Unsolved Mysteries with Dennis Farina - Season 1, Episode 12 - Full Episode

March 09, 2017 / 42:54

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the murder of Marine David Cox, the search for the Yeti, a hostage situation involving a terrorist, and the case of a missing girl.

David Cox, a Marine stationed in Guantanamo Bay, was involved in a hazing incident that led to the death of a fellow Marine. After the incident, Cox was convicted of simple assault and later found murdered under suspicious circumstances. His story inspired the film A Few Good Men, which he felt exploited his experience.

The episode also discusses the Yeti, a legendary creature in the Himalayas. Explorers like Eric Shipton and Tom Slick have reported evidence of the Yeti, including large footprints and a mysterious hand preserved in a temple.

In a separate segment, a terrorist named Victor Manuel Herena executed a daring heist, stealing $7 million from an armored car. He was later linked to a Puerto Rican terrorist group and remains on the FBI's most wanted list.

Finally, the episode features the story of Sarah Powell, a young girl who suffered amnesia after being kidnapped. Her memories gradually returned, revealing a terrifying encounter with her abductors.

TL;DR

This episode covers David Cox's murder, Yeti evidence, a major heist, and a girl's kidnapping and amnesia.

audiences all over the world lined up to
00:01:38
see Tom Cruz and Jack Nicholson in the
00:01:41
hit movie A Few Good Men but few were
00:01:44
aware that it was based on a real story
00:01:47
one that may have led to the murder of a
00:01:50
courageous
00:01:55
Marine David Cox joined the Marine Corps
00:01:58
straight out of high school being one of
00:01:59
of the proud and the few was all that he
00:02:02
ever
00:02:03
wanted David was stationed at the US
00:02:05
Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay Cuba one
00:02:09
day while on duty David became aware of
00:02:12
a problem another platoon member PFC
00:02:15
William alvado had written to his
00:02:17
Senator complaining about Marine
00:02:21
misconduct we didn't actually decide to
00:02:25
have a code red for Alvarado on our own
00:02:28
our platoon Commander had given us an
00:02:31
implied order that if we were good
00:02:34
Marines something should
00:02:37
happen Saturday night we went into
00:02:39
Alvarado's
00:02:41
room what the hell's going on here we
00:02:45
blindfolded him and gagged
00:02:48
him and then dragged him off of his
00:02:52
bed Dave started shaving his head and
00:02:55
within 5 minutes he had stopped
00:02:57
struggling he's not breathing get the
00:03:00
gag David Cox convinced his platoon to
00:03:03
stop The Hazing oh she's back up back up
00:03:05
stop it so we removed the gag and he
00:03:07
still didn't come around he was still
00:03:10
unconscious so at that point we started
00:03:12
to panic everybody else get to your room
00:03:14
alado was rushed to the hospital he
00:03:17
recovered but his 10 attackers were
00:03:19
brought up on charges including David
00:03:24
Cox relax Cox sir yes sir Don mcui was
00:03:28
appointed to defend David
00:03:30
they're going to charge you with
00:03:31
attempted murder they got a confession
00:03:33
from you and they get a pretty beat up
00:03:34
Marine doesn't look too good sir I was
00:03:37
just following orders sir I told David
00:03:40
uh that this was the defense obedience
00:03:42
to orders that had not been successful
00:03:44
at nberg uh had not been successful with
00:03:46
Lieutenant C mili and plus we had a
00:03:49
colonel denying he ever gave an order
00:03:51
David claimed the code red started with
00:03:53
implied orders from his Superior
00:03:55
officers want to risk 20 years in the BR
00:03:57
so we had the additional burning of now
00:03:59
saying he was following an implied order
00:04:01
and it was a very difficult case to win
00:04:03
and I told David that he decided he
00:04:05
wanted to fight it because he believed
00:04:06
in his heart that he didn't do anything
00:04:09
wrong at his trial David was convicted
00:04:12
of simple assault he was sentenced to
00:04:14
time already served in the
00:04:17
brig he then completed his duty and
00:04:20
received an honorable
00:04:22
discharge then he returned to civilian
00:04:24
life in his hometown near
00:04:28
Boston years later A Few Good Men was
00:04:31
released David felt that the filmmakers
00:04:33
had stolen his story one of the most
00:04:35
realistic points in the movie other than
00:04:37
that David's reaction was that he was
00:04:39
stunned for one it was this movie
00:04:42
company that was making millions of
00:04:44
money off of his story and if it weren't
00:04:46
for him the story never would have
00:04:47
existed to in the first
00:04:50
place David and some of the other
00:04:52
Marines involved in the code R sued the
00:04:55
movie production company while they
00:04:57
waited for a ruling David spoke out
00:04:59
about his case on radio talk
00:05:03
shows David was living with his
00:05:05
girlfriend Elaine he was hoping his
00:05:07
temporary job with UPS would become
00:05:10
permanent Dave was very enthusiastic
00:05:12
about getting on board with them I think
00:05:14
it was something where he felt that he
00:05:16
could have a full-time steady
00:05:21
occupation the night before he was
00:05:23
supposed to get the good news his back
00:05:25
was giving him trouble and he spent the
00:05:27
night on the couch I hope UPS
00:05:32
calls have a good
00:05:34
day Elaine left at about 8:30 a.m. and
00:05:37
then called home at about noon love you
00:05:40
David didn't answer but there was a
00:05:42
message for him on the
00:05:44
machine hi message for David Cox this is
00:05:47
Jim at UPS got some good news for you
00:05:50
give me a call thank you so I was really
00:05:52
excited I like got cold Dave's going to
00:05:53
get this job and he's going to be so
00:05:55
excited and then I called back again at
00:05:58
1:00 to check the messages and that
00:05:59
message was still there and the UPS guy
00:06:02
had called again
00:06:04
too
00:06:05
David at 5:30 p.m. Elaine returned home
00:06:11
David when I came into the house that
00:06:13
night after work I realized right away
00:06:16
that the doors to all the rooms were
00:06:18
open and our rabbit who we usually just
00:06:20
kept in the kitchen was like hopping all
00:06:22
over the
00:06:24
place hi David it's Jim again at UPS
00:06:27
please give me a call thank you David's
00:06:30
truck was still in the driveway with the
00:06:32
keys in the ignition his uncashed
00:06:34
paycheck was on the dashboard and his
00:06:36
9mm gun was in the glove box but David
00:06:40
was
00:06:41
gone I immediately had a feeling of
00:06:44
dread because I know David well enough
00:06:46
David would not just disappear and right
00:06:50
from the start I was very
00:06:51
concerned as the days went on and there
00:06:54
was no news from him I mean we checked
00:06:56
his bank account there was no activity
00:06:57
on his bank account you start to believe
00:07:00
that you know maybe something did happen
00:07:02
but
00:07:05
why the answer came with the spring thaw
00:07:09
the body of David Cox was discovered on
00:07:11
the banks of a river in Medfield
00:07:14
Massachusetts about 5 miles from his
00:07:19
apartment he was shot according to the
00:07:21
me four times once at the base of the
00:07:24
rear of the neck and three times in the
00:07:27
left side torso area
00:07:30
it was clear that robbery was not the
00:07:32
motive the idea on this Bo says that
00:07:34
David clk's from David's cash and his
00:07:36
credit cards were still in his well I
00:07:38
don't know if that's this individual and
00:07:39
police rule out a random we have photo
00:07:42
come we'll take U secure the area and
00:07:44
we'll take some pictures investigators
00:07:46
are convinced David left home with
00:07:48
someone that he knew it's our belief
00:07:51
that he get in the car willingly that he
00:07:53
knew who was coming to pick him up and
00:07:55
that he went to this area and walked
00:07:57
into the woods with this person
00:08:03
I think that if it was somebody that was
00:08:04
just holding a gun in him or something
00:08:06
like that that they would do it within
00:08:08
the first 30 or 40 yards into the woods
00:08:11
David was found almost 3/4 to a mile
00:08:14
walk into the
00:08:22
woods I don't know why David was killed
00:08:25
I personally believe it had something to
00:08:27
do with the military he was taken out of
00:08:29
his house without signs of struggle uh
00:08:32
he was wearing his Marine Corp jacket
00:08:34
which he never wore he was found between
00:08:37
two hunting ranges where gunshots would
00:08:39
not be unusual and he was murdered
00:08:41
execution
00:08:45
style now there is a movie opening
00:08:47
tonight called A Few Good Men after the
00:08:49
release of A Few Good Men David was
00:08:51
quite vocal about his story and the US
00:08:54
activities in Cuba David's family
00:08:56
believes he may have talked too much the
00:08:59
Colonel had implied to us to uh
00:09:02
discipline a certain Marine after I
00:09:04
heard that interview on the radio I
00:09:06
spoke to him and I said I don't like
00:09:08
what you're doing I think what you're
00:09:09
doing is
00:09:10
dangerous I think he felt too free to
00:09:13
just speak his
00:09:15
mind this guy there he's a supervisor
00:09:18
David's brother had a different Theory
00:09:20
suggesting another possible scenario he
00:09:23
thought that perhaps the murder was
00:09:24
connected to David's job at UPS stealing
00:09:29
yeah stealing l a couple of months
00:09:30
before Dave disappeared he had mentioned
00:09:32
to
00:09:33
me that he had come upon a supervisor
00:09:36
and one of the drivers involved in some
00:09:40
type of activity what he believed to be
00:09:41
was theft at this point uh the
00:09:44
investigation's still open uh it'll
00:09:46
remain open until we solve
00:09:47
it we'll follow any leads that come
00:09:50
through vigorously and remain to do that
00:09:53
until it is
00:09:55
solved if you have any information about

next evidence that the legendary
00:10:09
creature called Yeti really
00:10:20
exists the
00:10:22
Himalayas the site of the world's
00:10:24
highest mountain and one of its most
00:10:26
intriguing Mysteries
00:10:30
for centuries the sherpa people native
00:10:32
to the Himalayas have told frightening
00:10:35
Tales of a strange halfman half ape
00:10:38
called the
00:10:40
yeti to the sherpers yeti has always
00:10:44
been very real and very much alive some
00:10:47
Western explorers agree they have found
00:10:50
convincing evidence that the
00:10:52
Sherpas may be
00:10:56
right several Expeditions have uncovered
00:10:58
my ing stories of strange humanlike
00:11:01
creatures who live in the
00:11:05
Himalayas in 1951 Eric Shipton a world
00:11:08
famous Mountaineer came across a curious
00:11:11
set of
00:11:13
tracks this was the first clear evidence
00:11:16
that the yeti might in fact be real the
00:11:20
photograph of the shipon footprint is
00:11:22
very big piece evidence because it
00:11:24
showed toes individual toes it showed a
00:11:27
squat Square footprint which a lot of
00:11:29
the other Expeditions had found but not
00:11:32
had good photographic equipment with
00:11:35
them the footprint was 13 in long and 8
00:11:38
in wide it didn't look like it was made
00:11:41
by a man or an
00:11:44
ape in
00:11:46
1957 a Texas oil man named Tom Slick and
00:11:50
Explorer Peter burn set off for the
00:11:52
aroon valley in northeastern Nepal in
00:11:55
search of Yeti Tom Slick's um interest
00:11:59
in in the beginning was to find out uh
00:12:01
if the yeti were really there and uh
00:12:03
that's the reason he came on the first
00:12:05
reconnaissance I had been hearing about
00:12:08
the yeti for years ever since I was a
00:12:10
child but I think that what eventually
00:12:12
convinced me that they were there was
00:12:14
meeting with the sherpers and talking
00:12:16
with them face to face Namaste
00:12:19
Namaste the sherpers viewed the yeti as
00:12:22
a real living creature uh not as a
00:12:25
mythical creature they call him a hairy
00:12:27
man that lived out there separate from
00:12:29
them on the first Expeditions we took
00:12:31
along with us 8 by1 pictures of a
00:12:34
chimpanzee a gorilla A Primitive man and
00:12:36
so on and they used to point to the
00:12:39
Primitive man and say that's the yeti in
00:12:41
fact they thought we had a picture of
00:12:43
the Yeti when they saw
00:12:44
that
00:12:47
Yeti the sherpers described the yeti to
00:12:49
us always as um being a manlike and form
00:12:54
um about 5' 6 5' 7 5' 8 not not very
00:12:58
large covered with hair walking upright
00:13:01
uh the face was Bare of hair Palms of
00:13:03
the hands that sort of
00:13:06
thing slick and burn decided to split up
00:13:09
to cover a wider search
00:13:11
area each made his own startling
00:13:16
Discovery we started out from our camp
00:13:19
in the early morning and we simply chose
00:13:21
a mountain and I came across a line of
00:13:24
[Music]
00:13:26
footprints Yeti you're sure yet
00:13:30
bti Peter
00:13:35
yeti in Peter Burns photograph the yeti
00:13:38
footprint is on the left on the right is
00:13:42
the much smaller bootprint of one of the
00:13:44
Expedition
00:13:46
members St Tom St Tom what is it in
00:13:50
another part of the valley Tom Slick and
00:13:52
his Sherpa guides discovered a similar
00:13:55
set of
00:13:56
tracks you're saying these are ye TRS
00:13:59
this the significance of the of the
00:14:01
prince that Tom Slick
00:14:03
found is that they were in mud whereas
00:14:06
snow will distort with heat and with
00:14:08
wind and so on mud will not he only saw
00:14:11
two or three because it's very hard to
00:14:13
track in that stuff in fact he was lucky
00:14:15
to find
00:14:17
them a plaster cast of the footprint was
00:14:20
shipped to the US to be
00:14:22
analyzed the print measured 10 in long
00:14:25
and 7 in wide it was similar to the
00:14:28
footprint discovered by Eric Shipton 6
00:14:31
years
00:14:32
earlier it was a short squat almost
00:14:35
Square type of footprint and I sent it
00:14:38
to the various physical anthropology
00:14:40
experts around the country and what they
00:14:43
usually the terminology came back was
00:14:46
unique but we don't know what it
00:14:49
is in February of 1958 Peter burn
00:14:53
embarked on another Expedition on this
00:14:56
trip he met a Buddhist monk who had an
00:14:58
amazing story to
00:15:00
tell you like Scotch this this old
00:15:04
man and uh one evening while we were
00:15:06
sitting there having a drink and talking
00:15:08
he said you know that up in the uh
00:15:11
Temple we have a hand hand a what yet
00:15:17
hand and he said would you like to see
00:15:19
it and I said
00:15:20
yes so we went back up to the temple and
00:15:24
he showed me this hand
00:15:29
about the size of a human hand cut off
00:15:31
at the wrist uh I considered it very
00:15:33
significant and I took some pictures of
00:15:35
it immediately some flash pictures I
00:15:38
asked the Lamb of course could I have it
00:15:40
and he said no he said it must never
00:15:42
leave the temple here if it leaves the
00:15:44
temple various calamities will befall
00:15:46
the temple and the community and so
00:15:50
on the photographs of the Yeti hand were
00:15:53
unlike anything scientists had seen
00:15:55
before was it human or was it ape or was
00:15:58
it an entirely new species they needed
00:16:01
the actual hand or at least a piece of
00:16:03
it to find
00:16:04
[Music]
00:16:07
out the next year Peter burn returned to
00:16:10
the monastery with another bottle of
00:16:12
Scotch for the Monk and an outrageous
00:16:16
plan I cut the finger off and I replaced
00:16:19
it with the human finger it took quite a
00:16:22
long time to wire the whole thing
00:16:24
together put it back in the box and U
00:16:27
nobody ever knew anything about it and
00:16:29
everything everybody actually was
00:16:30
perfectly happy they still had their
00:16:32
hand it still had its
00:16:34
fingers the finger was brought back to
00:16:37
London to be
00:16:39
examined it was sent to me and I sent it
00:16:41
to some the 20 experts which I thought
00:16:44
should look at the hand and they were
00:16:46
about equally divided whether it was
00:16:48
human or whether it was some type of
00:16:51
primate known or
00:16:52
unknown Dr agago put a tissue sample
00:16:56
from the bone fragment in an envelope in
00:16:58
his desk it remained there for more than
00:17:01
30
00:17:05
years when we learned of the bone
00:17:07
fragment in Dr agaj Gino's desk drawer
00:17:10
we asked the University of California to
00:17:12
analyze
00:17:14
it the results were inconclusive but
00:17:18
seemed to indicate that the tissue
00:17:20
probably came from a human hand the
00:17:23
problem with something as vague as the
00:17:26
yeti is that almost any result you have
00:17:28
can be fitted into the theory so I'm
00:17:31
sure that most Believers will say well
00:17:34
this is great this proves that the yeti
00:17:36
is some sort of subhuman species I think
00:17:39
that's what we've always thought uh that
00:17:41
it wasn't an animal that it wasn't an
00:17:43
upright walking ape because Apes don't
00:17:45
walk upright anyway that it was um a
00:17:48
homonid a human form of some
00:17:52
kind meanwhile the sightings of Yeti
00:17:56
continued I had made camp at 16,500 ft
00:18:00
when out of the darkness a very loud
00:18:02
piercing call began that sounded like
00:18:05
nothing I'd ever heard before it moved
00:18:08
around it circled our campsite it would
00:18:10
get closer it would get farther away it
00:18:13
would call intermittently and the call
00:18:15
was always very loud and very piercing
00:18:18
and very
00:18:21
frightening I was on a distance of 10 m
00:18:24
so it was my impression it's bigger than
00:18:27
me it was quite hairy and strong with
00:18:32
short legs the body was quite dark dark
00:18:36
brown black hairs long long hairs and he
00:18:40
has quite a lot of hairs on the on the
00:18:43
on the on the head I have to leave it
00:18:44
open that I do not know what the
00:18:46
abominal Snowman is but I feel there is
00:18:49
a very good chance probably 50/50 that
00:18:53
something resembling the thing they're
00:18:55
looking for does exist
00:18:57
[Music]
00:18:59
perhaps these mountains are home to an
00:19:01
elusive half-human species or perhaps
00:19:04
Yeti is just a myth after all either way
00:19:08
we must remember that a new species is
00:19:11
discovered almost every year you never
00:19:13
know Yeti may still surprise
00:19:19
us coming up when her home is invaded by
00:19:22
Intruders a young girl is stricken by
00:19:25
amnesia
00:19:35
14-year-old Sarah Powell was home from
00:19:37
school with the flu when she woke up she
00:19:39
had absolutely no idea where she was or
00:19:43
why she was there she didn't even
00:19:46
remember her
00:19:50
name I remember this little dog I was
00:19:54
licking my face and that's what woke me
00:19:57
up I tried to move move and I realized
00:19:59
that I was tied
00:20:00
[Music]
00:20:02
up I had no recollection of who I was or
00:20:06
why I was tied
00:20:08
up tried to remember things but as soon
00:20:11
as I started asking myself who I was and
00:20:14
what I was doing there it upset me
00:20:17
more I grabbed the phone cord with my
00:20:19
teeth and pulled it off the bed and that
00:20:21
knocked the phone off the hook and then
00:20:24
I thought who am I going to call I don't
00:20:26
know anybody I don't even know where I'm
00:20:27
at and then I looked down I saw that
00:20:29
there was a redial
00:20:31
button
00:20:33
hello I need some help the girl reached
00:20:36
the local post office one of the
00:20:39
employees was a woman named Deborah pal
00:20:42
they had a child on the phone the child
00:20:45
said that everything in the room was
00:20:46
pink and there were teddy bears
00:20:49
everywhere and I knew at that point that
00:20:52
there there was no doubt in my mind it
00:20:53
was
00:20:54
Sarah Sarah was Deborah's 14-year-old
00:20:58
daughter
00:20:59
she had stayed home sick from school
00:21:01
that day what's going on is she all
00:21:03
right we don't know we haven't gotten
00:21:04
into the house
00:21:05
yet
00:21:07
SAR when we went into the house and I
00:21:09
saw it was ransacked I knew she was in
00:21:11
big trouble S I was scared I was
00:21:14
frightened I didn't know what I was
00:21:16
going to find Sarah
00:21:20
ma'am
00:21:22
Sarah don't Hur me Sarah honey it's
00:21:26
Mommy it's what's wrong honey it's Mommy
00:21:28
don't hurt me I didn't know what to
00:21:30
think what to do the more I tried to go
00:21:34
toward her and and help her she began to
00:21:38
Panic it's all right Sarah I'm a
00:21:40
policeman just let me get you out of
00:21:42
this my first impression was she was a
00:21:46
teenager that was up to
00:21:48
something and probably did not want her
00:21:50
parents to find out uh what had happened
00:21:54
that
00:21:55
day the police had good reason to be
00:21:57
suspicious after searching the house
00:22:00
they found no signs of forced entry and
00:22:02
no fingerprints or Footprints anything
00:22:06
and we later learned that nothing was
00:22:08
taken so these sort of things make us
00:22:12
think that she's going to be able to
00:22:14
tell us what went on and U uh she will
00:22:18
know who it is and we'll solve this as
00:22:20
as soon as Sarah's ready to deal with it
00:22:23
Sarah did you get yourself into some
00:22:25
trouble here is that why you're afraid
00:22:28
to say anything anything to
00:22:30
me I can't remember anything that
00:22:32
happened I just know that I woke up all
00:22:35
tied up I could tell that they thought I
00:22:38
was holding something back I was trying
00:22:41
as hard as I could they would show me
00:22:42
pictures and ask me if I remembered my
00:22:44
parents and um I couldn't remember
00:22:48
anything after 2 months of trying to
00:22:51
remember her family and 2 months after
00:22:53
struggling with even the most basic
00:22:55
skills something unpredictable
00:22:59
happened Sarah honey what is it s
00:23:03
Sarah Sarah honey what is
00:23:07
it I need some help somebody help I was
00:23:11
scared to death I didn't know what was
00:23:12
happening I thought what in the world
00:23:14
this looks like a seizure go get the
00:23:16
school
00:23:18
nurse
00:23:19
[Music]
00:23:25
okay I and I remember thinking maybe
00:23:29
this is the memory coming back but I
00:23:31
couldn't be sure I didn't let them in
00:23:34
the memories had returned in a
00:23:35
terrifying
00:23:40
rush I remembered walking up the stairs
00:23:43
when I heard a loud
00:23:45
noise so I started running up the stairs
00:23:48
and I heard a second loud
00:23:50
boom and that's when I saw people trying
00:23:53
to break in the window I saw the phone
00:23:55
sitting on my bed so I just Dove onto my
00:23:58
my bed and called my mom at
00:24:03
[Applause]
00:24:04
work the front door was locked with a
00:24:07
double
00:24:08
deadbolt and Sarah couldn't find her
00:24:11
keys then suddenly everything was
00:24:16
quiet I started sneaking up the stairs
00:24:18
and stood up slowly and I looked in my
00:24:20
room and nobody was there
00:24:24
[Music]
00:24:31
don't look up stay right here don't look
00:24:34
up I promise he just pushed my head down
00:24:36
on the bed and put a pillow on my head I
00:24:38
believe he was trying to kill me that's
00:24:39
enough this ain't funny shut up
00:24:42
right I was at the point where I just
00:24:44
couldn't hold my breath anymore so I
00:24:46
just went limp and pretended like I
00:24:49
either passed out or
00:24:55
dead you just had to get a look didn't
00:24:57
you
00:25:02
and that's the last thing I remembered
00:25:04
when we passing out and uh that's what I
00:25:07
remembered in my first seizure and I
00:25:10
thought that was all at the time but it
00:25:12
turned out that it
00:25:14
wasn't over subsequent seizures Sarah
00:25:17
began to recall the rest of the
00:25:24
story I remembered waking up and nobody
00:25:28
was in the room except for the smaller
00:25:29
guy why are you doing this to
00:25:32
me look you just got to be quiet okay
00:25:34
I'm I'm going to tie you up but you be
00:25:36
all right bigger guy that's when he
00:25:38
walked in and saw us
00:25:41
talking the bigger guy he had the gun
00:25:44
for such good friends now I'm sure
00:25:46
you're going to love this he had it to
00:25:48
my
00:25:49
head please come on shut up shut up man
00:25:53
and you Tire
00:25:55
up I know that there were downstairs
00:25:57
Reds acing the house because I could
00:25:59
hear things fall into the floor the
00:26:01
smaller guy unraveled the phone cord
00:26:04
once and plugged the phone back in and
00:26:06
set it on the bed I think he felt sorry
00:26:09
for
00:26:11
me Sarah was literally in a
00:26:14
life-threatening situation and then two
00:26:16
things happened that probably insulted
00:26:18
her brain one was that she got hit in
00:26:21
the head and the other one was that she
00:26:22
was suffocated so that the combination
00:26:25
of
00:26:26
Terror and a psychological Amnesia
00:26:28
component and the physical insults I
00:26:32
think combined to result in this unique
00:26:35
Amnesia
00:26:37
presentation can you describe those
00:26:39
people to me the police however remain
00:26:42
skeptical they even put Sarah under
00:26:44
hypnosis to see if her story would hold
00:26:47
up there's a big guy with
00:26:51
muscles she told the same story that she
00:26:54
had always told the hypnotist told me in
00:26:57
his opinion she was being
00:26:59
truthful I believe that I've remembered
00:27:01
the attack accurately I don't I don't
00:27:03
think there's anything else to remember
00:27:06
it's always possible but um I really
00:27:08
feel like everything is here and um I'm
00:27:12
ready to uh maybe see if I can get some
00:27:16
answers and find out why this all
00:27:19
happened this is a composite of the tall
00:27:22
male Intruder as he might look without
00:27:24
the stocking mask he's about 5 10 in and
00:27:28
very muscular he has a tattoo of a Cobra
00:27:31
on his right bicep or shoulder if you

California Tom Ro and Barbara Rondo love
00:28:05
nothing more than to hit the road on
00:28:07
their Harley
00:28:09
Davidson after 15 years together cycling
00:28:12
was a passion that they
00:28:16
share we've known each other since 76 in
00:28:20
all our extra time was spent
00:28:23
riding Tom's my father lover
00:28:28
teacher guide times of my
00:28:35
life Tom just accepted a well-paid
00:28:37
management position with a company that
00:28:39
played at aircraft Parts 3 days before
00:28:42
Tom was to start his new job he drove
00:28:44
Barbara to work and then they made plans
00:28:46
to meet for lunch okay don't be late

00:28:55

00:28:58
still had not heard from him

Tom but an ominous pattern soon
00:29:26
emerged the newspaper was still unopened
00:29:29
strange since Tom always read the sports
00:29:32
page in the morning a motorcycle battery
00:29:35
that Tom had planned to installed that
00:29:36
day was still on the counter and the
00:29:39
answering machine was off which meant
00:29:41
that Tom had planned to be at home most
00:29:44
of the
00:29:45
[Music]
00:29:47
day I didn't sleep at all that
00:29:51
night just trying to figure out where
00:29:54
Tom was and why he hadn't called to let
00:29:57
me know where he might
00:30:01
be there's a lot of different
00:30:03
circumstances for different types of
00:30:04
missing persons they could take off
00:30:06
because of family problems they could
00:30:08
take off because of money problems we
00:30:11
really don't know the reason until we
00:30:12
get into talking with the family or
00:30:14
friends you see a lot of people going in
00:30:16
and out of that house neighbors were
00:30:18
questioned but no one had seen Tom that
00:30:21
morning police didn't know whether Tom
00:30:23
had left on his own or if he was a
00:30:25
victim of Foul
00:30:26
Play Barbara posted these flyers at his
00:30:30
usual hangout but no one came forward
00:30:32
with any
00:30:34
information Tom Ros was officially
00:30:36
listed as a missing
00:30:39
person days passed with no word and then
00:30:42
a letter arrived it was addressed to the
00:30:45
family of Tom
00:30:48
Ro it contained Tom's driver's license
00:30:51
and the earring he had been wearing the
00:30:53
day he disappeared
00:30:59
the letter also contained this bizarre
00:31:02
confession you don't know me and
00:31:05
hopefully never will but I am the one
00:31:07
who killed Tom Ro the closing words I'm
00:31:10
very sorry for what I have done and I
00:31:12
know in time that the guilt will leave
00:31:14
me so will your
00:31:17
pain was this chilling letter a hoax
00:31:21
Tom's Family couldn't think of a single
00:31:23
person who would want him harmed and
00:31:25
they simply could not believe that he
00:31:27
was dead the investigation
00:31:31
continued authorities once again went
00:31:33
back to the day he
00:31:37
disappeared on that day Tom made two
00:31:40
deposits at his bank at approximately
00:31:42
8:20 a.m. but he did not withdraw any
00:31:45
money indicating he had no plans to
00:31:48
leave
00:31:50
town Tom was next seen by a neighbor he
00:31:54
was talking with an unidentified white
00:31:56
male at about 9 :30 a.m. if the letter
00:32:00
is not a hoax then police believe that
00:32:02
this man may have been Tom's
00:32:05
killer we contacted Wen witness who told
00:32:08
us that she had seen Thomas that morning
00:32:10
with another subject standing by a
00:32:13
pickup truck looking into the bed of the
00:32:15
pickup truck she said that they were not
00:32:17
arguing it looked like they were just
00:32:19
carrying on a normal conversation and
00:32:21
there was nothing suspicious about that
00:32:23
and I believe that was the last time
00:32:25
Thomas was
00:32:26
seen okay stop for sports however a
00:32:29
statement from one eyewitness suggest
00:32:31
that the letter might be a hoax
00:32:34
9.95 an employee at a motorcycle part
00:32:37
store was convinced Tom came in one day
00:32:40
after his family received the letter
00:32:43
saying that Tom was
00:32:45
killed he acted a little strange in the
00:32:49
sense that he didn't joke around with me
00:32:52
we would always joke around about what
00:32:54
kind of motorcycle he rode and about it
00:32:56
leaking oil and stuff you know Al so I
00:32:58
mean I knew Tom well enough to know sday
00:33:01
that it was Tom that came
00:33:03
in authorities believe Annie Marcel did
00:33:07
see Tom Ro but suspect that he is
00:33:09
mistaken about the
00:33:12
date with no new leads the case became
00:33:19
inactive pler County 500 M north of
00:33:23
Burbank authorities were called to
00:33:25
investigate weathered bone fragments and
00:33:27
personal effects that were found on a
00:33:29
remote
00:33:31
Hillside motorcycle emblems on the
00:33:33
clothing link the items to Tom
00:33:38
Ro a duffel bag flashlight hunting knife
00:33:44
two pairs of prescription eyeglasses an
00:33:47
empty prescription medicine bottle and
00:33:50
several
00:33:52
shirts Tom seemed to have been packed
00:33:55
and ready for the road Barbara Rando
00:33:58
recognized all the shirts and a pair of
00:34:01
eyeglasses as
00:34:03
Tom's I do feel that what they found is
00:34:07
Tom but there's that hope that he is
00:34:11
still out there somewhere and then in
00:34:13
fact I will find
00:34:17
him
00:34:19
update DNA tests have confirmed that the
00:34:22
remains found in pler County are those
00:34:24
of Tom Ro and that he died of a gunshot
00:34:27
one
00:34:28
the exact circumstances of his death as
00:34:31
well as the identity of the letter
00:34:32
writer are still a mystery Burbank
00:34:36
Police cannot reveal additional
00:34:39
details however they continue to work on

Sunday night they said their goodbyes
00:35:42
they told Barbara they would be leaving
00:35:44
early the next day oh we're getting I
00:35:49
got up the next
00:35:50
morning and I thought I heard them
00:35:53
up I didn't know whether they were or
00:35:56
not so I didn't

would have been

00:38:55
more than $3 million from local banks
00:38:58
and businesses the Wells Fargo vaults
