This episode covers the murder of Jamie Faith, the investigation led by Detective Eric Barnes, and the involvement of Jennifer Faith and Darrin Lopez. Key discussions include the details of the shooting, the victim's background, and the investigation's twists.

Detective Eric Barnes describes the shocking murder of Jamie Faith, an executive at American Airlines, who was shot multiple times in front of his wife, Jennifer, while walking their dog in North Oak Cliff, Dallas. The investigation reveals that Jamie was well-liked in the community and had just celebrated his 15th anniversary with Jennifer.

As detectives gather evidence, they discover a suspicious black Nissan pickup truck linked to the crime. Surveillance footage and witness accounts lead them to believe that the shooter had a motive, but the reasons behind the murder remain unclear.

Jennifer's emotional reaction to the murder raises questions, especially after it is revealed that she had been in contact with her high school sweetheart, Darrin Lopez, who lives in Tennessee. The investigation uncovers a web of texts between Jennifer and Darrin, suggesting a deeper connection.

Ultimately, both Jennifer and Darrin are arrested, with evidence pointing to a murder-for-hire plot. The episode concludes with the shocking revelation of Jennifer's manipulative role in the murder, leading to her life sentence and Darrin's conviction.

[AUDIO LOGO] [INTRIGUING MUSIC] [PHONE LINE RINGING] DET. ERIC BARNES: A 911 call came
00:00:13
in from a resident that lived within the neighborhood in North Oak Cliff, stating that shots were fired.
00:00:20
[GUNSHOTS] What happened? - And they observe the man running to a black vehicle and driving away.
00:00:29
[TENSE MUSIC] - Officers arrive at the scene-- [SCREAMING] - We find Mr. Faith lying in the middle of the street,
00:00:39
a middle-aged executive at American Airlines. - What could he have done to elicit this type of response?
00:00:45
- Very shocking. Very shocking. - And he just kept going. [CRIES] - From the jump, this was a very unusual incident.
00:00:56
REPORTER: This video provided by a neighbor shows a threatening man. He's seen walking past a home holding an axe.
00:01:03
[SHOUTING] [SIREN BLARING] [INTRIGUING MUSIC] - The scenario that was given to us
00:01:27
was that the victim, Mr. Faith and his wife, had just left their home to go walk their dog.
00:01:34
And the suspect pulls up and shoots Mr. Faith eight times in the middle of the street.
00:01:49
DET. ERIC BARNES: There was three gunshot wounds to the torso, three to the chest area, one in the head
00:01:58
and also one shot to the groin area. One of the things that stood out to us the most was the gunshot wound to the groin,
00:02:07
is the ultimate low blow. You've accomplished what you need to accomplish by shooting them in the head,
00:02:12
but the shot to the groin is kind of, in my opinion, with someone getting the last laugh.
00:02:18
ANDREW CHERAMIE: You immediately start brainstorming and trying to think, what is the motive behind this?
00:02:24
What really happened here? DET. ERIC BARNES: There was one witness that heard the gunshots.
00:02:30
[GUNSHOTS] He walked out to the street to see what was going on, and he saw a person holding a gun walking
00:02:40
towards him in his direction. But the shooter got in his vehicle and drove off without any words or any kind of conflict.
00:02:50
One of the things that the witness was able to do was to provide us with some detail about the suspect.
00:02:55
It was a medium-sized male, um, wearing a blue mask, and there was a snap, a photograph of the truck
00:03:01
as it was driving away. Who would have done this to Jamie? Because whoever is on the other end of that gun
00:03:08
needs to go to jail, and they need to go to jail as soon as possible. At this point, the picture is the best thing that we have.
00:03:21
[EERIE MUSIC] NARRATOR: The man lying dead on the street, Jamie Faith, had married Jennifer after her first marriage broke down.
00:03:33
The couple moved to this quiet neighborhood when he was promoted at work. KEVIN KRAUSE: This case really got a lot of attention
00:03:50
because this was an ordinary couple living in a nice neighborhood with good jobs.
00:03:58
We were pretty much on top of this from the very beginning. We found out that they had been together for 15 years.
00:04:06
They met on a blind date, and they had just celebrated their 15 year anniversary
00:04:11
the night before this murder. They had a single child, a daughter, Amber, who was Jennifer's biological daughter.
00:04:20
And then when she turned 18, she asked Jamie to adopt her legally. And he did so very willingly.
00:04:27
And they adored each other. All indications were that this was a very loving relationship.
00:04:33
By all accounts, they were-- they were very happy, leading a great life. [INTRIGUING MUSIC]
00:04:41
Jamie had a great job and was making very good money. What could he have done to elicit this type of response?
00:04:51
Did he owe someone some money? Did he steal money? Was he having an affair? Maybe gambling debts?
00:04:59
I'm wondering, like, what could this guy have been involved in. It just really gripped the imagination of people.
00:05:07
ANDREW CHERAMIE: First and foremost, you want to figure out what is the modem. Mr. Faith was a middle aged executive at American Airlines.
00:05:15
Certainly did not fit the profile of someone who would be an intended target, or normally who would be a victim of homicide.
00:05:24
The first thing is to try to obtain video of the vehicle to determine its route of travel
00:05:33
out of the neighborhood. Time is absolutely of the essence, because from the time
00:05:38
that the initial officers and investigators make the scene, we're behind the eight ball because the suspect has
00:05:45
fled in a vehicle within a half an hour, you know, he could be 40 or 50 miles outside of Dallas.
00:05:53
[TENSE MUSIC] DET. ERIC BARNES: While we were canvassing the neighborhood looking for footage, we found a neighbor
00:05:59
that had video footage that had a black Nissan pickup truck driving by. The video was good, but it wasn't good enough
00:06:09
to get the details of the license plate or to get a picture of the shooter's face.
00:06:13
- One of the things that was very helpful was that in the right rear glass of the vehicle,
00:06:20
there was a white T sticker. We thought that that was representing the Texas Rangers baseball team, which is
00:06:32
home here in Arlington, Texas. So that sort of narrows your focus. DET. ERIC BARNES: Our job is to kind of figure
00:06:38
out where the truck went next. It was almost like looking for a needle in a haystack.
00:06:43
[EERIE MUSIC] NICK BARREIRO: What we have here is an image that was captured by a neighbor
00:06:57
of the suspect's truck, fleeing the scene after the shooting. The white T decal on the back of the truck
00:07:06
is the key to finding this vehicle, and the old way would have been just keeping an eye out for it.
00:07:12
Nowadays, we have a lot cooler tools to be able to find a vehicle like this. Cameras constantly scan and take pictures of vehicles just
00:07:23
like this truck, and a database can be searched by make and model. Investigators can look for Nissan Titans that
00:07:30
were scanned in this area, and very quickly narrow it down by looking for that white T decal
00:07:36
on the back window. [OMINOUS MUSIC] NARRATOR: While officers search for the black Nissan pickup
00:07:43
truck, detectives talk to the victim's wife, Jennifer. - I know this is a tragedy, and I
00:07:50
can't imagine what you're going through right now, but hopefully we can get out to the bottom of this together.
00:07:55
- My first impression of Jennifer was she was very distraught. - He's my best friend.
00:08:01
And [SOBS] such a good kid, relationship-- - Jennifer's account of what happened that morning was they
00:08:12
had exited their front door with their dog, and 15 to 20 feet away from their front door,
00:08:18
they were confronted by a masked gunman. - And he just kept going! And I was-- stopping, and--
00:08:27
[CRIES] he was shot. And my husband's expression-- I said, I don't know, and he tackled me to the--
00:08:38
to the ground, and he is hitting my face and kept trying to turn me over, and I--
00:08:48
And he hit my side and back and hitting, and then he tried to take my rings. And then, um, he pulled out a roll of duct tape,
00:08:58
and he tied my-- taped up my hands. And I remember screaming, and was just looking at the tape.
00:09:05
And it was just-- I thought-- [CRIES] and I was-- I was screaming, help me, help me, help me.
00:09:16
- Jennifer said at that point, neighbors started coming out, which startled the shooter, and he ran to his truck and left.
00:09:23
- Did you see what he had on? - I remember a bright blue surgical mask, and everything else was just dark.
00:09:32
All I could see were his eyes, like evil. - Jennifer had several red marks on her arm
00:09:39
where she was grabbed. Also, I believe she had marks on the side of her face as well where she was struck.
00:09:44
We just were unsure as to why she wasn't shot as well. - Why do you choose to shoot and kill
00:09:51
Mr. Faith in such an extreme manner, and all you do is put some duct tape around Jennifer's hands
00:09:58
and flee the scene? DET. ERIC BARNES: We kind of went back and forth as to what this could have been about.
00:10:06
We didn't know if someone was waiting on him. Or if this was just a crime of opportunity,
00:10:14
being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Could this have been a disgruntled employee?
00:10:22
We thought it may have been more of an emotional thing with the actual groin shot.
00:10:29
They were there to kill him, but we didn't know why. And I think that that was the-- you know, the biggest
00:10:36
question that we had. [SOFT PIANO MUSIC] KEVIN KRAUSE: Jamie was really, really well-liked
00:10:50
in their neighborhood. Everyone said that he was the nicest, kindest person. They were just in disbelief that he could
00:11:03
have been targeted this way. [OMINOUS MUSIC] DET. ERIC BARNES: We found several videos,
00:11:11
some from businesses, some from residences. ANDREW CHERAMIE: They were able to track the vehicle
00:11:22
through the Oak Cliff neighborhood up until it reached I-35, which is a very busy freeway
00:11:29
that runs through Dallas. DET. ERIC BARNES: It made a couple of erratic turns throughout the neighborhood, I believe, to see
00:11:37
if someone was following him. And then he turned onto his service road, which led to him getting on the highway
00:11:42
and traveling, um, eastbound. But we lost it after it got on the freeway because there was no cameras on that route.
00:11:53
ANDREW CHERAMIE: Once we lost track of the vehicle, the trail had essentially gone cold.
00:12:01
- We didn't have a license plate. We don't have a clear description of who our shooter is.
00:12:06
And so the only thing we have is just a basic description of this truck. And it's the only evidence that we
00:12:12
have linking us to our killer. NARRATOR: When detectives get the autopsy report,
00:12:24
it deepens the mystery. - One of the things we look at is shot placement. And the placement of the shots were pretty close together.
00:12:32
It appeared as if someone had some experience with using a firearm, but we definitely believe it wasn't
00:12:39
their first time shooting. ANDREW CHERAMIE: And I remember when I spoke to Detective Barnes about it,
00:12:46
my first I think comment to him was, man, something's up with this. This is not right, and he agreed.
00:12:57
[SOFT MUSIC] DET. ERIC BARNES: We did go back to Jennifer's house because she had several cameras mounted to her house,
00:13:11
and we wanted to take a closer look to see if there was some minor detail that we missed.
00:13:20
[DOOR CLOSES] The doorbell footage that I watched of Jamie and Jennifer, it really, you know, kind of hit home
00:13:29
because he had no idea what was around the corner waiting on him. It was just a normal day, early in the morning,
00:13:35
just trying to get the wheels turning for the day. And then a few steps later, you're being murdered
00:13:41
in front of your wife. And it just kind of, uh, hit home that you never can be too comfortable.
00:13:49
[TENSE MUSIC] NARRATOR: Detectives also examine footage retrieved from the neighbor's house.
00:13:56
- What happened? - You can hear very distinctly there is a yell, or someone yells, hey.
00:14:03
And I believe that it was either two-- two people. It was either Jamie yelling, hey,
00:14:08
because he saw this masked gunman approaching, or it was the shooter yelling, hey, to get Jamie's attention.
00:14:14
And then we hear a barrage of gunshots just one after the other, very violent, very rapid, just one right
00:14:21
after the other. [GUNSHOTS] And then we hear Jennifer yelling. Her yells on that video are just like--
00:14:33
just you can hear it coming from, like, the pit of her stomach. She's just-- just scared of her life
00:14:38
and she's also just sickened from seeing her husband being killed in front of her.
00:14:42
[SCREAMING] WOMAN: Are you OK? NICK BARREIRO: So you can see this resident when he comes out his front door.
00:14:52
He's immediately looking to the right. His dogs are interested in whatever's
00:14:56
happening to the right. And you can hear a female screaming. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] - What happened?
00:15:05
What'd you get? - And then you can hear this homeowner yelling, what happened?
00:15:11
I want to enhance the audio so I can hear better. What's happening with those faint screams in the distance,
00:15:17
and see if there's anything more being said, any more evidence that we can extract from that faint audio
00:15:24
in the distance. In the spectrographic view of this recording, the-- the bright yellow and orange represent a higher
00:15:34
amplitude, a higher volume. Those represent the male coming outside and yelling,
00:15:39
what happened? Those are going to be the brightest portions because those are the loudest.
00:15:44
I'm interested in the more faint audio that's represented by the darker orange, the parts
00:15:49
in between these louder sections where the female can be heard screaming. [SHOUTING ON RECORDING]
00:16:06
So it's possible that the female is yelling, call the police here. It's hard because there's not a lot of detail in this audio
00:16:17
because she is so far away from the microphone. But most of it sounds like unintelligible screaming.
00:16:24
But at this point, she may be saying, call the police. It certainly gives the appearance that she didn't
00:16:31
know what was about to happen. She was legitimately in distress that she had just
00:16:35
watched her husband be killed. [SOMBER MUSIC] NARRATOR: As investigators search through surveillance
00:16:45
camera videos, they find one clip recorded the morning Jamie was killed, which looks suspicious.
00:16:52
DET. ERIC BARNES: There was a camera on the side of her house that was pointing towards her neighbor's backyard,
00:16:57
and around 2:00 or 3:00 AM, there was a-- a male walking around the backyard, just kind of wandering around.
00:17:07
We were unable to see his face just because of the combination of the darkness and also the angle of the camera.
00:17:15
The immediate thoughts were, this could be our suspect. But Jennifer gave a very good explanation of who it was.
00:17:25
She said that she believed it was the-- the guy that used to live next door to her old neighbor,
00:17:30
and he from time to time-- after they got evicted, time to time, he would just wander around the backyard
00:17:37
of that residence. One of the things that you learned in working murder investigations,
00:17:43
it's like a roller coaster. At this point in time, everything hasn't led to anything.
00:17:49
So we're still working around the clock to figure this thing out. [INTRIGUING MUSIC]
00:17:56
One of the things we did was ask for Jennifer's cell phone. We wanted to make sure that we covered all our bases,
00:18:04
and checking her cell phone was one of them. I believe she was a little surprised that we asked for it,
00:18:11
but she-- she gave it over. She passed it over without any question. It would have been a huge red flag for her
00:18:17
not to pass her phone over. [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC] NARRATOR: When the results come back
00:18:23
from a forensic analysis of the phone, it gives detectives their first serious break.
00:18:31
DET. ERIC BARNES: Once a forensic download was done, we were able to go back through some of her old messages,
00:18:37
and we found a text message thread between her and one of her girlfriends. And in the text messages, there was a conversation
00:18:45
in which Jennifer said she reconnected with her high school sweetheart over email named Darrin Lopez.
00:18:55
There was no communication on the phone with Darrin, just old text messages with her girlfriend.
00:19:02
We believe that those may have possibly been deleted. We intentionally didn't speak with Jennifer about Darrin
00:19:11
because we believed that we needed to learn a little bit more about the relationship before we approached her on it,
00:19:16
so we wanted to keep everything under wraps while we continue the investigation.
00:19:21
- We certainly want to follow this lead, just like we follow any leads, as quickly as possible.
00:19:28
NARRATOR: Detective subpoena all of the messages on Jennifer's phone, hoping to retrieve the ones that were deleted.
00:19:36
- We wanted to see how far back they began communicating with each other, and if they were communicating around the time of the murder.
00:19:44
NARRATOR: The information comes back on Jennifer's phone. Unfortunately, detectives are unable to access
00:19:53
the content of her messages with Darrin, but they are able to see how many they exchanged.
00:20:00
- There were an extraordinary amount of text messages between Darrin Lopez and Jennifer Faith.
00:20:10
And when I say extraordinary, I mean extraordinary. - So I turned over 122,000 text messages and phone calls
00:20:21
between Darrin and Jennifer, only occurred over like, a seven or eight-month period.
00:20:27
I mean, that's, like, constant communication. I mean, how could you be in touch with someone
00:20:34
this many times? - There was an extensive background done on Mr. Lopez. We found out that Mr. Lopez was a US Army veteran,
00:20:49
that he was a combat veteran, that he had had several deployments to the Middle East,
00:20:55
that he had been injured in combat, and that he had won several awards for his valor
00:21:05
as army soldier. KEVIN KRAUSE: He was very badly injured, saw his comrades killed in a roadside bomb,
00:21:16
was permanently disabled with a traumatic brain injury, also suffering from PTSD.
00:21:26
He was in a very dark place. NARRATOR: Detectives need to take a closer look at Lopez,
00:21:33
but he lives more than 600 miles from Dallas, in remote Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee.
00:21:41
- I was able to reach out to the Nashville field division and ask for assistance with doing surveillance.
00:21:47
They got great aerial footage of Darrin's property. One of the agents that was involved in coordinating
00:21:55
the flyover got a still photo from the pilot, and he sent it to me immediately, and I couldn't believe it.
00:22:03
Parked in the driveway of Darrin's residence was a black Nissan Titan pickup truck with a white T emblem
00:22:09
on the rear windshield. [OMINOUS MUSIC] Our initial knee-jerk reaction is we wanted to go slap
00:22:17
some cuffs on him. But the truth was, we didn't know who was driving the truck.
00:22:21
If this was, in fact, our vehicle, we still needed to put Darrin in the driver's seat
00:22:26
to connect him to Dallas, or to figure out where he was when the murder took place.
00:22:30
[INTRIGUING MUSIC] ANDREW CHERAMIE: Jennifer Faith decided to reach out to the local news media and did a story,
00:22:47
and in her interview, she was sort of critical of the Dallas Police Department, indicated that she didn't feel that they were doing enough
00:22:56
to investigate Jamie's death. She appeared to be very distraught and concerned
00:23:06
about the investigation. It is an unusual move on her part to sort of take a stab at the investigators.
00:23:21
- We sent our search warrants for Google, and we were able to see that one of Darrin's devices,
00:23:29
which we believe to be a tablet, was used to navigate from his address in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee,
00:23:36
to Jennifer's address in Dallas, Texas. To be able to put him in Cumberland Furnace,
00:23:43
navigating his vehicle with Google Maps, driving step by step, hitting every single cell
00:23:49
tower from Cumberland furnace to Dallas hours before Jamie walked out of his house was big.
00:23:56
NARRATOR: This data, together with the thousands of texts with Jennifer, is enough to get a warrant
00:24:02
to arrest Darrin Lopez. - ATF flew approximately 40 to 50 members, uh, from the Dallas Field Division,
00:24:12
and also members from the Nashville Field Division. The way we looked at it, the more people
00:24:17
that we had there, the less likely we were to use force. - We know from a tactical perspective
00:24:23
that given Mr. Lopez's military history and his background, that this is someone who needs to be
00:24:27
approached very cautiously. However, things didn't go down as we had planned.
00:24:34
- While we were briefing, one of the tactical team members said, hey, Darrin's just got in a vehicle.
00:24:41
He's leaving his property. - Now that he's mobile, that means that we have to try to do
00:24:51
a mobile takedown operation while he's operating a 4,000-pound vehicle. There's a high possibility that he's
00:24:59
got a firearm in his vehicle. We don't know if he knows that we're looking for him,
00:25:05
but there are so many unknowns and so many things that could go wrong that we have to be really careful how we approach this
00:25:14
from a tactical perspective. [SIREN BLARING] [TENSE MUSIC] DET. ERIC BARNES: Darrin was followed by the tactical team
00:25:21
members for several miles. He pulled into a parking lot. And once he pulled in the parking lot,
00:25:26
they assaulted the vehicle. - Maintaining the element of surprise and took him into custody without incident.
00:25:36
It was a relief, absolutely a relief. We searched the property. The front of the house was surrounded by a wooden porch,
00:25:48
and right at the entrance to the kitchen was a empty FedEx box that had an address label on it that
00:25:59
was addressed to Darrin Lopez, and the return address was Jennifer Faith. - So before we even got in the house,
00:26:08
there was evidence of their relationship. ANDREW CHERAMIE: Why is she sending this fella a big screen TV?
00:26:15
It sort of has us asking more questions than are being answered. The search was challenging because the residence
00:26:25
was in complete disarray. It was quite alarming and gave us some insight that things were not right with Mr. Lopez,
00:26:38
because the living conditions were horrible. DET. ERIC BARNES: As agents searched
00:26:45
the inside of their house, they found a green military backpack. Inside the backpack was a Red Bull,
00:26:53
a DVD and also a silver firearm that appeared to have blood on the slide. That gun was significant for two reasons--
00:27:03
the-- the caliber of the firearm initially matched the caliber of the shell casings
00:27:08
recovered at the crime scene. Also, there was physical blood on the firearm. Once we got the pickup truck in our custody,
00:27:18
the one thing that stood out was that the decal was no longer on the rear windshield.
00:27:24
The T was no longer there, but you could see marks on the glass where someone used a razor blade to scrape it off.
00:27:31
So we knew that there was a T at some point on the vehicle. NARRATOR: Detectives also search inside the pickup.
00:27:40
DET. ERIC BARNES: We found a cell phone and we found a backpack. In that backpack was a blue mask
00:27:48
that was similar to the mask that was worn by the shooter during the time of the murder.
00:27:54
I felt at that point that we definitely had the right person. ANDREW CHERAMIE: We make the phone
00:27:59
call to the troops in Dallas. We got him. Go pick up Jennifer. [TENSE MUSIC] - As, you know, I'm trying to get down to the bottom
00:28:18
of this investigation, OK? DET. ERIC BARNES: At the time that Jennifer came down
00:28:23
to the station, she had no clue that Darrin had been arrested. - Have you ever heard of a name, Darrin?
00:28:32
Darrin? - Darrin Lopez. Yeah. - Who is Darrin? - He was one of my best friends. - Jennifer said that her and Darrin had been in this, uh--
00:28:42
they had reconnected and they had been communicating, but there were nothing more than friends, and
00:28:46
that Jamie was aware of it. - Jennifer, if I were to tell you as far as like, I know that there's more to you and
00:28:53
Darrin's relationship, you know, what would you say about that? - I don't know what more you--
00:29:01
I don't know what more you're talking about. - I believe that you knew what happened that day.
00:29:09
I really do. - We showed her a photo of Darrin where he's wearing a blue mask, putting
00:29:16
gas inside the black pickup truck, at which time she was informed that Darrin was the individual
00:29:23
responsible for killing Jamie. - I don't know what to tell you. - Instead of her saying, oh my God, this
00:29:30
is the guy, oh my god, I can't believe he's involved in this, she wanted to where did we get the photo?
00:29:37
- We said-- we sat and we told the world. We told everybody. - I know! - We sat in front of his parents.
00:29:43
We told them. - Because I wanted to-- - But this same guy that killed your husband, Jennifer,
00:29:48
is the same guy that you-- you're communicating with every day. You had over 24,000 text messages and calls.
00:29:55
24,000. - I don't work, he's retired. We talked throughout the day. - Jennifer, besides the point.
00:30:01
This guy killed your husband. - How do you know that? - Because I have proof. And guess what.
00:30:08
Darrin right now is currently (STAMMERING) in jail locked up for murder right now.
00:30:13
- Oh my god. - So my main thing is right now, what is he going to tell me, OK? Why would somebody-- why would he kill this guy?
00:30:22
- I don't know. - I don't really-- - This doesn't even make sense. - Listen to me.
00:30:26
- We haven't seen each other. - Jennifer was very, uh-- very aggressive in her tone from that point on.
00:30:34
- Do I need a lawyer at this point? - It's your call. Whatever you decide. - I think that she felt like she had been played.
00:30:45
She was, like, man, these guys got me down here playing the victim, they played this thing up,
00:30:50
they got me here. Now they're slapping me in the face with this picture of Darrin.
00:30:54
[OMINOUS MUSIC] ANDREW CHERAMIE: We have a lot of pieces to the puzzle now. We have our suspect in custody.
00:31:01
We have a lot of forensic evidence. However, probably one of the most crucial pieces
00:31:10
to the puzzle is that we still don't know why Jamie was targeted. What is it that Jamie Faith did to provoke such a violent act
00:31:22
from someone who seemingly he has no relationship with and doesn't know? DET. ERIC BARNES: We knew that Jennifer may have
00:31:32
had a role in the offense. We just couldn't prove it. - We have to keep digging and the investigation goes on.
00:31:42
NARRATOR: While Jennifer is released without charge, Darrin Lopez awaits trial in jail.
00:31:56
Then, in a twist, Lopez's ex-wife contacts the police, saying she has evidence that Jamie was sending Lopez emails
00:32:09
before the murder. Their content is dark. - Darrin's ex-wife gave us information
00:32:23
regarding emails and involving Jamie and Darrin. She believed there was something
00:32:31
that the police needed, and she called right away and provided me with screenshots.
00:32:36
And the screenshots-- there was several emails that appeared to be sent by Jamie to Darrin,
00:32:42
and they detailed sexual encounters with Jennifer. ANDREW CHERAMIE: The content that was being uncovered
00:32:50
was particularly disturbing. Jamie was bringing multiple men into the home to commit acts of sexual assault,
00:33:00
that she was being beaten, that she was being held down against her will. - It was very, very dark and twisted in its nature.
00:33:12
The emails got more and more violent. The sexual acts got more and more dangerous.
00:33:19
KEVIN KRAUSE: When I read these emails that were sent to-- to Darrin, they were really sordid
00:33:26
and kind of chilling in a way. It painted a portrait of someone who was like a sadist who had these like, sadistic
00:33:34
sexual fantasies. You know, very lurid details about the violent things that he would do to her, that he would have men come by
00:33:42
and rape her and watch this, and, you know, that he wanted Darrin to see this. It seemed like a--
00:33:49
a really twisted mind that would come up with something like this. NARRATOR: Did these emails, seemingly from Jamie,
00:33:58
provoke Darrin to kill him? - You know, when I think about Darrin now, you know, he's got a reason to show
00:34:06
up and kill a guy in the morning while he's taking a walk. ANDREW CHERAMIE: Mr. Faith certainly
00:34:12
didn't fit the profile of a violent sexual predator. - You know, from the aspect of being Jamie,
00:34:21
I'm an executive with American Airlines, you know, I have a high-profile job.
00:34:26
If one of these emails were leaked, I could lose everything. So it doesn't make sense for me to document it and
00:34:32
put it in an email to someone who's going to be upset by me sending. So it-- it just didn't pass the smell test.
00:34:38
I had suspicions as to who was sending these emails, but I had no way of proving it at the time.
00:34:46
NARRATOR: Detectives get the forensic results from Lopez's cell phone retrieved from his pickup.
00:34:54
While Jennifer had deleted their texts, they discover that Lopez hadn't. - The lab called and said, hey, we
00:35:02
were able to access the phone, so we had access to weeks and weeks worth of text messages
00:35:07
between Darrin and Jennifer. It told us everything we needed to know about who in that relationship.
00:35:15
Jennifer was the one-- she was the boss. [TENSE MUSIC] She was telling Darrin, hey, I need
00:35:23
you to remove the-- the decal off of the truck. Let me know when you get it done.
00:35:30
So he texts back, OK. It's done. - It is becoming more and more apparent that there is a manipulation scheme afoot, that Jennifer
00:35:44
is feeding Darrin this information to possibly entice him or to convince him to kill Mr. Faith.
00:35:56
DET. ERIC BARNES: We did a financial snapshot of Darrin just to figure out what was his financial outlook.
00:36:04
He was several months behind on his mortgage and his home was going through foreclosure,
00:36:11
so he was at a very desperate place financially. Once we looked into Jennifer's bank accounts,
00:36:17
we saw that she had made several transfers to Darrin. Also, she had provided him with the credit card that had
00:36:25
a $40,000 credit limit that she paid off, so it had a zero balance. So Jennifer had more than just an emotional involvement
00:36:35
in this case. She also was the brains behind a lot of things. She directed Darrin how to not get caught.
00:36:42
She also was financially supporting him. So if he did get caught, now he has an allegiance to her.
00:36:49
So I felt like it was a whole lot of, like, mental manipulation going on. [OMINOUS MUSIC]
00:36:56
NARRATOR: With these texts, it's enough evidence to arrest Jennifer. DET. ERIC BARNES: We went early one morning
00:37:06
and knocked on her front door. ANDREW CHERAMIE: We immediately placed her in handcuffs.
00:37:11
She, um, acted been surprised and asked what we were doing there, why she was being arrested.
00:37:19
And I said, you're being arrested because you were involved in killing your husband.
00:37:24
And she gave me just a deadpan look and said, I had nothing to do with killing Jamie.
00:37:32
DET. ERIC BARNES: We don't have the evidence to charge her with murder, but we believe that she definitely
00:37:36
was the reason ultimately behind Darrin moving to decal from the vehicle. So we charged her with tampering with evidence.
00:37:44
NARRATOR: Jennifer is taken into custody. Meanwhile, the police and DA, who've
00:37:51
been building the case against Lopez, get the forensic results on his gun. - Fortunately for us, we get a ballistic match,
00:38:03
essentially telling us that the firearm is, in fact, the same firearm that was used to commit the murder.
00:38:14
In addition to that, and sort of the icing on the cake is that a DNA swab is taken of the frame,
00:38:21
and that smudge of blood that was recovered from the frame of the firearm matches Jamie Faith's DNA.
00:38:32
Not only does it prove that that firearm was used to commit the murder, it shows
00:38:38
what close proximity Mr. Lopez was to Mr. Faith when he shot him, that the victim's blood splashed
00:38:48
back and got on the firearm. DET. ERIC BARNES: Without a doubt, this is the gun used in a murder in Dallas.
00:38:57
Darrin is our killer. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] NARRATOR: While the case against Lopez is strong, for now, all detectives
00:39:06
have against Jennifer is that she tampered with evidence. NICK BARREIRO: The actions on the screen
00:39:12
are-- they appear unremarkable at first. There is a couple that appears to be going out to walk the dog.
00:39:21
I just want to get a better look at this video as they walk away from the door. To me, it looks like he's almost
00:39:29
trying to catch up to her, and she's not really waiting for him. She's not intending to just be walking next to him.
00:39:41
She doesn't-- doesn't turn around to see where he is. She just keeps walking and he appears to be
00:39:46
trying to catch up to her. Once we know what's coming, that her boyfriend is
00:39:54
about to murder this man, then it starts to make sense why she would be distancing herself from him right before this happens.
00:40:07
NARRATOR: The investigation takes another extraordinary turn when Detective Barnes
00:40:14
is contacted by Jennifer's previous husband. DET. ERIC BARNES: What he told us was that Jennifer tried
00:40:21
to hire him to enlist him to kill someone for her several years prior to this. Jennifer gave him this story about her being sexually
00:40:32
assaulted by a guy, and it was so graphic and just cold and brutal that he was so upset that he actually was, you know,
00:40:44
thinking about committing a murder for her. But, you know, his sense kicked in and he decided not to do it.
00:40:51
And so when he heard about the narrative with Jamie and with Darrin, it reminded him
00:40:58
of his past encounter with her. - I think my initial reaction was, you gotta be kidding me.
00:41:07
NARRATOR: The forensic report comes in on the sexually explicit emails, supposedly from Jamie
00:41:15
to Lopez. - When they dug into those a little bit more to find out exactly who sent them,
00:41:23
and that's when they found out they did not come from Jamie, they came from Jennifer.
00:41:27
NARRATOR: Jennifer is charged with arranging the hit on her husband. - When Jennifer then was-- was charged with--
00:41:37
in connection with a murder for hire, being behind her own husband's murder,
00:41:43
with seemingly no reason for wanting to do this, the-- the community just-- there were shock waves of horror
00:41:54
and surprise and disbelief. It just, it had a huge impact and people could not believe it.
00:42:04
It was betrayal upon betrayal. - Before the judge gave her a sentence, as Jennifer
00:42:11
approached, she was doing the whole crying, upset tears, snot running down her face, and the judge told her
00:42:19
she could stop the act, that she was past the point of someone believing that she was sorry about anything that happened.
00:42:28
- Judge Boyle said, basically, uh, you're pure evil and also disgusting. And that is not what you want to hear from a judge
00:42:38
when you're about to be sentenced. NARRATOR: Jennifer is given life behind bars.
00:42:46
- There wasn't any emotion after that, and she was led away by the marshals,
00:42:51
shuffled away in chains, and that was it. To this day, I still rack my brain with trying to think up, like, you know, a reason
00:43:02
for-- for wanting to do this. She didn't have to worry about finances. They are financially independent.
00:43:10
You know, I sometimes wonder know, yeah, could she have just been bored? I don't think she was ever serious about having
00:43:24
a life with Darrin. That seemed to be complete artifice. She was very coldly and calculatingly using him.
00:43:33
[OMINOUS MUSIC] DET. ERIC BARNES: I believe for Jennifer, this all was a game. She found the right person that was suffering
00:43:42
from a mental illness and traumatic brain injury, and that she knew how-- exactly how to push his buttons
00:43:50
to get him to kill. - She is a disturbed individual, and maybe it was just for the hell of it
00:43:58
to see if she could get away with it, to see if she could have that sort of control over someone
00:44:06
to make him do what she wanted him to do. I have no sympathy for Jennifer Faith whatsoever.
00:44:15
She got what she deserved and she'll die in prison. NARRATOR: When Darrin Lopez goes to trial,
00:44:21
he pleads not guilty. - I mean, the prosecutor said that she weaponized Darrin Lopez.
00:44:28
She knew which buttons to press, what would get him riled up. He was, in a sense, a victim, just like Jamie.
00:44:37
He-- he fought in combat. He suffered a terrible injury. His life is falling apart, and now he--
00:44:44
he meets this old flame and his spirits are high, and he thinks it'll lift him out of his depression.
00:44:51
And then he finds out she's been manipulating him all along. And-- and now he's facing the-- the loss of his freedom,
00:44:59
spending the rest of his life behind bars. NARRATOR: Darrin Lopez is found guilty of murdering Jamie Faith
00:45:07
and sentenced to 62 years. - When Jamie died, there was a life insurance policy as well
00:45:13
as his retirement fund over $1 million, and that entire estate was to be inherited by his daughter.
00:45:26
Jennifer asked her daughter if she could put aside $200,000 for her prison account, which you use to buy toiletries,
00:45:35
snacks, things like that. And, you know, here she is, like, having admitted to taking Amber's father from her
00:45:45
so cruelly and-- and she's asking her, oh, some of this money that you're supposed to inherit from Jamie,
00:45:52
by the way, I need $200,000 of it so I can live in comfort in prison. [SOFT PIANO MUSIC]
00:45:58
DET. ERIC BARNES: Darrin, we saw what he was capable of doing as a killer. But I think the most dangerous people are
00:46:04
the ones that can influence others to kill for them, and that was Jennifer. Jennifer 100% is a cold-blooded killer.
00:46:13
ANDREW CHERAMIE: In my 24 years in law enforcement, this was the most bizarre investigation
00:46:20
that have ever been a part of. It's truly in my entire law enforcement career, nothing
00:46:27
like I have ever seen. [THEME MUSIC] [AUDIO LOGO]
