00:03:41

00:03:44
Mary on a 6-foot high peasants cape made

for more than 400 years Our Lady of

00:04:03

controversy to skeptics it is a skillful
00:04:08
painting impressive and hardly wondrous
00:04:11
on the other hand the church is
00:04:13
officially recognized the image is a
00:04:15
creation of God a miracle which occurred
00:04:17
in 16th century Mexico when Catholic
00:04:20
missionaries from Spain were attempting
00:04:22
to convert the native Aztec Indians
00:04:28
according to church records there was a
00:04:31
man named juan diego who lived with his
00:04:33
uncle in a village five miles north of
00:04:35
what is now Mexico City Juan was one of
00:04:38
the first Aztecs converted to
00:04:40
Christianity on a December morning in
00:04:43
1531 Juan Diego was on his way to mass

there they would certainly not be

00:08:17

00:08:43

00:08:45
appeared an extraordinary image of the
00:08:47
Virgin Mary the bishop now believed that
00:08:52
a miracle had occurred that Juan Diego
00:08:56
had indeed seen and spoken with his
00:08:58
mother of god after Juan Diego's vision
00:09:03
millions of Indians converted to Roman
00:09:06
Catholicism within just three years in
00:09:14
accordance with the Virgin's wishes this
00:09:17
shrine was soon built on Tepeyac Hill
00:09:19
with the image on prominent display it
00:09:24
was named Our Lady of Guadalupe after a
00:09:26
village in Spain over the centuries the
00:09:30
church allowed painted details to be
00:09:32
added to the portrait including gold
00:09:34
rays a cherub and the green red and
00:09:37
white collars of Mexico since 1976 the
00:09:43
image has been housed in a special
00:09:44
Basilica every years 5 million believers
00:09:48
make pilgrimages
00:09:52
but for as long as it has existed there
00:09:54
has been debate over whether the
00:09:55
portrait is truly a miracle
00:09:59
Jody Smith an associate professor of
00:10:02
philosophy at a Florida College is a
00:10:04
leading authority on the image but Smith
00:10:07
is hardly the first scholar to be
00:10:09
intrigued by Our Lady of Guadalupe as
00:10:11
early as 1666 the church commissioned a
00:10:15
group of physicians and master artists
00:10:17
one salgueiro to inspect the Virgin's
00:10:20
image Massa well concluded that the
00:10:24
painting was indeed on unsigned or
00:10:27
unprepared or on sealed cloth and for
00:10:31
that reason alone others also appearing
00:10:35
but for that reason alone
00:10:37
given that the cloth was made of the
00:10:39
fragile a yacht a cactus fiber it should
00:10:43
have long since disintegrated James
00:10:46
Randi is a professional magician and an
00:10:49
investigator of paranormal phenomena
00:10:51
matter of fact I have a frame with some
00:10:53
of the same kind of cloth in it that
00:10:56
dates back about 450 550 years at least
00:11:01
from Peru different country perhaps a
00:11:04
different cactus the tillable cloth is
00:11:06
very fragile about not what is put in a
00:11:09
frame they can last for the longest time
00:11:13
for the first hundred years the tilma
00:11:15
had been exposed to a high concentration
00:11:17
of saltpeter in the humid air where it
00:11:19
was on display some experts believe this
00:11:23
alone should have caused the images
00:11:25
disintegration that point was
00:11:29
dramatically demonstrated in 1789 when a
00:11:32
sceptical priest ordered eleven artists
00:11:34
to render 11 copies of the painting
00:11:36
using the same kind of unsafe discard in
00:11:40
just seven years all 11 were so peeled
00:11:43
and coated with fungus that they had to
00:11:45
be removed from public display I think
00:11:50
that the fact that the images lasted for
00:11:52
over 400 most 500 years now the fact
00:11:55
that the tumor which is a cactus cactus
00:11:59
plant hasn't rotted and the fact that
00:12:01
the original picture the pigment on the
00:12:03
original picture is still just like it
00:12:05
always was and hasn't cracked is another
00:12:07
totally inexplicable thing in May of
00:12:11
1979 Jody Smith and Phillip Callahan
00:12:14
were given formal permission to examine
00:12:17
the image up close his protective glass
00:12:19
removed
00:12:22
the gold raised around the Virgin added
00:12:25
in the 17th century were badly chipped
00:12:27
at the original image of the face and
00:12:30
body remained remarkably bright and
00:12:33
uncracked naturally enough we examined
00:12:37
the face most intensely and studying
00:12:41
this with the magnifying glass we could
00:12:43
see no hairline cracks whatever the
00:12:46
medium used to color it was it's very
00:12:49
strange because after all of these years
00:12:52
with no evidence of retouching there's
00:12:55
no evidence of age a discount through so
00:13:00
many changes over the years of cars and
00:13:02
so many different representations have
00:13:03
been made of it and for it that is
00:13:06
really hard to tell what happened to the
00:13:07
original or if this is the original you
00:13:09
can't tell there's really so little
00:13:11
evidence available
00:13:14
these infrared photographs reveal
00:13:17
another surprising aspect the lack of an
00:13:19
under sketch an under sketch would
00:13:22
indicate that the image had been painted
00:13:24
by human hands the film photographs the
00:13:28
infrared photograph showed that there is
00:13:30
absolutely no drawing under as
00:13:33
inconceivable that an artist in the
00:13:35
sixteenth century would paint a portrait
00:13:37
without first doing a drawing of it in
00:13:39
fact it's fairly inconceivable Reinier
00:13:40
artist would do it today although you
00:13:41
could do it with some modern art thing
00:13:43
but not with a portrait the practice of
00:13:47
making a rough sketch before proceeding
00:13:49
with a portrait traces back to antiquity
00:13:51
only when completely satisfied with the
00:13:54
under sketch did an artist take up his
00:13:56
paintbrush of course the absence of the
00:14:00
under sketch in itself does not
00:14:03
categorically indicate a miracle but the
00:14:06
paint as beautiful a face and bust as we
00:14:10
see it Our Lady of Guadalupe on a rough
00:14:13
cactus cloth is all the more remarkable
00:14:17
this thing is miraculous because God
00:14:20
willed this to take place among a people
00:14:22
who needed some sort of message it took
00:14:27
place at a time when it was needed and
00:14:30
it took place because God made nature
00:14:32
and God can manipulate nature any way he
00:14:35
wants the essential idea and studying
00:14:39
the image of Guadalupe is that we might
00:14:43
find something alien something
00:14:45
supernatural and that remains an open
00:14:48
possibility but it is by no means the
00:14:50
only possibility
00:14:53
perhaps no amount of scientific research
00:14:55
can unlock the mystery of the image of
00:14:57
Our Lady of Guadalupe for true believers
00:15:01
there is no controversy as they have for
00:15:04
centuries pilgrims have continued to
00:15:06
pray and offer thanks to the image to
00:15:10
them the beautiful face of the Virgin
00:15:11
Mary is purely and simply something of
00:15:15
miraculous wonder
00:15:16

00:15:21
when we return the search for an artist
00:15:24
precious Lost legacy 15 paintings
00:15:27
depicting the final days of Christ in
00:15:41
the Gospel according to John it is
00:15:43
written so then Pilate took Jesus and
00:15:46
scourged him and the soldiers twisted a
00:15:50
crown of thorns and they put it on his
00:15:52
head and he bearing his cross but out to
00:15:58
a place called Golgotha the Bible
00:16:03
movingly recounts the story of the
00:16:05
crucifixion his power is undeniable
00:16:10
these compelling images which illustrate
00:16:13
the story are the life's work of
00:16:15
American artist Ben Stahl there are 15
00:16:20
paintings in all depicting the 14
00:16:22
Stations of the Cross and the
00:16:23
resurrection
00:16:25
sadly the public has not been able to
00:16:27
view these works for nearly 25 years
00:16:30
[Music]
00:16:33
it happened ten days after Easter in
00:16:36
1969 then stalls beloved collection was
00:16:41
stolen stall died in 1987 still mourning
00:16:45
the loss of the works he considered his
00:16:47
masterpieces tonight Ben stars children
00:16:50
hope that they can find their father's
00:16:52
lost paintings in time for Easter they
00:16:54
feel that would be the most fitting and
00:16:56
most moving tribute they could give him
00:17:01
Ben Starr was born in Chicago in 1910
00:17:05
even as a young man he enjoyed a
00:17:08
reputation as a skilled artist for books
00:17:10
and magazines Norman Rockwell once wrote
00:17:14
in the letter to stone the rest of us
00:17:17
are just illustrators but you are among
00:17:19
the Masters in 1954 the Catholic Press
00:17:26
commissioned been stalled to paint the
00:17:28
Stations of the Cross for a special
00:17:30
people edition of the Bible the 14 small
00:17:34
paintings were such a resounding success
00:17:36
the Ben stall decided to duplicate them
00:17:39
on a grander scale
00:17:40
[Music]
00:17:43
and over the years my father would get
00:17:46
letters from people all over the world
00:17:48
wanting to see them and wondering where
00:17:51
they were and so I guess my parents got
00:17:56
together and decided to build a museum
00:17:58
and daddy would paint a new set and
00:18:02
daddy also added the fifteenth painting
00:18:06
which was the resurrection
00:18:08
[Music]
00:18:10
so he spent two years painting these
00:18:12
paintings
00:18:15
there was something very special going
00:18:17
on while he was painting these paintings
00:18:19
because when he did the face of Christ
00:18:21
or the head of Christ who he pulled it
00:18:23
off in 30 40 brushstrokes without ever
00:18:26
having to do it over again and he was
00:18:28
really amazed at that
00:18:31
in November of 1966
00:18:34
Ben stall opened the Museum of the Cross
00:18:36
in Sarasota Florida to house a second
00:18:39
set of paintings
00:18:45
it was almost holy I mean it's just the
00:18:49
atmosphere at the Museum and people
00:18:53
would come out with tears in her eyes
00:18:54
whose it's very moving for a lot of
00:18:57
people but on April 17th 1969 Ben stalls
00:19:03
world came crashing down responding to a
00:19:07
frantic phone call from the museum
00:19:09
director Stahl found the galleries
00:19:11
ransacked all 15 paintings had been
00:19:16
stolen
00:19:16
[Music]
00:19:20
Ben Starr was inconsolable
00:19:23
[Music]
00:19:27
he found it absolutely incredible that
00:19:30
this this kind of thing could happen for
00:19:35
after all who would steal religious
00:19:36
paintings in the first place and such
00:19:39
large paintings where who what could you
00:19:44
do with them you had a lot of trust in
00:19:46
people insurance is very expensive but
00:19:49
he didn't have any there were no burglar
00:19:54
alarms or anything like that because of
00:19:56
this trust so when when the place was
00:19:59
robbed he was in total shock police
00:20:03
discovered that the thieves had entered
00:20:05
the museum in a brazen fashion breaking
00:20:07
through the fire door they were somehow
00:20:09
aware that neither a security guard darn
00:20:12
alarm system was in place
00:20:14
[Music]
00:20:19
instead of cutting the canvases out but
00:20:22
these painstakingly removed each
00:20:24
statement then rolled the paintings up
00:20:26
and made a clean getaway that they had
00:20:30
to be at least three to four people do
00:20:33
this and we felt that they were probably
00:20:36
in there and a minimum of four hours the
00:20:42
investigation seemed to be at a dead end
00:20:44
then six weeks after the theft a man
00:20:47
claiming to be a Catholic priest called
00:20:49
a Sarasota Sheriff's Office he said he
00:20:52
had been approached by the people who
00:20:54
stole the paintings yes what the
00:20:59
paintings paintings yeah you know the
00:21:02
paintings paintings in Sarasota yeah
00:21:05
that's right stay right there for course
00:21:06
we were elated you know this was a break
00:21:10
one point these weeks my investigation
00:21:14
however this lead to me failed to pan
00:21:17
out the priest would not give his name
00:21:19
and eventually he broke off content
00:21:24
what happened to Ben stalls paintings
00:21:28
over the years rumors placed the
00:21:31
collection in the Bahamas or in South
00:21:33
America possibly Brazil the authorities
00:21:37
however believe that the paintings are
00:21:39
still somewhere in the United States
00:21:40
that whoever has them now may not even
00:21:43
know they are stolen

00:22:15
recently we went to Canada to bring you
00:22:18
the story of one of that country's great
00:22:20
national tragedies for 20 years through
00:22:25
a well-meaning but misguided social
00:22:26
welfare system thousands of a Ghibli
00:22:29
Indian children were taken from their
00:22:31
families and the reservations to be put
00:22:34
up for adoption in the segment we
00:22:38
profiled a Seton family of winnipeg
00:22:41
manitoba
00:22:43
in 1969 the six children were taken from
00:22:47
their home by government social worker
00:22:50
where someone can take care of you
00:22:52
alright
00:22:52
Sandra Seaton the oldest was just nine
00:22:56
but it happened so fast they just you
00:22:59
know come in and they don't really
00:23:01
explain anything they just picked up the
00:23:03
kids and then put them in the car that
00:23:08
was real scary not knowing where they
00:23:11
were gonna be taken kind of go a little
00:23:14
dead inside or something you know cuz
00:23:18
you just we were all just kids at a
00:23:28
court hearing a judge order that all six
00:23:30
children be put up for adoption but
00:23:32
Sandra never gave up trying to reunite
00:23:35
her family
00:23:36
by 1988 she had found her two sisters
00:23:39
her mother and her oldest brother but
00:23:42
the two youngest boys Calvin and Bernie
00:23:45
were still missing all the night two
00:23:49
story aired in Canada
00:23:50
Bernie's adoptive parents one of
00:23:53
Calvin's former foster mothers were
00:23:54
watching the show through their efforts
00:23:57
and cooperation the two brothers are put
00:23:59
in touch with her sister Sandra three
00:24:01
weeks after our broadcast everything was
00:24:04
arranged March 4th 1993 would be a day
00:24:08
of reunions joy and tears
00:24:13
at 10:30 a.m. sander and her mother
00:24:16
Myrna were at the Winnipeg Airport
00:24:18
awaiting the arrival of Bernie
00:24:21
I had such an anxious feeling just
00:24:24
looking and wondering cuz I'd we hadn't
00:24:27
seen Bernie at all didn't see no picture
00:24:29
and I was oh I just an and all of a
00:24:32
sudden his face just you know sort of
00:24:35
just was right there and oh that's him
00:24:49
[Music]
00:24:56
with birdie back in the fold the group
00:24:59
headed to Mona's house with a new Kelvin
00:25:01
would be waiting
00:25:03
[Music]
00:25:14
in his youth Calvin had been shunted
00:25:17
about to 14 different foster families
00:25:19
now he was finally home again after
00:25:22
nearly 25 years it feels really good to
00:25:29
be taken in instead of being pushed away
00:25:32
hey like this is a big swish for me and
00:25:35
I'm happy if I knew bigger words I
00:25:42
probably could say some big word that
00:25:44
would describe how I feel right now but
00:25:47
there's no words that I can think of
00:25:50
that describes this just uh you know
00:25:53
it's the beginning I just think it's the
00:25:55
beginning of a good thing it's all good
00:25:59
it feels great
00:26:00
just great that there's a piece of my
00:26:03
life put together which I think all my
00:26:05
friends knew that there was a piece
00:26:07
missing maybe this is just the part to
00:26:09
my life that was missing
00:26:12
[Music]
00:26:14
it's got so much to talk about you know
00:26:18
so it's just a really great feeling
00:26:21
there is a piece you know there's there
00:26:23
was always that piece of my my heart
00:26:28
somehow just needed you know to know
00:26:31
that they were okay each one of us has
00:26:36
our own lives but it's it's so good to
00:26:39
know that we have family

Tom Roach and Barbara Rondo of Burbank
00:27:09
California loved nothing better than to
00:27:11
fire up their harley-davidson and hit
00:27:13
the road
00:27:18
they belong to a club that often drove
00:27:21
on weekend trips across California
00:27:26
Barbara and Tom met in Rhode Island and
00:27:29
moved to California in 1988 after 16
00:27:32
years together cycling was a passion
00:27:35
they shared we'd known each other since
00:27:39
76 in all our extra time was spent
00:27:43
riding Tom's my father lover teacher
00:27:50
guide
00:27:52
he's tons my life like their fellow
00:27:57
cycle club members who were lawyers
00:27:58
plumbers and accountants Tom and Barbara
00:28:01
held steady everyday jobs Barbara worked
00:28:09
at a blue print company tom was an
00:28:11
expert in metal plating in the fall of
00:28:14
1991 he accepted a well-paid management
00:28:17
position with a company that plated
00:28:19
aircraft parts he was to start on Monday
00:28:22
September 16th
00:28:24
[Music]
00:28:28
three days before on Friday the 13th
00:28:31
Tom drove Barbara to work they made
00:28:34
plans to meet for lunch but Tom never
00:28:43
showed up and never called to explain my
00:28:49
lunchtime came around and he wasn't
00:28:52
there
00:28:53
so just hanging around waiting for him
00:28:55
and no show no show and I thought maybe
00:28:59
that he might have gotten caught up at
00:29:01
his new place of employment but in fact
00:29:04
he would have called me and said you
00:29:06
know Barbara I'm not gonna be able to
00:29:08
make it I'm still at the plating shop or
00:29:10
whatever he Tom wouldn't know let me
00:29:14
just hang there you know waiting on him
00:29:17
by the time Barbara got home at about
00:29:20
5:30 p.m.
00:29:21
she still had not heard from Tom she was
00:29:25
surprised to find the front door
00:29:27
unlocked
00:29:41
[Music]
00:29:52
ha
00:29:55
there was no sign of town everything was
00:30:01
in its place except for Tom
00:30:07
but naumann his pattern soon emerged the
00:30:10
newspaper was still unopened strange
00:30:13
since Tom rarely left the sports page
00:30:15
unread a motorcycle battery that Tom had
00:30:19
planned to install that morning was on
00:30:21
the counter the answering machine was
00:30:24
off suggesting Tom had planned to be at
00:30:26
home most of the day Barbara had no
00:30:29
choice but to wait and hope I didn't
00:30:36
sleep at all that night it's just trying
00:30:41
to figure out where tom was and why he
00:30:44
hadn't called to let me know where he
00:30:48
might be
00:30:50
[Music]
00:30:54
there's a lot of different circumstances
00:30:56
for different types of missing-persons
00:30:59
they could take off because of family
00:31:01
problems they can take off because of
00:31:03
money problems they can take off for a
00:31:05
number of different reasons we really
00:31:07
don't know the reason until we get into
00:31:09
talking with the family or friends if
00:31:11
Tom in fact wanted to get out of our our
00:31:15
relationship or if again there was a
00:31:19
problem you know he Tom would have just
00:31:21
told me right out do you see a lot of
00:31:24
people going in and out of that house no
00:31:27
just him and Barb routine questioning
00:31:30
around the neighborhood turned up
00:31:32
nothing significant police could not
00:31:35
determine where the talent left
00:31:36
voluntarily or become the victim of some
00:31:38
kind of violence it was as though Tom
00:31:41
Roach had simply evaporated
00:31:44
however Barbara was convinced something
00:31:46
terrible had happened to Tom when she
00:31:48
circulated these Flyers at his usual
00:31:50
hangouts no one came forward with any
00:31:53
information and Tom Roach was officially
00:31:56
listed as a missing person a day passed
00:32:02
then too soon five Barbara's father flew
00:32:07
in from Rhode Island to be with her then
00:32:09
on Thursday September 19th a letter
00:32:12
arrived addressed to the family of Tom
00:32:14
Roach

00:32:25
in the envelope for Toms driver's
00:32:27
license and the earring he had been
00:32:29
wearing the day he disappeared
00:32:31
they were unfolded in a letter a bizarre
00:32:34
confession would wrench the case in a
00:32:36
sinister and new direction this is the
00:32:42
actual letter received by Barbara Rondo
00:32:44
it begins you don't know me and
00:32:48
hopefully never will but I am the one
00:32:50
who killed Tom Roach I sent along some
00:32:53
personal belongings of his just so that
00:32:55
you won't think this is some kind of
00:32:57
sick joke or anything
00:32:59
finally the self-proclaimed killer goes
00:33:01
on to say I am very sorry for what I
00:33:04
have done I know in time what the guilt
00:33:06
will leave me so will your pain was
00:33:15
there someone who might have wanted to
00:33:16
hurt him barbar Rondo was devastated had
00:33:27
Tom Roach been murdered
00:33:28
where was the letter a hoax it yielded
00:33:31
no fingerprints bore no return address
00:33:33
and was of course unsigned it was just
00:33:38
unbelievable but I wasn't going to
00:33:43
believe that that tom was dead
00:33:51
authorities immediately renewed their
00:33:53
efforts to track Tom Roach's activities
00:33:55
on Friday the 13th bank records show Tom
00:34:00
made two deposits at approximately 820
00:34:02
a.m. he did not withdraw any money
00:34:06
indicating he had no plans to leave town
00:34:15
Tom was next seen by a neighbor talking
00:34:19
with an unidentified white male at about
00:34:21
9:30 a.m. if the letter is not a hoax
00:34:25
and police believe this man may have
00:34:28
been Tom's killer
00:34:30
we contacted wend witness who told us
00:34:32
that she had seen Thomas that morning
00:34:35
with another subject standing by a
00:34:37
pickup truck looking into the bed of the
00:34:39
pickup truck she said that they were not
00:34:42
arguing it look like they were just
00:34:43
carrying on a normal conversation and
00:34:46
there was nothing suspicious about that
00:34:48
and I believe that was the last time
00:34:50
Thomas was seen however testimony from
00:34:56
one eyewitness suggest the letter may
00:34:58
indeed be a hoax an employee at a
00:35:01
motorcycle parts store in nearby
00:35:03
Glendale is convinced Tom came in on
00:35:05
Saturday September 14th one day after
00:35:09
the letter said tom was killed he acted
00:35:14
a little strange in the sense that he
00:35:16
didn't joke around with me I mean we
00:35:20
would always joke around about what kind
00:35:22
of motorcycle a rodent about it or
00:35:24
leaking oil and stuff you know so I mean
00:35:26
I knew Tom well enough to know Saturday
00:35:28
that it was Tom that came in I had gone
00:35:33
into the warehouse to pick up some parts
00:35:35
for the customer and when I came out Tom
00:35:39
wasn't there or anything so he must have
00:35:43
left when I was in in the warehouse and
00:35:48
I mean I just feel this kind of strange
00:35:50
that he didn't say anything when he came
00:35:52
in or when he left
00:35:55
authorities believe handy marsala did
00:35:58
see Tom Roach but suspect he is mistaken
00:36:00
about the date
00:36:02
however the account raises a disturbing
00:36:04
possibility
00:36:05
perhaps Tom Roach intentionally fled and
00:36:08
wrote the grotesque letter to cover his
00:36:11
tracks
00:36:14
for months past with no clues no
00:36:18
eyewitnesses and no further letters the
00:36:20
investigation dragged to a standstill
00:36:22
until January 11th 1992 that afternoon
00:36:32
authorities in Placer County California
00:36:35
almost 500 miles north of Burbank were
00:36:38
called to investigate a report of
00:36:40
weathered bone fragments and personal
00:36:42
effects strewn over a remote hillside
00:36:46
motorcycle emblems on some of the
00:36:48
clothing eventually led authorities to
00:36:50
link the items to Tom Roche
00:36:56
the scattered possessions included a
00:36:58
duffel bag flashlight hunting-knife
00:37:02
bottled water two pairs of prescription
00:37:05
eyeglasses an empty prescription
00:37:07
medicine bottle and several shirts if
00:37:11
the items were indeed Tom's he seemed to
00:37:14
have been packed and ready for the road
00:37:17
investigators contacted Barbara Rondo
00:37:20
she recognized all the shirts and a pair
00:37:23
of eyeglass frames as Tom's I do feel
00:37:28
that what they found is Tom but there's
00:37:33
that hope that he is still out there
00:37:38
somewhere and that in fact I will find
00:37:41
him
00:37:43
[Music]
00:37:49
what is the truth about Tom Roach the
00:37:53
mysterious letter taken at face value
00:37:55
would explain
00:37:56
Tom's disappearance unless it was
00:37:59
written by Tom Roach himself it has been
00:38:04
a nightmare it has been hell
00:38:07
I still live for Tom he's my life
00:38:14
[Music]
00:38:18
there's not a minute that goes by that
00:38:20
he's not within my thoughts
00:38:25
he'll always be within me
00:38:30
it is interesting to note that this
00:38:32
letter claims Tom Roach who is murdered
00:38:34
and then buried in the Los Angeles area
00:38:36
the only 500 miles south of Placer
00:38:38
County within the next few months
00:38:41
authorities will conduct DNA tests on
00:38:43
the bone fragments to finally prove
00:38:45
whether they are Tom's remains until
00:38:48
then the only person may be able to
00:38:50
answer the questions in this case is the
00:38:52
author of the letter and for now his
00:38:55
identity remains a mystery
00:38:58
[Music]
00:39:14
when we return the only clues in a
00:39:17
murder case come from the victim himself
00:39:20
before he dies fortunately the only
00:39:32
contact most of us will ever have with
00:39:33
random violent crime is watching the
00:39:36
nightly news random crime is very real
00:39:39
extremely difficult for police to solve
00:39:42
an utterly impossible for families
00:39:44
touched by the violence to comprehend
00:39:46
one such family was the Hurley's of
00:39:49
Turtle Creek Pennsylvania Pam and David
00:39:54
Hurley were married in 1983 by 1988
00:39:58
their family had grown to include three
00:40:00
sons the hurdy shared a nun dramatic but
00:40:04
happy life until the early morning hours
00:40:06
of Saturday June 13th 1992
00:40:10
that weekend David and his brother were
00:40:13
taking a troop of Boy Scouts on a
00:40:15
long-planned canoe trip honey I'm just
00:40:23
gonna go I'm too wound up to sleep I'm
00:40:26
gonna go pick up some doughnuts and head
00:40:28
over to my brother's hang out there till
00:40:29
we go okay
00:40:31
okay you'll have a good weekend thank
00:40:34
you I love you David left home at 1:30
00:40:39
a.m. about an hour and a half later
00:40:44
Pam was startled to hear her husband
00:40:47
calling out David
00:40:48
[Music]
00:40:53
what are you doing home I've been shot
00:41:05
what are you talking about I was stunned
00:41:11
and thoroughly shocked
00:41:13
I just couldn't comprehend that he get
00:41:16
been shot that was just too unbelievable
00:41:19
while they waited for paramedics to
00:41:22
arrive David told his wife about the
00:41:24
chilling events of that morning David is
00:41:29
stopped for doughnuts and was heading
00:41:30
toward his brother's house suddenly a
00:41:32
car appeared out of nowhere
00:41:41
David told family expected simply to
00:41:44
exchange insurance information with the
00:41:46
other driver what happened next
00:41:48
defies reason
00:41:58
[Music]
00:42:17
he said all he can remember is getting
00:42:20
the van and trying desperately to get
00:42:23
home to get away police and paramedics
00:42:29
arrived at around 3:30 a.m. David told
00:42:32
his story again he was called for a
00:42:36
person had just been shot he was able to
00:42:39
give me the information I had was asking
00:42:42
for so we could stop this vehicle before
00:42:45
it got too far away from our area at
00:42:47
that particular time I was concerned
00:42:49
with getting information that I could
00:42:51
put on the air for the other units that
00:42:54
were still out on the road David Hurley
00:42:58
would be rushed by helicopter to
00:42:59
Presbyterian University Hospital in
00:43:01
Pittsburgh six miles away at 4:30 a.m.
00:43:05
he was wheeled into emergency surgery
00:43:07
his doctors emerged from the operating
00:43:10
room two hours later and I remember we
00:43:13
looked at the clock and it was 6:30 a.m.
00:43:15
and I looked at my brother and I said
00:43:17
this is great they're done already it
00:43:19
must have been a lot better than we
00:43:21
expected because we expected four to
00:43:23
five hours from what they told us
00:43:26
in addition to gunshot wounds and the
00:43:28
arm and shoulder
00:43:29
David was bleeding internally from a
00:43:31
lacerated liver the surgeon told Pam
00:43:34
that the operation had progressed well
00:43:36
until without warning David went into
00:43:38
acute cardiac arrest I said to him
00:43:43
you've got to be kidding and he said no
00:43:49
I'm not kidding he's dead
