September 18, 2024 / 01:08:52

This episode covers the mysterious case of Bob Gill, a successful bar owner in Columbus, Ohio, who went missing in September 1994. Key topics include his disappearance, the discovery of his body, and the subsequent investigation involving his business partner, Marty McNamara.

Bob Gill, known for owning popular bars like the Outer Inn and Pockets Sports Bar, was last seen on September 25, 1994. His van was found abandoned 80 miles away, and his body was discovered in a cow pasture, dressed in black clothing and equipped with burglary tools.

Investigators found that Bob had purchased suspicious items, including a hacksaw and bolt cutters, shortly before his disappearance. His death was ruled a homicide, with a single gunshot wound to the head, raising questions about his activities that night.

Marty McNamara, Bob's business partner, faced scrutiny after Bob's death, especially after a series of bizarre events, including Marty's own abduction and the mysterious death of a man connected to him. The investigation revealed Marty's financial troubles and questionable character.

The episode highlights the complexities of the case, including the lack of clear motives and the strange circumstances surrounding both Bob's death and Marty's later troubles.

TLDR

Bob Gill, a bar owner, went missing in 1994; his body was found dressed as a ninja, leading to a complex investigation involving his partner Marty McNamara.

[Music] it takes a whole lot of Moxy to launch an outrageously successful Hospitality
00:03:40
business at the young age of just 23 to thrive right out of the gate with so little experience must truly be a one in
00:03:50
a million success rate is it hard work pure luck or having a vision so compelling that drives people to flock
00:03:59
to your business for Bob Gil it was clearly a magnificent combination of all three but when the 37-year-old owner of
00:04:09
several thriving bars went missing in September of 1994 his friends employees and the
00:04:17
entire Community were baffled when his van was discovered 80 Mi outside of town they held their breath in anticipation
00:04:27
and Dread later Bob B's body was located near where his vehicle was recovered the
00:04:34
popular bar owner was found having been shot in the head his lifeless body was found dressed as what the Press could
00:04:41
only refer to as a ninja he had been discovered wearing a black ski mask and black clothing and a
00:04:50
holstered 9mm semi-automatic weapon strapped to his body sporting a backpack filled with bullets and burglary tools
00:04:59
so how did a respected successful and dynamic business owner wind up dead in a rural pasture dressed as a cat burglar
00:05:09
well that's anyone's guess and this is true crime garage [Music] Robert Manuel Gill grew up one of four
00:05:33
children in Cincinnati Ohio he was the only boy of the bunch and he was extremely close to his father
00:05:40
Manuel After High School Bob would spend a year at the University of Cincinnati afterward he moved about 110 miles up
00:05:51
the highway to attend the Ohio State University it was the early 80s and Columbus Ohio home of OSU some call it
00:06:01
Buckey Nation well it was growing and expanding Bob before he could graduate he saw an opportunity and he seized it
00:06:10
he took out a lease on a bar known as the out or in bar so out letter r and the word in outer in bar the business at
00:06:22
the time before Bob took over was losing money but it was a great location okay so it's ideally situated at the north
00:06:33
campus of OSU and Bob had a vision and the rest is Columbus campus bar history he would
00:06:42
take over this bar and make a lot of money and turned it into a thriving business Bob had zero prior experience
00:06:51
as a proprietor of a drinking establishment he turned the business around with little more than Instinct
00:06:58
hard work and sheer hubris of Youth along the way he sunk every dollar he made back into the business resulting
00:07:07
in the outer end boasting the reputation of being one of the most popular bars on
00:07:13
the OSU campus and it's still a very popular campus bar to this very day the tavern's
00:07:21
name was a nod to the fact the patrons had a choice of either gathering on the large outdoor patio or hanging out on
00:07:29
one of the two expansive interior floors Each of which contained pool tables and
00:07:36
benches today it is your typical campus bar and so most of the patrons during the school year would be students but
00:07:48
where this bar really cleans up making a whole lot of money is on football Saturdays because this bar is packed
00:07:55
from the time they open on a football Saturday until 2: a.m. when they close I've been in there after a football game
00:08:02
you cannot walk there are so many people in there it's standing room only one like you said it's a great location cuz
00:08:09
it's right off the main drag it's right off High Street my guess we're not old enough to know because Bob took over
00:08:18
this bar in the early 80s well speak for yourself I'm 97 and a half years old then you might know but my guess is that
00:08:25
it must have been like a real dump before he took it over because given that and with the number of students there I
00:08:33
don't see how you could not draw a crowd just given the location a decade later looking to expand his business Bob took
00:08:41
over a tired Northwest Side Restaurant this was called The Lone Star Stakes located on Kenny Road this time Bob's
00:08:50
Vision involved converting the very outdated restaurant into a slick new looking Sports Bar naming his newest
00:09:00
Venture Pockets Sports Bar and Grill Bob installed a dazzling assortment of diversions we've got widescreen TVs a
00:09:11
lot of video games pool tables air hockey tables dart boards this all resulting in a sports lovers and gaming
00:09:20
Utopia it was quite the novel idea at the time I mean this was well before Dave and Busters and keep in mind this
00:09:28
is an adult only establishment and when you go in it feels like a bit of an adult playground
00:09:36
so this gave and cater to the local clientele looking for more than just a place to eat drink and congregate in the
00:09:45
years that followed countless rival establishments copied this Vision Bob's Vision in an attempt to emulate his
00:09:53
success but Bob always managed to stay a step ahead of his competitors he advertised on the radio and TV and
00:10:02
upgrading his equipment and hiring very talented staff at around the time Pockets was starting to become lucrative
00:10:10
Bob decided to take on a business partner he met a man named Martin J mcnam while they were playing softball
00:10:18
so he meets this guy who goes by Marty in the early 1990s and the two hit it off right away Captain even engaging in
00:10:26
some business dealings together this ultimately grew into a full-blown partnership with Marty mcnam buying into
00:10:35
both bars right so he buys into both the outer in bar and Pockets with equally shared ownership location I think is
00:10:45
going to be key here because we're going to have some very questionable events that are going to take place in this
00:10:50
case just so people can kind of paint a road map in their minds while we go through each of these items we should
00:11:00
note here that the outer in bar the first bar that he purchases I believe it was 1981 that he purchased the outer in
00:11:09
the outer in is located at 20 East frams Avenue in Columbus Ohio this is the north campus area of Ohio State under
00:11:17
Bob's ownership it becomes one of the most popular bars in the campus area then 10 years later so in 1991 he that's
00:11:25
when he purchases the Lone Star Stak restaurant turning it into the very popular Pocket Sports Bar and Grill
00:11:31
Pocket Sports Bar is located on Kenny Road this is Kenny Road near the Henderson Road intersection so this is
00:11:38
on the city's Northwest side the Northwest side of Columbus so it's sometime around 1990
00:11:46
when Marty mamy moves to Columbus and then eventually buying in with Bob the pair continue to jointly operate
00:11:55
both wildly successful businesses which generate a subst anal income for both the partnership flourishes until Bob
00:12:03
inexplicably goes missing but this is in 1994 when he goes missing and before Bob
00:12:09
goes missing there's some potentially key events that take place in Bob's world the first takes place in January
00:12:16
of 1994 in 1994 there's going to be a lawsuit filed against Bob yes this takes place in January of 1994 the pl if is
00:12:26
Mary Victoria haran so she files a sexual harassment lawsuit against Robert M Gill or Bob
00:12:37
Gill he is her employer so he's the owner of these two bars right heran was 28 at the time originally she's hired as
00:12:47
a waitress at Pocket Sports Bar but later she's promoted and moves up to working at the corporate
00:12:57
office as like a secretary performing clerical duties in her lawsuit she claims that
00:13:05
the harassment began when she moved to corporate from the restaurant claiming that Bob Gil made continual unwanted and
00:13:13
uninvited sexual suggestions towards her now I don't know exactly what went down
00:13:19
but this seems like a large sum of money here she was seeking $15 million in Damages wow haran's attorneys maintain
00:13:28
that their client suffered daily harassment and inquiries into her sexual proclivities performance and partners
00:13:36
from Bob now the business owner Bob emphatically denied these allegations in fact he was claiming that
00:13:46
heran was the instigator of any sexual conversations that the two may have had together so we have a he said she said
00:13:56
situation here $15 million and damages is what she was seeking I know Bob Gil is a successful businessman but I don't
00:14:07
believe he's even worth $15 million no no and I think in these types of situations my guess here Captain is
00:14:16
that an attorney would tell you really overshoot your shot and hope that they talk you down a lot of times people are
00:14:26
looking more for a settlement out of court and I don't know how this was playing out behind the scenes but Bob's
00:14:34
going to go missing before it could play out in the courts the other event that we should note here too is that in June
00:14:43
of 1994 Bob's second marriage is analed now typically we are saying the day in question in the garage when we are
00:14:52
discussing these cases but today we are going to say the year in question because as we go through this
00:15:00
timeline here I think everybody will agree that what we're going to see is a lot of questionable Behavior movements
00:15:09
and again locations that's why I wanted to note where the businesses were located for people unfamiliar with this
00:15:17
case so a lot going on in Bob Gill's life he has a a marriage that is analed he has this lawsuit coming up and we
00:15:26
have some varying reports and it's probably because of the time of day but it's reported September 25th some people
00:15:34
report 20 September 26 is the last time that they see Bob Gill yes varying reports Bob goes missing either on the
00:15:44
25th or 26th of September 1994 depending on which source you're you're picking up
00:15:49
your information from but like the captain said I think that makes sense because the way that it seems to play
00:15:55
out is either Bob's last scene shortly before midnight on the 25th or shortly after midnight on the
00:16:04
26th so what we're going to do is we're going to give you the beautiful listeners here all of the information
00:16:12
and let you sift through it and sort it out the main narrative that we have here
00:16:18
Captain is that Bob vanishes around 1:00 a.m. on September 26 1994 now some sources report that he had
00:16:27
spent the evening of the 25th at Marty mamy's house which is located in Westerville so this is his business
00:16:36
partner this is his business partner and according to this report he is spending
00:16:41
the evening of the 25th at Marty's house in Westerville before leaving to go to his girlfriend's house in the early amm
00:16:50
hours another source indicates that according to Columbus Police Marty mcnam last Saw Gil Bob Gill
00:16:59
after Bob left Pockets late on the 25th so in this report it's like shortly after 11:00 p.m. I believe from
00:17:09
there the report says that Bob went to the Meyer store on Cleveland Avenue now for those that are unfamiliar Meyer is a
00:17:19
Walmart type of store where you can get groceries some locations you can buy tires for your car you can buy Hardware
00:17:27
you can buy supplies you can buy pretty much everything there it's it's a large box store that contains uh a large
00:17:36
produce and grocery section there are several of these large box stores scattered throughout the Greater
00:17:43
Columbus area but back then and I'm going off a memory here Captain but remember when we were just we little
00:17:52
Lads there was what probably two or three of these Meer locations in in the entirety of the Greater Columbus area
00:18:02
yeah I'm not a Meer of Fishin so I'm not really for sure but every time I hear Cleveland Avenue I
00:18:09
just think that might not be the greatest location so this location would have been the Meyer located near the
00:18:18
intersection of Cleveland Avenue in 161 according to police Bob is there to purchase some
00:18:26
very interesting items especially interesting for some late night shopping right so Bob purchased a hacksaw bolt
00:18:35
cutters pliers rope and a flashlight that sounds like he's purchasing a kill kit if this is around
00:18:44
midnight can you imagine the cashier looking at Bob going through the line with these items in his cart a hackel
00:18:53
bolt cutters pliers rope and a flashlight Bob purchased all these items separately
00:18:59
but he could have bought them all packaged together in the Israel Keys Meyers kill kit one thing I think maybe
00:19:07
we should note here too is at that hour of the day even today but especially then if somebody were looking to
00:19:13
purchase these particular items I'm thinking Meyer would be the only location that you could purchase
00:19:20
these items at that hour of the day yeah so it's reported that Bob so let's note
00:19:25
here he's 37 years old at the time but it's reported that he was last seen wearing a white pullover shirt and dark
00:19:34
shorts on the same day that Bob goes missing Bob is profiled in a feature article in business first this is like a
00:19:42
local magazine I think a lot of the bigger cities had them back then I believe it's one of those magazines or
00:19:49
small newspapers that you can pick up for free they're just you know handouts at the grocery store or the market yeah
00:19:56
but the article is featuring interviews with several successful bar owners in the Columbus Ohio area in the piece in
00:20:03
this piece Bob outlines his tireless approach to owning and operating several lucrative drinking and eating
00:20:11
entertainment establishments in Columbus he attributes his success to keeping things in
00:20:17
perspective remarking that running a bar requires having a level head and as said
00:20:22
ironically ironically the article is released the same day that Bob goes missing first looking into this story I
00:20:32
I think one piece of his success is how much he reinvest into the business so I could see that playing or creating some
00:20:42
kind of irritation towards other owners of the business going well why are we reinvesting so much money I would like
00:20:51
to get a profit back one thing that is unique about this case among some others that we're going to de into here in a
00:20:59
little bit but this case is bizarre yeah so he's last seen either very late on the 25th or very early on the 26th he's
00:21:09
not reported missing until September 29th okay so we got about 3 days that go by before he is reported missing and
00:21:19
although Bob lives and works in Columbus Ohio his 1993 Ford astrovan is found abandoned in ryal gery County this is is
00:21:28
in the eastern portion of the state of Ohio I don't even know where that is at well so you know where Cambridge is it's
00:21:39
kind of near Cambridge so if if one were in Columbus Ohio and wanted to go to the
00:21:44
state of West Virginia uhhuh you would hop on 70 and this would be heading East on
00:21:53
Interstate 70 and on your way to West Virginia is the best way to describe it and you're right it's I did not know
00:22:02
there's 88 counties in the state of Ohio so I don't expect you or myself to know
00:22:07
all 88 of them but I had never heard of gery County so it's roughly how far from
00:22:12
Columbus um this is about 80 miles away from where he was last seen again last seen location dve is that that Meer
00:22:24
location so much more to get to this case is going to get very bizarre very [Music]

cheers to you captain and here's a cheers to we want to give a cheers to our friends at the Columbus Metropolitan
00:27:14
Library in particular a wonderful lady over there her name is Michelle who graciously provided us access to a lot
00:27:23
of articles that we could not get that weren't available online so she was super helpful and truly without her help
00:27:32
there would be no garage case file on this case so shout out to Michelle and all the good people at the Columbus
00:27:40
Metropolitan Library like the captain said tall cans in the air where we left off we have his vehicle Bob Bob is
00:27:49
missing his vehicle is disc discovered about 80 miles away from where he's last seen so the way that this is reported
00:27:59
initially is that the vehicle was found a few days after Bob was last seen and this is a little convoluted because
00:28:07
that's actually not the case so to go through it all here Bob lives and works in Columbus his 1993 Ford Astro van is
00:28:16
found abandoned in this gery County in eastern Ohio the van is found parked on a Road near the bville asphalt plant so
00:28:25
this is Route 35 this is 5 miles south of Cambridge officials confirm that there
00:28:34
is gas in the tank so he didn't he didn't run out of gas and abandoned the vehicle the keys were somebody else
00:28:41
didn't yeah and the keys are still in the ignition when the vehicle's found deputies found a 9mm shell on the floor
00:28:49
of the vehicle and we're going to circle back to that in just a second here while
00:28:54
the media reports that the van is found on September 28th it's actually discovered probably about 4 or 5 hours
00:29:01
after Bob was last seen in Columbus Ohio this is according to family members of Bobs the empty vehicle had been observed
00:29:09
by the Ohio State Highway Patrol found near bville Ohio so the vehicle this doesn't raise any suspicion because
00:29:17
remember he's not reported missing at this time so they find the vehicle but it's not until a couple days later that
00:29:23
he's actually reported missing by Family his sister Tina penter contends that Bob
00:29:31
has no Associates in Cambridge or bville and that he had no reason to be there well this doesn't make a lot of sense to
00:29:38
me either because you'd think and maybe because he had so much going on in his life that if he wasn't seen at one
00:29:45
location or one business that he had that maybe they just assumed he's at another location but it seems a little
00:29:52
strange to me that it takes so many days for him to be reported missing you know
00:29:56
he I'm guessing he would would been noticeable that he's not at either business in the coming days but as said
00:30:03
there was a corporate office he did have an office that was away from the businesses the bars so maybe he people
00:30:11
just thought that he was there and nobody knew that he was missing for a couple of days right now a couple days
00:30:18
after he's reported missing Bob's body is discovered in a cow pasture by a farmer and the farmer's wife this is in
00:30:26
bville so now we're at October 1st so a quick rundown refresher here he goes missing he's last seen either on the
00:30:34
25th or 26th of September the vehicle is actually found about 5 hours after he's
00:30:39
last seen but it's reported that it was found on the 28th he's reported missing on the 28th or 29th and that's when they
00:30:49
piece together oh this missing guy we found his abandoned van and now it's a couple days after that that his body is
00:30:56
located they're not out searching for his body or for Bob this is just a farmer and his wife who are out on their
00:31:03
property that find Bob on October 1st Bob was killed by a single gunshot wound to the Head his blood soaked body is
00:31:12
found less than a mile from where his abandoned van had been discovered again this is gery County Ohio roughly 80
00:31:20
miles from where Bob lived and worked well give me a second so just I'm trying to wrap my head around all this
00:31:28
so we have we have a a successful businessman from Columbus Ohio he owns multiple businesses mainly bars eateries
00:31:37
that type of thing he has a piece in a magazine come out about how successful he
00:31:45
is he goes to visit his business partner leaves pretty late in the morning goes to
00:31:54
Meyer buys some very suspicious items we can possibly assume that he drove his van out by himself or maybe
00:32:04
with somebody else we don't know mhm about 80 mil away from Columbus then his body is
00:32:11
found within a couple miles of the vehicle dead this is bizarre less than a mile from his vehicle and this location
00:32:20
too interestingly enough we're assuming Bob got there on foot but the the property owners say that they use an
00:32:29
allterrain vehicle to navigate getting out to this location the distance between where the van is parked on along
00:32:36
Route 35 in the location of Bob's body it you know you have to pass through a Brier patch woods and even a creek and
00:32:46
what's the damage to the body single gunshot wound to the Head strangely Bob is dressed as what is often referred to
00:32:55
by the media as a ninja so he's found clad in Black clothing he's wearing a ski mask black pants black sweater and
00:33:06
black or brown gloves Bob Gil was carrying a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun in a
00:33:15
holster he's carrying a napsack or backpack that is found on his person inside this pack we get we have
00:33:26
bullet shells and what typically would be described as burglary tools right we have that
00:33:32
hacksaw that he purchased the P pliers also found was a screwdriver bolt cutters rope and tape
00:33:40
so bizarre do we have any evidence that would tell us whether or not he inflicted this wound on himself
00:33:50
or that's that's exactly where we're going with this so the detectives what they're going to tell us a detective
00:33:56
from gy County Sheriff office tells the media that there had been no burglaries in the area at the time of the incident
00:34:05
and I think they had to say that based off of what he's found with yeah and the gurny county sheriff's office would
00:34:12
later tell the media that they did not think that the gun found on Bob's body was the murder weapon here's what's
00:34:21
difficult though we find him so we can assume that he's the victim but because of the items found on him and because of
00:34:29
his clothing he looks like the perpetrator of a crime he looks like he's going out to Rob burglarize or
00:34:39
potentially kill somebody yes so that that's what they tell the the media initially right that we don't believe
00:34:45
that the gun found on him was the murder weapon because this firearm had not been
00:34:50
discharged recently they also find a shell casing this is found near his body but this shell casing is later
00:34:58
determined not to match the 9mm weapon that found a shell casing in his van so does that match and then my other
00:35:08
question is do we have any evidence that there was a crime committed inside his van none that's been reported right one
00:35:15
question that comes up immediately in this case for many people R viewing the information is was he killed where he
00:35:24
was found or was he killed elsewhere and dumped at this location well we know based off
00:35:30
of the pool of blood that is at this location and the single gunshot that he was killed where he was found so he had
00:35:38
been shot once in the cheek about an inch below his right eye and the bullet that killed him was never recovered we
00:35:46
get we get the shell but not the actual bullet there's no signs of a violent struggle other than that that pull of
00:35:53
blood and the shot to the the head again it makes you wonder is there a possibility that Bob was out there to
00:36:01
commit a crime with another individual or multiple individuals but that was all a ruse to get him out there by himself I
00:36:09
mean this is just strange well yeah and it would appear I'm guessing here Captain I can't prove it 100% but it
00:36:17
would St a reason that he it look it's difficult to dress a dead body so he likely was in that get up before he was
00:36:26
killed at that location and all of those weird items that's found in his backpack are items
00:36:34
that we know he purchased from the Meyer store so what the hell was he up to and
00:36:40
then the other thing too is even though he's been missing now for several days investigators tell us that they
00:36:47
believe that he was he died within hours of the last time that he was seen yeah so many questions here if I'm law
00:36:54
enforcement I'm going first of all why why is he dressed this way why does he have these items but also why is he
00:37:04
in this location mhm cuz I mean look if I'm law enforcement and you find Bob a couple blocks from his one of his
00:37:13
businesses well at least I know why he was there that's that's the area that he frequents this is 80 miles away and then
00:37:25
then my question is where is he going in this field like I mean no seriously like is
00:37:31
there a mansion uh within a quarter mile is there is there some location that would have something of uh of value
00:37:44
MH well and like you had said earlier when I had mentioned the gas you said well you know I said he didn't run out
00:37:51
of gas and leave his vehicle there and you said well and neither did anybody else so what you have to wonder here is
00:37:58
yeah he has a gun on him when he's found dead right the gun's found holstered on
00:38:02
his person right is he right is somebody in the vehicle with him one or two other
00:38:08
persons who knows is he marched out to this area yeah and then shot and then they put the gun on him now he was a gun
00:38:16
enthusiast he owned several guns I've not got a clear confirmation that that gun that was found on him that he that
00:38:25
he owned it but they've never said that anybody else did either and I'm glad that you're circling around on location
00:38:32
here of where he is found because to me that was equally puzzling like as much as as his weird outfit that again the
00:38:41
newspapers described him dressed as a ninja or some kind of cat burglar that the location of where he is
00:38:50
found just like the captain said is nowhere near any of his businesses but more importantly to me the Meer that he
00:38:57
went to late that night to purchase these items and Meyer the all of the Meer stores that I have been in have
00:39:07
security cameras and a good deal of them and even though this is 1994 I'm still guessing that they that's
00:39:15
how they piece together because we do we get a statement that says he's last seen
00:39:19
wearing a white shirt and shorts and we know that when he's found dead he's wearing all black so Ninja
00:39:28
I'm guessing here that that information is coming from police finding footage because the the statement is that he
00:39:36
purchased these items so either he used a credit card and they can confirm that his credit card paid for these items or
00:39:42
they have him on camera and they can physically see him going through the line and paying for and purchasing these
00:39:49
items so the Meer is nowhere near his home the Meer is nowhere near either of his businesses yeah but see the Meer to
00:39:57
me seems because I know the location not that hard to then jump on 70 from that location that's what I was going to say
00:40:06
so if you were if one were to get in their vehicle like let's say Bob gets into his vehicle he lives north of 270
00:40:14
North of the Worthington area that's not going to mean anything to people that live outside of Ohio but if he were to
00:40:21
just drive a a short Drive South and like the captain said hop on 27 he could have got to that Meer fairly quickly
00:40:30
hopped back on 270 and got over to 70 Interstate 70 and taken that out to near where his body was found and here's the
00:40:39
big problem with the location for me is we don't know if this was the final destination of where he was going yeah
00:40:50
because like I said you can then go well we know where the body was found so let's do a 10mi radius within that 10 m
00:40:58
radius is there any house or any reason for somebody to want to break in to some place right
00:41:09
well and like his family says they're they are saying he doesn't know anybody in this
00:41:16
area to their knowledge and but here's my other question though we have this divorce and then we have this lawsuit
00:41:24
and so then my other question would be is there any anybody involved in his life that is connected to somebody in
00:41:33
this area because I could see somebody snapping and going you you're trying to sue me
00:41:42
well I'm going to have something done to your family and then maybe that will stop all
00:41:48
this nonsense the thing here though I do want to point out and again the this Meer location and the choice of picking
00:41:56
this Meer for him to go to may have little to do with nothing but this Meer location is not far from where his
00:42:05
business partner Marty lives now again if one were wanting to purchase these items at that hour of
00:42:12
night that time of day you likely the only place would be a Meer and that would be the even though
00:42:20
this Meer is close to Marty's house it would be the closest Meer to where lives as well don't you find it
00:42:29
weird though because of the time of day that these items become more suspicious you know like if if a guy was
00:42:38
purchasing these on a on a noon on Saturday if if you're the cashier noon on Saturday a guy purchases these items
00:42:48
maybe not that big of a deal you might not even remember it but somebody purchases these items at 2 3 in the
00:42:56
morning you go well this guy's up to no good yeah yeah you're ex I mean these are all standard
00:43:02
items that that many people would have in their garage or at work at a Mt in a maintenance closet somewhere but um yeah
00:43:11
somebody going through the line at midnight buying these items seems very strange but if I'm law enforcement I
00:43:17
want to know what what the what was the conversation with my business partner yeah because to
00:43:23
me and we we will never know this possibly is whatever Bob Gil was planning when when did he I mean the
00:43:36
plan could have happened two weeks ago but now it's it's go time it's time to execute that plan or was this way more
00:43:44
sporadic hang on because it's going to get even more bizarre okay so more bizarre than ninjas yeah now what is not
00:43:52
bizarre is that it we learned that Bob Gil had a life insurance policy valued at about
00:44:00
$600,000 there are two beneficiaries for this policy one is Bob's father and the
00:44:07
other is his business partner Marty Bob's father also inherits his son's stake in the
00:44:15
businesses so he is possibly worth millions of dollars to his father yeah so a little less than a year
00:44:25
after Bob Gill's murder Marty buys out Bob's father so now Marty becomes the loan owner of both of the
00:44:34
bars he purchases Bob's father's share in the businesses for $700,000 seems like a pretty good deal
00:44:43
now we're going to go to about 11 months after Bob's murder and we're going to get some very strange events in August
00:44:50
of 1995 Marty mamy who still owns both of those bars and by this point he owns a
00:44:58
third bar uh called Shooters which is out east and it's East in the Greater Columbus Ohio area he's 29 at the time
00:45:08
he leaves the outer end bar in the early morning hours of August 18th 1995 he is accompanied by a regular
00:45:17
customer who he offered a ride to and it is said that Marty had given this person
00:45:25
a ride multiple times this wasn't the first time that he had offered a ride to this customer that came into the bar now
00:45:32
on their way to wherever they're going they spot a person walking or potentially
00:45:40
hitchhiking who is an acquaintance of the person that's riding with Marty that's strange so they pick him up
00:45:50
right mhm on the drive Marty says that the hitchhiker that they had recently picked
00:45:57
up pulls out a gun and Marty mcname says that he forced him to drive to his residence where the the two people that
00:46:09
he's giving the right to the regular customer and this random person that they picked up who pulled the gun on him
00:46:15
they douse him Marty with gasoline and they rob him of about $5,000 cash Jesus mnam tells author that one of
00:46:28
his abductors then took him to a location north of Columbus so now he's up in Delaware County this is near Ohio
00:46:35
750 and Interstate 71 he says that they that the one guy tied him to a tree okay but hold on a
00:46:43
second I'm just wrapping my head around this yeah Marty's business partner is dead Marty buys out his father yes so
00:46:53
now he has three businesses he is now going to give a r ride to a known customer they come across a hitchhiker
00:47:02
that hitchhiker is connected to that known customer so obviously this is some kind of
00:47:09
ruse hey you're going to take me back home oh there's this hitchhiker we pick him up and now we have this robbery in
00:47:17
place well I do want to point out something that I think is very key to this very interesting story that we're
00:47:25
hearing right about Marty being abducted robbed DED in gasoline and tied to a tree all the way up in Delaware County
00:47:34
Columbus is in Franklin County so he's north of Columbus we hear this story we only have
00:47:42
Marty telling us the story right I want to point that out because I think that that is a big is of great significance
00:47:50
in this story so the the man he gave a ride to the regular customer we know who that is his name is Monroe liot the
00:47:57
person that they pick up The Hitchhiker or the person that is seen walking Marty says he doesn't know that
00:48:04
person's name other than Monroe told him that that guy hey that's Carl we should
00:48:11
that's my buddy Carl we should pick him up yeah so they pick up Carl and according to Marty's story Monroe and
00:48:16
Carl then Rob him Carl pulls the gun it's unclear by Marty's account if Monroe is willingly assisting Carl in
00:48:27
this robbery or if he's like forced into it because as The Story Goes Carl's the
00:48:32
only one with a gun so Carl's probably in charge if this in fact went down the way that Marty says that it went down
00:48:39
right remember where we left off Marty is in another County tied to a tree in the middle of the night he maintains and
00:48:47
claims that he eventually was able to free himself from being tied from the tree this is around 8:00 am in the
00:48:54
morning now he's walking along a road where he's trying to flag down passing cars and a car eventually pulls over and
00:49:04
picks him up I believe there's two people in this vehicle they drive him to St an's hospital and he's treated for
00:49:12
some very minor injuries that he that he has right I I do want to point out he some of the it is noted in the injuries
00:49:21
that he had several insect bites so maybe that is some proof that he might have been tied to a
00:49:28
tree out in the country area my question to the eyewitnesses was did he smell like
00:49:35
gasoline CU we could prove that part of the story too yeah yeah so they did find
00:49:42
gasoline on I think it was on his boots or shoes uh but yeah you're right as far as
00:49:50
the rest of him goes I I didn't see well let's continue on because it what we have here ha happened remember he knows
00:49:58
one of the guys right that was in the car so after he tells this story to police at the hospital the police
00:50:05
announced that Monroe liot one of those guys is charged with aggravated robbery and kidnapping liot is 31 years old at
00:50:13
the time he's described as a African-American male and a transient individual who often stayed near the
00:50:21
north campus area of Ohio State University and again the second man the other man is only known as Carl
00:50:29
to to Marty he provides a description of Carl to police and they put together a composite sketch which is released to
00:50:39
the public they're trying to identify who this Carl guy is 11 days after mnam is found walking along the road saying
00:50:48
he's been tied to a tree and kidnapped Westerville and Columbus Police discover a burned body in the
00:50:57
basement of Marty's home Jesus Christ right so when he gets out of the hospital what's already known at this part that
00:51:04
we didn't include yet in the story is Marty's home was burned to the ground according to his story he knew
00:51:11
that they DED him and portions of his home in gasoline but he didn't know that they actually
00:51:18
set it on fire remember according to his story only Carl is the one that takes him out to the middle of nowhere and
00:51:25
ties him to a tree right at gunpoint the the house is so badly burnt down that police were like sifting
00:51:34
through the rubble for 11 days before they find this burned body in the basement of Marty's
00:51:42
home initially they have no idea who the the burned dead person is and part of this too like they couldn't get to the
00:51:50
basement location for a while because after the home had been burnt down it wasn't structurally safe portions of the
00:51:57
home for people to be in there so it required like a construction crew to come in with heavy machinery to start
00:52:03
pulling this house apart basically but the charred body is later identified of being that of Monroe liot the homeless
00:52:13
transient person who was a regular at the outer end bar who Marty claims he gave a ride
00:52:21
to and that Monroe knew this Carl guy that they also picked up he's identified using dental records so as The Story
00:52:29
Goes so far you go well we have these two individuals we don't know if they're in
00:52:36
cahoots but now that we find one of their bodies you start going well they're not in
00:52:40
cahoots and now we got to find this Carl guy because he it seems like he's responsible
00:52:47
for the he's responsible for robbing Marty putting him out in the woods mhm leaving him possibly for death and then
00:52:59
also Burning Down The House with his body inside but it makes you wonder well why wouldn't he just leave Marty's body
00:53:06
in the house with the other guy exactly well and well here's the thing the initial thought amongst police and even
00:53:15
like people in the neighborhood and people paying attention to this case at the time was that Monroe liot maybe he
00:53:24
accidentally killed himself while he was setting the house on fire right right to
00:53:30
to we're covering up some crimes here that took place we robbed this guy took roughly $5,000 cash from him according
00:53:38
to Marty Carl takes Marty out into the middle of nowhere and Monro must have been dousing the house with gasoline
00:53:45
sets it on fire and somehow maybe got trapped inside and couldn't get out that was the that's what everybody thought in
00:53:52
the beginning yeah after a while so we get the Franklin County coroner who eventually doing an autopsy on this
00:54:03
charred body figures out that well this guy didn't die because of the fire he died from a stab wound it goes from
00:54:12
being an accidental death to now this is a homicide right it's all very I mean it's all very strange and and to this
00:54:20
day Carl has never been identified Monroe liot his murder being stabbed to death that murder has never been solved
00:54:33
but there's so many questions if you're law enforcement the first question is does Carl even
00:54:40
exist right because this could just be a ruse of well I gave this guy a ride home there's
00:54:49
a reason why I wanted him dead so I kill them I kill him at my house I then set my place a blaze that will
00:55:01
cover up the murder possibly get me some insurance money and then but then I guess the question is
00:55:09
then how does Marty then get out into Delaware County that's a really good question he would have to have somebody
00:55:16
else involved with him in order to do so or the other question is do you believe
00:55:23
Marty's story yeah I'm I'm glad you brought that up because I before we get to Marty's story his vehicle right we
00:55:30
want to know the situation with his vehicle where was his vehicle found was it found back at his home because
00:55:36
according to Marty's story there's three people in only one vehicle how did Marty
00:55:41
get to where he's eventually found either somebody had to give him a ride or he was able to ditch a vehicle
00:55:47
somewhere and that's never been detected right this guy Carl drove him out to Delaware
00:55:57
he most likely didn't drive back to Marty's house they would have found the vehicle abandoned somewhere else the
00:56:05
look I'm not saying that Marty is lying about the story but keep in mind nobody sees Marty tied to a tree he's not found
00:56:13
tied and bound he's found walking alongside the road saying that he was eventually able to free himself a few
00:56:21
hours or several hours after he was brought to that location by air quotes Carl now let me what we do know is like
00:56:30
the captain said his business partner has been murdered about a year 10 11 months prior and Marty did gain from the
00:56:41
death of his business partner he he was one of the beneficiaries and right so he had to be a suspect in
00:56:48
the murder and depending on which source you go to he may have been the last person to see Bob Gill alive before Bob
00:56:56
went to the Meer store which is oh by the way not far from Marty's home here let me again this is complete
00:57:06
speculation okay I'm here for it but here's the problem what if Marty had some kind of hand in
00:57:25
whatever happened to Bob however that played out with the Bob's murder right the problem with people
00:57:33
with money if you don't do something yourself you hire somebody to do it the problem
00:57:41
with people with money is if you hire someone to do it well now they got something on you and you still got money
00:57:50
so if you look at Marty's story but you got to look at this whole story as a complete story you go well Marty had
00:57:55
this connection to this Transit Life Style guy Monroe and so you could start then
00:58:05
laying out a story that well maybe Marty paid this guy to get rid of his business partner and then
00:58:16
eventually turned on you and said you know you you gave me some money but now I need more money or I need whatever and
00:58:26
so then you decided to get rid of him yeah because here's the thing so if he paid Monroe to do something to Bob or
00:58:35
paid Monroe to help him do something now Monroe can keep going back to the well time and time again to this
00:58:44
guy that's clearly got a lot more money than he has and say look remember this thing we did or remember that thing I
00:58:49
did for you I could ratch you out I could tell some people or you could give me this and I could stay quiet does that
00:58:57
happen multiple times and eventually Marty gets tired of paying up or decides that you know I I can get rid of this
00:59:04
guy and now my my new problem goes away but I have to create this Carl guy that's never been located and found
00:59:14
because he can't the story can't just involve Marty and Monroe right because Monroe's found dead in Marty's basement
00:59:21
and what elaborate story it is again you have to then question is it true could be true or is it just
00:59:31
is it completely fabricated and a lot of people hone in on the lawsuit and say well this probably has something to do
00:59:40
with Bob Gill's murder but I then I say this you can't squeeze blood from a rusty nail right
00:59:46
you this Bob Gil who's being sued for $15 million again we don't know if the plaintiff is hoping to settle at a court
00:59:55
for a large amount of money or or what she was hoping would happen but she's not getting any money if Bob is killed
01:00:04
if Bob's dead she's getting nothing the person she's suing I I guess maybe in some way she could turn around and sue
01:00:10
sue the business but you know I don't want to get into the the muck and the Meer of the the legal you know lawsuit
01:00:18
system here but am I wrong for thinking that if you're law enforcement and you can figure out what happened and Bob
01:00:24
Gill's murder that you're more likely to figure out if this story that Marty is telling you
01:00:30
whether that's true or not well because the thing that still doesn't make any sense to me is why is
01:00:38
he why is Bob dressed up like cat burglar and again I don't think I don't think somebody dressed him
01:00:46
up like that afterward to try to make this situation confusing I think he dressed himself that way but but was he
01:00:55
forced to do so but why I mean he could have been forced to do so he could have been marched out to where the location
01:01:01
where his body was found now Marty is not clean in any of this so Marty eventually will go on to be indicted for
01:01:10
tax and mail fraud as well as conspiracy and conspiracy and money laundering he is sentenced to serve 36 months for
01:01:21
defrauding the IRS he pled guilty he admitted to skimming receipts from the bars filing false tax returns and
01:01:29
destroying records and receipts he also admits to purposely flooding his home to
01:01:35
collect insurance money this obviously a different home than the one that was burnt To The Ground
01:01:41
by Carl and Monroe so he serves time in prison and he is ordered to pay over $500,000 in restitutions the thing too
01:01:52
that I want to point out yes there's this lawsuit and maybe her claims are real maybe she was a victim we don't
01:01:59
know we can't say but what what I want to make sure that we include in our reporting of Bob Gill's murder is that
01:02:07
the employees that worked for Bob that were interviewed had nothing but really great
01:02:14
things to say about this guy like and none of them could come up with any reason why he would be dressed like that
01:02:20
none of them had any idea why he would be in that location his family says he had no Reon to be there his business
01:02:26
partner Marty says he had no reason to be there and all the people that worked for him were according to police were
01:02:34
were shocked and numb because they none of them could fathom who would want to hurt their boss who was yes he's
01:02:45
successful but he was also a nice fun guy you were talking about surveillance I'd want to know if there's some
01:02:53
surveillance in the parking lot and to see if there's any movement in Bob's van because again you're hanging out with
01:03:03
your business partner your business partner if he created this fake story later he is just creating
01:03:11
confusion so now we're I'm sitting down with my business partner I have this plan to get rid of him I go in the van
01:03:18
with him I tell him what to buy I mean you you obviously have the possibility that Bob does go
01:03:26
along with the plan if you don't go in with him yeah and we have a bunch of different investigating agencies here
01:03:32
obviously because we have gery County Sheriff's Office who were notified when the body was found we have the Ohio
01:03:40
State Patrol who found Bob's van less than a mile from where his body's found a few days later we have Westerville
01:03:48
Police Department involved because that's where Marty lived and they had to bring in Columbus
01:03:55
Personnel to go through and sift through the home who eventually find the burned
01:04:00
body in the basement of Monroe liot who was also murdered and you have Columbus Police Department that's been involved
01:04:08
um working in tandem with Westerville and the gery County Sheriff's Office and both of the
01:04:15
homicides um Marty eventually gets out of prison and he last time I tracked him he
01:04:23
was living down in Florida Bob Gil good guy doesn't make any sense that he would
01:04:29
be dressed like this found in the middle of nowhere dead but the other individual
01:04:36
Marty seems to have a very flawed character it's just it's one of the most bizarre cases I think we've looked at
01:04:45
well and this case has kind of become folklore here in central Ohio right like just very much like Brian Schaefer's
01:04:53
case where you talk to people around town and somebody will say whatever happened to that guy that went into the
01:05:02
bar and disappeared right it it's folklore at this point people forget the name Brian Schaefer in town people but
01:05:09
but what they don't forget that has remained is this story of the guy that went into a bar and then disappeared he
01:05:15
never came out what happened to him well same as with Bob Gil I've had plenty of
01:05:21
people suggest this case but no victim name Ed so it took us a while to get here with
01:05:30
part of that because I've had like three people over the years go hey why don't you cover the uh you know that guy that
01:05:36
was found dressed like a ninja out in the middle of nowhere that's the folklore of this story well think about
01:05:42
the thousands of people that visit that bar weekly but like you said during Ohio
01:05:48
State games that bar is packed that area is packed how many people go into that bar and go hey you know the guy that
01:05:55
used to own this was murdered found dressed as a ninja in a field that the outer in and the Varsity Club got to be
01:06:05
the two most popular bars to attend before during and after an OSU football game still to this very day I mean you
01:06:14
cannot even park near the place because it's so it's so packed and the people spill out into the
01:06:21
streets during those football Saturdays I want to make sure that we give a shout
01:06:26
out here Captain to a retired Columbus detective his name is Phil Walden who had a very impressive career we're
01:06:35
giving him a shout out because he worked for 11 straight days he worked 16 hour days for 11 straight days when the home
01:06:45
when Marty mn's home in Westerville was found burned down he worked that crime scene all those hours for that many days
01:06:54
in a row all all Phil Walden during his impressive career with the Columbus Police Department he worked for 33 years
01:07:02
in the Columbus Police Department he took zero sick days during 33 years of service and during that time he worked
01:07:11
