MFM Minisode 113

March 11, 2019 /

This mini-sode of My Favorite Murder features stories about a forensic dentist, a swinger party incident, and a shocking discovery of human remains in a front yard. Hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark read listener-submitted tales that highlight bizarre and unsettling events.

One story involves a dentist who shares a case about a biker's remains found in a septic tank, preserved due to bleach poured in by the killer. The hosts discuss the implications of such discoveries and the unique challenges faced by forensic professionals.

Another listener recounts a humorous yet terrifying experience when a naked man mistakenly entered her apartment, believing it to be a swinger party. The hosts reflect on the absurdity of the situation and the importance of safety.

Additionally, a chilling story from Connecticut reveals how a woman's front yard became a crime scene after human remains were discovered, leading to the realization that the bodies belonged to a missing couple, murdered by their son.

The episode concludes with an exciting announcement about a new podcast, Jensen and Holes: The Murder Squad, featuring true crime investigations and citizen detective work.

This is exactly right. You're listening to a podcast, so you're doing something else too, like maybe scrolling home

that's what house hunting has become. But Redfin isn't built for endless browsing.

It's built to help you find and own a home. Redfin agents close twice as many deals as other agents,

00:02:10
It's mini. That's Karen. That's Georgia. And that's still Karen. Oh. And that remains Georgia.
00:02:18
We read your stories. Listen, look, the very end of this episode, we have a very fucking crazy special surprise for you.
00:02:24
That's bananas that we've been waiting for. That we've been ever. I mean, waiting for so long to tell you and told you we've been waiting.
00:02:31
You know that. You've been teased so long about this that you don't care anymore.
00:02:35
Just get through this one last bullshit. Because you're going to care again. Exactly.
00:02:40
It's going to make your heart grow two sizes too small. And here's a hint. That's exactly right.
00:02:45
And that's exactly right. Okay, you go first. guys, here's my first, I was going to say number one, but that's not true.
00:02:53
How would we pick? I mean, truly. I'm not going to read the subject line. It's a giveaway.
00:02:59
Guys, really, let's be a little more mysterious in our subject line. Yeah, but then they won't know what to pull, you know?
00:03:05
It's maybe an alternative subject line. That's right. You can give the one that you want to give so people know what the story is about,
00:03:13
but then how about show line? Right. The show subject line that's a teaser. Great.
00:03:17
And then Stephen could be like, this is okay. Here we go. Look, this is a meeting that we're supposed to be having off mic, but we're bringing you
00:03:23
behind the scenes. Behind the scenes of Exactly Right. It's so boring. Okay. Hi, everyone.
00:03:30
And also Stephen's mustache. I went, so I went to the dentist yesterday to get some cavities filled and she casually
00:03:37
asked me if I was doing anything fun this weekend. I said no. But, but that next weekend I was driving down from Reno where I live with some friends to
00:03:46
see my favorite podcast live. I told her what MFM is and she got really excited. Turns out my
00:03:52
dentist wanted to be a forensic dentist, sorry, and had taken a bunch of forensic dentistry classes.
00:03:58
Dude. While she was numbing my face, she told me about this case she'd learned about in class
00:04:02
and actually examined the remains. In the 80s, this biker had disappeared, but since it's Nevada,
00:04:08
a state that was basically created to make it easy to hide a body, they weren't able to find
00:04:13
him and it was kind of forgotten about until recently. In the interim, a family had bought
00:04:18
a house in Virginia City, which is nearby. That's where my murder was started. Oh, that's right.
00:04:24
Vegas last night. Yeah, that's right. A quick sidebar. Last night, we did a big show in Vegas.
00:04:28
Thank you so much, Las Vegas, for being there and everybody who came. But also the time changed. We
00:04:35
lost an hour. And George and I look like we're in a cold commercial right now. We're both like,
00:04:40
we're both ruddy and run down and we're both wearing weird bathrobes. How did we,
00:04:46
I went to bed at four in the morning. Yeah. I played some Buffalo. Buffalo. How fun was it?
00:04:52
I won money. Okay. Yeah. It was really fun. I won no money. I just kept putting in $5 bills and immediately they'd just be gone.
00:04:59
Cause they know that like, she's not going to stick around. She doesn't even know what she's doing.
00:05:03
Okay. And now we're back. Okay. Here we are. Begin. Um, Ma, in the interim, a family had bought a house in Virginia City, which is nearby, and they'd been having issues with their septic tank.
00:05:15
Oh, no. Yes. They decided to drain it to see if that would help. But the pump got clogged with a boot.
00:05:22
Dude. Which is a huge deal. If they find anything in a septic tank that could be part of a body, it basically becomes an investigation.
00:05:30
Wow. I would hope so. You gotta. They're searching through and they find a necklace and then some clothing and then a remarkably well-preserved body.
00:05:39
Holy shit. Literally, holy shit. The whole body. You get the rest. Apparently, the person who killed him had shot him and put his body in their septic tank.
00:05:50
But then they poured bleach into the tank. Septic tanks operate by having a specific biome which is made of microorganisms that break everything down When the killer poured bleach into the tank they killed off the microorganisms and it stopped decomp almost completely Amazing
00:06:05
The person then left the house. Goodbye. And it had sat empty until a few years ago when the family moved in and discovered the body.
00:06:11
The body was mostly unrecognizable, but they were still able to pull his dental records and confirmed it was him.
00:06:18
And my adorable dentist was there doing the work. I tried not to think about the fact that her hands
00:06:23
have been in a super dead mouth and now we're in mine. That have been in a septic tank
00:06:27
for years too. Right, but that's what soaps are for. Okay. Okay, fine. Okay. Anyway, that's
00:06:35
my Nevada hometown. So incredibly excited to see you all in Vegas next week. Stay sexy and don't
00:06:39
put bleach in your septic tank. No. Helen. Amazing. I know, isn't that good? That's so good. Oh, you
00:06:45
just never know about people what their weird shit is. Yeah. Literally. I mean literally okay go on and on also that it also just connects to my thing of things being hidden
00:06:55
where whether it's a box of beautiful treasure that you don't know is there from the 1700s
00:07:00
or just a perfectly preserved biker because shit's everywhere god damn it stuff is everywhere
00:07:05
it's everywhere all over the world it's i just want to know i just want to be a metal detectorist
00:07:11
I just want to be x-ray specs. X-ray specs. What? Okay. Okay. Here's one called Swinger Party Gone Wrong.
00:07:22
Yes. You ready for this? I am. Okay. Put your papers down. Okay. Sorry. I thought I lost my place.
00:07:28
Okay. Hello, Karen, Georgia, and Steven. So I never thought this was too big of a deal until I started listening to your podcast and realized how this could have ended so badly.
00:07:37
So I was 22 years old and I had just moved to Austin, Texas from LA. It was my first time living in a little one-bedroom apartment all by myself.
00:07:45
Around 10 p.m. one night, I ran out to my car to grab something and went straight back into my apartment, not locking the door behind me.
00:07:51
I sat down on the couch with my cat and was about to start a movie. Not even a minute later, my door right next to the TV I was watching opened up completely, and in the doorway stood a man I had never seen.
00:08:02
A naked man. No! I was shocked. I couldn't even move, and we seriously stared at each other for a good 10 seconds before I jumped off the couch and said,
00:08:11
Who the fuck are you? Trying to sound tough and intimidating, even though I'm just this tiny girl with nothing but a cat as protection.
00:08:18
The man then said, and he was being completely serious, Is this the swingers party?
00:08:22
Oh, no. What? Does this look like a swingers party? I said no, then he left, and I could not stop laughing.
00:08:30
I called my dad right after and told him what happened as I'm still laughing. My dad, however, did not find it funny.
00:08:36
No, I bet he didn't. He didn't believe that he was looking for a swinger's party.
00:08:39
He thought he was testing the waters with me and checking out my apartment. I went from laughing to terrified in 0.5 seconds.
00:08:46
I called the police, gave the description of the man, told them the situation, and stayed at my girlfriend's house the next two nights.
00:08:52
The man ended up being my gay next-door neighbor, who had just moved in that week, so I ended up seeing him a lot,
00:08:58
and he acted like nothing had ever happened. Sure. So weird. I avoided him at all costs.
00:09:04
So lock your damn doors always. Stay sexy and don't go to swingers parties or go walking around an apartment complex naked.
00:09:11
Mandy. I mean, for real, I feel like any swinger would tell you you don't arrive at the party totally new.
00:09:18
Like, are you new with this? A little bit of romance. First of all, you have to go to the buffet.
00:09:23
You have to go put your hot dish down at the buffet. Does it not remind you of something I would do to make you laugh?
00:09:29
Yes. Show up at your hotel room. is this a swingers oh shit this is a swinger's oh this is a family of four georgia have you met
00:09:37
my college roommate or i got the room next door but what's crazy to me is that guy must have been
00:09:43
on drugs because he was going to his neighbors and going is this the swingers party where it's like
00:09:47
so sorry you you got invited to a swingers party at your neighbor's house and you didn't know
00:09:52
where it was and b uh he owed her an edible arrangement the next day and i'm sorry minimum
00:10:00
With fucking chocolate covered strawberries and everything. And a nice card. Send an I'm sorry arrangement.
00:10:08
You send a card that says, dear neighbor, my balls are none of your business. And I made them your business.
00:10:14
Wow. That must have been scary for you. Yeah. Goodbye. Please forgive me. I was on ketamine.
00:10:20
Love, Barry. Oh, Barry. Always walking around naked. Barry and his balls. Barry and his balls.
00:10:26
You're at the party again. he shows up at the apartment building Christmas party.
00:10:31
No, Barry, this is not Swingers. It's just a holiday party. Or maybe they were just watching the movie Swingers,
00:10:37
but he wanted to do it naked. Super into Jon Favreau. That makes way more sense.
00:10:43
Okay. The subject line of this is, my friend had dead bodies in her front yard, not lighthearted.
00:10:48
Oh, dear. Hello, Karen and Georgia and friends. I've been listening to your mini-sodes all day
00:10:52
and had to share this quite fucked up story with y'all. I live in a small town in Connecticut.
00:10:56
Oh, sorry, then it's a story with you all. There's no y'all in Connecticut. I live in a small town in Connecticut that from the outside just looks like the biggest scandal would be that Deborah wore the wrong tennis skirt to the country club.
00:11:10
Fucking Deborah. However, the shit goes down. There had been talk that my town's elementary school librarian and her husband had gone missing.
00:11:19
And soon the local paper wrote an article about it stating them as missing persons.
00:11:23
We were all kind of weirded out, but thought, hey, if I was an elementary school librarian, I'd probably want to get the hell out of Dodge for a while also.
00:11:31
A couple of weeks went by and there was no sign of them until their pickup truck was found at a park, a park and ride off the highway with its window shattered.
00:11:41
Sketchy. A couple of days later, my friend was driving home and was stopped by, was stopped just at the top of her road by a shit ton of police officers.
00:11:49
Side note, everyone has that friend that bad and weird shit always happens to. This is that friend So true Poor baby She asked the officers what was up and they told her there was an investigation going on when she got closer to her house there were even more police cars and a
00:12:05
fucking helicopter flying overhead they had found human remains in her fucking front yard her front
00:12:10
yard was connected on the side to a property with an abandoned house so it wasn't directly in her
00:12:16
front yard but her adjacent yard but you get the idea anyway human remains totally that's how it's
00:12:21
It turns out the remains were the librarian and her husband. Long story short, they had a recycling business in the next town where their son also worked.
00:12:31
He had been a drug addict and the librarian and her husband had just decided to cut him out of their will.
00:12:36
Apparently, this dude got pissed, shot both his parents and decided to dump their bodies in my friend's front yard.
00:12:43
Another side note, this yard is on the main road. So I don't know what he was thinking, but that that was a poor choice if he was trying to get away with it.
00:12:51
I mean, many poor choices. So many. From the beginning. Just a series of them. Yeah.
00:12:56
First one was them having a child. Don't ever do it. And then picking up that pipe.
00:13:03
He just smoked a really obnoxious tobacco pipe that was just irritating to look at.
00:13:08
To this day, my friends and I will still bring up to my friend, hey, remember when there were dead bodies in your front yard?
00:13:14
Stay sexy and don't cut your psycho son out of your will or you will end up dead in our front yard.
00:13:19
Hannah. Oy vey. Yeah. That's rough. It's, yeah. Really. I mean, week after week, we justify my choice not to have children.
00:13:28
For real. Truly. Like, that's what this podcast is. This podcast is basically two gals sending you the message, it's time to wrap things down on this planet.
00:13:36
Double up on your birth control. We're done here. Yeah, we're done. The earth is telling us we're done.
00:13:42
We're telling each other we're done. There's signs, red flags. The earth is like red fucking flag.
00:13:46
And we're like, I don't know. Is that pink? All of humanity is like, we can't figure out new ways to kill each other.
00:13:52
Okay. I think it's time to wrap it down. Okay. Here is. Too dark? I haven't. Too bad.
00:13:58
Then you're on the wrong podcast. Helping my neighbor, SSDGM. Hello, Karen, Georgia, Stephen, and Associated Pets.
00:14:05
Partly due to my true crime obsession, I like to know who my neighbors are, which cars they
00:14:09
drive, and I always have an ear out in case anything is suspicious. Okay. Yes. I am also a bit nosy.
00:14:15
I kind of love that. Yeah. I was lying in bed. Right. I was lying in bed watching television one night when I heard a woman screaming that didn't match the audio.
00:14:24
Sure enough, when I paused the show, the screaming continued. Oh, no. I immediately looked out my bedroom window, which overlooks the parking lot of my apartment building.
00:14:31
I recognized one of my neighbor's cars backing up while a shirtless man was holding onto the driver's door, throwing punches into the window and attempting to pull the door open.
00:14:41
I instantly opened my window and screamed, I'm calling the cops, which I think is I've yelled that at fights before.
00:14:47
The cops are coming. Just that's a good way to break shit up. Yeah, that's right.
00:14:51
And the guy took off. I got dressed as fast as humanly possible and flew downstairs, ran out and got her to get out of the car and back into the building in case he came back where we immediately called 911.
00:15:02
Turns out she had just gotten into the car and paused to turn her iPod on when out of nowhere, this guy opened her door and tried to take her seatbelt off and pull her out of the vehicle.
00:15:11
Jesus. Straight up Grand Theft Auto style. She started reversing the car in an attempt to knock him off her.
00:15:18
And that's when I yelled down. The police response was quick and they brought in dogs and a ton of cars.
00:15:23
They ended up finding the guy a few blocks north. I'm so glad I heard the scream and was able to help and look out for a fellow young woman.
00:15:29
She was okay physically, just extremely shaken up. SSDGM, always help out when you can.
00:15:35
Keep track of your neighbors. And please, please lock your door as soon as you get into your vehicle, Melissa.
00:15:39
Yes. That's such a good point, Melissa. And it's really important. just there's no reason not to if you're in your car your home base click always done i'd like to
00:15:50

00:16:04

Trauma nurse. The subject line, sorry, is trauma nurse attempted murder story. Oh, dear. Trauma nurse attempted. I'm so tired that I can't read.
00:18:19
It's truly the tiredest it's ever been in here. It's fun. Hey, all. I'm finally caught up with all the episodes, and I'm surprised there aren't more stories from first responders or nurses.
00:18:29
We had a little run there, but yeah, we haven't gotten a lot. Hey, listen. You finally caught up, and then you're here to give your complaints? You're here to fucking say, here's what's lacking?
00:18:40
Here's what's missing in your podcast. I mean, thank you for all the feedback. We've seen some shit.
00:18:47
That's very true. And most of us have a dark sense of humor. Also true. So you better be fucking laughing at me attacking you.
00:18:53
This story was a pivotal moment in my nursing career. I work in a trauma ICU. I had heard on the news earlier that day in a nearby small town, a man shot his ex-wife,
00:19:04
her boyfriend, and his own daughter, and that he was on the run. Thankfully, all three lived.
00:19:10
Oh, good. Yes. Later that day, the police were on a high-speed chase with him and finally caught up.
00:19:16
The shooter got out of the car, took his handgun, and shot himself in the head. He did it right in front of the local hospital.
00:19:23
So they were able to keep him alive. And here's where I come in. Oh, my God. The man was stabilized at the local hospital and transferred to me in the ICU at a larger hospital.
00:19:33
He had a through-and-through gunshot wound to the head, so no chance of recovery.
00:19:38
But there was a chance we could still harvest his organs. So I worked on this man to keep him alive all night.
00:19:44
He was on the ventilator along with other medications to keep him alive. Those with a weak stomach, cover your ears.
00:19:50
Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'll give you a cover your ears pause. Steven, cover your ears.
00:19:54
Oh, wait. His ears are already covered with headphones. He just burst into tears.
00:19:59
I can't cover them anymore than I already have. This is just one sentence, so you mute it for five seconds.
00:20:05
Or say la, la, la, really loud. Okay, go. This dude had brain matter coming out of his nose.
00:20:10
Ew. and we're back. I was trying to keep alive a motherfucker that had just tried to kill three people,
00:20:18
including his own young daughter. It was really a bizarre experience for me. That's nursing.
00:20:23
Now you take care of the best people and the worst, a lot of the worst. I read that.
00:20:30
That was amazing. A lot of the worst. This man was not an organ donor on his license,
00:20:35
but his next of kin, his older daughter made the decision to make him an organ donor.
00:20:40
Scrape that motherfucker clean. Yes. It was a small bit of justice that we were able to help people on the transplant plant
00:20:47
list with his death. Please become an organ donor. I agree. Yes, please do. We're still in C-Mail.
00:20:56
That was not me. But I agree. I won't go into too many details, but it is very rare that someone who passes in the hospital
00:21:03
is even a candidate for organ donation. Love you guys and everything you do. Z. Amazing.
00:21:09
it's such a good point and you know what took me so long I was in my 20s when I became a donor
00:21:15
and like just check that little box because I think everyone thinks of it as superstitious
00:21:20
you know that thing of like well as soon as I do it then I'm going to die something's going to happen to me or it's like well that doesn't
00:21:25
exist this world isn't even fucking real like everything is fine just you're going to be a better person just put
00:21:31
like click donor box nothing is real nothing's real and also it just there is a way you can be generous past,
00:21:41
right? Instead of standing around fearing your own death, you can look at it in a different way,
00:21:45
maybe just briefly and be like, this could actually be, there are people who need spleens,
00:21:50
eyeballs, livers and kidneys and livers. Probably. I don't know everything. And you know what else?
00:21:57
It'll actually help your family after because they'll think of you like, not as an asshole as you were in your life.
00:22:03
I don't know where I'm going. You will make your family stop hating your guts. Those stories, your literal guts, because they'll be in someone else's fucking...
00:22:10
They'll finally be able to love your guts. Those stories of people whose kid dies, but they get the organs, and they go,
00:22:18
gotta go meet the person who has their son's heart. Unbelievable. And it's like, that's real.
00:22:23
That one video where the dad meets the boy with his daughter's heart is like, it really
00:22:30
is still her heart. I know. It's the most beautiful thing of all time. She lived with it for...
00:22:34
