Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 7, Episode 12

March 09, 2017 / 42:52

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers five intriguing cases: a nurse who poisoned patients, a brutal murder witness, the mysterious death of Doris Duke, a serial rapist in New York, and a businessman who vanished after scamming the government.

In Pomona, California, nurse Lette Nikita intentionally poisoned two patients with insulin to prompt an investigation for her own medical needs. After being arrested, she married a fellow inmate and later disappeared, but was eventually found and sentenced to prison.

In Florida, an eyewitness named Antonio reported a murder he witnessed in a sugarcane field, but police are still searching for him to gather more information about the case.

The episode also discusses the controversial death of Doris Duke, a wealthy heiress whose will was contested after her passing. Allegations of manipulation and potential murder surrounded her but no criminal charges were filed.

Additionally, the episode highlights the capture of Eltemio Sanchez, a serial rapist and murderer in New York, who was identified through DNA evidence after terrorizing women for years. Lastly, it recounts the story of Raymond Young, a businessman who disappeared before his sentencing for tax evasion.

Next on Unsolved Mysteries, a young
00:00:08
woman is brutally murdered in a secluded
00:00:10
field. What the killers don't know is
00:00:13
that there is a witness to their
00:00:16
crime. Two patients nearly die after a
00:00:19
nurse poisons their IVs. Will she be
00:00:23
caught before she strikes again?
00:00:26
A man accused of stealing minerals from
00:00:28
the government vanishes while scuba
00:00:31
diving. The FBI believes that he is
00:00:34
still
00:00:35
alive. And the surprising identity of a
00:00:39
serial rapist who eluded police for more
00:00:42
than 20
00:00:44
years. Five fascinating mysteries, some
00:00:48
just waiting to be solved. I'm Dennis

Pomona, California.
00:01:33
Rehab one. Dr. Austin to rehab a problem
00:01:35
in 2011. A medical emergency at a
00:01:37
rehabilitation center. Two patients are
00:01:40
in acute distress.
00:01:43
One of the patients was definitely
00:01:45
flushed, definitely having difficulty
00:01:48
breathing, and the other patient was
00:01:50
unconscious. She didn't respond to me at
00:01:52
all. Let's go get the supervisor now. I
00:01:55
had seen him the night before, and they
00:01:56
were fine. There was nothing wrong with
00:01:58
them, you know, uh other than needing
00:02:00
their medication, you know, they looked
00:02:02
really well. Just laying. It's got the
00:02:05
nursing supervisor down here now. Okay.
00:02:07
The patients have been receiving
00:02:08
intravenous antibiotics for similar
00:02:11
infections. As the staff works to
00:02:13
stabilize them, nursing supervisor
00:02:16
Lzette Nukita remains calm. But Aunt
00:02:19
Gregory, the director of nursing, is
00:02:22
alarmed from the start. I knew that we
00:02:24
had something very seriously wrong here.
00:02:27
There was no way that this could be a
00:02:28
coincidence that this happened to these
00:02:31
patients that that they had the same
00:02:32
reaction from this medication at the
00:02:34
same time.
00:02:36
Paul, I need you to take those IVs and
00:02:37
bring them. The patients are rushed to a
00:02:39
nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
00:02:42
Both have insulin shock. Both survive,
00:02:45
but as a precaution, every IV bag in the
00:02:49
facility is confiscated for
00:02:53
analysis. Hospital officials were
00:02:55
stunned to find that a total of 16 IV
00:02:58
bags had been contaminated with
00:03:01
potentially lethal doses of insulin.
00:03:04
Worse still, it appeared to be
00:03:06
intentional. The FBI was called in to
00:03:09
investigate.
00:03:11
One of the first people the FBI
00:03:13
questioned was Lette Nikita, the nurse
00:03:16
who had administered the IVs. She was a
00:03:19
nursing supervisor on duty that night.
00:03:21
Nukita had worked at the facility for 6
00:03:24
months. In that time, she had earned a
00:03:26
reputation as a hardworking nurse who
00:03:29
took her job very seriously. Now, where
00:03:32
are the IVs kept? They're kept in a
00:03:34
storage room right down the hall. Who
00:03:36
has access to? Only a handful of people
00:03:38
had access to the medical supplies.
00:03:41
Nikita was one of them. She said that
00:03:44
she noticed nothing suspicious about any
00:03:47
of the IV bags. If you have anything to
00:03:49
add, please don't hesitate to call me.
00:03:51
Here's my card. It was determined that
00:03:53
the product tampering had occurred at
00:03:55
the rehabilitation center. Lette Nikita
00:03:58
was working during that shift and the
00:04:01
supervisor on duty and we decided to
00:04:03
call her in for another interview.
00:04:07
Is your name Lette Nikita? Yes. 6 months
00:04:11
into the investigation, Lette Nikita
00:04:13
agreed to take a polygraph test. Midway
00:04:17
through, she dropped a bombshell. Did
00:04:20
you cause insulin to be introduced into
00:04:22
the IVs of two patients on the morning
00:04:24
of February 8th, 1991?
00:04:29
Yes. Are you telling me now you did it?
00:04:34
Yes. When I interviewed Lette, she told
00:04:37
me that she injected the IVs with
00:04:40
insulin to cause a reaction so that an
00:04:44
investigation would be conducted and
00:04:46
ultimately she could turn herself in.
00:04:49
Why?
00:04:51
Because I have had these terrible
00:04:53
headaches and I haven't been able to get
00:04:55
the help that I needed and I have gone
00:04:56
to these doctors and I have gone to the
00:04:58
hospital and I have taken these pills
00:05:00
and nothing. She told me that she had
00:05:01
read or heard that the best medical care
00:05:04
available was for people in prison or
00:05:06
jail and that if she was ultimately
00:05:09
arrested and incarcerated, she would
00:05:12
receive the treatment that she needed
00:05:13
for her headaches. She was playing
00:05:15
basically Russian roulette with these
00:05:17
people's lives. There's no way that you
00:05:19
could measure the amount of insulin to
00:05:21
be given through those IVs and know that
00:05:24
you're going to make them severely sick
00:05:26
without killing them.
00:05:29
Nikita was arrested in jail while
00:05:31
awaiting trial. Is it okay if I get a
00:05:34
drink of water? As far as anyone
00:05:37
remembers, she never requested treatment
00:05:40
for her headaches. It was at jail that
00:05:43
Nukita met a 40-year-old prisoner who
00:05:46
we'll call Steve. He had been convicted
00:05:48
of smuggling heroin.
00:05:51
I want you to promise me one thing. I'm
00:05:52
being transferred up to Lombok next
00:05:54
week. Great. Steve and Nikita managed to
00:05:56
carry on a jail house romance. They met
00:05:59
several times and began to exchange
00:06:02
letters. Go ahead. I'll see you later.
00:06:05
Steve was transferred to the federal
00:06:07
prison in Lampaul,
00:06:10
California. A month before that, Nukita
00:06:13
had been released on bail. She moved in
00:06:16
with her parents to await trial and
00:06:18
finally sought treatment for her
00:06:21
headaches. Nukita and Steve stayed in
00:06:24
close contact through letters and phone
00:06:26
calls.
00:06:28
Hello. She was obsessed with this man
00:06:31
who was always writing to her long
00:06:33
letters and calling on the phone. Yeah,
00:06:35
I was just writing. I think she didn't
00:06:36
have any hope and she was devastated
00:06:39
with the idea of going back to prison
00:06:42
and she used to say, "Well, he's the
00:06:43
only one that loved me.
00:06:46
By virtue of the authority vested in me,
00:06:49
Nikita and Steve were married in the
00:06:51
prison chapel at
00:06:56
Lamp. 3 months later, Nikita told her
00:07:00
family that she was going to Lamp and
00:07:02
would soon
00:07:03
return. What she didn't tell them was
00:07:06
that her husband was going to be
00:07:08
released on parole later that same day.
00:07:12
The FBI believes that Nikita picked
00:07:14
Steve up at the prison gate and they ran
00:07:17
off to start a new life
00:07:21
together. Two months later, Nukita's
00:07:24
family received this letter written in
00:07:26
Spanish and postmarked Oxnard,
00:07:29
California. Nukita wrote, "I love you
00:07:32
and please forgive me for everything I
00:07:35
have done." She also mentioned that she
00:07:38
was working in a school as both a cook
00:07:41
and a nurse.
00:07:43
The fact that Lette is out there
00:07:45
somewhere and has a good chance of
00:07:47
possibly working as a healthcare worker
00:07:50
really scares me because if she has done
00:07:53
this once, what's to say that under
00:07:55
similar circumstances, she won't do this
00:07:58
again?
00:08:00
[Applause]
00:08:03
Update. 3 years after they disappeared,
00:08:06
Lucet Nukita and Steve were tracked down
00:08:09
and arrested in Porto Viarda, Mexico,
00:08:12
Steve was returned to prison for
00:08:14
violating the conditions of his parole.
00:08:17
He has since been released. Nukita
00:08:20
pleaded guilty to six counts of
00:08:22
tampering with medical products and was
00:08:25
sentenced to 18 years in
00:08:28
prison. She served her time and has been
00:08:31
released.
00:08:37
Next, police need your help to find a
00:08:40
mysterious man who witnessed a brutal

00:09:04
A man calls 911 and tells a police
00:09:06
operator that he had just witnessed a
00:09:08
horrible crime in the town of Belglade,
00:09:11
80 miles to the north.
00:09:16
[Music]
00:09:22
In a rushed, nervous voice, the caller
00:09:24
says that he was hunting illegally in a
00:09:27
sugarcane field when he heard a car in
00:09:29
the distance.
00:09:31
The man says that as he ran to hide, a
00:09:34
blue Ford Bronco pulled up. A man and a
00:09:37
woman got out. She called him
00:09:40
Ricardito. What you are about to hear is
00:09:43
a translation of the eyewitness's phone
00:09:45
call to the police. Give me that money.
00:09:48
They started to argue, the girl and him.
00:09:50
Give me the money. I'll get it for you.
00:09:51
I promise I'm going to kill you. It
00:09:53
appeared to be a drug problem. You don't
00:09:54
believe me? You see what I can do? He
00:09:56
was telling her to give him the money. I
00:09:58
don't have the money. She told him she
00:09:59
could not give him the money yet.
00:10:03
There were two of them. The young man
00:10:04
appeared to be Cuban and the other
00:10:06
Mexican by the way he spoke. I'm going
00:10:08
to kill you. Give me the money. She was
00:10:10
shouting, "Ricardito, don't kill me,
00:10:15
Ricardito. Give me the money."
00:10:18
After he killed her, he dragged her
00:10:20
away. So I got down on my knees because
00:10:22
I thought if this person sees me,
00:10:24
they're going to kill me, too.
00:10:27
Then the Bronco pulled away. I saw a
00:10:29
seven and a two on the license plate.
00:10:31
Then I left because I was scared. But
00:10:34
later I thought it's a
00:10:38
crime. Perhaps fearing for his safety.
00:10:41
The eyewitness waited more than a week
00:10:43
before contacting police. He never
00:10:45
revealed his identity, but he did
00:10:47
provide them with enough clues to begin
00:10:49
their investigation.
00:10:52
The caller said that the sugarce field
00:10:54
was behind a building. shaped like a
00:10:57
giant ice cream cone. The Palm Beach
00:11:00
County Sheriff's Department sent a
00:11:01
detective to investigate.
00:11:06
I saw like a small brown object in the
00:11:09
tall grass
00:11:10
area. And after I got there, I realized
00:11:12
it was the body of a female at that
00:11:14
time, but the body was in a state at
00:11:16
which at that time I couldn't determine
00:11:18
which race it was. It was a very heinous
00:11:21
crime. It was very violent. Uh I believe
00:11:24
that the suspect had a lot of disregard
00:11:25
for a human
00:11:27
life. She had been laying there for
00:11:29
approximately a week, maybe a few days
00:11:31
longer. She had passed a decomposition
00:11:33
stage and she had started to get into
00:11:36
mummification. Her right thumb print was
00:11:38
the only print left. The majority of her
00:11:41
fingers had already turned to skeleton.
00:11:43
And with that right thumb print, we were
00:11:45
able to make an identification and prove
00:11:47
that she was in fact Rebecca Young.
00:11:52
Rebecca Young was a 21-year-old resident
00:11:54
of Belgrade. Her mother had also been
00:11:57
murdered when Rebecca was just 12 years
00:12:00
old. At that time, Rebecca went to live
00:12:03
with her
00:12:04
[Music]
00:12:06
aunt. Police looked into Rebecca's
00:12:09
background and discovered that she had
00:12:11
become involved with a man known to be a
00:12:14
petty criminal.
00:12:16
She had gotten hooked up with a person
00:12:19
who had gotten her into a different type
00:12:21
of life than she was accustomed to. He
00:12:24
started introducing her to the drug
00:12:25
scene and prostitution and things of
00:12:28
this nature. He had beat her up on more
00:12:30
than one occasion and had intimidated
00:12:33
her and threatened her into this type of
00:12:34
lifestyle.
00:12:36
Police have determined that the man is
00:12:39
not a suspect in Rebecca's murder, but
00:12:41
they do believe that his activities may
00:12:45
have led to her death. This person may
00:12:48
have robbed the client without Rebecca's
00:12:50
knowledge that he was going to do this.
00:12:53
Rebecca may have suffered the
00:12:54
consequences as a result of his actions.
00:13:00
3 weeks after Rebecca's murder, the
00:13:02
sheriff's department arrested a possible
00:13:05
suspect. He was a local man who
00:13:07
reportedly told a prostitute that he had
00:13:10
killed a black woman. The police
00:13:12
suspected that the man was drunk or
00:13:14
stoned at the time they pulled him.
00:13:16
Would you stop me for sir? Step to the
00:13:18
back. I know what you guys want right
00:13:19
there. Before I could interview him, he
00:13:21
told me that I wanted to talk to him
00:13:22
about a murder. And when I told him no,
00:13:25
I wanted to talk to him about the
00:13:26
prostitute he had been out with, he
00:13:27
said, "I don't want to talk to you. I
00:13:28
want an attorney." And at that point
00:13:31
where we didn't have any further
00:13:32
evidence that he was involved in this, I
00:13:35
had to release him.
00:13:38
Even though the suspect was released,
00:13:40
police believe that he was somehow
00:13:42
involved in Rebecca's murder. But they
00:13:45
need proof. They're searching for the
00:13:47
eyewitness who originally called to
00:13:50
report the crime. Not much is known
00:13:52
about the man except that his name is
00:13:55
Antonio. He said that he called from a
00:13:58
pay phone because he didn't have a line
00:14:00
at home. Judging from Antonio's accent,
00:14:04
police believe that he was born in Cuba.
00:14:07
This is a portion of the actual tape
00:14:10
recording of Antonio's telephone call.
00:14:14
[Applause]
00:14:32
The police and Rebecca's friends and
00:14:34
family hope that Antonio will come
00:14:36
forward. If you have any information,

Next, a wealthy ay dies, leaving a
00:14:49
billion dollar estate. Some say that she
00:14:53
was murdered for her money.

00:15:12
I want you to
00:15:14
understand that I have no family.
00:15:18
80-year-old Doris Duke is about to
00:15:20
change the terms of her will. Long time
00:15:23
ago, but hers is not just any will.
00:15:26
Doris is one of the wealthiest women in
00:15:29
America, worth more
00:15:31
than$1.2
00:15:33
billion. Waiting in the wings is the
00:15:36
person who arguably stands to gain the
00:15:38
most from Doris's death. her butler,
00:15:42
Bernard Laferty. As sole executive of
00:15:45
the estate, Laferty would be given a fee
00:15:47
estimated to be $5 million. In addition,
00:15:52
he would receive $500,000 a year for
00:15:56
life. I cannot believe she would have
00:15:58
put that kind of trust into Bernard.
00:16:00
It's just not possible. There had to be
00:16:03
some collusion. There was a manipulation
00:16:05
between, in my feeling, between Bernard
00:16:07
Laferty, the doctors, and the lawyers.
00:16:14
The last will and testament of Doris
00:16:16
Duke was bitterly contested. There were
00:16:19
even allegations of murder. It was a
00:16:22
sorted end to a charmed life. Doris Duke
00:16:26
was the only child of tobacco tycoon
00:16:29
James Buchanan Duke. She was just 12
00:16:33
years old when her father died, leaving
00:16:35
her $100
00:16:37
million, a third of his holdings. The
00:16:41
press called her the richest girl in the
00:16:43
world. As Doris grew up, her fortune
00:16:46
grew, too, from millions to over a
00:16:50
billion. She personified the rich during
00:16:54
the Great Depression. She was a cross
00:16:56
between um Princess Dye and Madonna in
00:17:00
the press. People treated her as if she
00:17:02
were a major major star. Doris Duke led
00:17:06
an eccentric and lavish lifestyle. She
00:17:09
was married twice, divorced twice, and
00:17:11
reportedly had dozens of lovers. Among
00:17:15
them, movie idol Errol Flynn, General
00:17:18
George S. Patton, and Duke Kahanamoko,
00:17:21
the Olympic swimming champion.
00:17:23
Kahanamoko allegedly fathered Doris's
00:17:26
only child, a daughter who died at birth
00:17:29
in 1940. Doris was
00:17:33
27. It wasn't until Doris was well past
00:17:36
70 that she adopted a daughter, a
00:17:40
35-year-old woman named Shandi Hefner.
00:17:43
In
00:17:44
1987, Doris changed her will and named
00:17:48
Shandi as executive. Eventually, she and
00:17:51
Chandi had a falling out, but not before
00:17:54
Shandi introduced Doris to Bernard
00:17:57
Laferty.
00:17:59
He was an alcoholic. He had a tremendous
00:18:02
drinking problem. Doris told other
00:18:04
family members that she was pretty
00:18:05
disgusted with him. Uh that's why so
00:18:07
many family members were so surprised
00:18:09
when in the end he was in control.
00:18:13
In 1991, Doris Duke removed Shandandy as
00:18:16
executive and replaced her with Dr.
00:18:19
Harry Demopoulos who built himself as a
00:18:23
longevity specialist.
00:18:26
When I went over with her who were the
00:18:28
list of possible candidates for
00:18:30
executive, Bernard wasn't even on the B
00:18:32
list. He wasn't on the A list. He wasn't
00:18:34
on the B list.
00:18:36
Within a year, that had changed. Dr.
00:18:39
Demopoulos was dropped and replaced by
00:18:41
Duke's accountant, who was then replaced
00:18:44
by Duke's half nephew along with the
00:18:46
butler, Bernard Laferty. When Harry
00:18:50
Demopoulos and I heard that, we said,
00:18:53
"This isn't the misstuke that we know.
00:18:55
This cannot have been a Miss Duke who
00:18:57
was acting in her right mind at the
00:19:00
time. On Wednesday,
00:19:03
some say that Laferty was a natural
00:19:05
choice for co-executive. They claimed
00:19:07
that he was Doris's closest adviser and
00:19:10
looked out for her best interests, but
00:19:13
Doris's former housekeeper and her
00:19:15
personal chef, who both sued Laferty for
00:19:18
harassment and breach of contract
00:19:21
disagree. Bernard is definitely a
00:19:24
manipulator. Bernard let people in and
00:19:27
let them out. He picked up the phone. So
00:19:30
after a while, he had control of who got
00:19:32
in touch with Miss Duke. He would
00:19:35
instruct other employees of Miss Duke to
00:19:39
uh have conversations with Miss Duke
00:19:41
about how devoted he was to her. He was
00:19:43
trying to win her trusts and affections
00:19:47
in an obsessive kind of way. Everything
00:19:50
seems to be fine for now. At the age of
00:19:52
78 and within days of naming Laferdy as
00:19:56
co-executive, Doris decided to have
00:19:58
extensive cosmetic surgery. The surgeon,
00:20:02
Dr. Harry Glassman, was reportedly
00:20:05
recommended by
00:20:08
Lavity. 2 days after the surgery, while
00:20:11
on medication, Doris fell at home and
00:20:13
broke her hip. Dr. Glassman referred her
00:20:16
to Beverly Hills physician, Dr. Charles
00:20:19
Kivowitz, who became her primary
00:20:23
physician. Over the next year, Doris was
00:20:25
in and out of the hospital several
00:20:27
times. Following March, she was
00:20:30
suffering from episodes of mild
00:20:32
confusion. Around this time, she
00:20:35
apparently decided to change her will
00:20:38
and to give Bernard Laferty power of
00:20:41
attorney. Papers were drawn up by
00:20:43
attorneys who had been recommended by
00:20:46
Dr. Glman. One of them, Bill Doyle,
00:20:50
helped Doris at the signing. Miss Duke,
00:20:53
we've prepared your will. The signing
00:20:55
took place at Cedar Sinai Medical
00:20:57
Center. Anne Bastitch was in the room
00:21:00
and claims that Doris did not know, but
00:21:03
she was signing. She couldn't really
00:21:06
sign it. She just sat there like a
00:21:08
wooden statue. And Bill Doyle lifted the
00:21:11
will up and put his briefcase underneath
00:21:13
to raise it up. And she still couldn't
00:21:16
sign it. So he slid his hand under her
00:21:19
wrist and sort of propelled her hand
00:21:22
along so she could scroll her name. And
00:21:25
I stood there and I was totally shocked.
00:21:28
I thought this is there's something
00:21:29
really wrong here. Very good. Thank you
00:21:32
very much, mister. In a sworn
00:21:35
deposition, Bill Doyle claims that Doris
00:21:37
was of sound mind and knew what she was
00:21:40
doing. A few weeks later, Laferty was
00:21:44
named sole individual executive of the
00:21:48
estate. He went on a spending spree.
00:21:51
$60,000 on Armani clothing, $25,000 on
00:21:55
jewelry, and several thousand more on
00:21:58
flowers and gifts, all charged to the
00:22:01
estate.
00:22:04
In July of 1993, Doris suffered a
00:22:07
stroke. She returned home after 2 months
00:22:10
in the hospital. Her bedroom had been
00:22:13
turned into a makeshift intensive care
00:22:15
unit with 24-hour nursing supervision.
00:22:19
Miss Duke. Miss Duke. According to Dr.
00:22:24
Kowitz, Doris's condition began to
00:22:27
deteriorate, but a nurse named Tammy
00:22:29
Payet stated the following in a signed
00:22:32
affidavit.
00:22:34
Within a short period of time after she
00:22:36
arrived home, Miss Duke's physical
00:22:38
therapy was cut off and she was placed
00:22:40
on a massive sedation regime by Dr.
00:22:42
Kivitz at the request of Bernard
00:22:44
Laferty, Miss Duke's
00:22:47
butler. But Tammy Payet's credibility
00:22:50
has been called into question. She was
00:22:53
convicted of stealing nearly a million
00:22:55
dollars in valuables from several of her
00:22:58
patients and was sentenced to 8 years in
00:23:01
prison.
00:23:03
On October 7th, Dr. Kibwitz began to
00:23:06
administer the painkiller Demoral by
00:23:09
injection, even though Tammy Payet
00:23:12
claims that Doris was not in pain. Payet
00:23:15
also says Doris's request to return to
00:23:18
the hospital was
00:23:20
ignored. They've got her home. She's
00:23:23
signed the wills. If they let her out,
00:23:25
if they let her meet a friend, if they
00:23:27
let somebody come in there and they
00:23:28
rehab her, she may sign other wills.
00:23:31
This is the time for Miss Duke to
00:23:34
die. She wanted to remain comfortable
00:23:37
and pain-free there in her house. That's
00:23:40
where if she was going to die, she
00:23:42
wanted to die. And Dr. Kwitz followed
00:23:44
her orders. He would have followed any
00:23:45
orders she had given him.
00:23:49
10 days later, a package was delivered
00:23:51
to the Duke mansion addressed to one of
00:23:53
the nurses. And it was from a drug
00:23:56
company somewhere. And Bernard jumped
00:23:58
out of the chair and and he ran over and
00:24:00
he grabbed the box and he looked at it
00:24:02
and then took it downstairs and then a
00:24:05
few minutes later he he could make oh
00:24:08
Miss Duke is going to die
00:24:10
tonight. That afternoon Dr. Kibowitz
00:24:14
substituted morphine for demoral. In her
00:24:17
affidavit, Tammy Payet made note of
00:24:20
Lafert's reaction to the day's events.
00:24:23
Later that evening, Bernard became very
00:24:25
excited and impatient because Miss Duke
00:24:27
was lingering and called Dr. Kivowitz,
00:24:29
explaining that Miss Duke had not
00:24:32
expired. Records indicate that Dr.
00:24:35
Kivowitz returned to the mansion and
00:24:37
administered another 10 mg of morphine.
00:24:42
He recorded that Doris was in a state of
00:24:44
advanced pulmonary edema, a fluid
00:24:47
buildup in the lungs.
00:24:50
Everybody there knew that Miss Duke was
00:24:52
going to be dying with the addition of
00:24:54
that morphine. And you can see the
00:24:56
lockstep relationship. Increased doses.
00:24:58
Drip, drip, drip into Miss Duke. Down
00:25:02
goes the breathing. Down goes the
00:25:03
heartbeat until we're at a flat line.
00:25:07
Miss Duke, can you hear me? By 400 a.m.
00:25:10
on October 28th, Doris Duke was clinging
00:25:13
to life. Miss Duke, can you hear me?
00:25:15
According to the records written by
00:25:17
attending nurse Tammy Payet, Dr.
00:25:19
Kivawitz phoned and increased the
00:25:22
morphine dosage. I asked in the
00:25:24
deposition of the doctor, was she in
00:25:27
pain? Of course not. She's unconscious
00:25:29
and yet we're increasing the morphine.
00:25:32
There's no reason other than pain or
00:25:34
terminating a patient to increase the
00:25:36
morphine at that point. And that's what
00:25:38
happened with Miss Duke. Dr. Kwood did
00:25:41
everything he could to keep her painfree
00:25:42
and comfortable. And whenever he gave
00:25:44
nurse Payet the discretion to increase
00:25:47
the medication if necessary, nurse Payet
00:25:50
increased it far beyond what he
00:25:51
authorized, then claimed 18 months later
00:25:54
that he was the one overmedicating her.
00:25:56
It doesn't make sense.
00:25:59
At 5:15 a.m., according to notes from
00:26:02
another nurse, a 100 mgram dose of
00:26:06
Demoril was added to the morphine drip
00:26:09
by quote telephone order of Dr.
00:26:12
blastsman per Dr. Kivowitz. One hour
00:26:15
later, Doris Duke was
00:26:20
dead. I believe that woman wanted every
00:26:23
chance possible to live. She had a
00:26:26
strong constitution and a will. And I
00:26:29
know she wanted to live and I know they
00:26:32
killed her.
00:26:34

00:26:37
Update. After a prolonged investigation,
00:26:40
the Los Angeles DA's office found no
00:26:43
credible evidence of criminal homicide
00:26:46
in the death of Doris Duke. The civil
00:26:49
suit challenging Duke's will filed by
00:26:52
her former housekeeper and cook was also
00:26:55
dismissed. Bernard Laferdy has since
00:26:58
died.
00:27:02
Next, a surprising update on a rapist
00:27:04
and murderer who terrorized women in
00:27:07
upstate New York. And later, a
00:27:11
businessman vanishes after scamming the
00:27:13
government out of millions of dollars.
00:27:21
[Music]
00:27:25
Previously, we reported on a serial
00:27:28
rapist who had been targeting young
00:27:29
women in and around Buffalo, New York
00:27:32
for more than a decade. One of his first
00:27:35
known victims was a 17-year-old girl
00:27:38
taking a shortcut to school. Shut up.
00:27:42
Don't look at my face. He started
00:27:44
dragging me back into the woods and then
00:27:47
he started strangling
00:27:49
me and then I thought that's it. I was
00:27:52
going to die.
00:27:54
After sexually assaulting the young
00:27:56
woman, the rapist fled. He was described
00:27:59
as a short, stocky, possibly Hispanic
00:28:01
man with a mustache in his
00:28:04
mid30s. His next victim was a
00:28:07
16-year-old girl walking along some
00:28:10
isolated railroad tracks.
00:28:13
The same individual double wrapped a
00:28:15
rope around her neck, gained control of
00:28:17
her, and took her to the bush area
00:28:18
behind me. He forced her to place tape
00:28:20
over her eyes. He bound her and sexually
00:28:22
assaulted
00:28:25
her. Over several months, the attacker
00:28:28
assaulted six women using the same
00:28:30
method before letting them go. His
00:28:33
seventh victim wasn't so lucky.
00:28:37
22-year-old Linda Yalam was a student at
00:28:40
the State University in Buffalo when she
00:28:43
was
00:28:46
attacked. Linda was left to suffocate in
00:28:49
the woods, her mouth and nose wrapped
00:28:52
tight with duct tape. It was
00:28:54
premeditated murder. He planned on
00:28:57
killing her when he grabbed her that
00:28:58
day. Once he put that tape over her nose
00:29:01
and her mouth, there was no chance for
00:29:03
survival.
00:29:04
After four years, the man police call
00:29:07
the bike path rapist struck again. A
00:29:10
14-year-old was his eighth known
00:29:14
victim. This guy strikes so
00:29:16
infrequently. He's very hard to profile.
00:29:19
Very, very difficult. He's either got
00:29:21
tremendous self-control or else he's
00:29:24
hitting in other parts of the country
00:29:26
that we're not aware of.
00:29:31
Update. The so-called bike path rapist
00:29:35
has been identified as 49year-old
00:29:37
Eltemio Sanchez of Chick Taga, New York,
00:29:41
a suburb of Buffalo. Sanchez was a
00:29:44
married churchgoing little league coach
00:29:47
with two grown children. Acting on a
00:29:50
tip, police had put Sanchez under
00:29:52
surveillance. They obtained DNA from a
00:29:55
drinking glass at a restaurant Sanchez
00:29:57
had visited and matched it with DNA
00:30:00
found at some of the crime scenes. A DNA
00:30:04
match also links Sanchez to two earlier
00:30:06
sexual assaults for which another man
00:30:09
was already serving time. In
00:30:12
1985, Anthony Caposi, who suffers from
00:30:16
schizophrenia, was convicted of raping
00:30:18
two women and was sentenced to 35 years
00:30:21
in prison. After 22 years behind bars,
00:30:25
Anthony was released and reunited with
00:30:28
his family, who never doubted his
00:30:33
innocence. By the time that Elteio
00:30:36
Sanchez was arrested, the statute of
00:30:38
limitations had run out on the rape
00:30:40
charges. Sanchez eventually plead guilty
00:30:43
to three counts of murder in the second
00:30:45
degree and was sentenced to 75 years to
00:30:54
life. An April day off the coast of
00:30:57
Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Can you
00:31:00
show me that hole? Raymond Young, his
00:31:02
son Edward, and two friends had been
00:31:04
scuba diving since dawn. At 6:00 p.m.,
00:31:08
Raymond and Edward decided to take one
00:31:11
final
00:31:12
dive. 20 minutes later, Edward surfaced
00:31:16
alone in a panic. Help! Did you see my
00:31:20
dad? No, I haven't seen him. The
00:31:21
peaceful outing became a crisis. Raymond
00:31:24
Young was missing.
00:31:27
A massive search turned up nothing and
00:31:30
Young's family assumed he had drowned,
00:31:33
but authorities were convinced that
00:31:35
Young was alive and well and that he had
00:31:38
staged his own disappearance.
00:31:43
Raymond Young was a type of person who
00:31:44
liked to gamble. He was a chance taker.
00:31:47
He spent millions of dollars in his
00:31:49
activities. He liked to live the good
00:31:51
lifestyle and he saw that he could make
00:31:53
big money fast. Raymond Young was a
00:31:56
flashy self-made millionaire who owned
00:31:58
and operated a wholesale fuel company on
00:32:02
Marco Island, Florida. Message was
00:32:04
right. Opportunity of a decade. The
00:32:07
company distributed diesel fuel for
00:32:09
offshore marine use because he
00:32:12
supposedly sold to wholesalers only.
00:32:15
Young was exempt from paying certain
00:32:18
federal taxes. But when customs
00:32:20
officials found that millions of dollars
00:32:22
were flowing in and out of Young's
00:32:25
personal bank accounts, they began to
00:32:27
suspect that his real business was
00:32:30
scamming the
00:32:31
government. In fact, Young had been
00:32:34
selling his fuel to retail gas stations
00:32:37
in Texas and pocketing the money he
00:32:39
should have been paying in taxes. About
00:32:42
40 cents per gallon sold.
00:32:46
40 cents a gallon may not seem like a
00:32:48
lot of money, but when you multiply that
00:32:49
by the hundreds of thousands of gallons
00:32:51
that Ray Young was distributing, he
00:32:53
could have uh in actuality of defrauded
00:32:56
the government for in excess of $15
00:32:58
million. When the IRS and US Customs
00:33:02
Service launched a joint investigation,
00:33:04
Young began to liquidate his assets.
00:33:07
Eventually, he was charged with 17
00:33:10
counts of tax evasion. But Young left
00:33:14
Florida while the investigation was
00:33:15
still
00:33:17
underway. Several months later, he
00:33:19
surfaced in New Orleans where federal
00:33:22
agents set up a surveillance operation.
00:33:24
They saw Young's Mercedes parked near a
00:33:27
luxury yacht which was being prepared
00:33:29
for a voyage. And although the boat was
00:33:32
flying a foreign flag, records show that
00:33:35
it belonged to Raymond Young. It is our
00:33:38
man. Let's get
00:33:40
him. By all indications, Raymond did not
00:33:43
think he was going to be found guilty on
00:33:44
these charges. I told all of his friends
00:33:46
that he would not be convicted and felt
00:33:48
very confident that that would be the
00:33:50
case. Ray, wait. Now, that was a totally
00:33:52
unexpected verdict. Young could not have
00:33:55
been more wrong. He was found guilty on
00:33:58
16 counts.
00:34:01
Counselor, I am not going to prison.
00:34:03
Even though Young faced up to 13 years
00:34:06
in prison, he was granted bail to
00:34:08
organize his personal and business
00:34:12
affairs. 2 days before his sentencing,
00:34:15
he went scuba diving in the Gulf of
00:34:17
Mexico and has not been seen
00:34:20
since. We do feel that he has millions
00:34:22
of dollars at his disposal and he could
00:34:25
live a very good lifestyle outside of
00:34:26
the United States wherever he pleased to
00:34:28
live. He could be anywhere at this time
00:34:30
living a life of luxury.
00:34:36
Update. 7 years after Raymond Young
00:34:38
disappeared, the US Marshall Service
00:34:41
received a tip that he was living in San
00:34:43
Jose, Costa Rica. Police there set up a
00:34:46
surveillance and after one failed
00:34:48
attempt were finally able to capture
00:34:50
him. Young fought extradition, but he
00:34:53
was eventually returned to the United
00:34:56
States. 4 months later, he was sent to
00:34:59
prison for his original conviction of 7
00:35:02
years. Raymond Young has since been
00:35:09
released. Next, doctors are puzzled by a
00:35:12
strange illness that has afflicted four
00:35:15
children in one family.
00:35:28
Vallejo, California.
00:35:31
Hey, bye. One February day, Christina
00:35:34
Smith returned home from a brownie
00:35:36
meeting. Mommy, I don't feel good. Why
00:35:39
don't you come over here and sit down by
00:35:41
me? I gave her medicine and I brought
00:35:44
her upstairs. So, she stayed up during
00:35:47
the night complaining of her sore legs
00:35:49
and stomach ache, which I actually
00:35:51
thought it was due to the fact from the
00:35:54
cold. The next morning, I thought it was
00:35:56
a good idea for Christina to sleep in.
00:35:59
Just after breakfast, Christina's uncle,
00:36:01
Joseph, stopped by for a short visit.
00:36:04
The children's in the living room. I
00:36:05
went upstairs and I found Christina
00:36:08
laying down. She opened her eyes and
00:36:10
looked at me and there was a glaze in
00:36:12
her eyes. Christina, you better get out
00:36:14
of here. There's something wrong with
00:36:15
Christina. Hurry up. I'm talking to her,
00:36:16
but she's not hearing me. We took her to
00:36:19
the living room onto the couch, and at
00:36:21
that time, we started uh examining her,
00:36:24
asking her what's wrong, and I didn't
00:36:27
even feel like she knew where she was.
00:36:30
By that time, her neck had swelled and
00:36:33
she was having seizures.
00:36:36
Christina, wake up. At that moment,
00:36:38
Tina's husband, Charles, arrived home
00:36:41
from work.
00:36:42
I didn't know what was going on. So, I
00:36:44
walked over and I looked into
00:36:46
Christina's eyes and she looked
00:36:49
relatively unconscious.
00:36:51
And your doctor, what's wrong? My
00:36:53
daughter. Her family rushed Christina to
00:36:55
the nearest hospital. How long has she
00:36:57
been like this? Oh, for about 2 hours. I
00:37:00
knew she was real sick. You have a
00:37:01
seizure? I'm not sure. I was starting to
00:37:04
become real, real frightened. We have an
00:37:06
unconscious child here. I don't know
00:37:08
what's going on.
00:37:10
We were trying to search our minds to
00:37:12
try to come up with what might have
00:37:14
happened, but we had no answers.
00:37:19
Christina Smith was racked by seizures
00:37:22
and her breathing was labored. Then she
00:37:24
developed a fever and her temperature
00:37:26
shot up to
00:37:28
105°. Finally, Christina lapsed into a
00:37:32
coma.
00:37:34
Christina is stable. She has had a
00:37:37
massive seizure and she's no longer
00:37:39
seizing. We've given her medication.
00:37:41
Doctors and Christina's parents had no
00:37:44
idea what caused the sudden illness. But
00:37:47
they were afraid that it might be
00:37:48
connected with what happened to
00:37:50
2-year-old Dominique, the youngest child
00:37:52
of Christina's uncle,
00:37:55
Joseph. A year earlier, Dominique had
00:37:58
also been rushed to the hospital after
00:38:00
suffering the same symptoms as
00:38:02
Christina. Dominique fell into a coma
00:38:05
and suffered severe brain damage. She
00:38:08
died just one month before Christina got
00:38:11
sick. Doctors still have no idea what
00:38:15
caused Dominique's death. I think the
00:38:17
scariest part was being that I was there
00:38:20
once before. I didn't think that these
00:38:22
doctors knew what was going on.
00:38:24
Okay, Christina, here we go. Got
00:38:26
extremely high fever. Uh had great
00:38:29
difficulty breathing. showed severe
00:38:32
abnormal movements of her body. Uh she
00:38:35
had despite all efforts had remained in
00:38:38
a nonresponsive coma state and that
00:38:41
carries a terribly terribly grave
00:38:43
prognosis. How you doing? Fine. You look
00:38:47
at a child and you think it's hopeless.
00:38:50
Many families stay away. In Tina's case
00:38:52
and Charles, they came every day.
00:38:57
We felt that maybe she could hear us and
00:39:00
she can fill us around her.
00:39:03
There goes his ears in your ear. So, we
00:39:05
decided to keep her life as busy as
00:39:08
possible while she laid there
00:39:10
unconscious.
00:39:13
Soon, Christina's room was filled with
00:39:15
getwell cards, posters, and her favorite
00:39:18
toys. The hospital staff even organized
00:39:21
potluck dinners, which everyone ate in
00:39:24
Christina's room. Despite all the
00:39:27
attention, there was no improvement in
00:39:29
her condition. The doctors who were
00:39:32
still baffled by the disease ordered
00:39:34
more tests.
00:39:36
And after all those testing for months,
00:39:38
they still did not locate her illness,
00:39:41
what caused her to become ill. They
00:39:43
realized that she had suffered brain
00:39:45
damage. So they told us that Christina
00:39:48
would remain a vegetable for the rest of
00:39:50
her life. And that normally when a
00:39:52
patient suffers brain damage, they don't
00:39:54
recover.
00:39:55
It was felt at that time that she should
00:39:57
be sent to an institution that could
00:40:00
take care of her uh and just maintain
00:40:04
her in her comeoma state.
00:40:07
The Smiths refused to give up hope. They
00:40:10
decided to look after Christina at home.
00:40:13
Okay, Christina, it's time for your
00:40:15
favorite TV show. When we brought
00:40:17
Christina home, I was happy but then
00:40:20
scared, not knowing what might happen.
00:40:23
Put your brakes on. Okay. And mommy's
00:40:27
going to go right behind you on the
00:40:28
couch. The only thing I could do was
00:40:30
just play it by ear and go with the
00:40:32
emotions and how I felt for her care as
00:40:35
each day went on.
00:40:38
But on this particular day, 6 weeks
00:40:41
after Christina had come home, something
00:40:44
extraordinary happened.
00:40:48
I worry. Without any apparent cause,
00:40:52
Christina completely awakened from her
00:40:55
coma. And I didn't know what was going
00:40:57
on. My heart dropped. I was so excited.
00:41:00
I was in tears. It was incredible. You
00:41:04
know, I've never had a feeling like
00:41:05
that. It was incredible.
00:41:08
Christina's recovery was remarkable. She
00:41:11
began to move her arms and legs. Her
00:41:13
speech improved, and she started the
00:41:15
long fight back to health. Soon she was
00:41:19
enrolled in physical therapy. It was
00:41:22
just an exciting, incredible change in a
00:41:24
youngster who had been so desperately
00:41:26
ill. All the 30 years that I've been in
00:41:28
this field, I've never seen a family or
00:41:30
a situation exactly like this. It was
00:41:33
just just unique. This mystifying
00:41:36
illness seems to be centered on Tina and
00:41:39
Joseph's family. In total, three of
00:41:42
Christina's cousins have been afflicted.
00:41:45
Two of them did not recover and died. In
00:41:49
my own medical experience, I've never
00:41:51
seen anything uh to equal the
00:41:53
devastation in this particular family.
00:41:55
And certainly, it it is one of the
00:41:57
unsolved medical mysteries at this time.
