This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the Olympic Park bombing, the life of con artist Salvatore Spinato, and the miraculous recovery of Christina Yumowski.

The episode begins with a report on the Olympic Park bombing that occurred on July 27, 1996, in Atlanta, Georgia. The bombing resulted in two deaths and over 100 injuries. The investigation into the bombing reveals possible connections to earlier bombings in Spokane, Washington, and other criminal activities.

Salvatore Spinato, also known as Sal Olivario, is profiled as a con artist with a violent past. His ex-wife, Beth Smith, shares her experience of being deceived by Spinato, who posed as a war hero and eventually revealed his criminal background. The episode details how Spinato's deceit led to a dangerous confrontation with Beth's boyfriend, Greg.

Christina Yumowski's story is highlighted as a miraculous recovery from neurofibromatosis, a condition that doctors predicted would lead to her early death. Her family recounts their experience with Father Ralph Diorio, a priest known for his healing prayers, which they believe contributed to Christina's unexpected recovery.

The episode concludes with a look at a murder case involving Dana Satterfield and a door-to-door saleswoman who witnessed a suspicious man fleeing the scene. The investigation into Dana's murder remains ongoing, with police seeking to identify the suspect.

00:00:47
christina yumowski was still a toddler when doctors told her parents she would likely die before the age of 10.

00:02:03
they are seductively charming totally convincing utterly without conscience but rarely violent
00:02:10
some who know the debonair hustle you're about to meet say he also fits the type
00:02:14
that is unless you cross him hello tony the usual table please well this looks very nice
00:02:26
when beth smith met sal olivario she had one vulnerability oliverio found it and latched on
00:02:33
ah thank you tony your best champagne i was um a single mother of two children financially i was very stable
00:02:42
career-wise i was very stable and i i guess the only thing that was really missing in that equation was a husband
00:02:48
and a father for my children you're gorgeous at the time beth was a computer
00:02:57
consultant oliverio ran a physical therapy business best says he recounted in detail his
00:03:03
distinguished navy career including two years as a pow in vietnam i can't understand unless you were over there
00:03:11
he told me stories about how he was captured in vietnam how he was a prisoner of war how long were you a
00:03:17
prisoner about two years he told these war stories to me he told him to my children
00:03:23
you know my children thought of him as a war hero the only thing i knew was i was
00:03:27
not gonna die there when he would tell these stories he would cry he would literally
00:03:32
cry he would be very believable very believable [Music] beth fell in love with the man oliverio
00:03:43
pretended to be war hero turned entrepreneur they were married in october of 1988.
00:03:50
beth quit her own job to run oliveria's company she says that before long his charming
00:03:55
facade had started to flake away the bottom line numbers always showed him in the red and it was just you know
00:04:04
amazing i didn't understand how he thought he was going to pay these bills that he had coming in sal
00:04:11
could you come in here for a minute yes dear you know i have been over and over these numbers and i just don't
00:04:19
understand what's going on don't worry about it what do you mean don't worry
00:04:22
about it where's the money gonna come from don't worry about i've got some
00:04:25
checks coming in so what about the quarterly taxes you don't understand this business i'll take care of it it's
00:04:31
not your problem it just started becoming obvious that things were not as they appeared to be
00:04:37
before we were married at all in his personality and his background it changed he changed the true hymn came
00:04:44
out the true hymn was stuffed in a box hidden in the basement beth found it shortly before her third
00:04:52
wedding anniversary it had written on its lexington correctional institution and i'd never seen that before and i'd
00:05:00
never heard that name before [Music] oliverio's untidy pass was spelled out in 20-point bold type
00:05:11
so was his real name salvatore spinato he had done time in kentucky for bank fraud
00:05:18
the article said he had run business scams for years allegedly duping one investor of more than a quarter of a
00:05:24
million dollars when it suited him spinato had worked undercover for the fbi posing as a
00:05:30
corrupt contractor in a widely publicized sting operation the people who had taken him into their
00:05:37
confidence and had paid him bribes felt double-crossed when they found out he was working for the fbi and i think the
00:05:43
fbi wasn't too sure at the end whether sal was leaking information to the other
00:05:48
side for whatever reason nobody trusted him at the end of that investigation it told me that i was married to someone
00:05:56
that was very deceptive very manipulative and someone i didn't know at all and everything that he told me about
00:06:05
what he wanted and who he was was a lie beth moved out a few days later she filed for a marriage annulment based on
00:06:15
spinato's fraudulent identity eventually they settled on a divorce we still maintained a
00:06:23
relationship at that point because he he still owed me a significant amount of money and he was making payments on that
00:06:32
not consistently and not by court order at all just occasionally he would call and say i have some extra money and give
00:06:37
me a few hundred dollars towards what he owed me oh sal hi uh thanks for calling back in
00:06:44
june of 1996 beth was preparing to leave town for 10 days her boyfriend greg had his own plans to
00:06:51
be away for part of that time beth asked pinato to help keep an eye on her 17 year old son i got a favor to ask
00:06:58
sal and my son had a had a good relationship when we were married and before we were married they got along
00:07:04
well together i knew he was dating several other women so i assumed there was no other
00:07:10
you know meaning that he could take from this at all and he said that was fine you know just
00:07:15
you know that was fine he would do that he would look in on my on my son a couple days after beth left the
00:07:22
country i got a call out of the blue from sal he identified himself as sal alvario and
00:07:28
he called me and said that he needed to talk to me right away um that he was very concerned about her son that he was
00:07:36
involved with some drugs yeah it's drugs the kid's gonna get in trouble she's out
00:07:41
of the country i don't know what to do greg says it on july 3rd he met with spinato at a local convenience store
00:07:47
he's going to get in trouble i had no reason to doubt him he he seemed genuine in what he was saying he
00:07:53
was very concerned about uh his welfare his health and well-being it was his you
00:07:58
know his stepson he said there's a house that i just bought around the corner
00:08:02
that i'm in the process of remodeling would i mind just following him there and
00:08:08
he'd give me some more information and there was some information that had to
00:08:12
do with me so i agreed it's a great neighborhood i got the house for a wonderful price the drug story was a
00:08:18
ruse according to greg spinato's real motive soon became painfully clear i thought this would be a little more
00:08:25
private let me show you what i found the club had um an electric shock to it it was a
00:08:37
it was a taser weapon i knew that i was in a real bad situation i mean nobody saw me go in
00:08:43
nobody knew where i was i knew i was history we're gonna kill you you ain't walking
00:08:49
out of here you ain't never seen your kids again what's going on i thought
00:08:53
this was about the kid you're idioting about him it's about my wife she's still my wife's competition i
00:09:00
realized that this had nothing to do with her son the whole purpose in sal's mind was to
00:09:08
um for me to stop seeing his ex-wife i've got a decision to make i've got to
00:09:14
decide if i want this guy to blow you away or not [Music] look at him look at him
00:09:20
so i looked up at him and i recognized him this is a guy who had been in my house
00:09:27
how old did you say the roof was a few weeks earlier greg had listed his home for sale
00:09:32
he says the man represented himself as a prospective buyer but it now seemed he had been a spy for sal spinato
00:09:40
and uh we'll be in touch thanks he mentioned his name but i didn't remember it you know
00:09:49
so as he pulled away i wrote down his license plate number i don't know what possessed me to even think of doing
00:09:58
that but thank god that i did okay sal i'll do whatever you want i was willing
00:10:05
to do anything say anything to get out of that house the whole conversation shifted you know
00:10:12
he had decided that he had decided that he was going to let me live that he wasn't going to kill me but that
00:10:18
i better come up with a real good story about how to break it off with his wife we're going to go for a little ride we
00:10:24
got to come up with a plan greg had another plan he went straight to the police they identified paul homer shaffer
00:10:34
spinato's alleged accomplice from the license number greg jotted down earlier
00:10:39
schaefer is currently in jail awaiting trial on charges of kidnapping and assault
00:10:45
salvatore spinata was arrested booked then released on bail he did not show for a scheduled court
00:10:51
date in january and his whereabouts are currently unknown i think he's a very desperate man
00:10:59
i think he's gone over the edge of what he's done in the past with this latest incident
00:11:05
i think he's a very dangerous person and if he would do this what else would he
00:11:09
do now he's moved into the realm of manipulating people by using violence there's no reason to conclude that he
00:11:15
won't do it again in the future especially especially if he sees from some point of view he's got nothing to
00:11:21
lose and he's got to know he's been around the system long enough to know
00:11:25
that we're looking for him we want him [Music] next they said she'd never live long enough
00:11:47
to jump rope but that was before christina yumowski's remarkable encounter with a faith-healing priest
00:11:53
named ralph diorio [Music] the journey from sickness to health is often a mysterious passage at times
00:12:11
inexplicable even the doctors themselves perhaps most baffling of all other dramatic recoveries attributed to divine
00:12:18
healing tonight we visit the world of father ralph de orio a catholic priest who's
00:12:23
been credited with thousands of miraculous healings at father diorio's prayer meetings
00:12:33
worshipers topple to the floor left and right it is not uncommon to see dozens of
00:12:38
people sprawled around the room some call it the slaying of the spirit a total surrender of individual will to
00:12:45
the power of god you might be getting the gift of tears that's a gift too father diorio ministers to ills of the
00:12:53
body as well as those of the soul though he is quick to point out that any miracle cures are not his work but gods
00:13:03
it appears that god has chosen me openly clearly publicly and all he needed for me was okay lord i
00:13:14
want it to be your instrument of speech of thought of touch so i become the visible presence of god
00:13:23
but god is the divine healer steve christie christina was born with neurofibromatosis stan yumowski and his
00:13:33
family are among those who speak from experience when they testified of the extraordinary power of diorio's prayers
00:13:40
it's a degenerative genetic disorder the umowski's ordeal began a few weeks
00:13:46
before christmas in 1988 it was a proverbial ordinary day mary umowski was immersed in housework
00:13:54
three-year-old christina was napping on the living room floor sleepy head did you have a good nap
00:14:01
christina i walked over to her and her eyes were kind of staring up at the ceiling and she didn't respond to me
00:14:09
sweetie can you hear me her eyes were open but she wasn't acknowledging me she wasn't saying
00:14:15
anything and she was just making this little girl gurgling sound in her throat christina
00:14:22
sweet come on come on baby [Music] honey as i dialed the doctor that's when she
00:14:30
started convulsing not a wild convulsion was basically a tremor on one side of her body
00:14:36
sweetie christina okay that's all right it's okay i don't know what told me to start
00:14:43
timing it i remember it started at one o'clock that day december 1st and the
00:14:48
seizure lasted for 20 minutes i'm sorry but the news is not good christina is suffering
00:14:56
with neurofibromatosis nf causes tumors to grow on the nerve endings and in christina's case she's developed
00:15:04
an optic glioma the specialists all agreed the neurofibromatosis was unstoppable it
00:15:12
would compromise christina's vision disrupt her physical coordination and ultimately take her life
00:15:18
it was almost a certainty is she going to time i'm afraid that's a possibility you're
00:15:25
going to have to face we sat down and we cried for weeks on end tears would just come to our our eyes at
00:15:33
any time during the day or night we couldn't sleep we were devastated by it we were going every six months for
00:15:40
follow-up mri and hearing the worst news each time that the tumor was growing the disease took its toll
00:15:49
as expected christina fell far behind her classmates and physical ability there's certain things she would not be
00:15:57
able to do at all skipping forget about it running i mean the coordination wasn't
00:16:04
there to do any of these things jumping she couldn't get her feet off the ground
00:16:08
of course the first question you ask is why why why god why my daughter what did
00:16:13
she ever do to hurt you you know that type of thing anger set in for a while at the urging of a friend the umowskis
00:16:22
attended one of father diorio's prayer meetings in february of 1992. stan was deeply skeptical
00:16:31
his doubts however were outweighed by his desperation i still had some anger in me
00:16:39
even though i agreed to go i i carried a tape recorder in my pocket and i taped the entire service
00:16:45
thinking that if this man is a fraud i'll expose them dozens had come to be healed each hoping
00:16:54
for a personal blessing despite his skepticism stan was determined that christina would be
00:17:00
chosen are there any children out there who are suffering please raise your hand father
00:17:06
right here father yes yes father my daughter would you please bring her here to me
00:17:15
i was so excited and thrilled just for the fact that they got called forward you know after seeing a number of people
00:17:21
there i thought our chances of even being called or having christina blessed were
00:17:26
almost nil sweetheart what is your name christina christina now christina do you believe in jesus
00:17:35
yes do you love jesus yes i love jesus good i'm gonna say a prayer for you right now
00:17:42
[Music] there are three types of healing there's the physical healing the spiritual
00:17:48
healing and the psychological healing so god is aiming for all three of these healings
00:17:56
to give this person a new chance a new a new order a new chapter in the autobiography of that person's life you
00:18:02
see though stan and mary had come in search of a miracle they had no idea what one
00:18:08
might look like mommy what is it sweetie mommy how did that man do that do it christina how did he make it so hot what
00:18:17
are you talking about mommy when that man touched me on my head he made me feel hard
00:18:25
and then i remembered what father diorio had said during the service about people
00:18:28
feeling a warmth in their body and then only then me who was all bundled up i was so cold i looked at her
00:18:35
her hood was down no gloves on her coat was hanging open do you remember when father diorios said that
00:18:41
when the holy spirit enters your body you might feel warm was it a miracle in the making within two days the answer
00:18:48
became clear to stan and mary right on the front stoop of this school she starts jumping rope and her feet are
00:18:55
not just an inch off the ground she's literally jumping a half a foot off the
00:18:58
ground and not just a couple of jumps she's jumping and she's jumping and i'm looking at her like disbelief
00:19:06
and she calls out to me mommy how can i do this all of a sudden her words all of a sudden
00:19:14
hello doctor thanks for calling listen i was wondering if you had a chance to view
00:19:19
the mris any lingering dumpster dissolved two weeks later when christina's doctor
00:19:25
called with results from the latest mri well how much is it going down okay all right we'll see it meeting
00:19:36
we we went to see uh the doctor in in person and um i said well doctor show me where the
00:19:42
tumor is you you said it was greatly reduced please show me where the tumor is he put
00:19:46
his finger on this one he said well this is where it was we asked a physician unconnected with
00:19:54
this case to review two of christina's mris one was made in 1991 almost a year
00:20:01
before christina's visit to father diorio christina's tumor showed up as
00:20:07
thickening on a part of the brain known as the optic chiasm the other mri was made in 1992 shortly
00:20:16
after father diorio's blessing [Music] christina's mri scan in 1992 in the region of the optic chiasm
00:20:26
appears to be normal it appears that in 1992 the thickening of the optic chiasm has disappeared when
00:20:34
compared with the previous exam of 1991. in neurofibromatosis there have been rare instances of
00:20:43
regression of optic nerve gliomas but this is a rare event [Music] it would appear that christina is among
00:20:53
those rare few recent mris confirmed that in the five years since father diorio bless
00:20:59
christina the life-threatening tumor has not returned i couldn't jump rope and now i could do
00:21:06
it very well i couldn't really do anything i couldn't jump or run or anything
00:21:17
i'm glad that i can do things now and i can keep up with the other kids there are many healings where both
00:21:27
medicine and prayer are constantly working god works through all his creation and one of god's primary materialistic
00:21:36
naturalistic scientific ways of healing is through the medical profession i thank god every day for what he's done
00:21:43
of course i thank father diorio for being the catalyst in that healing absolutely positively was a miracle
00:21:53
and i could never thank him enough for that [Music] in this age of cold facts and hard
00:22:00
science is a room for something as unexplainable as an honest-to-god miracle for the umowskis and literally thousands
00:22:08
of others who believe father deorio's intervention saved them from sickness or
00:22:11
death the answer is a heartfelt yes next a door-to-door saleswoman has a startling face-to-face encounter with a
00:22:24
murder suspect [Music] july 31 1995 roebuck south carolina the end of a hot summer day became a
00:22:45
prelude to mystery for a door-to-door saleswoman we will call shirley it was nice meeting you it's nice doing
00:22:51
business with you okay i better get at around 6 30 p.m shirley sold a bottle of cleaning fluid to a new customer 27
00:22:58
year old dana satterfield the mother of two children dana had recently separated from her husband
00:23:05
she owned and operated her own beauty salon just off state highway 221. she was real nice and you know she told
00:23:14
me to wait because she wanted to see my product she was real friendly she was outspoken
00:23:20
real friendly lady [Music] after the sale shirley headed down the road to look for other customers
00:23:29
an hour later she would pass back by the salon and emerge as the key witness in a
00:23:34
murder case on her return trip shirley looked in the window and saw that it was 8 11 p.m
00:23:44
dana was cleaning up getting everything i guess to close up the shop for the night she was like
00:23:50
wiping out the sink she was standing right between where i left my product at and um i waved at her and i kept going
00:23:59
at around 8 30 after she made two more calls shirley returned to the salon one final time to wait for her ride home
00:24:08
i noticed the lights was on and i was gonna go into the shop the beauty shop but i just stopped
00:24:15
and i said no i bet not going i might get in trouble so i went and stood at the street at the edge of the pavement
00:24:22
then i noticed i heard a noise a loud thump noise [Music] i kept hearing about two or three thump
00:24:32
noises i kept looking back the next time shirley turned around someone had turned the lights out
00:24:40
and i said wow she can really come out then i was happy because you know i wanted to talk to her
00:24:47
by that time i heard a big crash sound when i looked to my left i noticed a man getting off the ground off his knees
00:24:56
knocked this grab my bag and i started running shirley thought she had crossed paths
00:25:02
with a burglar she ran to the liquor store 50 feet away to call the police and we met and we looked at each other
00:25:14
you know how a crazy person looked when they crazy that's how he looked like he
00:25:17
was real crazy and he scared me so that's why i had to run again to get away from it
00:25:24
shirley tried to flag down a motorist when that failed she ran to the nearest house and phone 9-1-1
00:25:33
a deputy sheriff arrived assuming that the beauty salon had been robbed he had no idea if dana satterfield was
00:25:40
still inside [Music] dana satterfield had been beaten severely she had been raped she had been strangled
00:25:56
and there was no indication that robbery was a motive and there was no evidence of any other disturbance in any
00:26:04
other part of the salon i just couldn't believe that anybody would want to hurt her because
00:26:11
she never hurt no one she tried to help a lot of people and she did help a lot of people
00:26:19
initially suspicion focused on dana's husband mike however mike says their breakup was
00:26:25
amicable in addition mike in no way fit the description of the man seen fleeing from
00:26:30
the trailer all friends and family and people that knew us know you know that that i didn't
00:26:38
have anything to do with uh dana's murder because i wouldn't put someone through that or put my
00:26:45
children through that or i couldn't do something like that we've not ruled anyone out in terms of
00:26:52
saying that one person or another has absolutely no connection with this case but at this point in time we're not
00:26:59
actively pursuing mike satterfield as a suspect the police did look into the possibility
00:27:08
that mike had hired someone to kill his wife but the brutal manner in which dana had
00:27:13
been raped and strangled was inconsistent with a professional hit we believe this is a predator
00:27:21
a serial killer a person who would have stalked miss satterfield and waited for an opportunity
00:27:30
to kill her in the manner that they did i'm sure he didn't anticipate a sales lady
00:27:39
and and certainly not a sales lady who would make a sale earlier in the evening and then come back by
00:27:46
and be standing in front of the trailer maybe even while this murder was taking place
00:27:55
i didn't know what had happened but i knew somebody needed help and i just wanted somebody to get
00:28:01
somebody there to see what was going on it was pure luck that shirley had come face to face with the alleged killer
00:28:10
two weeks later another bit of luck a second eyewitness came forward ken smith was one of dana satterfield's
00:28:19
customers at around 8 40 on the night of the murder he was driving past the salon
00:28:26
as i come up 221 i looked over at dana's i seen her lights off i seen her car
00:28:31
sitting there i thought that was odd that she was her car was there without her lights on
00:28:38
as soon as i turned back around and looked at the road that's where i seen this guy run out of the road to the
00:28:44
shoulder he turned around and looked at me while he was standing at his bronco he had his hand like in his shirt
00:28:51
as i come by he sort of just turned around and gave me a you know go to hell look like what are you looking
00:28:58
at you know why are you looking at me based upon the descriptions of both eyewitnesses police have come up with
00:29:06
this composite the suspect is 18 to 25 years old he is five foot six to five foot nine inches
00:29:14
tall and weighs between 145 and 170 pounds he has blonde or light brown hair he's got to be stomped
00:29:24
and he's got to pay for what he did to my child and if he's done this to somebody else
00:29:32
we need to stop him now [Music] sometimes i wake up at night and sit straight up
00:29:40
in bed and see somebody strangling her and i can't get to her it's it's heard a song
00:29:52
[Music] [Music] coming up a possible break in the olympic park bombing was that attack
00:30:25
connected to similar bombings which occurred weeks earlier on the other side of the country
00:30:31
but first some 20 years ago a simple act of kindness launched the career of renowned
00:30:36
chef moses travis now he wants to find the woman who inspired him to pursue his dream
00:30:43
[Music] at one time or another we've all done something nice for someone else without
00:30:59
expecting anything in return whether we realize it or not such acts can occasionally have a profound effect
00:31:07
every so often a small kindness can completely change a person's life [Music]
00:31:16
moses travis is one of the country's most critically acclaimed chefs he owns two award-winning mexican
00:31:21
restaurants in arizona both curiously named such is life how moses acquired that name as at the
00:31:28
center of his own personal unsolved mystery [Music] in the mid-1970s moses was a day cook at
00:31:36
a small taco stand on the island of cozumel in mexico he had a reputation for making the best
00:31:42
tacos in town one of moses favorite customers was an american tourist named judy anderson oh
00:31:50
hi judy are you unusual yes judy was a school teacher who visited the island seven times over a three-year
00:31:58
period moses vividly remembers judy and her last visit in 1977. getting me the hotel
00:32:06
much better she was very nice lady quiet the lady wrote a book all the time and she asked me if i can uh
00:32:14
if i have time to because she wants to go to the mainland which is across the island which is you know
00:32:21
15 miles 17 miles across the aisle and the mainland is where all the ruins are the next day moses closed up shop and
00:32:31
set off with judy on a day-long excursion their destination the mayan pyramids along the yucatan
00:32:38
peninsula around noon they stopped for lunch and communicated as best they could in
00:32:44
broken english moses wouldn't you like to own a restaurant like this someday with tables and chairs
00:32:53
oh yeah you know i dreamed to open a restaurant but you know no money such as life
00:33:00
excuse me such is life it means that's the way life is you know such is life i like that yeah
00:33:11
you know what judy when i open my restaurant i want to call sachi's life and put it on the menus and it's like a
00:33:18
paid idea nothing more was said but deep inside moses an idea had taken root it would begin to blossom later that
00:33:28
afternoon you know any time you come as the day came to a close it was time to say
00:33:33
goodbye moses would take a ferry back to the island judy would stay on the mainland
00:33:38
to catch a flight back to the united states oh no tip no no no no it's not a tip
00:33:46
before parting judy had an unexpected gift for moses goodbye bye judy when moses opened the envelope he was
00:33:58
stunned to find five one hundred dollar bills and a hastily written note dear moses go make such his life happen
00:34:07
love judy moses did just that within a month he had opened his own tiny restaurant on
00:34:14
cozumel naturally he named it such as life moses eagerly awaited judy's next trip
00:34:20
to the island but he never saw her again now some 20 years later moses travis is
00:34:27
a united states citizen his restaurants have been lauded by both local newspapers and the national press
00:34:34
he and his family live in scottsdale arizona and believe they owe much of their good fortune to the unselfish
00:34:40
kindness of judy anderson the story helps to understand that it came out of nothing i mean it came out
00:34:50
of an act of love it's not an act of money or power or it's just an act of love
00:34:58
moses need just a little push to become a wonderful butterfly she understood what moses had inside
00:35:07
english such as life she was very wise to let him know that he was good enough to
00:35:14
become what he is now it will be a very nice surprise for somebody you know like her after 20
00:35:22
years somebody say they looking for you because you are the one that says i just
00:35:26
laugh that would be nice no i think that will be more than thank you [Music] next
00:35:46
two bombings and two bank robberies in spokane washington the terrifying explosion during atlanta's olympic games
00:35:53
our special report examines possible links that may be much more than coincidence
00:35:59
[Music] july 27th 1996 atlanta centennial park thousands had gathered to share in the
00:36:19
excitement of the olympic games but no one realized that a 9-1-1 operator had just received this shocking
00:36:26
phone call [Music] [Applause] at 1 25 a.m the park became like a war zone two people died
00:36:47
111 were injured a pipe bomb hidden in a military backpack had exploded next to the atnt
00:36:55
pavilion the initial suspect was a security guard named richard jewell but after months of investigation he was
00:37:03
officially cleared i am not the olympic park bomber with a simple statement the investigation threatened to grind to a
00:37:13
halt then a west coast newspaper published startling new information as some believe could lead to an arrest in the
00:37:20
olympic bombing the evidence is purely circumstantial but it seems much more than coincidence
00:37:27
in the newspaper scenario atlanta was a last in a series of attacks that began three months earlier and 3000 miles away
00:37:39
april fools day 1996 2 36 p.m a customized van pulled up to the rear of the spokesman review spokane
00:37:48
washington's leading newspaper get out get out call 9-1-1 just then the newspaper's operations manager arrived
00:38:08
fortunately no one was injured in the blast but the bombers did leave a calling card
00:38:13
a rambling incoherent diatribe that quoted liberally from the bible and appeared to be an extreme right-wing
00:38:19
manifesto at that very moment two armed men operating with military-like precision
00:38:28
entered the u.s bank 20 blocks away the robbers made up with some 70 000 in cash
00:38:40
they too left a calling card copies of the same rambling diatribe found founded the newspaper
00:38:51
[Music] three months later another pipeline at a planned parenthood office and another robbery at the same u.s bank
00:39:07
these surveillance photos would provide the major break in the case when a military surplus dealer in idaho
00:39:13
recognized a parka worn by one of the gunmen he told authorities he had sold similar
00:39:18
parches to three men robert berry vern merrell and charles barbie in october of 1996 all three were
00:39:28
arrested in portland oregon they were allegedly members of an obscure right-wing religious sect
00:39:35
a year earlier charles barby himself had been interviewed by the spokesman review
00:39:40
for a series on the anti-government movement barbie said that there may be a time
00:39:46
when when he and people like him would have to resort to warfare and that they would
00:39:50
have to blood would have to be shed because because the government was so evil on the day of the arrest no one imagined
00:39:59
that there might be a possible connection between these three men and the bombing of the olympics
00:40:05
then in december the fbi released photographs of the type of backpack reportedly used to conceal the bomb in
00:40:12
atlanta once again the military surplus dealer in idaho came forward with a shocking
00:40:18
disclosure he proceeded to tell me that that he believed he'd sold a backpack to these
00:40:24
men that was similar to the military-style backpack the alice pack used in the atlanta bombing
00:40:29
he said that the men had asked how to get fingerprints off such a backpack and he'd told them just to throw in the
00:40:34
washing machine and he said they'd asked about a detonator about how to create a
00:40:38
time-delayed detonator much like the one used in the atlanta bombing and that he
00:40:42
had given them advice on that the spokesman review immediately launched its own investigation
00:40:49
more possible links between the spokane and atlanta bombings now came to light what we found was that one of the men
00:40:58
charles barbie had worked for a t and left the company and discussed because of their support of affirmative action
00:41:05
and and some other programs and if you will recall the bomb was detonated not far from the atm t
00:41:11
pavilion within centennial park suggesting that there might have been a motive in addition to that the fbi had obtained
00:41:21
phone records that showed that there had been telephone calls made from the atlanta area to
00:41:28
barbie's north idaho home immediately after the bombing in atlanta a backpack
00:41:36
an alleged grudge against a t several suspicious phone calls the evidence was hardly conclusive but
00:41:43
it was enough for the spokesman review the paper went public with his findings on super bowl sunday 1997.
00:41:51
within hours another stunning link between the bombings was revealed an architect in atlanta was watching the
00:41:58
super bowl he saw during the halftime pictures of the three men who were charged with the bombings up here and
00:42:05
might have been linked to the bombings in atlanta when he saw the picture of robert berry
00:42:11
he said to himself and later to others that looks like the man i saw carrying a backpack into centennial park the night
00:42:20
of the olympic bombing the architect had twice faxed this sketch of the man with a backpack to the
00:42:26
fbi both times there was no response in january he faxed it to the spokesman review
00:42:34
for many people the resemblance between the sketch and robert berry is striking was robert berry among the celebrants in
00:42:43
centennial park on the night of the bombing if so was he responsible for the tragedy
00:42:52
the fbi has interviewed the architect and investigated the claims of the spokesman review
00:42:58
they maintain that any connection between the spokane and olympic bombings is quote a creation of the spokesman
00:43:04
review the newspaper stands by its story [Music] join me next time for another edition of
00:43:44
unsolved mysteries [Music] [Music] you
