Forensic Files Season 11, Episode 13 - Undertaken - Full Episode

January 20, 2022 / 21:42

This episode covers the mysterious death of Frankie Pullian in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1980, which was initially ruled an accident but later determined to be a homicide. Key topics include the autopsy discrepancies, the investigation into insurance fraud, and the eventual convictions of those involved.

Frankie Pullian, a handyman at a local funeral home, was found dead under a stolen car. The initial autopsy concluded he died from a hit-and-run, but forensic detective Walter Suhaka raised doubts about this conclusion, noting the lack of skid marks and unusual blood patterns.

After three years, a second autopsy revealed blunt force trauma to Pullian's skull, leading to a change in the cause of death from accident to homicide. Investigators uncovered multiple life insurance policies taken out on Pullian, raising suspicions about his employer, E. Lee White, and others.

Evidence suggested that White and his associates conspired to murder Pullian for insurance money. They were found guilty of first-degree murder and insurance fraud, with the case highlighting the role of forensic evidence in uncovering the truth.

The episode concludes with reflections on the motivations behind the crime and the tragic fate of Frankie Pullian, who was an unwitting victim in his own murder.

TL;DR

Frankie Pullian's death was ruled a homicide after evidence of insurance fraud and staged accident emerged, leading to convictions of his employer and accomplices.

00:00:10
disagreed
00:00:12

00:00:48
paterson new jersey is an industrial
00:00:50
suburb outside new york city which has
00:00:52
its share of violent crime
00:00:56
one of the town's most unusual cases
00:00:58
happened in 1980.
00:01:01
i would personally rank it as being one
00:01:03
of the most interesting challenging
00:01:05
cases i ever had
00:01:07
29 year old frankie pullian was found
00:01:10
dead on a deserted road underneath an
00:01:13
abandoned car
00:01:15
apparently the person driving the
00:01:17
vehicle hit frankie then fled the scene
00:01:20
leaving the vehicle behind
00:01:23
frankie pullian worked for a local
00:01:25
funeral home as a handyman
00:01:28
before that he served a brief stint in
00:01:30
the u.s military he would run errands
00:01:33
for the funeral home
00:01:35
and the funeral home was also kind of a
00:01:37
stopping off point for the police as
00:01:39
well
00:01:40
and it was one of the
00:01:44
the more successful black funeral homes
00:01:47
in paterson
00:01:48
police discovered that the hit-and-run
00:01:50
vehicle had been stolen a month earlier
00:01:53
the owner was a retired policeman who
00:01:56
lived nearby who had an alibi for the
00:01:58
night before he was an elderly gentleman
00:02:01
there was no way that anyone would even
00:02:03
in their wildest dreams or imagination
00:02:05
uh suspected he was involved in this
00:02:09
to approximate the time of the accident
00:02:12
patterson police checked patrolman's
00:02:13
records for the night before
00:02:16
and found
00:02:17
an important clue
00:02:19
earlier that morning at approximately 4
00:02:21
a.m the same patrol unit did pass that
00:02:25
area and the significance of that is
00:02:27
when they did pass at that time
00:02:30
the maverick and the body were not there
00:02:33
since frankie's body was discovered at 6
00:02:36
00 am
00:02:37
the accident occurred sometime between
00:02:40
4 and 6 a.m

00:02:43
but what was frankie pullian doing
00:02:46
walking along this street in this part
00:02:48
of town
00:02:49
so early in the morning
00:02:52
it wouldn't be a place where you'd
00:02:54
generally be taking a walk but it
00:02:56
certainly would be a good place for a
00:02:58
crime because it was dark and
00:03:01
it was unlikely there'd be other people
00:03:03
around
00:03:04
frankie's body went directly to the
00:03:06
funeral home where he worked the medical
00:03:09
examiner conducted the autopsy there a
00:03:12
common procedure at the time
00:03:15
state county did not have a centralized
00:03:16
more and what they did have were
00:03:18
contracts with various funeral homes
00:03:21
that would act as morgues
00:03:24
the medical examiner concluded that
00:03:26
frankie died of massive trauma
00:03:29
the result of the hit-and-run accident
00:03:32
there was nothing to show otherwise that
00:03:35
it was other than a hit and run due to
00:03:37
the nature of the injuries
00:03:39
that were reported by the m.a
00:03:42
but despite the autopsy report
00:03:44
investigators were troubled
00:03:46
they thought some of the elements of the
00:03:48
accident scene looked staged
00:03:51
this car was at the far end of dead end
00:03:53
street the car looked like it was facing
00:03:55
out i don't know how this individual
00:03:57
driving this vehicle could have gotten
00:03:58
enough speed to run over somebody and
00:04:01
kill them in the short distance
00:04:04
investigators searched the stolen
00:04:06
vehicle for clues to the driver's
00:04:08
identity
00:04:10
there were no fingerprints in the car
00:04:12
not even on the steering wheel but
00:04:14
investigators found blood inside the car
00:04:17
on the passenger side which was very
00:04:20
suspicious
00:04:22
then instantly it gets more interesting
00:04:25
and the focus of the investigation
00:04:28
began to change
00:04:32
to find out whether frankie pullian's
00:04:34
death was truly the result of a
00:04:36
hit-and-run vehicle accident
00:04:38
investigators called in walter suhaka a
00:04:42
nationally recognized expert in accident
00:04:44
reconstruction
00:04:46
luckily police had taken numerous photos
00:04:49
of the scene
00:04:50
and what suhaka didn't see in those
00:04:53
pictures
00:04:55
was telling
00:04:56
behind the car there were no skid marks
00:04:59
anybody that comes down the road that
00:05:00
hits a pedestrian in those days before
00:05:03
abs brakes the first thing a person
00:05:05
would do would be slam on the brakes
00:05:06
there's no skid marks
00:05:08
there should have been
00:05:10
serious front-end damage to the car but
00:05:13
there was none
00:05:16
and the position of the body under the
00:05:19
car didn't make any sense
00:05:22
in a pedestrian accident with a
00:05:23
gentleman who's five foot eight inches
00:05:25
tall and he weighed 144 pounds you would
00:05:28
expect that if he was struck by a car he
00:05:30
would end up on the hood of the car
00:05:32
striking the windshield and then roll
00:05:33
off the side
00:05:38
also it looked as if the impact
00:05:41
literally knocked the victim's coat off
00:05:43
his body suhaka said this could not be
00:05:47
the natural result of an accident how
00:05:50
does the coke come off it did not make
00:05:51
sense also there was a watch with just a
00:05:54
watch face with no straps
00:05:56
that didn't make sense at all we never
00:05:57
found the straps
00:05:59
but most telling was the blood found in
00:06:03
the tire tracks behind the car
00:06:07
if frankie had been hit by the front of
00:06:09
the car
00:06:10
and lodged underneath
00:06:12
his blood wouldn't be behind the rear
00:06:15
tires
00:06:15
[Music]
00:06:17
and mr suhaka found blood spatter on the
00:06:20
windshield inside the car and blood
00:06:23
drops on the inside trim of the
00:06:26
passenger side door
00:06:29
obviously there wouldn't be blood inside
00:06:31
a car from a collision outside
00:06:34
it was one of my suggestions that we
00:06:36
need to exhume the body to find out
00:06:39
what the actual injuries were
00:06:42
since the death had officially been
00:06:44
declared an accident
00:06:46
it took more than three years of legal
00:06:48
wrangling to get permission for the
00:06:51
exumation
00:06:54
the second autopsy was conducted by dr
00:06:57
gita natarajan
00:06:59
a pathologist with the state coroner's
00:07:01
office
00:07:02
the first thing i noticed is the
00:07:05
level of preservation
00:07:07
and the condition of the body being fair
00:07:11
the second most important finding was
00:07:13
that the external
00:07:15
body surface
00:07:18
failed to show
00:07:20
any injury there were no
00:07:22
bruises
00:07:24
there were no
00:07:25
brush burn like he was dragged by a
00:07:27
vehicle
00:07:29
dr natarajan discovered four linear
00:07:32
fractures along the back of the skull
00:07:36
one
00:07:37
a depressed circular fracture was not
00:07:40
noted in the first autopsy
00:07:43
this blow
00:07:44
by a hammer-like object to the back of
00:07:47
the head
00:07:48
did not happen from being hit by a car
00:07:51
it's a very small
00:07:53
area of concentrated energy
00:07:56
and that's unusual
00:07:58
when someone is struck by an automobile
00:08:01
you can't
00:08:03
take an automobile and make it you know
00:08:04
and have a person's
00:08:07
skull
00:08:08
being struck by by a small area of one
00:08:11
and a half by three quarter inch
00:08:14
and there were wood splinters around the
00:08:16
wound
00:08:17
well first of all under a car in front
00:08:19
of car there's no wood
00:08:21
why would there be wood splinters in the
00:08:23
skull this was never mentioned during
00:08:25
the first autopsy nor do i believe
00:08:28
that an autopsy or an examination of the
00:08:31
full examination of the skull was ever
00:08:32
done during the first autopsy
00:08:35
there were also no broken limbs
00:08:38
virtually unheard of when a pedestrian
00:08:41
is hit by a car
00:08:43
so dr natarajan changed the official
00:08:46
manner of death from
00:08:48
accident
00:08:50
to homicide
00:08:52
but how were these injuries overlooked
00:08:55
in the first autopsy
00:08:58
the medical examiner who did the autopsy
00:09:00
who issued the initial death certificate
00:09:03
was not a forensic pathologist
00:09:06
he was not even a pathologist he was a
00:09:09
general practitioner
00:09:12
he did what best he he could do under
00:09:15
the circumstance but he was not
00:09:18
trained formally in pathology or in
00:09:21
forensic pathology
00:09:23
and that autopsy was conducted at the
00:09:25
funeral home of e lee white
00:09:28
the victim's employer
00:09:30
apparently white started the examination
00:09:34
before the coroner arrived
00:09:37
the medical examiner remembers mr white
00:09:40
calling him and saying
00:09:43
doc i will go ahead and start with the
00:09:45
case so when you get here i'll have the
00:09:48
organs out
00:09:50
investigators now suspected that the
00:09:53
original medical examiner didn't perform
00:09:56
much of an autopsy
00:09:59
apparently he accepted the hit-and-run
00:10:01
scenario since frankie's body was found
00:10:04
underneath the car
00:10:06
regardless
00:10:08
investigators now knew frankie pullian
00:10:11
was murdered
00:10:13
but why
00:10:18
there were two separate autopsies
00:10:20
performed on frankie pullian's remains
00:10:22
done three years apart
00:10:25
the original autopsy concluded frankie's
00:10:28
death was the result of an automobile
00:10:30
accident
00:10:32
the second autopsy concluded he was
00:10:34
murdered with a blunt instrument before
00:10:37
his body was placed beneath the car
00:10:40
had law enforcement had that information
00:10:42
in the very beginning obviously this
00:10:43
case would have gotten in much different
00:10:45
direction right from day one
00:10:47
and the photos of the vehicle provided
00:10:50
evidence of where frankie was killed
00:10:53
when i started reading reports they said
00:10:55
there was blood inside the car i i had
00:10:57
to read the report twice it just didn't
00:10:58
make sense turned out there was spatter
00:11:01
from blood on the inside windshield in
00:11:04
on the dashboard
00:11:05
serology test identified the blood in
00:11:08
the car as type o
00:11:10
the same blood type as frankie pullian
00:11:14
now suspicious
00:11:16
investigators dug a little deeper into
00:11:18
frankie's background
00:11:21
for a man making less than ten thousand
00:11:23
dollars a year frankie had
00:11:26
nine separate insurance policies on his
00:11:29
life with a total payout of nearly a
00:11:32
million dollars it's very unusual that
00:11:35
you would take out almost a million
00:11:36
dollars worth of insurance and then
00:11:38
within a few short months someone should
00:11:39
die i mean that to me that raises a flag
00:11:42
automatically
00:11:43
the insurance premiums total 3 500 a
00:11:46
year almost half of frankie's annual
00:11:49
salary
00:11:51
first thing you're thinking is that
00:11:53
certainly this is not right it's very
00:11:55
odd to say the least but
00:11:57
it certainly raises the possibility that
00:12:00
there's an insurance fraud going on
00:12:03
and who were the beneficiaries of
00:12:06
frankie's life insurance policies
00:12:09
one was his boss and long-time
00:12:11
benefactor e lee white
00:12:14
for his employer to insure him so
00:12:17
heavily with multiple policies for large
00:12:19
sums of money was very suspicious
00:12:22
and which now creates a motive
00:12:26
for
00:12:27
the death of franklin bullion
00:12:29
another beneficiary was erna boone
00:12:32
listed on the policy as frankie's sister
00:12:35
but records showed frankie had no sister
00:12:38
and that erna boone was the maiden name
00:12:42
of e lee white's wife
00:12:45
and two of white's friends
00:12:47
lawrence scott and william brown were
00:12:50
also beneficiaries
00:12:52
brown had been convicted a few years
00:12:54
earlier for fraud
00:12:56
lauren scott and william brown who both
00:12:58
had affiliations with the funeral home
00:13:00
and with mr white
00:13:01
also were beneficiaries on the policy
00:13:04
and the familiar relationship that was
00:13:05
cited there was one of being cousins
00:13:07
they weren't cousins
00:13:09
coincidentally the insurance policies
00:13:12
also contained an accidental death
00:13:15
provision meaning
00:13:17
there was an extra payout of 350 000
00:13:21
if frankie pullian died
00:13:23
in an accident
00:13:24
[Music]
00:13:25
the last of the policies was issued just
00:13:28
five days before frankie's death
00:13:33
frankie's medical records indicated he
00:13:35
was released from the military because
00:13:37
he was neurologically impaired
00:13:40
i think within six to eight months he
00:13:41
was released discharged from the service
00:13:44
because he couldn't pass the particular
00:13:46
tests that were required of him
00:13:49
yet the man who underwent the physical
00:13:52
examination for the life insurance
00:13:54
policies was not neurologically impaired
00:13:58
that individual who purported to be
00:14:00
franklin pullian was healthy and fit
00:14:03
certainly it wasn't the same person
00:14:05
and there was another bizarre incident
00:14:08
at the physical examination
00:14:10
the person who represented himself to be
00:14:12
mr pullian had notes handwritten notes
00:14:15
and every time he was asked a question
00:14:16
about his life his lifestyle he referred
00:14:18
to his notes
00:14:20
which i would think would cause some
00:14:22
concern but apparently did not
00:14:25
a forensic document examiner compared
00:14:28
frankie's known handwriting samples to
00:14:30
the signatures on the insurance policies
00:14:33
and concluded
00:14:35
they were forgeries
00:14:36
so someone who met with the insurance
00:14:39
riders the insurance salesman
00:14:42
had to pose as mr pulliam
00:14:45
it's pretty crazy and these are the
00:14:46
things that we would look at and all of
00:14:47
a sudden you realize you know what
00:14:49
there's something that really is wrong
00:14:50
here
00:14:52
when questioned by investigators e lee
00:14:54
white admitted he purchased the life
00:14:56
insurance policies but said
00:14:59
he had nothing to do with frankie's
00:15:01
death
00:15:03
then a witness came forward with some
00:15:07
not so surprising information
00:15:09
on the night before frankie's murder
00:15:12
she saw the car from the staged accident
00:15:14
scene parked outside e lee white's
00:15:17
funeral home
00:15:19
[Music]
00:15:22
the only ones who stood to gain from
00:15:24
frankie pullian's death were his boss
00:15:26
elie white's wife and two fellow
00:15:29
employees lawrence scott and william
00:15:32
brown
00:15:33
they were beneficiaries of nine
00:15:36
different insurance policies on
00:15:38
frankie's life that totaled nearly
00:15:40
a million dollars
00:15:42
humans are very greedy people and now
00:15:44
they see that there's an opportunity for
00:15:46
them to make almost a million dollars
00:15:48
they forget about their consciences and
00:15:50
they'll do anything to make a fast buck
00:15:53
prosecutors believe that mr white was
00:15:56
the ringleader and he had planned the
00:15:58
crime for years hiring frankie for the
00:16:02
sole purpose
00:16:03
of killing him
00:16:05
it's extremely sad but apparently the
00:16:07
people that perpetrated this crime
00:16:09
realized that that's the kind of victim
00:16:10
that they needed they needed to find
00:16:12
someone that no one would care about and
00:16:15
no one would come forward and knock on
00:16:17
doors and look
00:16:18
to question anything that had
00:16:20
happened mr white purchased multiple
00:16:23
life insurance policies on frankie's
00:16:25
life and sent imposters to the required
00:16:29
physical examinations
00:16:32
a witness reported seeing the stolen car
00:16:35
parked outside the funeral home the
00:16:37
night before the crime
00:16:42
[Music]
00:16:45
the evidence indicates someone
00:16:47
no one knows who
00:16:49
lured frankie pullian into the stolen
00:16:52
vehicle and hit him on the back of the
00:16:54
skull
00:16:54
[Music]
00:16:58
this created the blood spatter on the
00:17:00
inside of the windshield and dashboard
00:17:02
and
00:17:03
the dripping blood on the chrome strip
00:17:06
on the bottom of the passenger side door
00:17:13
the perpetrators placed frankie's body
00:17:15
on the ground
00:17:17
and drove over it
00:17:19
but in doing so
00:17:20
left blood behind the vehicle
00:17:23
they made other mistakes too like
00:17:25
leaving frankie's clothing and shoes in
00:17:28
the wrong position
00:17:30
ely white knew that frankie's body would
00:17:33
come directly to his funeral home for
00:17:36
the autopsy
00:17:38
he also knew he could start the autopsy
00:17:40
without raising the suspicions of the
00:17:43
medical examiner who apparently
00:17:45
did little to investigate the death on
00:17:48
his own
00:17:49
he did not go to the scene he did not
00:17:51
look at the vehicle he did not talk to
00:17:54
the officers who were at the scene he
00:17:55
did not look at any photographs he did
00:17:58
not examine the clothing of the victim
00:18:00
these are all types of things that one
00:18:02
would expect would be done
00:18:03
following a proper protocol of an
00:18:05
autopsy
00:18:07
and investigators believe
00:18:09
white chose frankie pullian as his
00:18:11
victim because he was single and had no
00:18:14
close family living in the area
00:18:18
e lee white and his alleged
00:18:21
co-conspirators were all charged with
00:18:23
murder and insurance fraud
00:18:26
they claimed there was no physical
00:18:29
evidence tying them to a murder and
00:18:31
investigators agreed
00:18:33
but they said the circumstances linking
00:18:36
the defendants to the crime
00:18:38
were overwhelming
00:18:40
you take all of that together you know
00:18:42
that there was an intentional killing
00:18:43
but you know that it was a staged
00:18:45
accident and you know that four people
00:18:47
stood to make
00:18:48
over nine hundred thousand dollars if
00:18:51
this theory of an accident could hold up
00:18:54
you put all of that together and it
00:18:56
spells out one thing to us and that is
00:18:58
murder for profit
00:19:00
perhaps what's most tragic about the
00:19:03
case is that frankie pullian was an
00:19:06
unwitting participant
00:19:08
in his own murder he was the kind of
00:19:11
person
00:19:12
that would not suspect anything beyond
00:19:14
the obvious
00:19:15
[Music]
00:19:17
e lee white
00:19:18
lauren scott and william brown were all
00:19:21
found guilty of first degree murder and
00:19:24
insurance fraud
00:19:26
and sentenced to life in prison this
00:19:28
case is probably the most fascinating
00:19:30
case i had in the 23 years that i served
00:19:33
as a judge the murder mystery is
00:19:35
actually who did it
00:19:38
there were three people that were tried
00:19:40
and three people convicted
00:19:42
but
00:19:43
who did it there has been no one that
00:19:46
has come forward with any information
00:19:48
regarding the homicide of franklin
00:19:51
pullian
00:19:52
that would indicate
00:19:54
who the actual killer was
00:19:56
the compelling conclusion was that the
00:19:59
individuals who were the owners and
00:20:00
beneficiaries of these policies were the
00:20:02
ones that were responsible for bringing
00:20:04
about the death of franklin pulling
00:20:06
we can't say that they did it by their
00:20:08
own hand we don't know who did it
00:20:10
but we know that they conspired to have
00:20:12
it done
00:20:14
ely white's wife erner was convicted of
00:20:17
fraud and theft by deception she was
00:20:20
placed on probation
00:20:23
investigators say
00:20:24
eli white and his accomplices almost got
00:20:27
away with a cold calculated murder
00:20:31
but their greed and the clues they left
00:20:34
behind
00:20:35
finally exposed the truth
00:20:38
if frank and pullian didn't die so soon
00:20:41
after the policies were written maybe no
00:20:43
one's suspicions would have been aroused
00:20:45
at that time but i think they saw this
00:20:47
pot of gold and they probably tripped
00:20:49
themselves up because they wanted a fast
00:20:51
payoff
00:20:53
it all comes down to forensic evidence
00:20:55
and forensic evidence doesn't lie
00:20:58
it doesn't make up stories

what it is
