00:00:04
SAM DOUGLAS: In the United States of America,
00:00:07
there are a select few prisoners whose names
00:00:10
strike fear in the hearts of even the world's
00:00:13
hardest and most depraved criminals.
00:00:17
One of the very worst is inmate Casey Pigge.
00:00:21
TERRY STEELE: Casey Pigge, by far,
00:00:23
is the most evil prisoner that I've
00:00:25
ever encountered in over 22 years of incarceration.
00:00:30
- Pigge is an animal.
00:00:32
- Casey Pigge is the most dangerous person
00:00:35
that I've ever prosecuted.
00:00:37
- Look at the history of carnage and wrath
00:00:40
that he's left in his wake.
00:00:42
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge savagely murdered
00:00:44
his ex-girlfriend's mother and left her corpse to burn.
00:00:47
- Can you imagine killing somebody with a box cutter?
00:00:51
- My mom's not here.
00:00:53
Well, you don't deserve to be here either.
00:00:55
LINA HAJI: He was a serial killer,
00:00:57
and he was never going to stop.
00:01:00
SAM DOUGLAS: Even behind bars, Pigge's lust for killing
00:01:03
knew no bounds.
00:01:04
- I've never seen someone take their time
00:01:07
and torture someone for fun.
00:01:11
HECTOR BRAVO: Casey actually murdered
00:01:13
a civilian, fellow inmate, and attempted to murder
00:01:17
a correctional officer.
00:01:19
Everybody who comes in contact with Casey Pigge is in danger.
00:01:24
- Casey Pigge is our Hannibal Lecter.
00:01:27
[theme music]
00:01:53
SAM DOUGLAS: The US State of Ohio is home to over 45,000
00:01:57
incarcerated felons, with over 1,000 of the most murderous
00:02:02
being housed in Southern Ohio Correctional Facility,
00:02:06
a level 4 maximum security penitentiary.
00:02:10
- Only your most violent offenders
00:02:12
end up in this prison.
00:02:14
It's the prisoners who assaulted the staff.
00:02:17
They assault, if not kill, other inmates.
00:02:21
There's just really nothing left to do with them.
00:02:24
Essentially, you've tried everything else.
00:02:26
TERRY STEELE: The inmates there have
00:02:28
no contact with each other.
00:02:29
It's a 24-hour lockdown facility.
00:02:33
- It's complete separation and complete isolation.
00:02:38
- It's about as tough as you can get in Ohio.
00:02:48
SAM DOUGLAS: One of the most violent and sadistic
00:02:51
criminals this prison has ever seen
00:02:54
is 37-year-old Casey Pigge.
00:02:58
TERRY STEELE: The best way to describe Casey Pigge
00:03:00
would be being like the Joker.
00:03:03
It's the only kind of character that
00:03:04
would describe the kind of crazy
00:03:06
that I seen on Casey Pigge.
00:03:09
PAUL LOPEZ: The only reason that he has not
00:03:12
been put to death is because he understands the system
00:03:15
well enough to manipulate it.
00:03:18
TERRY STEELE: I have been locked up
00:03:20
with some notorious criminals.
00:03:22
I was in a pod with Whitey Bulger.
00:03:24
I was in a pod with the Somali pirate from
00:03:28
the "Captain Phillips" movie.
00:03:30
And none of these guys was I ever scared of them.
00:03:34
I'm scared of Casey Pigge.
00:03:37
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge has an unquenchable lust for killing.
00:03:41
- He's been able to kill people while he's in custody.
00:03:46
This is a guy that's committed to murder as many times
00:03:51
as he can.
00:04:00
SAM DOUGLAS: Casey Pigge was born in January 1988.
00:04:03
He was raised in the small city of Chillicothe, Ohio.
00:04:07
JONA ISON: Chillicothe was the original capital of Ohio.
00:04:11
Population's in the 20,000s.
00:04:14
A lot of blue-collar workers, factory work.
00:04:16
Everybody kind of knows everybody
00:04:19
in some way or another.
00:04:23
PAUL LOPEZ: Casey Pigge was born
00:04:26
to a 14-year-old young lady.
00:04:29
She did drugs and drank quite a bit during the pregnancy.
00:04:32
- If she used and drank while he was in utero,
00:04:37
there could have been implications
00:04:38
on brain development, intellectual disability,
00:04:42
potentially health concerns, all sorts
00:04:45
of psychiatric disorders.
00:04:48
SAM DOUGLAS: Casey's childhood was extremely
00:04:51
unstable and traumatic.
00:04:53
JONA ISON: He encountered a lot of abuse.
00:04:57
His aunt recalled that at one time
00:05:00
she had witnessed his mother push him from a moving car.
00:05:04
He was often locked in his room alone,
00:05:08
had food slid to him under the door,
00:05:11
and would urinate into a heat register.
00:05:17
- That kind of isolation is really not
00:05:20
good for anyone, particularly a child,
00:05:22
while their brain is developing.
00:05:43
LINA HAJI: There is one theory called the McDonald's triad.
00:05:47
It talks about three red flags when
00:05:49
it comes to developing psychopathy as an adult,
00:05:52
and those three red flags are bedwetting,
00:05:54
arson or fire setting, and cruelty to animals.
00:05:58
So red flag.
00:06:01
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge's behavior spiraled out of control.
00:06:04
Eventually, he was taken away from his grandma
00:06:07
and placed into foster care.
00:06:09
JONA ISON: He had been in 100 different foster care homes.
00:06:13
One of his foster care fathers testified
00:06:16
that Casey was the most needy child he had ever encountered,
00:06:22
and that nothing could make Casey happy.
00:06:27
- He was severely neglected.
00:06:29
He didn't go to school.
00:06:30
He didn't have his proper needs met.
00:06:32
He was essentially homeless.
00:06:33
He was abandoned.
00:06:35
Nobody wanted him.
00:06:38
JONA ISON: I don't know that there's another case of child
00:06:41
abuse that I'm aware of in any of the stories
00:06:45
I've covered to the extent of Casey Pigge's.
00:06:49
SAM DOUGLAS: During his teenage years,
00:06:51
Pigge alternated between foster care and living
00:06:55
with his abusive mom.
00:06:58
At 18, he discovered love for the first time in his life when
00:07:03
he met 16-year-old Angelique.
00:07:10
ANGELIQUE: I'm Angelique.
00:07:12
I am the ex-girlfriend of Casey Pigge.
00:07:16
I met Casey when I was 16 years old through a friend of mine.
00:07:22
I thought he was very nice and sweet.
00:07:25
I'd never had a boyfriend do things or treat me
00:07:28
the way that he did--
00:07:31
coming to my work and surprising me
00:07:33
and getting me flowers.
00:07:35
He was just so kind and caring.
00:07:40
I was just drawn to him, like-- you know what I mean?
00:07:42
Like, I wanted to be around him 24/7.
00:07:47
SAM DOUGLAS: But just two weeks into their romance,
00:07:50
Pigge was arrested and sent to jail.
00:07:55
JONA ISON: It was the first time he was ever in prison.
00:08:00
He was charged with receiving stolen property
00:08:03
and breaking and entering for taking a golf cart.
00:08:07
LINA HAJI: Pigge's crime doesn't
00:08:09
seem to have a function other than committing
00:08:12
the crime in and for itself.
00:08:14
It's not like he's stealing food because he's hungry.
00:08:17
It seems to be engaging in the criminal behavior
00:08:20
to engage in the criminal behavior.
00:08:22
It's also very indicative of somebody
00:08:25
who is stimulation-seeking.
00:08:27
People who are high on psychopathy
00:08:30
tend to have a need for stimulation.
00:08:36
SAM DOUGLAS: When Pigge was released
00:08:38
just over five months later, prison
00:08:41
appeared to have changed him.
00:08:45
ANGELIQUE: He just became different.
00:08:47
He started drinking a lot, and that would make him very mean.
00:08:56
I would do just, like, the smallest little things,
00:08:59
and it would just make him, like, super mad.
00:09:03
And I was definitely scared.
00:09:06
SAM DOUGLAS: Fueled by alcohol, Pigge's abusive tendencies
00:09:10
rapidly worsened.
00:09:11
ANGELIQUE: He would accuse me of things
00:09:14
that I obviously didn't do and being just rough with me.
00:09:19
SAM DOUGLAS: Despite Pigge's abusive behavior,
00:09:23
Angelique soon became pregnant.
00:09:25
- It seemed like because I was pregnant,
00:09:28
he was more abusive physically and would make me do drugs.
00:09:40
He made me drink alcohol, like, when I was pregnant.
00:09:45
I would drink so much that I would end up throwing up.
00:09:48
He would still make me drink after that.
00:09:52
I tried leaving a couple of different times.
00:09:54
Each time-- like, it was always the same thing each time.
00:09:57
Like, he would be good at first,
00:09:59
but he always end up doing it again.
00:10:03
- Forcing her to take drugs and alcohol while she's pregnant
00:10:08
add another level of sadism, because he's not just
00:10:12
negatively affecting her, he's also negatively
00:10:14
affecting his child.
00:10:16
His ability to exert control is about also the unborn child.
00:10:24
SAM DOUGLAS: Seven months into her pregnancy, Pigge tried
00:10:27
to strangle his girlfriend.
00:10:29
- I just remember him putting his hands around my throat
00:10:37
and me waking up on the floor.
00:10:43
I didn't know where I was at first.
00:10:45
That was scary.
00:10:48
I went to the cops and made a report about it.
00:10:53
And so he did go to jail, but for 30 days.
00:10:57
That wasn't very long.
00:11:01
SAM DOUGLAS: Casey Pigge lived with Angelique
00:11:05
and her mom, Rhonda Sommers.
00:11:07
ANGELIQUE: Me and my mom were close.
00:11:09
I told her almost everything.
00:11:12
She loved dancing in her room.
00:11:15
I'd catch her singing and dancing to the Backstreet Boys.
00:11:18
She was my rock and my best friend.
00:11:22
She allowed Casey to stay with us.
00:11:27
She would give him words of encouragement,
00:11:30
kind of like a mother figure.
00:11:32
- This is her daughter, and her daughter
00:11:34
is pregnant with his child.
00:11:36
So there must have been a sense of hope
00:11:39
that he would see that there's potential for a nurturing and
00:11:43
caring family that maybe he could change,
00:11:46
maybe he could be a better human being.
00:11:48
SAM DOUGLAS: In February 2008, Angelique and Pigge's baby
00:11:53
was born.
00:11:54
They moved into their own place just
00:11:56
a few doors down from Rhonda.
00:11:58
Angelique was feeling hopeful.
00:12:01
- He was doing things to show me that he had changed,
00:12:05
and he bought our daughter a crib.
00:12:09
He was working with his uncle, and he seemed like he
00:12:11
was doing good for himself.
00:12:14
SAM DOUGLAS: But just like before, Pigge's good behavior
00:12:18
didn't last long.
00:12:20
ANGELIQUE: He was wanting to steal my mom's car,
00:12:22
and he said something about knocking her out to steal it.
00:12:26
And I was like, no, don't touch my mom.
00:12:30
Leave my mom alone.
00:12:33
Every time I told my mom the crazy things
00:12:36
he was saying and wanting to do,
00:12:39
she just reassured me, like, don't worry.
00:12:41
It's going to be OK.
00:12:42
He's not going to do that.
00:12:45
- It adds a layer of complexity when you realize that he wants
00:12:50
Angelique to commit crimes.
00:12:52
The reason for that is because that
00:12:54
would have him exert even more control over Angelique,
00:12:58
because he would be almost the only one with this knowledge.
00:13:02
It would have them kind of in a Bonnie and
00:13:05
Clyde situation, where if I'm guilty, you're guilty as well.
00:13:09
SAM DOUGLAS: In September 2008, Angelique left their six and
00:13:13
a half month old baby alone with Pigge while she went
00:13:16
a few doors down to collect some bedding
00:13:19
from her 52-year-old mom.
00:13:21
- I think I was gone maybe at the most 10 minutes.
00:13:26
When I came back, our daughter was on the floor crying.
00:13:30
So I go over to pick her up, and
00:13:32
I noticed she had some blood speckles or spots on her nose
00:13:39
and had a bruise.
00:13:41
She wouldn't drink her milk.
00:13:42
She would try to, but she couldn't
00:13:43
because she couldn't breathe.
00:13:45
That freaked me out.
00:13:46
And I asked him, like, what happened?
00:13:48
What did you do?
00:13:49
And he said, nothing, nothing.
00:13:52
That's when I was like, I'm done.
00:13:57
- Pigge was abused, was neglected,
00:14:00
was deprived of a lot of things,
00:14:02
had a really unstable home life,
00:14:05
and then started engaging in criminal activity
00:14:08
at a very young age.
00:14:10
You put all of that together, and
00:14:12
it would not be a far stretch to believe
00:14:16
that he was hurting his child.
00:14:17
SAM DOUGLAS: Angelique rushed her six and a half month
00:14:20
old daughter to the hospital.
00:14:22
She was checked over and given the all-clear,
00:14:25
but kept in for observation as a precaution.
00:14:32
The following day, in need of a change of clothes but fearful
00:14:35
of running into Pigge, Angelique asked her mom
00:14:38
to bring some from the family home while she
00:14:41
took a shower at her aunt's.
00:14:43
ANGELIQUE: If I could just go to my aunt's house
00:14:45
and take a shower and then my mom
00:14:48
just bring me clean clothes.
00:14:50
You know what I mean.
00:14:51
I was like, can you please hurry?
00:14:52
Because I want to get back to the hospital
00:14:53
to be with my daughter.
00:14:56
Said she didn't mind, and I was like, Mom, please be careful.
00:15:00
[phone line ringing]
00:15:02
SAM DOUGLAS: Rhonda was taking an unusually long time,
00:15:07
so Angelique tried calling her.
00:15:10
- It just kept ringing and ringing
00:15:11
and ringing and ringing, and then she wouldn't answer.
00:15:13
So I'm like, OK, she's on her way then.
00:15:15
SAM DOUGLAS: Meanwhile, a call had
00:15:18
come in to the emergency services in Chillicothe
00:15:21
reporting an apartment building on fire.
00:15:24
Reporter Jona Ison arrived on the scene.
00:15:27
JONA ISON: I remember being in the parking lot out here
00:15:30
and watching as firefighters went in.
00:15:32
There was neighbors, of course, out and
00:15:35
about, standing and watching.
00:15:37
[phone rings]
00:15:38
SAM DOUGLAS: Angelique's phone began to ring.
00:15:41
ANGELIQUE: The next thing I know,
00:15:43
my brother is calling me and telling me
00:15:45
that my apartment is on fire and they
00:15:48
don't know where my mom is.
00:15:51
I ran.
00:15:53
I ran non-stop.
00:15:55
I didn't stop to take a break to breathe.
00:15:59
By the time I got there, they had already put the fire out,
00:16:02
but they couldn't find my mom.
00:16:08
- Coming on scene, of course, firefighters and police
00:16:11
wouldn't have thought much had happened other than a fire.
00:16:16
Upon closer investigation, though, they
00:16:19
discovered Rhonda's body behind a couch inside the living room.
00:16:27
Her throat had been cut several times.
00:16:30
She had been murdered.
00:16:34
ANGELIQUE: They came in and told us they found her body.
00:16:37
I just kept telling myself, this can't be real.
00:16:41
I immediately knew.
00:16:43
I just knew it had to have been him.
00:16:45
SAM DOUGLAS: Angelique informed the police
00:16:47
that her ex-boyfriend, Casey Pigge, was likely involved.
00:16:52
They found him around six hours later.
00:16:54
- He just asked some random person for a ride,
00:16:58
and they took him to his cousin's house.
00:17:01
- He had a spot of blood on his shorts and a box cutter on him.
00:17:08
That blood on his shorts was a mixture
00:17:11
of Casey's and Rhonda's.
00:17:13
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge was immediately arrested
00:17:16
and taken to Ross County Jail.
00:17:18
An autopsy on Rhonda's body showed that she had been
00:17:21
killed with the box cutter.
00:17:28
JONA ISON: Casey had cut Rhonda's throat at least five
00:17:32
times and killed her, put her body behind the couch,
00:17:37
and then set the apartment on fire.
00:17:41
- This is something you do up close,
00:17:44
and it really indicates a suspect
00:17:48
attempting to exert control or power over their victim.
00:17:53
When you have multiple wounds like
00:17:54
that as well, not two, not three, but five,
00:17:58
that typically is consistent with somebody
00:18:00
who has absolute rage inside towards their victim.
00:18:03
- He had a history of fire setting,
00:18:06
so this was something he was used to.
00:18:08
This was something that he enjoyed.
00:18:09
This was something that fulfilled some need in him.
00:18:12
Of course, there was the utility of potentially
00:18:15
covering up evidence.
00:18:21
- When we discovered from the police
00:18:24
later that this, in fact, had been
00:18:26
a murder that was then covered up by a fire,
00:18:29
it was quite a surprise.
00:18:32
Chillicothe is a pretty small town.
00:18:34
The community is always kind of taken
00:18:37
aback when someone is murdered, because it
00:18:41
doesn't happen that often.
00:18:46
ANGELIQUE: I wanted to kill him.
00:18:49
I wanted to do to him what he did to my mom.
00:18:52
Not only did I lose my mom, but I lost my home.
00:18:57
My mom was a good person, so sweet and
00:19:00
kind and caring and giving.
00:19:03
And I blame myself.
00:19:06
If I would have been home, then maybe she'd still be alive.
00:19:15
SAM DOUGLAS: Investigators spoke
00:19:17
with Pigge, who revealed his motive for the murder
00:19:20
of his ex-girlfriend's mom.
00:19:22
- Casey had felt that Rhonda was preventing
00:19:26
him from having a happy life with Angelique
00:19:30
and their daughter.
00:19:32
His plan was to murder Rhonda, and then they could
00:19:36
be a happy family together.
00:19:38
And his thought process was that they could go off to Texas
00:19:43
where his mother was living, and
00:19:45
then they could kill his mom.
00:19:49
LINA HAJI: I believe that he saw Rhonda
00:19:52
as a potential threat to his relationship,
00:19:55
to his ability to control, to his abuse, to his sadism.
00:20:00
He wanted to engage in evil, and Rhonda
00:20:03
was just the perfect victim.
00:20:05
SAM DOUGLAS: Three days later, 21-year-old Casey
00:20:08
Pigge was charged with aggravated
00:20:10
murder and aggravated arson.
00:20:13
- There were circumstances which
00:20:15
would have made him eligible for the death
00:20:17
penalty in the state of Ohio.
00:20:19
However, somebody who is possibly going to receive
00:20:24
or could receive the death penalty has to take an IQ test.
00:20:27
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: There are many federal judges
00:20:29
that are unwilling.
00:20:31
To impose the death penalty against a defendant who
00:20:33
has an IQ below 70, and Casey Pigge was
00:20:37
2 to 3 points lower than that.
00:20:39
ANGELIQUE: It's so easy for anybody to fake their IQ test.
00:20:43
And he's already faked so many other times,
00:20:47
like to get Social Security and to get things that he wants.
00:20:51
SAM DOUGLAS: The prosecution instead pursued a sentence
00:20:54
of life without parole.
00:21:00
After pleading guilty, Pigge's sentencing hearing
00:21:03
began just over a year later, in November 2009.
00:21:07
- In court, he was just sitting there facing,
00:21:11
you know, straight.
00:21:15
I don't think he seemed remorseful at all.
00:21:18
I just had nothing but hate, nothing
00:21:22
but pure hatred for him.
00:21:24
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge's attorney's line of defense
00:21:26
focused on his childhood.
00:21:28
JONA ISON: The sentencing hearing was very disturbing,
00:21:31
hearing all the things that Casey
00:21:33
had been through growing up.
00:21:53
JONA ISON: The judge said that it
00:21:55
was the most egregious case of child abuse
00:21:59
he had heard in his 16 years as a judge.
00:22:04
That doesn't mean that you can just murder somebody.
00:22:08
SAM DOUGLAS: After a four-hour hearing.
00:22:11
Casey was sentenced to 41 years in prison.
00:22:21
He was sent to Lebanon Correctional Facility in Ohio.
00:22:25
- Lebanon Correctional institution is an old-school,
00:22:29
1960s, traditional prison.
00:22:33
It is what you would envision as a typical prison
00:22:38
that you might see depicted in TVs or in movies.
00:22:43
It holds some of the most dangerous prisoners
00:22:46
that we have in the state, people
00:22:49
that have committed murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping.
00:22:54
SAM DOUGLAS: Once inside, Pigge quickly gained a reputation
00:22:58
as a frequent troublemaker.
00:23:00
- The first three years he was in prison, there
00:23:04
were multiple instances of him getting into trouble.
00:23:08
He had gotten into some fights.
00:23:10
He had some contraband, some razor blades,
00:23:14
maybe some homemade alcohol.
00:23:16
SAM DOUGLAS: This behavior continued
00:23:18
for the next three years.
00:23:20
Eventually, he was sent to segregation.
00:23:28
JONA ISON: The segregation cells at Lebanon
00:23:30
were made of cinder blocks and had a couple of bunks in them.
00:23:34
There are just too many inmates to be
00:23:38
able to house very many in segregation alone,
00:23:42
so usually segregation cells have two people in them.
00:23:47
SAM DOUGLAS: After a month alone, Pigge was
00:23:50
given a cellmate, Luther Wade.
00:23:54
JONA ISON: Luther Wade was 26 years
00:23:56
old and serving a 10 year sentence
00:23:58
for aggravated burglary.
00:24:00
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: There was a fairly sizable hole
00:24:05
in the wall of Casey Pigge and Luther Wade's cell that
00:24:10
led into an adjacent cell.
00:24:14
The cinder block had been pulled out
00:24:16
of the wall that actually allowed Casey Pigge to travel
00:24:20
back and forth to play cards with the inmates that
00:24:22
were in the adjacent cell.
00:24:24
The hole in the wall where the cinder block was missing
00:24:28
was covered by a scrapbook of magazine pages
00:24:32
that Casey Pigge had pulled out.
00:24:38
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge and Wade were cellmates
00:24:40
for just a single day.
00:24:45
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: Casey Pigge told Luther Wade
00:24:47
that he wanted to show him some type
00:24:50
of a card game magic trick.
00:24:54
He wanted him to be blindfolded with a sheet
00:24:58
that they had in the cell, and that he should count to 15.
00:25:06
Luther Wade began to count, and once he got to the number five,
00:25:11
Casey Pigge retrieved the cinder block which
00:25:15
had been underneath the bed.
00:25:21
And he began to smash Luther Wade in the side of the head.
00:25:24
PAUL LOPEZ: This went on for several minutes,
00:25:26
and Pigge would actually pause in between segments
00:25:31
of the assault to look for signs of life.
00:25:35
If he felt that Luther was still alive,
00:25:39
he just continued beating him with the cinder
00:25:40
block in the head.
00:25:44
After he was convinced Luther was gone,
00:25:48
he placed his body in the lower bunk of the cell.
00:25:55
JONA ISON: There was a correctional officer
00:25:56
who was doing rounds when Casey hollered out to him
00:25:59
and said he had killed his cellmate.
00:26:03
At first, the corrections officer didn't believe him,
00:26:06
but then looked in and saw a pool of blood
00:26:09
under Luther Wade's bed.
00:26:12
LINA HAJI: To murder this person
00:26:14
by pretending we're going to do a magic trick
00:26:16
and then kill you with a cinder block, that takes a lot
00:26:19
of planning and calculation.
00:26:21
So it makes you wonder how somebody with a low IQ
00:26:27
was that criminally savvy.
00:26:32
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge was secured and
00:26:34
immediately taken to an interview room
00:26:36
to be questioned.
00:26:38
Luther Wade was rushed to the hospital,
00:26:41
where he was pronounced dead.
00:26:46
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: I was the county prosecutor
00:26:48
responsible for investigating and prosecuting the murder
00:26:52
of Mr. Wade by Casey Pigge.
00:26:55
Prison officials escorted us to the cell.
00:27:00
As I looked in, the two things that quickly stood out to me
00:27:05
were the blood all over the cell as well as this large hole
00:27:13
in the wall.
00:27:18
I had never seen this level of brutality
00:27:22
in one of our prison murders.
00:27:24
The only type of person that can do that
00:27:26
is somebody that has zero regard for human life.
00:27:37
The best evidence that we have of why Casey Pigge
00:27:41
wanted to murder Luther Wade was the statement that he gave
00:27:46
to the prison investigator right afterwards,
00:27:49
which is, how many people do you
00:27:51
have to kill to be considered to be a serial killer?
00:27:56
And the hair on the back of my neck
00:27:58
stood up because that told me that this was intentional,
00:28:05
this was done with prior calculation and design.
00:28:08
Casey Pigge is our Hannibal Lecter.
00:28:19
SAM DOUGLAS: On January 30, 2017,
00:28:22
29-year-old Casey Pigge pled guilty to the aggravated
00:28:26
murder of Luther Wade.
00:28:28
Although the murder qualified as a death penalty case,
00:28:31
Pigge's low IQ made him exempt for a second time.
00:28:38
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: We made the decision reluctantly
00:28:41
to go ahead and agree to a plea agreement
00:28:44
whereby he would agree to plead guilty to
00:28:48
the aggravated murder, we would dismiss the death penalty
00:28:51
specifications, and he would be sentenced to a term of life
00:28:54
without parole.
00:29:02
SAM DOUGLAS: Just two days after his plea hearing,
00:29:05
Pigge was being transported back to prison
00:29:07
from court when his insatiable lust for killing
00:29:11
overcame him once again.
00:29:17
TERRY STEELE: My name is Terry Steele.
00:29:20
I had been incarcerated for a drugstore robbery.
00:29:23
My day started at North Central Correctional Facility,
00:29:28
and it was a really cold morning.
00:29:30
We loaded up about 5:30 in the morning, and we went
00:29:33
to Franklin Medical Center.
00:29:37
Franklin Medical Center is the hub where they transport all
00:29:41
the prisoners from the state.
00:29:43
SAM DOUGLAS: Terry was being transferred
00:29:45
to another prison because of a disciplinary violation.
00:29:49
Whilst at the medical center, he was loaded onto a prison bus
00:29:53
with Casey Pigge, someone he'd never come across until now.
00:29:58
TERRY STEELE: I think there was about
00:29:59
12 or 13 people on that bus that day
00:30:01
until the bus was full.
00:30:05
They loaded us all in a quick manner up on the bus,
00:30:08
putting level 1, 2, 3, and 4 inmates all
00:30:11
together in a manner that they'd never do typically.
00:30:15
It was obvious that they were in a hurry
00:30:18
to get back because we were probably two hours
00:30:20
late leaving the hub that day.
00:30:25
JONA ISON: The inmates were not told where
00:30:27
to sit on the transport bus.
00:30:30
They just got to sit wherever.
00:30:32
Casey, he was the highest security risk,
00:30:36
and he was seated the furthest away
00:30:41
from the correction officers.
00:30:43
SAM DOUGLAS: Terry has returned to the road the bus
00:30:45
was driving along that day.
00:30:57
TERRY STEELE: I was loaded in about four seats
00:31:00
from the back of the bus, and Pigge was
00:31:04
located right across from me.
00:31:12
PAUL LOPEZ: He loosened his belly chain,
00:31:14
was able to step out of his handcuffs,
00:31:16
and now his hands are in front of him
00:31:18
and they're no longer secured to his waist.
00:31:21
What he ended up having is a ligature, a steel ligature.
00:31:26
Now, the waist chain now is in a loop attached to the center
00:31:30
chain of his handcuffs.
00:31:32
TERRY STEELE: From the second he took those chains off,
00:31:35
the atmosphere was electric because everybody on the bus
00:31:38
was aware something was about to happen.
00:31:41
SAM DOUGLAS: A few rows in front of Pigge
00:31:44
was 61-year-old David Johnson.
00:31:46
He was serving an eight-year sentence for sexual battery.
00:32:05
TERRY STEELE: He would let him get a breath
00:32:07
and then just put more pressure on.
00:32:09
It was like he was torturing him.
00:32:11
He wasn't just trying to hurry up and kill him.
00:32:13
He deliberately took his time.
00:32:17
I've never seen the look of glee
00:32:20
like he had on his face that day.
00:32:23
It looked like a look of ecstasy,
00:32:25
like he was having sex.
00:32:28
This is the evilest person I've ever seen.
00:32:31
- He's starting to realize that this is something
00:32:34
that he enjoys, that he takes pleasure in,
00:32:37
that he takes sexual pleasure in.
00:32:39
Not only is it escalating, it's likely
00:32:41
that it's not going to stop.
00:32:43
- The guards never heard a sound
00:32:46
because it was reported by the inmates
00:32:48
that they had the radio in the bus on,
00:32:51
listening to music at a very high volume.
00:32:57
TERRY STEELE: Eventually, 15 minutes in, he
00:33:00
took his hands, held his hands over his nose and his mouth
00:33:07
until he was dead.
00:33:24
LINA HAJI: It's a cold, badly humored joke in his eyes.
00:33:30
It's a very detached statement from the fact
00:33:32
that he just took somebody's life.
00:33:34
He's, in a way, sending a message to the other inmates.
00:33:37
This is who I am.
00:33:38
This is what I'm capable of.
00:33:40
Don't mess with me because I don't have remorse,
00:33:41
and I'll do it again.
00:33:43
TERRY STEELE: He put him back in his seat and set him up.
00:33:47
He told everybody just to say you were asleep.
00:33:50
And from that point forward, nothing else was said.
00:33:54
SAM DOUGLAS: The murder went unnoticed by prison
00:33:57
transport officers as the bus continued on its journey.
00:34:01
TERRY STEELE: I assumed there was a reason he
00:34:04
was doing what he was doing.
00:34:05
I didn't find out until we got to the hub
00:34:08
that he didn't know the man, that he had no reason, that he
00:34:12
did this just for enjoyment.
00:34:15
JONA ISON: When the bus arrived at Ross Correctional
00:34:20
Institution, the officers on the bus discovered 61-year-old
00:34:25
David Johnson dead.
00:34:28
SAM DOUGLAS: Terry informed a correctional officer that it
00:34:31
was Pigge who killed Johnson.
00:34:34
TERRY STEELE: I've seen many acts of violence in prison.
00:34:37
I've never seen evil of that magnitude.
00:34:40
I never seen somebody kill somebody just
00:34:43
for the joy of killing them.
00:34:49
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: Even after having
00:34:51
pled guilty to Luther Wade's murder,
00:34:54
knowing that he was about ready to be sentenced
00:34:57
to life without parole for that murder,
00:34:59
he is able to carry out yet another murder
00:35:03
while incarcerated.
00:35:06
It just made me sick to my stomach.
00:35:09
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge was placed into ad
00:35:11
seg, or solitary confinement, this time completely alone.
00:35:18
Now with a third brutal murder to his name,
00:35:21
when he appeared in court for killing his cellmate,
00:35:24
the security was unprecedented.
00:35:27
- I've never seen that level of a showing of force,
00:35:32
that level of a showing of manpower
00:35:35
in the immediate proximity to a defendant ever before.
00:35:40
Casey Pigge was sentenced to life
00:35:42
without the possibility of parole
00:35:44
for the murder of Luther Wade.
00:35:47
SAM DOUGLAS: Eight months later, Pigge
00:35:49
was sentenced for the bus murder of David Johnson
00:35:52
following a guilty plea.
00:35:54
Again, security was tight.
00:35:56
- The prosecutor was concerned he would kill again,
00:36:00
so she had requested that he be brought in by a SWAT team.
00:36:05
He was smiling, laughing, very much seemed to be
00:36:09
enjoying all this attention.
00:36:12
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge was given another 25
00:36:15
years to serve on top of his existing sentences.
00:36:19
- Adding 25 years to somebody who's already
00:36:22
going to die in prison with a life sentence is
00:36:24
completely inconsequential, so you even
00:36:26
wonder, what is the point?
00:36:27
Why does the Justice system go through with it?
00:36:29
Maybe it's to get justice for the victims.
00:36:31
You know, that's very important,
00:36:33
but it's inconsequential to Pigge.
00:36:43
SAM DOUGLAS: Casey Pigge was to carry out
00:36:45
his sentence at Southern Ohio Correctional Institute
00:36:48
in Lucasville.
00:36:50
He was placed into permanent administrative segregation.
00:36:53
But even that would not be enough to stop this killer.
00:36:57
- At this point, he cannot be in general population
00:37:02
because he's displayed, time and time again,
00:37:06
that he's a murderer.
00:37:07
He's now a serial killer.
00:37:11
- There was a letter that he had written another inmate that
00:37:15
indicated he was going to catch him another one,
00:37:19
you'll see, and signed the letter, "Love, Boxcutter."
00:37:31
SAM DOUGLAS: On February 20, 2018, Pigge, now age 30,
00:37:35
requested to see a nurse on the same day
00:37:38
as another inmate called Greg Reinke.
00:37:44
- Greg Reinke was in prison for life on an aggravated
00:37:48
murder charge.
00:37:49
He had a prior history of attacks in prison.
00:37:55
HECTOR BRAVO: Any inmate could ask to go to the nurse.
00:37:58
They usually fill out a slip, and once the nurse receives it,
00:38:02
it'll be a scheduled appointment, kind
00:38:03
of like out in the streets.
00:38:05
SAM DOUGLAS: Correctional Officer Matthew Mathias
00:38:07
accompanied both Pigge and Reinke
00:38:10
to the infirmary that day.
00:38:12
- The officer first escorted Mr. Reinke into the infirmary
00:38:16
and then shut the door.
00:38:18
He left Mr. Pigge in the hallway.
00:38:22
After approximately four minutes,
00:38:24
Mr. Reinke is finished with the nurse,
00:38:26
and him and Officer Mathias are walking back
00:38:28
towards the infirmary door, likely so he
00:38:32
could swap Reinke with Pigge.
00:38:34
At this point, you see Mr. Pigge take the handcuffs,
00:38:39
lower them underneath his body, step out
00:38:42
of them so now he has his hands for use
00:38:45
in the front of his body.
00:38:49
- Matthew Mathias went to open the door.
00:38:52
Casey rushed the door and slammed Matthew Matthias,
00:38:58
pinning him behind the door against the wall.
00:39:02
And in less than a minute, Casey and Greg Reinke
00:39:06
stabbed Matthew Matthias over 30 times with two shanks.
00:39:14
HECTOR BRAVO: He was able to make two shanks out
00:39:17
of the metal in his cell bunk and
00:39:19
ultimately carried out his attack on officer Matthias.
00:39:26
JONA ISON: So the nurse hit the red alert button,
00:39:29
which notified others at the prison
00:39:32
that there was a serious incident happening.
00:39:38
About 20 correction officers rushed to that mini-infirmary
00:39:44
and latched on to Casey Pigge and Greg Reinke
00:39:49
and broke it up.
00:39:54
HECTOR BRAVO: It brings back memories of incidents
00:39:56
that I have been involved in where inmates did
00:39:59
stab correctional officers.
00:40:01
It's a horrible scene, often filled
00:40:05
with blood, loud noises, the alarm
00:40:08
blaring, the smell of pepper spray
00:40:11
in the air, people screaming.
00:40:14
SAM DOUGLAS: Matthew Mathias was
00:40:16
rushed to the hospital via helicopter, where
00:40:18
he was treated for multiple stab wounds,
00:40:21
including internal bleeding.
00:40:23
Miraculously, he survived the attack.
00:40:27
Pigge was immediately secured and questioned.
00:40:32
- He said that the officer had broke his CD player
00:40:36
and was talking smack to him on a whole other level.
00:40:39
He also stated that you can only push a dog to its limits,
00:40:43
and that is the reason that he chose to assault
00:40:48
the officer, per his words.
00:40:50
Violence should always be the last option, and in this case,
00:40:54
it was the first option.
00:40:59
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge was transferred
00:41:00
to Ohio State Penitentiary, the state's only supermax prison.
00:41:05
- I think he's absolutely committed to doing as much harm
00:41:09
to people as he possibly can, and
00:41:11
he won't be stopped unless he is completely isolated.
00:41:16
There is nothing that you can do from a security standpoint
00:41:20
and have him around other inmates at any point in time,
00:41:24
or else he's going to try to kill them.
00:41:26
SAM DOUGLAS: Pigge's sentencing for the attack
00:41:28
on Matthew Matthias took place on April 17, 2019.
00:41:33
JONA ISON: Casey Pigge pleaded guilty in court
00:41:35
and tried to allege that there are two sides to every coin,
00:41:38
and that he tried to claim that he previously had been
00:41:43
egged on to attack inmates.
00:41:47
Officials looked into that and said that there
00:41:50
was no evidence of that.
00:41:53
SAM DOUGLAS: Avoiding execution yet again,
00:41:56
Pigge was sentenced to 32 years.
00:42:02
DAVID P. FORNSHELL: I was angry on so many levels
00:42:05
and for so many different reasons,
00:42:08
because from my perspective, Casey Pigge should have been
00:42:13
strapped down and executed.
00:42:19
TERRY STEELE: Pigge's actions that
00:42:21
day changed my life forever.
00:42:23
It changed the way I looked at the world.
00:42:27
I never knew that somebody could be that evil.
00:42:32
- My mom, she was my everything,
00:42:35
absolutely everything.
00:42:36
I always imagined her growing older with me
00:42:39
and see my kids grow up.
00:42:42
It's a piece of me missing, and I'm, like, just--
00:42:46
and it's just not right.
00:42:47
Like, I'm just not whole.
00:42:49
- Casey Pigge was able to kill someone in his cell
00:42:55
while incarcerated.
00:42:57
He was able to kill somebody on a bus while incarcerated.
00:43:01
And he was able to almost kill, well, a corrections officer
00:43:05
also while incarcerated.
00:43:08
SAM DOUGLAS: Casey Pigge will remain
00:43:11
incarcerated in isolation for the rest of his life.
00:43:15
- Casey Pigge has a black heart, and he's soulless.
00:43:21
I think he's a weak, cowardly monstrosity that
00:43:26
only kills the defenseless.
00:43:28
We need to put him in a jail cell
00:43:30
so long that time forgets he ever existed.
00:43:35
- His goal is to kill as many people as I possibly can,
00:43:40
so that I can be considered to be one of the world's
00:43:43
best serial killers.
00:43:45
He wants to kill.
00:43:46
He wants a high body count.
00:43:48
He doesn't care what he does to get there.
