The Heartbreaking Murder of Mitchell Jones Jr. | Killers Caught On Camera

June 28, 2024 / 46:52

This episode covers two murder cases: the homicide of Mitchell Jones Jr. in Marietta, Georgia, and the murder of CLA Abel White in Nottinghamshire, UK. Key discussions include the investigation details, evidence collection, and the suspects involved in both cases.

In the first case, Mitchell Jones Jr. was found severely injured in his bedroom, with multiple stab wounds. Detective Carrie Grimstead and her team worked to identify his killer after he succumbed to his injuries. They discovered that Mitchell had been in an abusive relationship and used geofence technology to track down suspect Dante Holmes, who was later arrested and confessed to the crime.

The second case involves CLA Abel White, who was brutally murdered in her home. Police found evidence through CCTV footage and shoe prints at the crime scene. The investigation led them to suspect John Jessup, who had been in a brief relationship with CLA. After confessing to the murder, he was sentenced to life in prison.

Both cases highlight the role of technology in solving crimes and the tragic outcomes of domestic violence. The episode emphasizes the importance of evidence collection and the emotional impact on the victims' families.

TLDR

Two murder cases reveal the tragic outcomes of domestic violence and the role of technology in solving crimes.

00:00:09
this time on Killers caught on camera cob County police in Atlanta Georgia a man is discovered in a pool of
00:00:19
blood in his own bedroom 3 die what happened is a mystery the bedroom was in disarray it was covered
00:00:29
in blood all over the walls and in the UK a woman is ambushed and killed in her own home this behavior
00:00:40
is very suspicious I think most of us would look at this behavior and think this is a really odd a brutal end to a
00:00:48
brief relationship just sounds like something bad is happening to her we know what
00:00:56
happened because the video tells us what happened I heard some gunshot drop it whatever it is drop it that does
00:01:03
not prove that I killed my wife the camera doesn't in the United States Marietta
00:01:16
Georgia 20 M Northeast of the state capital Atlanta in cob County a 911 dispatcher
00:01:26
received a disturbing call oh I can't I'm done okay tell me exactly what happened
00:01:35
sir tell me the address I'm dying sir I need to know where you are okay you said someone was still
00:01:43
there are they still there yes can you tell me if anybody has a weapon yes detective Sarah Penny was one of the
00:01:58
officers called to the scene I got the phone call and my supervisor at the time said we have a person who
00:02:05
may have been shot or stabbed and gave me the location when the police arrived the
00:02:12
front door was wide open car police car police we don't know if the person's
00:02:27
still there we don't know if they're holding hostage C County Police they needed to locate the collar
00:02:36
inside the property all right let's go out police make yourself know if you're
00:02:48
in the H the man was locked inside a room officers resorted to brute force and were met with a shocking scene
00:03:05
inside the bedroom victims of as he's been shot we got a lot of blood he was kind of in a corner
00:03:14
bleeding out and just saying help me help me uh he shot me where you shot St three
00:03:22
times shot you he was unable to identify his attacker go get that Neighbor Next over
00:03:31
here she know do you know who was in here with you yeah he took my cell phone the Medics arrived on scene and tried to
00:03:39
keep him [Music] alive sir as the medical team tried to stabilize him the police started to try
00:03:56
and work out what happened seeing the blood all over the wall and glass being cut they knew some
00:04:02
kind of struggle have happened uh so they were trying to absorb all that in looks like it happened here there's
00:04:09
blood at the door coming all way up the steps he was actually locked in here so we don't know if he came in
00:04:16
here the bedroom was in disarray it was covered in blood all over the walls bottles had been broken on the ground
00:04:24
everything had kind of been moved around in the room ready 1 2 3 badly injured the man was bleeding
00:04:33
heavily the neighbors had come outside to see what was going on is it oh God do you know him well or I'm know him
00:04:45
very well what's his name Mitchell Mitchell yes 31-year-old Mitchell Jones Jr had
00:04:57
moved from Erie Pennsylvania to Atlanta Georgia in search of a better [Music] life he worked at a local restaurant
00:05:07
that was nearby his house he was the life of the party everybody loved being around him he was sweet he liked to hang
00:05:14
out with dogs and adopt them and he was in the process of wanting to make it to the big screen and work for
00:05:22
Hollywood he had been an extra in several movies uh where he really took pride in that so his big dream was to
00:05:30
make it to [Music] Hollywood but Mitchell's dreams were shattered as he succumbed to his
00:05:43
multiple injuries this was now a murder case the police needed to catch Mitchell's
00:05:57
killer detective Carrie grimstead was the lead investigator any investigation but
00:06:04
particularly homicide the longer it goes the colder the evidence gets what the hell is
00:06:12
that one thing leads to another you need to follow that up follow that up follow
00:06:17
that up there's a little bit of blood in the doorway the faster we can act on the
00:06:23
evidence the fresher it is the better the evidence is going to be [Music] Jesse Evans was leading the major crimes
00:06:32
unit at the District Attorney's office we knew who the victim was uh we knew that his cell phone had been taken
00:06:39
from him we knew that this was a particularly violent assault but we didn't have a whole lot
00:06:45
of details that we could glean from him before his passing about who might have caused these injuries to him or how this
00:06:51
may have occurred the only things he did say was my neighbor knows she could tell us that Mitchell called
00:07:04
her that night told her that he had to come home and she has seen couple people come in and out of the house um and only
00:07:11
knew one person really that kind of stood out to her you saw him with another man at
00:07:18
for and she said that if anybody could have hurt Mitchell it would have been that boy that's what everybody described
00:07:24
him and called him that boy young female J she's saying other guy was with this
00:07:30
guy and that's gay from what she's saying and that uh this car has been here a
00:07:35
lot police started to look for the suspect crime scene investigators worked their way through the
00:07:44
property I am a certified blood stain pattered analyst so I was analyzing what types of blood smears there were or
00:07:53
stains there were there was passive blood spatter there was pooling spatter most of what was on the wall walls were
00:08:00
what we call contact transfer where a bloody object makes contact with a non- bloody surface so that being said I
00:08:08
didn't see any impact spatter or anything like that that would come from a possible
00:08:15
firearm one of the critical pieces of evidence that police identified very early on which is very significant to us
00:08:22
was a 90° blood drop that was at the threshold of this crime scene at the door clearly out of place detectives had
00:08:29
the foresight to say that's out of place we need to swab that we knew for one that wasn't Mell
00:08:37
Jones because he didn't leave the room until he was transported by medical personnel so we knew that had to be our
00:08:44
suspect's blood the variety of blood stains provided Vital Information about the
00:08:50
relationship between Mitchell and the person who killed him didn't rifle through a bunch of
00:08:56
drawers or anything like it was a robbery we know that the the killer was covered
00:09:03
with blood because especially right here you'll see the uh blood transfer on the
00:09:09
sofa and that's a pattern transfer from the clothing and you can tell it looks
00:09:14
like somebody sat down that was covered with blood they sat on the sofa to rest for a minute that indicates that he's
00:09:22
not in fear of anybody coming right to the house it indicates a level of comfort
00:09:29
inside of the residence the suspect also seemed to have been welcomed into the property
00:09:37
there's no forc entry to the residence there's no damage to the door frame
00:09:43
indicating the U door was opened most likely by Mitchell Jones but the murder weapon remained a
00:09:52
mystery when Mitchell called now one and said that he was shot it had kind of confused us because he had so many
00:09:58
multiple um stab wounds and we could never find a gun or shell casing perpetrators of homicide are much
00:10:07
more likely to use a handgun than they are a knife in fact knives are only used in about 10% of cases according to the
00:10:14
FBI in his 911 call Mitchell actually says that he's been shot rather than that he's been
00:10:21
stabbed when the autopsy was completed there was no bullet wounds all the medical examiner can tell us is that
00:10:28
there were multiple stab wounds I talked to the medical examiner who performed the autopsy and instead of
00:10:36
been able to indicate the exact number he identified them as clusters couldn't
00:10:42
actually count how many his uh aord was punctured one of his lungs was punctured
00:10:49
uh numerous other near fatal injuries occurred the scene upstairs provided more insight into Mitchell's
00:10:58
relationship with his killer when I initially went into the master bedroom there were candles that had been
00:11:05
lit which indicate there was possible romantic involvement the crime scene tells you
00:11:13
that this had to been somebody that was close to Mitchell some kind of passion involved for someone to kill Mitchell
00:11:20
like that we also learned that he happened to be single and was dating other men these things had to be looked at
00:11:28
when we didn't have any actionable leads at the beginning of the investigation the police needed to
00:11:35
investigate Mitchell's lovers but they were still missing a critical piece of
00:11:41
evidence we learned on that first day that uh the suspect had taken Mitchell's
00:11:47
cell phone your entire life is on the phone so we didn't have a whole lot of
00:11:52
who he was with last who did he call who did he contact police tracked down one of
00:11:57
Mitchell's close friends Jasmine in a text message to her Mitchell said he was in an abusive
00:12:06
relationship I think when people think about domestic violence they assume that the victims are always women and the
00:12:12
perpetrators are always men and while that's usually the case so in the US it's estimated that one in Four Women
00:12:18
will be the victims of domestic violence at some point in their lives one in nine
00:12:22
men in the United States are also the victims of domestic violence and if you're a gay man your goes way back up
00:12:30
to the same rate as women because Mitchell's messages didn't name who was abusive detectives needed
00:12:38
to check his relationships and start ruling people out one of the pictures Mitchell had
00:12:45
sent uh of that boy to Jasmine was uh a FaceTime photo of the male and he was shirtless uh in that photo I noticed
00:12:54
that there were praying hands on tattoos and the tattoo was of a Praying hand on
00:12:59
his chest with a rest in peace and the date of when that person was deceased so I did a hashtag search and I found a
00:13:08
post made by a person named Eric when I clicked on the profile I saw that that tattoo matched the same tattoo that I
00:13:17
was looking at from that boy and that's how I was able to identify him the police tracked down a friend
00:13:25
named Eric and brought him in for an interview the faster we get to the jail the faster you'll be able to get
00:13:31
out Eric told the police that he'd been hanging out with another male at the
00:13:36
time of the murder detective Ry and I went to the apartment complex of this smil that he was hanging out with and as
00:13:44
we were getting off the elevator detective Ry noticed a dog poop um on the side of the
00:13:52
elevator this bizarre observation actually became very important after they checked Eric's cell phone
00:13:59
there was a picture that he had taken of the same dog poop that we saw and he had
00:14:06
sent it to a close friends of his which at the time of him taking that photo and
00:14:12
sending it there was no way he would have had enough time to send that photo at that time then drive to Mitchell's
00:14:18
house to commit the homicide that picture gave Eric an alibi he wasn't [Music]
00:14:26
there with Eric completely cleared of all charges the police were back to square one they searched the area
00:14:34
looking for cameras a lot of people have rain door cameras or ADT Security or any number of
00:14:43
cameras around their house and if we see any of those we try to make contact and we did locate One camera
00:14:51
that was in the vicinity of the uh scene the video shows a vehicle pulling into the residence
00:15:04
it left maybe a minute or two after the 911 call you can't see a tag number on the
00:15:12
vehicle but you can see the brake lights pretty clearly and 2 weeks prior we see
00:15:19
another vehicle that has the same brake lights and this is daytime and you can actually see it's a black vehicle or
00:15:26
dark colored vehicle numerous people in the office helped us look for vehicles that had similar tail
00:15:34
lights and then we finally identified the vehicle it was it was a Buick lern we searched
00:15:44
around uh to see if you know in the locally have we stopped anything similar to it and we just couldn't find
00:15:53
anything at this point the case stalled because we didn't have anything to go by
00:15:58
the long longer the time goes on the less evidence you're going to have because phone data only lasts certain
00:16:05
amount of time video only last a certain amount of time and unfortunately uh some of the
00:16:12
dating sites he was on would not honor a subpoena from us for records it was very
00:16:20
disheartening it was so frustrating at this point Mitchell's mom at the time
00:16:25
was very upset she was calling for answers and and wanting us to do everything and and at one point she was
00:16:32
very upset with me uh because she didn't think I was doing a good job with no more leads the case went
00:16:41
cold for 4 months before a digital forensic breakthrough one of the detectives in
00:16:51
the office just come back from training with the FBI he had heard about a geofence
00:16:57
technology which where you put a a virtual fence around the location and any phone that crosses that that number
00:17:05
would show up analysts at Google were asked to identify the phones that were active
00:17:12
close to the crime scene we saw essentially that there were four users that were within the Geo fence that we
00:17:19
submitted to them three of those were quickly eliminated as potential suspects because they were
00:17:25
neighbors and then there was one user that was unknown to us had not been a name even on the radar in terms of the
00:17:32
investigation we asked Google to unmask the number and to give us the information
00:17:40
Associated the email came back to Dante [Music] Holmes we have a person now let's start
00:17:48
digging on this person let's start working let's start going he was actually on probation for a violent
00:17:54
crime uh he lived in the Atlanta area we obtained a search warrant for that iCloud and we received what was uploaded
00:18:03
well that night of the homicide there was a picture that was uploaded on the iCloud for Dante with an ankle um
00:18:12
wrapped up in bandage around it so it looked like the person had been cut there was one other key piece of
00:18:21
evidence that linked Dante Holmes to the scene of the crime we noticed that Dante Holmes's
00:18:28
mother had a bu lern we also learned that Dante Holmes was a primary operator of that
00:18:37
vehicle we all agreed that the next step would be to try to obtain an arrest warrant from a judge to execute that on
00:18:43
Dante Holmes in the hopes that we would be able to get some additional information either forensically or
00:18:48
through an [Music] interview Dante Holmes was arrested and brought into custody he was transported back to Cobb
00:19:03
County where we interviewed him we also collected his DNA to compare to the suspect DNA at the
00:19:11
scene it was a very emotional roller coaster even going into the interview because knowing all the work that we had
00:19:19
put in all the man hours we have put [Music] in this is the climax how you doing
00:19:27
detective Grim set during the interview we're looking for several things we're looking at uh how
00:19:33
they move how they look what we get to the meat and potatoes um ask you a couple basic
00:19:41
questions here when they're answering questions how's their tone you know
00:19:46
we'll ask several questions which they're going to give positive answers
00:19:50
to last name is holes Hol mes yes sir Dante d u n t yes sir how's that compared to an answer when we
00:20:01
ask him was he at the murder scene what I want to talk to you about is Mitchell Jones do you know Mitchell
00:20:12
Jones that's going to be slightly different we're looking for little hints
00:20:16
that they'll drop there would be no reason for you to phone to be at Mitchell Jones's housing no reason hm no
00:20:25
reason no reason whatsoever What's going at the start of the interview he was
00:20:31
very sure of himself very standoffish if I told you that was not the correct answer what would you say to
00:20:39
that that it was wrong you're not being honest with this puts you at Mitchell's
00:20:53
house the officers started to put more information to Dante and that's what we
00:20:58
need to find out that is a specific technique in interrogations where you let the suspect start talking and then
00:21:07
you start coming with information that you already have evidence for saying actually we know this we know you're
00:21:12
drived by a car we know you've been to the house multiple times your phone puts
00:21:16
you in that same car at the house rather than putting all your cards on the table
00:21:21
at once you are selectively releasing that information to see how the suspect changes their story or whether they
00:21:27
change their story and then to try and trip them up in the lie and hopefully to end up in a
00:21:34
disclosure that's was czy as we confronted him with the evidence that refuted what he was saying
00:21:44
we have all these answers already but we need to know what happened in the house
00:21:48
that's our question he began the only thing I can think of looking defeated did he become aggressive toward
00:21:57
you did something go wrong we just don't understand it's not like television where you know you've
00:22:05
got good C bad cop detective Stoddard and I both took the you know the grandfatherly
00:22:14
approach did you get scared we know sometimes things are unintentional research very much finds that being nice
00:22:23
and treating people as human beings and asking them about what they know rather than trying to force it out of them them
00:22:28
is a much more useful strategy the idea is that if they trust you they're more
00:22:32
likely to disclose the truth to you and they're more likely to give you information that you need sometimes
00:22:37
things happen that we don't intend to happen we know what happened we know you
00:22:42
need to get it off your chest we know you've got a lot on your mind with Dante uncooperative the
00:22:52
officers sat and waited in silence having the really long silence feels really intimidating I think if
00:23:05
you're in a room with two police officers and you know what they think happened and you know what happened it
00:23:12
must be terrifying it's almost a game of well obviously we're not going to end
00:23:18
this you're not going to leave until you start talking for the following 4 minutes no
00:23:25
words were exchanged [Music] and then D Holmes finally broke down I'm going be 100% honest with
00:23:50
y'all come in the house people talk to you like I don't want to do this like
00:23:59
he had the back turn and turn around and he tried to stab me then we start fighting I hit him over the head with a
00:24:11
piece of glass and he dropped the knife and I grabbed the knife and he was on top of me so I stabbed him in the
00:24:23
back more than 25 individual wounds that Dante claimed were in self-defense I had the St CU if I want
00:24:34
them I would have been there we did not believe in self-defense the scene indicated is the
00:24:44
opposite Mitchell had broken it off with him didn't want to be involved cuz Mitchell liked to date people he he
00:24:52
didn't want to be tied down to one person Mitchell had broke it off with Dante Dante had convinced him hey let me
00:24:59
come over one last time they gone up in a in a bedroom and that's when Mitchell
00:25:05
Jones was assaulted preceding intimate partner murder you often find what I just
00:25:13
generally referred to us strong emotions and that can be anger that can be things
00:25:17
caused by someone saying I want to break up something that ignites the first move
00:25:23
towards violence and it makes sense to me that they were talking talk about breaking up and then this started not to
00:25:30
say that that excuses it by any means but that is exactly the kind of thing that is often the precipitating factor
00:25:36
for intimate partner murder once he admitted that he did it it was just such an Elation and at the
00:25:47
same time a relief put your hands together Dante's DNA also matched the swab taken from the scene of the crime
00:25:59
the case never went to trial on January 6th 2020 Dante Holmes pleaded guilty to aggravated assault
00:26:08
aggravated battery and malice murder he was sentenced to life in prison Mitchell Jones's family was
00:26:17
grateful uh for the fact that there would be some finality and that they knew that Dante Holmes would serve life
00:26:23
in prison based on uh this brutal crime that he had committed against their their loved one Mitchell
00:26:30
with this case technology played a huge role having the video surveillance having the iCloud photo that was
00:26:37
uploaded having geofence being there all of those things collected together put everything together as a big puzzle led
00:26:45
us to Dante Holmes and the conviction of the murder being a homicide detective is
00:26:52
like you're speaking for people who cannot speak victims can't tell you what
00:26:57
happened is satisfying knowing that it will help bring closure to the family to the victim's
00:27:14
family in the US it's estimated that 30% of the population have done online dating almost 100 million people but
00:27:24
online interaction lacks the non-verbal cues that we rely on on to assess honesty you can never truly know
00:27:32
somebody that you've met online if you've only interacted with them online
00:27:37
and that Honesty in the relationship develops over continual face-to-face meetings which is all important for
00:27:43
human beings in us trying to understand what it is we're seeing in front of us
00:27:49
so understanding doesn't depend on what I say it also depends on how I behave
00:27:56
and the interaction of those two things as the Quest for romance moves increasingly online new ways to lie are
00:28:03
quickly evolving research has found that more than half of Us online daters admit
00:28:08
to lying in their profiles in order to detect when someone's deceptive you need
00:28:13
to speak to them face to face and in our next case in the UK in the county of Nottinghamshire the transition from
00:28:26
screen time to time in in real life was problematic with messages misread red flags never
00:28:37
spotted Colston Basset a small village southeast of the city of Nottingham home to CLA Abel
00:28:48
white CLA Abel white was 47 years old she was a mom of three she had previously been married and had always
00:28:54
been working on a farm when her marriage ended Claire left the farm and went to live in the closet
00:29:02
Village of coulston Basset she was living a very rural life there working in his Stables looking after horses CLA
00:29:09
loved animals and she was also running a really successful business walking dogs
00:29:13
at the time and people who knew her would always talk of her as this really popular well-liked sociable
00:29:21
woman but on February 26th 2022 CLA failed to turn up at the stable where she worked a friend of hers turned up on the
00:29:34
morning and CLA wasn't there like normal tending to the horses so something started to seem a little bit odd to
00:29:42
her Claire's father he decided to pop over to the house to check on her he called up there was no
00:29:50
answer he walked up the stairs that was when he found CLA laying in a pool of blood
00:30:01
Claire's father called an ambulance he says she looks dead she's white and
00:30:06
she's cold but they ask him to start doing CPR and mouth to mouth on her which must have been incredibly
00:30:15
traumatic when the ambulance arrived CLA had already succumbed to horrific injuries and was pronounced
00:30:25
dead when the police arrived at the crime scene they found a number of details around in the room there was
00:30:30
blood splattered everywhere she had blunt force trauma to the Head she'd been heavily assaulted to the face there
00:30:37
was Slash wounds on her neck they actually discovered stab wounds in her chest as well CLA had been left so long
00:30:44
that riger mortis had started to set in on her body the police now had a murder investigation on their
00:30:53
hands the house was made a crime scene the police naturally will look for details of forensic evidence
00:31:01
unfortunately cla's phone had also been removed from the scene there was no evidence that they could check on her
00:31:06
mobile phone and crucially no murder weapon found at the scene nor was there any other DNA
00:31:14
evidence police are up against it here they have a killer on the loose at this point and it's really difficult if the
00:31:21
police don't have some of these solid bits of evidence to work off professor Coral dando is a forensic
00:31:30
psychologist whenever we go into any situation we leave some sort of trace of having been there but when people go
00:31:39
prepared to leave as little trace evidence as possible it makes the police's job and the forensic scientist
00:31:47
job well almost impossible the police decided to use ultraviolet powder dusted over the crime
00:31:55
scene to try and find more evidence they'll powder around the whole scene Turn the Lights Out and this will then
00:32:02
show up evidence that the naked eye can't see the police make a significant Discovery they find shoe prints which
00:32:13
they discover could only have been caused by the killer these prints were made whilst cla's blood was still
00:32:21
fresh the shoe prints were a useful lead but the police had very little else to go on
00:32:28
[Music] the crime was committed in a remote location where there weren't many
00:32:37
cameras the police appealed to the public for information they got a really significant breakthrough one of cla's
00:32:46
neighbors were away on holiday they believe that they might have caught cla's murder on one of their
00:32:54
CCTV cameras they call the police fly back from holiday and rush home to give them the
00:33:01
evidence the camera captured crucial footage a figure loitering nearby play's house is behind the fence
00:33:12
this behavior is very suspicious I think most of us would look at this behavior and think this is really odd to be
00:33:19
walking partway across a neighbor's drive next door to someone that we now know had been
00:33:26
murdered the video gave the police vital Clues Professor Vasilios kajan opos is a
00:33:34
specialist in cyber crime he's wearing a jacket he has a rock sock and he's wearing Adidas
00:33:43
sneakers with a distinctive three stripes that mat the footprint that was found in cla's
00:33:50
home but even more shocking the video was recording sound the audio was traffic and never
00:34:00
released we can hear CLA she's having a conversation with a neighbor and we see
00:34:05
this male sort of hanging around waiting for a little while he then goes and knocks on Claire's door the dogs are
00:34:12
barking she lets him [Music] in once he then enters the house what we can then hear which is really just
00:34:23
unbelievable and harrowing is Claire's screams as she is being murdered the person in the footage was
00:34:33
now the prime suspect for Claire's murder now they needed to work out exactly who the killer was and try to
00:34:41
trace their journey to and from cla's house scrolling back through the footage
00:34:48
on cla's neighbors CCTV the police Hit Upon a clue which was captured purely by
00:34:54
chance [Music] this is a really rural area of the country it's dark it doesn't look as if
00:35:06
there are any street lights so this would be really really difficult to see but it's the fact that if we watch
00:35:12
carefully a car drives past this enables the CCTV camera to pick up this person on a bike riding in the direction of
00:35:26
Claire's house this short Glimpse gave the police Vital Information about the route he took to
00:35:34
her house but they still had no idea who her killer was the investigators scanned the
00:35:43
cameras along a cycle way to Corston busard where CLA was staying and they can see someone cying on the night of
00:35:52
the murder we can see the light color backpack on this piece of footage and the previous footage had an individual
00:36:01
with a light color backpack this crime happening in such a remote place means that no one else
00:36:08
would have been around at the time and the image of this guy matched the CCTV from the neighbor's camera too so the
00:36:16
police were really on to something police Tracked Down CCTV cameras close to cla's home and after an
00:36:25
extensive search they found multiple Clips showing a cyclist with similar identifying
00:36:34
features it gives more evidence more clues to the police in terms of what the person might look like what they might
00:36:43
have been wearing and then that makes it easier to spot them in other footage and
00:36:48
create a map of their movements the police thought they had caught the killer on camera but they
00:36:55
still couldn't identify the suspect pressure was mounting to find Claire's
00:37:02
murderer 10 days into the investigation the police have another huge breakthrough someone from the team
00:37:10
manages to locate cla's phone at the bottom of a local River and they somehow
00:37:15
managed to get it working again the police accessed messages which revealed that Claire had been having a
00:37:22
relationship with a younger man CLA had been using a dating website messaging this younger guy who was 26
00:37:30
years old they hadn't really known each other that long they'd gone on a few
00:37:35
coffee dates stuff like that he was identified as John Jessup he was a local guy local to
00:37:46
Nottingham Shire on the surface of quite a normal guy to be honest he was quite Keen tennis player someone who hadn't
00:37:53
been on the police's radar he had no History of Violence no DNA in the police's system at any point there was a
00:38:02
21-year age gap between John and CLA as the police are sort of delving into the message chain between these two
00:38:10
they kind of work out that most of this was John instigating stuff with CLA they'd met each other a few times they'd
00:38:17
only been intimate once and then it's at this point CLA decides to call the relationship off um we can see in the
00:38:24
messages that she was kind of having some out because of the age difference it's at this point where we
00:38:31
see a real switch in John's Behavior he absolutely feels rejected he starts bombarding CLA with
00:38:44
messages there's one really really long message where he says he starts to feel
00:38:49
really used and wants answers from CLA about why she's decided to end the relationship and leave
00:38:55
him John appeared to have a motive for killing CLA CLA says she feels conflicted about
00:39:03
the age difference she sort of wants to call the relationship off and I just wonder if this was some kind of trigger
00:39:10
point for John jesser there was something else that raised suspicions John is someone who had never
00:39:19
come forward at any point to help the police's investigation despite being in
00:39:23
cla's life in the buildup to this crime the police also made another important
00:39:29
discovery about John he doesn't have a driver's license so the only way he could have come in
00:39:36
was with a bike John Jessup was now suspect number one but the police still needed evidence
00:39:47
to link him to cla's murder the police start their digging and what they find is some CCTV from
00:39:56
around 18 miles away from where CLA was killed the footage was recorded while Johan ma was working in the
00:40:06
[Music] store he took a pastry and he came and paid for it and uh he was just a normal
00:40:14
person he was polite bought the stuff and then left the shop he was just like a exhausted person a major breakthrough
00:40:22
the camera captured John Jessup close to Claire's home just a few hours before
00:40:27
her murder this footage is really important for the police because it's giving them the person how he looks what
00:40:35
he's wearing the details of the rock sock um and in particular we can see the
00:40:41
distinctive three stripes Snickers that he is wearing that we know this person outside CLA H was wearing there isn't
00:40:50
any such thing as a series of coincidences John doesn't have a driving license and he doesn't have a car it's
00:40:57
more likely that he would have had to ride his bike to cla's house this was now enough evidence for
00:41:07
the police to go and arrest him 11 days after cla's death the police moved [Music]
00:41:18
in police go to John's place of work to arrest him when they go in he's hiding
00:41:24
in the toilet they go in with tasers cuz they're not really sure how he's going
00:41:28
to react remember this is someone who's just committed a really brutal and frenzied stabbing of someone towards me
00:41:36
put your head get all right bu understand what's happening this officer here needs to
00:41:45
tell you something listen very carefully all right I'm not doing this words are
00:41:50
carriers of information carriers of deception and we know that the more that people say the more likely is that we
00:41:57
can understand whether what they're saying is being deceptive the fact that he's immediately said I didn't do
00:42:04
anything I think is unusual to us but it's not at all odd for those people that work with um offenders such as him
00:42:14
time of arrest was 8:46 I'm not doing this let's go I think that the way he's behaving
00:42:21
there is in line with all of the CCTV footage that we've seen he's quite a
00:42:27
calm measured individual orbe it that he had committed a very violent attack on CLA and ultimately murdered her and he's
00:42:37
just very silent very measured and it doesn't seem to come as any surprise to
00:42:43
him which suggests that maybe he lacks empathy but again you can clearly see from his face it's the same man in the
00:42:53
shop and the evidence is obviously there to arrest him [Music] John Jessup was taken into custody and
00:43:03
questioned the police interview John over the course of 3 days initially he denies any involvement but on October
00:43:10
the 12th he confesses to killing CLA the police were able to piece together exactly what had happened the
00:43:18
night of cla's murder on the 25th of February John Jessup Cycles 18 miles to get to cla's
00:43:26
house he leaves his phone at his home John Cycles past cla's house he stores the bike away and sort of waits
00:43:35
in the shadows for her to get back listens to her talking to her neighbor and then Waits and goes into
00:43:41
her home the police estimate that he was at her house for around an hour during the
00:43:46
murder after killing CLA Jon steals her mobile phone he goes to a local stream and discards it in there then gets back
00:43:53
on the bike puts his hat back on starts a cycle back home but the question remained was her
00:44:01
murder premeditated his version of event is that he went over there they'd had an
00:44:07
argument and in the sort of Heat of the Moment he'd grabbed a knife and killed
00:44:13
her the tricky thing about this case was that the police were never able to locate the murder weapon that there
00:44:20
meant the prosecution had this real challenge that they couldn't prove that this was a premeditated murder
00:44:30
John Jessup confessed there was no trial John pleaded guilty to murder at notingham Crown Court in October
00:44:43
2022 on January 4th 2023 he was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 17 years the fact that that murder weapon
00:44:55
was never found meant that John got got a lesser sentence I think he thought that he
00:45:00
would get away with it definitely and and in fact arguably if cla's next door
00:45:06
neighbor CCTV footage wasn't available chances how would have got away with it
00:45:13
the CCTV and the digital forensics they were essential to get a conviction within this case because there was no
00:45:20
DNA evidence that was found in the house the footage that was caught on cla's
00:45:23
neighbor's camera and that footage that we see of John in the shop it was essential you know we would not have
00:45:29
been able to reach that point when you think it wasn't really that much of a relationship that they
00:45:35
had built for that then to have escalated into CLA being killed in this way it just disproportionate is the word
00:45:42
that comes to mind CLA did nothing wrong and women should be able to say no this just
00:45:50
speaks to an issue that keeps continuing to happen with a minority of men who were not able to to accept someone
00:45:58
turning them down or rejecting them it is just so tragic that this loving mother of three that was starting this
00:46:06
new chapter in her life has had her life taken away from her so senselessly [Music]
