visual element to this no I had eye surgery about a month ago which was actually a game changer I didn't have

particularly stuffed eyes I just couldn't read my cell phone you know the small print and it just annoyed me

having all these plus one glasses everywhere and my long Vision was awesome are you in that phase now oh my

God such a pain in the ass man and so I had this fantastic surgery where they take your lens out they put new lenses

in it's been awesome but I'm just finding I'm just settling down with it

so I have to eye drop and Carry On And if it's quite a bright day and lights

sort of um aggravate them a bit but no I'm very emotionally feel stable but I
00:01:43
may not look it but I'm really wrapped with the surgery cuz you're you're uh
00:01:47
you're you're 10 years older than me um but my my eyesight in the last year
00:01:52
alarmingly quick it's gone downhill my favorite restaurant is an Italian place
00:01:55
called prago I can't read the menus there anymore I know I know um I and that you wait till you live with that

for about 5 years and then you'll just say enough and it was only through a friend of mine who's exactly the same
00:02:06
age as me who went off and had it done I went you what you had your lenses someone went into your eye and took out

your natural lens and put another one in she said yeah happens all the time everyone's doing it so if you see an

older person with no glasses you know they've probably had the surgery what a great way to start it but

the glasses thing I I I was embarrassed about I don't know why maybe there stigma of glasses or feeling of old age

or something but I was in the the supermarket aisle with the magazines and the stationer and the glasses and

there's no one else in the aisle so I thought I'm going to try some on um so I

tried on the plus ones and it was like a moment yeah I the font on my phone looked huge all of a sudden but now

Supermarket shopping is such a different experience for me because you know how sometimes on the little little type on

the price tickets and they'll say it's x amount per kilo you know and I often
00:02:57
look at that as opposed to the bigger price well that was in font so tiny that I just couldn't be bothered putting

getting in my glasses and putting them on and and but now shopping has become quite a different experience because I

can actually see what I'm paying for stuff it's awesome no I'm I'm really

thrilled with that and I can't wait till they fully settled down beig great oh

how good okay so um yeah I want to talk about celebrity Treasure Island oh yeah then we can talk about um the early

years of Mary lambi um maybe the good morning stuff and then the um the transition into being a a business owner

had the stores I thought man you haven't done your research man was seven years ago

wor okay so first of all celebrity celebrity Treasure Island um I'm guessing there's one of three reasons

you went on it's either um for the money the profile or the experience yeah the third experience I

love an adventure I actually love an adventure and I was invited to sort of be part of it because I clearly short of

women of a certain age because you know they like to cover the whole gamut of age and they did ask me a couple years

ago and it just didn't work out with the children I mean my kids now have all
00:04:08
left school so they're fully independent and it's wonderful but then no there was
00:04:12
just too much juggle involved with the three of them they're all quite close in
00:04:15
age my kids and so I thought no no that's not going to work that's not going to work but this time it worked
00:04:20
and I I love the outdoors and I love an adventure and I thought I will not win this so I never went in thinking man I'm

going to take this out no I just wanted to experience it but also to win it you got to be there a long time he like a
00:04:34
month 30 days or something uh yeah I don't know what they knocked it out in the probably about 3 weeks or there

about something I don't know because I clearly like it to the end in fact I've

barely seen an episode so I hope it's cutting well it's edited well at the

time of um recording this I've been sent an advanced episode of the episode where

you get kicked out eliminated um you you haven't seen that no no no no no I haven't to be fair I have seen very few

of them um in fact I've seen one I've just been busy with other stuff and I

so he he had he had like a pass card or whatever you want to call it so he could

have kept you in the competition yeah um and you were under the under the impression that that's what was going to

happen he was going to throw you a Lifeline do you know why I was under that impression because he told me he

was going to save me and I'm That Kind of transparent you know tell it as it is

you know I'm not a backstabby type and I know people say oh Mary it's just a game

and you know Let It Go but actually I think the way you play the game is is reflective quite of who you are and

maybe I'm just old and conservative but I I just do it the old school way you

know inte yeah well I don't know I don't want to sort of beat myself up too much

in in terms of you know Elevate myself too much but in the old days if you said you're going to do something or I'm

going to do something for you hey guess what we did it but I know he kind of was

working within the parameters of the game but still I think if he was not wanting me on the team and I was first

to go and I was the weakest link and all of that man I can accept that and I'm

not two years old he just should have come up to me and said well hey Mary I know I've said I'll save everybody but

actually I'm not going to save you and I'll go that's sweet and so I would have

gone in knowing I am absolutely up for The Chopping Block but the fact and I'm

really embarrassed that a I get I screw up the spelling of Victorious but also I

really genuinely thought he would save me so I got fully shafted I I'm so naive

an pathetic so um at the end uh there was a swearing T by the way was that serious or playful like at the time oh

in route it was pretty playful and I thought it would never make the cut I thought that there is no way that that

will make the cut well there was a lot of beeps through it well there would have to be a number of I but then you

laugh at the end you cackle at the end yeah look it yeah you know like I'm 100

years old I mean get perspective I had um you know I I was still kind of in a State of Shock no one wants to leave but

but and and no time is a good time to leave however you know you are going to leave and when that time does arrive

there's actually quite a lot to process about it all and I wasn't happy the way

that challenge went and everything because I knew the word I just sort of mued up my I us at the end

like um but panicked P how many how many days were you there um that's a really

yeah do you know the thing that really really really really got to me was the lack of sleep I couldn't give a [ __ ]

about the food believe it or not I um it was the lack of sleep man I'm a 9h hour

a night girl and I can't do it on 9 minutes and when those bunks literally are just a few hunks of wood with a bit

of hisy and Sack I was [ __ ] miserable I really was along with you Steve price apparently sat on his and broke it I is

that why um do you think that's part of the reason t e in the same episode that

you get eliminated he sort of TAPS out El out was it the sleeping Arrangement no apparently he was he was hard ass he

he was actually sleeping on the on the floor right yeah so no I I he wasn't on

my team so I didn't actually get to know him particularly well uh and that was

the downside to leaving so reasonably early as I was starting to get to know my people but I never made the merge so

I never got to to see much of the others do you think um part of it like deciding

to let you go rather than stick to his word do you think part of that is like agism

well that's a really good question I don't know as the short answer and you're you're 59 you're 6 next year but

you're um you're incredibly fit and you're in great shape uh well actually I

really was that noise for no no I really overrated my physicality because of course I I rotate around people about my

age right and yeah you fit for age I probably but but but I'm pathetic up against these young fast strong flexible

gorgeous things um who are just starting out in life but I thought no no no I can

take them on I'll be sweet I'll be good I've got endurance man I might not have

speed but man I got endurance and I've got strength man I can push this weight

and that weight and I'll be sweet Mary get a grip I was terrible like I mean I

can hold my own to a degree but and I'm not dumping on someone who's 59 but but

no no it's hard out there in physical land I feel like I mean we've only been

going 10 minutes and you you've made a few like a a few comments about yourself and I don't know

if they're self-deprecating or this this therapy it's this therapy no well you

said you made a comment before you said I'm I'm like a 100 years old and you

said then there's a comment about food and you you know you put to your body is

that self-deprecating or no no no no I'm I'm a realist I mean I could easily take

off 10kgs in fact I think it be in a I'd be in my best interest to um so I accept

that so when I say the food didn't bother me you look at me and think oh well here's a girl who's about 10 over

she could actually deal with I wouldn't think that at all I think you look I

think you look fabulous for your age you look F and healthy and vibrant well yeah

SI to my eyes and you're um you're an exerciser too like you do Adventure

races yeah do I've read an interview with you and you said you saw I mean this feels like one of those things you

say but you never can actually do you saw Richie mcco do one of those God Zone races and you like I want to do that and

they bloody canceled it they've canceled it this year because what I thought I

would do is go down and volunteer um at God's Own and buger me a couple of weeks

ago I found out that the bureaucracy and the cost of the bureaucracy of staging something as awesome and gods own has

just got so expensive that they know can do and it just pisses me off you know you got to

be cones here stop a road here put a dude there put a sign there D and I think oh chill man just let them run

from that tree to that tree and put a bit of health and safety and but just relax these are adults they know what

they're getting in for and I think the fact that has got to a point where awesome and authentic races like God

zone are up on the chopping block cuz they simply can't afford all the [ __ ] all the the paperwork and all

the nonsense required to Stage them under all the regulations that there are and I was really disappointed because I

thought if I go and volunteer and then maybe next year because I've had a few mates do it I

thought yeah I'd be a starter actually for that yeah I thought I'd just start

soft and volley first so what what do you do for fitness these days youve done a bunch of marathons right you've done

London yeah but Susan deoy actually um she was responsible for me doing the third rotor Marathon that I did and she

red me up one day this was about 10 years ago or whenever and she said mate you need Susan on the show have you had

her I would love to have D no no she's cool man she's awesome and she mate I

mate she said what are you doing next week or whatever I said I don't know she

said come and walk the um R marathon with me I went yeah how hard can it be 42k walk I said awesome idea yep I'll be

there and so I get down to we're on the start line she said mate I said mate

here we are and she heads out man first 10ks no problem and then I'm really in
00:13:44
struggle straight I think this walking Malik is hard we get to the back of the pdic you would have done real real a few
00:13:49
times have you no I've never done it never done it it's iconic though when I
00:13:52
was growing up I was in a you running family and Mom and Dad used it was called the Fletch marathon back then and
00:13:57
they used to run it every year but it seems oh but you get though right the know that's brutal man and um so we're
00:14:02
at the back of the paddock right so about the halfway point and her phone rings and it's one of her 300 children
00:14:09
saying Mom Mom Mom something about you've got to pick me up because Dad can't and she hangs up and she goes mate

and I go mate she said we got to run so she says to me at the 25k Mark we're running to the end I mean this is
00:14:26
an individual who had not trained for this so that was my last experience on it was awesome as we came down cuz we're
00:14:33
exactly the same age right she sprinted down the the shoot and she was really good she sort of slowed down for me and
00:14:40
we but we eventually got to the Finish Line she sprinted down Sho didn't care
00:14:43
about the metal she just jumped over into her car off to get her kid she is a legend man how did you guys become

friends we probably just met through I think good morning similar age and just up has across at various dos and things

and I you know I just like her you I sort of gravitate towards that sort of honesty and she's fit and she's at the
00:15:05
top of her game you know back in the day I and she was on um CB Island wasn't she

yeah I was I was going to ask you that next like did you consult her yeah did you you did oh yeah yeah she was she was
00:15:16
really insightful she was great right cuz she she threw a tantrum on it like she like plunked herself down in the
00:15:21
sand in one of the episodes and like had a like a full growing like total attend

it was amazing TV but she's um she was really good she said you know play your

own game I cuz I I just don't have the the bandwith I can't stand that word I

just don't have the capacity to play all the [ __ ] you know Alliance this and

Alliance that and talking to that person not that I just wanted to just get through every single day and be an

honest player and I think she she was sort of of a similar variety she said no you know it's complicated enough without

having to get into those weeds and she sort of advised me on what to take cuz I snuck a whole lot of stuff in I snuck

like what like food supplies no no no I snuck in um lots of earplugs so I had ear plugs for everyone I snuck in a

pillowcase cuz you're not allowed to pillow and I took an extra puffer which
00:16:08
they let me through with but that could create a pillow um I snuck in salt God rice without salt is a terrible thing a
00:16:15
few spices you know just s of bits and Bobs yeah yeah could it's very MSY spices but I could not believe they
00:16:23
didn't find them because it really was like going through an airport when they
00:16:26
were checking our stuff and and I had some stuff confiscated like my big ey shadow pack cuz like it's television

mate standards oh I was going to ask you about the makeup thing because the um the the scenes i' I've seen it didn't
00:16:39
look like you were you were wearing makeup and I I thought probably 70% of the time I was yeah yeah right and yeah
00:16:48
did did many people like sort of wear makeup or it's one of those things you
00:16:52
want to look good on on tell don't you but also there's a lot of downtime
00:16:55
there's tons and tons of downtime and um uh so what else do you do but well you

go for a swim you walk in the woods you you know put your face on yeah I don't

know we just did it just to kill a bit of time yeah so that's um celebrity Treasure Island uh who who who will you

remain like actual friends with do you think oh I think there's probably a hardcore midy was great um Blair's

fantastic uh you know some of those young comedians are absolutely awesome yeah you no no there's it'll be good you

know I I feel with most of them or yeah so okay let's go let's go right back so why did you decide to become a

journalist young Mary you're at school what what did your parents do um well

one's a teacher and one's a nurse they're both actually my father just
00:17:41
died about a month ago actually I'm Sor toar oh oh thank you no no he was in

terrible condition as and I and I mean that in the sense that uh he it's a really terrible thing to watch a parent
00:17:53
who was fit and active and serly really you know in tune and everything just deteriorate I are your parents alive
00:18:00
yeah they thank um how old was your dad in his 80s oh yeah yeah yeah he was about he was a month off turning 86 yeah
00:18:09
yeah you my my parents are both uh both alive mom's 71 she still runs marathons
00:18:12
she's going to be around for a long time Dad's in his late 70s he's in he's in
00:18:15
Wellington he's he's had no Health complications but I'm um I know that
00:18:20
that I need to be more tolerant with them and spend more time with them do make that time up because um oh so he
00:18:26
was based in CR because mom died about s eight years ago and since her death his
00:18:31
deterioration has been pretty obvious and then we moved him into this kind of sumerset thing and I don't know it just
00:18:38
sort of felt like a bit of a holding pen and it was awful and then he got really
00:18:41
C and and those that last month was actually terrible and so people say oh so physically or mentally or both no I
00:18:50
think he was on a bit of a mental declay he was just depressed he just he was so
00:18:55
he was in such pain his body was really shutting down and um he he was depressed
00:19:01
because I'm who wouldn't be actually under those conditions and I don't know
00:19:04
those places just seem like little rabbit Huts all sort of Stack together I don't know I found the whole thing all a
00:19:10
bit depressing too to be fair but anyway he um he died and and I just as sad and
00:19:18
and as sort of you know that that's it that's that generation gone um I'm
00:19:23
really glad he's out of that pain and misery yeah it's a funny kind of weird
00:19:26
thing on your head you missed them and you know sometimes I'll go to pick up
00:19:29
the phone to give them a bell and and then I thought oh of course he's not there but I do have three siblings so

I'm the third of fourth and my sister was my old big sister was fantastic with
00:19:40
him my Andrew my my brother Andrew is down there his boots on the ground so he was there and my other brother Dave
00:19:45
who's in Wellington he um he you know he and I between us you know used to go
00:19:49
down quite a bit and see him so yeah still leaves a big hole though I oh yeah yeah yeah it's s a crazy hole really but

we're tight you know as siblings um we're pretty tight like we're not in
00:19:58
each other's Pockets but there are 12 grandchildren so we've all had a bunch

of kids and we try and get together and it's it's good but the four of us
00:20:08
actually dealt with the estate because one brother's an accountant so he sorted
00:20:12
all that so we didn't have all of that drw to scrap out um you know it's all
00:20:17
been fairly straightforward and yeah as I say we're we're tight and I really
00:20:20
feel for those that are in family situations where there's a rogue sibling and it all just turns nasty

it must be awful CU it's hard enough as it is of course so teacher and a nurse

so you tell them you want to become a journalist uh supportive um well I left University and I decided I was going to
00:20:40
be a lawyer and so I went straight from school because I went to boarding school
00:20:44
down in Christ Church and I did a first year of law at Canterbury and I actually
00:20:50
couldn't stand it I found it really hard really dry it was just grafted and I
00:20:55
didn't connect with it I didn't know any lawyers the family didn't know many
00:20:58
lawyers I just sort of had no relationship I just thought it sounded flash to be you know go off and be a
00:21:02
lawyer so I stopped that I went back to Wellington where Mom and Dad based lived
00:21:07
at home for a bit finished off a ba and then it was really only in the tail end of that ba that I thought I started
00:21:14
working at student radio and there was something about the broadcasting I really liked I didn't really even know
00:21:17
what journalism was and then I said to my parents look there's a journalism course up in ockland I'm I go and do
00:21:22
that what's Journal well no no no they're not as stupid people they knew
00:21:25
what it was but I don't think the career path of it was as obvious all those
00:21:29
years ago and once I got into the journalism School here in Oakland man I thought I have found home
00:21:37
yeah like your tribe your people oh my people and the work and I loved it I actually loved it I would get out of bed
00:21:47
you know at all happy as it wasn't oh god I've got to get to that lecture all that lecture
00:21:53
I just thought yay I'm going to journalism today and so I just it took me a while so if you're panicked about
00:21:59
oh what are your kids going to do or if you're a kid and you're thinking what am
00:22:02
I going to do and my kids are at that stage now I think just give it some time man just give it some time it'll it'll
00:22:07
it'll arrive fall into place yeah yeah so then and then what's your first job
00:22:11
you into print or radio no well fortunately um of the 16 of us that got into the ATI course back in the day I
00:22:18
was the only one interested in broadcast the rest all were more interested in print so when they were trying to find
00:22:24
us work experience and things like that I I sort of had the full choice because no one wanted to go on to radio well I
00:22:31
was particularly keen on radio in those days and so I got placements with radio New Zealand and that when I finished the
00:22:36
course took me to Hamilton and then tomar ranui and then Nelson and then wongi so I did the full rnz Ticky tour
00:22:43
and then after a couple of years of that I won a scholarship to go and work in Japan so I went up to Japan and I worked
00:22:49
as Radio New Zealand's correspondent up there and it was boom time you know the
00:22:53
economy was buzzing and it was all you know big trading partner and all rest and I also taught some English out there
00:23:00
wow and how did you end up on TV and good well I came I came back after three years of being up in Japan and I worked
00:23:05
for communicado uh with Neil Roberts and some people might remember that name and
00:23:10
I worked on a few documentaries and uh big big shows like New Zealand at War I don't know that was pretty epic for the
00:23:18
time we put that together and then one day I read in the paper because I think we had newspapers back then that they
00:23:24
were looking for a host for a thing called good morning and I thought and I was just sort of reading the job
00:23:29
description I thought well that's a bit of me I yeah maybe I could give that a
00:23:33
crack surely and I'd had a bit of TV experience reading the news at local TV
00:23:37
ATV I think we called it then and had doing some other sort of random bits and Bobs and I rang them and they said nah
00:23:44
no we're not interested in you we don't know who you are and go away and I
00:23:49
thought right let's just piss to here because I really do think I I want to be
00:23:54
at least auditioned all I wanted to do was be on the audition list and it was the likes of Paula Ryan and Susie Aken
00:23:59
and Belinda Todd you know these were the big the big names of the day yeah massive names and um so I pested and
00:24:06
pested and I said please end of the day end of the day five minutes that's all I
00:24:10
want it's all I you know just could you give me a go and so they relented and
00:24:14
they said yes okay you can come in at 4:30 but it's just going to be 10 minutes and you know they were just
00:24:20
ticking a box really and the night before I was so stressed about it that I went out on the tailes with a bunch of
00:24:27
friends that doesn't seem like the greatest prep we had such a huge night and I wost into that audition the next
00:24:35
day hung over my hair coming out every direction looking terrible feeling worse and as I got out of the lift Paula Ryan
00:24:46
was coming towards me and she was so beautiful and quaffed and white suited and her hair was mint and I thought what
00:24:54
the [ __ ] am I doing here and I sat down hi yeah I'm the girl who's really pissed

you to be on this audition list and here I am stinking your booze I think I had had a show I know that much and the rest

is the say is history yeah you must have naed it because you did that job um but

there be a lot of people listening or watching to this that won't even remember good morning because um no was
00:25:17
that long ago because I was I left when um I was pregnant with the twins and there 2003 you were on from 1997 to 2003

yes I did seven years didn't I yeah yeah it's crazy crazy I I remember um I
00:25:29
remember watching it me me and JJ we we'd do breakfast radio then we'd go
00:25:32
home and we'd turn the TV on and it was almost like um at the time that you were
00:25:37
on it a lot of it was almost like talk back radio but on TV like you'd have calls so you'd be sitting there and
00:25:43
watching you'd be talking to people on the phone and you you you you didn't
00:25:46
have a very good poker face so you'd be like screwing your it was just it was fantastic to watch and
