00:01:57
There's one of those big fluffy dogs with a whiskey barrel around his neck. He rescued us out of our cars because we drove up here.
00:02:04
We got stuck in the snow. There was a blizzard. There was, it seemed, all seemed lost.
00:02:10
Yeah. And then the St. Bernard came out of nowhere. Hashtag adopt, don't shop. Hashtag, did we save him or did he save us?
00:02:16
He saved us, literally. Hashtag dog is my co-pilot. So thank you for joining us.

00:02:36

00:02:43
if we need to go back to the pod loft for like the vibe and shit we can always do that
00:02:47

00:02:51

00:02:55

00:03:02
Yes, yes. And a lighting director. We'll get the dog to wear a little head. What are those little head things when you're going hiking?
00:03:09
Like a GoPro. Oh, like a miner's light? Yes. Okay. So St. Bernard in a miner's light.
00:03:14
We'll walk through the studio. God, this is going to be great. This is a minisode where we read you the shit that you send us.
00:03:21
That's right. These are all rando emails about interesting things of your lives.
00:03:25
Karen goes first. Are you ready? Yes. Why I can't trust ice cream trucks, my hometown story.
00:03:31
All right. Hello to Karen, Georgia, and Steven. Our family grew up in a large and friendly neighborhood in Columbia, Tennessee, outside of Nashville.
00:03:38
In the summers, our nights mainly consisted of playing outside until dark, and for my fat, Big Mac-loving fifth-grade self, waiting for the ice cream truck to stop by.
00:03:50
I'm still paying for the Big Macs, hence the nightly walks. That's right. One afternoon, way too late in the summer season, my sisters and I were in the house
00:03:58
working on homework, and we heard the ice cream truck coming around the neighborhood
00:04:02
and ran to ask for permission to meet it. The only running I ever did. The best.
00:04:09
My dad made me stay in to study, but my two younger sisters went out to buy us all ice cream.
00:04:14
Not there! Now listen to this. My dad and I noticed that it was taking longer than usual, and when the girls came back in
00:04:21
with our ice cream, they were carrying a piece of paper too. My dad asked what it was and took it
00:04:26
from them, noticing that a phone number was written on it. The girls cluelessly explained that the old
00:04:31
man who, uh, whom we had bought ice cream from many times before began asking them questions and
00:04:37
gave them the paper. He told them that if we ever wanted ice cream at any time of the day, even in
00:04:42
the winter, we could call him and he would come to our house. And he added that he was also available
00:04:47
for our slumber parties and we would be able to and he would be able to show up at any time
00:04:52
even at three in the morning no don't don't do that it's happened my dad immediately called the
00:04:57
police and we all ate our ice cream while we waited for them to show up all they could do
00:05:02
was tell us to let them know if he ever came back we never saw him again and needless to say it was
00:05:07
a long time before we could ever trust another ice cream man again to this day i still get
00:05:12
butterflies in my stomach when i hear the ice cream truck thinking about all the crazy things
00:05:16
that could have happened had that man ever come back. Stay sexy and always take ice cream from strangers,
00:05:22
but never invite them to your slumber parties. Sutherland. But what if he really was just this nice old man
00:05:28
who was so lonely and wanted to go to little girl slumber parties at three in the morning?
00:05:32
There's the overstep. Like a normal person. You've highlighted the issue because it's nice to be nice.
00:05:38
Sell ice cream, do what you want. Keep your fucking digits to yourself in all ways.
00:05:43
Abso-fucking-tively. Okay. We have a huge Ice Cream Man contingent listening to these episodes.
00:05:50
I know. So we really need them to hear us. That's right. Don't give your phone numbers out.
00:05:54
Okay This is called My Cousin Dad Was on America Most Wanted Hey y I just recently been put onto your podcast by my co And since then you been the soundtrack to my work week
00:06:05
This hometown, what's up, Central Jersey, they say, is everything but murder. It's pretty crazy.
00:06:11
Growing up, I remember lots of whispering about my aunt's new boyfriend, who my parents slash relatives believed to be a drug dealer.
00:06:17
I thought they were just being antiquated and discriminatory because of his tattoos.
00:06:22
But apparently I was also just a dumb 10 year old who knew nothing about anything.
00:06:26
Turns out my aunt's boyfriend and eventually father of my little cousin was a drug dealer.
00:06:31
One with an all caps tight grip on the cocaine production slash distribution within Newark and Elizabeth.
00:06:37
He didn't just fucking distribute that blow around Elizabeth and Newark. He didn't need a quick buck and, you know, he couldn't get a job and all this.
00:06:44
He made it. Was a kingpin. He had a science lab coat and he was pouring beakers back and forth making coke.
00:06:52
Production distribution. Hey. Holy shit. After serving time for kidnapping a rival gang member, throwing him in his own truck
00:06:59
and then firing at said truck, and that says homeboy survived, police began a five-month
00:07:05
investigation which led to 23 arrests and the seizure of seven pounds of cocaine.
00:07:10
Is that a lot of cocaine? It's plenty. 800 folds of heroin. I didn't know heroin came in folds.
00:07:15
These little pieces of People magazine all folded up. It's that thing where you're like, do you know what a group of ravens is called?
00:07:22
A heroin fold. It's a fold of heroin right outside my window. That's right. Two handguns and an AK-47 rifle from one of his trap houses.
00:07:32
Oh, more lingo. I love trap music. In Newark. He managed to escape arrest not once, not twice, but three times.
00:07:40
Twice by outrunning police through six lanes of traffic. Oh, did I mention he was a high school track star?
00:07:46
Yes. And then he completely disappeared in the summer of 2009. My aunt and cousins ran off into the sun.
00:07:53
Goodbye, down the freeway. Instead of going across traffic, he just went with it.
00:07:57
Went along with it. You have to go with traffic. And he's still running today. Forrest.
00:08:02
My aunt and cousin, who was about six years old at the time, knew nothing of his whereabouts
00:08:07
and didn't hear from him until he turned himself into the Union County Sheriff's Office in 2012,
00:08:11
citing that he wanted a chance to be in his son's life again. Aww, the drug dealer gone good.
00:08:16
There is redemption here. In July of 2017, he was sentenced to 37 years, of which he must serve 30 before being eligible for parole.
00:08:23
Jesus Christ. Damn, he must have been high up. It's crazy to think that this was the same man who'd often spare us,
00:08:28
my many cousins and I, a few bucks for the ice cream truck. Whoa. There's a theme here.
00:08:34
Automatic theme. Or to run down to the corner bodega. Though I guess when you're making nearly $700,000 a week,
00:08:41
you can spare some change. You better buy some ice cream. Stay sexy and maybe do some research
00:08:46
on your new boyfriend. Love, Lily. Nice. Amazing. Oh, I, you know, isn't that the human story
00:08:53
that we're all drug dealers and we're all guys that float you for some ice cream?
00:08:57
That's right. It's really nice. Just because you're a drug dealer doesn't make you a bad guy.
00:09:01
No, sometimes drug dealers just want you to get nice and high and make money off you.
00:09:06
We're kidding, everyone. We're kidding. This is not any truth. Don't do drugs. I love to do them very often.
00:09:12
Try not to do them that much. Don't have a dealer. Be more casual. Just borrow it at parties and from friends.
00:09:20
That's right. Keep using the word borrow. They'll love it. Here's the subject line.
00:09:27
His first responder story. Feel good. Oh, good. Hey, y'all. You keep saying, by the way, the lighthearted now when everyone's like,
00:09:33
lighthearted. It's question mark at the end of lighthearted. Every single one I got that said lighthearted was lighthearted.
00:09:40
lighthearted? It's kind of not. You tell me. There's still blood. Okay. Hey, y'all. I never
00:09:45
thought I'd have anything to share with you guys until recently when Karen was telling the story
00:09:49
in episode 146 about the jaws of life and what first responders did before they had access to
00:09:54
that tool. And this is my personal sidebar. I kind of pretty much got that wrong and heard from lots
00:09:59
and lots of very kind and experienced firemen who were like, here's actually how it works.
00:10:06
Firemen and women. Fire people. Is that what they're called? The people of fire.
00:10:13
Fire starters sent in emails. And basically, I got one tiny aspect of it right, but the actual shape and movement and everything else was wrong.
00:10:22
But we knew that was going to happen, didn't we? That's okay here. This is a safe space at exactly right offices.
00:10:28
Oh, we're going to burn some sage after this. That's right. And the fucking house down, too.
00:10:32
What if we accidentally just burned this whole place down? Like, sorry. neighbors. Okay. My dad's best friend who had always been like my uncle was a volunteer firefighter
00:10:42
in a small town in Minnesota. He's naturally big, but has never been a huge weightlifter or anything.
00:10:47
This is an important detail, I promise. Okay. When I was a kid, my dad's friend had to go to
00:10:52
the scene of a terrible car accident. Mom and her toddler were stuck inside a car, which was on fire.
00:10:58
While everyone else was trying to figure out how to get them out, he walked up to the car,
00:11:01
adrenaline pumping and rip the door off the car who knows what would have happened if he hadn't
00:11:06
done that it happened probably 25 years ago and i still get chills when i hear about it it's one of
00:11:11
the many reasons i love my like an uncle friend thanks for reading love you guys ssdgm julie
00:11:17
holy shit now there is a this reminded me there's a family story and it always changed of who is the
00:11:23
person that did it which is how you know it's an urban myth right um but i still love it anyway
00:11:28
that a the story was it was my grandmother and then somebody corrected me and was like no it was her mother
00:11:36
one of those got into a car stint they drove up kids trapped in the car the father trapped under the car
00:11:44
and she walked up and picked the car up and the guy got out from under the car and they modeled the jaws of life after this guy
00:11:50
and your great grandma yes and superman after my great grandma wow I know isn that good Oh but I heard I learned at Thanksgiving I told the story several times that my grandfather was killed in a bar fight got stabbed in a bar fight
00:12:06
I've told you that, right? Yeah, that's insane. I'm combining two stories. My sister's like, that's not true at all.
00:12:10
You're combining two stories. And even though he died under suspicious circumstances, it was not a knife fight in the alley behind
00:12:17
a bar. But did he get in a knife fight in the alley behind a bar once? We, it was, it was, he got rolled basically, but it was much less the jets and the sharks
00:12:26
and much more kind of tragic. And it's a different family story of somebody else that died in a knife fight outside a
00:12:31
bar. Well, you're going to need to like have this as your story one week. Yeah. Yeah.
00:12:36
Oh, it's amazing. Crazy. Awful. I'm sorry. No, no. I'm sorry for lying constantly.
00:12:41
I'm just going to tell you the beginning of this subject line. Okay. Uncle was a Mooney.
00:12:46
Okay. Is this an uncle theme? It might be. Did you do that on purpose? No, I think there's just been sending a lot.
00:12:52
I think because around Thanksgiving, probably a lot of family stuff coming in. Uncles, ice cream.
00:12:56
Great. Crime. Hey, MFM fam. So my uncle was in the Mooney cult for years. Let's call him Tom.
00:13:03
My mom told me this story back when I was probably 20 or so. When Tom was in college in North Carolina in the 70s, he went to a dinner slash lock-in.
00:13:11
Well, it turned out to be a brainwashing session for the Mooney cult. Which one was the Mooney cult?
00:13:18
The robes and shit? no that they're all robes there there's a lot of robes but the moonies were the ones that sold
00:13:25
they uh they get married on mass so it's reverend moon and then there's like five 50 000 people get
00:13:32
married and they never met the other person okay this is in this okay um the brain watching session
00:13:38
he quickly fell out of his day-to-day activities and spent all his time selling these magazines for
00:13:42
reverend moon my grandparents started to get worried because they hadn't heard from him in
00:13:46
weeks. My mom has a family. My mom has family in Tennessee. And one day their cousin Mark was at
00:13:51
the gas station in his town in Tennessee. When he sees his cousin, Tom, he kept shouting, Hey, Tom,
00:13:55
what are you doing in Tennessee? Tom completely ignored him. Mark said Thompson really out of it,
00:14:00
really spacey. Mark ran home to tell his parents and they called my grandparents and right away
00:14:04
told them to go back and get him. They all run back to the gas station and basically kidnap him
00:14:09
away from the Moonies and drive him back to North Carolina. Once there, my grandparents had a long
00:14:13
talk, not really sure how long he was home or what he said because he went back to school
00:14:17
and back to the Moonies. But this time he contacted his parents regularly. That's all
00:14:22
you got to do if you're going to join a cult. I guess that's true. But then also don't believe
00:14:26
that they're against you. Right. And don't join a cult. Step one, don't believe they're against you.
00:14:32
Step two. Step three, stop it. Stop it. So years down the road, my uncle Tom was married to his
00:14:37
wife Barb with 300 other people by Reverend Moon. So Tom and Barb start having kids and a couple
00:14:43
in the cult couldn't have kids. So Reverend Moon told Tom that he and Barb are to have a child and
00:14:48
it will be given to the other couple. Oh no. All caps. So they fucking did. Oh no. Which is kind
00:14:53
of lovely, but not for the cult. Not with a cult. Well, not. Also, it's your own kid. I don't know.
00:14:58
Yeah. You're too, it's lovely if it's far away and you didn't want the child. You shouldn't be
00:15:02
able to give your kid away like that. No. Well, I don't think you are. I think they're operating
00:15:07
outside the law in that church. No, but I mean like personally, be like, great. We'll have another
00:15:11
ones you shouldn't agree to it yeah it shouldn't be fine with you no there's some walls that have
00:15:16
been broken down that can't be built absolutely i'm not saying adoption is bad it's a beautiful
00:15:20
thing that's not what this is it's the inter cult adoption that we are talking about right we love
00:15:25
paperwork a few of his kids are still involved with the moonies holy shit the one the wild thing
00:15:32
is no one in our family knew about this until tom slipped up and said something about brett
00:15:36
Oh, who the fuck is Brett? Everyone asks. My uncle has long since left the cult and his wife,
00:15:42
but Brett does know who his biological parents and four brothers are. Wow. Thanks for taking the time to read this,
00:15:48
and I can't wait to see you in Milwaukee, SSTGM Amelia. Wow. Crazy. Yeah, that cult just doesn't go away.
00:15:56
They're Mooney. They're all over the GD map. There is a really good made-for-TV movie that I've already talked about on the show.
00:16:04
So if you're interested in the Moonies and the ways of how you get into something like that,
00:16:08
and I will tell you what it is after I can't remember. Wait one second. There it is.
00:16:14
Ticket to Heaven. Ticket to Heaven? It's a movie called Ticket to Heaven, and I swear to God, I don't know what it's on.
00:16:20
It's very old. I think it's from the 90s. No, 81. Nice. It's so old. You have to watch it.
00:16:26
Okay. One of my better recommendations so far. Just really pulled it off. It was slick.
00:16:33
It was smooth. The subject line is the ghost of Karen Carpenter. Oh my God. Are you ready?
00:16:37
I am ready. Hello, Karen. Do I hear your name after? God, I keep interrupting you.
00:16:40
I'm so sorry. No, no, no. Are you kidding? That's all I've done this whole time.
00:16:44
Hello, Karen, Georgia, Stephen, and pets. I've been meaning to write in this story for a while now, but it wasn't until today when
00:16:51
Karen mentioned the ghost of Karen Carpenter on the mini-sode that I knew I had to share
00:16:55
with you all. My dad has worked as a mortician his entire working career, starting in Idaho and later
00:17:01
in LA after he and my mom moved to Southern California in the 80s. He has had so many wonderful stories
00:17:07
including burying Rita Hayworth. Wow. I wouldn't call that wonderful. Is that what you're laughing about?
00:17:16
Just the celebration of the death of Rita Hayworth. I had a wonderful day at work today, darling.
00:17:21
Let me tell you. I was finally able to bury that woman. I always hated her work.
00:17:27
She's my greatest rival in the mortician industry. Okay. Sorry, we know what you mean.
00:17:33
Wonderful stories including burying Rita Hayworth in parentheses of which there are
00:17:37
newspaper photos of him carrying her casket down the stairs of the church preceding her funeral.
00:17:42
Wow. Living in a haunted apartment of a mortuary where doors would open and close.
00:17:47
Yes. Fuck. And picking up a man who died at a sugar factory. Parentheses. I'll spare you the details.
00:17:53
Oh, he fell in a thing. I bet you he fell in a thing He smothered on sugar That how I going to die in my living room I don want to ever be in a vat of things and get stuck in it Trying to swallow
00:18:05
Trying to be like, Whenever I read those stories, I get fucking, I get so bummed.
00:18:10
It's the worst. It's the worst. Let's talk about it. It also, it leaves this little bit of a funny joke mark at the end of your death,
00:18:18
which sucks. There's no dignity in it. Right. It's just a huge bummer. It's a terrible death.
00:18:22
And then a little bit of like today and weird news. Like I fucking died. You asshole.
00:18:27
Like your story about the molasses fucking flood. It's like, wow, that's hilarious.
00:18:30
And you're like, but people die. That's not as hilarious. It's not hilarious at all.
00:18:34
It's like somebody was standing there going about their business and then a 40 foot wave
00:18:39
of molasses killed them. Yeah. The end. And then every, yeah, et cetera, et cetera.
00:18:44
That's what this whole podcast is. Can you fucking believe it? Can you fucking believe this?
00:18:48
Um, okay. But it's his one story about Karen Carpenter that has always fascinated me.
00:18:54
When Karen first passed away, she was buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress, California.
00:18:59
But in 2003, her family decided to disinter her body and bury her at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village.
00:19:06
Oh, that's a much better place. It's so much better for everybody. A longtime industry friend of my dad's was responsible for picking Mrs. Carpenter up.
00:19:14
I think it's missed. Carpenter up and transporting her to her second and final resting place.
00:19:20
While en route from Cemetery A to Cemetery B, his hearse broke down on the side of the road.
00:19:25
And what might you ask came on the radio just that very moment. The sweet serenading voice of Karen Carpenter singing, we've only just begun.
00:19:35
Oh my God. This is such a dad story. I love it. Because that's the funniest possible song that could play.
00:19:40
I know my dad's friend was spooked by the incident, but I like to think it was Karen's way of having a little fun from the great beyond.
00:19:47
She's like, let me have a minute not in a grave and just like chill out here. Yes.
00:19:51
Can you just pull over by the side of the road and I'm going to prank you? Because I just want one last prank.
00:19:55
Yes. Thank you for all that you do, especially being so vocal about mental health and making the rest of us murderinos feel like we're not alone.
00:20:01
Stay sexy and watch out for ghosts of 1970 pop stars playing practical jokes. Devin.
00:20:06
Amazing. While the world watches the stars at the FIFA World Cup this summer, Hyundai has its eyes on the next generation of talent.
00:20:14
The future soccer stars who are already turning heads at age 14. Making plays that end up on everyone's feed, scoring from angles that don't make sense, rewriting record books that barely had time to gather dust.
00:20:25
Because Next doesn't wait for an invitation, and Hyundai doesn't either. Hyundai has always moved the future within reach.
00:20:30
Hyundai did it by making advanced safety standard on every vehicle. Hyundai did it by engineering EVs with ultra-fast charging capability.
00:20:38
And Hyundai continues doing it every day. From robotics that change how people live to young athletes changing the game,
00:20:44

Goodbye. That's amazing. Okay, this is just a nice email. Okay. It's not a hometown, but...
00:23:01
So, update. Portland girl whose house burned down. Remember the girl we met? We met a girl at one of the Portland shows who's really lovely, and her fucking house
00:23:10
had just burned down. It had just burned down. Was it the same day or like that week?
00:23:13
It was like that week. Yeah. It was a lot. I think she said something about it in here, so let's see.
00:23:17
Hello to some of my favorite beings on Earth. That means you too, Steven. Oh. Oh.
00:23:21
I just wanted to update you guys and give a few more details on my situation. I met you both at the Portland live show and briefly mentioned my house burning down and how amazing the Portland murderinos have been.
00:23:31
So she, the Portland murderinos like helped her with everything. Not only did they immediately jump into action and get me food, clothing, cat supplies and toiletries.
00:23:40
They were also there for me emotionally. I have horrible chronic anxiety and I know I would not have made it through the past month calmly if it weren't for my amazing murderino friends.
00:23:48
I'm settling to a new apartment finally and my kitty Crookshanks is still a hilarious asshole.
00:23:54
which is a good thing, of course. On top of all this amazingness, they have come through yet again
00:24:00
coworker and fellow murderino who has been harassed lately by her ex-boyfriend. The Portland murderinos have given her lawyerino help, sent her a doorbell camera, and sat with
00:24:09
her for five hours at the courthouse while she obtained a restraining order against him.
00:24:14
Amazing. I just had to let you know how much we both appreciate this community you have created
00:24:18
and how incredible the women of this group are. I'm extremely grateful to them and to you guys.
00:24:23
Thank you for being wonderful and helping us to SSDGM. P.S. I'm originally from Tennessee and have only lived in Portland for five months.
00:24:29
And the community here is literally the only reason I have friends in the city. That's amazing.
00:24:34
Love Jess. That's so good. Wow. What a beautiful ending. I remember her. I know.
00:24:39
And I love that she was saying how she was just new to the city. And like, those are the people who came to fucking help her.
00:24:45
Yeah. It's incredible. That's beautiful. And I would want to say, cause she said she wouldn't have been able to get through it calmly
00:24:50
without those people. Yeah. But you also have to remember, you're not supposed to get through really tragic events
00:24:55
in your life calmly. True. This is when you get to freak out and you get to be dependent.
00:24:59
And don't hold yourself to those ridiculous standards. Something terrible happened to you.
00:25:04
You're lucky enough to have people that are there to help you, but you're not supposed to be fucking calm.
00:25:08
If you need to scream at the sky, your house burned down. You get to. That's really lovely.
00:25:12
That's true. I appreciate that. I'm always trying to keep my shit together and not like seem like a,
00:25:16
like a monster or depressed person in front of Vince. But it's like, well, sometimes I'm a fucking depressed person.
00:25:22
Right. And it's like in trying to control it in some ways, you can't control it in other ways.
00:25:26
It's, it's a nice, like noble idea. Yeah. But then it just creates too much pressure.
00:25:31
Right. You know what I mean? There's no need dealing with your fucking house burning.
00:25:34
And you don't expect him to do that for you. He doesn't have to be like Mr. Perfect all the time.
00:25:40
It'd be, I just want to say it'd be nice. You know, I just want to say one quick message to it would be nice.
00:25:44
You could just try tighten up your game a little bit for me for this marriage I not in All right Send us your emails at myfavoritemurder at gmail And thank you for sending these wonderful stories in and stay sexy
