00:00:00
The punishment for not performing the
00:00:01
skill. It can be death. If you don't
00:00:03
land right, you're going to die.
00:00:04
>> Who is Fizzy Sins?
00:00:05
>> First and foremost, I'm a child of God.
00:00:07
>> What do you say to people that would
00:00:08
suggest you've got a death wash?
00:00:09
>> The world's pretty comfortable. As soon
00:00:10
as you take off, you see the water
00:00:11
separating from you.
00:00:12
>> What are your worst injuries?
00:00:13
>> I just couldn't see anything out of my
00:00:14
right eye. Blood was coming out.
00:00:16
>> How do you feel? Do you sleep okay?
00:00:17
>> I was crying the day before. Am I ready
00:00:18
for this?
00:00:19
>> Do you feel like you've got God on your
00:00:20
side when you jump?
00:00:21
>> Get everyone to come and say a prayer.
00:00:23
If it's in his will, I will succeed.
00:00:25
>> What was the outcome for you? Would it
00:00:26
be worth it?
00:00:27
>> I'd probably regret that jump. Would you
00:00:29
like people to say he died doing what he
00:00:31
loves?
00:00:31
>> I died doing what I love.
00:00:35
>> Flynn Chism, welcome to my podcast.
00:00:37
>> Hey, thanks for having me,
00:00:38
>> mate. It's great to have you here. First
00:00:40
of all, um, uh, Fizzy Sins, that's on
00:00:43
your t-shirt.
00:00:44
>> Yeah,
00:00:44
>> it's your Instagram name. Uh, what is
00:00:46
Fizzy Sins or who is Fizzy Sins?
00:00:49
>> Uh, so Fizzy Sins, I'd say, is this um
00:00:53
dude that jumps off all these cliffs and
00:00:55
um, which is me. I'm just trying to
00:00:57
build this brand around it and this
00:00:59
community pretty much.
00:01:01
>> Is it kn for ego?
00:01:03
>> Yes. Yeah, I'd say so.
00:01:05
>> Yeah.
00:01:06
>> So, so Fizzy Sins is the guy that does
00:01:08
the death diving, which we'll get into.
00:01:10
Um Flynn Chism. Who is he?
00:01:13
>> Um I'd say like first and foremost, I'm
00:01:16
a child of God. I I want to let people
00:01:19
know that I'm a follower of Jesus. Um
00:01:22
and that's like when people ask me that
00:01:24
question, that's what I say.
00:01:26
Yeah.
00:01:27
>> What is that? How long have you been a
00:01:29
child of God?
00:01:30
>> Um, so I guess I first came to church
00:01:32
when I was around 10 years old. My mom
00:01:34
brought me in and then I guess through
00:01:37
the high school years I had a good mate
00:01:39
who was Christian as well and kept me
00:01:40
with it and I got baptized maybe four
00:01:42
years ago now. So that kind of marks the
00:01:45
start really for me.
00:01:47
>> Baptized. So you were like 17 at the
00:01:48
time, 18.
00:01:49
>> 17.
00:01:50
>> 17. Is that quite old to get baptized?
00:01:53
Uh, well, it depends. Like some people
00:01:56
get baptized really old cuz they don't
00:01:58
like meet Jesus until they're older,
00:02:00
like 40s, 50s. It doesn't Yeah, it
00:02:01
doesn't really matter, I'd say.
00:02:03
>> What What does Jesus make of what you do
00:02:05
as fizzy sense? Or does it not work that
00:02:07
way?
00:02:08
>> Um, like for me, like
00:02:12
I'm in God's creation when I'm jumping.
00:02:14
It's like really beautiful to me to go
00:02:16
out and see all this amazing creation
00:02:17
that he created. And I believe that I'm
00:02:20
like honoring him by showing everyone
00:02:22
else on social media the amazing places
00:02:25
um that I can jump and that he created.
00:02:27
Really
00:02:28
>> awesome. We might get into the um
00:02:30
religious aspect of your life later and
00:02:32
um what that means to you and what
00:02:33
that's brought to you. But um I just
00:02:35
want to focus on the death diving stuff
00:02:36
for a bit. So with um Fizzy Sins as your
00:02:40
Instagram handle, you've got 85,000
00:02:42
followers now, which is massive. How
00:02:45
does that attention sort of sit with
00:02:46
you? How how's it growing by the way?
00:02:49
>> Yeah, I mean like two years ago I
00:02:52
downloaded Instagram. Like I never had
00:02:54
social media before that. Like I still
00:02:56
kind of disagree with social media and
00:02:58
how it's impacted the world. But uh I
00:03:02
just downloaded it for my jumping and
00:03:04
I'm like yo I'm just going to share some
00:03:05
cool content that and like my
00:03:07
achievements through the sport. And then
00:03:10
I think this year it's grown from like I
00:03:13
started the year at 10,000 followers and
00:03:15
now 85 which is crazy. I've just been
00:03:18
doing so much like like jumping three
00:03:20
times a week and then yeah just heaps of
00:03:23
crazy stuff overseas and World Cups and
00:03:25
all that. So I think people like seeing
00:03:27
that journey.
00:03:28
>> How does the attention sit with you as
00:03:30
someone that's sort of anti- uh social
00:03:33
media at your core? Yeah, it's a bit
00:03:35
different. Um, especially in the mount
00:03:37
like uh getting photos and stuff like
00:03:40
>> are you kind of famous?
00:03:41
>> Uh, like in terms of recognition and
00:03:44
>> Yeah, I don't know. I don't like to use
00:03:45
that word, but I like that I'm able to
00:03:48
influence people when they meet me and
00:03:50
show that I'm not like this reckless
00:03:52
dude that's just um throwing my body off
00:03:55
cliffs, that I'm like quite calculated.
00:03:56
Like when I see people at jumping spots
00:03:58
and all that, I'm able to explain my
00:04:00
process and all that. So,
00:04:01
>> it's pretty cool that I get to be an
00:04:03
influence on that.
00:04:05
>> And with a with a bigger following comes
00:04:08
um you more sort of scrutiny, I guess.
00:04:10
Um yeah, what sort of comments do you
00:04:12
get? Posit both positive and negative.
00:04:14
>> Um to be honest, this past year, I don't
00:04:17
read comments.
00:04:18
>> Um before that, yeah, I definitely got
00:04:21
um a few bad comments for I jumped the
00:04:23
Caterpillar Dam, which is 35 m. That was
00:04:25
like the start, I would say, to my
00:04:27
growth on Instagram. you know, people
00:04:30
calling me an idiot or like I'm just
00:04:33
doing this for clicks and all that
00:04:34
stuff, but it hasn't really phased me.
00:04:36
When they go after other people, like
00:04:38
I've had comments about my parents and
00:04:39
I'm like, whoa.
00:04:41
>> Like I gave him a message, I'm like, yo.
00:04:42
Um, you can have your opinion, but yo,
00:04:45
that wasn't like appreciated by me.
00:04:47
>> Okay, those two things that you just
00:04:49
mentioned, um, are you an idiot?
00:04:52
>> Uh, no. I would like to think I'm not.
00:04:55
>> Are you are you just doing it for
00:04:56
clicks?
00:04:58
>> No. No, definitely not. Um I think there
00:05:02
is a lot of people that do do things for
00:05:05
um clicks, but not extreme sports
00:05:06
athletes. Like they're just posting
00:05:08
their achievements. And there's a lot of
00:05:11
jumps I still don't post cuz I'm I'm not
00:05:13
going to post everything, but um I'm
00:05:15
just posting what I enjoy.
00:05:17
>> What What is your why? Why do you do
00:05:18
this?
00:05:20
>> Um
00:05:22
I think you have to do it to like feel
00:05:26
it, I'd say. Um I always believed that I
00:05:30
really wanted to do something like
00:05:31
that's different to other people. Like I
00:05:33
grew up playing rugby, basketball, it
00:05:34
was all the same. And then since co I
00:05:37
started doing mountain biking, climbing
00:05:39
and all that very different sports. And
00:05:41
then just being in this dangerous
00:05:43
situation
00:05:44
and um like the punishment for not
00:05:46
performing the skill is it can be death
00:05:50
or you know severe severely bad
00:05:52
injuries. And I think I don't know, it's
00:05:55
just you get to be so present in those
00:05:57
moments that the survival instincts kick
00:06:00
in. And um we were talking about the
00:06:03
climber before, Alex Honold, you know,
00:06:05
he's doing the exact same thing. He's um
00:06:07
his survival instincts are kicking in,
00:06:09
you know, like he's just going up his
00:06:11
wall, flowing through it, and very in
00:06:13
the moment. I think it's very important.
00:06:15
>> Yeah. Alex Arnold, who did the um
00:06:16
Skyscraper um live building climb on
00:06:20
Netflix. Um, yeah, I've been going into
00:06:22
a deep dive on him ever since that came
00:06:23
out. I've listened and watched so many
00:06:25
podcasts he's been on and just made me
00:06:27
aware just because it's something that
00:06:29
like I don't necessarily understand. Um,
00:06:31
it doesn't mean that what he's doing is
00:06:33
right or wrong or stupid or amazing. And
00:06:36
I feel like it's the same sort of thing
00:06:37
with what you do. Well, a lot of the
00:06:39
comments I read about you online,
00:06:41
because I've been going into a deep dive
00:06:42
for the past week, are um people
00:06:44
worrying that like kids might copy you
00:06:47
or someone might try. Now, I can
00:06:49
honestly say I've watched maybe a
00:06:50
hundred of your videos. I've got no
00:06:52
intention of trying to do what you've
00:06:54
done. Um,
00:06:57
and I don't know, maybe it's different
00:06:58
for other people, but not for me
00:07:00
personally. Would is that a concern of
00:07:02
yours at all?
00:07:03
>> Yeah. Uh, I feel like I take some
00:07:07
responsibility for it, but like I think
00:07:10
people got to apply common sense to the
00:07:11
situation. like as like I do other
00:07:13
sports. I'm mountain biking and when I
00:07:15
watch a Red Bull athlete do a massive
00:07:17
jump, I'm not going to go grab my bike
00:07:19
and do the exact same jump cuz I don't
00:07:21
have the skill for it. Um and then if
00:07:24
people do then I think they're an idiot
00:07:28
>> because they've just done something
00:07:30
where their skill is not as high as
00:07:32
their skill is lower than their
00:07:33
confidence.
00:07:34
>> Yeah.
00:07:34
>> Yeah. There's a balance to it.
00:07:36
>> So would you describe yourself as an
00:07:38
athlete?
00:07:39
>> Yes, definitely.
00:07:40
>> Yeah. No, I compete. I compete. I've
00:07:43
competed in two different sports from
00:07:45
New Zealand. And I've applied the same
00:07:49
um rituals to my jumping that I have to
00:07:51
my climbing as well.
00:07:54
>> So, how did you first discover it? First
00:07:55
of all, what's it called? It's called
00:07:56
duds.
00:07:57
>> Yeah, duds.
00:07:58
>> Dudes.
00:07:58
>> Duds d like
00:07:59
>> that's Norwegian.
00:08:00
>> Yeah, that's a Norwegian word. Um and
00:08:03
then it's death diving. The Americans
00:08:05
call it death diving because duds in
00:08:06
Norwegian means death. Um, so that
00:08:10
originated in Norway. I don't know how
00:08:12
long ago, but um, it's like one of their
00:08:14
national sports. They have national
00:08:15
championships and the world
00:08:16
championships there usually
00:08:19
um, which I go over to qualify for.
00:08:22
>> It's not a sexy name.
00:08:25
>> Ah, I think it is.
00:08:27
>> I think it sounds pretty cool.
00:08:29
>> Yeah. Yeah. Well, it suggest that what I
00:08:31
mean it suggests there's a chance of
00:08:32
dying while you do it, which uh, it's
00:08:35
high risk. I think it's because
00:08:36
obviously we close last second, but when
00:08:38
you're like going towards the water
00:08:40
belly first, it looks like you're about
00:08:42
to die, but we actually close up like a
00:08:44
a shrimp, I'd say. So that Yeah.
00:08:46
>> Yeah. Explain um explain it exactly what
00:08:50
dudes is.
00:08:51
>> All right. I would say you're you take
00:08:53
off from a platform, cliff, bridge,
00:08:55
whatever, with water underneath, and
00:08:58
you're going to you're heading towards
00:08:59
the water belly first, and then you're
00:09:01
trying to close as late as possible. Uh
00:09:03
bringing your hands and feet together.
00:09:05
That's called the shrimp position. Or
00:09:07
you have no hander where your hands are
00:09:09
behind your um back. So you're leading
00:09:11
with your head. I don't like those
00:09:13
because those actually hurt a lot. And
00:09:14
then um crusher, which like um
00:09:16
protecting your head like this.
00:09:18
>> Um those are like the three common
00:09:20
landing styles.
00:09:22
>> So it requires skill.
00:09:24
>> Yes, you definitely um want to start low
00:09:27
and learn the technique.
00:09:32
>> So what was your first jump? How did you
00:09:34
start?
00:09:35
>> My first jump like you know from a young
00:09:38
age everyone like does manus and stuff.
00:09:40
I was doing mostly just straight jumps
00:09:42
like landing on my feet and then
00:09:43
>> like a pin drop.
00:09:44
>> Like a pin drop. Yeah, exactly. So I had
00:09:46
pin drop like 17 m before I started
00:09:48
dodzing. Um and then
00:09:52
>> 17 m.
00:09:53
>> Yeah.
00:09:54
>> Um that's still my highest straight jump
00:09:56
to this day.
00:09:57
>> Where's that at?
00:09:57
>> Uh in McLaren Falls, my local spot in
00:09:59
Toadonga. But um I wanted to do
00:10:02
something cool cuz like pin drops look.
00:10:04
You're just like landing in the water.
00:10:05
And I couldn't do any flips or spins or
00:10:07
anything. I was too scared. So I'm like,
00:10:08
"Okay, I'll just land differently." And
00:10:10
then then all my mates would be like,
00:10:12
"Whoa, that's so cool." And then after I
00:10:15
did that, then I wanted to learn spins
00:10:16
and flips.
00:10:18
>> Yeah. There was one like one moment
00:10:20
where it clicked for me that I really
00:10:21
wanted to do it was there's this local
00:10:23
spot in the mount on Leisure Island. Um,
00:10:26
it's called Suicide Rock and I was just
00:10:28
there with a couple of mates. And
00:10:29
>> again, not a sexy name.
00:10:30
>> No, that that one isn't. I don't
00:10:32
recommend many people to try that one
00:10:33
cuz it had a fair gap, but I was very
00:10:36
confident in my ability. And again, I
00:10:38
had two people in the water as safety.
00:10:40
Went up through my rocks and I jumped
00:10:43
it. And that was like a crazy
00:10:45
accomplishment. Like I had just dodged
00:10:47
17 and that was like pretty high like
00:10:51
back then. high inflation we call it now
00:10:53
is 17's not that high but
00:10:56
>> yeah it's a pretty pinnacle moment
00:10:57
>> I suppose anytime you get a new PB it's
00:11:00
um like a scary moment or a a nervous
00:11:03
moment
00:11:03
>> yeah definitely and then I would say you
00:11:06
got to really celebrate that PB because
00:11:08
it could be your last like you can't
00:11:10
just keep going higher like there is a
00:11:11
limit and nobody wants to reach that
00:11:15
limit
00:11:17
>> um yes so that limit you you have the
00:11:20
New Zealand record which you set in
00:11:22
Spain last year.
00:11:23
>> Yep.
00:11:24
>> 40 m.
00:11:25
>> Yeah.
00:11:26
>> That was off that was at a proper
00:11:27
competition off of like a a scaffolding
00:11:30
platform.
00:11:30
>> No, that was off a cliff. Like I was at
00:11:33
the gainer tour which has comps and
00:11:35
tours along the way, but no one was
00:11:38
jumping 40. So I I had to find it
00:11:40
myself. Like I didn't know I was jumping
00:11:41
that cliff the day before. Like I found
00:11:44
out the night before that I was going to
00:11:45
jump it. But I was searching cuz I was
00:11:47
prepping my body. I was like doing 30 m
00:11:50
like it was nothing. 34 meter jumps just
00:11:52
every single day. And then I found this
00:11:54
40 and
00:11:57
yeah had 15 people there. It was I think
00:12:00
the fact it was 40 wasn't the scariest
00:12:01
part. It had like a 7 m gap. So when I
00:12:05
was throwing my rocks cuz Okay, so with
00:12:07
the gap I couldn't see my landing zone.
00:12:09
Like I couldn't see any people in the
00:12:11
water cuz he was like cliff in front of
00:12:13
me because I had to jump over the cliff.
00:12:14
So, when I was throwing my rocks, my
00:12:16
safety out dead. And I'm like, whoa,
00:12:19
what does this mean? And I just hit
00:12:21
another rock down the bottom cuz I'm
00:12:24
landing when my rock lands. I'm like,
00:12:25
okay, I'm going to have to throw this
00:12:26
really fast. So, I threw it like further
00:12:28
and they yelled out dead again. I'm
00:12:30
like, wow, I got to really push out for
00:12:32
this one. So, I threw it really hard. It
00:12:34
landed just in the water, 2 m clearance.
00:12:37
And I don't know, looking back, I'm so
00:12:40
glad it's over cuz yeah, when I jumped
00:12:43
out maybe halfway down, then I knew that
00:12:46
I was going to make the gap. I guess the
00:12:48
Yeah, the gap was definitely the
00:12:49
scariest part.
00:12:52
>> So, just to create a mental picture of
00:12:53
this, so you you throw a rock out to
00:12:56
make sure you get the water and from the
00:12:58
splash, you can tell how deep the water
00:12:59
is or
00:13:00
>> Oh, I can like
00:13:02
if I throw a rock, that's where I'm
00:13:04
going to land. So when I didn't throw it
00:13:07
like I threw it normally and it was
00:13:08
hitting other rocks. So the cliff's here
00:13:11
and there's rocks down here and I'm
00:13:13
throwing a rock over over these rocks
00:13:16
down here.
00:13:16
>> So that means you need to have more of a
00:13:18
run up and a sprint before you jump.
00:13:19
>> So I got to push super hard to make it
00:13:22
over these rocks.
00:13:23
>> Oh no, bro. That sounds too too risky
00:13:25
for me.
00:13:25
>> Yeah. So that was that was the sketchy
00:13:27
part.
00:13:29
>> Oh my god, that is so sketchy. And uh
00:13:31
did you know it was a New Zealand
00:13:33
record? Is that something that you were
00:13:34
like intentionally striving for?
00:13:37
>> Uh, I was striving for the 40 club. It's
00:13:39
like a really prestigious like number
00:13:41
like only seven other people I think
00:13:43
have 40 m or higher. Um, I already had
00:13:47
the New Zealand record. I only caption
00:13:49
it as record for clicks I guess cuz as
00:13:52
soon as you see record they're like whoa
00:13:54
I'm going to share this to someone else.
00:13:57
>> So yeah. But with what you've just
00:13:59
explained,
00:14:03
what if something goes wrong like
00:14:04
outside of the the actual dodging bit in
00:14:07
terms of I don't know like you you you
00:14:10
you stub your toe on a rock on while
00:14:13
you're doing the runup or you know you
00:14:14
trip over on a a tree route or
00:14:16
something.
00:14:17
>> Yeah. So I do a lot of runups. So I
00:14:20
don't really post that too often. Um I'm
00:14:23
probably throwing five rocks. So, if I'm
00:14:24
doing a runup, I'll run, throw my rock,
00:14:26
see where it lands, and I'll probably
00:14:28
clear the runup as well. If there's like
00:14:30
rocks, I'm just going to take them away.
00:14:32
I call it gardening. So, um if I'm at a
00:14:36
spot and it's too bushy, I have to jump
00:14:37
over a bush, I'm just going to clear
00:14:38
that bush or like flatten it so I don't
00:14:40
have to pull out any roots. Um yeah.
00:14:43
>> Do you often go to a jump platform and
00:14:46
then um bail or abort?
00:14:50
>> Yep. Maybe due to weather, if it's too
00:14:54
slippery, um it's really annoying and
00:14:56
like cliff jumpers don't like bailing,
00:14:58
but you know, safety at the end of the
00:15:00
day, you just got to do it. Um pretty
00:15:02
much.
00:15:05
>> What do you say to people that um would
00:15:07
suggest you've got a death wash?
00:15:10
>> I just say they have a lack of
00:15:12
understanding of what I do, I guess. You
00:15:15
know, the world's pretty comfortable.
00:15:16
You know, everyone's warm, everyone's
00:15:18
fed, everyone's hydrated. I just want
00:15:21
to, you know, push my own limits. And
00:15:25
>> I know that everyone else that is an
00:15:27
extreme sport um wants the same.
00:15:32
>> Yeah. There's a saying you can't um yuck
00:15:34
someone else's yum. And I feel like
00:15:37
that's the that's the case here. Um but
00:15:39
you do you hear that a lot, the death
00:15:40
wish thing?
00:15:42
>> Yeah. Yeah,
00:15:42
>> a lot of people don't understand why I
00:15:44
do it, but like I have had a lot of
00:15:46
mates uh that I take and even from 5 m,
00:15:52
they get the biggest rush of adrenaline
00:15:54
cuz as soon as you push out, that
00:15:55
feeling is like you can't describe that
00:15:58
to someone else. Like as soon as you
00:16:00
take off and you see the water separate
00:16:01
from you, it's like crazy feeling. And
00:16:03
then you hit the water, you come up and
00:16:05
you celebrate like I just accomplished
00:16:06
this.
00:16:07
>> Um
00:16:09
>> cuz it's like instant flow state. I
00:16:11
don't know if you know what the flow
00:16:12
state is.
00:16:12
>> Yeah. Yeah. Like
00:16:14
>> when you're in the air, there's like no
00:16:16
other thoughts
00:16:17
>> except like most people scream and that
00:16:19
is their one thought. They're like ah
00:16:20
like that's all they think in the air.
00:16:22
Where you go with like rugby your mind
00:16:24
can go elsewhere
00:16:25
>> you know it's 80 minutes where this is
00:16:29
maximum of 3 seconds and um I think
00:16:33
that's pretty special.
00:16:37
>> What are you thinking about in that 3
00:16:38
seconds? Are you just thinking about
00:16:40
what you've got to do
00:16:41
>> or are you thinking about God?
00:16:43
>> No, I'm think like there's nothing like
00:16:45
there's no thoughts. Even when I spin uh
00:16:48
like doing spins and flips like you're
00:16:50
kind of just focusing on the movement
00:16:51
and spotting, but like even when you're
00:16:53
spotting, not really thinking like I'm
00:16:55
just enjoying all the the air time. Like
00:16:58
sometimes when there's a fat run up,
00:17:00
like you get to boost it. I'm just in
00:17:02
the air just like looking around and
00:17:03
just like, man, this is amazing.
00:17:05
Do you know or know of anyone that's
00:17:07
died or suffered significant injuries?
00:17:10
>> Yeah. Yeah. Um yeah, on the gainer tour
00:17:15
this year, someone um
00:17:18
broke his spine. Um couldn't feel his
00:17:21
legs for a bit. Had someone got knocked
00:17:23
out on that same tour and he was sinking
00:17:25
and we had to pull him up. Um
00:17:29
but
00:17:30
I don't think they were ready for that
00:17:32
jump. Oh, the guy that did 34 and broke
00:17:35
his back. I mean, he was a previous
00:17:36
world record holder, but he didn't like
00:17:38
progress up, I guess, through the the
00:17:41
stages to work up to it. I think he was
00:17:42
a bit pressured into it. And then the
00:17:44
guy that got knocked out, he was just
00:17:46
hucking sick side flips off the rip.
00:17:49
Like, you don't usually warm up.
00:17:51
>> Like, if someone gets injured, there's
00:17:53
usually a reason.
00:17:54
>> Yeah.
00:17:57
>> What are your worst injuries?
00:17:59
Um,
00:18:01
I'd say currently my eye like earlier,
00:18:04
oh no, later last year in September
00:18:07
>> when you went temporarily blind. Is that
00:18:09
>> Oh, yeah. I'm still like like I'm going
00:18:11
to need glasses unfortunately. And that
00:18:14
was like pretty like tough to swallow. I
00:18:18
was pretty gutted, but like now I'm
00:18:20
like, you know, that's life, you know.
00:18:21
>> What happened?
00:18:22
>> Um, it was a 25 m jump into Oky Falls,
00:18:25
the rafting area in Rooua. And
00:18:30
I wouldn't I think I took every step
00:18:33
correctly. It's just my landing wasn't
00:18:35
as good as usual. And when I closed I
00:18:38
closed too hard and my knee went into my
00:18:40
face um into my eye and as soon as I
00:18:43
came up I'm like I just couldn't see
00:18:45
anything out of my right eye. And then
00:18:47
later that night I was like having blood
00:18:49
out of the cornea. I don't know really
00:18:52
know the eye very well but yeah blood
00:18:54
was coming out. I'm like whoa this is
00:18:56
Yep. go the doctor and then yeah I think
00:18:59
I had a dislocated lens so it fell out.
00:19:01
Usually your lens is straight and then
00:19:03
it just went boom. So that's why I can
00:19:05
like see closely but further away is a
00:19:08
bit tricky.
00:19:10
>> Um other injuries I've got from you uh
00:19:13
blowing eardrum, concussion, uh
00:19:15
temporary blindness and coughing up
00:19:17
blood.
00:19:18
>> All right, the coughing up blood was not
00:19:20
too bad. That was from the dam. Um yeah,
00:19:23
I just came up sped out some blood and
00:19:25
walked away. After that, I was all good.
00:19:26
But the blowing air drum is really
00:19:28
common. Um, I just landed on my side. I
00:19:31
was, it was my first time trying three
00:19:33
spins, which is a 1080. Over rotated,
00:19:35
just like boom, water went straight in
00:19:38
and yeah, couldn't hear for a couple
00:19:40
months. But like that stuff feels like
00:19:43
No, like there's other injuries I've
00:19:45
seen in the sport. Like I would rather
00:19:47
my eardrum go than like a broken leg
00:19:49
where I'm out for ages. Um, and then
00:19:53
concussions. Yeah, I I take those really
00:19:56
seriously.
00:19:57
>> Oh, concussions plural.
00:19:59
>> Uh
00:20:01
well, yeah, technically I don't know how
00:20:04
many I've had cuz I've had some before
00:20:07
jumping. I think I've only had like
00:20:09
three from jumping. Um like just playing
00:20:12
footy and stuff. I've had a few head
00:20:14
knocks and all that. But yeah, those
00:20:16
things I take pretty serious.
00:20:18
>> Even when you have a great jump and
00:20:19
everything goes right, does it still
00:20:21
hurt physically?
00:20:22
>> No.
00:20:24
No, I wouldn't say so. Uh, like for the
00:20:26
lower jumps, sometimes it hurts if I
00:20:28
land perfectly because I'm just not that
00:20:30
nervous. I'm not tensing very hard and I
00:20:32
hit the water a bit more limp and I'm
00:20:33
like, "Oh, that kind of hurt." But like
00:20:36
most of my 30s and even the 40 felt like
00:20:38
nothing. No impact at all. I came up,
00:20:40
I'm like, "Yo, wrist is good, ankle
00:20:42
good, head's good. I could go do that
00:20:44
again."
00:20:46
>> See what happens after each jump. You do
00:20:47
like a quick mental sort of stock take
00:20:49
of the
00:20:50
>> Yeah. I'm just like rolling around my
00:20:51
wrist. Yo, ankle's good. Ah, sweet. Get
00:20:54
to go tomorrow.
00:20:57
>> When um at what point did it stop being
00:20:58
something you did just for fun and shits
00:21:00
and giggles and it became something you
00:21:01
took seriously and competitively?
00:21:04
>> Um
00:21:05
just when people like started messaging
00:21:08
me like, "Oh, how do you do this dots?
00:21:10
How do you do this technique?" And I'm
00:21:11
like, "Oh, wow. This is like people are
00:21:13
really wanting to know in New Zealand."
00:21:15
Um like my current goal is to get more
00:21:17
people doing dods or staples than Manus.
00:21:20
Um but yeah, once people started like
00:21:23
noticing it, I'm like, "Oh man. Um I
00:21:26
better like like keep the content up so
00:21:30
people um are inspired to do it."
00:21:33
>> And you've had some um mainstream media
00:21:35
coverage as a result of it. Uh on your
00:21:38
Instagram Instagram page, Fizzy Sins,
00:21:39
there's um a clip of you with Ryan
00:21:41
Bridge and you've been on um with
00:21:43
Patrick Gower as well, Patty Gower.
00:21:45
Yeah, I've been on a few news channels
00:21:46
around the world like Norway and Bali
00:21:48
and
00:21:51
um I think there's one other country.
00:21:52
Oh, and Aussie as well.
00:21:54
>> Um but a few here. Like if I get those
00:21:57
opportunities, I'm going to take it cuz
00:21:58
it like professionalizes the the sport
00:22:00
as well. I get to explain that we're not
00:22:02
just reckless
00:22:04
>> and um yeah, it's pretty cool,
00:22:06
especially for the brand. It pushes the
00:22:08
brand.
00:22:09
>> Yeah.
00:22:09
>> Do Yeah. Yeah. What's the goal with the
00:22:11
brand? Like are you hoping to I'm
00:22:13
thinking like Red Bull would be a good
00:22:15
fit for what you do.
00:22:16
>> Yeah, I've had chats with Red Bull. Um
00:22:19
>> how do you monetize this?
00:22:20
>> Monetize? Uh Facebook pays a bit of
00:22:22
money. Um I've had a few brand deals
00:22:25
that pay a bit. Uh I mean I still work
00:22:27
full-time like as soon as you know it
00:22:30
becomes a full-time job. You don't like
00:22:32
people usually don't enjoy it as much.
00:22:33
It's definitely a goal to have the
00:22:34
financial freedom to do this every day.
00:22:37
Um but yeah, I'm just waiting for the
00:22:39
right company. Um, I'm going to start my
00:22:41
own board short line, Fizzy Sen's board
00:22:44
short line with a company as well. I'm
00:22:45
hoping to have that ready by next summer
00:22:48
or start promoting it in winter. So,
00:22:50
that's a big goal. Um,
00:22:53
but my biggest goal usually I tell
00:22:55
everyone is that I want to find a way to
00:22:58
financially support other athletes to
00:23:00
travel uh to compete in their sport that
00:23:03
don't have the money to
00:23:04
>> like to go to a World Cup cuz all these
00:23:07
minority sports don't get much money.
00:23:08
You know, the All Blacks take it. No, I
00:23:10
don't want to blame the all blacks, but
00:23:12
yeah, rugby cricket. Yeah, they all take
00:23:15
the funding and like coming from speed
00:23:16
climbing where I had to work full-time
00:23:18
and train 24 hours a week, it's like
00:23:21
exhausting, especially want to focus on
00:23:23
resting and eating. Um, right. Yeah.
00:23:28
>> Yeah. How do you train for this?
00:23:30
>> Uh, for death, I do a lot of gym. I
00:23:32
still climb like a lot as well. I try to
00:23:35
build my back and traps because that's
00:23:37
what's copying most of the impact and
00:23:39
just conditioning the body with hard
00:23:41
impacts. Like before my 40, I was
00:23:43
ripping all these 30s to build up a
00:23:46
tolerance. I guess it's like I relate it
00:23:49
to boxing. You know, they get punched in
00:23:50
the abs and then their abs get used to
00:23:53
that hit. Um it's pretty much Yeah.
00:23:55
preparing for that impact really.
00:24:01
>> Did you did you hide it from your
00:24:03
parents originally?
00:24:05
Uh,
00:24:07
maybe my mom. I think I did.
00:24:09
>> Um, that suicide rock clip that I was
00:24:12
explaining about, I showed my dad. Oh,
00:24:14
no. I showed my mom first and she's
00:24:15
like, "Oh, yeah. You got to stop this."
00:24:18
Yeah. This is This is getting a bit too
00:24:19
far.
00:24:20
>> It's a mother's nightmare.
00:24:22
>> Yeah. Yeah. Um, and then my dad didn't
00:24:25
really like that clip either. And then I
00:24:29
think I would say I was a little bit
00:24:30
more reckless at the start cuz I just
00:24:32
didn't know. So, I wasn't as experienced
00:24:33
back then, but leading on now, like I'll
00:24:37
like ring my dad. I'm like, I'm about to
00:24:38
do a 30 m. And he's like, "Oh, all good,
00:24:41
boy. Y just let me know when it's done."
00:24:43
But like he came to a 28 m one time. It
00:24:46
was my PR and he freaked out. He's like,
00:24:49
"Oh, I don't want to watch this." Which
00:24:51
is fair enough. Like I I don't think I
00:24:52
would want to watch my son either. But
00:24:54
now he's like he's all about pushing uh
00:24:57
the boundaries and doing something
00:24:59
creative.
00:25:02
to compare it to um like the size of a
00:25:04
building. What would 28 m be? The clip
00:25:06
the the jump you're talking about with
00:25:07
your dad watching.
00:25:08
>> I think Oh, the one that my dad's
00:25:10
watching.
00:25:11
>> Yeah, the 28 m one that he he couldn't
00:25:12
watch.
00:25:14
>> 40 m is about 12 stories, right?
00:25:16
>> Yeah. So,
00:25:17
>> is that like nine perhaps? A ntory
00:25:19
building.
00:25:20
>> Yeah.
00:25:20
>> I just want to put it in terms that you
00:25:22
the average listener or viewer can
00:25:23
relate to. It's um
00:25:25
>> Yeah. Yeah. I don't think many people
00:25:27
would be comfortable like standing on
00:25:28
the edge of a nine-tory building and
00:25:29
looking over the edge.
00:25:31
>> No, but I like that.
00:25:35
>> Um, and how does your mom feel about it
00:25:36
now?
00:25:37
>> Um, I think, well, she likes it. I get
00:25:41
to meet people like you guys and Patty
00:25:43
Gower and stuff. Um, she's like, "Oh,
00:25:45
that's pretty cool." Um,
00:25:48
but
00:25:50
I don't know. I think she likes it. She
00:25:51
thought I was always going to go to uni
00:25:52
and be a doctor or something. So, I'm
00:25:54
sorry, Mom.
00:25:56
Um,
00:25:57
>> you're going to see a lot of doctors.
00:25:59
>> Yeah. Yeah.
00:26:01
>> Um, yeah. Do you get more nervous doing
00:26:03
the the media things or podcasts like
00:26:05
this or like standing on the edge of a
00:26:06
30ft drop?
00:26:07
>> Nah. Because
00:26:10
when I am standing on the edge, you
00:26:12
know, this is life or death situation.
00:26:13
We're taking it real seriously. And like
00:26:15
I said before, right now we're in a
00:26:17
comfortable room. I'm warm. I mean, the
00:26:19
AC is a little bit cold, but um like I
00:26:22
got drinks in front of me and like I'm
00:26:24
just comfortable. There's nothing to be
00:26:26
nervous about. There's no life
00:26:28
threatening threats or anything. So,
00:26:32
>> what are your biggest fears? What are
00:26:35
you scared of?
00:26:36
>> Um
00:26:39
>> like it might even be something that has
00:26:40
nothing to do with um duds. Um,
00:26:46
I don't I wouldn't say I have like Oh, I
00:26:48
guess being a paraplegic would be very
00:26:52
very scary. I don't really like speaking
00:26:54
that into existence really.
00:26:57
>> Um, maybe myself changing if I ever did
00:27:00
get bigger, you know. I'm always pushing
00:27:02
>> Oh, in terms of like ego.
00:27:04
>> Yeah. Yeah. like I'm always pushing um
00:27:07
like to build a brand and all that and I
00:27:10
never want to shy away from
00:27:13
like or like not be humble or like
00:27:15
arrogant or
00:27:17
yeah, stuff like that. And especially
00:27:19
with my faith as well, I don't want to
00:27:21
like just shy away from that. I want to
00:27:23
make sure that I'm always like true to
00:27:25
myself, I guess.
00:27:26
>> I don't think there's much chance of
00:27:28
that happening. Um, but you you
00:27:29
mentioned the um the P word uh just
00:27:31
before. There's um a guy I've had on the
00:27:34
podcast a couple of times now, Brad. Uh
00:27:36
he was um he was a wakeboarder,
00:27:39
>> Red Bull athlete. Um and he had an an
00:27:42
incident on a ramp in the States and
00:27:44
he's um he's now I'm probably going to
00:27:46
get he's either a tetroplegic or a
00:27:48
quadriplegic. Um but he's got no
00:27:51
movement from um the head down. Um he's
00:27:53
got like a stylus on his chair which he,
00:27:56
you know, uses to to write with on his
00:27:58
phone. Um he like blows into this um
00:28:01
blows into this little tube to propel
00:28:03
his chair forward. Um and that's a
00:28:05
result of him doing something sort of
00:28:07
extreme what he loves.
00:28:10
If in touch with this is never the case,
00:28:13
but if that was the outcome for you,
00:28:14
would it be worth it
00:28:18
in the pursuit of doing what you love?
00:28:20
>> Uh well, I mean, I'd probably
00:28:23
regret that jump. But you know, people
00:28:27
drive cars and they die. You know,
00:28:30
>> people just ride bikes to school, they
00:28:32
get hit, they become a paraple.
00:28:35
I can't apply that logic to jumping
00:28:37
because there is so many risks in this
00:28:39
world that
00:28:40
>> if you're just like
00:28:43
just driving from Toadonga to Oakuckland
00:28:45
today it's like oh why would I do that
00:28:47
when there's you know
00:28:50
>> a high risk of someone else hitting me
00:28:52
like I'm in control when I'm jumping you
00:28:54
know there's so many external things in
00:28:56
normal life where someone can just come
00:28:58
up and stab you like and that happens
00:29:01
>> um so I think living life like that is
00:29:04
really boring and h sad as well. But in
00:29:09
saying that, yeah, like I I never do a
00:29:11
jump that I'm not prepared for either.
00:29:12
So I'm always confident in my ability
00:29:15
and if that for some reason happened,
00:29:17
I'm like it could have happened another
00:29:18
way.
00:29:19
>> Um yeah, I think a lot of athletes feel
00:29:22
the same way. Like I've um I've listened
00:29:24
to a lot of podcasts like that who uh
00:29:26
got a bad injury. Now I'm like, "Yeah,
00:29:28
that could have happened another way
00:29:29
anyway."
00:29:31
>> Yeah. You you might be a bit bit young
00:29:32
to know this song, but um you know the
00:29:34
band Pink Floyd.
00:29:36
>> Mhm.
00:29:36
>> Yeah. They've got a song called Wish You
00:29:37
Were Were Here. And there's a a great
00:29:38
line in that song um saying, "Did you
00:29:41
exchange a walk-on part in the war for a
00:29:43
lead role in a cage?" Which basically
00:29:45
means you can live in a cage. Um but
00:29:47
it's not really living, you know, or you
00:29:49
can do some uh do some stuff.
00:29:51
>> We actually had that in the car on the
00:29:52
way here, that song,
00:29:53
>> actually.
00:29:53
>> Yeah. Yeah, we listen. Yeah. Yeah.
00:29:55
>> I got goosebumps hearing that.
00:29:57
>> Yeah. Oh, my mate is like Ned Ned
00:29:59
Johnson. Shout out to him. He's like a
00:30:00
massive Pink Floyd. Oh, yeah. Pink Floyd
00:30:03
fan. Yeah. Yeah. Love him.
00:30:05
>> But that line in particular, that sounds
00:30:07
like what you were It sums up what you
00:30:09
were saying just before, I think. Do you
00:30:10
Do you feel like you've got um you've
00:30:12
got God on your side when you jump as
00:30:15
like a a sort of a like a a shield or a
00:30:17
layer of protection?
00:30:18
>> Uh yeah, I I think about that a lot.
00:30:21
Like before all my big jumps, I get
00:30:24
everyone to come and say a prayer. Even
00:30:25
before these cliff tours, usually I get
00:30:27
everyone to come in for a prayer and I
00:30:28
pray over them as well cuz
00:30:31
um
00:30:33
you know if it's in as well I will
00:30:35
succeed. Um and if I am being reckless
00:30:38
like that's why I'm not reckless with my
00:30:40
jumping cuz I'm like well that was just
00:30:41
stupid and like like God wouldn't want
00:30:45
me to do something stupid. Like if I'm
00:30:47
training for it and being p purposeful
00:30:50
with it then it's yeah okay in my
00:30:53
opinion. In terms of safety, what are
00:30:55
the key things you assess before
00:30:56
deciding if it's safe enough?
00:30:58
>> That is a great question. Um, depth
00:31:00
check is like that is clear cut. Like if
00:31:04
it's not deep enough, I'm not jumping.
00:31:05
If it's
00:31:06
>> Do do you get in the water first to
00:31:08
>> with goggles?
00:31:09
>> Okay.
00:31:09
>> Yeah. I actually get three people. So,
00:31:11
we cover the whole area cuz if there's a
00:31:12
log sticking up, that's gone. You're
00:31:15
gone. So,
00:31:15
>> how much depth do you need?
00:31:17
>> Uh,
00:31:20
3 mters, I'd say. I've jumped off 20
00:31:22
mters. um into 2 m deep water and I just
00:31:25
did a hard landing. I was pretty
00:31:26
confident that I wasn't going to hit but
00:31:28
yeah, I'd say 3 mters.
00:31:30
Yeah. Oh, and then the other safety is
00:31:34
having safety in the water in case you
00:31:36
do mark up a trick or
00:31:39
you know the performance and they
00:31:41
probably need to like help you and hold
00:31:43
you while you're um winded or something
00:31:46
like that. Um I throw rocks to see the
00:31:49
gap. If the gap's too big, then we would
00:31:51
have to call it. um the takeoff takeoff
00:31:54
slippery
00:31:56
um or jagged that that um comes into the
00:32:01
decision. Um and then just someone out
00:32:04
of the water with a phone in case
00:32:06
something really went wrong. Like I
00:32:07
usually have four to five people at my
00:32:09
jumps minimum. Um yeah, take care of
00:32:13
safety.
00:32:15
>> The the location of each jump, is that
00:32:18
something you take into account in terms
00:32:19
of safety? I.e. the accessibility for
00:32:21
like the Westpack rescue helicopter,
00:32:23
say, you know what I mean?
00:32:25
>> Yep. So, if it's in a remote area then
00:32:29
like I don't usually like doing it
00:32:31
>> unless I have maybe 10 people with me
00:32:34
and we have a my mate just got a beacon
00:32:37
or something you can like flick up and
00:32:38
push and then the
00:32:40
>> like a GPS thing.
00:32:41
>> Yeah. Yeah. So, that's really helpful.
00:32:43
So, we can push the limit a little bit
00:32:44
more with that. But um yeah, the
00:32:47
geography of where the jump is um yeah
00:32:51
>> comes into it.
00:32:52
>> The the the night or the days and nights
00:32:55
before like a big significant jump.
00:32:58
How do you feel? Do you sleep okay? Do
00:33:00
you get excited? Are you nervous?
00:33:04
>> Uh before the dam, which was my PR at
00:33:08
the time. I was going from 28 to 35 m.
00:33:11
Yeah. I was I was crying the day before
00:33:13
cuz I thought I was going to do it that
00:33:14
day and I'm like wa this is like heavy.
00:33:16
I'm like am I ready for this and then
00:33:19
just put a whole lot of thought into it.
00:33:20
And then that night I actually went and
00:33:22
watched the scariest movie of my life,
00:33:24
The Smile 2 in the cinema. And I didn't
00:33:27
even think about The Jump the next day
00:33:29
cuz I was just so scared from that
00:33:30
movie. Oh my gosh, I I wouldn't watch
00:33:32
that.
00:33:34
Um that that to me seems like a bad
00:33:37
sign. Like if you're if you're crying
00:33:38
the day or a couple of days before like
00:33:40
what you you're you I think you must be
00:33:43
sort of built different from most in
00:33:45
terms of I think most people would be
00:33:46
like this is a sign that I shouldn't do
00:33:48
this.
00:33:49
>> Yeah, I guess so. I think I was just
00:33:51
feeling it and um just trusting myself.
00:33:56
And I always like messaged my dad. I'm
00:33:58
like, "Oh, I'm planning on doing this."
00:34:01
And he's like, "Yeah, if you feeling
00:34:02
confident, I feel confident in you." My
00:34:05
girlfriend the same as well. She's like,
00:34:06
"I don't think you have it today, but
00:34:07
tomorrow when we have more people, um,
00:34:10
I'm feeling good." So, I kind of like I
00:34:13
have like mental outlets, I guess, where
00:34:16
my girlfriend's really good for it. She
00:34:18
comes to like pretty much every PR I've
00:34:20
done, she's been there. I can just
00:34:22
discuss and she understands cuz she
00:34:24
knows all the other jumps as well. So,
00:34:26
it's um, yeah, very, very helpful.
00:34:29
>> Does she jump too?
00:34:30
>> Oh, she's done like 4 m dods, I guess.
00:34:33
and
00:34:34
>> she's like straight jumped 11 m or so.
00:34:36
So, I'm quite proud of her for that.
00:34:37
>> I wouldn't I wouldn't do that.
00:34:38
>> Yeah. Yeah. No, I was pretty stoked when
00:34:40
she did it.
00:34:41
>> Yeah. So, but it's not her thing.
00:34:43
>> No, but she loves traveling around. She
00:34:45
um traveled all throughout Europe um
00:34:48
last year with me, you know. We went to
00:34:50
all these World Cups in Norway and just
00:34:52
staying with people. We got a camper van
00:34:54
around Iceland. So,
00:34:55
>> yeah, she definitely loves the travel
00:34:57
aspect and meeting all these other cool
00:34:58
rad people. like the community is so um
00:35:02
cool and inviting that you know everyone
00:35:05
else's girlfriend is there as well so
00:35:07
you get to
00:35:08
>> y with them.
00:35:10
>> Have you had a chat with her about like
00:35:12
what what she goes through like in the
00:35:14
leadup to a jump?
00:35:16
>> Yeah. Um
00:35:18
I usually ask her just straight up. I'm
00:35:20
like, "Oh, I'm sorry. Like what do you
00:35:22
what do you think about this?" And then
00:35:25
uh she was there that day that my dad
00:35:28
was there watching the 28 meter and she
00:35:30
really didn't like that one. It was it
00:35:31
was Hanua Falls. So that was like it had
00:35:34
like a bad rep like the story behind it
00:35:36
and I didn't know that story. I didn't
00:35:37
want to know the story. Um but yeah, she
00:35:41
she didn't really like that one. But
00:35:43
from now on we kind of like discuss
00:35:44
together if we're like ready for it or
00:35:46
not.
00:35:47
>> And I'm assuming she's always like
00:35:49
really scared. But um she knows that I
00:35:53
love it and when I come up from a jump
00:35:55
all excited, she's excited. So it's kind
00:35:58
of like a team effort, I'd say. It's a
00:36:00
team effort with everyone there, you
00:36:01
know. Everyone's like putting that
00:36:02
energy into me and I'm putting that
00:36:04
energy into others who are jumping as
00:36:06
well.
00:36:07
>> Yeah, team effort.
00:36:08
>> It's a massive massive support crew for
00:36:10
sure. How long have you been with your
00:36:11
girlfriend?
00:36:13
>> Oh, pretty much since I started. Oh,
00:36:15
like I met her a month after I started
00:36:18
um death diving. um she doesn't like the
00:36:21
story, but the first time we met,
00:36:24
we went to McLaren Falls and I like
00:36:26
jumped the green building, which has a
00:36:28
massive gap, and they were like, "What
00:36:29
the heck?" Like, "I'd never date someone
00:36:31
like that." Um,
00:36:34
now she does.
00:36:36
>> So, it's been what, years?
00:36:38
>> Yeah. Two two years.
00:36:39
>> Yeah. Okay. I'm going to ask you the
00:36:40
most horrible question ever. If she came
00:36:42
to you and said, "Flynn, it's either me
00:36:44
or death diving.
00:36:51
I'd probably just do one last jump. Like
00:36:53
maybe I dodge 50 meters to get the world
00:36:54
record and then I'm like, "Okay, I'm
00:36:56
done."
00:36:57
>> Is I can't I can't like I'd probably
00:37:00
just I'd choose her. Um cuz there's so
00:37:04
many other things that I enjoy doing
00:37:06
like climbing and
00:37:08
>> just traveling. So yeah.
00:37:12
>> Yeah. the the speed climbing it seems
00:37:13
like a much more you like you're really
00:37:15
good at that e like you've you've
00:37:16
represented New Zealand at a national
00:37:18
level.
00:37:19
>> Uh yeah like I've gone overseas
00:37:21
>> to world champs and world cups and stuff
00:37:24
and I competed with Julian. He's like
00:37:27
quite well known in New Zealand. He's an
00:37:29
Olympian. Um he actually took my spot
00:37:32
the little bugger um at the Ocean
00:37:35
Champs. He won so he got to go which was
00:37:36
awesome. But yeah um we actually got
00:37:39
Ocean Champs this weekend and national
00:37:41
champs. So, I'll be competing
00:37:43
uh then. So, it'll be cool.
00:37:45
>> Now, that's um like a that's become like
00:37:47
a a legitimized sport now that it's um
00:37:50
an Olympic sport, right? Does does
00:37:51
anyone from the the climbing world like
00:37:54
frown upon the death diving or do they
00:37:58
sort of encourage it and support it
00:38:00
>> like from the speed climbing community
00:38:01
or the climbing community?
00:38:02
>> Yes. Yeah.
00:38:03
>> Oh, no. They love it. Oh,
00:38:04
>> do they?
00:38:04
>> Oh, yeah. Cuz they're all like super
00:38:07
sick people as well and no one else is
00:38:10
really doing it. So like when I come to
00:38:11
a competition, I'm not known as a
00:38:14
climber. They're like, "Oh, he's a death
00:38:16
diver."
00:38:17
>> So that's like the pressure is taken off
00:38:21
now cuz I'm like, "Ah, speed climbing is
00:38:23
kind of second to me." It was like for 4
00:38:25
years I was like dedicated like
00:38:28
um riding the highs and lows of the
00:38:30
competitions, but now there's so much
00:38:32
less pressure that I get I just get to
00:38:34
enjoy speed climbing. Yeah, it's great.
00:38:37
So, have you given up your um dreams of
00:38:39
becoming an Olympian with speed
00:38:41
climbing?
00:38:41
>> Uh, yeah.
00:38:42
>> And and now that sort of transferred and
00:38:44
now your your dream is to eventually be
00:38:46
the best death diver in the world.
00:38:50
>> Yeah. I I wouldn't even mind if I wasn't
00:38:52
the best. Like, I'm just going and
00:38:54
traveling to these amazing spots. And
00:38:57
that's what I enjoy most, just exploring
00:38:59
and finding stuff that no one's ever
00:39:02
jumped before. The world record has
00:39:04
always enticed me because I think I have
00:39:06
the capability capability to do it, but
00:39:09
it hasn't been like uh solidified in my
00:39:11
mind. I would say like the 40 club like
00:39:14
I'm like I'm definitely doing 40 club
00:39:16
like this year, but with the world
00:39:18
record I'm like not not sure.
00:39:20
>> What is the current world record?
00:39:22
>> It's 48 m.
00:39:23
>> Right.
00:39:23
>> What's the um what's the bungee platform
00:39:26
on the Oakland Harbor Bridge?
00:39:27
>> That's 40.
00:39:28
>> 40. Oh, that's only 40.
00:39:30
>> Yeah. Oh,
00:39:30
>> so you've done that height? Yeah.
00:39:34
>> Yep.
00:39:35
>> If if you were allowed to, would you
00:39:37
would you do 40 off the bungee platform
00:39:39
on the Oakland Harbor Bridge? You'd
00:39:40
never be allowed to. It would never be.
00:39:42
>> Well, I actually got offered in January.
00:39:44
They were going to do an ad campaign and
00:39:46
I think I was going to jump it with
00:39:48
someone else jumping it with a rope and
00:39:50
then obviously I would have kept going
00:39:52
and it was getting all set up. Um but
00:39:55
then like health and safety said no, we
00:39:57
actually can't allow this. But I like I
00:40:00
said yes straight away. Like I was so
00:40:02
keen to that. That's actually my dream
00:40:04
actually to dodge a bungee. I wanted to
00:40:05
do the Queenstown one which is like 44
00:40:08
meters. So I'd have to train a lot. But
00:40:09
that's way more scenic. The Oakland
00:40:10
Harbor Bridge is ugly. So like um I'm
00:40:15
not too sad.
00:40:16
>> But the Queenstown one, yeah, that looks
00:40:18
amazing.
00:40:19
>> But there there's unfortunate occasions
00:40:21
that happen from time to time where
00:40:22
someone will park their car on the
00:40:24
Oakland Harbor Bridge and jump over the
00:40:25
barrier as a suicide attempt. And more
00:40:29
often than not, they're successful. How
00:40:30
how how do you not die?
00:40:33
>> Is it is it the technique?
00:40:35
>> Yeah, technique and conditioning and
00:40:37
training. Like, you know, their intent
00:40:39
is to kill themsel. Uh, and they're
00:40:42
probably going to hit the water a bit
00:40:43
limp. You know, I'm tensing as hard as I
00:40:45
can and like got full focus on
00:40:47
surviving. Um, and they're also like
00:40:50
landing like probably like
00:40:53
back heavy, like landing flat on their
00:40:55
back. Like if I jump from 40 landing on
00:40:58
my back, I'm probably dead as well.
00:40:59
>> Or on my head. Um
00:41:02
yeah, there's definitely like if you
00:41:03
don't land right, you're going to die.
00:41:04
Even from 20, like people have died.
00:41:07
>> Yeah.
00:41:10
>> Is fear something that you try to
00:41:11
eliminate or something that you work
00:41:13
with?
00:41:14
>> Um I'd say something that I work with.
00:41:16
Like it's very um
00:41:18
like if I ever went to uni I' or like
00:41:21
not even just uni I'd like to study the
00:41:24
process of before like when you're
00:41:26
filled with fear. I talk to my mate a
00:41:28
lot Ned about this like he's always up
00:41:30
there with me before I jump like man I
00:41:33
am just so scared right now like I can't
00:41:35
believe I'm actually going to do this.
00:41:37
Um and then that process of okay I'm
00:41:39
going to start my countdown and I've
00:41:42
never ever backed out of countdown. No
00:41:43
one does. like the ritual's lost, like
00:41:45
you can't do it. And then, you know, you
00:41:48
hit that flow state, you've jumped,
00:41:49
you've landed, you're just filled with
00:41:51
joy, and it's like that process from
00:41:52
being so so scared is like, yeah, I
00:41:56
guess I I work with it.
00:41:58
>> Yeah.
00:41:58
>> Yeah. What is the full process before
00:42:00
each jump?
00:42:01
>> Um, I give like I'm really organized
00:42:05
with my people. Like depending on who's
00:42:07
coming, I'm like before we even get the
00:42:08
spot, I'm like he's going to be doing
00:42:10
this, he's going to be doing this, she's
00:42:11
going to be doing that. um like filming
00:42:13
angles, safety in the water,
00:42:17
someone up there with me as just mental
00:42:19
support. And then the most
00:42:21
nerve-wracking part is just climbing up
00:42:23
or not not like physically climbing like
00:42:26
if there's stairs just even walking
00:42:27
every step you're like I'm going to be
00:42:28
descending this soon onto my face. It's
00:42:31
like wow. Okay. Um and then just I
00:42:36
usually throw about five or five to 10
00:42:38
rocks, but my final three rocks is like
00:42:40
a ritual now. I'll say three rocks and
00:42:43
after that last one I'm following it. I
00:42:45
want to Yeah. Um and then I start my
00:42:49
countdown from usually three. I've
00:42:51
locked in 3 2 1 send it. I just just go
00:42:56
for it. Yeah.
00:42:59
>> Have you ever landed and thought I
00:43:02
dodged a bullet that time?
00:43:04
>> Yes. Um
00:43:07
actually after I did my eye, the um
00:43:10
doctor gave me the all clear to jump
00:43:12
again and I just went and did a 31 m and
00:43:16
I nearly hit my eye again. Like I had a
00:43:18
cut right under. I'm like, "Oh, if I hit
00:43:20
my eye again, that would have been it."
00:43:22
Like my the vision would have been real
00:43:25
bad. So I'm like, "Okay, like it was
00:43:28
just like a lesson, you know? I'm like,
00:43:30
"Okay, I'm I'm good. I'm just not going
00:43:33
to do that again."
00:43:33
>> Mhm.
00:43:34
um practice my technique so I never hit
00:43:36
my eye again, which I haven't hit it
00:43:38
since then.
00:43:39
>> When you when you see a medical
00:43:41
professional and you tell them how you
00:43:42
got injured, what's the reaction like?
00:43:44
>> Oh, I love it cuz they never believe how
00:43:47
high I've jumped like when I coughed up
00:43:50
blood. I went to the doctor just in case
00:43:52
I did something to my lungs and they're
00:43:53
like, "How high did you jump?" I'm like,
00:43:55
"35 m 115 ft." No. And then I show them
00:43:59
the video. They're Oh. Um, and they're
00:44:03
like, "Well, that was actually pretty
00:44:04
cool."
00:44:06
I'm lucky to have good doctors.
00:44:08
Actually, overseas in France, that was
00:44:10
really hard cuz I don't speak English,
00:44:12
but they were like, "Oh, you're an
00:44:13
idiot."
00:44:15
>> But, uh, New Zealand, it's been good.
00:44:17
Um,
00:44:19
you talked before about the um the steps
00:44:20
and the safety process and the checks
00:44:22
and balances that you do, but have you
00:44:24
ever um stood there and thought not
00:44:26
today and walked away just because of a
00:44:28
like an internal feeling or a vibe?
00:44:32
Um,
00:44:35
like if I So once I've done all those
00:44:38
safety checks, like I said, the depth
00:44:39
checks and throwing rocks and I've
00:44:40
locked into it. No, I wouldn't say I've
00:44:43
ever bailed. I would either bail when
00:44:46
I've chucked rocks, I'm like, "Nah, not
00:44:48
today." But once I'm climbing up with
00:44:51
all my then everyone's filming, I'm
00:44:52
like, "No, I've never bailed."
00:44:56
>> It's just like I can't have indecision.
00:44:59
It's like the, you know, when I was
00:45:01
crying the day before, I was crying cuz
00:45:03
I knew I was jumping like there was no
00:45:06
way unless the weather had suddenly
00:45:09
changed or something. Um, yeah. I just
00:45:11
got to have 100% certainty. It's the 40
00:45:13
meter as well. Like I knew I was doing
00:45:15
40 like
00:45:18
um yeah, nothing was going to change my
00:45:20
mind.
00:45:21
>> Has has doing this and getting better
00:45:23
and better at it made you feel
00:45:24
invincible or just more aware of how
00:45:26
fragile you are?
00:45:27
>> Oh yeah, definitely how fragile I am.
00:45:29
Cuz even from lower heights, I've had
00:45:30
injuries and I'm like, "Oh, respect
00:45:33
every height you jump. Even 10 oh no, 10
00:45:35
meters, you can land however you like,
00:45:37
but maybe 15 plus." Um yeah, respect
00:45:41
respect the height. land properly.
00:45:44
>> Yeah.
00:45:45
>> Unbelievable. Um,
00:45:48
and has the sport made you more afraid
00:45:51
of death or more at peace with it?
00:45:56
>> Oh, it's probably neutral. Like I've
00:45:57
never had a like jump where I thought,
00:46:00
"Oh, this could be it really." So, yeah,
00:46:04
I really don't want to die. And I didn't
00:46:06
want to die before it either. So, it's
00:46:08
probably just neutral the same. How long
00:46:10
can you realistically do this for?
00:46:14
>> Um,
00:46:16
yeah, probably until I have kids.
00:46:19
I don't know.
00:46:20
>> Well, that was going to be my next
00:46:21
question. Like, what would make you
00:46:22
stop? And maybe that's the answer.
00:46:25
>> No, I I told my girlfriend that um when
00:46:28
we have kids, I won't do anything above
00:46:30
27. And I set 27 cuz that's the Red Bull
00:46:33
diving height. So, I'd always like to if
00:46:35
the Red Bull diving boards come back to
00:46:36
New Zealand, I'm going to jump them.
00:46:37
though like no matter like what
00:46:41
circumstance
00:46:42
>> cuz
00:46:44
you've talked about the nerves and the
00:46:45
anxiety that you feel leading up to it
00:46:47
and um you're pushing through that. I
00:46:48
think that's really cool and really
00:46:49
commendable. But yeah, what's a fun
00:46:51
height for you?
00:46:52
>> A fun height?
00:46:52
>> Yeah. One where you don't get nerves
00:46:54
climbing up the the platform. You just
00:46:56
feel excitement. Oh, like just full
00:46:58
boosting like a massive run up of 20 oh
00:47:03
like oh probably 20 22 m is like amazing
00:47:07
cuz anything lower you don't have enough
00:47:09
air time. You're like oh I wish that was
00:47:11
that lasted a bit longer but 20 or 22
00:47:14
you're like oh man birds are chirping
00:47:16
around me flying around. So yeah that
00:47:18
that height's really fun.
00:47:20
>> Is there a height where you'd say no
00:47:22
that's it that's the line? Oh, you play
00:47:25
anything above 52.
00:47:27
>> Um.
00:47:28
>> Wow.
00:47:29
>> Yeah.
00:47:30
>> Why?
00:47:31
>> Oh, like personally,
00:47:34
well, the world record's 48. So, like if
00:47:36
I was to break it, I'm going to probably
00:47:37
do 50. Um, not no I'm not claiming
00:47:41
anything, but anything higher than that,
00:47:44
I'm like, yeah, that's just getting too
00:47:46
much. And
00:47:50
I don't know what height's terminal
00:47:52
velocity. I think it's probably way off.
00:47:53
So like 200 m is terminal velocity, but
00:47:56
I think that is getting a bit silly
00:47:59
>> when you're saying, "Okay, above 50."
00:48:02
Yeah. I think it's just too much.
00:48:03
>> It's tempting fate.
00:48:04
>> Yeah.
00:48:05
>> Yeah. How do you know when ambition is
00:48:06
outpacing common sense?
00:48:09
>> Uh
00:48:12
probably when I'm like just hurting
00:48:14
myself a lot. Um, I think I don't know
00:48:17
if I'm answering that question right,
00:48:19
but like
00:48:23
if there's like a something like a
00:48:25
massive gap or something and there's
00:48:28
even a 20% chance of getting severely
00:48:31
injured, I'm like, "No, common like I
00:48:33
got to use my common sense. I'm not
00:48:35
taking
00:48:36
uh like an 80% chance of survival rate.
00:48:39
I want to I want to have aund or like 99
00:48:42
cuz there's always like somewhat of a
00:48:43
risk like with everything. But yeah, as
00:48:45
soon as you start taking those high
00:48:47
percentage risks, I'm like, no, you got
00:48:49
to be confident in your ability
00:48:51
>> that you're you're gonna make it.
00:48:55
>> I I think you answered that per I mean,
00:48:57
jeez, whatever however way you answered
00:48:59
it was going to be the perfect answer
00:49:00
because it's your truth. But I I think
00:49:02
it's good like you're not getting ego
00:49:03
get in the way. You're not doing it for
00:49:04
other people. You're not doing it for
00:49:06
the clicks. Um you're staying well
00:49:07
within uh like what your comfort or
00:49:11
talent level is.
00:49:12
>> Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Like I learned that
00:49:14
through mountain biking. I would use I
00:49:16
used to send stuff like yeah my balls
00:49:19
are up here but my skill was down here
00:49:22
and I'd crash and break bones
00:49:24
and then like I'm never taking that
00:49:27
mindset to anything else. Um I want to
00:49:29
be well equipped before doing something
00:49:32
um that's difficult.
00:49:35
>> You you um you do need big balls for for
00:49:37
what you do though. But I suppose it's
00:49:39
slightly axis of um you know talent and
00:49:42
ability level but also you know the
00:49:44
courage.
00:49:45
>> Yeah. Yeah. I wish it actually did
00:49:46
equivalate to ball size. That would be
00:49:48
that would be cool.
00:49:51
>> Who who who tells who in your life tells
00:49:53
you the truth when you need to hear it.
00:49:56
Your partner, your mom?
00:49:58
>> Uh oh. It's always my dad. No. He always
00:50:01
says, "Okay, you got to start doing
00:50:03
this." Or Yeah. My girlfriend as well.
00:50:08
Um, but other than that, yeah, probably
00:50:10
just parents and partner
00:50:12
>> cuz I think
00:50:14
outside of them, like my core
00:50:19
close people, I guess, like people can't
00:50:21
really tell me what to do. Um, cuz they
00:50:24
haven't experienced what I've
00:50:25
experienced, but they've like been with
00:50:26
me the whole journey, then they actually
00:50:28
understand a lot more.
00:50:30
>> Yeah.
00:50:31
Is there anything that throwing yourself
00:50:33
off um cliffs and dams
00:50:37
has taught you about everyday life? Like
00:50:40
anything transferable?
00:50:41
>> Oh yeah, definitely. That
00:50:45
like I wish that I relaxed a lot more
00:50:48
through life before jumping.
00:50:52
I feel way more grateful
00:50:55
uh being in the position I am just
00:50:58
exploring and traveling like even
00:51:01
through school you know I was such a
00:51:03
competitive person and all I wanted to
00:51:05
do was make the first 15 and like it
00:51:08
took such a mental toll out of every
00:51:09
single day and I think a lot of people
00:51:11
have those mental tolls where
00:51:14
something's happened or they're worrying
00:51:16
I think yeah I just wish I was present
00:51:20
way more before I started jumping and
00:51:22
just living life every single day
00:51:24
>> uh in the moment. And um yeah,
00:51:28
>> what's I mean, you're still really
00:51:29
young, so you've still discovered that
00:51:30
as a young at a young age.
00:51:33
>> Yeah. Which is good.
00:51:34
>> I don't like telling people what to do
00:51:35
cuz I'm only 21. I don't I don't think I
00:51:38
deserve to tell people what to do. Um
00:51:40
leave that up to the the elders.
00:51:43
>> The elders.
00:51:45
Um
00:51:47
uh
00:51:49
uh um what do we got here? What what
00:51:52
would you say your best and worst habits
00:51:54
are?
00:51:55
>> Oh um
00:51:58
I think best habit is that I'm like on
00:52:02
any given day I'm just willing to wake
00:52:05
up early to do something like Yeah. I
00:52:08
think and also filling up my day like
00:52:10
I'm I try to be as productive and as I
00:52:12
can and I think some people have it some
00:52:15
people don't where like if I have a day
00:52:17
where I'm doing nothing I feel awful
00:52:20
like even on rest days I'm climbing I'm
00:52:22
going for a bike ride hanging out with
00:52:24
mates like I'm never going to sit
00:52:27
in front of the TV on a couch watching
00:52:29
Netflix I don't really watch Netflix or
00:52:31
anything like that anyway but um I think
00:52:34
that's a good habit
00:52:36
>> um a bad habit it.
00:52:39
Oh, I drink a lot of chocolate milk.
00:52:42
It's not It's not healthy. And even
00:52:45
coffee now, like I discovered coffee and
00:52:47
I love it so much. And I'm like I don't
00:52:49
want that to be the excitement in my
00:52:51
day, you know, a coffee. I just want to
00:52:53
be able to drink it and not like have
00:52:55
all that dopamine. I don't know.
00:52:57
>> Are you a drinker or not?
00:52:59
>> Like alcohol?
00:53:00
>> Yeah.
00:53:00
>> Oh, nah. Well, on occasion, maybe like a
00:53:04
couple times a year. I just had my 21st,
00:53:06
so I did my Yi and I thought I did a
00:53:09
pretty impressive time for not being a
00:53:10
drinker. Um, but yeah,
00:53:14
>> how much how long was it?
00:53:15
>> I was 2 and a half minutes. Some Some
00:53:17
people may laugh, but I thought I
00:53:19
thought it was pretty good.
00:53:20
>> No judgment here. I think mine was about
00:53:22
8 minutes.
00:53:22
>> Okay, I did it with Space as well,
00:53:24
apparently. That's a hard hard one.
00:53:26
>> Yeah, it's a weird tradition, isn't it?
00:53:29
>> Yeah,
00:53:29
>> it's a strange I I don't I maybe it's a
00:53:31
thing in Australia as well, but I think
00:53:33
it's definitely more of a New Zealand
00:53:34
thing. It's a Yeah, like drinking 2 L of
00:53:38
beer as fast as what you can doesn't
00:53:40
seem like the most sensible thing.
00:53:41
>> But yeah, I don't I think drinking like
00:53:43
I don't think people should do it every
00:53:44
weekend. Again, I don't want to tell
00:53:45
people what to do, but I think um on
00:53:47
occasion like I do it for a birthday
00:53:49
party and after a world cup or a record,
00:53:53
y I have a few beers just to celebrate
00:53:55
and really I think people need to
00:53:57
celebrate their wins. People just move
00:53:58
on to the next goal too quickly. just
00:54:00
let it soak in and enjoy that moment
00:54:03
>> and then you can move on. But
00:54:06
>> yeah,
00:54:07
>> is there any mistake that you wish you
00:54:09
could go back and correct, diving
00:54:11
related or non-diving related?
00:54:16
>> Um,
00:54:19
no. I've never said I had regrets really
00:54:23
ever. I don't think there's any mistakes
00:54:25
that I would like to undo. I think Yeah.
00:54:31
If you're Do you have any siblings?
00:54:33
>> Yeah, I have four.
00:54:34
>> Four. Older, younger.
00:54:36
>> Yeah, I have one older sister. She lives
00:54:37
in Thailand. So, it's pretty cool being
00:54:39
able to have an excuse to travel there.
00:54:42
Um, and then three younger ones. Um,
00:54:45
yeah. 18-year-old, 11-year-old brother,
00:54:47
and a 9-year-old sister as well.
00:54:49
>> What do they make of what you do?
00:54:51
>> Oh, I think they're pretty psyched. My
00:54:52
older sister doesn't understand it.
00:54:54
Like, I haven't I don't see her very
00:54:56
often. Um, but yeah, my little brother's
00:54:59
doing it a bit.
00:55:00
>> The 11-year-old.
00:55:02
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:55:02
>> Oh god, must be freaking out.
00:55:05
>> Yeah. But I think uh they appreciate the
00:55:09
um like the adventure. Like I just I
00:55:12
just take him out, sleep in hammocks,
00:55:14
you know, for the night. Like I just go
00:55:15
into remote places with him. And he's
00:55:17
just he's just so keen and I love it and
00:55:19
I love taking him out. And same with my
00:55:22
other sisters as well. They're we're
00:55:24
we're a big wake surfing family behind a
00:55:26
boat. So yeah, we all like adventure and
00:55:28
I want to like help them through that as
00:55:30
well. I want them to
00:55:32
>> do as much stuff as they can while
00:55:34
they're young.
00:55:35
>> Yeah. Not like I actually hate YouTube
00:55:38
shorts for kids cuz you can't really
00:55:40
block YouTube and they're just
00:55:42
scrolling. So as long as you're off
00:55:44
that, I'm happy.
00:55:46
If if um your siblings all got together
00:55:48
and came up with um three separate words
00:55:51
to describe you as as a brother, as a
00:55:54
man, uh what would you like those three
00:55:56
words to be?
00:55:57
>> Um
00:56:00
I'm hoping adventurous.
00:56:02
Um
00:56:05
I'd say hopefully caring as well. Um
00:56:11
I think they would definitely say brave
00:56:12
as well.
00:56:14
>> Oh, no [ __ ] No one could dispute that
00:56:16
one.
00:56:17
>> Yeah.
00:56:17
>> Yeah. Are you proud of yourself?
00:56:19
>> Yeah. No, I'm like psyched on what I've
00:56:21
done so far and
00:56:24
like I'm just truly grateful for the
00:56:26
life that God has given me and like my
00:56:29
dad, he's supported me so much like
00:56:30
financially and um just like wisdom and
00:56:34
all that. So yeah, um I my girlfriend I
00:56:37
have as well just yeah, it's been it's
00:56:40
been great just being able to jump off
00:56:41
cliffs and enjoy life and travel and see
00:56:43
stuff that no one else gets to see.
00:56:46
>> And the rest of 2026, what does that
00:56:48
hold for you?
00:56:50
>> Um I'm going to be going to the States
00:56:52
in June and doing a cliff tour around
00:56:54
there. The exact same like kind of
00:56:56
people that I did in Europe last year.
00:56:58
Um I'm just going to be doing all the
00:57:00
iconic spots, all the people that I
00:57:02
watched when I was younger growing up.
00:57:03
gonna see all the jumps that they did
00:57:04
and do those. Um, I got invited back to
00:57:08
the world's highest odds comp. So, be
00:57:11
going to Norway to do that. And yeah,
00:57:14
just more traveling, pushing and Oh,
00:57:16
definitely working still. I work at
00:57:17
Zorb, so going to be doing that probably
00:57:20
until I start traveling.
00:57:22
>> Zorb as in the downhill.
00:57:24
>> Yeah, the balls.
00:57:25
>> Right. Right. Right.
00:57:25
>> Yeah. Yeah.
00:57:26
>> Whereabouts in Toadong?
00:57:27
>> Uh, it's in Rooua.
00:57:28
>> All right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:57:30
>> Yeah. So, I just commute there every day
00:57:31
and
00:57:31
>> every damn day. Yeah.
00:57:34
>> How far is that commute?
00:57:35
>> Oh, it's like 50 minutes. So,
00:57:36
>> right. Why don't you move?
00:57:39
>> Oh, it's a good question. I think it
00:57:41
runs in my family. Like my granddad
00:57:44
traveled an hour every day. My dad
00:57:46
travels from Toddonga to Roou every day
00:57:48
as well. And um yeah,
00:57:52
>> for for some people you'd for some
00:57:54
people going um going downhill in Rooua
00:57:56
and Aorb will be the most extreme thing
00:57:58
they do in their life. Um yeah. Yeah.
00:58:02
Does that make you laugh?
00:58:03
>> Yeah. Like it's crazy. Some Americans
00:58:05
come over and Yeah. I'm singling out the
00:58:08
Americans. They're like, "We came to New
00:58:09
Zealand just to do this." I'm like, "Are
00:58:11
you serious?"
00:58:12
>> Oh, I should is really fun. I don't want
00:58:15
to like throw a shade on it, but
00:58:16
>> Yeah. Yeah. No, it is. It's heaps of
00:58:19
fun, but a lot of people be real nervous
00:58:20
doing that. Like that'd be the edge of
00:58:22
their
00:58:22
>> Yeah.
00:58:23
>> the edge of their um you know, their
00:58:26
limits. Like when people are scared to
00:58:28
get in or they want to get out the ball,
00:58:29
I'm like like really
00:58:32
and so I just zip them up and push them
00:58:34
down like and then they enjoy it. I'm
00:58:35
like man come on.
00:58:37
>> Um they must be a really good employer
00:58:39
in terms of giving you time off work and
00:58:41
allowing you to do what you love.
00:58:43
>> Yeah. So I I've worked the past four
00:58:45
summers there. Um so when it comes to
00:58:48
winter, I haven't had a winter in like
00:58:50
four years. So just um work at Zorb,
00:58:52
save up all the cash and then go travel
00:58:55
from like May to September and then come
00:58:59
back to Zorb. Um so it's really handy
00:59:01
and I was lucky enough to go help set up
00:59:03
the first in Norway
00:59:06
um or in Europe actually. So that helped
00:59:08
with the dods cuz it's the national
00:59:09
sport. So I got to learn everything
00:59:11
there while working. So it was good.
00:59:14
>> So when you go on these overseas
00:59:15
excursions like are you are you a big
00:59:17
deal in these in these circles? like a
00:59:20
people like um ah Fizzy Sands.
00:59:22
>> Yeah. When I get to meet all the other
00:59:23
cliff jumpers, we're all like psyched to
00:59:25
see each other. Um
00:59:27
>> like I just came back from Tasmania
00:59:29
where they hosted a comp down there and
00:59:31
got to see everyone from Europe, from
00:59:33
the States, and now they're coming over
00:59:35
here. I've got the world record holder
00:59:37
coming over in March and
00:59:38
>> oh the community, it just makes the
00:59:40
world so much smaller. Like everyone's
00:59:41
just traveling everywhere to see each
00:59:42
other.
00:59:44
>> Um yeah, it's awesome.
00:59:46
>> Yeah, I it's cool when you meet
00:59:47
like-minded people. you you know you
00:59:49
find your tribe.
00:59:50
>> Yeah. When when they're just positive
00:59:52
and just ready to go send some cliffs,
00:59:54
it's like it's awesome.
00:59:58
>> When when this all finishes for you, um
01:00:00
yeah, what will give you the same sort
01:00:02
of rush or excitement in life?
01:00:05
>> H I have no idea. Maybe like seeing it
01:00:08
through other people like I feel really
01:00:11
great when we host a an amazing cliff
01:00:13
tour in a great location and everyone's
01:00:15
just got smiles on their face. I'm like,
01:00:16
"Yes, we've done our job. got them
01:00:18
psyched. Um, they're out in God's
01:00:21
creation, so like influencing that way.
01:00:23
Um, that gives me a pretty big rush.
01:00:26
Even being safety in the water, you got
01:00:27
the GoPro. You don't really look at the
01:00:29
GoPro cuz you want to watch it, but um,
01:00:31
you just see them come down and hit the
01:00:32
water like real hard. They come up,
01:00:34
celebrate. It's just Oh,
01:00:36
>> so happy for them.
01:00:38
>> Yeah. it.
01:00:41
If the unthinkable happened and um this
01:00:44
thing that you love doing somehow costed
01:00:46
you your life, what would you what would
01:00:48
you like people to say? Would you like
01:00:49
people to say he died doing what he
01:00:51
loves?
01:00:52
>> You know, you must have heard that
01:00:54
saying before.
01:00:54
>> Yeah. Um
01:00:58
yeah, I guess so. that um
01:01:02
I I just if I ever got to that stage, I
01:01:05
think I would have pushed the boundaries
01:01:07
too far.
01:01:09
>> Um
01:01:10
so it's kind of hard to say.
01:01:13
>> Yeah,
01:01:14
>> cuz yeah, if I I think I would have been
01:01:16
stupid to kill myself doing this sport.
01:01:19
Like it it is it is hard to do if you
01:01:21
know what you're doing. But yeah, I
01:01:23
guess I died doing what I love. M
01:01:26
>> yeah,
01:01:28
>> I think this is probably where we'll end
01:01:30
it. Is Is there anything that you wanted
01:01:32
me to ask that we haven't covered on the
01:01:34
podcast today?
01:01:35
>> No, we've covered a lot. So,
01:01:36
>> yeah, I I think it's been really great.
01:01:38
It's um So, for me, it's like a
01:01:40
completely different understanding of of
01:01:41
what you do. I understand it's all
01:01:43
calculated and measured.
01:01:44
>> No, it's great. That's what I wanted. I
01:01:46
hope all the viewers think the same.
01:01:48
>> Less bad comments saying that I don't
01:01:51
know what I'm doing. So,
01:01:53
>> you don't read the comments anyway.
01:01:54
>> Yeah, I don't read. But people read them
01:01:56
for me and they're like, "Yo, do you see
01:01:57
this comment?" I'm like, "No." And
01:01:58
they're like, they just like tell me
01:02:00
like, "Oh, okay."
01:02:02
>> Yeah. But but you're um you've got your
01:02:04
head screwed on the right way. E like
01:02:05
that takes a lot of um mental fortitude
01:02:07
to not read the comments. People say
01:02:09
don't read the comments, but if you know
01:02:11
people are talking [ __ ] about you, it's
01:02:12
like you it's it takes every every fiber
01:02:15
of your being and every ounce of
01:02:17
strength to not read them.
01:02:19
>> Yeah. I'm like not too fast. I just
01:02:23
Yeah. I don't know. Even if people like
01:02:25
told me straight up they don't like what
01:02:27
I'm doing. Like, well, okay. What do you
01:02:30
want me to do? You want me to like I'm
01:02:32
not going to stop jumping because you
01:02:34
don't like it.
01:02:36
Like, I think people care too much about
01:02:37
what other people think. Um, so just yo,
01:02:41
for people that do think like that, just
01:02:44
um care less. I don't know. I don't know
01:02:46
what to say about that.
01:02:47
>> Where where does that strength of
01:02:48
character come from? It's such a Is that
01:02:49
connected to your faith, do you think?
01:02:51
>> Uh, yeah. Yeah. Uh maybe I think my
01:02:54
dad's the same. Like he'll just
01:02:57
like he he absolutely doesn't care. Uh
01:03:00
and I think people that put themselves
01:03:02
out there have to have that mental
01:03:03
strength otherwise you're going to get
01:03:05
eaten up cuz there is some hateful
01:03:08
people out there which I've realized
01:03:10
>> and um yeah just people are going to
01:03:14
make more like haters going to make more
01:03:16
noise than the people that enjoy it. So
01:03:19
>> just listen to the people that like it.
01:03:21
>> Oh mate, I've got I've got a theory. If
01:03:22
you don't want um anyone to hate you or
01:03:24
talk negatively about you online, um
01:03:26
there's a way to do it and that's just
01:03:27
don't do anything with your own life.
01:03:29
Don't do anything. Don't say anything.
01:03:31
Don't post anything. Um but it's not
01:03:33
living a life, is it?
01:03:34
>> Yeah. Like I only post cuz Yeah. I just
01:03:37
want to show the people that really do
01:03:39
like it what I'm up to. And all the
01:03:40
cliff jumps like, "Yo, he just did 40
01:03:42
m." I'm like, "Yeah, thanks, man." And
01:03:44
then I want to see what they're doing as
01:03:45
well. Like I got a whole lot of mates in
01:03:46
Aussie at the moment. Eight people just
01:03:49
did 31 m like bang bang bang. And I'm
01:03:51
like, "Oh, I can't wait to see it." But
01:03:53
I'm never going to tell people what to
01:03:54
do. I'm like, "Oh." Cuz people ask like,
01:03:57
"Should I do this jump?" And I'm like,
01:03:58
"Oh." Like that is the worst question I
01:04:00
get asked like a DM. I'm like, "Should I
01:04:02
do this?" And I'm like, "I have no idea
01:04:04
who you are. I have no idea what you've
01:04:05
done in the past." And usually that's
01:04:08
why I tell people. I'm like, "Can you
01:04:09
show me videos or some evidence?" Um, so
01:04:13
that's probably the hardest question I
01:04:14
get asked.
01:04:16
>> Well, it's been really nice to connect
01:04:18
with you today. Um, my impression of you
01:04:20
in the hour that we've been talking is
01:04:21
that you're like a sensible young man.
01:04:23
Uh, you got your head screwed on the
01:04:24
right way and you're living your life to
01:04:26
the best of your ability and um, you're
01:04:28
making the most of every opportunity and
01:04:30
who can argue with that.
01:04:32
>> Yeah, it's been great. Thank you for
01:04:33
having me.
01:04:33
>> Fizzy Sins Flynn Chism. Cheers, mate.
01:04:36
Thanks for coming on the podcast.
01:04:37
>> Thank you.
01:04:38
>> Good luck.
