abundant supply of nuts
00:17:58
the rodent populations in the state
00:18:01
began to
00:18:03
to grow
00:18:04
and when that happened young navajo died
00:18:10
investigators caught and tested deer
00:18:13
mice from the four corners area
00:18:15
they found the mice were shedding a
00:18:17
virus with the same dna profile as the
00:18:21
virus found in florina woody and merrell
00:18:24
bahi
00:18:25
but the dna profile of this virus was
00:18:28
not identical to the korean hanta virus
00:18:32
although the dna profiles were similar
00:18:35
the strain from the navajo reservation
00:18:37
was a new one unique to north america
00:18:40
what we found when we did the comparison
00:18:42
was that this was a new
00:18:44
honda virus that is the sequence was
00:18:47
far enough from any other known hanovers
00:18:49
that we were convinced that it was
00:18:52
a new virus it wasn't just a minor
00:18:54
variant on one of the old viruses cdc
00:18:57
scientists and navajo medicine men
00:18:59
suspected the north american hantavirus
00:19:01
had been around for centuries but since
00:19:04
the cases were so isolated it had always
00:19:08
been misdiagnosed
00:19:10
the navajo made up a greater percentage
00:19:13
of the victims only because they lived
00:19:16
in more rural areas with large deer mice
00:19:18
populations
00:19:20
in the two years before the outbreak
00:19:23
heavy spring rains created a bumper crop
00:19:26
of pinyon nuts a rich source of food for
00:19:29
the growing mice population
00:19:32
authorities believe that merrell bahi
00:19:34
and florina woody inhaled the dried
00:19:37
urine and fecal matter from the infected
00:19:40
deer mice when they were house cleaning
00:19:42
or digging in their garden in my heart i
00:19:45
think it's
00:19:47
it was god's will that
00:19:50
this is what was supposed to happen to
00:19:52
both of them
00:19:53
and they were meant for each other and
00:19:56
they were meant to go together
00:20:01
health officials recommend that masks
00:20:03
and gloves be worn when cleaning rodent
00:20:06
droppings
00:20:07
and that people do everything possible
00:20:10
to keep rodents out of their homes
00:20:13
they also point out that the four
00:20:15
corners outbreak was identified through
00:20:18
the wisdom of the navajo medicine men
00:20:22
and the scientists who were smart enough
00:20:25
to listen
00:20:26
we were discovering a an old disease
00:20:29
that the traditional healers had
00:20:30
discovered long ago and that was the i
00:20:32
think to me that was the most exciting
00:20:34
thing about this whole investigation
00:20:36
the navajo using an entirely different
00:20:39
approach looking at the balance of
00:20:40
nature were able to identify factors
00:20:43
that led them
00:20:45
to the same conclusion
00:20:46
that
00:20:48
when
00:20:49
rodent populations
00:20:51
explode the way they did in the four
00:20:53
corners in the spring of 1993
00:20:56
young navajo died
00:20:59
these two very different
00:21:00
sets of people
00:21:02
set out on very different paths and
00:21:04
arrived in the same place
