Sword and Scale contains adult themes and violence and is not intended for all audiences.
00:00:06
Listener discretion is advised. Okay, are you looking at her, sir? What happened there?
00:00:15
Okay, tell me what happened. I got you. Hi, my name's Mike. This is my show. It's called Sword and Scale,
00:00:26
A show that reveals that the worst monsters are real. And today we're going to discuss a very interesting story.
00:00:37
But I'm going to warn you in advance, I'm going to offer my opinion. I'm going to offer my opinion a whole lot.
00:00:42
I'm going to offer it so much, it's going to be really annoying. Thank you. Is anyone really who you think they are?
00:01:41
Today we present just the very best moments of our lives on social media for the world to see.
00:01:48
But that's not really the whole picture, is it? There's a lot more to us than what we show.
00:01:55
What we show can be intentionally deceiving sometimes. That's why it's important not to believe everything you see online, especially if it's coming from an anonymous source.
00:02:09
That influencer that you follow that puts on makeup while talking about someone's death, yeah, she cries sometimes.
00:02:18
Yeah, maybe she's even depressed. Maybe her life's fallen apart behind the scenes and you don't even know it.
00:02:25
looks can be deceiving. And no, I'm not talking about anybody in general. There's lots of makeup tutorial true crime shows out there.
00:02:34
Sadly. But the point is that sometimes people aren't who they seem to be. Monsters are very much real,
00:02:42
but they aren't always the person you first suspect. It was 8.30 a.m. on October 28, 2012,
00:03:23
and a Florida firefighter had just returned home after a grueling 24-hour shift to find out that his house had been turned upside down.
00:03:36
Jack, I don't want someone. Yes, my wife hurt herself. Please send Andy with that.
00:03:41
How did she hurt herself? I don't know. She's cut herself or something. Come on.
00:03:46
Okay, let me get you on a farm rescue. What moment is? Kim. Kim. Oh, you got him now.
00:03:52
Oh, you fucking now. The firefighter had come home to find his wife, Kim, lying bloody at the foot of their bed.
00:04:02
She was naked, except for a white cotton shirt which had been pushed up around her neck, exposing her upper body.
00:04:10
Fire rescue Cyrus, what is the address? My wife's next to the suicide. Sir, wait a minute.
00:04:16
God damn it, listen to me. And what is the address? 10 rescue 50. Okay, sir, tell me exactly what happened.
00:04:22
I don't know if she tried to commit suicide. Send rescue 50 in my city fireman. Come on.
00:04:27
Sir, we are sending rescue. You have to tell me exactly what she did. What happened?
00:04:31
I don't know. She either cut herself or something. I can't see. I'm trying to figure this the fuck out.
00:04:36
Okay. Are you with her right now? Yes, I am. Okay. How old is she? I don't know.
00:04:42
She's 24. That doesn't make a difference. Send rescue. Kim had blood all over her face and hair.
00:04:49
At first glance, it appeared that she had tried to hurt herself. So that's what her husband told dispatch.
00:04:57
Her body was cold and posed like a fallen ballerina with one leg curled, frozen in a pirouette.
00:05:05
Kim had two white zip ties around each of her wrists and one around her ankle. Kim's husband had found himself on the receiving end of a tragedy.
00:05:15
As a firefighter, he experienced tragedy every shift, but it was much different now that it was happening in his own home, and he was growing increasingly angry as he waited for help.
00:05:29
Sir, we are sending rescue. Is she awake? No, she's not. I think she's dead. Okay, is she breathing?
00:05:36
No, I'm trying to get this to the other side. I'm trying to copy your ass. This is when Kim's husband began to realize that his wife was dead.
00:05:45
Rescue. Rescue. Yes. We're on the phone because when I asked him what was going on, he didn't
00:05:50
tell me she tried to commit suicide So we on the way too Okay All right sir Go ahead and continue with CPR We do have rescue on the way He said he was a fireman He said he was an off fireman What is your last name sir
00:06:05
His name was Derek Dorsey. He was 44 years old and had been married to his wife, Kim, for a decade.
00:06:14
Now she lay naked and dead in their master bedroom. The realization of what was happening made Derek soften a little,
00:06:23
and he finally let the tears out. Oh, Jesus Christ. You're in a rescue? Yes. Yes.
00:06:31
Okay, sir. So you think she's beyond any resuscitation? Yes, you're in a rescue anyway.
00:06:36
You're in a safe spot. Yes, rescue's on the way, okay? You know what happened? Yeah, I know.
00:06:45
Oh, fuck me. I don't know what happened. All right, rescue is on the way. This wasn't another shift as a firefighter.
00:06:53
This was his house. His bedroom was covered in his wife's blood. Derek finally saw the situation for what it really was.
00:07:04
He had just lost his wife. And he had no idea what had happened. Did you just come home or did you...
00:07:13
Yes, I just got off duty. Okay. Was she already depressed about something? I don't know. No, she's been fine.
00:07:22
Oh, I know. If the person's injured, it looks like his lung's missing. Kim and Derek Dorsey had a large upscale house in a gated community.
00:07:31
Because they had no children, only three miniature schnauzers, the couple were free to focus on their careers and self-care.
00:07:39
They had a gym, a bar, a billiard room, a big office, and a tanning room. All the fine luxuries in modern living.
00:07:49
Kim had her own construction company and also worked as a director of training for the Quality Assurance Department of Inspection Depot.
00:07:58
The Dorseys had a pretty comfortable life. The Dorseys also kept guns in the home for safety.
00:08:05
Kim had one in a drawer beside her bed, and now it was missing. Kim had no bullet holes in her,
00:08:12
but there were obvious shots that had been fired into the walls. Oh my God. I don't know what's going on.
00:08:23
So which door was open? Are y'all there by this door? D-R-A-W-E-R Okay, it's just hard to understand something, you know, when you talk a little louder, get a little distorted, that's all.
00:08:36
Oh, brother, I don't even talk to anybody right now. Well, it's our job to sell the phone to the officer who gets there when it's this type of call, okay?
00:08:44
Jesus Christ. Yeah, well, she's here. She's here. All right. When help arrived, Kim was quickly taken to the medical examiner's office
00:08:55
When rescue lifted her body, they found a broken pool cue underneath her Police began to search the house and found more peculiarities
00:09:04
Besides the plastic zip ties on Kim's body The house was a mess A dog statue at the front door had been kicked over
00:09:13
Derek's home office had been destroyed Paperwork was thrown everywhere and drawers were ripped open.
00:09:21
In the guest bedroom, there was blood on the mattress. Police also found a half-drunk bottle of Bacardi rum on the nightstand and cigarette butts on the floor.
00:09:32
But neither Derek nor Kim smoked. In fact, Kim despised smoking and forbade it in the home.
00:09:40
Christmas wrapping paper had been tossed out of the closet and chucked onto the floor.
00:09:45
Downstairs, the kitchen sink had been filled with TV remote controls for some reason.
00:09:51
In the billiard and games room, a custom pool cue was missing from its place on the shelf.
00:09:58
It was the same one found under Kim's body. After days of looking into this bizarre scene, the police needed more to work with.
00:10:08
Perhaps this was a robbery gone wrong. So, they went to the public. I'm coming to you today because several days later after the beginning of that investigation,
00:10:20
we are not a whole lot farther along than we were Sunday morning. I would like to solicit the public's help for information on this case.
00:10:30
This case has garnered quite a bit of attention because of the fact this is a public servant's family member who's killed.
00:10:37
The public has shown a lot of interest and support thus far. We wanted to come forward at this time asking for help.
00:10:43
Again, we worked that scene for several days, nearly around the clock. And like I said, because of the lack of witnesses, the physical evidence,
00:10:53
nothing has led us a whole lot farther today in identifying or leading it to a suspect
00:10:59
than we had that Sunday morning. And again, this is a public service family member,
00:11:05
and we want to make sure that anybody who has that information can come forward and help us.
00:11:10
these type of crimes occur. People have to talk about them. Family members talk about them.
00:11:16
Point to the suspects, the suspect in this case, talk about it. Somebody knows something somewhere.
00:11:23
Kim's murder was brutal and messy. As police continued to examine the scene and talk to Derek,
00:11:30
they found even more weird things. Derek's custom Harley-Davidson Zippo lighter was missing from its box.
00:11:40
Whoever did this to Kim had clearly stolen it. Yet, they'd left Derek's Rolex watches on the nightstand and his computer untouched.
00:11:51
In the garage they found a lonely wife porn magazine which Derek swore was not his How much evidence of foul play Substantial Can you describe some of that I would prefer not to
00:12:06
Keep in mind that there's just about anybody out there who could be our suspect, and I
00:12:12
don't want to let too much information to answer your question out. Too much information can be bad in a particular instance, but know that there was substantial
00:12:21
indications of foul play obviously in the face of work Kim's head and face had been brutally beaten
00:12:29
her breasts were bruised and her ribs were fractured she had died from one deep fatal stab wound
00:12:38
to the neck when detectives asked Derek to turn on his DVD player in the living room
00:12:44
he expected to see a movie he and Kim had been watching pop up on the screen but that didn't happen instead a porn movie called lonely wives came up derek got angry
00:12:59
motherfucker that should not be on there that's the same magazine that's out in the garage it is a
00:13:06
gated neighborhood so there may be some people in that actual neighborhood who we haven't spoken to
00:13:12
If there's relative information that anyone has regarding the activities that Kim may have had that Saturday to that Sunday, we would certainly like to speak with them as well.
00:13:23
Now, the police had their work cut out for them. In the meantime, Derek prayed that somebody somewhere knew something.
00:13:42
The End but in strange ways. The police found remote controls in the kitchen sink
00:14:18
as though someone had attempted to wash them. Zip ties around Kim's wrists as well as a pornographic movie in the DVD player.
00:14:27
None of Derek's Rolex watches or computers had been taken. It seemed that whoever killed Kim
00:14:33
stuck around the house for a long while after drinking and smoking and watching a porn movie called Lonely Wives.
00:14:44
I haven't seen that one. I wonder if there's a part two or three or four. Derek Dorsey was cooperative with the police.
00:14:53
He admitted that things between him and Kim were not so great. Then again, every couple goes through tough times at one point or another.
00:15:03
But Derek had been kind of sleeping around with other women behind her back. Maybe Kim knew.
00:15:11
Maybe she didn't. But he swore that he still loved his wife deeply. She was a strong, beautiful, independent individual.
00:15:21
Worked hard for everything she ever did. She was a productive member of society.
00:15:26
This is just the type of person that she was. Derek said he had nothing to gain from Kim's death.
00:15:32
There was no life insurance policy to be cashed out or a new girlfriend to move in and take Kim's place.
00:15:39
Plus, Derek's alibi was solid and actually checked out. He was working at the fire station during the murder.
00:15:47
So, who did this? Derek and Kim were a career-oriented couple. They had no kids, just a few dogs.
00:15:55
And both worked in the construction world. Kim had a degree in civil engineering and headed up quality assurance for an inspection depot,
00:16:04
where she helped Floridians prepare construction for hurricanes. Derek ran his own general contracting business on top of being a firefighter, so they had a lot of cash.
00:16:17
But Kim took her work very seriously, and it soon weighed on her. She couldn't turn off work, and she found herself taking antidepressants.
00:16:26
She gained a lot of weight. Her body changed, and her mind didn't feel so great.
00:16:32
The week she was killed, she was planning on going back to the doctor to switch up her medication.
00:16:38
The side effects were taking a major toll on her physical and mental health. That's why Derek immediately thought she'd killed herself when he came home to find her, you know, dead.
00:16:54
But Kim's death was not a suicide. The state of the house told a story of turmoil.
00:17:04
Kim had clearly fought off whoever had attacked her. She'd even managed to get a gun at one point and fire off some rounds at her assailant.
00:17:12
But she missed, and the bullet hit the wall. It was also determined that Kim had been raped.
00:17:21
She died from blunt force trauma to her head and a fatal stab wound. This attack was as personal as it is sickening.
00:17:30
Derek ran a general contracting business and often employed various young guys on quick jobs
00:17:37
he gave the police a few names including Joshua Veal and Lance Kirkpatrick or LJ as he was called
00:17:44
Lance actually lived with the Dorseys at one point and Derek said that he would have taken a bullet for Kim
00:17:50
so tell me when you lived with that, when was that? I wasn too long ago I lived with that not too long ago And I stay there and in the air if I have to Okay So who lives at the house besides him and her They have kids No they don have kids
00:18:06
They have no kids? Okay. Now, do you have a car? No. No car. Alright, so will he take you to work or, I mean, like, take you to the job site?
00:18:15
Yeah, he takes you to the job site. Sometimes they fall like, depending on where I'm staying, they'll come pick me up right now.
00:18:20
So roughly how long, if you know Kim, as long as you know Derek? They've been married the whole time?
00:18:26
Yeah, they've been married the whole time. I mean, pretty much I met. Who'd you meet first?
00:18:31
Well, I met Derek first because I was working on his house. This is before they moved in.
00:18:36
Okay, but they were building that house together? Yeah. Okay, I got you. I got you.
00:18:40
Okay. Leitz said that he met the Dorseys when he worked on their house. Then Derek would call him to come do random jobs for his business.
00:18:50
How long ago did you say you lived with? Maybe a month, a month and a half. Okay.
00:18:55
Not even, I mean, I just went and cleaned. Matter of fact, it's been probably less than a month because I just went and cleaned the room.
00:19:03
You know, he called me like a week or two ago, asked me to come clean the room up upstairs.
00:19:08
Okay. Did you leave the trash? Well, I didn't leave the trash, but I still had some clothes up there.
00:19:14
Okay. He asked me to be cleaned, you know, regular cleaning, stuff like that. Okay.
00:19:19
So you went and did all that? So I went and did all that. When did you do that? About two weeks ago.
00:19:24
Two weeks ago? Okay. Lance said that he hadn't been to the Dorsey's house since he cleared out his stuff.
00:19:30
So you move out. When you move out, where are you living when you have to move out of his place?
00:19:36
I went and stayed in the apartment in the middle of that house. Okay, that's when you split up with Brian.
00:19:42
Okay, I got you. Lance said that he'd been staying with a new friend named Brian Kiefer.
00:19:47
As he told police after leaving the Dorseys, he'd become a bit of a vagabond. Where do you live? I'm just wherever I can stay.
00:19:57
When the police were on to Lance, they didn't just bring him in for fun. You see, Lance had told Derek that he was on a shrimping boat in Georgia when Kim died.
00:20:08
But that wasn't true. He was in Jacksonville staying with his buddy Brian. Brian wasn't the most savory guy, put it that way.
00:20:18
He was straight up sketch. And the police soon got a hold of Brian and brought him in to talk.
00:20:25
There was a person that you know by the nickname of LJ. Do you know his real name?
00:20:31
It's Lance Kirkpatrick, but there is a middle name. I forget what it was. And he goes by the nickname of LJ?
00:20:39
LJ. And do you have a nickname that you go by? Is that money? Yeah, just whatever the black people gave me.
00:20:47
Okay. I mean, no racist comment. No problem. The woman that money, a.k.a. Brian, is talking to is black.
00:20:57
Just for context. Anyway. But the black people call you money? It's like the circle of drug dealers.
00:21:05
That's the name they gave me for some reason. So I let it be that way. That way I know that's the people that are talking to me.
00:21:12
All right. Brian was your typical Floridian drug dealer. Think GTA 6 if you're a gamer.
00:21:21
He was thin and tanned with a shaved head. He did the entire interview with his shirt off because, I don't know, because he wanted to.
00:21:32
He wanted to show off his cool tribal tattoos, you know? Maybe because he fancied himself hot.
00:21:39
I don't know. I don't really know what goes through certain people's heads. But he just sat there with his shirt off, and everyone else in the room was wearing normal clothes.
00:21:50
I want to direct your attention to Florida Georgia Weekend. Do you remember that weekend?
00:21:55
Yes. Last past. Did you have an occasion to see, I guess, a lady by the name of Melissa give her keys to LJ?
00:22:05
Yes. Florida Georgia Weekend was the weekend of Kim's murder. For those of you that aren't Southern trash like me, let me translate.
00:22:13
It's a big football thing. That's really all you need to know. Lance said he was on a shrimping boat that weekend, but he wasn't.
00:22:21
Okay, and what kind of car does Melissa have? A RAV4 Toyota. Okay, do you recall what color it is?
00:22:29
Like navy blue, but it's older, so it's a little faded. Okay. To your knowledge, was that, did Melissa give LJ those keys on Friday?
00:22:38
Saturday morning. Saturday morning. At 4.30 a.m. 4.30 in the morning. The police had been at a standstill in their investigation,
00:22:49
so they began checking security footage from the gated community where the Dorseys lived.
00:22:55
In the morning, a few hours before Derek found his wife, they saw the same blue RAV4 driving on their street.
00:23:03
Did you know where LJ was going? To pick up drugs for the blackmail that was in the house with Melissa.
00:23:14
Okay. Did he come back with the drugs? No. And did that concern you? Yes. Was that unusual for him not to come back?
00:23:23
Very unusual because he was one of my employees and, like, never had done anything wrong, period.
00:23:32
Okay. And was the girl Melissa, was she getting concerned too about her car? She was a crackhead so she was just driving me up the wall.
00:23:42
Alright. So, you get the picture. Lance and Brian were into some shady meth business.
00:23:49
Brian's house acts like a hub for users to stop in, pick up drugs, do some, and then leave.
00:23:58
Lance is staying in the house. there and working for Brian because construction and everything else in his life has slowed down.
00:24:06
Now, Brian was involved in the drug world, but he also ran a legit business, too.
00:24:13
How long have you known LJ? Three months. He reached work for me. And how'd you, you met him, how?
00:24:20
I met him when I was at a drug dealer's house. I went over there to pay. I helped GC get off heroin for three months,
00:24:34
and I went and paid off all his debt so that he could be my partner in my business.
00:24:39
And one of the black gentlemen there stole my vehicle, so I was kind of stuck there.
00:24:48
And that's where I met LJ, and he kind of explained to me what was going on there.
00:24:53
and then he was having a crappy life, and then he wanted to be involved in that.
00:24:58
And if I could please help him. And I was like, I give you my word, buddy. I will try my hardest to help you in life.
00:25:07
And when I leave here, I'll take you with me if you want and put you to work. And what kind of business do you have?
00:25:13
BK for him. So I pretty much do complete home remodels, but my main focus is for him.
00:25:20
So you start to get a picture of the kind of life Brian is leading. Flooring by day, meth by night.
00:25:30
When Lance met Brian, he was technically homeless, using occasionally and going down a dark path.
00:25:38
On the night of the murder, Lance takes Melissa's car to pick up some more drugs, but he never comes back.
00:25:45
That same car is seen on Derek Dorsey's street. Now, at some point in time, were you so concerned that you went out with a person by the nickname
00:25:54
of T to go look for LJ in a cab? Yeah, I spent $480 for about four hours of riding around in a cab looking for LJ everywhere
00:26:06
he's been to, went, everything. And were you able to find him? Didn't find a trace of him.
00:26:13
Okay. And did you ultimately, I guess, go home and go to sleep? Is that what happened?
00:26:18
I didn't want to go home because I didn't want to face my girl or the girl the car got taken from.
00:26:26
So I went to my mom's. And then I had my girl brought over to my mom's. And then I was hoping the other girl would go.
00:26:35
The other girl, Melissa, did go eventually. But she was pissed. Despite being a crackhead, Melissa called the police to report her RAV4 stolen.
00:26:47
She told them exactly what had happened and gave Lance's name. That's how the RAV4 ended up on the police radar.
00:26:54
And how Lance's name clicked when it showed up on the report. My next understanding is that you get a call from LJ on Sunday.
00:27:04
Is that right? Is that a yes? Yes, ma'am. Okay. And what does he tell you when he calls you on Sunday?
00:27:12
We need to meet and tell you the location. I'm on the gate on south side in Touchstone.
00:27:19
Okay, and do you go to the gate on south side in Touchstone? I go there in Gator City Cab, and he's standing out front, and he tells me...
00:27:28
Do I need to... Sure, you can go ahead. Okay, he tells me that... Can we pause it?
00:27:36
No? Okay, what? Okay. He tells me that he murdered somebody, and just pretty much...
00:27:46
He's going to prison, and there's nothing that can be done about it. And I'm saying, I said, what do you mean?
00:27:53
You murdered somebody and your life is over and you're going to prison. He's like, I'm going to prison.
00:28:00
Brian was skeptical. Lance wasn't exactly the most credible person, and they were both, well, you know, sketchy.
00:28:10
I'll just use the word sketchy. Is your son dead? is your ex-wife dead am I dead is my fiance dead no right and he's like no and I was like so there
00:28:24
are people you care about still in the world and he said yes and I said so why don't you focus on
00:28:31
those people for now by your heads running in circles and I don't even know if you're telling
00:28:36
in the story or not you know because you've been out drinking you have a your knuckles broken
00:28:45
you know and why don't you just focus on right now this moment what do you want to do
00:28:52
if you're going to prison but you're not turning yourself in what do you want to do right now
00:28:59
do you want to watch the game he's like yeah i want i want to get a beer and watch the game
00:29:05
I was like, all right, I'll buy you a beer and watch the game. As they were talking, Brian noticed how bad Lance's hand looked.
00:29:12
His bone was sticking out of his hand. Was he trying to treat it at all? It looked like he had cleaned himself up really good.
00:29:19
So the last time you saw him, he didn't have any injuries to his hand? He had a cut on his hand, but he did not have a broken finger.
00:29:28
Okay. So he was scared that the DNA would have gotten on the body. And then he made those statements to you.
00:29:36
Did you have any idea if those were true or not? I didn't know if he had just gotten into a fight.
00:29:44
He didn't say that it was a woman. If he had said it was a woman, then I would have, you know, kind of reacted more, you know.
00:29:53
But just coming there kind of looking drunk kind of just you know he was just really like slow you know wasn giving me no info You know the only thing he said was I going to prison
00:30:08
So he looked like he had drank alcohol? Yeah. Oh, yeah. But I think he had drank alcohol after the fact, you know.
00:30:18
And he didn't tell me nothing about how the murder happened at that time. That's when the two parted ways.
00:30:27
But Lance would return to Brian's mom's house later to watch that Florida-Georgia game.
00:30:33
He came over and I made him two hamburgers and a drink. And I walked upstairs and he was curled up in a ball sleeping.
00:30:46
Okay. Lance hung out for a few days, but the two never talked about the murder again.
00:30:52
Then Brian saw something on television about Lance's boss's wife committing suicide.
00:31:22
Okay. And so there's gunshots involved. I don't know. I don't. That's where it just kind of clicked in my head. Like maybe he's losing it. Who cares?
00:31:33
So essentially, Brian forgot about the whole murder thing and just moved on. Then Lance brought it up again and things got serious.
00:31:43
Well, let me ask you about the conversation that you end up having. You said a couple of days after he was over your mom's house.
00:31:51
tell me like where y'all are when you have a conversation the more detailed of your mom's house
00:31:59
and what does what does he say at that point he says he didn't say her he just said
00:32:10
I hit I swung the pool stick so hard it broke in 12 pieces and it's a $2,000 pool stick.
00:32:22
No details of the crime have been released to the public yet. Brian was telling them things that
00:32:27
only the killer could have known. Like, the broken pool cue, which was later found
00:32:34
under Kim's dead body. Did he say why he was over there first, did he? Yeah, he said he was over there
00:32:40
to pick up his son's PlayStation 3 and Xbox and games and some clothes for his son.
00:32:48
At one point, Lance had been married, and he had a young son from that relationship.
00:32:55
Apparently, when he went back to the Dorseys to collect his son's things, Kim wasn't happy.
00:33:03
He said that the lady was going to call his boss. Her husband. Was at the fire station. Yeah, her husband.
00:33:12
and I guess he took her cell phone is what he said he said I took her cell phone
00:33:20
and I told her to get out of my way that I just wanted my stuff and told her to leave me alone that I just wanted my stuff and pretty much he just goes into
00:33:34
I don't know whether he hit her with that pool stick but he kind of emphasized swinging the pool
00:33:42
stick. Okay. And then he emphasized being shot at five times. And then he said that he was waiting
00:33:50
for the sixth shot because he knew it was a revolver. Okay. But when he heard the window open,
00:33:57
he thought the lady was going out through the window. He ran in there and beat her with his
00:34:05
hand and then stabbed her. The story was sparse and patchy, but the details matched up. The
00:34:14
broken pool cue, the five bullet holes in the wall, and the blood on the window. Why
00:34:23
was she shooting at you? But I didn't really want to question him because I didn't want
00:34:30
to stop him from telling me stuff. Okay. Like I'm interrogating him because, you know. Right.
00:34:35
So, and at the same time, I didn't really believe him. Let's go back to what he was telling you, though.
00:34:41
He says that, I guess, she shoots at him. He hits her and stabs her. Where does he say he stabbed her?
00:34:52
I believe in the neck. Okay. Upper facial neck area. So somewhere her neck or above.
00:35:02
Yeah. Okay. Does he say how many times? Lance. Okay. Well, he just says I stabbed her. Okay. And then what does he say? Does he say that
00:35:15
she was dead or does he say anything about that? He said the lady was saying stop. You're killing me.
00:35:24
Brian's statement secured Lance as the killer, but still the question of why remained. Why was
00:35:33
Kim so angry when Lance showed up at the house to get his things? This was someone that Derek had
00:35:39
told the cops would take a bullet for Kim. Derek had nothing bad to say about Lance, so why was Kim
00:35:46
threatened when he showed up at her house? Brian had revealed the details of the gruesome attack,
00:35:53
and he was about to give police a glimpse into the motive and it didn make Derek look all that wholesome
00:36:25
Florida firefighter and general contractor Derek Dorsey had come home to find his upscale home ransacked and his wife Kim brutally murdered.
00:36:36
The couple's former employee, Lance Kirkpatrick, had been seen driving a stolen car to the Dorsey's house on the day of the murder.
00:36:45
And now his former boss, Brian Kiefer, had told police that Lance admitted to the murder.
00:36:52
Without Brian, the police didn't have much. They had to keep him talking. And then what does he say happens next?
00:37:00
He said he was just so out of it, he stayed there for two hours waiting on the police to get there.
00:37:07
And then he left and then went back there two hours later because he realized he left his phone there
00:37:16
and then he cleaned up around there. What did he say he did to clean up? He just said he cleaned up.
00:37:25
He said he put a phone in a trash disposed. A garbage disposed? A garbage disposed.
00:37:32
Okay. But he did do something with her phone? Yeah, no, he took her phone in the beginning.
00:37:38
Okay. Because he tried to call her husband. He tried to call her. She tried to call.
00:37:44
Okay. There it was again. When Lance showed up at the Dorsey's house to get his son's things,
00:37:50
he told Brian that Kim got so upset she started threatening to call Derek at work.
00:37:57
But Derek had told police that Lance was a good guy who would never do anything to Kim.
00:38:02
Then Brian revealed something sinister. And he had said that her husband always cheated on her.
00:38:13
The husband cheats on her? Yeah. He did tell you that? Yeah. and that him and the husband had sex with some prostitute at his job about a week and a half ago.
00:38:25
And I said, well, then he probably doesn't really care about her. And he was like, no, he cares about her.
00:38:33
And that's all that was said about that. Derek had admitted to police that he had affairs,
00:38:38
but no one knew that he was having threesomes with prostitutes and his employees.
00:38:45
Maybe Kim had known about what Lance and Derek had done. Maybe he was upset about it when he showed up to their house.
00:38:55
What the police did know from the evidence was that LJ showed up unannounced after a bender and demanded his son's things.
00:39:04
We can assume that Kim was frightened and threatened to call Derek, which resulted in Lance attacking her.
00:39:11
We don't know how or why, but he did. The fight escalated and Lance tied Kim to her bedside table with zip ties.
00:39:20
As he ran around the house, Kim managed to get out her revolver and shoot five times.
00:39:26
Then she pulled free and tried to escape out the window. That's when Lance entered the room again and killed her.
00:39:35
In the beginning I made a stupid comment. I was like, was there any motive for you doing this?
00:39:40
You know, I was trying to get a reason why you would kill somebody. you know? And he was like, no, there's no motive at all.
00:39:48
It was just the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time. And they got in the way of me getting my stuff for my son
00:39:56
and I'll always regret it. I was getting everything I could out of him because I'm not gonna sit there
00:40:04
and let somebody get murdered. And even though I thought he was a good person, I'm not going to just sit there and let somebody get murdered.
00:40:14
Did he say he purposely did not take something? Yes. He said he purposely didn't take anything so it wouldn't look like it was him there.
00:40:23
You know? Like if he would have taken anything from his room, it would have looked like it was him.
00:40:28
Okay. So, of course, he said that, you know, they were going to look at it like it was...
00:40:40
the boss that killed her or something, you know, like. Lance hung around the Dorsey's house for hours after he murdered Kim.
00:40:48
He left and came back. He watched that porn movie and he raped Kim. Then he tried to wash the remote controls of his DNA.
00:41:00
He didn't think things through exactly. I mean, he was drunk and high when he did this.
00:41:06
In fact, he was out of his mind. I think earlier I stopped you when you were trying to say that he was concerned about his DNA being there.
00:41:15
Yes, because he had punched holes in the wall like two days previous at my place.
00:41:22
Because Luther Hines kicked the door to my house. Because that's a whole other story.
00:41:31
But anyways, that's why he punched holes in the wall. And then cuts on his head?
00:41:35
Yes. Okay. So he thought the DNA from those cuts, when he punched the lady's face, I guess was cut open.
00:41:44
He thought that they were going to piece it together and that's how they were going to catch him.
00:41:48
Lance's DNA was eventually found all over the house. He drank from bottles. He left cigarette butts on the carpet He didn really try to clean up very much Does LJ smoke Yes What does he smoke When I met him he smoked Marvel Reds Now he smokes Marvel Special Blind 72s
00:42:08
Do you smoke? I smoke Marvel Ultra Lights, and he, pretty much since he hasn't had money, he's been smoking my Marvel Ultra Lights too.
00:42:18
So those are his three brands he would be around. Right after they spoke with Brian, Lance was picked up.
00:42:26
The police expected him to be silent, but he talked. He started yapping. I guess he doesn't know the golden rule we keep repeating here.
00:42:36
Don't talk to cops. When's the last time you were over at Derek's house? I went over there.
00:42:48
a week ago, maybe a week and a half ago, looking for him, see if I could get some money from him,
00:42:59
get a phone and stuff like that, but he wasn't home. Okay. Who was there? I thought him was. There was a truck outside,
00:43:06
but nobody answered the door. So did you go inside and don't let yourself in? No, no, no. The key wasn't even there.
00:43:14
Where's the key supposed to be? It's supposed to be up under the dog right there.
00:43:17
Where's the dog? There's a little dog, like a big dog by the door. So they hide a key there?
00:43:24
Yeah. And you look there and see if it was there? Yeah, and it wasn't there. Lance admitted to the police that he knew where Kim and Derek kept their extra front door key,
00:43:34
under the dog statue. Now, if you recall, that particular statue was kicked over during the murder.
00:43:43
It was all starting to come together. Do you remember what day it was that you went over there and did that?
00:43:51
Yeah, it was Georgia, Florida. Georgia, Florida. It was Georgia, Florida. It was right before the game.
00:43:55
Okay. So on that Saturday? Yeah, on that Saturday, right before the game. Okay. So you went over there and you said you went over to see Derrick.
00:44:03
Yeah. To see the ball form line or to try to get some work out? Try and get some work, which is usually how it goes.
00:44:10
Like, okay, I can use you for a day this week here. Here's some cash. Okay. That's how we usually do it.
00:44:15
What time did you go over there that day? It was right before the game. It was probably around 1 or 2.
00:44:21
1 or 2? Yeah. All right. And that's Saturday? That's Saturday. That's the Georgia weekend.
00:44:26
Did you watch the game? Yeah, I watched the game. Where did you watch the game? I watched the game at Brian's mom's house.
00:44:30
Okay. All right. What is Lance's strategy here? Is he trying to admit he went over there to account for his DNA
00:44:38
and then trying to set up an alibi by watching the game at Brian's? This is seriously an unintelligent man.
00:44:46
Now, when you went over there on Saturday, how did you get over there? To Florida, Georgia?
00:44:50
I was right on mine. Who's that? Her name, I can't remember her last name. Melissa's her first name.
00:44:57
She drove you over? Yeah. In what? In her little car. What kind of car did she have?
00:45:03
A little blue SUV. A little SUV? My lord. The lies. Melissa's car is the one he stole.
00:45:12
just in case you forgot. Oh, hey, Lance. What are you doing? What if I told you I didn't believe all your story?
00:45:20
What story? Well, what part of the story I was believing? Well, the part about how you got over to Derek's house on Saturday.
00:45:27
Okay. With Melissa's truck? Mm-hmm. Okay. Okay. How did I get over there? Well, I know you had Melissa's truck.
00:45:36
But Melissa wasn't in that truck. All right. Well, Jay, we're avoiding the big question here.
00:45:46
I've been asking the question since I got here. Yeah, I know you have been. Okay.
00:45:51
Well, let's go ahead and let's get to this next step here, okay? Yes, all right.
00:45:57
I know you went inside the house last Saturday. Or two Saturdays in Florida. Okay.
00:46:03
All right. And you're good friends with Derek, right? Very good. Okay, very good.
00:46:09
and I know you're talking to people, okay? You gotta remember, I've talked to a lot of people, okay?
00:46:14
And I spent all freaking day today talking to people, okay? All right. And people talk, okay?
00:46:22
And people tell us things, okay? All right. And I know that you went inside the house, okay?
00:46:36
I haven't been inside the house. Well, yeah. Okay. When we talk to people, we talk to a lot of people.
00:46:44
We get a lot of information. Mm-hmm. All right. And then we look at our evidence.
00:46:50
Okay? Yeah. Do you know how a cell phone works? Basically. Tell me how a cell phone works.
00:46:58
This is when the cops had to explain to idiot drug addict Lance that his phone is a tracking device
00:47:06
and it follows him wherever he goes, leaving a digital footprint. It's amazing that people on Earth in 2024 still aren't aware of that.
00:47:19
Must explain our current state of political affairs. They also had to explain to this drain on society
00:47:27
that there was evidence at the scene, like security camera footage, and that the evidence didn't really look all that good for him.
00:47:38
Everybody has a side of the story. We have to afford an opportunity for you to tell us your side of the story.
00:47:44
Okay? That's what we have to do. What story? I don't. We'll get there. It's not costing you nothing to listen to me talk, right?
00:47:52
You follow me? I guess. Okay. When I say you're not a monster, I know this because you talk to somebody and told
00:48:00
Okay. We've spoken to him, and he's already told us what you said. And with that, Lance is pretty much done.
00:48:10
He stopped talking. But the detective still swabbed his cheeks to confirm the DNA and arrested him for Kim's murder.
00:48:18
Good morning. Thank you all for coming out on a busy news day. Sunday, October 28, 2012, about 8.32, the 36th on the block of Eastbury Drive, 38-year-old
00:48:30
Kim Marie Dorsey was found dead by her fire-rescued husband. We actually received information after that.
00:48:40
Some of that information that we received led us to a person who we had some knowledge
00:48:46
of, a person who had in the past lived with the victim and her husband. That person was 31-year-old Lance Eugene Kirkpatrick.
00:48:54
With that information, we actually found over the next days after we got that, a subject who was an associate of Kirkpatrick's who cooperated with investigators in this case.
00:49:08
The cooperation he provided was substantial. It really broke our case and led us to make the arrest of Kirkpatrick for the murder.
00:49:19
of Kim Dorsey. Derek was beside himself when he found out that Lance was the one
00:49:24
that killed his wife. I howled like some wounded animal caught in a trap because of the betrayal.
00:49:31
He held up photographs of Kim to the camera and let the tears roll. This is the person you took
00:49:37
away from me Her family and everyone else Kim taught me so much I just wish I could have been a better person for her It took two years for Lance family to get to trial He made it a living hell for Kim
00:49:51
and her family members, dragging out the proceedings with lies and various tactics
00:49:56
in order to attempt to save himself from prison. In the end, it didn't work. He faced a courtroom
00:50:04
for the rape and murder of Kim Dorsey, and he was sentenced to three life terms for his heinous,
00:50:09
disgusting crime. Derek spoke directly at Lance during the sentencing. The man he had once
00:50:17
considered a buddy, so close that they even had sex with the same prostitute at the same time,
00:50:24
was now going to jail for murdering his wife. And yes, I did say prostitute, not sex worker.
00:50:33
Because no matter what your social media told you, fucking ain't work. For two and a half years, I've stood by and watched the defendant prolonging proceedings with lies,
00:50:43
besorging Kim's name, and even snitching on every person he knows in order to save his own skin.
00:50:48
Good luck with that reputation in prison, LJ. Derek attended grief counseling after Kim's death,
00:50:55
and began working with a psychologist who would later become his new wife. The two started a mental health practice together.
00:51:04
And Derek Dorsey is now director of operations for a local mental health care counseling facility.
00:51:10
And he's also still a firefighter, but is less than a year before retirement. He says, above all, he wants to thank everyone involved in his case.
00:51:18
The prosecutors, the detectives, he said that they were all amazing. Everyone in this tragic story was a different person than they presented to the world There a lot of that going around in 2024 especially after an election I might add Derek was a firefighter and a business owner
00:51:39
who had a beautiful house and a beautiful wife, just like David Byrne, yet behind her back, he was cheating on her
00:51:48
with many women and even having sex with prostitutes with his seedy employees. Kim seemed like a happy, successful businesswoman.
00:51:59
But inside, she was crumbling and fighting a terrible depression. Brian looked like a sketchy Floridian drug dealer and a roofer.
00:52:09
But he was the hero of this story. He rescued men who were down and out. And when one of them confessed to a murder, he immediately turned him in.
00:52:22
He actually had a conscience. Sometimes looks can be deceiving. And Lance? Well, Lance was a troubled, sad man
00:52:32
who may have been grateful for the help that the Dorseys gave him, but he committed a brutal, disgusting act towards Kim
00:52:41
and will never truly understand why. Monsters are real and could be anyone. Heroes are real, too.
00:52:53
And they don't always come looking like you'd expect. Thank you. That does it for yet another one.
00:53:48
Thank you so much for joining us once again. Just to let you know, there may be a few hurdles with our schedule in the coming weeks.
00:53:58
Just life stuff, things that kind of take my time away that cannot be helped, unfortunately, and I must be present for.
00:54:10
So apologies in advance if we don't put out a show here and there in the coming weeks.
00:54:16
It's not something I'm happy about or looking forward to, I assure you. Thank you.
