Kerrie Ann Brown /// Part 1 /// 626

November 09, 2022 / 46:51

This episode covers the unsolved murder of Carrie Ann Brown, a 15-year-old girl from Thompson, Manitoba. Hosts Nick and Captain discuss the details surrounding her disappearance on October 16, 1986, and the subsequent discovery of her body two days later. They highlight the impact of her case on the community and her family.

The episode begins with a brief introduction to Carrie, her life, and the events leading up to her disappearance. Carrie was described as a normal teenager who enjoyed sports and spending time with friends. The hosts recount her last day, including a doctor's appointment and a party at a friend's house.

As the night progressed, Carrie became uncomfortable when her ex-boyfriend showed up at the party with another girl. After deciding to leave, she walked outside but vanished shortly thereafter. Her friend Nicole, who was supposed to stay with her, became worried when Carrie did not return.

The next day, Carrie's family reported her missing, leading to a search that ended tragically when her body was discovered in a wooded area. The hosts discuss the gruesome details of her murder, including the injuries she sustained and the lack of leads in the investigation.

Throughout the episode, the emotional toll on Carrie's family and friends is emphasized, particularly the ongoing struggle for answers in her case. The hosts encourage listeners to reflect on the impact of such tragedies on small communities.

a beer let's talk some true crime [Music] in 2016 the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in
00:02:53
Manitoba Saskatchewan British Columbia decided it was time to revisit a cold Cold Case the 1986 homicide that rattled
00:03:03
the town of Thompson and haunted its inhabitants ever since the Specter of the Dead 15 year old girl
00:03:10
cast a Paul over the whole place and there was nothing new so the RCMP took on a novel approach
00:03:20
on October 16 2016 30 years after the murder the RCMP MB Twitter feed halted its
00:03:32
usual updates and instead tweeted the following devastating messages hello I am Carrie Ann Brown
00:03:43
I was raped beaten and murdered 30 years ago today can you help find my killer what you did to me that night destroyed
00:03:53
my family and friends I didn't do anything wrong I was a happy 15 year old girl their silence
00:04:03
but someone knows come forward stop being cowards how were you able to keep what you did
00:04:12
to me hidden I want to talk about the day I was killed I want people to know what happened to
00:04:19
me I want the Killer caught my house at six Red River Road in Thompson was simple but I loved it my
00:04:28
dad and brother Trevor still live there today I loved hockey and the Penguins were my
00:04:34
favorite team Mario Lemieux was so great how could you not love them to this day
00:04:42
my friends remember my sense of humor I had a great laugh and nothing was funnier than playing
00:04:49
pranks truth is I was a very normal 15 year old girl athletic well liked cheerful and
00:04:58
compassionate I didn't have any enemies everyone has their quirks Bridges were mine
00:05:07
I don't know why but I hated them and was always nervous crossing over one okay for people that don't know my story
00:05:17
My Last Day alive was 30 years ago today it was 1986. and it was a Thursday I woke up with Coco the bear I had so
00:05:29
many plush animals but Coco was the one I couldn't go without school that day was okay
00:05:37
I had so many friends that going to school at Rd Parker Collegiate was actually fun
00:05:44
I loved gym class I was only five foot one inch 110 pounds but fast and feisty I was a great Runner and could easily
00:05:57
beat my brothers first two classes that day were back-to-back typing then math and
00:06:02
English I couldn't wait for Jim at the end of that day FYI in 1986 I was still learning to type on a giant
00:06:12
typewriter not fun I could not wait for lunch it was a normal day I had a doctor's
00:06:19
appointment that afternoon but otherwise everything else was completely ordinary
00:06:24
I had been having headaches just wasn't feeling well so I left school for a bit for a doctor's appointment I went home
00:06:31
after school didn't have a job but my parents gave me ten dollars a week for allowance
00:06:37
I don't know what it was that afternoon being 15 I guess but I was a little upset and a bit
00:06:44
anxious after my appointment we ate supper together as a family that night my last night alive I'm so
00:06:52
thankful for that I know they are too we ate roast beef that night but my favorite meal was pepperoni and mushroom
00:07:00
pizza from Santa Maria I remember my brothers fighting over the donuts for dessert and being worried I
00:07:06
wouldn't get one there was a party that night and my mom and dad said I could stay at my
00:07:12
girlfriend's house for a sleepover before the party my girlfriend came over and we walked to Thompson Billiards
00:07:20
I never walked anywhere in town alone it was a warm night with no snow but I wore the new dark jacket my family
00:07:28
gave me for my birthday anyway we left Thompson Billiards and walked over to 41 Cooper Road which wasn't very
00:07:36
far we only stayed on Cooper Road for a few minutes then we walked to the party at
00:07:42
my friend's house at 11 trout Avenue I know what you're thinking yes some of us were drinking
00:07:48
my friend's parents were home though and they were supervising it was so much fun I had really great
00:07:55
friends and we were having an awesome time laughing listening to music and hanging
00:08:00
out then a friend showed up we didn't get along anymore it sucked I had been having such a good time too we chatted
00:08:08
for a while it was formal and polite it didn't help my night was ruined I wanted to leave so
00:08:16
my girlfriend and I decided to go for a walk and talk we got to the back door when my friend
00:08:22
decided she better go downstairs to tell our friends where we were going I stayed standing there near the back
00:08:28
door to wait for her my friend's mom was the only other person around I went outside to wait
00:08:35
that's when it happened I was strong and put up a fight but it wasn't enough this is the
00:08:43
unsolved case of Carrie Brown and this is true crime garage [Music] foreign 1986 Carrie Ann Brown was just as you
00:09:09
heard a normal 15 year old girl living in the great white North Carrie was born in Burke's Falls Ontario on August 19
00:09:18
1971 in 86 she lived in her family's house on Red River Drive in the town of Thompson Carrie's parents are Jim and
00:09:27
Ann Brown and she has two older brothers Trevor and her half-brother Ian from his
00:09:33
mother's first marriage Jim had a job at the inco mine and worked at Thompson General Hospital as a medical
00:09:40
transcriptionist the town of Thompson is a mining town named after the family that owned the mine the town itself had
00:09:49
only been around since 1956 and although it had just about 12 000 residents it was known as The Hub of the north
00:09:57
because it was the only place in the area with Access to Health Care Facilities shopping and other services
00:10:04
tens of thousands of Outsiders came to the town yearly it was a tight-knit community with residents who looked out
00:10:11
for each other it was also a very outdoorsy area with hunters and campers and fishermen comprising much of much of
00:10:19
the population those who didn't work in the mine of course for teenagers it was kind of a boring town and in typical
00:10:27
teen fashion they had to come up with inventive ways to find excitement having parties drinking a little bit and dating
00:10:34
as we learned in the trailer Carrie was a fun-loving girl that was athletic she loved gym class captain and she loved
00:10:42
ice hockey she was just at that age where she was between being a girl and being a woman she still loved her
00:10:49
stuffed bear cocoa but she also had recently split up with a boyfriend more on that in a minute Carrie's parents had
00:10:56
some troubles and that Carrie's mom and brother Trevor both suffered from retinitis Pigmentosa and by the time our
00:11:03
story takes place Anne was blind Carrie herself had been having headaches but it does not seem that she suffered
00:11:10
from the same Affliction let's get to the night in question so this is going to be October 16th captain and this is a
00:11:17
Thursday now as we heard in today's trailer Carrie had a normal school day minus the doctor's appointment that
00:11:24
would have been outside of the normal day for her she got out of school about 3 30 Carrie and her dad picked up a
00:11:31
couple of donuts as they were out buying her a winter coat they had dinner together as a family and then there was
00:11:38
a kerfuffle over the donuts and Carrie was a little upset but then she rallied and she was going to hang out with
00:11:47
friends anyway so she kind of got over it there was a party at Carrie's friend's house Doug crocus so Doug is a
00:11:55
classmate a schoolmate of carries he is one year older than her and her two best
00:12:01
friends Rhonda and Nicole will be joining her at this teen age Gathering before the party Rhonda who lived nearby
00:12:10
came over to Carrie's house to pick her up Carrie was wearing a pink outfit with
00:12:16
her favorite Pittsburgh Penguins jacket around 7 PM that night they wandered to the Billiards place then another
00:12:24
friend's house and then to Doug's Doug lives at 11 trout Avenue so from my understanding here Captain Doug's house
00:12:32
is quite a ways away from Carrie's house from my understanding they walked there
00:12:39
in a rather large group of friends so they're walking there so three of them and then more kids meet up with them
00:12:47
along the way now we have this big pack of teenagers all making their way to Doug's place right they get there around
00:12:55
9 30 maybe 10 at the latest now Nicole lived on the other side of town from Kerry and Rhonda but just two blocks
00:13:03
away from Doug's house the neighborhood is the Westwood neighborhood and it is described as a middle class residential
00:13:10
area this Gathering was later described by Doug on the somebody knows something podcast which covered this case
00:13:18
extensively in season five it was a group of about 25 kids who knew each other pretty well ranging in age from 15
00:13:27
to 18. some were legal to drink and some weren't like Carrie and her girlfriends
00:13:32
they were in the younger batch of kids but there was some beer there Doug's mom was home and was on board with all of
00:13:42
this and according to Doug although kids were coming and going a bit throughout the evening it was not like a raging
00:13:48
party this was kind of a kind of a low-key thing and he says that he knew every single person that came to his
00:13:55
house that night there were no strangers there were no out-of-towners there were
00:13:59
no creeps that has been reported to been at this party well this this happens all
00:14:04
the time in high school somebody tells you hey old Doug is having a party whether or not you're invited you
00:14:11
probably know somebody that's invited you don't feel intimidated to just walk into a party you're probably going to
00:14:17
know somebody 99 of the people there are going to be from your high school well and when you're growing up in an area
00:14:24
that doesn't have a whole lot to do or a whole lot of excitement for teenagers and frankly there's many places like
00:14:31
that as we said they kind of have to create their own excitement and as you said it's not so much hey I was invited
00:14:39
to this party but if you tag along with somebody that was you're in the door yeah or in my high school sometimes
00:14:45
people just pass out flyers to somebody's house we gotta hey did you get the flyer you're invited sometimes
00:14:52
that can go terribly wrong or sometimes terribly from my understanding Captain it's this is a very typical party now we
00:14:59
said that this was a Thursday but we should point out that there was no school scheduled for that Friday so it
00:15:05
makes sense that Doug is having this party he says it's just a group of high school friends all hanging out in Doug's
00:15:12
basement they're playing music they're talking they're eating snacks all pretty much normal stuff and there's parents
00:15:18
there his mother is there she doesn't have everybody under a microscope but according to her and according to Doug
00:15:24
later they both said that she was somewhat supervising or The Chaperone of this party if you will yeah the the
00:15:30
visual I get is Eric forman's basement right and everybody's having a party in Eric Foreman's basement the way that
00:15:39
this evening is going about everybody's just I mean everybody's having a great time that's what's always been reported
00:15:46
everybody was having a great time until Carrie her ex-boyfriend remember she just broke up a few days prior his name
00:15:56
is Chuck and he shows up to the party and he's not alone he's actually with a previous girlfriend of his somebody that
00:16:04
he dated before Carrie Carrie knew that Chuck had gotten back with his ex-girlfriend so there was nothing like
00:16:12
confrontational about Chuck being there and Carrie being there but Carrie did say that she felt
00:16:18
awkward and uncomfortable this is what she expressed to her friends and it was probably just because the breakup was
00:16:25
pretty recent well way to go butt face Chuck showing up with your ex-girlfriend ruining the party now we read the tweet
00:16:31
from the RCMP in today's trailer that said Carrie became upset because she didn't want to be there when her
00:16:39
ex-boyfriend was there and we get it everyone's been in that position no matter what age you are it's it can be
00:16:46
awkward yeah it's you know Carrie's sitting there having a good time at the party her boyfriend her ex-boyfriend
00:16:52
walks in with his ex-girlfriend and the first thing you're thinking is awkward and this is you know 15 year old kids
00:17:02
and this all remember how important all of this stuff seemed when we were 15 and
00:17:07
then you grow up and realize it's not important at all but Carrie decides hey maybe it's time
00:17:15
to leave and they have a curfew anyway she's going to stay the night at her friend's house but her friend has a
00:17:20
curfew and Carrie has a curfew that even when staying at a friend's house that she needs to observe
00:17:26
she's only 15. now it doesn't sound like Carrie would be the type to leave a party on her own you heard in the tweets
00:17:34
saying she had never walked anywhere alone at night but remember Nicole her friend lived near Doug's house
00:17:43
and Carrie was planning on sleeping over at Nicole's now looking at Google Maps for context shows us that Doug didn't
00:17:52
live in the middle of nowhere in fact we would describe his neighborhood as thickly settled residential area with
00:18:00
blocks and blocks of houses surrounding it which makes sense on why these kids gathered in a group and walked to his
00:18:07
house correct and this is not a situation where we have this girl who has a little
00:18:16
to drink and then she stumbles out the door into the frozen tundra never to be seen again this is an area that would be
00:18:22
full of cars and houses you know but all but although by this point we're talking
00:18:27
about we're getting close to to the midnight hour so maybe maybe a little sleepy at this point uh the the town
00:18:35
anyway well we have to remember the date because I think we're so used to just things being open 24 7. and this is in
00:18:44
the 80s but back in the 90s things would close down about nine o'clock ten o'clock Carrie and her friend Nicole end
00:18:51
up going upstairs remember they're getting ready to leave and presumably at this point they're talking over what
00:18:58
their options are and they don't want to do this in front of the other high schoolers Carrie is voting that they
00:19:05
leave so the two decide that they're going to leave they walk out of Doug's house when Nicole realizes that she had
00:19:13
forgotten her purse so they turned around and walked back to his house Carrie is waiting upstairs she did not
00:19:23
want to go back down into the basement where all the kids were right the tweets indicate that Doug's mom
00:19:30
was there as well like we said earlier now Nicole ran into her ex so a different kid on the stairs they have a
00:19:39
conversation sounds like he wanted to get back together or something like that but it's a lengthy conversation that
00:19:45
Nicole would later say lasted for about 10 minutes or so Nicole could see Carrie
00:19:51
at the top of the steps during portions of this conversation but at some point her friend Carrie stepped away so she
00:19:59
could no longer see her and she's continuing on this conversation yeah but we've all been there you know he you're
00:20:04
at that party you it's time to go your friend runs into her ex they're having a conversation so you keep making your
00:20:12
presence known like hey it's time to leave let's let's get going and then eventually eventually Carrie
00:20:20
stops making our presence known to Nicole yeah maybe she wants to give a little privacy for their conversation we
00:20:26
don't know it's hard to say but while she's upstairs Doug The Host he recalls seeing Carrie upstairs and he
00:20:36
tells her hey don't you probably shouldn't leave on your own it's late you should wait for Nicole Carrie then
00:20:44
asked Doug to go get Nicole so he went back down to the basement Nicole then goes upstairs a few minutes
00:20:51
we're talking just a few minutes later and by this point it had started to snow outside
00:20:57
and Carrie was gone Nicole could see footprints in the snow leaving Doug's house
00:21:05
and the footprints they stopped at the end of the driveway at the road and there of course were tire tracks on the
00:21:11
road well this is difficult too because you have these kids going in and out of this house but mainly using the basement
00:21:18
but I remember being at parties like this when I was in high school and there would be a little bit of a crowd outside
00:21:25
maybe coming into the party or leaving the party or trying to make plans on what is
00:21:33
next right the other thing I remember there would usually be some kind of pointless silly
00:21:38
argument some drama and like always one person storms off into the night on foot alone yeah
00:21:47
weirdly that happened that almost every party I went to so Nicole she can't find her friend she decides
00:21:54
all right I'm gonna go outside start walking and I should encounter Carrie on my way back to my house which does not
00:22:02
happen so then she well let me say the obvious though too about these parties is Carrie and her friends yes they're 15
00:22:10
but but Doug is older so a lot of these people go into this party are not showing up on foot they're driving their
00:22:18
vehicles Nicole turns around and she doubles back to Doug's a couple of times she's not just walking this route
00:22:26
repeatedly but she's also scouring the area essentially looking for her friend and she finds nothing on several trips
00:22:35
at some point she gets worried and frightened for her friend she starts crying and she misses her curfew so she
00:22:43
doesn't make it home until about an hour late which would be 1am and her mom would later say that she saw her
00:22:51
daughter Nicole throwing up and I don't know if she drank too much or if this was a combination of drinking and and
00:22:59
being upset about her friend um so it sounds like her and her mom have a little bit of a argument about
00:23:06
Nicole drinking at the party but from all the reports I've seen this is where things start getting really weird
00:23:13
because we're only talking about a few minutes that Carrie would have been outside by
00:23:18
herself somehow she vanishes during that time and Nicole makes it back to her house she's late as we said
00:23:27
because she spent some time looking for her friend the reports state that Nicole's mom was not aware that Carrie
00:23:34
was going to be sleeping over that night so Nicole of course she feels incredibly
00:23:40
guilty about all of this now in fact she says that she went through years and years and years of therapy to try to
00:23:48
cope with this in some form or fashion but right she stops looking for Carrie that night and then she goes to bed and
00:23:57
sleeps in the next day she likely just like any other kid would she likely went to bed thinking that Carrie either just
00:24:05
decided to go home or get a ride home somehow or that Carrie would turn up well if we're going to question
00:24:12
Nicole's the amount of alcohol that Nicole might have uh consumed we have to question the same thing when it comes to
00:24:21
Carrie so we know that Carrie was upstairs then she leaves or we're assuming she leaves the party and then
00:24:29
we have this track of footprints that lead to the end of the driveway and now we got some tire marks this is not a
00:24:37
good situation well and we also have to point out something here and keep this in mind as we're going through the
00:24:43
events here you know one of the benefits of constant connectivity that we currently have today that we forget
00:24:51
about that when especially when we're complaining about cell phones and cell phone usage by younger people these days
00:25:00
but today Kerry's friends would be able to see on Snap map you know exactly where their friend was
00:25:07
and maybe she could have been found or even saved that night but we're talking about 1986 so that was not an option
00:25:17
yeah or Carrie if she felt like hey it's time to go Nicole let's take care let's say Carrie
00:25:25
thought that Nicole was being a little rude by talking to her ex a little bit too long maybe there'd be some text
00:25:31
messages sent to her friend hey it's time to go or hey I'm going to just take off
00:25:37
walking and and I'll eventually meet up with you but obviously they didn't have that technology to stay in contact and
00:25:46
then navam disappears [Music] [Music] all right we are back to the windows to the walls cheers everybody cheers to you
00:26:20
Colonel cheers to everybody out there in listener land in the morning on that Friday there was
00:26:26
no school that's I mean praise the Lord that's the best Thursday you can have when you're a kid no school on Friday
00:26:34
Carrie's brother Trevor had been drinking at his buddy Jerry's house the night before
00:26:41
and he recalls that on Friday morning Carrie's friends started calling looking for her so at first Carrie's family
00:26:51
Trevor her brother and in the family the Brown family they don't really think anything of this right I mean Carrie's a
00:27:00
typical 15 year old teenager but they get worried when Nicole when her friend Nicole calls because that's completely
00:27:10
different remember she was supposed to be staying there the night before Nicole calls the house this is sometime after
00:27:17
lunch on that Friday Nicole had to tell them that she lost Carrie the night before lost track of her
00:27:24
she was devastated when they in return tell her Carrie never came home last night this would be very difficult and
00:27:31
like you said I mean Nicole Kerry's friend has struggled with this heck there's friends of mine that I've gotten
00:27:37
arguments with and just never got over the argument never became close friends again
00:27:43
but this is a whole another level you were with your friend you went to the party with your friend you feel
00:27:52
somehow responsible for her leaving by herself and then like you said she went back and
00:28:00
forth between her house and Doug's house the party looking for her friend and then at some
00:28:06
point has to just come back home and go I I give up and when she doesn't show up
00:28:12
that night and then I'm sure Nicole called some other people first hey did you have you
00:28:17
seen Carrie it'd be devastating to have to call Carrie's family Carrie's brother
00:28:23
Trevor discussed this very situation with the Thompson Citizen newspaper and said when Nicole called looking for
00:28:31
Carrie they meaning his family realize no one knew where Carrie was she made some phone calls and then she called us
00:28:39
back and said Carrie's lost we don't know where Carrie is it was at that point that my parents called the cops
00:28:46
let them know what was going on they came over got a picture of Carrie they created a flyer rather quickly
00:28:54
and he says within a couple of hours they had a bunch of Flyers made and then they all started Distributing them
00:29:02
across the town of Thompson he says I was at home answering the phone talking to people that were
00:29:09
calling once people had started learning that she was missing and that we were looking for her people wanted to help
00:29:15
look for Carrie and so they did lots of people were out looking for her all over
00:29:21
the city but no one found her that day and he goes on to say that we that Kerry's
00:29:28
family the Brown family they didn't sleep that night well you remember these parties when you were a kid and it's
00:29:33
like maybe at maximum capacity there was 30 kids there but throughout the night there could have been 60 70 different
00:29:43
kids that show up like we said they show up in little Groves little packs and then leave at different times
00:29:51
so there's a lot of people that you can question that were there that night there at the
00:29:58
time that Carrie was there and it's it's also hard to remember when people left you so if somebody says
00:30:07
hey I left at 10 o'clock most of the time you just have to believe them because you're not going to remember
00:30:13
every single detail of every single individual that was there at that party well and when the family becomes alarmed
00:30:20
that they don't know where Carrie is this is one thing that I I find to be interesting here they called one of
00:30:29
their phone calls amongst dozens of trying to track down their daughter was to the local taxi company this to see if
00:30:36
Carrie had gotten into a car to you know take a ride to to try to attempt to get
00:30:41
home or go elsewhere this makes sense to do as a parent especially after you're being told the
00:30:47
story from Nicole that hey you know it looked like Carrie decided to split and got tired of waiting around
00:30:55
for me and so this call makes sense however none of the calls that the taxi company
00:31:01
had received from the night before none of them matched up with with where Kerry
00:31:06
would have been uh yeah picking a location of correct location of Doug's party so this didn't seem like uh a
00:31:14
great option that what is interesting though Captain there was a call to another area of town and just to
00:31:22
double check everything Carrie's Father Jim actually drove to the the pickup and
00:31:28
drop-off location of that call and said that he didn't recognize anything one and two didn't have any reason to
00:31:36
connect it back to his daughter well again this is a this is a difficult situation because it's not just the
00:31:42
people that were at the party it's people that drove to the party heck I remember being at some of these
00:31:48
parties in high school where guys would drive up and maybe you'd go out to your buddy's truck and you'd talk for a
00:31:54
little bit and then they would leave they wouldn't even come into the party so there's other individuals
00:32:00
she's 15. uh 17 year old that drives by and goes she's leaving by herself hey Carrie do you need a ride yeah that'd be
00:32:10
awesome maybe she decides oh somebody's going to give me a ride I'll go back to my house
00:32:15
instead of going to Nicole's house but we don't know if she got into a vehicle and if she did who was the driver or who
00:32:26
else was in the vehicle well and so to break things down a little bit here we have the party that took place on
00:32:33
Thursday Carrie's Father Jim reported her missing around 4 P.M central time on Friday October 17th now we're going to
00:32:43
fast forward to the following day on Saturday this is Saturday afternoon around 2 10 p.m we have a woman named
00:32:51
Donna kovic and her friend Joanne they're out on their usual weekend horseback ride
00:32:58
they were making their way along a muddy Road through a wooded area just north of
00:33:04
the Burntwood River their horses at some point started to act skittish and then suddenly the two
00:33:13
women saw a body on the ground this is from a CBC news article by Bryce Hoy it says quote they saw Kerry's body
00:33:23
lying on a jacket with one hand up and one down she was dressed in a pink and black leopard print outfit and white
00:33:33
socks kovic said you could see the face was smashed and beaten she could also tell that the arm
00:33:40
that was up in the air was broken Okay so I want to take a second here to comment
00:33:47
on some things that people familiar with the case are probably asking themselves
00:33:52
right now or thinking and trying to recall there were a lot of rumors and even some
00:33:59
reports that state that Kerry was found nude um that according to the women that
00:34:06
found her Donna and Joanne is not the case it's just simply a rumor it's not true number one in number two
00:34:16
they go on to publicly describe the outfit that she was found in police have been a little
00:34:24
tight-lipped about some of the details of this case but again we get a description of the clothing that they
00:34:30
saw on Carrie that day when they found her I'm assuming that that description is the same clothes that she went to the
00:34:38
party in I don't have any reason to to assume otherwise right Carrie had been beaten to death about the face and head
00:34:46
with branches broken off nearby trees police found the branches with blood on them at the scene
00:34:53
so on Saturday around 3 you know they make this terrible Discovery a little after 2 P.M
00:35:00
the Brown family they'll be notified right around three o'clock uh but this is not by the police it's actually by
00:35:07
two teenagers who knew Trevor they told the family that the cops had found a body out by the horse stables
00:35:16
and at the same time you know this wasn't police dropping the ball here they just hadn't got to the
00:35:22
brown Fam Family yet because as we will see as these two teenagers are telling Trevor
00:35:28
what the rumor is or what they had seen or heard the phone rings and this is the police
00:35:35
asking Jim and his family to come to the hospital because they're going to have to ID a body do you know how far these
00:35:45
horse stables are from Doug's house where the party took place Thursday night yeah from my understanding it's
00:35:51
like a two to three minute walk yeah so that makes it even more difficult because we have these footprints that
00:35:58
Nicole claims she saw that lead to basically tire tracks did somebody pick carry up in a vehicle or
00:36:08
did she walk to this location or was she led to this location well and staying on the the body Discovery here
00:36:17
too this is this is one of those we get this in every story where there's just one of these weird
00:36:23
kind of random heartbreaking moments here and this is when so Trevor remember he knows the two
00:36:31
teenagers that showed up at his house and that are telling him and his family hey the police found a body down by the
00:36:36
horse stables so his dad and mom are going to go to the hospital because they got a call from the police to come and
00:36:43
identify a body well Trevor does not want to wait he he can't he can't help himself he
00:36:51
wants to find his sister he goes with the two teenagers back to the location where they heard a body was found
00:36:59
and the police of course they're still there and they've got everything roped off and they would not let Trevor
00:37:05
into the site obviously so Trevor is talking with one of the ladies that found Kerry's body who was still there
00:37:15
and he's asking her questions he's he said was the person was the body that you found
00:37:22
wearing a penguin's jacket remember she we know that she had a favorite hockey Pittsburgh Penguins jacket that she was
00:37:30
wearing that night when she left the house and arrived at the party Donna one of the women who was on
00:37:37
Horseback that found the body says no there was no penguin's jacket and then Trevor her brother asked Donna was the
00:37:43
the body you found was was the female blonde Donna told Trevor no and so Trevor Carrie's brother goes oh great
00:37:54
thank God it's not her it's not my sister but unfortunately he's wrong because a
00:38:00
couple of things a couple of the details that we get from the women that found the body
00:38:04
Carrie was lying on top of the Penguin's jacket so they did not see the jacket it
00:38:10
was there it was found at the scene but they did not witness the jacket and then
00:38:16
you heard the injuries that we described very briefly there carries blonde hair no longer appeared to be blonde it
00:38:23
appeared to be brownish black because it was saturated with blood so he Trevor goes from this moment of heart just pure
00:38:32
heartbreak to relief of thank God it's not my sister then to a short time later finding out that no it was it was yours
00:38:43
and then you got to think too these these two ladies on Horseback once you see the body how how much are you
00:38:50
looking at that body for detail at that point you go it is a body we need to call law enforcement it's not on them to
00:38:58
have every single detail about this victim no and they're they're answering these questions the best that they can
00:39:04
uh given what they they saw in the brief period of time that they saw it now you
00:39:10
know the family her family went to the hospital as we said her father Jim is the only one that went to the morgue but
00:39:16
later he said he knew even before he went to the hospital that it would be Carrie that that they had found
00:39:25
when Jim viewed the body he said that Kerry had blood coming out of her ears and autopsy would determine
00:39:34
that she had multiple fractures to her skull jaw neck and chest media described her death as due to
00:39:42
massive head injury caused by vicious powerful blows indicative of rage and loss of control
00:39:50
and she had been raped the time of death was believed to be between midnight and
00:39:56
1am this estimate this time of death estimate though comes from the police I've not been able to view the report to
00:40:04
confirm that that's what it says in the the report but this is an item that they
00:40:09
have released to the public if you will the police say that the time of death was between midnight and 1am the with
00:40:15
the amount of vicious blows this is a horrible scene it almost to me leans towards somebody in a complete and
00:40:26
utter rage or possibly multiple attackers yes and like we said in all likelihood
00:40:35
it looks like the murder weapon was found at the scene and it's there's several murder weapons in these branches
00:40:42
that they found that still had blood on them right at the hospital of course the RCMP
00:40:48
Personnel assured the family that they were going to do everything possible to find out who did this to
00:40:55
their daughter to their sister now Trevor keep in mind he's only 16 years old at
00:41:01
the time he's Carrie's older brother just one year older than than Carrie but still to this day Trevor has been the
00:41:09
driving force behind the decades-long push to keep his sister's case in the media
00:41:15
he says that the murder literally destroyed his family he says that his father became withdrawn
00:41:23
and dysfunctional and his mother was depressed until the very end she she eventually died of
00:41:29
cancer but he says she never got through this she died deeply depressed and that would have
00:41:36
been 16 years after Carrie was killed that she she lived in that deep depression oh I think also sometimes
00:41:45
with these cases her mom's grief and her mom's stress might have caused her illness
00:41:54
and I have so much respect for Carrie's brother and Carrie's friend Nicole with the amount of time and effort like
00:42:05
you've said that they try to keep this in the spotlight it's not solved you know spoiler alert it's not solved
00:42:14
and this family wants answers and of course Captain Carey's friends were deeply impacted too
00:42:21
The Citizen Newspaper says uh did an interview with her friend Nicole who says I have relived that night for
00:42:30
30 years it doesn't get easier as they say it just gets different I remember it vividly as the images flashed through my
00:42:38
head at lightning speed I see myself sitting in the basement with her on my lap standing outside and feeling the
00:42:46
snowflakes hitting my face finding her gone minutes later and walking the streets calling her name crying and
00:42:53
wanting desperately to find her in nothing walking the streets putting up posters and going door to door
00:42:59
the next day being dragged home because a body was found hearing the phone ring and my mom saying no and begin to cry so
00:43:08
that's she's kind of flashing through her memories of of that night and the following day her this is
00:43:17
her friend Nicole that we we've talked so much about already well and you also wonder as far as her friends go and her
00:43:23
family goes especially the brother like you said he's 16 but this was a party of
00:43:28
a bunch of high school kids you would think that maybe there'd there'd be somebody talking or some rumors and so
00:43:35
yeah maybe the cops are going to solve this case but maybe there's going to be some rumors and some leads that that he
00:43:44
can follow or or her friend Nicole could follow themselves the general consensus
00:43:50
in the town of Thompson as iterated by the mother of a classmate of carries was was quote that sort of thing happens in
00:43:59
the big cities but not in Thompson the town had its share of crime of course but they were generally of the drunk and
00:44:07
disorderly variety and also Petty crimes like theft burglary and of course they had some drugs and so on but not the
00:44:16
brutal beating death of a quiet 15 year old girl one of my first question is as a law enforcement if I was working with
00:44:23
cases what drugs and alcohol were at this party was it just beer was there some type of booze
00:44:32
was there heavier drugs at the at this party all reports are that they had some beer there and we need to keep in mind
00:44:41
too it's a different time it's a it's a very different location than where we live
00:44:45
there were persons that were 15 to 18 years old so the 18 year olds could legally drink well with such a short and
00:44:54
quick timeline carrying our friend Nicole go to this party with a group of teens they're at the party for a time
00:45:01
period Kerry runs into her ex-boyfriend she feels uncomfortable ask her friend Nicole if they can leave Nicole runs
00:45:09
into her ex talks with him for a little bit seems like Kerry lost her patience and decided to just head out on her own
00:45:18
she leaves the party Nicole her friend can't find her the next day the family report her missing and then the
00:45:26
following Saturday they find her body such a short time period a lot of emotions and a lot of questions
