All >> [music] [music] [music] >> right, get ready to stuff your face with some candy corn.
00:00:25
Filthy animal. >> Well, hopefully you're a few weeks from doing that. Welcome to a hoo-ha
00:00:31
>> Browns football Monday. [laughter] >> Oh, that's right. Monday Night Football.
00:00:37
Son of a [ __ ] I'm happy now. >> The 49ers I look >> to, you know, everybody knows I'm a I'm
00:00:45
a big Browns fan, but I do like the 49ers as well. So, it's always even more of a better matchup when you
00:00:52
>> when you dig the other team. I like their coach. say a lot of got a lot of young stars, upcoming stars. Uh, so it
00:01:00
should be a fun fun evening. I'm hoping. >> Don't they have that Colin Kaepernick
00:01:05
guy? >> They do not have that guy. >> It's a joke. [laughter] >> Uh, but they their their coach Kyle
00:01:13
Shanahan. >> I'm a big Kyle Shanahan fan. And then >> gota like their quarterback, right?
00:01:20
>> Uh, Jimmy Grapes. >> Jimmy Jimmy. Jimmy Jimmy. >> Yeah. I mean I I mean I like him. I like
00:01:25
him. I just don't like him today. Today I do not like him. >> I want to see him sacked. Oh,
00:01:30
>> he will get sacked. >> Let's say four four times more or less. >> I'm four. Four would be awesome. Four or
00:01:39
five. >> I'm calling I'm calling more than four. >> I love Miles Garrett. I would love to
00:01:44
see him have two sacks tonight. >> Mhm. >> Did you see Mason Rudolph get knocked
00:01:50
out? >> No, I didn't. I mean, straight up knocked out like they So, the Steelers,
00:01:57
sorry, we'll only talk football for a little bit. We do have some true all we want to do.
00:02:02
>> But, so I watched the uh Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers game yesterday. It was a really good game. Uh
00:02:10
Ravens won 23-20, I believe was the final score, or 24 to 21, something like that. Won by a field goal in overtime.
00:02:19
Now, at it might have been the second quarter or third quarter, they were coming in to sack the
00:02:26
quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mason Rudolph. He got wedged between two
00:02:32
of the Baltimore Ravens who were running full speed. >> Mhm. >> And it was terrifying because you see
00:02:38
him on the replay. Well, on the live action, you saw it, but it was even more obvious
00:02:46
on the replay. They straight up knocked him out. He got wedged in between of them and between the two guys and you
00:02:52
see his whole body just go limp. >> Yeah. >> And the way he got hit was like Well, you're a big boxing and MM MMA
00:03:03
fan, so you've seen this more than most, >> but it it looked like a like when Mike
00:03:09
Tyson would just square somebody, hit somebody right in the jaw, and you just see them drop. Well, sometimes their
00:03:16
their chins are not as protected as they should be. >> Yeah. >> And and if you're getting hit in the
00:03:21
button with a helmet. >> Yeah. This was a this was a shoulder right to that chin. Right to the side of
00:03:26
the chin there. >> Yeah. And those pads, you know, you also notice with some of those pads, they're
00:03:31
able to get like up under that the face mask. So, but I I do know that the backup quarterback played pretty well.
00:03:39
>> He did it. But the the terrifying thing was Rudolph went like his body went completely limp, but you know when you
00:03:46
see like um they still have like some stiffness in some of their body >> like his his right arm,
00:03:54
>> he had his like fingers out and they stayed out like as he was falling down. It was it was some scary stuff. He did
00:04:00
get up and and walk off of the field. Um, I don't know if he knew where he was, [snorts]
00:04:08
what planet he's on, what day of the week it is. I hope that uh >> Yeah, Deontay Wilder, which uh the Brown
00:04:15
or the bronze bomber, he knocked a guy out one time where the guy fell down, but he still had his hands up and and he
00:04:22
was like jabbing. >> It's weird, isn't it? >> Oh, it's so strange. >> It's strange to see that.
00:04:26
>> It's almost like they're sleepwalking. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Yeah. Well, there has been a
00:04:33
several updates on a case that we covered back well, we covered this in May of 2017 and episodes 107 and 108.
00:04:42
We're talking about the missing Welch girls case. So, I I'm going to read a couple of
00:04:48
articles here, Captain. We'll we'll chat about these and you have an update for us as well. This first one is from Fox
00:04:55
23 News out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Defense attorneys for Ronnie Busk Busk, that's how I'm going to go with
00:05:03
it. Ronnie Buusic have requested more time to complete a mental compet competency evaluation on their client.
00:05:12
He is facing charges related to the 1999 disappearance of Ashley Freeman and Laura Bible. Buk appeared in court on
00:05:21
Friday. Now, this was not last Friday. It was Friday, September 27th for a status update on his evaluation, which
00:05:29
has been approved by a judge. His attorney says she has selected an expert to do the evaluation. She says that
00:05:38
Buick was shot in the head in 1978, which may have caused brain trauma. Buick has previously said he can't
00:05:47
remember anything about the girls murders or where their bodies are due to past drug use. So, he's getting rewarded
00:05:55
for past drug use. The trial will not move forward until the evaluation is complete. Defense attorney Gretchen
00:06:03
Mosley said she has not set a date for the evaluation. Prosecutors say it would be inappropriate for them to try and
00:06:12
negotiate or move forward until they know whether Buick has the competency to stand trial or be prosecuted. The
00:06:20
defense is bringing their own expert. Prosecutors can bring in their expert, their own expert as well if they're not
00:06:27
satisfied with the results of the first evaluation. Now, while he's in court, remember this case is where she was um
00:06:38
uh sorry, Lorie Bible was staying the night at Ashley Freeman's home. >> Yeah. >> And Ashley Freeman's parents were
00:06:48
killed. The home that they lived in was set on fire. And the two girls were in their early teens. What were they about
00:06:56
15, 16? And they were missing. >> Yeah. Well, they must have been 16 because I remember Ashley Freeman had a
00:07:02
vehicle. They were missing and have been missing ever since then since 1999. Now,
00:07:08
in 2018, there was a huge break in the case. Apparently, what was going on here, Captain, was
00:07:18
there were several people that kind of knew what happened. There was like, I don't know, 12 or or 13 people that kind
00:07:25
of knew what happened. They out of fear never spoke to the police. There were three men that are believed
00:07:36
to have abducted the two girls. The the general story is this that they they went to the Freeman home with the
00:07:45
intention of collecting on a drug debt that they had with Freeman's father. >> Okay. And once they were there, I don't
00:07:54
know the specifics because the problem we have here is two of the men, two of the suspects are dead. And this this
00:08:02
last guy that's left, this Ronnie Buick, he either, if we take him at his word, either doesn't know or remember anything
00:08:11
about this situation or he's pretending not to and he's not talking. >> Right. So, I don't know if some kind of
00:08:19
scuffle broke out or if the intention was to show up and kill Mr. Freeman. The result though we know is they killed the
00:08:26
parents and abducted the two girls. The reason why some people knew about this is so let me give you the names.
00:08:36
I'm not going to read this. I said I was going to read two articles but I can just sum it up for you here. Um, we have
00:08:44
Ronnie Buusic is one of the people. He's the one being accused and eventually he's going to go to trial if he's
00:08:51
considered competent to stand trial. But the other people we have is Dave Pennington and Phil Welch.
00:09:00
>> Mhm. Now, as said, those two guys are dead. Um, disturbingly, one of the big breaks in the case was Welch's
00:09:10
ex-girlfriend said that Welch decorated the walls of their trailer with missing posters
00:09:17
bearing the girl's faces after they vanished. He kept photos of the girls bound and gagged while lying on a bed in
00:09:24
a red leather briefcase. >> Yeah. These were Polaroid photos. >> Yeah. And she says that she she found these
00:09:33
Polaroids while he was in jail. Now he's in jail for for be for beating her up. So he was abusing this woman.
00:09:42
>> Yeah. >> She found him and unfortunately she was too afraid to come forward for all of
00:09:47
these years. And I mean rightfully so. I I I wish it would have >> This guy's a [ __ ] stain.
00:09:54
>> Yeah. I wish there would have been a break sooner in the case. But, you know,
00:09:56
she says >> it's better late than never, though. >> She says that uh she was told by him, by
00:10:03
Phil Welch, that if you tell anybody about this, you're going to end up in a pit like those two girls. So, there was
00:10:12
some interesting things that I came across when I was diving into all the updates. But these
00:10:20
are these are the sick bastards that were bragging about what they did to these girls at like parties and stuff.
00:10:26
>> Correct. Correct. And so we were right in our assessment of the case when we when we covered it. We both suspected
00:10:33
that the perpetrator of the murders and the kidnapping would would be more than one person. So we were right in that
00:10:40
sense. We did name some potential suspects who have been named in the public before.
00:10:47
None of these guys' names were were on our radar right at the time. Now, the rumor is that the two girls are in a pit
00:10:57
that their remains would be in a pit in Pitcher. I'm going to try to say that right. Pitcher, Oklahoma. This would be
00:11:04
about a 30 minute drive from the Welch area. >> Yeah, I want to say possibly a pit, but
00:11:11
they abandoned mine possibly. >> Mhm. So, I'm sure they're looking for them and and looking for leads for more
00:11:19
information there. Well, this guy I I don't see how he does not go to prison for this. It seems pretty obvious if
00:11:27
they can if they can put if they can show pictures of these two missing girls. And then they have this whole
00:11:34
theory where we have witnesses that are going to come forward and going to testify that that this man along with
00:11:42
these two dead men were telling people what they did and it was known what they did. I don't see how he doesn't go to
00:11:49
prison. I guess if he's considered mentally unstable that he would he would go elsewhere, but
00:11:57
I suspect that that it's kind of convenient that he doesn't remember anything. Um, it's unc it's inconvenient
00:12:05
that he didn't die from that gunshot to the head back in 78. Um, maybe this whole thing would have been avoided.
00:12:13
But what's sad is we have we have Laura Bible's parents who have never recovered
00:12:20
her remains. They've never had, you know, a proper memorial service for their daughter. They've not been able to
00:12:28
lay her to rest, so to speak. >> Yeah. On a side note, it looks like uh HLN is going to come out with a show
00:12:35
called Hell in the Heartland. Um or maybe it already came out. It says it's what happens when you're reading stuff
00:12:44
live. Uh I guess it came out June 2nd, 2019. >> Okay. >> And it's a four-part series on this
00:12:52
case. >> Maybe they'll run it again once they figure out if this guy can stand trial
00:12:57
or not. >> Yeah. >> Unfortunately, it's been I mean, it's been 20 years and it doesn't sound like
00:13:04
a court date is set for for this guy yet. It sounds like we're going to have to get some more evaluations done and
00:13:12
then figure it out as we go. >> And it looks like the guy that hosted the show is going to be writing a book
00:13:18
that's going to come out uh in 2020 and that's called Hell in the Heartland: Murder, Meth, and the Case of Two
00:13:25
Missing Girls. Um there is, you know, I don't want to jump off subject too much, but I've been
00:13:32
reading a lot of stuff um with the deli murders with possible drug connections with the with the one
00:13:40
of the fathers and and again, it when you're studying these cases, when you're looking to these cases, you find so many
00:13:49
similarities. Mhm. >> Um, and just like with the case that we we covered, we're going to cover this
00:13:55
week, there's similarities in other cases that that that we've seen. >> And you said there was some Tyler Davis
00:14:03
stuff. >> Oh, yeah. Hold on. Uh, some Yeah. So, there was a press conference. There's not much. I mean,
00:14:10
other than we don't know anything. >> You know what's weird? I saw a U. >> Moving on. I'm just No, no, there's some
00:14:19
stuff. >> Well, real quick before you get into that, I did see >> What day was it?
00:14:27
>> They had a little Tyler Davis blip on the >> Well, there's a news. Yeah, there was a
00:14:34
press conference Thursday. >> Here we go. On Monday, detectives asking for tips in
00:14:42
the case of Lache Dunie, who was a young woman who was last seen near Ohio State's campus back in January of 2018.
00:14:49
And just today on the case of Tyler Davis, last seen in the East area back in February. Our Haley Nelson talked to
00:14:56
another family tonight, still searching. >> Yeah, that was from uh Friday's news.
00:15:01
>> Yeah, so on Thursday there was a press conference at 3. Um, now I've talked to
00:15:08
the main detective on this. It was the case was then transferred. Normally with a missing person case, once they kind of
00:15:15
run out of leads, they transfer the case. That then was again transferred. Uh, now this detectives has been on the
00:15:23
case for about 3 months. So, it could have been uh transferred to like a group of detectives. That makes any sense?
00:15:30
Like maybe you have a lead on it, but then you get transferred. So, um, you know, not a lot of stuff. They did play
00:15:38
the clip of him, um, which what was so interesting about the press conference was to talk to the
00:15:48
lead detective weeks ago and him saying, you know, we have audio clips of Tyler after supposedly
00:15:57
the phone went dead. >> Mhm. >> And he's talking to Google. So, the fact that your your your smartphone can keep
00:16:03
that and store that somehow is pretty interesting. So, they k they played this clip and I don't know why they played
00:16:09
the clip, but it was him um Tyler's voice and and Tyler saying uh take me to East Suites.
00:16:18
So, but what the detective said was this this shows somebody that is trying to get back to their hotel,
00:16:26
>> right? It's not somebody that's trying to flee the area and and disappear into
00:16:31
thin air and leave his family hanging, >> right? This is somebody that wants to get home. The the thing that I thought
00:16:37
was interesting, they kept on asking them, uh, are you following the the podcast and I kept on saying just say
00:16:44
our name, you know, because we we interviewed, uh, >> well, I think there's another one that's
00:16:50
>> Britney. Yeah, I think there's one that's now just focusing on >> devoted to the Tyler Davis case. Yeah.
00:16:56
>> And uh you know, >> I'm not certain. [laughter] >> I couldn't find it. I couldn't find
00:17:00
>> Yeah. If somebody goes looking for it, they can't find it. Don't blame me. I just That's the rumor I heard. I've not
00:17:05
actually seen it or or listen to it. >> Yeah. And I mean, there was a statement from Britney just saying that, you know,
00:17:10
it's been a long time and our family deserves answers. And and you know, talking to her back at back then, I
00:17:16
mean, it was difficult because of how much time has passed and now over 200 I believe 220ome days now he's been
00:17:24
missing. That's a long time. So, um, but the other frustrating thing I think about the the report was they're talking
00:17:32
about the GPS. Uh, and so they were showing this map, but there's this swamp land and then it
00:17:39
shows the detective, you know, kind of waste deep in this little swamp area, >> right?
00:17:45
>> And it seems like the GPS tracks him to this location and they haven't fully searched this swamp area. And there's a
00:17:54
part of you that just wants to go, why are you having a press conference? You should be searching the swamp area. If
00:18:01
the GPS information is taking you to that spot or close to that spot and you're telling me that there's a water
00:18:08
that's waste high that's, you know, acres long, that needs to be checked. Well, hope hopefully
00:18:17
if you know by doing the press conference, we get somebody that can come forward and that has an expertise
00:18:24
in searching that type of land and maybe they can come in and offer their their services to help out in this case. What
00:18:34
you said he Davis said he was searching for directions to the sweets at Eastston
00:18:42
or East Suites. What did what did you say? >> Yeah. So he was basically talking to
00:18:46
Google and Tyler was and saying um take me to East Suites, >> which is weird cuz when you when you say
00:18:57
that nothing jumps in my mind as like that even existing. Right. >> Right. But he might again he was
00:19:06
intoxicated. He might not have known what the place was called. There's >> also take me is kind of a weird thing
00:19:13
[laughter] >> because to me that's something that you would say to a driver >> and not
00:19:19
>> Yeah, that's not something >> not your phone, >> right? >> That's something you would say to
00:19:24
somebody else, >> but again, you're um >> he's believed to be intoxicated, >> highly intoxicated and and you know, but
00:19:32
but just because you went out drinking doesn't mean you should disappear. But they don't say in the press conference
00:19:39
that his phone or that Google provided him with any type of directions that we know of. It could they could
00:19:47
have, but we we are unaware because like >> on my map app, >> you know, I I so many times on this show
00:19:56
say Google Maps and I rarely ever use actual Google Maps. I it's usually just the app that's on one of my devices or
00:20:05
the map on my computer. >> But um it's kind of like when you say Kleenex, but it's really just a tissue.
00:20:13
You know that give me a Kleenex. Um, so when I type in a search for just something as broad or vague as Eastn
00:20:23
Suites, I get Spring Hill Suites, Town Place Suites, Woodpring Suites, Comfort Suites, Holiday and Express in Suites,
00:20:32
and Hampton Inn and Suites and Columbus. This is all in the roughly in the eastern area, what we would call the
00:20:40
eastern area. the all these. So, we got six different things that would pull up.
00:20:48
Five of them are within one mile of each other. You almost wonder like if his phone
00:20:54
started giving him directions if he's I mean if he's just walking to the wrong places.
00:21:00
>> Yeah, possibly >> because the Hilton where he was staying does not come up in my search when I
00:21:05
just type in East Suites or say Eastn Suites, >> right? Yeah, it's a it's a it's tricky,
00:21:11
but like I said, it seems to me when they were talking that seems like they have some direction of what where, you
00:21:18
know, they can follow him as far as GPS goes. And anytime you have the a wooded area that's also
00:21:26
water up to your waist, >> he's probably >> to me that's, you know, that's the answer that should be searched. and and
00:21:34
if it's about uh if if it's um I mean they've done a lot of searching in that area and if it's about money or whatever
00:21:42
I'm sure that they could get the community to to raise that money very quickly to try to get answers
00:21:48
>> uh in this case cuz what a sad thing you know seems to be this great guy good friend
00:21:55
to many um and a husband and a great father and just goes missing >> [music]
