November 16, 2023 / 51:59

This episode covers the unsolved Boardman murders of three boys in Ohio during the 1970s, updates on the cases of Bradley Bolino and David Evans, and the identification of their killer, Joseph Norman Hill. The hosts discuss the circumstances surrounding the boys' abductions and deaths, the investigative efforts over the years, and the recent DNA evidence that linked Hill to both murders.

The episode begins with a brief overview of the three victims: 15-year-old Thomas Be, 12-year-old Bradley Bolino, and 13-year-old David Evans. Each boy was abducted in similar circumstances while walking home. The hosts detail the tragic outcomes of their cases, highlighting the community's fear and the ongoing search for justice.

Recent developments reveal that Joseph Norman Hill has been identified as the murderer of both Bolino and Evans through DNA evidence. The hosts discuss the investigative process that led to this breakthrough, including the role of forensic science and the persistence of law enforcement in pursuing these cold cases.

The episode also touches on the emotional toll on the victims' families, particularly the efforts of David Evans's father, who fought tirelessly for justice. The hosts reflect on the importance of keeping these cases in the public eye and the impact of community support in solving such crimes.

Finally, the hosts express their gratitude to listeners and the community for their continued support, emphasizing the significance of these developments in providing closure for the families affected by these tragic events.

TLDR

00:03:27
let's talk some true crime [Music] oh [Music] Borman Ohio and 1970 the suburb of
00:04:31
Youngstown had a population of about 30,000 people and that population would grow to almost 40,000 by
00:04:38
1980 in the early '70s board men experienced what fortunately most cities and towns of its size rarely if ever
00:04:47
experience the homicides of three youths the victimology was similar three boys similar in age ranging from 12 to
00:04:57
15 all from similar neighbor neighborhoods and backgrounds and all three abducted or
00:05:04
attacked while walking home as the sun was going down or shortly after all three cases are still
00:05:14
unsolved two cases are considered to be very much cold cases the leads have seemingly dried up over the decades
00:05:22
anything left open-ended it appears those options have only been left that way because they were looked at explored
00:05:29
Bo and examined and there either is likely one if not two results either no evidence to back the
00:05:38
theory or we just can't put someone where they would need to be to have committed the murder or
00:05:47
murders however one of the cases is still very warm and as we hinted at last week one
00:05:56
of the cases may be getting warmer as we speak 15-year-old Thomas be was the first of
00:06:03
three victims he was attacked on his way home and later succumbed to his injuries
00:06:10
in December of 1970 he was found by a police officer having been badly beaten by an unknown
00:06:18
as salent Thomas was placed in intensive care where sadly he passes away Days Later never regaining
00:06:28
consciousness police were never able to question him about the attack that led to his
00:06:35
death Brad Bolino age 12 was abducted on the last day of March 1972 And he was killed after leaving his
00:06:44
friend's house his body was not found until April 4th when a refuge collector spotted his
00:06:52
feet sticking up in the trash in a collection bin behind some businesses in a busy section of of
00:07:00
Boardman the third Boardman boy victim is 13-year-old David Evans who goes missing on Friday January 17th
00:07:09
1975 all signs point toward abduction his hat was found trampled in the snow at an intersection in his
00:07:18
neighborhood just blocks from his home his lifeless body was found near an office
00:07:25
building his little body frozen stiff sadly the boy died from his diabetes he was abducted and held
00:07:36
somewhere and denied his much needed insulin shots regardless of how he died or the
00:07:43
coroner's ruling he was murdered he was abducted and then died from disease as his captor denied him treatment and then
00:07:53
his body was dumped of course the good people of Borman could not help but think that
00:07:59
that these three murders may be connected maybe even committed by the same person or
00:08:06
persons in fact even now 50 years later the case that is still showing promise of likely being solved the Brad Bolino
00:08:15
case detectives have openly suggested that a break or an arrest in that case may lead to much needed information in
00:08:25
one if not both of the other homicides in early February of 1975 just a little over a week after the
00:08:36
Evans boy body was found the Boardman chief of police received a letter mailed from the greater Youngstown
00:08:44
area it was double stamped with the word important on the front of the envelope the single page handwritten
00:08:53
letter reads to whom it may concern please don't don't let that man out of jail and
00:09:01
Struthers as he is the one responsible for three boys' deaths the one that was found along a
00:09:09
street that Bolino boy and Evans boy that 11-year-old girl would have been dead by now if he had gotten away
00:09:18
with it mister as you know one makes just one wrong move and gets caught these kind of men must be kept
00:09:28
out of circulation now I cannot tell you who I am as I want to keep on living someone would kill
00:09:38
me but if he is found guilty I will talk to someone and tell you how I know it may even come as a shock and I
00:09:48
know you won't want to believe me the letter is signed please help save the children this is true crime garage
00:10:00
[Music] last year in a four-part series we covered the Boardman murders still unsolved at that time over 50 years
00:10:23
later in the cases of Thomas be and Brad Bolino and coming up 50 years of the David Evans case as well yesterday we
00:10:33
covered the updates in the Brad Bolino case and thankfully here today we have updates in the David Evans case as well
00:10:42
well for our update we're going to go to The Vindicator and the David Evans case
00:10:49
they have been on this case since the beginning they were the ones that actually printed the famous pictures of
00:10:56
the dumpster behind the store that's correct and we know how important it is in these
00:11:04
cases for media coverage to get the answers and to find the persons responsible to keep these stories in the
00:11:13
spotlight and keep them on the minds and in the hearts of the public who might be
00:11:18
able to help law enforcement ultimately solve these cases and give these families some form of closure so go to
00:11:29
The Vindicator or to vindy.com if anybody wants to look this up and the headline of this article is cold cases
00:11:37
cracked in Boardman killer of two boys and the article reads the previously unsolved murders of two young boys from
00:11:45
the Boardman area in the early 1970s have been solved Ohio attorney general Dave yast in Township Police
00:11:55
announced during a news conference at the Boardman Township Government Center in the case of Bradley Bolino who was 12
00:12:02
at the time of his death Boardman officials announced that he was murdered after extensive DNA analysis over the
00:12:09
course of 50 years in 2001 bolo's clothes were sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal investigations forensic
00:12:16
laboratory for testing a DNA profile was obtained from the evidence left on the victim and over the years that DNA
00:12:24
profile was Advanced for checking against several Suspects at the time all of which came back negative this is
00:12:32
something that we talked about Captain when we did our coverage in 2022 we knew that in the Bolino case
00:12:39
that they had a list of I believe 15 suspects right they have to make a short list of suspects I think they whittel it
00:12:47
down to about 15 and of that 15 I believe they had tested nine DNA comparison over the course of the years
00:12:55
between 2001 and then leading up to actually solving the Bolino case in January of this year and a reminder
00:13:04
police saying that no connection from the killer to Brad Bolino so Joseph Norman Hill the perpetrator in that
00:13:12
homicide was not one of those 15 suspects that they were looking to comparison test DNA against if I'm law
00:13:19
enforcement I'm putting him on the list because again it's not the connection as
00:13:23
far as like a friend or family connection the connection would be the community that connection would be the
00:13:30
town well of course certainly he becomes a a person of interest and a suspect in
00:13:35
the David Evans case but he was not on that short list for the Bolino case until the DNA evidence confirmed and led
00:13:43
them to him earlier this year right the laboratory developed several different investigative Avenues including parabon
00:13:51
Labs which we've discussed here on the show several times according to Boardman police chief Todd worth and with the
00:13:58
assistance from the Lee County Sheriff's Department in leeburg Georgia they were
00:14:03
heavily involved in the scientific and forensic physical evidence angle of this investigation of recent the BCI
00:14:15
laboratory of Ohio identified a DNA match that enabled the police department to recognize Joseph Norman Hill Senior
00:14:22
as a person responsible for Brad bolo's murder Hill who was 32 in 197 to this article some new information here on
00:14:31
Hill said that he lived at1 Shadyside Drive in Borman but moved to California around 1978 and died in
00:14:40
2019 from natural causes however on Thursday this was this is in June actually but they're referencing the
00:14:50
Thursday those in attendant learned more about an additional case with similar circumstances to Brad Bolino 3 years
00:14:58
after the uction and death of Brad Bolino 13-year-old David Evans also of Borman Ohio was reported missing about a
00:15:06
mile away from bino's residence Evans was reported missing at midnight on January 18th 1975 after his father told
00:15:16
police that he was gone for most of the evening before he was diabetic missing for longer than 6 hours and later found
00:15:24
Frozen lying dead on his back in the backyard of home on Crestline Place in Borman on January 23rd keep in mind some
00:15:36
of this while it's while it's all true may just be a different description of what
00:15:41
we had previously the description we gave last year which seems to be accurate in my opinion was that he was
00:15:49
found behind some bushes near a business because we know that it was a realtor and and his wife that reported finding
00:15:57
the body after after leaving their place of business on January the 23rd that makes sense one day after his body was
00:16:04
found former Mahoning County deputy coroner Dr William Johnson ruled that the investigation quote held no element
00:16:13
of criminality and the immediate cause of death was due to diabetic coma according to the chief worth at the time
00:16:22
several police officers from around the area felt that evans's death was a homicide and we went into those reasons
00:16:29
why yesterday and in our original coverage last year and continued to pursue this investigation this death
00:16:37
investigation as a homicide the autopsy also found that Evans showed fractures to his left radius and a puncture wound
00:16:46
in his lower back that were suffered after he died the report also mentioned multiple abrasions on his face and upper
00:16:55
part of his back but no blood or semi fluid were found on his clothing after being reassigned the case Sergeant
00:17:05
Michael Hughes and gentleman who we spoke about yesterday Captain Albert kesich met with current Mahoning County
00:17:14
coroner David Kennedy who reviewed the case and determined Evans cause of death a homicide due to his broken bones and
00:17:24
postmortem puncture wounds so this is our current day police in Boardman the current day detectives who then went to
00:17:34
the current coroner all of these years later and said hey would you please review this file would you please review
00:17:42
the report taken of where and how the body was discovered would you please review the report by the original
00:17:48
coroner in the coroner's office so to be clear what we had we had referenced uh Dr David Blinky yesterday and in our
00:17:57
original coverage and here this report States County deputy coroner Dr William Johnson ruled that the investigation
00:18:05
quote held no element of criminality and the immediate cause of death was due to
00:18:10
diabetic coma yes that's absolutely true but Dr David binki signed off on that ruling after the fact right and to be
00:18:22
clear there's postmortem wounds correct so it's you know this kid goes into a a coma right he didn't he
00:18:33
didn't yeah he didn't go into a coma and die and continue to injure himself after
00:18:38
after death and very rightfully so back then in 1975 again the police are telling the
00:18:45
coroner no this is signs of a homicide this is signs that this kid died while being held captive by somebody after he
00:18:54
was abducted and all of these injuries postmortem are due to somebody trying to cover up that crime trying to cover up
00:19:02
con and conceal this body and get rid of his body after the fact right now current day after several DNA tests
00:19:12
conducted by BCI on the clothing still in the police department's possession again kudos to Boardman for not giving
00:19:18
up on this case this would have been a case easy to give up on when two coroners sign off on well he died of
00:19:25
natural causes there's no element of ality here in this case Boardman said nope and they never gave up on David
00:19:33
evans's case just like they never gave up on Brad bino's case the clothing is still in the police department's
00:19:41
possession they get it tested by BCI a profile contained in evans's underwear matched the DNA of Joseph Norman Hill
00:19:52
Senior surprise surprise and confirmed his connection to the additional murder so regardless of how David Evans passed
00:20:03
away to find this man's DNA in this kid's underwear to find this man's DNA on the person of Brad Bolino who was
00:20:15
killed three years before David Evans and I tell you look up a picture of these two boys if you want to do some
00:20:24
further investigating some f some further sleuthing these two boys you want to talk about a victim
00:20:31
type yeah it's dark at night yeah they might have been wearing hats and but these two boys look like they could be
00:20:40
cousins and another thing that's incredibly scary about this is look it's scary anytime somebody is
00:20:47
is picking a a child victim there there's no greater loss of life than that no greater loss than
00:20:55
this but Evans was 12 I'm sorry bolina was 12 and Evans was 13 and again these two boys were small for
00:21:04
their age and they looked much younger in my opinion than their than their age would indicate again crime of
00:21:12
opportunity if you know you're going to try to abduct the child the smaller the child the easier it is probably to
00:21:20
abduct them yeah and to look at where they believe that David Evans was last seen and his his hat his
00:21:33
his winter hat being found there lying on the ground trampled in the snow that to me indicates that this kid
00:21:42
was snatched somebody ripped this kid off the streets and put him in their vehicle and so you compare that we now
00:21:50
know that the same guy did this murder as well you have to wonder did he do the same thing to Brad Bolino 3 years ago go
00:21:58
did he did he did he snatch that kid rip him off of the streets pull him into his
00:22:03
goldcolored Monty Carlo and drive off with him the article goes on and it again they're talking about uh Captain
00:22:12
worth here who commended the Ohio Attorney General David yoast and Ohio BCI forensic
00:22:20
scientist Erica Y menz and Stacy Viola for their continued service and commitment to E each of these cases the
00:22:29
Bolino case and the Evans case quote a lot of different efforts went into that case not only the Boardman police
00:22:36
department but a lot of different agencies that have supported us in that one end quote attorney general Dave
00:22:45
yoast also praised the families of the victims and the team that worked on the second murder saying superheroes don't
00:22:54
always wear capes sometimes they wear lab coats our role at the Attorney General's office is not to be in law
00:23:01
enforcement it's to provide support Logistics expertise and forensics and so forth to help them do their jobs losing
00:23:12
a loved one is tremendously difficult especially when a family has to wait over 50 years to actually get the
00:23:19
answers that they always knew existed this is a quote from Mahoning County prosecutor and saying that David was the
00:23:29
victim of homicide at the hands of Joseph Norman Hill Senior this is the same man who took the life of Bradley
00:23:36
Bolino many years ago investigating these cases is not easy and it actually was impossible until certain techniques
00:23:44
related to DNA were developed and refined several years ago end quote so as the captain said when we let in here
00:23:53
a bit of a side note Kudos too to The Vindicator who covered these two cases from the very beginning and did Gang
00:23:59
Busters work on their continued coverage throughout the course of what amounted to over 50 years of media coverage in
00:24:08
the homicide cases of Brad Bolino and David Evans well again at the time we didn't know if there was a personal
00:24:15
connection between the Killer and Brad Bolino but there was still some speculation that these crimes were
00:24:24
connected yeah and that was certainly our belief as well and I was very happy that we were able to put our stamp on
00:24:31
that because that that's something that people would kind of hemmed and haed and limped in about giving their
00:24:37
opinion on are any of these cases connected and it I thought when we reviewed them and looked at them very
00:24:44
closely that the Bolino case and the Evans case looked very similar to me well the victimology seemed very
00:24:52
similar exactly victim type they're both walking home they were both in neighborhoods you know we don't know
00:24:58
exactly where unlike David Evans we don't know exactly where Bradley Bolino was picked up or pulled into that
00:25:07
vehicle but what we do know is he was leaving Applewood acres and he was heading back to his neighborhood so they
00:25:14
very likely could have been abducted in similar settings right at nighttime walking home a lot of similarities and
00:25:21
then discarded of the even even the getting rid of the bodies very similar one in the dumpster one behind the
00:25:30
bushes in in this area Town not far away from where Brad bolo's body was found either I also go I might go a step
00:25:38
further and question what else was done to David Evans we do know that the this coma
00:25:45
diabetic coma seems to have taken place but you know did did Joseph Norman Hill did he learn anything by leaving that
00:25:53
belt with the previous victim did he learn anything about about what not to leave with the his next victim could
00:26:01
that belt have made him nervous when he knew that the investigators were really honing in on that piece of evidence that
00:26:08
key piece of evidence in the Brad Bolino case the other thing when we're handing
00:26:13
out Kudos here captain that gets lost in the sauce on this story is David evans's
00:26:21
father unfortunately in the Bolino case the parents were not still alive to see their son's homicide solved and closed
00:26:31
after all of those years and unfortunately in David evans's case we have the same thing while siblings are
00:26:37
still alive we don't have the parents of David Evans to have seen this CL case closed all these years later and
00:26:46
especially my heartbreaks for his father so his father was one of the first to stand up with police and and
00:26:57
maybe even encourage police to stand up at the beginning of the case and tell the coroner no this there's something
00:27:05
terribly wrong here this is a homicide we need to be looking at it as such investigating it as such and David
00:27:13
evans's father never stopped fighting for his son he attempted to rally the troops
00:27:22
time and time again he opened up his own investigation that lasted years he wrote
00:27:29
letters to the mayor to the governor to the president of the United States on behalf of his son and his son's case
00:27:37
trying to get this case right the ship and get it to be investigated as a homicide and we know that bardman PD
00:27:46
they were treating it as such all of those years but again limited on what resources they could P pull in based off
00:27:53
of the coroner's conclusion and and ruling and so David evans's father was even communicating writing letters to
00:28:04
inmates looking for an informant looking for information about his son's murder meeting with with violent people and
00:28:13
career criminals behind prison bars in in in rooms interviewing them conducting his own
00:28:20
investigation this great man never gave up on his son and I would want nothing more than for his for for him to have
00:28:28
seen this to to witness that yes we we not only have changed our ruling all these years later but we also
00:28:37
found the guy that was responsible and then you raised all these other questions right this just we had these
00:28:45
questions when Joseph Norman Hill Senor was connected to the murder of Brad Bolino but now you have to double down
00:28:53
on all those questions he killed so he killed another boy the Bolino case wasn't just a
00:28:59
oneoff it was one of two it was one of how many you have to wonder at this point so he kills Bolino in 72 kills
00:29:08
Evans in 75 and then in 1978 he moves from bourman Ohio out to California and I don't have a list of
00:29:18
everywhere that he lived during that time San Bernardino is definitely referenced by police in their
00:29:26
information about Joseph nor Hill but also they state that he lived at in at least 14 different residences that they
00:29:34
can find in the state of California and so you have to wonder who or if did he kill anybody
00:29:44
before Brad Bolino and who and if did he kill after David Evans and police rightfully so were now saying at this
00:29:54
second news conference where they give us the information about David evans's death and their investigation into that
00:30:02
homicide that we're not only looking for information on Joseph Norman Hill here in Ohio we're not only looking for
00:30:10
information about him in California we are looking for information about him in All Parts in

00:32:33
questions you you were talking about given some Kudos these are cases that are almost 50 years old for them to
00:32:40
still have the evidence I mean how many cases are only 20 30 years old and they go well H we think we lost the evidence
00:32:49
in a in a move or there was a fire there's they come up with a lot of excuses why they don't have the evidence
00:32:55
anymore yeah it's it's like that old story that you hear with the uh the records right like so you talk to a
00:33:02
school an orphanage a church uh really any building and you always hear that story
00:33:10
of well we kept the records in the basement and in 1997 there was a flood and we lost all the records um so it it
00:33:18
happens in in all forms of of business and all forms of uh municipalities uh so yeah you're right kudos to them for
00:33:28
still having the evidence in these cases but then we talked about how police stated that the facts of the Thomas bar
00:33:36
case they believe suggested that that bar case is much different than bolo's case and evans's case now couple things
00:33:45
that we do know while we don't know a lot about Joseph Norman hill we do know that he was living in
00:33:51
Borman when Thomas bar was killed in 1970 it seems like he had a stretch there for about 6 Years or or maybe from
00:33:59
what I can tell he may have grown up in the area um again they're still trying to
00:34:04
piece together the timeline the Joseph Norman Hill timeline and put put him in different places and then examine any
00:34:12
kind of cases that he could be connected to now we will hear from the experts we
00:34:19
will hear from law enforcement that will say we're pretty confident that he's not
00:34:24
responsible for any other murders in this area uh before leaving for California what they're not confident in is in is
00:34:34
once he left Ohio but I want to throw this out there because I had I was able to team up with
00:34:42
a couple of people and I want to give a some shout outs here first up a shout out to Carolyn berardino she wrote a
00:34:49
fantastic article on the Boardman murders case for the porch light project years ago and it's up on on porchlight
00:34:58
online.org if you want to go there and read her article I highly recommend it it's one of the best articles about the
00:35:04
Boardman cases and also she's a local so she discusses what a lot of the suspicions were at the time even the
00:35:12
local rumors at the time who could be responsible for the murders of these three
00:35:18
kids so I spent a lot of time speaking with Carolyn and also a lot of time speaking with my friend Brian Smith the
00:35:27
reason being is Carolyn was able to provide True Crime garage with the David Evans case File police case File and she
00:35:36
provided that to us and I mean that that's big for us to be able to get a hold of a case File it
00:35:42
happens maybe a dozen times or so to get a complete case File like that the David
00:35:47
Evans case same as the Brad Bolino case it didn't go unsolved for a lack of effort it didn't go unsolved for 50
00:35:55
years due to a lack of effort right it's just a lack of technology and I can tell
00:35:59
you that having reviewed that file so I called upon Carolyn and and Brian to help me review this file and track down
00:36:08
any possible leads in it when this case was still unsolved because that case File 400 Pages approximately
00:36:16
filled a lot of them with vehicle descriptions possible suspects and things of that nature and some of those
00:36:23
suspects looked really good and now we sit here and we know that Joseph Norman Hill was ultimately responsible
00:36:30
for not only the David Evans case but the Brad Bolino case so I don't know that I'm so quick to say
00:36:38
hey we're confident that he wasn't responsible for anything else and I also want to throw this tidbit out there when
00:36:45
we were reviewing that file and when we were reaching out to other people involving the Bolino case and and mind
00:36:51
you we're reviewing this file before any of these cases were closed reaching out to other people
00:36:56
about the Bolino case and even the beard case because the be case while we had always heard this story that police
00:37:03
think it was he was jumped by a group of kids from from another high school on his way home that there was some kind of
00:37:09
kafuffle that broke out at the skating rink and then he's on his way home and they must have attacked
00:37:14
him one piece of information that we came across that makes you really wonder what happened is we found in the police
00:37:26
Poli report that when Thomas bar was found having been beaten severely that his his pants were either
00:37:35
off or down around his ankles right was it clear whether or not he had a belt or not that's a good
00:37:43
question um I we might have to save that for off the Record because when I'm driving to the garage this morning
00:37:49
that's what popped in my mind I'm like what can I find you know I wish I had brought that report with me to
00:37:57
review for you because I can't remember if they they mention a belt or not but what stood out
00:38:05
was the pants down around the ankles or or completely removed or in the process of being removed because we know that
00:38:13
the Abduction of David Evans the murder of Brad Bolino were sexually motivated homicides by Joseph Norman Hill
00:38:22
Senior I'm not saying that a group of kids or older boys didn't attack Thomas Barett I'm not saying that what I'm
00:38:31
saying is it's confusing for me and it's difficult for me to wrap my head around
00:38:35
the idea that they beat this kid up and then pulled down his pants well I agree and but I also disagree because if these
00:38:44
kids were trying to if they were trying to humiliate him that's one thing I I get it I get that but what I'm saying is
00:38:52
we know that these other two homicides a child homicide in bourman Ohio in the 70s extremely rare extremely rare and we
00:39:00
now know that two of the three cases are 100% connected the same perpetrator involved sexually motivated homicides of
00:39:07
a child I just I'm not trying to sell it to anybody but I'm saying until the evidence tells us otherwise we should
00:39:15
not completely disregard the idea that maybe Joseph Norman Hill came across Thomas beard on his way home walking by
00:39:25
himself right picks him up or gets him into his vehicle and somehow a a fight breaks out
00:39:34
between the two of them or Thomas bear decides to defend himself and he's larger than Brad Bolino larger than
00:39:41
David Evans older maybe puts up a a better fight if you will and that this is the end
00:39:50
result I don't think we can just disregard that and to say to that we have the information now that we know
00:39:59
that bar was able to communicate with the investigators not verbally but communicated that yes he knew his
00:40:07
attackers or knew his attacker you talked about it the connection before we knew from science
00:40:15
and from DNA that it's the same perpetrator is the area could Joseph Norman Hill have known
00:40:23
Thomas bear did Thomas bear get into his vehicle because he knew Joseph Norman Hill so I wouldn't I wouldn't go be so
00:40:32
fast to disregard that what's very interesting to me though Captain is as soon as the Bolino case was C was closed
00:40:40
with this evidence they immediately jumped back on the horse and went after the David Evans case right so you have
00:40:47
to wonder if they have DNA in the beard case you know what they're doing right now they're working that be case
00:40:56
and it could be any day that we find out who's responsible for the murder of Thomas beard Joseph Norman Hill or
00:41:04
otherwise well obviously with these developments and these cases we're going to have statements from law enforcement
00:41:10
yes both the the current uh prosecutor and the Ohio attorney general had very interesting comments about closing out
00:41:18
the David Evans case and some of this will Echo statements that were given in the Bolino case here we have the
00:41:25
Mahoning County prosecutor stating quote I was comfortable we would end up getting an indictment if Mr Hill was
00:41:32
still alive this in regard to the David Evans case so two cases where she is confident that they would get an
00:41:39
indictment from a grand jury and then we have Boardman police Sergeant Mike Hughes who's talking more
00:41:47
about 1975 and the community at the time he's saying we had two young boys dead Hugh said that in the case file on
00:41:58
David Evans it indicated a large amount of panic at the time in the township and
00:42:04
after having reviewed that file I can say 100% yes that file had portions of it decent percentage of that file was
00:42:13
filled with letters that were to either to the newspaper or to the police pointing the finger at other
00:42:22
people or saying look what what what do we have here what's going on in our community it's not safe for my children
00:42:29
to play outside anymore the prosecutor goes on to say quote Mr Hill ruined So Many Lives I only wish that he had lived
00:42:37
long enough to have been brought to Justice and then David Yos said the investigation has conclusively linked
00:42:44
both homicides to Joseph Norman Hill in both cases the Mahoning County prosecutor's office determin that the
00:42:50
forensic evidence would be sufficient to present the cases to a grand jury for indictment
00:42:56
if Joseph Hill had remained alive quote while Hill cannot fully be held accountable for these horrendous crimes
00:43:05
our hope is that after almost 50 years knowing who is responsible for Bradley and David's deaths can bring some sense
00:43:13
of closure to the families and friends Yos called Joseph Hill a serial killer and said that other victims are being
00:43:23
sought well this can take some time because again he moved to different locations and you're going to have to go
00:43:30
through a pretty large part of his life I I don't believe he just started killing people at the age of 30 yeah he
00:43:38
would have been 32 when Bolino was killed and one thing that the the data tells us and this is this is not the
00:43:49
biggest of sample sizes I think this is across maybe 90 serial killers or so and
00:43:55
of course throughout his in the United States there's been unfortunately more than 90 serial killers but the data in
00:44:02
that sample size tells us that the average age that a serial killer starts killing is in their late 20s and that
00:44:13
the average age of an active serial killer before being caught or killed or before they stop the few that
00:44:21
do stop would be their late 20s so we're talking 25 to 29 or 30 is that prime meridian age that we're looking at
00:44:35
and so this could be two years four years seven years before we know that Joseph Norman
00:44:42
Hill Senior killed anybody and the thing is too that I wouldn't just because we have two boys here given their young age
00:44:52
and and their very young appearance I wouldn't Li limit my investigation to just
00:44:58
males I think you have to look at any potential young girl victims too and unfortunately we sit here we're a month
00:45:09
away from them closing David evans's case scratch that a month and a half almost two months away and we still know
00:45:17
very little about Joseph Norman Hills life and part of that is any children that he has I know I kept saying that he
00:45:25
has one child he I believe it's you know it's been reported that he has one child and that
00:45:30
seems to be very accurate from everything I can find but that relationship was estranged for for many
00:45:36
many years on top of that the person that likely knew him the best who may have been fooled by him just like the
00:45:43
rest of us would be his wife and his wife unfortunately passed away in 1993 so any suspicions she had or any
00:45:52
blanks that she could fill in for us we don't have that resource to go to right I sit here
00:45:59
and I don't think that this guy does two of these and may maybe he moved out to California and started a new maybe he
00:46:07
said I'm going to walk away from this life and I'm never going to do this again but he wasn't able to stop himself
00:46:12
on that night in 1972 and he wasn't able to stop himself again three years later
00:46:17
in 1975 so when did he start when did he stop and then the other troubling thing
00:46:25
is his occup we don't get a lot of information about this occupation I've done some digging
00:46:29
on this and the information is just not there that he drove a truck for a a bottling company for a bottled water
00:46:36
company further digging actually says that he he may have been delivering produce at the same time or delivering
00:46:44
produce uh at other times in his life so he had a job that put him out on the road what were those routes how
00:46:52
far did those routes go were they limited to Boardman or Youngstown or that general area or did they go outside
00:46:59
of those areas and when was he not prowling for a victim you don't just shut this thing off you don't just say
00:47:05
you know what I stay pretty busy between 8:00 a.m. and 400 p.m. I don't abduct kids during those times you don't just
00:47:13
shut these things off and the scary thing is we've you know this Captain we've seen it time and time this guy
00:47:20
looks like a normal dude he looks like a normal guy that you would see out washing his car in the driveway in your
00:47:26
neighborhood and would probably say hi to him and probably say hi back he looks like a normal friendly guy and if Brad
00:47:33
Bina was hitching a ride that's probably why he got in the car with this dude because he looked like a normal regular
00:47:39
guy but he wasn't he is a serial killer exactly yo said it we're saying it and like David yoast and the police chief
00:47:51
for Boardman said we need to to find out more about this guy for the state of Ohio his time in California and all
00:48:01
parts in between it's you it's [Music] you well it's such a privilege that you join us here each and every week and
00:48:20
it's a privilege that we're able to have some positive updates on these cases yeah it's so rewarding and I hope it's
00:48:29
equally rewarding for the listeners because you're a part of all of this when we can review a case and then later
00:48:36
it gets solved yeah it's I mean there is a weird sense of satisfaction for us here in the garage and I hope that you
00:48:45
all feel it too and while we don't sit here and pretend that we had anything to do with the solving of either of these
00:48:52
cases we cover these stories our job is to s the pot keep them in the spotlight and we wouldn't be able to do that
00:48:59
without the audience and so just it's another good day here in the garage so many of the cases that we've covered
00:49:06
have ended up being solved and even solved relatively quickly after our coverage so yeah really good news for
00:49:14
the people of Boardman I know that this has haunted many of them for so many years in the families and unfortunately
00:49:21
the the parents not being around to see the the resolve in both of these cases do we have any recommended reading for
00:49:29
the beautiful listeners this week we do Captain this week we will be recommending a novel this is Nas Fatu by
00:49:37
the great Joe Hill and side note not the Jose of Hill that we've spent the last two hours talking about here in the
00:49:45
garage we have author Joe Hill this is a novel Nas Fatu is a dark fantasy horror
00:49:51
about a woman trying to save her son from a vicious super natural killer his name Charlie Ms III who kidnaps children
00:50:00
across the country in his 1938 rollsroyce wraith normally Captain when we recommend something other than True
00:50:08
Crime it is for those looking for a little escape from the heaviness and the Heartbreak of true crime stories but
00:50:15
this one reads very much like a supernatural crime and murder fiction so this recommendation is more for those
00:50:22
looking for a dark Journey with hints of True Crime so check out Nas Fatu that's Nas the
00:50:30
number four the letter A the number two by Joe Hill you don't have to write that
00:50:36
great title down right now no because we will have it listed on our recommended page on True Crime garage go there and
00:50:42
find a lot of other wonderful recommendations as well and until next week be good be kind and don't
