Unsolved Mysteries with Robert Stack - Season 10, Episode 7 - Updated Full Episode

March 16, 2022 / 48:51

This episode of Unsolved Mysteries covers the tragic death of six-year-old Katherine Corzilius, the criminal exploits of cat burglar Alan Golder, and the controversial Bible Code.

The episode begins with the story of Katherine Corzilius, who disappeared while walking home in Austin, Texas. Her mother, Nancy, recounts the day Katherine went missing and the subsequent discovery of her body. Investigators question whether Katherine was a victim of foul play rather than a hit-and-run, leading to theories of abduction.

Next, the episode shifts to Alan Golder, a notorious cat burglar who has stolen over $30 million worth of jewelry. Golder's criminal career began in childhood, and he became known as the 'dinnertime bandit' for robbing homes while owners were present. Authorities are seeking help to capture him as he resumes his criminal activities.

The episode also discusses the Bible Code, a theory proposed by journalist Michael Drosnin, suggesting that the Bible contains hidden messages predicting significant historical events. Drosnin claims that various disasters and assassinations were foretold in the text.

Finally, the episode touches on the disappearance of baby Sabrina Eisenberg, whose parents became suspects in her case. The Eisenbergs maintain their innocence, but the investigation raises questions about their involvement.

TLDR

Katherine Corzilius's tragic death, Alan Golder's burglaries, and the Bible Code predictions are featured in this episode.

00:00:00
Tonight on Unsolved Mysteries. For six-year-old Katherine Corzilius, it was just a short walk home. But
00:00:16
something terrible happened on the way. Now, the mystery of Catherine's tragic
00:00:20
death and her past desperate search for answers has been chronicled in a song by
00:00:25
family friend and rock artist John Banji. His life of crime began when he was just 6
00:00:32
years old. Now he's considered the best cat burglar in America, and he has relieved his wealthy victims of $30
00:00:39
million. Beware of the dinnertime bandit, the Gulf War, the Oklahoma City bombing,
00:00:48
the earthquake in Kobe, Japan. According to the best-selling book, The Bible Code, these events and many others were
00:00:55
predicted nearly 3,000 years ago. Does the ancient text of the Bible contain a secret code that charts the
00:01:02
history of mankind? You'll meet a young mother who says she needs your help. Several years ago, her
00:01:10
5-month-old baby vanished. Now, police believe it was foul play and she may be the key suspect.
00:01:17
When the police sit across from you and say, "We believe you know where your
00:01:21
daughter is and we believe you know who has her," there's a good reason to get
00:01:25
an attorney. Join me for these intriguing stories and more. Perhaps you may be able to help
00:01:33
solve the mystery. [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] Even though she was just 6 years old,
00:02:24
Katherine Croilia seemed to be leading a charmed life. She lived in an upscale neighborhood
00:02:30
outside Austin, Texas with her parents Nancy and Paul and her brother Chris. Her father was a personal manager for
00:02:38
rockstar John Bonjovi. The two families were close and often vacation together. When Catherine had her first piano
00:02:48
recital in December of 1995, no one could have imagined that she would never live to see the first grade
00:02:55
and that her death would become a tragic unsolved mystery memorialized by her father's old friend John Bonjodi.
00:03:04
[Music] Tell me it was just a dream. August 7, 4:15. That's when Nancy and Paul Croilius's
00:03:19
world came crashing down. August 7th, 1996 was Paul Corilius's birthday. He was working at his office
00:03:31
in New York City. Nancy and the kids had spent the day running errands around Austin, picking out a gift for him.
00:03:39
You know, I think dad's really going to like his present. I think he will, too. Hey, Chris.
00:03:45
Catherine, settle down. We had been very busy as usual, making doing some shopping and taking in some
00:03:51
uh lunch and some appointments. It was extremely hot. It uh was very quiet here in our
00:03:59
neighborhood as it usually is. In fact, I I can remark that it it was exceptionally quiet that day.
00:04:06
On the way home, they stopped at the community mailbox to pick up the mail. It was a ritual Catherine looked forward
00:04:12
to. Nancy knew what would happen next. Mommy, may I walk home? Sure. I'll see you when you get there.
00:04:22
Okay. It was Catherine's way of saying she was a big girl. I allowed Catherine to do that because I
00:04:30
knew she was ready to be more independent and she had done it before. Nancy and Chris drove home in the
00:04:36
direction the car was already facing. Catherine went in the opposite direction, the shorter way home.
00:04:45
The Corselius family lives here on Elder Circle. The community mailboxes are located here. Nancy and Chris drove home
00:04:53
in this direction. Catherine apparently followed this route. Both of my children had walked home
00:05:00
together and separately from the mailboxes. It's a short walk, probably less than a quarter of a mile.
00:05:12
When Chris and I got home, we unloaded our car and started putting our packages away.
00:05:17
Mom, what? Catherine's not back. She probably just stopped somewhere along the way. Go back up on the road
00:05:23
and see if you can find her. All right. He came back in just a very short period
00:05:29
of time, a few minutes, and he was crying and he said, "She's not there,
00:05:33
Mom." We got in the car and drove right next door to our neighbors. I ran down
00:05:38
the steps to their front door, knocked on the door. Their son answered. [Applause]
00:05:44
Hi. Is Katherine here? No, ma'am. She hasn't been by here at all. I believe uh at that moment, Chris and I
00:05:52
knew that something terrible had happened. Nancy would find out how terrible just
00:06:00
minutes later. I could tell that she was unconscious, but she was breathing. And I knew it was
00:06:19
too hot to leave her on the pavement. I know that it's never a good idea to move somebody if you don't know what
00:06:28
their injuries are, but I just couldn't leave her there. And I think having driven her to the emergency before,
00:06:35
knowing the way very well, I felt confident that I was able to to drive that drive.
00:06:42
Katherine Corilius had suffered a fractured skull. She never regained consciousness.
00:06:49
Catherine was on a ventilator to keep her breathing, but she was brain dead. It wasn't a matter of her being in a
00:06:57
coma or being unconscious. Uh, her brain had died. I arranged for a charter aircraft so I
00:07:05
could come directly home, but in the end it was too late anyway. I arrived at 12:30 in the morning and I believe she
00:07:12
was pronounced dead at 11:30 that night, the hour before my arrival. From the start, everyone assumed that
00:07:22
Katherine Cosilius was a victim of a hit and run. But even as a police searched for a driver, a disturbing question
00:07:28
surfaced. How did Catherine end up in the spot where she was found? Catherine was last seen headed in this
00:07:36
direction. Less than 10 minutes later, she was found here on the opposite side of the circle half a mile away.
00:07:45
The extent of her injuries were such that she didn't take a step after she received the injury and the point that
00:07:52
her body was found on Elder Circle is not on the path that she walked from the mailbox to the house.
00:07:59
No one could explain it and the medical examiner's report would only deepen the
00:08:04
mystery. He determined that Katherine had not died from a hitand-run accident. In addition to the head injury, he found
00:08:12
abrasions on Catherine's left shoulder, the small of her back, on her right hip,
00:08:18
and on both knees. What could have caused them? The injuries that Katherine sustained
00:08:24
could have been the result of either uh jumping from a moving vehicle, uh being thrown from a moving vehicle or falling
00:08:32
from a moving vehicle. The type of injuries that we expect expect in these circumstances would have been the same.
00:08:41
If Catherine did tumble from a moving vehicle, whose vehicle was it? And was she pushed or did she fall?
00:08:50
One of the theories that investigators proposed was that indeed somehow Catherine had jumped on the back of our
00:08:56
vehicle without NY's knowledge. And uh as the vehicle drove around Elder Circle, she had fallen off, which was uh
00:09:04
a way to explain where she was found in Elder Circle, which is completely opposite of where she would have been on
00:09:10
her normal route. The Corilius family was stunned. Was it possible that Nancy was responsible for
00:09:19
her daughter's death? The Corilius has hired their own private investigator, Barbara O'Brien.
00:09:25
She has difficulty with a police scenario. Now, the problem with that is it's a hot
00:09:31
August day. This whole car would have been very, very hot. There's only one place to hold on to all the way up here.
00:09:38
And the door is the only other place down here to hold on to, and it opens when you get a hold of it. She also had
00:09:47
a broken left thumb, and she had a splint on her thumb. So, it would have been extremely difficult for her to get
00:09:54
a hold on anything. and her mother would have seen her in the rearview mirror. For the Croilius family, the implication
00:10:04
is clear. They believe their daughter was abducted and murdered. A search of a vacant overgrown lot just
00:10:12
30 yards from the mailboxes may have provided a crucial clue. A few days after Katherine's uh death,
00:10:21
the investigators did bring in the K-9 unit and search the area. They did pick up her scent over in this vacant lot,
00:10:31
which would indicate that she was coming in this direction from the mailboxes, taking the most direct route home. The
00:10:38
scent was lost, however, which tells us that this may have been the point where she was abducted or the injury took
00:10:46
place, but she was then later moved where she was found by her mother. She looked like she'd been laid out
00:10:53
there for me to find. Her hair was smoothed down, her shirt was straight, her shorts were straight, her toes were
00:11:03
pointed straight, her sandals were on. I know someone moved her and I know someone laid her there for me to find.
00:11:12
What did happen to Katherine Corsilius at August afternoon? A year after her death, Catherine lives on in memories.
00:11:20
Her neighbors on Elder Circle have planted a tree and placed a plaque in her name.
00:11:26
Oh no. Oh no. Tell me it was just a dream. August 7,5 [Music] I think if Paul and Nancy's parents knew
00:11:53
how it happened, perhaps it could help them with the closure of this tragic event. Nothing that anyone can say or do
00:12:02
is ever going to bring their daughter back to them. But it's twice as hard not
00:12:07
knowing what happened. I think of uh families of people who are missing an action. Well, they're not
00:12:16
here, but what happened to them? And that's exactly to a certain extent how I
00:12:21
feel about our daughter. I had Catherine's body, but something happened in the last 15 minutes of her life that
00:12:28
I I don't know what that was. He's charming and attractive and maybe out to steal your jewels. Have you seen
00:12:42
Alan Golder? [Music] He looks like just another tourist. He rides tour buses to see the homes of the
00:12:54
rich and famous. He admires the finer things in life, especially if they belong to someone else. His name is Alan
00:13:01
Golder, and his prior profession was jewel thief. Police believe he's at it again. During
00:13:09
the daytime, he cases fashionable neighborhoods, so at night he can find the perfect moment to strike. While he's
00:13:16
upstairs, the owners of the home are downstairs having dinner. Allan is very good at what he does. He gets a thrill
00:13:23
out of what he does. He has no other goal in life other than to be the best jewel thief that he can be.
00:13:32
42year-old Alan Golder was arguably the best cat burglar in the United States. From 1976 to 1980, Golder made millions
00:13:40
stealing jewelry. He was caught and served 15 years in prison. But since his release in 1996, Golder may have
00:13:47
reclaimed his title as a dinnertime bandit. Police are seeking your help to catch a thief.
00:13:56
Golder's life of crime began early at the age of six. He grew up poor in Long
00:14:02
Island, New York. His father, a career criminal, had abandoned the family when Allan was
00:14:10
three. At 16, Golder dropped out of high school. Even at that young age, he was earning anywhere from a few hundred to
00:14:21
several thousand dollar a night by stealing. At 21, Alan Golder had found his niche,
00:14:32
burglarizing the homes of wealthy people in Greenwich, Connecticut. He thinks he is today's answer to the
00:14:39
Pink Panther. He's in it for the thrill that he gets out of it. As I think about
00:14:44
things now, in some ways, I'm amazed that Allan hasn't come forward just
00:14:48
because he's missing all these wonderful opportunities to be interviewed by different TV shows. Between 1976 and
00:14:54
1980, Alan Golder has some very good years. It's estimated that he stole at least
00:15:02
$25 million worth of jewels and gems from the richest people in America. When you think about the crimes that he
00:15:10
committed, the ordinary person would have said, "Well, with as much money as
00:15:14
he's gotten, why didn't he stop?" It was like an art for him. And in another way,
00:15:20
it was almost compulsive for him, as if he's suffering from some sort of compulsive disorder.
00:15:28
Golder's reputation caught the attention of the mob. It happened when he tried to
00:15:33
fence some stolen jewelry at a shop in New York. What it turns out is that this particular jewel store was a front for
00:15:40
the Genevvisi family's uh international jewel fencing operation. So being 19 years old or whatever he was at
00:15:48
the time, he didn't really know what he was getting into at that point. He was
00:15:51
just trying to sell some jewels. But what he did was he was in in fact getting in bed with the mafia.
00:15:57
The mob liked Golder's ambition and took him under their wing. They wanted to change him into an
00:16:04
international jewel thief. He would go meet them in New York and he would hang out with them and they would
00:16:10
take him out to restaurants. It was sort of a pyon thing that went on. I mean, they sort of groomed him for the
00:16:16
business. You have to look for the three C's in a diamond. The color, the cut,
00:16:20
and the clarity. Don't pick me up diamonds from from a box on top of the dresser. These are never good. Nobody
00:16:27
keeps expensive diamonds on top of the dresser. Very closely. But it was his relationship with the
00:16:31
mafia that would lead to Golders's downfall. In 1978, Golder was being pressured to
00:16:39
bring in more jewelry. He and two other mafia jewel thieves were instructed to hit a home in the
00:16:46
Hamptons. It's believed that Golder never carried a weapon, but one of his accompllices
00:16:54
did. Allan claims he never even saw the guy. that happened in another room, another
00:16:59
part of the house. And they didn't know if they had killed him or not, but they
00:17:03
found out the next day that the man died. Alan Golder's life spun out of control.
00:17:10
He was doing drugs and going through money like water. Eventually, he was caught.
00:17:18
Facing a murder charge, he looked for a way to reduce his sentence. Now, you know that we got you at the
00:17:24
lever estate two times previous that we know of. Now, I need you to tell me specific names and specific numbers
00:17:31
right there on that piece of paper. All right. In exchange for selling out the mob,
00:17:38
Golder was given a sentence of 15 years to life. You can assume that there was a contract
00:17:43
out on his life. He became a an official protective witness. And when he was in the entire time he was in prison, he
00:17:48
was, you know, basically in protective custody in prison. He did wasn't housed
00:17:52
with the regular inmates. He was housed with guys that were special cases that they had to watch out for so that he
00:17:57
wouldn't be killed. But according to authorities, while in prison, Golder continued to sip through
00:18:03
magazines profiling the homes of the wealthy. Following his parole in 1996, he tried
00:18:10
to go straight, or so he said. He even had a job in mind, working as a chimney sweep. I explained to him there are
00:18:20
certain employment positions that you because of your conviction and your criminal history you cannot work and
00:18:29
entering into people's homes to clean chimneys is one of them. Then after that
00:18:34
he had considered pursuing school. We had talked at length as to what sort of careers he could choose but he was sort
00:18:42
of set on going to a gemology school. He wanted to study gems. Not long after, police had another rash
00:18:51
of high-profile burglaries on their hands. But Alan Golder was not a suspect at the time.
00:18:58
But in October 1997 in Greenwich, Connecticut, police believe Golder pushed his luck a bit too far.
00:19:10
[Music] Oh my god. talk about. He allegedly was forced to tie up a homeowner and fled in her car.
00:19:23
[Music] Now, police believe the dinnertime bandit was back in business. Alan Golder
00:19:29
apparently went underground. We can confirm that in Greenwich, um, in 23 incidents of burglary, attempted
00:19:40
burglaries, Allen succeeded in removing over $750,000 worth of jewelry from the houses that he hid here. In his career,
00:19:48
Golder has stolen more than $30 million worth of jewelry, and police believe he has no intention of stopping.
00:19:56
Alan Golder is wanted on 23 counts of burglary and one count of kidnapping. [Music]
00:20:17
coming up. Some say there are codes in the Bible that predict major world events. You decide if it's true.
00:20:26
[Music] The Bible. For centuries, mankind has pondered its mysteries. For many, it's
00:20:36
the word of God. But journalist Michael Drazen is convinced that the Bible may hold still other mysteries. His
00:20:43
controversial book, The Bible Code, hit the bestseller list soon after its publication in early 1997.
00:20:50
Drazzen claimed that there is a secret code within the Bible. a code that has predicted the most important events of
00:20:56
the 20th century. Here are some examples. The greatest terrorist event in American
00:21:04
history, the Oklahoma City bombing was encoded with the world's terrible, frightening death, and there will be
00:21:10
terror. The great Coobe earthquake in Japan that killed more than 5,000 people was
00:21:18
encoded with the words earthquake fire, Coobe, Japan, and the year that it took place, 1995.
00:21:28
The Gulf War is encoded with the words Hussein, enemy, scuds. Ever since there was a Bible, people
00:21:41
have been searching for secret hidden messages in the Bible. I can tell you that there is no doubt that the Bible
00:21:50
code does exist and that it does detail events that took place thousands of years after the Bible was written.
00:22:05
In September of 1994, Michael Dzn persuaded an intermediary to hand a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Yitsak
00:22:13
Rabbine. Mr. Prime Minister, an Israeli mathematician has discovered a hidden code in the Bible. The only time your
00:22:22
full name, Yak Rabin, is encoded in the Bible, the words assassin that will assassinate cross your name. That should
00:22:33
not be ignored. I think you are in real danger, but that the danger can be averted.
00:22:50
14 months later, Prime Minister Yitsak Rabin spoke at a peace rally in Tel Aviv.
00:22:58
It was the last speech Rabbine would ever give. As he left the podium that night, he was gunned down by an
00:23:04
assassin. Is it possible that this event was foretold nearly 3,000 years ago? The Torah. It is said to be the word of
00:23:17
God brought down from Mount Si by Moses and incorporating the first five books of the Old Testament. Hebrew scholars
00:23:25
maintain that the Torah predates the birth of Christ. [Music] Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1938.
00:23:34
Rabbi HMD Viceman discovered the first known example of Bible coding in the modern era.
00:23:41
The word Torah was spelled out when he skipped every 50 letters in the book of Genesis.
00:23:48
Skipping the same number of letters in the books of Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy brought the same result.
00:23:54
Coincidence? The odds were against it. [Music] Over the next 50 years, advances in
00:24:03
computer technology led to the next major breakthrough in cracking the Bible code.
00:24:08
Israeli scientists Doron Witdom and Eli Yahu Rips became intrigued by Vice Mandal's work. They used a computer
00:24:16
program called a skip code to find words and patterns in the Hebrew text of the Torah. A skip code tells a computer to
00:24:24
start with any letter of a text and then skip through the letters at chosen intervals. In his book, Michael Drosen
00:24:31
uses this example to show how it works. If you skip every three letters of this sentence, it would look like this. You
00:24:39
are left with a new sentence. In this case, the encoded message is read the code.
00:24:46
The Israeli mathematicians ran a skip code searching for the names of 34 prominent Jewish rabbis spanning the
00:24:52
last 1100 years. Amazingly, all the names were found embedded in the book of Genesis. When the computer found the
00:25:01
encoded names of the rabbis, it also found nearby their Hebrew dates of birth or death.
00:25:07
The scientists ran the search again with a new list of rabbis. The results were the same. According to Michael Drazn,
00:25:15
the odds of finding the dates with the names were 10 million to one. When these findings were published, they
00:25:23
aroused the attention of researchers around the world, including Harold Gans. Gans is a former senior cryptologic
00:25:30
mathematician, a codereaker at the US Department of Defense. Uh, when I first heard about it, I
00:25:37
dismissed it as simply ridiculous. Gans wrote his own computer program to test the validity of the code and had
00:25:45
identical results. Then in close proximity to the rabbis, one of whom was a distant relative, he found the encoded
00:25:52
names of cities. He later learned that these were the same cities where the rabbis had either
00:25:58
been born or died. The odds here were more than a million to one. I set out to prove that it was nonsense.
00:26:07
Instead, I ended up proving that in fact it was true. I must admit, I felt a chill go up my spine when I when I saw
00:26:12
it corroborated. Journalist Michael Drosen took the research a step further. Using the
00:26:19
existing skip code programs, he searched for the names of historical figures. The
00:26:24
results were tantalizing, but not entirely convincing at first. I did not fully believe the Bible code
00:26:34
was real until the day that Yakraine was assassinated. The one time his name appeared in the
00:26:44
Bible, the words assassin will assassinate ran right across his name. Drosen embarked on his own ambitious
00:26:53
research into the mysteries of the Bible code. He now included a wide range of history's most important personalities
00:27:00
and pivotal events. If Dzen is correct, everything that follows was predicted nearly 3,000 years ago.
00:27:09
According to Drosen, Adolf Hitler is encoded with the words Nazi and enemy, evil man, and slaughter.
00:27:20
Pearl Harbor is encoded with the words destruction of the fortress, World War, and December 7th.
00:27:28
According to Drosdn, Watergate is encoded with Nixon. And who is he? President, but he was kicked out.
00:27:37
In the case of the Oklahoma City bombing, Drozen claims a code is surprisingly accurate. He says it
00:27:43
includes the name of the building that was blown up, the Mura building. the date and time of the attack
00:27:50
and even the name of the man convicted of the crime, Timothy McVey. But not everything in the code is gloom
00:27:58
and doom. Drosna notes that Shakespeare is encoded with McBth and Hamlet. The Wright brothers are encoded with
00:28:06
airplane and the phrase man on the moon appears with spaceship and Apollo 11. But there are those who questioned
00:28:17
Rosn's claims. Humans are pattern-seeking animals. We look for cause and effect relationships
00:28:25
in our environment, meaningful ones. Michael Shurmer is a publisher of Skeptic magazine. He believes a Bible
00:28:32
code is an example of self-fulfilling prophecy. The Bible code is nothing more than a
00:28:39
form of seek and you shall find. Whether you're using the Bible or the dictionary, the yellow pages, some other
00:28:45
novels. All you need is a long string of uh letters and then you can run your computer skip code sequence program and
00:28:53
come up with all kinds of things. Michael Drazen disagrees. He says he ran the skip code program on several books,
00:29:00
including Toltoy's epic novel War in Peace. He claims he found nothing of significance.
00:29:07
Drosen is convinced that the secret code is exclusive to the Bible. Every major figure in world history I
00:29:14
have looked for, every major event in world history I have looked for has been encoded accurately in remarkable detail
00:29:24
in the Bible. To date, Drosen says he has uncovered hundreds of encoded references to
00:29:30
historical persons and events. What then are we to make of the dire predictions he believes a Bible code
00:29:37
makes for our future? The most terrible warning that's encoded in the Bible is of a possible nuclear
00:29:47
world war within the next 10 years. The words world war and atomic holocaust are both encoded in the Bible with the
00:29:58
same two years, the years 2000 and 2006. I'm not calling that a prediction, but a warning. That's what I think the
00:30:10
Bible code really is, a series of warnings of dangers we can prevent if we take the warnings seriously. Well,
00:30:20
now wait a minute. You can't prophesize the end will come, the end might not
00:30:25
come, the end might be delayed, or the end might not come at all. You've now
00:30:29
made all possible predictions, which is no prediction at all. That's not prophecy.
00:30:34
The Bible code, as far as I'm concerned, does not predict anything. It warns us
00:30:41
of possible dangers. It doesn't give us one predetermined future, but all of our
00:30:47
possible futures. Mr. Drosdn is a journalist. He is reporting on a very complex mathematical
00:30:55
work of world-renowned mathematicians. He has not used scientific methodology and his actual conclusions are logically
00:31:03
unound. It is far better in my mind to sound a false warning than to fail to warn of a
00:31:13
real danger. People sometimes say to me, "Where's the good news in the Bible code? Why all
00:31:21
these predictions of terrible catastrophes?" And I say, "The good news is that some
00:31:29
intelligence cared enough about us to encode the Bible and leave us these warnings so that these dangers could in
00:31:39
fact be prevented. Teenagers may run away. Toddlers may wander off. But if a baby disappears,
00:31:52
more often than not, foul play is involved. A couple in a suburb of Tampa, Florida,
00:31:57
claims someone took their baby, kidnapped her in the dead of night. Only one thing is certain. The baby is
00:32:05
missing. November 24th, 1997. Marlene Eisenberg says she got up shortly after 6:00 that morning and went
00:32:13
into the kitchen. And I noticed the laundry room door to the garage is opened and I'm like, "Wow,
00:32:22
what's that doing open?" And I just run to the first bedroom and I look in
00:32:28
Sabrina's crib and she was gone. And I was just like, you know, I was hysterical. Steve, you know, Sabrina's
00:32:34
missing. Sabrina's gone. Sabrina, Steve and Marlene Eisenberg's third child, barely 5 months old, had
00:32:42
vanished, taken from her own crib. The Eisenberg's home was now a crime scene.
00:32:50
This frightened a lot of people, terrified a lot of young parents. It was chilling for people who lived in that
00:32:56
community. It was a quiet, safe, out of the way place. And then a baby disappears.
00:33:06
How could a baby just disappear? The Eisenbergs had left their garage door open overnight. The interior door may
00:33:13
also have been left unlocked, but there were no clues about an intruder. Who took baby Sabrina?
00:33:21
Got some debris down here. Let's go ahead. Marlene Eisenberg says the investigation
00:33:25
suddenly took an unexpected turn. She and her husband became prime suspects. No forced entry, no ransom note. We
00:33:35
think you had something to do with the disappearance of Sabrina. Why don't you just tell us where Sabrina
00:33:42
is? To me, it was the most unbelievable thing I could have ever heard. And you know, I was like, I have no idea where
00:33:49
Sabrina is. I have no idea who took her. That's why you're here. Help. You know,
00:33:55
find her. Deputies removed a number of items from the Eisenberg home, including Sabrina's
00:34:02
crib and bedding. They were sent to the FBI lab at Quantico for analysis. As a search for baby Sabrina continued,
00:34:12
the Eisenbergs taped a public appeal pleading for her return. This morning, someone came into our home
00:34:20
and took our baby Sabrina Page out of her crib. The plea might have inspired sympathy for the Eisenbergs. It did not.
00:34:29
Some people felt they were guilty of something. Some people felt that they were involved in some way in Sabrina's
00:34:35
disappearance. The day after Sabrina vanished, the media taped the Eisenberg smiling as
00:34:41
they left their home. Public opinion counted it as another strike against them. A lot of people in the community saw
00:34:50
that clip and saw Steve smile and they saw Marlene with a quick flash of a smile and they jumped to conclusions.
00:34:57
They said, "Why would these people be smiling? There must be something wrong
00:35:01
here." Are you withholding any information? The Eisenbergs voluntarily took a
00:35:05
polygraph test. Did you help take your daughter from your home that night? No. Do you have any knowledge of your
00:35:13
daughter's current location? No. In Marlene's case, the results are a matter of debate.
00:35:18
Did you help? They told me it was inconclusive and they told me that they expected it to be
00:35:22
that because I was hysterical and you know everything and uh my baby's gone and you know they would expect that.
00:35:32
Are you lying about your daughter's disappearance? The sheriff's office insists Marlene
00:35:36
Eisenberg's polygraph results were not inconclusive, but officials won't say whether she
00:35:42
passed or failed. No, I don't give a damn about the Hillberg County Polygraph.
00:35:50
Shortly after Sabrina disappeared, the Eisenbergs hired an attorney. To some, it was another sign of their guilt. The
00:35:57
Eisenbergs say the police left them no choice. When the police sit across from you and
00:36:03
say, "We believe you know where your daughter is and we believe you know who
00:36:06
has her." There's a good reason to get an attorney. Months passed and still no trace of the
00:36:15
baby. The police held several press conferences fairly early on in the case and told the reporters that in fact they
00:36:23
had evidence and that we should just hang on, that they were processing the evidence and that it would be
00:36:28
forthcoming. Uh that was almost a year ago and I've not seen any of that evidence to date.
00:36:36
The police declined to comment on any evidence in this case, including the results of tests done in the FBI lab at
00:36:43
Quantico. Unfortunately, most of the leads bring us back to a dead end and that comes
00:36:49
brings us back to this community and we feel that the answers to this crime are within this community.
00:36:55
Our policy has always been that we don't list people as a suspect unless we have
00:37:00
enough to charge them. We have not ruled the Eisenbergs out. they um have failed
00:37:06
to assist us in some ways and it makes it more difficult to rule them out as a um having some involvement in the case.
00:37:16
The Eisenbergs continue to maintain Sabrina was kidnapped. I believe that somebody came into our
00:37:24
home and just took her. It had to be someone who wanted a baby so bad and they couldn't have one themselves or
00:37:32
they needed money so bad that they would want to sell her. It could be that somebody just watched
00:37:38
Marlene and I and and saw our habits of occasionally leaving the garage open, knew we had a baby, or it could have
00:37:45
been somebody that knew us casually and then through others knew our our habits. So it, you know, anything is
00:37:55
just pure speculation. Update. In September of 1999, a federal grand jury indicted Marlene and Steven
00:38:05
Eisenberg on charges of conspiracy and lying to investigators about the disappearance of Sabrina.
00:38:12
Two years later, a judge threw the indictment out by lambasting prosecutors for misrepresenting the strength of
00:38:18
their case. The US attorney has agreed to reimburse the Eisenbergs for the cost of their legal counsel.
00:38:27
[Music] 31-year-old Lee Carter Jr. was a kind of guy who always tried to do the right
00:38:47
thing. But on the morning of July 28th, 1993, it seems doing the right thing got Lee
00:38:58
Carter Jr. killed. A bomb placed under the seat of his Porsche, parked outside Carter's home,
00:39:05
ended his life instantly. For members of Carter's family, the loss has been unbearable.
00:39:11
There's been no closure of any kind. I wake up in the morning, he's the first
00:39:16
thing I think about. I go to bed at night. I'd say most of the time it's the
00:39:19
first thing I'm thinking about, the last thing I'm thinking about. Who would want to kill Lee Carter Jr.?
00:39:26
Police in Carter's upstate New York hometown have a suspect. They would like
00:39:30
your help in finding him. They believe he is a dangerous killer, a man they suspect is an enforcer for an outlaw
00:39:37
branch of the Hell's Angels motorcycle gang. The man's name is Rick Valley. And
00:39:43
if you happen to know him, be careful. [Music] In the early 1990s, police believe led
00:39:55
the angels in a battle for control of drugs and prostitution along the US Canadian border. Police alleged valley's
00:40:02
job was to kill people who double crossed the biker gang. Lee Carter Jr. had been approached by
00:40:10
associates of Rick Valley who wanted to use his home as a safe house. It is alleged that Valley and the gang
00:40:17
had plans to smuggle 54 kilos of cocaine from the United States into Canada. Carter's home was close to the border.
00:40:25
Disgusted. That's right. Carter went to the police and agreed to act as an informant. The drug deal was
00:40:31
quickly thwarted and Rick Valley was charged with conspiracy to import cocaine. My son didn't get into detail on it to
00:40:39
me at all. He did tell me he was working with the state police. He told me he was
00:40:43
helping him and I started to ask him what it was about and he said it best that I didn't get involved in it. That
00:40:52
what he was doing was with them and was on the up and up with the law. Before the case could go to trial, Lee
00:40:59
Carter Jr., the main witness, was eliminated. Police believe Rick Valley, a known
00:41:05
demolition's expert, planted the bomb that killed him. Rick Valley obviously made the decision
00:41:12
that if he took out the witness, had the witness killed, then there was nobody to
00:41:17
testify him against court, the drug charge would have to be dismissed, which in effect is what happened.
00:41:24
2 days after Carter's murder, with a star witness against him dead, the drug
00:41:29
charges against Rick Valley were dropped. [Music] Two years passed. During that time, New
00:41:38
York state and Canadian authorities gathered enough evidence to charge Valley with Carter's murder. Valley was
00:41:45
arrested in Canada and was awaiting extradition to the United States. While in custody, Rick Valley had his
00:41:52
jaw broken in a jail house fight. Over the next few weeks, he was treated at a local hospital where two guards
00:42:00
would always accompany him. During the course of his visit, he had uh consistently set up where he would
00:42:08
take a shower around 8:00. Uh at this particular point, uh he had been on the phone and indicated to one of the guards
00:42:16
that uh he would like the guard to wait there because he was waiting for an important phone call from uh his
00:42:23
attorney. Uh he then went to take a shower with the other guard. As the both of them entered the shower
00:42:30
room, uh the one guard was accosted. What took you out? With the help of an accomplice, Valley
00:42:38
escaped. It's the last time anyone has seen Rick Valley. My gut sense is that he's out of the
00:42:45
country uh and that he's gone someplace else and has probably established a new
00:42:49
identity. Obviously, we'd love to have somebody call us and tell us or Rick Valley is in this house right now having
00:42:55
dinner. Uh, and I can assure you that uh within moments uh we'd uh we'd be there
00:43:00
and uh get him into custody. When I think of uh Richard Valley, uh I think of an individual that thinks
00:43:10
nothing of taking life, thinks nothing of uh anyone else whatsoever. He is it and that's all. He has no values.
00:43:19
It would help considerably to know that at least the individual wasn't out there
00:43:25
living high in the hog while he has taken someone else's life. [Music] [Music]
00:43:56
Next, the hunt for an escape convict ends thanks to one of our viewers. [Music] On a previous broadcast, we asked for
00:44:11
your help in finding a ruthless killer who'd escaped from an Oklahoma prison.
00:44:15
Michael Wayne Brown was able to elude law enforcement authorities for over 15 years. But thanks to an unsolved
00:44:22
mysteries viewer, Brown is now back behind bars. When he was only 18, Michael Wayne Brown
00:44:34
and another teenager were in the middle of burglarizing an insurance office when
00:44:39
an employee stopped by to pick up a file. Give me the gun. Turn around. Brown was put on death row for murdering
00:44:54
Richard Sullivan. However, that sentence was later commuted to life without parole.
00:45:01
Michael Wayne Brown had served nine years in the Oklahoma state prison system when his luck began to change. A
00:45:07
lonely widow named Donna Moses began writing him letters as part of her church group's attempt to help convicts
00:45:13
find spiritual comfort. But these pen pals quickly became something more. She was lonely. She hadn't had anybody
00:45:21
for a very long time. and she needed that companionship, you know, someone someone, you know, to talk to her about
00:45:28
things and show her love and affection. And that's what she got from him. Do you, Michael Brown, pick this woman
00:45:34
to be your less than 3 months after meeting Brown, Donna Moses married him? I do.
00:45:40
In November of 1984, Brown was transferred to a minimum security prison. It was a perfect opportunity,
00:45:47
and he wasted little time. Michael Wayne Brown and another inmate jumped a 4-foot
00:45:53
fence and raced for freedom. Authorities believe that Donna Moses Brown drove the getaway car. Within a
00:46:00
year, the second convict was captured. For 15 years, authorities received numerous tips about the whereabouts of
00:46:07
Michael and Donna Brown. And then finally, one paid off. Update. In 1999, an alert unsolved
00:46:18
Mysteries viewer chanced upon a photograph from our website. I couldn't believe it. Um, it looked
00:46:24
like him, but my mind said it's not him, but the picture said it was him. Greg knew Donna and Michael Brown as
00:46:30
Linda and Kenneth Gter. The Genters owned a video store in the quiet suburb of Ketling, Ohio. In fact, Greg's wife
00:46:38
worked at the store. You'd never know he was a murderer. You would never know that. Um, like I say,
00:46:45
he was like an icon of the community. Everybody liked him. The kids would come in there and high-five him. He'd give
00:46:50
him candy and super nice guy. Coincidentally, about 15 minutes after spotting the photos on the Unsolved
00:46:57
Mysteries website, Greg received a phone call from Kenneth Gter. The phone rings and it was him and he
00:47:05
was asking my wife to work that night. I told him that I seen a guy on the computer that looked like him and I
00:47:10
said, "Michael Wayne Brown." and he kind of got quiet for a minute and he says,
00:47:13
"Well, Greg, everybody has a twin, so I left it at that." Realizing that he had been recognized,
00:47:19
Brown quietly dropped from sight. But knowing that the FBI was one step behind him, he turned himself in.
00:47:28
Brown is serving the remainder of his sentence at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in Mallister, Oklahoma.
00:47:34
Authorities view Donna Brown as a hless victim of her husband. She was never charged with any wrongdoing in
00:47:41
connection with Brown's escape. [Music] For every mystery, there is someone somewhere who knows a truth. Join me for
