This episode covers the story of John Leonard Orr, a serial arsonist and former fire investigator, who was responsible for numerous fires in Southern California, including a deadly blaze at Ole's Home Center.
The episode begins with the Ole's Home Center fire on October 10, 1984, where Jim Obdam, a cashier, describes the chaos as flames engulfed the store, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a young boy named Matthew Troidl.
Investigators initially ruled the fire accidental, but John Orr, an arson investigator, believed it was arson. As more suspicious fires occurred, including at other Ole's stores and Craft Mart, evidence began to mount against an unidentified arsonist.
Marvin Casey, an investigator, theorized that the arsonist could be one of the attendees from an arson convention. Despite his efforts to link the fires to the attendees, his theory was dismissed until further evidence emerged, including a fingerprint found on an incendiary device.
Eventually, Orr's fingerprint matched the evidence, leading to his arrest. Investigators found incriminating materials and a manuscript he wrote that mirrored his crimes. Orr was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, believed to have set over 2,000 fires during his career.
