00:00:00
Mark Hunter Richardson welcome to my podcast yeah thank you very much for having me you know this is it's quite an
00:00:05
honor is it actually well I've heard about this podcast you know many many times you've had some great guests and
00:00:11
it's one of the more well-known ones I guess around in New Zealand well I I appreciate that and um I'm not just
00:00:16
saying this uh you for me are a dream guest oh really yeah yeah yeah we've worked together over the years I I
00:00:22
wouldn't describe us as as friends but our we worked in the same building and I
00:00:26
always um enjoyed our little if we were making coffees at the same time we always have a little chat about running
00:00:31
and I always enjoyed our little conversations well had similar interests yeah that's the thing Clint Randall who
00:00:36
was my co-host he he came back to the studio one morning he said oh I was just uh in the bathroom the same time as the
00:00:41
tools down guy from the Block and [ __ ] he's he's nothing like that in real
00:00:45
life only people are surprised when they meet you cuz you're quite gregarious on
00:00:49
TV and in real life you're quite sort of I don't know introverted I guess I think
00:00:53
a lot of people are like that yeah I mean you're a magnification yourself I think you have to be in broadcasting or
00:00:58
you come across as a little FL um and then you can you can put on top of that the Persona I created or the
00:01:05
brand that I tried to create via Crow go wild and then and then the am show people you know thought I must have been
00:01:13
a complete [ __ ] and I hope I hope when they got to know me you know they realized that's
00:01:19
that's not the case a lot of it is performance as you know you well it it has to be yeah it has to be like an
00:01:24
extension of yourself or like a character to a degree because otherwise it's just [ __ ] boring yeah my when I
00:01:30
did the crow ghost wild I tried to work on the brand that I'm going to be everything that I would love to be but
00:01:36
could never be and that's what I worked on so who who is the real Mark Richardson
00:01:41
then always find you quite charming and friendly I I think home bod for a start um pretty conservative very conservative
00:01:52
um competitive and driven and wanting to succeed but um without a doubt probably
00:01:59
quite quite shy in a social setting you know I get very nervous um going into a room full of people I don't know and I
00:02:08
think for a long time there that shyness you know often got Mis misu as as um was arrogance maybe you know but
00:02:19
yeah that's something that I've always hoped I have not been and never really
00:02:22
taken anything that's happened that's been positive for granted no I've never
00:02:26
I've never thought you were arrogant um a fun fun person a guy that doesn't take
00:02:31
himself too seriously a guy that can take the P but also a guy that can be incredibly serious when he needs to be
00:02:37
yeah I hope just been a you know been able to read the situation and deliver what's needed to be delivered um but
00:02:42
you're laughing I think the New Zealand psyche likes people who can laugh at
00:02:46
themselves but in terms of that on Persona it was it was always a a big magnification of myself and when the
00:02:54
read light on the camera wasn't on uh or the microphone you know I I tended to
00:03:00
tend to be quite reserved yeah you and I we've got um quite a few things in common so we we're
00:03:06
both introverts um both sort of loners I I love being on my own uh home bodies as
00:03:12
well and and hates hates crowds yeah I saw some Instagram stories last week so the um the last um Media Company you and
00:03:20
I both worked for was media works it was the media weeks Christmas party and I saw a few stories there and I was
00:03:24
thinking oh I've got a bit of fomo but the reality is if I was still working
00:03:28
there I wouldn't have even gone no I I think I went to my first Christmas party that I've been to for a
00:03:33
long time um when I went to the for sou bar one uh you know I I tended to avoid those sort of social settings you know
00:03:41
youd stand around sort of trying to make small talk with people it just it doesn't it really doesn't come naturally
00:03:47
yeah yeah when I'm when I'm at those things all I'm thinking about is how
00:03:50
quickly I can leave without how long do I have to stay here and and not and for it not to be noticed when I when I leave
00:03:58
yeah yeah so that's your that's your role now you you're now a financial
00:04:02
advisor at foresight bar yeah so big change big change so yeah an investment advisor there uh so I guess sheer broker
00:04:11
and old money but that's not really how it's done nowadays um always had an
00:04:15
interest in finance and got an opportunity to do it and obviously going through um still going through the
00:04:22
accreditation process but I I am a a registered financial advisor so I can give sort of financial advice um but
00:04:28
when it comes to maybe you know the wider sense um you know you're under supervision there for quite some time
00:04:35
because they can't just let you loose to make to make all sorts of mistakes you
00:04:39
know because you're representing the the uh the company so um you know it's it's
00:04:46
if I do anything it's under the very very watchful gaze of some pretty pretty
00:04:51
clued up people there this is a really interesting third so I'd say it's like a
00:04:56
third act so there's the cricket career wildly successful media career wildly successful and um
00:05:02
hopefully the same now but it's a um it seems like an unusual like drastic pivot
00:05:07
from what you were doing let's say you have three careers in life so I'm on to
00:05:11
the third and final one and I need to make it work yeah oh well you well I mean your track record would suggest it
00:05:16
will work it's interesting you say you know successful broadcasting career I I
00:05:20
like don't feel like it was that successful are you [ __ ] kidding me I guess I I guess when you're in it it's
00:05:28
an industry whereby I don't think you realize what you have got you you might
00:05:32
be on prime time TV and radio or what have you um you know in two different things but you but you're always sort of
00:05:39
going why AR I doing that why I on that show oh you always want more yeah you always want more I think it's just that
00:05:44
insecurity of it all yeah when I look back for my sport there's some there's
00:05:48
some things that I I I you know were disappointed I didn't achieve but when I
00:05:54
do look back at my Cricket career I go yeah you you succeeded you overachieved without a doubt I feel I overachieved in
00:06:01
in the sporting sense um but in the broadcasting no I just I feel I never really reached where I wanted to to get
00:06:07
to and and then realized that that wasn't going to happen so are you I mean you're still doing Cricut stuff this um
00:06:14
podcast today was set up by um the wonderful lemily at tvnz so you're doing uh cricket commentary is that the only
00:06:20
media sort of stuff you're doing you've completely turned your back on it now
00:06:23
pretty pretty much I mean a lot of that decision was made for me I can't claim
00:06:27
that you know I said not interested cuz the work dried up so um but yeah I love the cricket commentary that's my passion
00:06:36
um and you know don't I would probably do it for free no hear that I'm not I absolutely love it and and I'm so
00:06:47
lucky now that I can have this other opportunity and another career which hopefully I can still be doing in 10
00:06:53
years time and succeeding at and and you know at least for the next three years TV and Z have the rights and hopefully
00:07:01
I'll be involved in that because I I just love I love I have a real passion for for Cricket commentary really do
00:07:09
well this is a massive loss for New Zealand um media I think uh I don't think they think
00:07:15
that well no it just does I'm guessing it's been a rough year for you so you um
00:07:20
you doing the am show and then there were changes there then today F came along that only lasted a year um the
00:07:27
Project's gone as well what's happening with the block well the block is
00:07:32
officially on hold um because the market was down they wanted they really didn't
00:07:39
want to take the risk of having unsold properties long story short but when when the when the network also became
00:07:45
the production company then having having unsold properties was not good it it was eating it would eat into
00:07:52
commercial Revenue so um the model changed a little bit so they put it on hold and that's the last I've heard of
00:07:57
it haven't really even heard been that was was over a year ago and haven't had
00:08:01
any correspondence since then as to or an update whether even considering it and I've I guess I've been forced to
00:08:09
move on well yeah I mean you can only tread water for so long can't you you really need to sort of like draw a line
00:08:14
in the sand I guess and get on with your life well I I I I need a life and I can't put it on hold and the hope that
00:08:20
you know I can I can when the block comes back I can do it um but that phone call hasn't come yet um I I don't know
00:08:28
if it will come back a lot of there's a lot of water has flowing under the bridge but right now I've heard nothing
00:08:34
and and I've moved on with with another chapter you you you're such a positive
00:08:38
guy but there must have been um times over the past year where I don't know you've been you're bitter
00:08:43
resentful depressed upset yeah but everything um it was tough because it did it you know I just
00:08:53
it it just all dried up and and it wasn't like I think I was doing a bad job
00:09:00
I thought the the shows I was involved in were doing well and then boom they just they weren't there and you get
00:09:07
thanks thanks for your time and and good luck and I don't I don't like not having
00:09:13
my path mapped down front of me I like to see it and all of a sudden it was you know there was what am I doing where am
00:09:19
I going and and I think the frustration was the fact that I felt that I was doing a good job it's not like I was
00:09:26
failing at at any of those gigs um certain things commercial realities transpired I guess and boom you're out
00:09:33
on your ass um I I I I I did have contact with Mike King from IM ho just couple of things couple of texts and he
00:09:42
was fantastic he is so good at checking in on people eh yeah and and it was just
00:09:47
nice to know there's someone there who lives in that space who cares about other people and you know what they
00:09:52
might be going through and it was just nice to connect with someone I wouldn't
00:09:55
say that I descended into any level of depression um but it it was it was just tough because I just felt like what had
00:10:03
happened while I understand it happens in the industry that we've been involved
00:10:07
and it just felt a little unfair at the time and so very sudden and so very quick um it just took a bit to get my
00:10:15
head around but really I I absolutely blessed and lucky that um another opportunity um came around and an
00:10:23
opportunity that I mean I I would love to be doing what I'm doing now but I thought that boat had sailed at my age I
00:10:30
was never going to pick up another you know another proper career and like I'm
00:10:36
in you know well and truly in finance now I thought that boat had sailed and and all of a sudden realized it hadn't
00:10:44
and um you know I'm trying to grab onto with both hands oh no doubt you'll be successful
00:10:49
at it hope it seems like um you doing a bit of research for this podcast it's
00:10:54
like your your your superpower is hard work and working out what needs to be done and then and then just doing it and
00:11:01
it seems like you did that very well with um Cricut and then with broadcasting and I can't see how this is
00:11:06
going to be any different I reckon I'm working harder than I ever worked at University in an academic nature right
00:11:11
now I spent hours and hours studying um companies studying macroeconomics um you know reading
00:11:20
reports on this doing there's a lot of compliance a lot of testing a lot of examining a lot of accreditations to go
00:11:26
through um you can't you can't get through the early stages of of this career without actually accumulating
00:11:34
quite a lot of of knowledge um the industry demands it of you now um and and that's you know I am I'm having to
00:11:43
really I go home exhausted you know you go home from doing a radio show or a TV show time for the performance value of
00:11:49
it I go home exhausted um let your brain because you just be thinking so hard about stuff so
00:11:57
and and I I enjoy it yeah it's it's cool cuz there is that saying that you can't
00:12:02
teach an old dog new tricks but you actually can the old dog just needs to be prepared to learn the new tricks yeah
00:12:07
and the industry that I'm moving into there's no harm in being having life
00:12:11
experience because you're you it is relationship based people are trust in you with with their money with their
00:12:16
nest egg and yes they can trust it maybe to a a 25y old hot shot but I think if you can you know a lot of lot of clients
00:12:25
are a little bit older and if you can if you can resonate with them and connect with them on a personal level I think
00:12:30
this it's easier to get that element of trust that that you need and I I have to
00:12:37
go through a little bit of a rebanding thing because it's it's one thing
00:12:39
everyone sort of goes oh you'll be really good at this you'll be really good at this um because the connection I
00:12:45
have and what I've done in in life and that just puts that that pressure of expectation on my shoulders you know
00:12:49
wanting to live up to those expectations but I I know damn well that you know when
00:12:57
I've that that I I'm taking this seriously and I'm not Mark Richardson
00:13:02
the broadcaster any longer the blokey BR no I need people to to see me as as Mark
00:13:07
Richardson the bloke who understands the share markets and the debt markets and macroeconomics and you can trust me with
00:13:16
your coin because I'm not going to do something done with it yeah well if you
00:13:19
got a million dollars to invest you don't necessarily want to give it to the
00:13:23
guy that that said on live TV he took a dump off the back of a jet ski did you yeah sorry for pretty bad up yeah there
00:13:29
was a need at the time that had to be addressed and you know I knew I knew that the laws I knew I needed to be in a
00:13:35
certain depth and certain um um a certain distance offshore so there was a that was meticulous yeah and
00:13:44
and thought that went into it to make sure that I didn't um I didn't break any
00:13:48
compliance regulations oh good on you I um we'll we'll double back around we'll
00:13:53
go we'll go back and talk about Cricket a little bit and then um maybe move forward with the career stuff as well um
00:13:58
there won't be any uh deep or insightful cricket stuff here because I know very
00:14:02
little about it but I have done some research so your nicknames um there's riger yeah short for riger Morse yeah
00:14:09
why is that because I have the Speed and Agility of a dead person pretty much stiff in
00:14:17
agile um hopeless Fielder and it was Shane bond in about mid 90s so this is going back to when I was actually quite
00:14:23
a young man as well uh he nicknamed me rig mortis cuz he just thought I just looked like an old
00:14:29
stff you're you're very self-deprecating though like in in your book as well
00:14:33
which I've got a copy of thinking negatively um like you you downplayed just how good you
00:14:39
were and and what what you did don't you think when I look back I'm really proud
00:14:44
of what I check yeah yeah yeah you know and the fact that I took some of the world's best Bowlers on and
00:14:49
succeeded um I was disappointed but I let myself down on Australia and and that that irks me but yeah like I'm
00:14:56
pretty proud when I look back in my Cricket career and what I achieved I'm I'm pretty damn proud um it's just not
00:15:02
it's just not New Zealand it's just not accepted in New Zealand for me to go
00:15:06
like I I would say it on ear oh it was brilliant leg absolute Legend one of possibly New Zealand's greatest ever
00:15:12
open better but people know I'm saying that self depr you know what is it self self depreciating one of and
00:15:22
another one you name is donut uh yeah Kenzie gave that to me uh so this Chris Ken so yeah was a teammate
00:15:29
of yours and his dad Lance was one of your coaches yeah yeah so this was this was this that goes right back that's a
00:15:35
good one to find actually where'd you find that name in the forward of your book oh okay I think he gave that to me
00:15:39
in the under 19s and I was always a little bit younger in those some of those sides Kenzie was a bit older and I
00:15:45
was a typical stupid kid just dumb so donut was like there's there's nothing
00:15:50
in the middle yeah which is fair enough in those days you know and and he I noticed he calls you Richie yeah that
00:15:57
does anyone call you Richie no you'd have to go back people call me Richie goes right back to the early years and
00:16:03
then that more often too well then became rigger um and a lot of people in the street call me rer and I I sort of
00:16:08
like it see it as a term of D and I like the fact that so just fans or punters um
00:16:14
feel they have the right to call me by my nickname which I find is um it it's
00:16:19
it's quite humbling that you know they they feel that they can do that yeah you
00:16:24
know oh it's a massive tomb of endearment yeah um but I mean the reality is like you you weren't that
00:16:29
slow um and then you you started running like you and I bonded over some running
00:16:33
chats you you got quite good with your marathons like just you never broke three hours but you're on the sort of
00:16:38
cusp I had the you know when you do your because I could do I did a one 121 for a
00:16:43
half which is quick 121 yeah that's like 3 minute 50k Pace or you do if you do a
00:16:48
121 you should have the fitness to be able to run a sub you took him probably 250 sort of there but I would cramp
00:16:55
would get me I I had some struct ual issues I think and um and I I would get to about the 38k mark and Kaboom I'd be
00:17:04
running my 415 Pace um and the minute it started to feel tough and you had to work uh I would just I would cramp and
00:17:13
that that would be and I just hobble back for I think about 305 was about the best I did just watch those minutes
00:17:19
slipping away yeah but when it came to the sprinting like and being slow I I always felt I could get over
00:17:26
100 okay but but Cricket is a about running short distances and bending down and being able to move and pick up balls
00:17:33
and swoop and I couldn't do that I literally had to run over to the ball and they had a step ladder to climb down
00:17:38
to pick it up just didn't just didn't have that that agility you oh yeah you
00:17:41
see you mentioned the cramp thing in um in the the um perspective of marathon running before um there's that famous
00:17:48
clip online of of you you cramping and when you're on Crow go wild it was played like every other night um how's
00:17:54
that is that hilarious or embarrassing I still laugh at it do you I I mean it was so painful yeah yeah
00:18:01
I've had CR before it's it's excruciating it feels like you're being
00:18:04
shot in that body part oh good God it was it was horrendous and I was so dehydrated cuz I had the old Del belly
00:18:12
going into that test so I was pretty dehydrated and you know no one notices the score tick about 230 something for
00:18:18
one so I've been out there for quite some time and and it just yeah like my body was stuff going into it so it just
00:18:25
it just shut down I could cramp playe that shot was the only shot I could play to get runs at that point I'm in the 90s
00:18:31
I to get to 100 and and I was cramping and when I'd stretch my C out i' I'd
00:18:37
cramping my quads so was literally lying there sort of in a neutral position which doesn't really stop the pain and I
00:18:44
couldn't I just stretch hamy out quad would go start to sort of bend the quad
00:18:48
hamy would go again it was just horrendous and then not long after that when I got into the marathons I I had
00:18:54
the same same sort of issues with the cramp I'd go my hammies and I can remember coming up the Finish shoot at
00:19:00
Victoria Park here and the ground announcer or the announcer is you know calling people in go comes Mar sort of
00:19:07
yeah I remember don't cramp rer and then boom I got this massive massive out of
00:19:13
cramp I'd be dealing with it for the last couple of Cs and he's go ah there
00:19:17
he is yeah haming it up and I I'm not haming it up I'm I'm actually c i he
00:19:21
thought you were doing at Mark richon par I actually stumbled across the line and had to be carried from the from the
00:19:27
line to out the end of the shoot by John's ambulance that's humiliating there's a lot of people may shoot at the
00:19:33
Finish Line yeah I just thought people were thinking oh what a dick look at him haming up the cramp thing but it was it
00:19:39
was absolutely legit oh that's amazing so so you you were um playing Cricket uh
00:19:45
you were a bowler mhm um then what happened do you I know you're you're into your golf uh do are you familiar
00:19:52
with the Ian Baker Finch story well he he should have lost his golf didn't he
00:19:57
yeah completely so Australian guy really really good and then just like lost lost
00:20:00
his game completely and then became a commentator was that the same with you and bowling from what I was good bowler
00:20:06
I was sort of New Zealand under the 19s and then Oakland As a left arm spinner and then Oto as a left arm spinner but
00:20:11
when I went to Oto I started to lose it how what do what do you mean exactly how
00:20:15
do you explain that to a non- cricketer how and and in your own mind you must have still been bowling okay no i' bow I
00:20:22
was awful and it started out like as was a good youth bowler but you you always got like a B of loish ball Le over but
00:20:30
at youth Cricket it didn't really hurt you and then I started playing men's
00:20:34
cricket and I started playing for Auckland I was still very young I was about 18 and that that loose ball
00:20:40
because good cricketers now you're balling to good batters and they would they'd be able to sit and defend on your
00:20:45
good balls and then You' Bowl them a bad ball and they did it for four and that
00:20:48
was that was too many runs in an over and I started to fear bowling that bad ball so so you worry rather than rather
00:20:56
than running and going I'm going to bowl a good ball to show you how good I am
00:20:59
I'm going to rip it I'd be running and going just get this on the spot just get
00:21:02
on the spot so now now the the the worry of bowling a bad ball is now front of your mind as opposed to it's not in your
00:21:09
mind and so so very quickly that takes it from one bad ball to two bad balls to Three B balls to I an over crap which is
00:21:18
what I was bowling and that was that and I I could Bowl on the Nets with no fear
00:21:23
of consequence I'd Bowl quite nicely but get to a game n just St was it just an overthinking thing I
00:21:30
think for me I think that's how my brain works yeah I think batting just worked
00:21:34
better for me in that regard um the way that my mind worked this is the the interesting thing so so you're a bowler
00:21:41
you that all happens you lose your confidence but at that point you're you're like a number 10 batsman which
00:21:47
means like you're you're the shittest batter in the team one of the worst yeah
00:21:52
so so then you go and you sort of reinvent yourself as a as a batsman and you end up making the New Zealand team
00:21:57
at 29 kind of from from what I can GA it sounds like you sort of forced your way
00:22:01
in it's like you weren't on anyone's radar and but they just it got to the
00:22:05
point where you were so good they couldn't ignore you I could always betat a
00:22:08
little and but you know not great a little bit scared of the ball no real discipline really didn't have a batting
00:22:15
mentality when I when the it happened through Club Cricket I could still bow well at Club Cricket I still could you
00:22:20
know be in the team and I started to work my way up in in the um in the club team batting and then I ended up sort of
00:22:27
batting it three for the club and scoring some runs and really enjoying it and actually wasn't worried about
00:22:33
playing for a Target at this time was just enjoying playing the sport that I supposedly was meant to love and so
00:22:40
spending a bit more time getting a bit more interested in in um in batting got a few more runs then got into the otago
00:22:47
second 11 but they picked me as a bowler and I was being quite shitty about the whole thing like I'm not a
00:22:55
bowler any long and and I B it at 8 or something like that and we we were playing against
00:23:01
um uh we were playing against canb B and can a I think in those days you were allowed to call it B and and we were out
00:23:09
of the game and I managed I bet at eight I managed to get through to about 50 and
00:23:13
but we we we were dead and we ended up needing 33 off the final over to win and I hit five Sixers and a three and one
00:23:22
and won the game and it no way it's like some Jimmy Nishan big bash stuff 33 off
00:23:28
the last over so five in a row and then I Nick the last one which I should have for six as well nicked the last one down
00:23:35
down to Third Man and we ran three and won the game and that got me noticed and that actually got me it got me a game in
00:23:40
the in the Oto side actually they say you know Perhaps Perhaps rig a campat a bit here but that's that's not what
00:23:49
that's not the sort of batsman you were like you a slow boring no I started out
00:23:54
very a shot maker with Oto so I worked my way into Oto side and in fact the first 100 I ever got in any form of
00:24:00
cricket was in a first class game of cricket and it wasn't even meant to be at in the team we an academic called
00:24:06
James Allen whose graduation was at the time that we were going to play uh Central districts and um and so he
00:24:14
pulled out late doors because graduation was more important than playing crw for
00:24:17
tago and um and so I got called into the side and when I got 100 and never bat in
00:24:24
at five and and never never look back but I was a stroke player I used to play a lot of lot of lot of shots and um and
00:24:31
but I I realized I had to find a way to go from averaging 30 in both one day as and and four days to having a couple of
00:24:38
Seasons where I averaged in the 60s or 70s and I started to realize I needed to actually sh a bit of the the aggressive
00:24:45
intent and bring it back and and and that just went you know that that I just refined that skill and I just worked out
00:24:53
that surviving was my best way of succeeding they're 33 off one over just I'm sorry I
00:25:00
just can't get past that I um I I looked at a lot of stuff on um YouTube prior to
00:25:05
you coming around today does that does footage of that exist anywhere no it was it was a
00:25:11
Geraldine Gerald the main or wherever why is why is there not not not a bit KN on Mark Richardson story that's
00:25:17
outstanding I guess it was just playing for theago second 11 that doesn't really
00:25:21
get any any sort of coverage but that was that was the real turning point for me just an over of of just whacking it
00:25:30
turned my career around just one of those things may maybe I I would have continued to score runs and you know I
00:25:35
would have found myself there eventually um but no that that freakish sort of act
00:25:40
really sort of turned everything around for me yeah and um I've heard you say
00:25:45
you're Everest that like the highlight of your career is getting that centry at
00:25:48
Lords yeah so um first inning us you got 93 and then the second Innings you got 101 how how how are you how do you feel
00:25:56
when you get out at 9 3 and I wasn't out too I didn't knck it onto my pad out
00:26:02
yeah so but almost made it almost easier go been you know I mean Shadle over here
00:26:07
so um I was just pleased I'd scored runs you know I'd gone there and I'd got 93
00:26:10
in the first Innings at at Lords and I was like well I'd actually done something significant and then all I
00:26:16
thought in the second innings was okay just back it up with a reasonable total so because I used to hate getting a
00:26:21
decent score and then almost taking that for granted look bad if you went out and
00:26:25
got a poor second Innings score so I just sort of gried my teeth and thought we'll just see how many I can get in the
00:26:30
second Innings and then it just got closer and closer and closer to the point I was like [ __ ] maybe I can get
00:26:36
100 and and I did yeah yeah that's amazing so how how do you get out on on 101 I in your book you talk about Steven
00:26:45
Fleming saying to you um don't don't give up on yourself did you give up on
00:26:49
yourself after getting a 100 yeah I I sort of did and and it's Cricket is a great a great game because it always
00:26:57
beat you up if you allow to beat you up and I can remember I so I got this 100 and it was the achievement of my life
00:27:04
and it was just before tea and I went in at tea not out and just all the adrenaline drained from me and when I
00:27:13
went out to bat after tea I couldn't get myself up to start again it was just
00:27:20
such a a a huge achievement for myself you know and and I needed to pick myself up cuz I only needed a bat front of that
00:27:27
half an hour to an hour and we probably would have bettered us our way to Safety
00:27:31
in the game and being in totally dominant I got out playing a very loose shot because I just wasn't there
00:27:37
mentally and then the English bowling attack which was a good attack actually they just they rolled out our middle and
00:27:43
tail from there and we ended up losing the test and and so I sort of go greatest moment in my life but also a
00:27:50
moment in which I arguably let my team down and L that's a terrible way I'm
00:27:55
looking at it come on 24 runs over two innings you but your it's your day it's
00:28:00
your game and you've got to make the most of it and you you know this is what
00:28:04
I love about Kan Williamson and I really believe him he's so frustrating to interview because he's just played one
00:28:08
of the greatest hundreds you ever seen your life and and you go and talk to him and set a record here and there and it's
00:28:13
like the situation of the game and and he'll never talk about anyone he'll
00:28:16
never talk about himself he always talks about the situation of the game and and
00:28:20
I think the actual number that he walks away with is is totally nutly irrelevant
00:28:25
to what was required in the situation of the game what what makes gets him out of bed in
00:28:29
the morning to play cricket is what I need to do for my team today in this game of cricket um so personal
00:28:35
achievements on the back burner yeah yeah so it's always been a sweet when you get you know I I still the highlight
00:28:41
of my life get 100 of Lords but then I dig a bit deeper and it's like well you
00:28:45
should have got 130 140 and you wouldn't have lost the game but so you get 100 at
00:28:50
Lords that means um Lords by the way the I don't want to patronize anyone but
00:28:53
like the the home of cricket right a spiritual home of cricket yeah so um you get your name on an honors board
00:29:00
there um is there a ceremony or anything what happens yeah your name goes up on the board and the and the visitors
00:29:07
changing shed they just put it up um they put it up on tape because they can't get an engrave it I've actually
00:29:13
never seen it engraved I've never been oh have you not you're not commentated
00:29:16
there so you've never seen I've never never seen my name on on the honors
00:29:19
board actually engraved in there how was that be i' think I'd be quite emotional
00:29:24
to tell you the truth because it was such a it's such a big thing um for the
00:29:28
older you get the more emotional that moment will I think you value yeah you value what what you did I mean your your
00:29:36
career becomes a half hours highlights package um you know you tend to remember the good stuff um but there some bad
00:29:43
stuff that you know irks me a little bit what's the bad stuff oh bad stuff was
00:29:48
how I performed in Australia okay so yeah so this um yeah this is when you decided to retire yeah just after this
00:29:54
so you left the game on your own tombs what what what happened I mean yeah I I can't remember it at all I think was it
00:30:02
real bad or is it just bad in your own after England I'd reached a pinnacle for
00:30:06
myself and I'd had a great series and then but I I was also I didn't want to
00:30:11
be me any longer I didn't want to be that St there was no fun in it and I wanted to actually have a bit more fun
00:30:18
and enjoy the art of batting a bit more and play a few more shots and be able to
00:30:21
put a bit more pressure I would have got more hundreds had I been more attacking
00:30:25
because I wouldn't have had to f so many balls and I would have put more pressure
00:30:29
on Bowlers and there was times in Innings where I could have actually played aggressively but I pulled myself
00:30:34
back and I really it was there was no fun in that and then I went I went to Bangladesh and thought right well I'm
00:30:40
going to smash Bangladesh and I didn't I kned out a couple of times badly and uh
00:30:46
and then I went to Australia and I was like you know what all I can do is just defend against these guys and hang in
00:30:51
there um I didn't have the skills to take them on aggressively and I just thought you know what I just don't want
00:30:57
to be here and Australia in Australia against that Australian bowling attack is no place to be when you don't want to
00:31:03
be there and and I just got SP out but it was even the series before that no one um I was at the top of my game and I
00:31:12
did I scored some runs against Australia I got good starts got couple of 30s and
00:31:17
a and a 50 and I didn't let myself actually play the cricket against them that I should have I should have got a
00:31:24
at least a big hund on that tour in those conditions because I didn't believe I could do it
00:31:29
against Australia I'd pest still it because this was the this was the this was you know um this is The Proving
00:31:35
Grounds for New Zealand cricketers Australia because we grew up watching Australia from cricket it's great
00:31:39
viewing hours or people my age love the channel n commentary team the legends of
00:31:45
commentary yeah in the 12th man tapes and and here we are it's us doing it now
00:31:50
and and the same sort of the same commentary team Tony Greg and and and Bill lry and and Richie BAU and the
00:31:56
comment on me and I I just didn't realize I actually belonged there and and could dominate the the greatest
00:32:04
compliment I've ever been paid in the game of cricket was once I stopped playing cricket and rookie pontin who um
00:32:11
still frightens me to this day and intimidates me to this day we're at the New Zealand Golf
00:32:16
Open and someone came up to me and started talking and it was about my Cricket or something like that and and
00:32:22
rookie was standing close by putting on the green and and I'd never really had
00:32:27
much to do with Rook he still intimidated me when I when I do the toss as a broadcas my hand was shake the
00:32:32
microphone was Shake he intimidated me that much wow and um and I didn't think
00:32:37
he really thought much of me as as as a cricketer because he had never done that
00:32:39
well in Australia and he said to this guy said no he said he said this guy could really play he just didn't let
00:32:46
himself play and that was possibly coming from Ricky Pony that was the greatest compliment paid to me in you
00:32:52
know I needly I needly started crying on the bloody py at the Hills do you do do you suffer
00:32:58
imposter syndrome do you think maybe yeah maybe maybe a little maybe a little yeah yeah so does um that doesn't keep
00:33:07
you awake at night anymore does it Australia does my performance in Australia actually yes I I still I still
00:33:13
um you still have regrets about that yeah still a lot of so how many years ago I think I carried it to the to the
00:33:19
time I it's 20 years ago now but I'll still but you're not thinking about it
00:33:23
daily sometimes months I I it really hurs me because I let myself down and I shouldn't have and that yeah in a
00:33:32
professional sense and that really pissed me off yeah unreal Shane Cameron on the
00:33:38
podcast and he talked about that um that horrible beating he got from David T and
00:33:43
he said it was seven years he reckons before uh he realized one day that he hadn't thought about it so seven years
00:33:50
just was on his mind but you you being bullied by Australia how many years like 20 years ago oh look at it ruins my
00:33:57
enjoyment of watching Australia play and watching the cricket from Australia cuz
00:34:02
it's like you just let yourself sit down so so badly yeah oh um oh yeah one thing
00:34:09
I forgot to to mention so so at Lords when you're out there getting 101 your
00:34:12
wife Mary's there and she's um she meets MC Jagger yeah she's hob with MC Jagger
00:34:17
where about like in a corporate box or something yeah I think he was in the same box as as the Wags um yeah we got a
00:34:24
photo of photo of MC Jagger and and my wife was quite a highlight for her she was pissed off when I was retired cuz
00:34:29
she just got used to the wag lifestyle and and like and I came home one day and just said I've honey I've
00:34:36
retired and I was like you didn't run back past me she just starting to enjoy
00:34:41
it did did you have any um any Recollections of the the MC Jer moment or was it just like a literally a photo
00:34:47
opportunity classic classic cuz he was with them all day yes it's classic like
00:34:52
he's tiny he's a funny little fellow but he was really nice nice and personable
00:34:57
and loves his Crick eh yeah yeah that was quite a highlight for her I think oh another highlight um you you had an
00:35:04
opening partnership with Lou Vincent which um remains to this day like one of the one of the best opening Partnerships
00:35:10
ever didn't you like could be I might I think 232 runs or something yeah I think
00:35:14
that would that was the one in which I cramped the game in India and mahale right yeah me and Louie put on a big
00:35:19
total there Lou was great great to bet with I like I like betting with those sort of hyper sort of um because they
00:35:27
they bring a bit more out of me as well and I used to bet quite quite well with them he was fun to watch as a Fielder as
00:35:33
well it was really exciting and also when you when you when you have a guy to that who's essentially nuts you know
00:35:38
personality wise fun enthusiastic nuts and and what way just like just really enthusiastic
00:35:45
Energizer Bunny Energizer Bunny they they're good mid pitch as well um you know I either like batting with guys who
00:35:53
were very light in the middle right and you know we're going to do this and we're going to you know and and got very
00:35:58
technical and we coached each other through or like that with guys who just you just you didn't know what they were
00:36:03
going to say when you sort of came together at the end of the end of the over yeah so you yeah so um did you re
00:36:10
you reach out to him or Ken when all the match fixing stuff goes down uh uh L I I text the other day actually I
00:36:18
was really stoked for that he his lifetime B I think that was really unfair he he came clean he's one of the
00:36:24
very very few who said yeah it was me pissed up sorry been wrong and they tried to make an example of some of that
00:36:30
I don't think they needed to make an example out of game a lifetime band so I'm really pleased that they've um
00:36:36
they've overturned that and Louie because he's a nice guy and and he I think he had a few issues you know
00:36:42
mentally at that time and I think he was taken advantage of um Chris I came to my
00:36:48
wedding I'd call him a mate um drift we drifted apart and um haven't really
00:36:54
really stayed in touch I I mean I I feel sad for what's happened to him and boy
00:36:59
you know he was a guy big strapping Larger than Life super human um it just shows how fragile we all are and once
00:37:09
once you wander down snipers alley you don't know what they do you do you follow him on Instagram are you on
00:37:13
Instagram at all no I'm not a social media type guy I sort of I've always
00:37:17
thought social media is a cancer on society so I'm stay away it is but he's
00:37:22
he shares a lot of his um progression and he's making great progress I like I
00:37:26
wish in the you know but I just I just drifted drifted apart really I it sorry it um I
00:37:34
I think there was you know to be perfectly honest I can remember you rung me out one day after I was doing a show
00:37:39
with Andrew Mulligan on radio sport and it was a fun show and it was round match
00:37:43
fix scene and I was we were running an amnesty and you had to ring us up and tell us how you cheated and and Sport
00:37:50
and and then I was like the judge and I was going to hand down your your your penalty or you know what you had to do
00:37:56
and it was it was quite a fun little sequ and he rung me up um afterwards I was driving home and he sort of sort of
00:38:02
tried to he just tried to bully me into a bit of Silence that he didn't need to
00:38:06
do and I T to be the type of person that just goes you know what I'm wiping my
00:38:10
hands you know yeah I mean on probability he's probably guilty but I mean with what
00:38:17
he's been through now with the uh you the disability and the rehab it kind of
00:38:21
puts it into perspective and and look no one whether he's guilty or not and sort
00:38:26
of stayed away from that I don't want to judge I've never been privy to you know
00:38:30
any the any of the real genuine information and he's always denied it vly um he no one wanted to win more when I
00:38:41
was playing for New Zealand and I was in the same teams as him no one wanted to win more at that point in time than
00:38:47
Chris K and if he was involved in anything it was in games that that wasn't Internationals and and you know
00:38:56
it was in games that I probably had little respect for anyway um and saying that you know you're still playing Sport
00:39:03
and corruption's Corruption and you know so um but the Chris kenz IU desperately
00:39:08
wanted to win cricket games for New Zealand to the point that you know at times he could get a little bit harsh on
00:39:13
us who weren't performing that's is that right that's interesting I've been go going to um
00:39:20
I've been reading a book um called Relentless by um this guy who's a personal trainer and mental mental
00:39:25
skills coach of um some of the best NBA players ever Jordan Kobe LeBron and he says the same sort of thing about them
00:39:32
like um like Jordan was just like an absolute [ __ ] to some of his teammates yeah like there was some Australian dude
00:39:38
at the Chicago balls and um Scotty Pin said to him oh you need we need you bring your aame today and Jordan said
00:39:44
aame just bring a game can you imagine how awful that would be hearing that from MJ you got
00:39:51
you got to like it's a tough environment professional sport and you you you've
00:39:56
got got to you will not succeed at the international level or at a high level of sport if you're not prepared to play
00:40:03
if you can't get the job done uncomfortable uh and so you got to accept the nerves and anxiety and the
00:40:08
self-doubt is there and you got to find a way overcoming it and every now and then I think someone does need a bit of
00:40:14
a hurry up is like you're giving into yourself you're a better player than
00:40:17
this you need to you need to to H I know it's triggers people but you need to
00:40:22
harden the hell up this is not a fun environment and every now and then you need someone to give you that you know
00:40:28
don't you know look around these guys need you perform don't let them down
00:40:31
through being weak yeah and and sometimes you need that and you know Kenzie would dish that out did he ever
00:40:37
give you a memorable spray I could remember a couple of of sprays for not you know mainly it was if I'd given if
00:40:44
I'd let myself down you know um but surely at that point you already know you've let yourself down yeah you beat
00:40:51
yourself up probably someone else to beat you up you know I I used to really take quite a I I just always thought
00:40:57
when you were playing for your country there was no excuse for playing a bad shot because you are there's so many
00:41:05
more eyes on you and you are representing not only yourself but you're representing the the cricket fans
00:41:12
and followers in your country they'd love to be out there doing it so you don't take the piss you don't you don't
00:41:17
take it lightly you don't take it for granted and I always felt there was no
00:41:21
excuses for playing a weak shot you were going to play them from time to time but
00:41:26
there was no wasn't just your career you you you know you're playing for New
00:41:30
Zealand well what's New Zealand New Zealand's 5 million people when you when you [ __ ] up um or
00:41:36
you had a cheap record or got out on with a dumb shot how were you after that I had Susie baates on the podcast and
00:41:42
she she said she said she' go to the toilet and like have a subtle cry without the team knowing the South
00:41:49
loathing the anger and the frustration um and and and and the you know you'd walk off and I'd think right
00:41:56
well that's it that's the last shot you have play for New Zealand is it you know
00:41:59
oh cuz going be dumped and then yeah and then like I can remember one in one game
00:42:06
climbing underneath the got I got out early climbed underneath the you know you know the classic seats that go
00:42:13
around the outside of a changing [ __ ] I literally just just took my just what I
00:42:18
took take anything off climbed underneath the seats and stayed there for two sessions didn't move just just
00:42:24
so pissed off with myself just didn't want to talk to anyone just didn't
00:42:27
didn't want to exist in that moment probably a little unhealthy some guys could just like some guys just take the
00:42:34
pads off and bang and the players you know they get over in five minutes and that and and that's not a criticism of
00:42:40
them it's just that's how they they needed to get over it if they were going
00:42:44
to be able to go out and bet with confidence where was me I needed to beat myself up for as long as it took to to
00:42:50
go out there and then apply myself again but it seem seems like you've always
00:42:52
been like that like in the um the the better the the at the beginning of your book that Chris kin wrote like he talks
00:42:58
about you as a bowler apparently you sledged yourself harder than any other people you were you were bowling to
00:43:04
probably did yeah yeah just is this just is this just your personality were you were you like this with the media career
00:43:10
as well like if you I would get really down if they had a bad show yeah yeah probably not as much as cricket and I
00:43:16
was always told Martin Crow when I when I started commentary he said please don't please don't broadcast tell you
00:43:23
about it his advice take some risks take some chances take some risks Martin sneden once said to me um my only advice
00:43:31
to you this is post Cricket he said take take a risk take some take some risks um
00:43:36
so I was prepared to take risks and broadcasting and I I tried to make sure I enjoyed my broadcasting but if I had a
00:43:42
bad show and stuff stuff things up I'd chew on that for days without you know without doubt oh
00:43:49
my God I think it's just your character type right that's who you are um sh you
00:43:54
dropped some great names then sneden and Crow there's there's another name I want
00:43:57
to drop Shane War um you're one of the you're one of the only people that I've
00:44:01
heard like talk about Shane war and a and I I really respect you for doing this you haven't um Rewritten history
00:44:08
like it' be easy after he dies to say oh YY and Shane we were this or we were
00:44:12
that but um you guys famously just did not like each other each other's guts
00:44:17
and I wear that as a badge of honor because I was I was living R for in as he lives R for in my head and uh and I
00:44:25
think for long time I was cuz he would still mentioned me like years later he'
00:44:29
been interviews and someone would text me and go he War he just said something about you on the X show for like in what
00:44:35
cont after reti yeah after we retired I think we just did not like each other was was that because um and I thought
00:44:43
well for a start I thought why are you spending any time worrying about what you think about me you know I'm not even
00:44:51
in your cricketing Hemisphere and yet he did not like me and I did not like him but when he passed away I was quite sad
00:45:01
because you talk to so many people in the game who knew wary they loved him he was a lovable Rogue and I think if you
00:45:08
were in his good books he would do anything for you and he was a great man to be around I never saw that and I
00:45:13
never ever got an opportunity because our our our pars did cross post Cricket um I never got an opportunity to see the
00:45:21
shame war that everyone loved I just saw this bloke that that I resent that cross
00:45:26
the line with me who didn't like me and I didn't like him so who who didn't like
00:45:31
the other one did he not like you so you're like well [ __ ] you I don't like
00:45:34
you either or it feels like there was almost like an un unspoken feud between you two yeah I think I might have said
00:45:41
something or looked the wrong way at some point and is it because you caught him out on 99 no it was before that
00:45:46
right okay before that yeah yeah and he and then and then he he crossed the line
00:45:53
I think I you know this this this competitive and there gamesmanship and there sledging and then there's
00:45:59
just I think crossing the line of human decency and times out on the field I think he crossed that with me um like
00:46:07
can you remember specifics oh just just things you know just things and just going on and on and on and and
00:46:14
um what things you don't want to share or oh it's just hard to come up with
00:46:18
specifics but just yeah um to one point I can remember even flim I was betting with flim no I was running the drinks
00:46:26
out I wasn't even playing I was running the drinks out and fle was batting and
00:46:31
War just W pass and just started up until the point that fle actually who really got on brilliantly with Shane
00:46:36
they were friends FL Shane that's gone a bit far um yeah I they just yeah and you
00:46:43
know like just nasty was he nasty to you we're all competitive people um but
00:46:50
we're all people as well and you know just because you're you're a certain level of cricket above someone
00:46:59
else doesn't make you a better person than them and I think we all have to be
00:47:03
prepared to to interact on a personal level and you can't hide behind the fact
00:47:08
that it was out there in the middle and then we all share a bear and have a laugh about it um if you've gone too
00:47:15
far and and with me he he he went too far and and so we didn't get on do you
00:47:21
have to get on with everyone no no no well you don't like everyone you can't
00:47:25
sad that I never I never got to know the Shane that everyone loved CU I had Ryan
00:47:31
Fox on the podcast and they they were sort of friends and he said Shane wasn't
00:47:35
much of a drinker hated drugs but when he did get on the drink it was like like Jagger bombs
00:47:41
or this is the most shame War thing I think shame is going to do something does it properly yeah Yer bombs or Red
00:47:47
Bull vodka something really awful like that he's he's in my top five cricketers
00:47:51
ever he he was a just a genius he really was well he obviously had a respect for
00:47:55
you that must be where the I did all right against him in the I I scored some runs
00:48:00
against him in some warm-up games uh and some games in England when I was playing
00:48:03
for different teams and initially I played them quite well um but yeah there was just a there was just something
00:48:11
there well because of that relationship that must have been so satisfying catching him out on 99 runs oh yeah so
00:48:17
he he he died without a test with a without a t no and I I like take this the right way I love that and that's how
00:48:24
Cricket should be Cricket should always beat you in some way form so um the great the great and and I think that um
00:48:33
s da is the greatest sports person ever because I don't think anyone has dominated their so Don Bradman and non
00:48:39
Cricket followers no one has has ever dominated their game or their sport to the same level that he dominated when he
00:48:46
was playing and so he averaged 99 over over Korea the closest anyone's got to
00:48:52
that is about 60 or something like that there a 40 run difference M um and you know an amazing the the world's greats
00:49:02
are in the 50s 55 he was 99 over a decent career I think not you know it's never
00:49:08
going to be schumach um you know Kelly Slater Tiger Tiger they've never dominated their sport to the degree that
00:49:16
that he did um and he he needed four runs to average a 100 and he got a duck average 99
00:49:26
couldn't average 100 and his finals Shane War really good batter Genius of the game of cricket um deserved 100
00:49:34
never got a 100 so in some way shape or form the game beats you you don't you
00:49:38
don't clock the game and so I sort of quite like that but the fact that it had
00:49:42
to be you like his Nemesis in a way to catch him out on 99 I remember it too cuz I just felt he's going to whack one
00:49:49
out here he's gonna whack one out here and he did uh and I just remember thinking when the ball went up
00:49:56
I think the first thing that came to my mind was like was oh you absolute [ __ ] because I have got to catch this
00:50:03
now and was like you could just this this this ball as it's coming towards you it should be getting bigger it was
00:50:10
getting smaller I reckon just it was just the pressure of the moment everyone knew how significant that moment was and
00:50:17
yeah yeah managed to catch it and then you bowed at the crowd that was was that a spontaneous thing you you do then you
00:50:23
you're happy about that or you regret it I was standing I was I was standing in
00:50:27
front of the Rowdy part of the the Wacker and and you know you you're taking so much crap so I just felt the
00:50:32
most appropriate thing to do was take a bow oh sh it's lucky you wen't assassinated that day but the media
00:50:38
afterwards actually asked me oh did you consider maybe dropping it because you know Shane deserves to get a test 100
00:50:44
and they was they were actually genuine with their questions I thought for God's
00:50:48
sake go absolutely not yeah sport yeah but he stoked of course I didn't want to
00:50:54
drop it let you let him get 100 okay so um so then you make the transition from um Cricket to uh to Media so you you
00:51:01
retire on your own terms it seems like it was a well played strategic move um in your own words you thought if you end
00:51:08
up getting dropped then you'll just be another dropped cricketer and you have
00:51:11
no worth in the media so you sort of leave on your own terms and then you get into media um in terms of like
00:51:17
transferable skills like from professional sport like Cricket into media was there
00:51:22
any what what did you take performance I think the fact when you know when you walk into that Arena um you you perform
00:51:29
it's a performance game without a doubt broadcasting um it's a magnification
00:51:34
yourself it's it's the red light goes on the Umpire sees play and you got to
00:51:38
perform and it's nervous there you you get nervous and you've got to overcome
00:51:43
those that the anxiety and I think the other thing is you know you're always
00:51:46
trying to get better and improve and you are like that with sports so without a doubt there is some there's some Sim
00:51:52
similarities and you're right I got out of the game slightly early than I should
00:51:55
have basically because you know sell high so yeah some for for B chant there yeah my my stocks were my stocks were up
00:52:05
there and I needed to sell I needed to cash them in you know yeah now one of the um yeah one of the most successful
00:52:10
things you've done I think is the block uh like a reality show that's just gone
00:52:14
chugged on like a juggernaut year after year you you were there since day one AA
00:52:17
Ben and Libby yeah day one it's it's it's an incredible incredible Innings to
00:52:22
use a cricket term so Julie Christie cast you for that yeah and you came on her radar after that sketch you did with
00:52:30
Steven Fleming I think she was AOS wild it was the sketch with Steven fing that got me
00:52:36
the Kos Wild G right and so so so um yeah what was that let's focus on that for a little bit so it's um it was it
00:52:43
was like a stitch up yes but no one realized it was a stitch up at the time the acting is phenomenal like Steven
00:52:48
Fleming well I don't think it is acting that's the thing because we've all seen
00:52:52
him do as V Jitsu ads terrible I think there was an element of terrible yeah but he plays his part
00:53:00
perfectly like sprays at you and then walks away and then you you look like embarrassed like there's not a hint of a
00:53:06
grin or a a you know a twinkle in your eye like we've got some gold here so how
00:53:11
did that come I was thinking I was thinking this is it was this is awesome yeah yeah well that was I was doing the
00:53:17
cricket show so I was doing the comment train I was doing and and I was doing the the magazine Style Show and we
00:53:22
thought let's do a behind the scenes um story of on commentary D Day in commentary and it was like and I was
00:53:28
always looking for some a different angle and do something entertaining so I thought how about we do a story whereby
00:53:33
I'm the new boy in commentary which I was and I just everyone just gives me crap and it's really hard and and and
00:53:38
then thought what and then I was thinking what about if and then I go to interview the captain and he just lets
00:53:44
me have it and you know tells me I'm rubbish at it and this is this is my life in cometry now was the story so we
00:53:50
we we were there was the our camera op knew what was going on and our producing you and and Flame you because i' said
00:53:57
hey why don't you just you know tell me just just tea off on me and and the interview was real because it was
00:54:04
raining and there was an opportunity to do it and flam said he'd come out and do
00:54:07
an interview um for the actual broadcast so we we did this interview in the can and then he was meant to stop and then
00:54:15
sort of we'd almost Reaper and then he'd let me have it and we'd pick it up on
00:54:18
our INE camera um but he just thanks and then he just charged into it of course then all the camera just like that and
00:54:26
it's all the broadcast cameras and oure camera for the show flame does it you
00:54:31
should and then all of a sudden when it finishes we start laughing you should have seen the immediately Aon office was
00:54:35
just white oh my God can imagine this is this is a big fire to put out he' done
00:54:42
this so well and then I've gone bouncing into our commentary area where we we
00:54:46
wait and like the TV was off and they're all sitting there acting all like like
00:54:52
um you know they hadn't seen it apparently they seen it and they switched it off cuz they thought it was
00:54:55
for real as well like kiny and Smithy and all these other commentators and I've come bouncing and going did you see
00:55:01
that that's [ __ ] awesome didn't twe that it was you know it was it was a stitch up then later on
00:55:07
fim heard that he was was really good so he wanted to see and by this stage though our satellite links were up and
00:55:16
the the producer at the time ran it through the truck and of course it ran through the truck and now it's picked up
00:55:22
well while he watched it now it's been picked up all around the world so so was
00:55:26
someone on Willow TV in the West Indies is sitting there obviously maybe having to do a news story on the West Indies
00:55:31
New Zealand cricket game and thought God look at this I've got cold and then it
00:55:35
just went around the world that was amazing if if tech Tock was around at the time that would have been blind
00:55:41
upgive way that launched my media career something silly like that incredible cuz
00:55:46
Reit so who was putting together The Crowd Goes wow look that when that is just perfect for car goes well that's
00:55:51
that's the image I've got on my mind for the show that I'm going to do and so
00:55:54
said do you want want to be involved and then Julie was a kago wild fan I think and she thought nice to have someone you
00:56:01
know like that maybe maybe do the block so she got me the gig doing the block that's a strange thing about you
00:56:07
so there's this um incredibly playful side guy that doesn't mind taking the
00:56:11
piss out of himself will do anything for a laugh like um at your own expense or someone else's but then just the
00:56:17
seriously deep thinking self-loathing you know the the intense thinker I think quite a crazy Jer position I
00:56:28
plan things out I'm a planner so I just like to see a blueprint of where I'm
00:56:32
Hing yeah um but I also knew that one of one of my skills is just that is that self-deprecating sort of humor that I
00:56:41
have and and it resonates with new zealanders I guess that's just what I've
00:56:44
tried to do yeah so when I I take my broadcast I did take my broadcasting deedly serious but I took being a bit of
00:56:52
a clown deedly serious you know not not not a comedian I've never say that I was comedian but I I
00:57:00
knew that my point of difference was just to be someone that people could have a laugh they could laugh with me
00:57:07
laughing at myself yeah I think there's something really powerful in that as
00:57:11
well because not everyone has the ability to do that well some people I think you know I think you do have to
00:57:18
have a degree meal strength to be able to let others laugh at you you know it's
00:57:24
yeah if you're prepared to be laughed at you need to be fa um resilient yeah and
00:57:30
I think assured in your own shoes yeah jez um I've kept you so long we've
00:57:36
probably got time for one more story though we got time for One More Story let's talk about the uh juser doing
00:57:41
stuff this is probably the big you reflect on that now so this was on the am show yeah early years just prime
00:57:48
minister was there was it something about she she was the leader of the opposition at that point she just become
00:57:52
the leader of the opposition yeah so yes so what was the comment something about
00:57:56
um whether she planned to get pregnant or not it's not it's not like it got
00:58:01
screwed very very quickly it the night before she was on the project and I was on the project and GC marigan have been
00:58:07
I'm in an hour and about do I ask the question about becoming the leader of opposition you're going to get a lot
00:58:12
busier you've mentioned the media before that you want to have a family and so he
00:58:18
wasar and to ask the question to so very apologetically asked this question about
00:58:22
so what does this mean for your plans to have a family now and she answered it and then all and then of course it just
00:58:29
goes media grabs it and they want to just you know they run with it and was that a fair question and um and the
00:58:36
culture that existed you know at that time it still does probably um and so the question was was it a fair question
00:58:42
and she was sitting on the couch and and I was saying on the am show before she came on that I think yeah it's a fair
00:58:47
question I I just think that um you know your your your staff are your biggest asset uh and and if you know this
00:58:55
information you can plan for the future and it's a win-win so it wasn't saying
00:58:58
you use that against anyone she she then came on and and then she wanted to take
00:59:02
me to task for it and she and she did and I fought my case and when the um and it wasn't about her it was
00:59:12
about whether the question was legit for an employer to be able to ask it and my
00:59:16
rationale was always it is for the sake of information sharing and planning in advance not for getting rid of people
00:59:23
maybe quite to think that way um she said it was wasn't appropriate it was fair enough to ask her but not anyone
00:59:31
else and that's her that's her point point of view and many would agree with
00:59:34
that I fought my case cameras stopped rolling she got up and said great debate see you next week
00:59:40
and then and then the media just ran with it and it got morus ConEd I got sold down the road I Believe by my own
00:59:46
network and I'm sort of it was a great moment for me though that was the thing
00:59:51
what do you mean it was a great moment there must have been a must felt like you were walking through I was villain
00:59:56
number one but I was quite happily and and the other thing was what the media didn't never reported was there was
01:00:01
actually a lot of support for me as well but that wasn't part of the narrative no
01:00:05
no well it didn't the you've got a young female leader and a pale male State yeah
01:00:11
and and my argument and defense of myself is never ever seen the light of day you had to be watching it
01:00:18
live um and um and and people and and that's never really it's never been shown and but it
01:00:27
was a it was it put me on the it it it moved me into another sphere when it came to broadcasting and quite frankly
01:00:33
it was good for me yeah yeah it's I mean it's like Paul Henry there's there's
01:00:38
those memorable moments in broadcasting like Paul Henry with them the Sheila dick [ __ ] thing but when you're going
01:00:43
through that can't be like what was what was that that mon my kids you know I was
01:00:49
I was Arch Enemy Number One and and my kids were finding out that parently everyone hated their dad not everyone
01:00:54
hated their dad no um but when their kids and they were young kids that was that was when I started to get pretty
01:00:59
annoyed with the whole thing um but I realized I was playing with the big boys now and I wanted to make it in that form
01:01:05
of media and and you know I believed in what I said the other thing is you could
01:01:10
you don't have to be right all the time it's okay to be wrong and if if the if
01:01:15
if my argument went to the court of law and I lost I accept that the other thing
01:01:20
was all of a sudden people oh marson's put us back 40 years no I haven't the
01:01:25
law I don't set the law no one's going to change the law before what I say but
01:01:30
hopefully people will watch the am show for what I say yeah it's it's funny people are
01:01:35
funny like it's just it was just a question and it's just an opinion or it's just a thought and then you have
01:01:41
people that um because you may say one thing that they don't like they'll be
01:01:44
like well I have to disagree and loathe everything about that person and not only that is that now you you're not
01:01:50
allowed to have an opinion any longer it's like why would why would you why would you bother I I'd say like with
01:01:56
theer thing there'd be a lot of people that probably shared your thoughts but
01:02:00
would just be like it's not my battle not my circus not my monkeys well I think right now in broadcasting I think
01:02:06
it's sad I think we have become vanilla um for the sake of survival and I reckon
01:02:11
that's um that's really sad I'm very excited about um Ryan Bridge actually
01:02:16
moving into 7 7 P.M I think he will provide um he will provide uh a slightly different you know artive Ryan Bridge
01:02:25
you added him on TV yeah accidentally well I maintain it's done great things I
01:02:32
I was really I was mortified and shocked with myself because I'd let a mate down
01:02:35
he and I I I really respect the reasons why he wanted to remain in the closet in
01:02:39
a broadcasting sense because he didn't want to have to become some sort of spokesperson um and a representative of
01:02:45
the rainbow Community he just wanted to be the fellow who's a damn good political interviewer not labeled with
01:02:49
the gay guy who's a political interviewer and that's exactly what happened the minute he came out but then
01:02:54
I think people have moved past it and they realize just how good he is yeah yeah he's great isn't he yeah yeah and
01:02:59
you um yeah so who are you who are you friends with you're friends with Duncan
01:03:03
gner right like I've heard you call him an actual we drifted away a little bit
01:03:07
because of Life moved on but I like Duncan you know I think he's a genuine I
01:03:11
think he's he genuinely likes and cares about people and and I think that shows in his
01:03:18
broadcasting he's passionate about broadcasting but he genuinely does actually like like people yeah and wants
01:03:24
to help yeah yeah hey this has been great I um man we going have to reschedule and get you back another time
01:03:31
because um I feel like we're just scratching the surface of the Mark Richardson story you're such an
01:03:36
intriguing guy well when when you obviously make a fortune in in the podcast world and and um invest with
01:03:43
maybe license it and sell the license make a fortune make sure you come and knock on my door as well absolutely and
01:03:48
but do you want to get a plugin you want to get a plugin for your services oh no
01:03:51
no it's just it's just nice to get it out there because I do have to you know
01:03:54
Rebrand a little bit and get it out there that I'm now an investment advisor
01:03:56
with foresight bar taking it deeply serious and um you know and and yeah you know still always got to be me and and
01:04:05
we always have the background as a sports person or broadcaster but you know I am I'm a financial adviser now
01:04:11
and I I reckon you're going to do and I've said this a couple of times it's
01:04:14
not just pissing in your pocket but I think you're going to do Bloody well at
01:04:17
it I think there's people that have like a fixed mindset or a growth mindset and
01:04:20
most most athletes have like a growth mindset and I mean yeah you you excelled at your sport you excelled at media and
01:04:27
um you're going to excel at this well the great thing about if you do well at
01:04:31
this now with the way the compliance and regulations are if you're doing well at
01:04:36
this job at my job um investment advising then the people you're advising for doing well so it's a win-win I I
01:04:44
think in the old days maybe you know in an unregulated Cowboy world you could make a lot of money in brokerage and
01:04:50
perhaps you know didn't care about the result for the person who you were selling Securities to but now that is
01:04:56
not it's not how it works it's not how it'll ever work again so if you're doing
01:05:00
well at this gig then everyone's doing well um which is it's a great model don't understand a word of what
01:05:08
