I haven't hit the limit yet but I imagine it's not that I hit it although you're verified I'm unverified so 600
00:00:05
like I when it first happened 600 posts you kidding I'm not even out of bed
00:00:10
I'm I'm through a thousand posts before I even step my feet on the floor
00:00:23
all right what is up people of the internet welcome back to another episode of the waveform podcast we're your hosts
00:00:28
I'm Marquez I'm Andrew and I'm David and we've compiled we've been taking notes this whole week about what we wanted to
00:00:34
talk about and it's turned out this is mostly a social media episode we have a
00:00:39
lot to say about a lot of different social networks uh starting with Google plus of course is the hottest one just
00:00:45
kidding uh YouTube fighting some things Twitter fighting some things Reddit fighting some things Instagram fighting
00:00:52
some things uh but first we want to talk about the Zenfone you've
00:00:57
been actually using the Zenfone alongside I can officially say so I've been using this for about two weeks now
00:01:02
yeah it feels kind of like somebody else I want to preface this by saying also
00:01:08
this is the first non-pixel phone I've used since the pixel 3. the three is
00:01:14
when I switched to the pixel lineup and I've only used pixels since then so this is a fairly close to stock Android phone
00:01:20
yes how have you been finding the Zenfone 10 I will start it by saying I really appreciate oh you have all the
00:01:26
fun colors I was just showing the colors what five colors this time yeah five colors blue white black green red yes
00:01:32
blue is hot blue is hot and by hot I mean really subtle it's really cool actually red is really quite bad yeah
00:01:41
yeah I like it the green is like a like bright Pine Green yeah I've been using the green I think we kind of were
00:01:47
wondering if which one's gonna fade the worst because remember the Zenfone 9 had like yeah terrible fading I do think
00:01:53
this back material is gonna not fade as bad they said they made the material better from last year right yes yeah
00:01:59
actually I just said that yeah so I'll start that's just my like summary of the phone okay which is I love the Zenfone 9
00:02:05
shamelessly which is one of my favorite phones ever it won my small phone of the year last year and I could only really come up with
00:02:11
maybe two nitpicks about that phone one is it didn't have wireless charging they
00:02:17
added it to this phone so it's a 30 watt 30 watt wired 15 watt Wireless boom they did that epic the other nitpick was the
00:02:24
back material just like faded so hard I had a red phone within a month keep in mind you own a phone for years within a
00:02:31
month my phone was like dark and used looking like yeah really yeah not in a
00:02:38
good way yeah I'm thinking like after a year two years three years this one's gonna look crazy I mean it probably
00:02:44
bottoms off after a while but that was that was a legit nitpick I had um this phone
00:02:50
it still feels kind of the same like it's a nice touch it's it's got a little texture to it but they told me it's a
00:02:56
different material so I said okay it's a different material it hopefully is a better aging more durable material and
00:03:03
so far that's felt like it's held up to be true as well so I no longer have anything negative to say at all about
00:03:10
this phone that literally just has like the tiniest littlest nitpicks for me but
00:03:15
this phone is incredible I mean that's kind of how I feel I those two things I agree with I said the wireless charging
00:03:20
was a deal breaker for me and I was like man if this had wireless charging I would use it and here we are I'm using
00:03:26
it and I do agree I've I mean I take this to The Climbing Gym it gets chalk all over it I throw it on the ground
00:03:31
I've seen very little wear on the back of it and the Green's really light so I feel like it could show wear very easily
00:03:37
I was hoping I had it with me on you know some hiking over the last week but I didn't um so I didn't get to see if it got that
00:03:44
dirty from there for those of you out of the loop Andrew I said was on vacation when we recorded last week but then his
00:03:51
flight got canceled and now it's a different yeah it was terrible so he's back it was rough he's back we're rescheduling it but but we're back I'm
00:03:57
happy to be here and um but yeah so so far like you said I've loved it it has wireless charging the size I'm getting
00:04:04
used to because I'm not used to something small which I think let's take a minute we were arguing about this beforehand what did you say someone said
00:04:11
on on YouTube or what so there was a lot of comments um I don't know if it was from your Tweet when it got announced or
00:04:17
something but a lot of people are saying like this is a misconception this is not a small phone
00:04:23
we are talking about relative to any other mostly phone any other Android
00:04:29
phone you can get right now it's like one of the smallest ones specifically with Flagship specs it is definitively
00:04:36
I'm pretty sure I can say it's definitively the smallest phone with the Snapdragon 8 gen 2. yeah and it is
00:04:41
definitely the smallest flagship phone you can get that doesn't fold in half the iPhone SE is technically slightly
00:04:47
smaller yeah uh but that's not a flagship phone as someone who's used a lot of phones too like when I type on
00:04:54
this phone the keyboard feels a little bit small sometimes I agree do you have it wait wait before we go forward yeah I
00:05:00
also think one of the complaints of that though was comparing it to the iPhone Mini when it is closer it is closer to the
00:05:07
size of a regular iPhone than the iPhone Mini but it was being compared to that just because it is one of the smaller
00:05:12
Android devices the iPhone is a smaller iOS device the iPhone Mini that's no longer made when it was out it was by a
00:05:20
landslide the smallest flagship phone you could get yeah um currently it is small is what we're trying to see it is a small box it is a
00:05:26
small phone it is my front runner for smallest best small phone of the Year again right now do you think this would be a front runner for just overall best
00:05:34
fun of the year so here's where it gets the best value so I think yes for Best Value 6.99 right yes the same same price
00:05:41
as last year awesome awesome value literally incredible battery life yeah
00:05:46
really good cameras I think in order to be like an overall MVP best phone it's a
00:05:52
little more blurry like I I think you could argue on impact or on overall like
00:05:57
sentiment about a phone yes it's right there uh but I would also want slightly better cameras I would want you know
00:06:03
like I think the cameras are good but I think they're B plus to a minus good where the absolute cream of the crop the
00:06:10
s23 Ultras the ones that have a telephoto camera the iPhone 14 Pros the pixel Pro those those are gonna be a bit
00:06:18
better I mean it doesn't have a telephoto I think that's just one thing it's lacking and it's a small phone and that would be a lot of room to take up
00:06:24
but it's not like a flagship camera system it's right underneath one so it's not going to be the best phone of the
00:06:30
year but it is good at everything it does yeah as a headphone jack on the top I just want to do a quick rundown of
00:06:36
like what's inside this phone right yeah Snapdragon hn2 wireless charging it's 5.9 inches 144 Hertz ip68 headphone jack
00:06:45
30 watt charging like very durable it's got basically everything that anyone
00:06:51
ever asked for and the fact that the battery life is so good when it makes no sense so I'll see for my battery life I
00:06:59
it's the middle of the day I'm at 47 that's because I haven't charged it since yesterday
00:07:05
[Laughter] incredible a day and a half in it almost happened you said 144 Hertz I will mention it is
00:07:12
almost never 144 Hertz okay so you can put it at Auto and it will go up to 144 Hertz only when Game Genie has told it
00:07:20
that it is playing a game that can take advantage of 124 not even on like the home screen not only yeah 220 all the
00:07:27
time well I don't care it's just like they get to say 144 on the Press materials but it's 120 I mean 120s
00:07:34
perfectly fine it's great that's a great photo this is low light at Coney Island the other day that's a really good
00:07:39
picture low light photo yeah I was very impressed I've always really liked asus's cameras even when I did like the
00:07:46
Zenfone 5 or 6 review way back in the day they don't lean super hard into like computational photography HDR stuff
00:07:53
which I think is a strong suit for them because it gives them a little more contrast or a little sharper there's less noise reduction yeah I think they
00:08:00
do well in the test every year as well but yeah it is potentially one of the top four or five phones in this blind or
00:08:07
it get like gets knocked out by the winner and yeah puts up a fight against it which is I think a lot of people would argue like oh so okay why is it
00:08:14
not one of the best Flagship cameras it still has to compete with ultra wide so that's compete with telephoto still has to compete with video it has it does
00:08:20
have it has no telephoto it does have really really great stabilization right which should be obvious if you look at
00:08:26
the giant module almost to the point where it's like it's like too finicky
00:08:32
about being like no no you weren't perfectly still maybe you should take that picture again and I'll look at him be like that looks totally fine but now
00:08:38
I'm worried about it um I remember I just remember walking around just taking like handheld video just like normal not
00:08:43
thinking too hard about it and I played it one played it back it was just like normal 4K 30 not even the super smooth mode and it was just remarkably smooth
00:08:50
and I was like this is as good as I'd want it it's really good yeah six nine and I I still am like how did they get
00:08:56
the 6.99 price point it's crazy that's so cool it's not gonna sell well this is
00:09:01
my thing it's like yeah and actually Aaron he made a video where most of his videos about how this phone won't sell
00:09:06
well and I kind of tend to agree but I am so happy that Asus has continued to spend on and make money or to to make
00:09:14
the effort to make this phone good and small because it takes extra work and extra engineering to fit it in a small
00:09:20
space and still make it so good and uh it's gonna be in the US this year
00:09:26
they're actually going to launch at quarter three which is cool I don't know if it's going to be in a bunch of carrier stores or maybe just one or two you that would be nice but yeah it's
00:09:33
it's not going to oversell the big screen because what do people like buying big screen big screen so yeah I
00:09:39
don't know Claire's using an s10e and she was like I want this as my next phone S10 is a really good parallel because this also has the fingerprint
00:09:46
reader power button it really is oh my God yeah it stays with a headphone jack yeah uh s10e also have the corner hole
00:09:55
punch cut yeah yeah yeah remember the um Big Hero 6 wallpaper we use exactly yeah so that that's a good that is a good
00:10:02
parallel yeah um but overall love it it's getting it took me a little while to get used to a smaller phone because
00:10:07
I've always used bigger ones um my tiny gripes are the fingerprint sensor I missed under
00:10:13
the screen just because when I grab it with my left hand even though I've used my pointer finger as in a fingerprint unlock it's not great at figuring that
00:10:20
out um and then it has that like side swipe thing you can use but you can only
00:10:26
launch apps in it in floating windows which I just like let me open a full a
00:10:31
full screen app from that because I like to it's like a quick it's like a one-handed mode yeah it's like the quick
00:10:37
actions from the side and you can either do like settings uh toggles on it or also apps
00:10:43
so then you have to open it and then like click the big button because I hate using windowed apps on a phone yeah
00:10:48
there's just not my on an already small phone I don't know maybe the idea is that it's sort of like Arc where you're
00:10:54
like opening a window temporarily and then you're closing it quickly I think like the best version would be like
00:10:59
you're you have an app already and you're like I need to throw the calculator app up and do it really quick and then like click at it and that that
00:11:05
makes sense a cool idea I just don't yeah if it was full screen that seems like a really simple addition it could
00:11:10
do would be awesome to be able to do
00:11:18
give me the option to have a separate layout on the inside and outside just to just a toggle yeah just it doesn't have
00:11:24
to be on by default just let me chuckle it yeah yeah we like Android because it's customizable like we like toggles
00:11:31
yeah toggle me Right Moving on YouTube
00:11:39
is testing blocking a video entirely if you have an ad blocker installed
00:11:45
I wouldn't run a there's a thing about these headlines is whenever I see a headline that says YouTube is testing
00:11:51
yeah I kind of just wait because YouTube tests a lot of crazy things yeah a lot
00:11:57
of some things do make it YouTube was testing removing a dislike counter and it made it to the top and they disliked
00:12:03
it YouTube was testing you know some other weird things that eventually made it to the top but YouTube also tests
00:12:08
like insane things that they just want to see if it'll work with like a fraction of a percent of people and then it goes away so I don't know how far in
00:12:15
the testing process this one has made it seems like it's still not uh fully rolled out but
00:12:20
yeah you know social media companies like to protect the way they make money so I mean you have an ad blocker you're not making them any money that's the
00:12:27
thing how many things do they test that are directly affecting their bottom line like YouTube offers an insane amount of
00:12:32
stuff with free video uploads and essentially unlimited space for anybody so like they need to make money and I'm
00:12:39
not gonna sit here and like totally defend YouTube they have plenty of money but it's their whole business exactly I
00:12:45
I would be pretty surprised if this doesn't push forward yeah yeah I will also say uh I've had YouTube premium for
00:12:53
so long that I forgot there were ads on YouTube I was guilty of that for a while too yeah and I know that for one person
00:12:59
it's kind of expensive but you can have up to six people in your Google family plan and it's only like three dollars
00:13:06
and eighty cents a month per person if you have all sexual people everybody right it's funny how we think about
00:13:11
these prices it's only 3.80 for no ads on an unlimited video supply of the
00:13:18
entire internet you don't have to go to college for 3.80 that's it you one person has to pay and
00:13:25
everyone pays them back right yeah just checking yeah it's the the smart way of doing it if you work for YouTube you
00:13:30
didn't just hear that no no no we are We Are Family um
00:13:35
to describe how it it seems like they're testing it though essentially if you were to try and play a video with an ad
00:13:42
blocker on rather than immediately just block videos entirely it they give you like three chances with a screen that
00:13:48
says like they designed the whole thing yeah yeah because they they want to like push people towards like why they're doing this and it says it looks like you
00:13:54
may be using an ad blocker playback will be blocked unless YouTube's allowed on the is disabled on the ad blocker list
00:14:00
um or you can use YouTube premium so trying to push it towards that also with a like creators still get paid from your
00:14:06
subscription so more along the lines of like help your creator friends um yeah yeah this is exactly yeah but
00:14:14
also us yeah I will say like it felt like the earlier internet we everyone was like uh ad suck like get away from
00:14:20
it's like get them you know use ad blocker as well I think people are a little more open to like seeing ads
00:14:27
because we kind of zoned them out a little bit more now like even banner ads on websites like I don't even really
00:14:32
notice anymore and then like YouTube video the thing with YouTube video ads though is I was so used to not seeing
00:14:38
them for so long and then sometimes I go into incognito mode to watch YouTube videos yeah at the beginning double ads at the
00:14:45
beginning they're both 30 seconds I'm like yeah there's like a three minute video and I'm watching one minute of ads yeah I also agree with you in like being
00:14:52
more okay with ads just because more and more of how the internet is working is
00:14:57
without patriotic Those ads is like you're not getting the people creating those so like if I was going to meta I would like block the ads but if it's
00:15:04
going to creators I'm like yeah let's go to creators or like if you think of your favorite tech blog like nine to five Mac
00:15:10
or Verge or something like that it's like I'm going to put those on my like I use an ad block but I also use the
00:15:16
whitelist features very like cognizantly of like making sure that the people I want want to keep reading are
00:15:22
whitelisted from that so they make money and I can keep reading because so many places are shutting down now because
00:15:28
they're losing money and I'm sure a lot of those places are scared of these AI things taking all their information yeah
00:15:33
and this is this is even Beyond just online video like we just saw a whole bunch of ESPN layoffs how many ads do you see on ESPN like when you watch TV
00:15:41
aren't there like four consecutive minutes of ads or something like that for every 10 minutes of TV something crazy yeah and they're still like uh
00:15:48
yeah we're out of money for you sorry I know that like SpongeBob episodes they have two episodes or they have one
00:15:55
episode and fit within a 15 minute block but then like four or five minutes of that is ADS so a SpongeBob episode is
00:16:01
actually like 11 minutes long wow I think that's like the most television yeah like a lot of episodes yeah like
00:16:07
when you watch a 30 minute TV episode you only watched a 21 minute thing yeah and most of like a lot of ads yeah it
00:16:13
feels so old that we're explaining how commercials and SpongeBob was as kids like and that kids there are people
00:16:19
listening to this I don't understand yeah yeah so that's for those of you who don't know there's a thing called linear television where you don't get to choose
00:16:26
where you are in the video ever it's just playing Non-Stop and you don't get to hit pause well I guess maybe you
00:16:32
could which is what like Pluto TV is now but then unskippable ads would just play
00:16:37
back to back to back to back to back to back yeah
00:16:43
commercial break that's what it's called yeah it's like when we go to break but we don't really have commercials well
00:16:49
sometimes we do I guess well speaking of breaks let's take a quick ad break wow and then we'll come back and we'll talk
00:16:56
more about social media but of course we have this little fun thing that we do for ad breaks which is trivia
00:17:01
trivia it's way better than SpongeBob can you remind us of the score the score
00:17:09
he wants to press that there you go Marquez 19. David with 23 Andrew with 20 20 Club
00:17:17
[Laughter] rude this is gonna be rough one I lose
00:17:24
both of the things I wouldn't have done that that high five
00:17:30
if I had known that he was just trying to put you in there all right first question so what was the
00:17:38
first commercially available smartphone with wireless charging seeing as the Zenfone 10 now has wireless charging
00:17:44
what was the first one I'm gonna enjoy not being last for this one episode
00:17:50
I have a general idea it's wrong okay ad break
00:18:03

00:19:06
apply all right welcome back so I have a question and and David I promise this will make sense in a minute but it might
00:19:11
be confusing right now Marquez casual free agency happened it did or last week
00:19:17
it popped off any were there any like cool fun things big trades Blockbuster trades like enters a little hard to
00:19:24
follow at all Andrew's literally being like David I know you don't know sport okay okay but it will make sense it will
00:19:30
roll into something we all understand do you know wink Gretzky was the other day I'm not gonna ask if you paid attention
00:19:35
to freaking continues I'm not saying you're wrong I'm just saying I'm a little hurt Chris Paul got
00:19:41
waved and he was uh he was technically a Washington Wizard for a few days and then now he's uh he's on the Warriors
00:19:47
which is fascinating because he he was like their biggest not biggest you're a big Chris Paul there yeah yeah he was
00:19:53
their rival and I was gonna play for them now well I'll keep watching them play it's tough being a West Coast sorry I'm
00:20:00
tangenting already West Coast basketball fan because all the games start at 10 10 30. you end up going to bed at like 2
00:20:06
A.M yeah I want to watch some East Coast teams this year but yeah there were some moves have you heard of the Knicks the
00:20:11
New York Knicks yeah to them we did make a good signing though did you yeah um yeah he's gonna run your whole team no
00:20:19
no no no no but we got the like core crew now from the villain yeah from the Villanova team that won so like I like
00:20:26
it it's fun they're gonna keep winning naturally so question when you're following free agency how do you follow
00:20:33
it Alex I was gonna say shout out to locked on Knicks yeah yeah Alex is honestly it's
00:20:40
usually Twitter Twitter or I'll open Instagram and it'll refresh and there'll be a roach post at the top oh yeah what
00:20:46
was just like it was funny he sorry so there's this guy it's not a real thing Adrian will just I don't know yeah I'm
00:20:52
gonna butcher his name what is it he's a crazy reporter that he knows things before the players so he tweeted out
00:20:58
like like a week ago about one player that was like not getting their contract extended or something like that and that
00:21:04
player was like thanks for the heads up I had no idea oh man yeah so he knows
00:21:09
things anyway well so the reason you might be wondering why we're talking about this yes to me the two best ways
00:21:15
to follow free agency I'm an NHL fan not an NBA fan but they they're like exactly similar yeah this all happens on July
00:21:23
1st and I follow all of it through Reddit and Twitter which July 1st Reddit
00:21:28
and Twitter were very hard to follow on oh because Reddit lost all third party
00:21:34
apps on July 1st they all closed down and Twitter had a fun little rate limit
00:21:40
feature whatever you want to call it the day of July 1st for both of them so nice
00:21:46
I'd like to talk about both of these and how annoying they were how do we start yeah which would you like to talk about
00:21:51
first Twitter or Reddit first I would like to say I do not know Sports
00:21:56
but but I think that we should talk about read it first for no reason I agree with
00:22:05
that reason cool we've got it we talked brief well we talked in length about yes
00:22:10
yeah in a previous episode yeah um the update is that now they've gone
00:22:16
through with actually nuke we got to the the limit so when they had to pay the
00:22:21
bill right yes they didn't nuke so they turned on the API cost thing not all
00:22:28
third party apps shut down no I believe bacon reader is still around and said they are switching to a paid only option
00:22:34
very soon or that was that relay for Reddit I'm still using relay and we've had no updates okay relay is still like
00:22:43
on the fence but I think the most recently thing I saw about them is that they were like it's probably going to
00:22:48
cost about seven dollars a month which Wow might mean just shut down because that's expensive to ask for yeah I think
00:22:55
we would probably pay that much yeah I would probably not want to pay more than five but I would Seven's a lot of money
00:23:01
a lot of money per month but if you think about what has to go through Play Store and App Store and by the time they
00:23:07
make it back to like pay for these stupid API changes like yeah they're not totally sure yet um but Apollo sync and
00:23:14
reddit is fun all shut down they were gone end of June 30th over with
00:23:20
um and I just have to say because of free agency I had to use the default app
00:23:26
for a little bit and I previously had mentioned that it's very bad and now after using it for a weekend I think I
00:23:33
need to make a small correction on that it's really bad it is so much worse than I thought it was it is horrible I know
00:23:40
it is the worst experience I think I've ever dealt with it's pretty bad an app I just like have you used the default app
00:23:47
I have managed to avoid it so far yeah oh my goodness look at scrolling through this I'm in dark mode okay oh I'm also
00:23:54
an airplane mode so that might take a second it's not loading anything I also want to make it I want to make a quick
00:23:59
correction that uh BaconReader did fully shut down relay for Reddit is still around for now but they will be moving
00:24:06
to a subscription model in the coming weeks um so they're keeping it the developer is trying to get their the API
00:24:13
calls that they're using it's down as low as possible so they can charge as little as possible yeah but we'll find
00:24:19
out soon how much that actually got a couple updates in the Play store and every time I see an update for really like Reddit I'm like oh no what is it I
00:24:26
load up the uh the notes and it just says API optimizations and I'm like oh okay wow yeah keep going so it still
00:24:33
works yeah so so this is I just loaded up the hockey subreddit it has a pin
00:24:38
post at the top look in dark mode you like can't even tell where a new post starts oh yeah you see how bad this
00:24:44
looks then a potential full page ad that's an ad uh this is an ad
00:24:51
full page video ad um and then just like these terrible
00:24:56
it's just everything looks and that's the full page video ad yeah I mean I'm not logged in which I think would still
00:25:01
be look how many ads there are it's this is horrible it's just been my normal Reddit experience well it sounds like
00:25:08
that's probably why you don't like Reddit if you're on Android use relay for edit it's in my opinion one of the
00:25:13
best Reddit apps that's ever been made and uh it's free it's still free for now so for now weirdly enough oh is
00:25:22
yeah because I paid for it yeah it's still free for now but they're going to be moving to a subscription model they haven't announced the price yet but
00:25:28
interesting they must be doing pretty well if they can take that time because they're getting charged they're starting
00:25:34
to yeah I paid for Relay Pro but it was a one-time fee so yeah same yeah a couple bucks it's three dollars there's
00:25:41
still three dollars seven years ago yeah switch over the the scary part about all
00:25:47
of this though is that like the more people that go over to these apps that didn't have as big of a user base before
00:25:52
the more it's gonna cost them yep and then the more likely it might just don't use real also it's awful let's see is it
00:26:01
um weirdly enough Claire has read it as fun on her phone and it still works and I don't know how I read something that
00:26:08
like there was some weird setting that reddit is fun still works for for some reason and but it's going to get patched
00:26:14
soon and it's gonna it's gonna get destroyed soon so I'm sure will she was I she told me she's like I've been using
00:26:19
Reddit and I was like no you haven't and she's like no no I'm fine he's like you just haven't refreshed it yet like you probably it's just old stuff then she
00:26:26
refreshes him right in front of me I was like can I borrow this for a minute I gotta get my fix in
00:26:32
um so right now pretty much what I'm doing is I have the default app if I want to like really look at something
00:26:37
but because I'm not logged in in the default app for me to go try and read comments on Reddit is like a chore so I
00:26:45
don't find myself like freely scrolling through it anymore okay so it logs you out but it still works so it does clear
00:26:51
so yeah apparently she doesn't log into anything apparently it's reddit is fun currently is like basically just
00:26:57
accessing the Old Dot Reddit like public website and you and using that data
00:27:03
somehow um yeah it says most likely using the dot Json API which is still available
00:27:08
anonymously so you can't you can't be logged in and use it which is annoying
00:27:13
so it's basically just like a different interface to read the website I guess the front page without being logged in
00:27:19
if you're pointing like if you're trying to go to a certain subreddit I guess that still would work okay because then
00:27:24
you can just you have to search it every time to be fair this is as of four days ago so maybe Reddit patched it and yeah
00:27:30
now they're shut down so it'll probably be on there but I mean like ultimately
00:27:36
see your NFL free agency on Reddit would have been pretty tough this is like impossible but then there's Twitter but
00:27:42
then there's Twitter there's Twitter which is great all right so the Twitter thing that happened
00:27:48
um was on July 1st a lot of people might have seen this little notification pop up that says rate limit exceeded and uh
00:27:54
did any of you guys get it I did yeah but I did it the the first thing when I woke up in the morning I opened Twitter
00:28:01
and I saw it I think it's within like 24 hours or whatever so I probably hit it the day before and then it went into
00:28:06
effect um great notification prompt for people that have no idea what that means great
00:28:11
job Elon uh but basically they they set this limit so that you can only read a
00:28:17
certain number of posts and they also for some reason uh made it so it was a different amount for Twitter blue users
00:28:23
it was 10 times the the amount for Twitter blue users it started as 600 for non-blue users and 6 000 for blue users
00:28:31
um they are increasing it more and more over time Elon said it was temporary we'll see if it's temporary yeah they
00:28:38
also didn't tell anyone until 1pm Eastern like the whole morning and the
00:28:43
morning and like like I said this is NBA and NHL free agency there were like some of the biggest reporters that I follow
00:28:50
trying to see stuff they're just like well I guess you can look at all this on my MySpace page because like this is not
00:28:56
working and those people need to get our the internet to like look for breaking news and Twitter's supposed to
00:29:03
be the site of breaking news and now you're limiting I think that the reason that they turned this on was that they
00:29:09
are trying to figure out what AI companies are scraping Twitter without using the paid API because you can do
00:29:16
that without using the paid API using scraping services and technically it'll just like run through tweets really
00:29:21
rapidly so you'll hit a wall really quickly whether or not they actually like make it a temporary thing or if
00:29:28
they just have it for a very long period of time because they need to keep catching these companies I have no idea
00:29:34
yeah that that's a similar excuse to what Steve Huffman said it is is like I
00:29:39
think that's really scraping I think it's a legit excuse agreed yeah but it sucks that like this new era of
00:29:44
technology is coming in and it's basically completely destroying all the other stuff yeah it's destroying a lot
00:29:51
of other users I'm sure woj hit his uh hit his rate limit for the thing about wojis he's he's on the phone he's
00:29:58
getting his in info and then he's just tweeting it and so everyone who's trying to follow and refresh and find the
00:30:04
latest stuff will hit their limits probably if they're not logged in or whatever um but yeah that's it is it's kind of
00:30:11
like we constantly see Google and YouTube like fighting their Demons of
00:30:16
like people trying to take advantage of this site in Twitter's cases people scraping or AI Services scraping in
00:30:23
YouTube's case a lot of times it's spammers and scammers and things like that people making fake accounts so I
00:30:29
could imagine like The Brute Force version of this on YouTube would be like you've left too many YouTube comments
00:30:34
rate limit exceeded and you're like what yeah what do you mean rate limit exceeded I like going around and leaving comments on things yeah it's like well
00:30:40
spammers just go around and leave thousands of comments on things so if we just set a hard cap before we think
00:30:46
about it at all that's at least a way to stop scammers from being so effective yeah and this is Twitter's version of
00:30:52
that it's like wow people are going around scraping all of Twitter pulling thousands of things off the site
00:30:57
and whatever they're doing with it we're not getting paid yeah so we'll just set a hard limit and and that's temporary
00:31:03
we'll figure out a better way to do something else about it later in the future but for now some regular users
00:31:08
are going to hit that limit too and oh well also all the tech VCS have all been like if you're hitting the rate limit
00:31:14
then you need to go outside and touch grass that was and the funny thing about that is like bro you own this app like
00:31:20
the point you are clearly just using that as an excuse because you're you're you're trying to make us use the app as
00:31:26
much as possible so you can't just like turn around people want us to use that
00:31:31
yeah so you should go outside like all right I feel like like elon's was like
00:31:38
we're not going to tell anyone and they're gonna just think Twitter broke yeah then at one o'clock I'm gonna tell
00:31:43
people it's a very small number and then everyone's going to complain and then an hour later I'm gonna be like whoa hold
00:31:49
up we'll increase it and then another hour later he's like okay we'll increase it more and then right after that is like touch grass losers it's like it's
00:31:57
like what is going on how is this the pr cycle of Twitter that's the Elon cycle that's pretty much consistent with
00:32:04
everything that's ever happened negatively to him so yeah it's just I don't know I can't believe you don't
00:32:10
announce it at first because everyone was very confused they just thought Twitter was going down like they thought it was one of those days where Twitter
00:32:15
was just not gonna quite it's a funny thing because some of these it's funny that this coincidence it's like the how
00:32:22
do I say this YouTube also never tells anyone about the changes that it makes to stop
00:32:29
spammers and scammers all the algorithmic changes it's a black box all the rule changes about things like that
00:32:35
that you can't do with an account that you just made when we made a brand new account for this podcast we tried to upload it took like 24 hours to process
00:32:41
I'm sure that's another rule we don't know about um but the reason they never announced those rules is so that those spammers
00:32:49
and scammers cannot read the rule book and go how do I get around this because that's a guidebook for how you get
00:32:54
around all those rules yeah but it's a weird coincidence that with Twitter this
00:33:00
limit also coincided with regular users use where like a regular user could just be
00:33:05
reading tweets and then hit the limit yeah or like most of the things with YouTube it's like you can't leave 300
00:33:11
comments in an hour yeah okay well if you did you'd think YouTube Broke because I couldn't leave any more
00:33:16
comments yeah most regular people are never gonna do that Reddit has had that built in since like the beginning like you can't leave like more than like
00:33:23
three comments within like 10 minutes or something yeah or it goes oh that's kind of spammable make more than that many
00:33:30
posts within 10 minutes yeah right yeah so yeah I'm sure you can't you know change your profile picture 10 times in
00:33:37
10 minutes I'm sure there's a lot of things we don't know that you can't do on YouTube and Twitter it's just this one happens to be something that regular
00:33:43
people are like wait what I hit the limit what I'm just acting normal what's going on yeah when you do views on a thing that's just you're scrolling
00:33:50
through hundreds and hundreds of like posts and comments like going through one Post in their comments like you're
00:33:55
hitting a hundred and somebody gets traded I scroll through all the reaction tweets so fast there's like 100 themes
00:34:02
about the guy that gets just got traded it's yeah it's pretty easy I haven't hit the limit yet but I imagine it's not that I hit it although you're verified
00:34:08
I'm unverified so 600 like back when it first happened 600 posts you kidding I'm
00:34:14
not even out of bed I'm I'm through a thousand posts before I even step my feet on the floor
00:34:22
there's grass yeah so yeah that was just it was a hectic day and it happened on a
00:34:27
day where like Twitter and Reddit were very important and I was very sad and you know I really feel like both of
00:34:33
these has just turned into me using them far less on my phone which probably is a good thing yes yeah it's probably
00:34:38
ultimate you're probably touching it's terrible for them to make money but it's yeah the ultimate goal of all these
00:34:44
social media companies is to make as much money as possible basically I'm so simplifying but like they want to make
00:34:50
as much money as possible yeah and if the mechanic of them making money is you
00:34:56
spend more time on the site so you see more ads yeah than anything they do that's counter to that it seems
00:35:02
hilariously dumb yeah so it does seem pretty stupid you're getting people to leave the site faster thus making less
00:35:08
money yeah they'll figure it out also on July 1st there were like massive surges of signups to Mastodon and to Blue Sky
00:35:15
oh this happens every time there's a weird feature literally anytime there's any sort of weird thing on Twitter you
00:35:20
get like some surge I'm sure on all these sites yeah Mastodon T2 everything yeah
00:35:27
probably not we'll probably talk about those after the break we got to get to Twitter competitors right that's another
00:35:34
section and a fresh one so we got some new things to talk about there yeah but before we get there let's take one more
00:35:40
quick break and let's do a trivia question all right trivia question number two
00:35:47
really hoping I know this one maybe maybe not in the 2022 blind smartphone
00:35:53
camera test I should know this one the pixel 6A won first place
00:35:58
what phone came in third well so
00:36:04
there's two you didn't see there there's two the two phones that are tied for third there's two thirds or is there
00:36:10
okay because there's no time or yellow rating what in 20 oh because it was 20
00:36:15
22. just kidding no we did do ELO there is a third so is it in which category
00:36:21
overall overall overall third highest ELO yes okay I should know that oh so
00:36:26
all three of them put together what there's a standard photo a low
00:36:32
light photo and a portrait photo standard no he had overall we did it okay
00:36:39
one and I remember second place dang they're okay well second place on Pixel
00:36:45
6 Pro was it or was it not said Pro I lived in the sheet for like two weeks
00:36:51
I know the bottom I should have a second yeah I'm pretty sure it was Pixel seven
00:36:57
third Seven Pro we didn't have a seven all right time for break time for break
00:37:05
thank you
00:37:11
all right welcome back so Marquez you said this new app you're trying is a foreshore Twitter killer you said
00:37:16
Twitter's probably going to be done by the end of the week I think that's what you said off camera that's what some
00:37:22
Advocates would interpret my statement as oh I'll read what I wrote and then I'll
00:37:28
expand on it how about that I like that okay so what I tweeted and just for background Twitter
00:37:34
mostly text based I think we can agree is it yeah at least start off that way so the number one thing Twitter has over
00:37:40
Bluesky and Macedon and T2 and all these other competitors is has always been the people uh that's what makes meta
00:37:48
launching their Twitter competitor threads so interesting yeah they'll Port everyone's Instagram handles over and
00:37:53
we'll just have people right away and I tweeted that I hit send got a lot
00:37:58
of interesting replies um I am currently using threads I have the app on my phone I'm in the sort of
00:38:04
like Early Access group it's going to go live right before this podcast goes up so we will also be using threads by the
00:38:10
time you yeah y'all will hear this follow us on threads you know it's another one but I think that's the the interesting thing and I guess I'll
00:38:16
expand it to two things actually the the thing that Twitter has had over
00:38:23
T2 Mastodon blue sky is infrastructure
00:38:28
and people yeah infrastructure I just say because like they're a real company and when I look at T2 like they're
00:38:35
slowly like building features and Bug fixing and they don't have an app yet and they're exactly startup we're gonna
00:38:41
figure out how to do DMS in the next month like they're really early I don't think you can even block someone on T2
00:38:46
yet like Mastodon is down all the time blue sky the app crashes all the time like things are slowly coming together
00:38:52
but Twitter to be say what you want about Twitter but they Implement stuff for real and fast even if you hate what
00:38:59
they're doing sometimes you know so that's one thing um and meta has that meta has that in
00:39:07
Spades they're a real company that can make a real app with real features and as soon as I use threads I'm like yeah they made they built Twitter they've got
00:39:13
Reese shares they've got DMS they've got post they've got sharing images and videos they've got profiles they've
00:39:20
built the connection with Instagram they've just built it and they they have the infrastructure to keep building things so that's number one
00:39:26
and then number two I think we obviously Twitter doesn't have a ton of people compared to Facebook whatever I think
00:39:34
it's maybe 300 million versus however many billion but it does have a lot of like real people that people care about
00:39:42
following they've got athletes they've got artists they've got creators like us they've got politicians they've got all
00:39:48
these sports teams TV shows they're all on Twitter um and Mastodon T2 Blue Sky there's a
00:39:57
couple here and there like you might log in and be like oh cool like Oprah's on Mastodon like I don't know randomly
00:40:03
you'll see like a couple things pop up but to me it was always like well Twitter has everybody already so even if
00:40:11
the features are a little bit weird at least that's where the people are and that's what I'm here for and meta also has that because Instagram
00:40:20
Facebook the social graph is built in and I guess what's basically happening is when you sign up for Threads you keep
00:40:27
your Instagram handle I guess that's how it works you don't automatically get uh
00:40:33
you don't automatically follow everyone or get followed by people who follow your Instagram but at least you have your handle and you're verified already
00:40:39
and then you jump in and the people are already there like when I was using it pre-release as I've been using it
00:40:45
obviously uh you know Instagram employees Zuck and artemisery and people
00:40:51
like that but also just like a bunch of celebrities are already on it using it kind of just like poking around and I
00:40:57
have a feeling that's just going to grow kind of the same way it was because everyone already uses Instagram and expects that yeah so those two things
00:41:05
infrastructure and people they are what made Twitter better than his competitors and this is the first
00:41:11
competitor that's come along that has potentially both of those things right out the gate and that's why it's interesting to see what happens I have
00:41:16
some questions yeah okay um wait I want to tell a story first okay okay so okay yeah this morning
00:41:23
David post into slack saying like oh threads is like available and you can go to it and see it like it's not out you
00:41:30
can't just download it but like the website is up and then Marquez goes in real life like in real time yeah I've
00:41:36
been using this for like two or three days now like in previously like the real life meme happened to us yeah like
00:41:42
every time I'm always like oh it's some exciting new information and Marcus is just like oh I've been using that for a
00:41:48
while it's popping it's popping off over there I have a ton of I had to mute my threads notifications for the day
00:41:54
because dang I guess because I got a notification for every everything yeah okay so questions yeah uh number one is
00:42:03
the does the app feel like really well built out like does it have basically all the same features as Twitter good
00:42:10
question so eighty percent yeah eighty percent of all the stuff you'd expect and I think
00:42:16
they're probably gonna add stuff that Twitter doesn't already have so there is no like for you page but there's like sort of the home page thank God can we
00:42:22
see that yeah sort of let me let me screen record let me yeah boom yeah screen record so just to walk through
00:42:29
the UI there's the home page just like Twitter you can uh like something you can comment on something well this looks
00:42:36
exactly like reply to something you can attach an image oh you can't do image sharing it does crash in iOS 17 beta
00:42:43
when I try to image share no so I'll say that um yeah just on the iPhone
00:42:49
um but there is uh media you can share photos and videos there's a search
00:42:54
function so you can find new users and it does suggest a bunch so look oh Gordon Ramsey's at the top I can click
00:43:00
in he's got an avatar he's got one thread I can follow him cool there's compose which is just a compose window
00:43:06
there are likes and all your activity so replies mentions verified and your
00:43:12
profile file wait verif oh no so there is already a sorting mechanism for just people who are verified they're building
00:43:18
in this whole meta verified thing into this aren't they oh yeah Instagram they're definitely gonna do
00:43:24
that so that's it's all here that's all it's not working other question yeah how
00:43:29
high quality is the photo and video upload because Instagram is crap and
00:43:35
Twitter before I got bought by Elon uh made a very strong push to make photo quality really good and I really love
00:43:42
that about Twitter but Twitter never had any sort of like they have a media page but they don't have like a curated like
00:43:48
Gallery page yeah and something that I was hoping because this is like an Instagram sub product in a way I was
00:43:54
hoping maybe there would be some sort of like Gallery linkage to your Instagram or something I haven't seen that okay
00:44:00
um and I actually haven't really pixel peeped too much on the image quality either I'll look into that because Instagram has a really low image quality
00:44:07
yeah yeah everything is pixel everything you you fine-tune detail and color and everything then you post it and you're like what happened to my my precious
00:44:14
exactly that's that may still be true about this um but yeah they really didn't do any
00:44:19
sort of features that Twitter hasn't done okay so there aren't um like a
00:44:25
YouTube Studio or like a Twitter analytics Studio or anything crazy like that there isn't like a new gallery view
00:44:31
for images they haven't really gone that crazy or done anything like super Innovative but they have built the Bare Bones like pieces of a text-based social
00:44:39
media app do you know how many photos you can upload at once and what the video max time is I have only tried to
00:44:46
upload one and I have only seen people upload one and I don't know what the max time is but it's only one if you can't upload
00:44:53
like four at least that's uh yeah four I've only seen one can you try to do multiple right now and see what happens
00:44:59
so it crashes anytime I try right it might not work but let's go one two
00:45:04
three four five six seven add seven values it just crashes uh
00:45:10
yeah again the basics okay it's got the basics I would love to do like 10 photos that would be amazing because the the
00:45:17
four the four Max on Twitter has also been kind of annoying to me you could thread it
00:45:23
so Instagram you can do a carousel of what eight ten ten ten yeah and on Lemon
00:45:28
eight you can do Carousel of I believe eight or ten is that not real so I think
00:45:34
they'll probably do that at some point but right now I think really it's just about like the social graph and the interestingness of it being a new place
00:45:41
where all the people you already know are hanging out that's kind of the main thing that's interesting looking at it right there it
00:45:47
looks like Twitter and that's a great thing yes to be honest because exactly like you said
00:45:52
there are people already on it it looks and seems like it's acting just like Twitter like scrolling through it I'm
00:45:58
just seeing random thoughts with GIF replies and a place to look at my activities and a place to follow people
00:46:04
and a way to look at my own profile like the the the notification page looks nice
00:46:09
you can split it up between verified users and all replies and just replies or likes and stuff like that like and
00:46:15
it's also interesting I separated replies from mentions so if it's a new post that mentions you yes that's really
00:46:21
that's really good reply to something you posted that's a different section yeah yeah okay cool
00:46:26
um was I also going to say well I really lost my chance out there can you thread things yet
00:46:31
yeah so yeah so what's it called it's called threads yeah and basically every
00:46:36
single post has a section where you can jump in and view specifically the replies so I guess that's their mechanic
00:46:42
for it being threads I haven't been able to thread multiple threads together I
00:46:48
guess it's called threads can you can you like make a thread that has like when you finish you hit like add
00:46:54
additional thread or addition what's the character limit yeah is there a character limit these are all good
00:46:59
questions because like try I'm assuming if there isn't a way to do that which is already weird because it's called a thread and it feels like you can't
00:47:06
thread it like you can on Twitter is there a character so you can thread it just by like adding it to this basically
00:47:12
every post has a thread of all the replies underneath it and you can just add to that thread and it just shows up
00:47:18
in line so I guess technically that's a thread okay character limit uh test test test test
00:47:24
uh it doesn't show up visually it does it doesn't show a character count as you're typing okay yeah one thing I was
00:47:30
going to say well you you're trying to hit that character limit is when Blue Sky first launched on mobile one of the
00:47:36
most positive things that we were saying about it was wow this looks exactly like Twitter and if meta can like make
00:47:42
something that looks exactly like Twitter cool um I will say that like Elon made this
00:47:47
one point that it's like worst person you know just Medicaid
00:47:55
what is it it doesn't show how many characters I typed does it feel like more than Twitter
00:48:01
that feels like about the same I'd say about the same yeah it's probably too don't know for sure 240. that's a reasonable amount yeah yeah
00:48:07
um so you know Elon made this point where he was like can't wait for the future when the every single social
00:48:14
media app on the Internet is owned by one company and it's like yeah I mean
00:48:19
that's part of the reason I loved Twitter was it wasn't part of some Mega Corporation um but he also wants to turn Twitter
00:48:26
into that so yeah he's burning it down he wants it to be a mega Corporation and also it's like now it's bundled in with
00:48:32
like Tesla and SpaceX I guess that is a potential concern is that for all like leaving Twitter because we want to get
00:48:38
away from one like oh we don't like what elon's doing now you're running into the arms of Zuck
00:48:43
is that what's happening the billionaires own our souls basically which threads isn't going to be
00:48:48
launching in the EU because of that wait really yeah at all because they don't meet the data privacy requirements in
00:48:55
the EU they're still working it out yeah it's not going to be coming out at launch yeah they're working on it
00:49:02
together I don't follow anyone in the EU anymore
00:49:09
also quick question I'm wondering how do you think this is going to tie into Instagram so that is mine yeah that's a
00:49:15
big question for sure so like stories reels those are baked into the Instagram app and those are the things that I
00:49:22
think of as successful Instagram taking things yeah so like igtv yeah
00:49:29
that one died yes I was told that you will be able to share threads to stories
00:49:35
and it'll link directly to the threads app which is interesting uh and so that's how I think at launch a lot of
00:49:41
people will be sharing their threads accounts is by sharing a thread into your Instagram and getting that audience
00:49:47
over there that actually does make a lot of sense because how many people screenshot tweets and post it as a story
00:49:53
yeah so if you could just directly share an actual link to a tweet you have a better way of giving credit to the
00:50:00
people and actually giving them because if it jumps straight to that exactly yeah links in you get to it's probably
00:50:05
because it's your own post is probably some sort of verified something happening there just to make sure you can like actually link it you know
00:50:11
because of that I could see this being Twitter in general out of all the social medias if you were to make a sponsored
00:50:18
post as a creator is the worst like the worst deals you'll get like because
00:50:24
engagement on Twitter is lower it has less people and in general like it's swiped through pretty quickly
00:50:30
Instagram's higher and being able to to link directed Instagram I could see
00:50:36
marketing companies wanting to use threads more with creators than Twitter if it actually gets to that point of
00:50:42
being yeah as big as Twitter also if a lot of people feel like they're saying double because they've heard this thread's name before there was an app
00:50:49
called threads from meta uh that was a it was a dedicated it only closed down
00:50:54
last year in 2020 or sorry in 2021 but it was a dedicated Instagram DM app that
00:51:00
it was like it use your Instagram account just for DMS and I don't know why they had it I think they were like
00:51:06
kind of testing whether or not people because a lot of people a lot of younger people use like Snapchat as the main way
00:51:12
they communicate right right and I actually talked to a lot of people only really through Instagram DMS because
00:51:17
it's a pretty fully fledged like messaging app you know um so they they tested an app called
00:51:24
threads uh which was just messaging they shut it down two years ago and now they're just kind of like resurfacing
00:51:30
The Branding the funny thing is like the the word threads makes a lot of sense
00:51:36
it's already called a Twitter thread right yeah and so if you can just like threads for conversations like it's
00:51:41
pretty good it's a pretty good name pretty good name how do you feel about the logo it's like the at sign with an additional
00:51:47
little Loop right yeah it's pretty simple just black white on black yeah I don't I don't hate it it looks too much
00:51:54
like a generic at to me but and also it like the color of it is a lot like
00:51:59
Instagram right I think it's just black the splash screen has Instagram colors but everything else seems to be black
00:52:05
and white oh interesting yeah yeah oh you know it's fine and I just found
00:52:10
something and I'm not sure it's gonna do this but there's a corner up at the up at the top there's an Instagram logo when I hit that it goes to my Instagram
00:52:16
profile I wonder if there's maybe a threads and it goes back to my threads that
00:52:22
would be great that seems like what they would do that's like a very seamless uh transition as well yeah that looks
00:52:28
really nice I really like that it's funny because I've definitely built I've built a lot of my following on Twitter
00:52:34
and now I'm like I wish they were on Instagram and I have like a certain I feel like that I have a much smaller
00:52:40
percentage on Instagram but I would like more people to be on my Instagram because I actually post my photos there so if I can have the cross compatibility
00:52:47
no I totally agree and to add on to that like I've enjoyed using Instagram more
00:52:52
but you take a bunch of great pictures I don't I just make sure like one-line jokes on Twitter every once in a while I
00:53:00
would like to go over there so they can go together yeah I'll just take I'll write it on a Post-It note and take a picture of it oh yeah post it on my
00:53:06
store yeah honestly that would be a great profile doesn't Alton Brown do that oh really so he does something like
00:53:12
that everyone has some some version of how they post things yeah yeah yeah yeah cool well by the time you guys uh listen
00:53:19
to or see this podcast it will be out so follow all of us follow us so all of this was useless because they already
00:53:25
have it yeah they're all like okay threat at us on how you like it I was gonna ask that thread me bro a tweet a
00:53:33
Twitter post is called a tweet is a thread post just called a thread it shouldn't be because a threat is still a
00:53:39
function within the app so I feel like they should call it it's probably just going to be called a post yeah and if you make a post and nobody replies there
00:53:45
are no threads so it can't be a thread exactly you could thread a thread and have a like thread squared you have to
00:53:51
reply to yourself to make it a thread yeah as long as you don't use the thread
00:53:56
Emoji how long till we have third party thread apps never never I feel like the era of third-party apps is just over
00:54:02
isn't thread also like this Home Tech um thread is part of matter it's part of
00:54:09
matter yeah it's part of matter to keep those straight in my head yeah well yeah thread is out if you want to
00:54:15
follow us on thread yeah we're gonna be we're the we will be the same handles that we are on Instagram yeah so follow
00:54:21
us on Instagram and then follow us on Thursday I was also going to ask Pop Quiz to you guys I don't know if how much you keep track of this but if you
00:54:27
had to sort by number of followers on social networks how do you think we
00:54:34
MKBHD channels rank YouTube Instagram Twitter
00:54:39
they're on Google Plus you're you're so yours oh I've got YouTube number one yes
00:54:46
um Instagram number two Twitter two no Twitter Twitter too T2 six mil then four
00:54:52
point something mil on Instagram yes 17 mil on YouTube Andrew's on it yeah uh
00:54:58
four point something on Instagram yeah uh wow there's more where did Google Plus top out
00:55:04
[Music] [Laughter] Google Plus topped out a little over
00:55:11
five million five million really wow wow yeah those are Bots we were I was one of
00:55:17
the suggested follows when you first yeah so it was oh so Google Plus is more
00:55:22
than Instagram at the time it was the highest thing that was not YouTube for me wow yeah that's wild what's your T2
00:55:29
I think about 500. nice that makes you talk that's more than are actually on the site yeah
00:55:36
wow well all right I think that's good to know uh I'm not on Mastodon so if you guys are thinking you're following me on
00:55:42
mass but it's not me here's another thing with uh so threads at launch will not support it but it will be supporting
00:55:48
it it will support activity Pub so you can post on Mastodon and see on threads post on threads see it unmasked on so we
00:55:55
will have third party third party thread apps yeah if you use Mastodon yeah technically yeah it's not available at
00:56:01
launch but they're going to make it available which is interesting I think that yeah that is interesting I think that it's a PR play because it doesn't
00:56:08
people still want to use like the official main app and Mastodon still way too confusing for most people so I think
00:56:14
Zuck is like oh it shows that we're not trying to own everything and that like you know you could technically use
00:56:20
whatever you want but like most people are still going to use the official app so it's really good with the app first
00:56:25
and then go use whatever you want it's a really good PR play to make them like look like they're supporting the open
00:56:30
web and also the first party app has to be the most important just like for for
00:56:35
like regular people and this is going to link from Instagram as I'm imagining like there's going to be a button from Instagram to threads and people will
00:56:41
just find it organically that would be great that's gonna be the thing that drives the most Discovery yeah or they
00:56:47
could have just turned Instagram into Twitter well they had that that weird feature the broadcast feature they think
00:56:53
about that and they still have it and I think that was the beginning of this have you gotten these yeah where they like send out a message in your DMs
00:56:59
that's weird sent you a photo and you're like what that's just a mass message to all their
00:57:06
followers I hate that I had that happen on my phone while I was showing my phone to someone and they were like what it
00:57:12
sucks yeah then I had to explain bro we're here for a day yeah we fight in cage
00:57:19
matches like twice a week yeah we've been sparring anyway okay that's it for this week uh
00:57:26
this week on waveform of course we uh we'll probably talk more about these social media things as they grow and expand and evolve so let us know in the
00:57:33
comments what you guys think what you want us to talk about and follow us on all those things and follow us on all those things we will now attempt to
00:57:39
answer the questions that Adam asked at the beginning it's trivia time attempt to try I am not gonna get these right I
00:57:48
really thought I knew what the second one was but I don't know anymore Adam Molina I have an idea I definitely don't
00:57:53
know the first one first question what was the first commercially available smartphone with wireless charging
00:58:00
God that is tough I have so between two of them that if it's the wrong one I'll be so mad but if
00:58:07
it's neither of them then I won't be that yeah I just want you know I'm changing what I
00:58:12
originally put Let's cross it out don't basically I know the first commercial film with two gigabytes of RAM
00:58:18
did you see they just announced the phone with 24 gigs of RAM yeah really I don't know what it was because it's a
00:58:24
great match something yeah I don't know the answers
00:58:30
oh wow oh that might be right okay I said the Nexus 4. oh it's not right
00:58:36
seven wrong I said the S2 wrong oh who's closer none of you actually well I guess
00:58:43
technically Andrew's kind of close because I think this the Galaxy 6 was the first Samsung Galaxy phone that's
00:58:49
what I did with the six Edge something like that really okay but but the first one with wireless charging was actually
00:58:54
it's the Asus Zenfone 2. no okay good the Nokia 920 according to Computer
00:59:00
World it came out in 2012. wait that's a Windows phone it's not a smartphone that's a smartphone that's still a
00:59:06
smartphone yeah Lumia 920. oh
00:59:20
the dumb
00:59:45
the back of this 920 it's just like well a red square and then just like this is
00:59:51
a little tiny camera with the thing that says Nokia it's taking up like five percent of the tiny camera horrible
00:59:57
looking all right next question about David Google's what the first Android phone was with wireless charging in 2022
01:00:04
the blind smartphone camera test the pixel 6A won first place what phone came
01:00:10
in third overall [Music] an ELO rating
01:00:25
this is our own smartphone camera test yeah I didn't look at the data as much
01:00:31
as Andrew did Andrew lived in this data for like three weeks yeah he just slept under his desk maybe it
01:00:38
all blurred together for him definitely that's kind of what I'm hoping for all right flip him and read I put Zenfone 9.
01:00:45
correct oh I'm so mad I didn't put it I assumed this was a trick question because we talked about the Zenfone we
01:00:51
don't need this moment I need this moment oh my God I also put Zenfone 9. let's go I also wrote the order of top
01:00:57
four I don't know if I'm all 20 clubs okay wait
01:01:14
and then I thought he was gonna be like oh they're gonna put the Zenfone and I was like well I know the Zenfone did you
01:01:20
guys want to bonuses yes no bonus Point what was in fourth place
01:01:30
wrong oh it was the Oppo Find X5 oh right oh I met I should have put find ax
01:01:36
as my guess for third that's I can't remember yeah yeah all right so new scores David 24 Andrew and Marquez tied
01:01:42
naked naked 20. which is a great set of scores together because next episode is
01:01:49
the trivia Extravaganza yes so you don't say yeah my question is
01:01:55
um does my does the fact that my head does not matter now because they didn't really extravagant no it doesn't does
01:02:00
right oh no it's like going oh it won't it won't matter it's like going from Jeopardy to double jeopardy you
01:02:05
technically have an advantage but it's not very sad wow a bummer yeah everyone
01:02:11
that's followed up until now please congratulate me because I'm gonna lose the regular season yeah you won regular
01:02:17
season yeah yeah now you got to bring it in the playoffs yeah exactly I wish I see about that first round I always
01:02:22
crash that either way that's been it for this week on waveform thanks for listening thanks for watching catch you
01:02:29
next week in our trivia Extravaganza where we'll set this once and for all who is really truly the most trivia
01:02:35
