00:02:40
Yeah, we have time for a hometown murder. Before you, no pointing yet. No pointing yet.
00:02:47
Yeah, save it. Karen has to tell you some stuff. This is important. these rules, these are for you.
00:02:54
And us. And us, mostly. Mostly us. Okay, you know the ones like you can't read it
00:03:00
and you can't be so drunk you can't tell it and it needs to be local. We don't want to hear about shit that happened in Tennessee.
00:03:08
To Ohio would be great. Right, yeah, yeah, statewide. Everyone hates you. Okay, you have to remember that if you get picked,
00:03:17
everyone else in the room hates you. So don't fucking, that's not the time to shout out all your cousins and stuff.
00:03:22
Like, just get up here and tell your story like you are on a clock because you are.
00:03:26
Ready? Go. Okay, I'm picking, I'm picking, I'm picking, I'm picking. Can we get the lights up a little bit?
00:03:32
Whoa, hi. She looks mad at you. You here in the leather, yeah, or whatever that jacket is.
00:03:40
Go this way to Vince. Yes. All right. Don't be mad at her. okay you can turn the lights down yeah turn those lights down please she'll freak out
00:03:51
hi my god what's her name um hi my name's lauren hi come over here lauren hi fancy pants
00:04:00
can i say that i bought this bow tie specifically for the show i'm glad you recognized it can i tell you a secret yes or it's not it's an open secret but um
00:04:15
This is the pattern on the back of my album cover. Oh, that's right. Hi. High five, everybody.
00:04:21
Sorry, that was about me. Where are you from? I'm from Cincinnati, born and raised.
00:04:28
They love Cincinnati. But now living here in Columbus. Oh, okay. Yes. A little for everyone.
00:04:35
Yep. What's your hometown? Okay, so this is the story of my biological father being the prime suspect in the murder
00:04:44
of his best friend in college. Okay. And just for a little bit of side note, this was like two years after I was born,
00:04:53
so life shit won right after the other happened. But okay, so this was like 96, 97,
00:05:00
happened at Capitol University. Go accused. Yeah, okay. So my bio dad, his best friend was Tony,
00:05:12
who was the only other man in the art therapy department at the time. So obviously they're going to have to bond together
00:05:18
because they're the only two men in that department. Yeah. Okay, so he was the last person to see him alive.
00:05:26
And so he's dropping him off at his apartment at 1 in the morning because you do weird shit at 1 in the morning.
00:05:32
I think you said they were getting haircuts or whatever. You know. Late night supercuts?
00:05:41
Who the fuck knows? fuck knows is right anyway so he drops him off and then his best friend is proceeded to be carjacked
00:05:50
and like forced to empty out his entire atm um by a group of three miners by the way who apparently each had a rap sheet like a whole page long each Anyway so then they like shoot him execution style in the back of the head
00:06:09
And then find his car three days later on like Cleveland Avenue, which honestly is no surprise.
00:06:15
It's like a sketchy area. Oh, okay. You guys hate Cleveland. And not anywhere near Capitol University at all.
00:06:22
Oh, okay. um but like so while they're investigating this my bio dad is put through all this bullshit
00:06:29
so like when they come to question him they take him out of his ceramics class and if you work with
00:06:35
ceramics you know that you're gonna wear the like worst clothing possible so they put him in handcuffs
00:06:43
and put him in the back of the squad car and take him to like the like to interview him and whatever
00:06:48
and so like he's looking hella guilty and like they fingerprint him and everything overalls
00:06:53
and that day they were working with red clay which is very unfortunate um but so like they
00:07:00
don't let him wash his hands and like drop them back off at class and so like his like his next
00:07:06
class the teacher asks him to hand out all the graded tests so each one has like a just a little
00:07:11
thick thumbprint on the corner and like so now he's looking hella guilty and like at one point
00:07:18
he's like rounding a corner and he hears the like uh principal of like the college or whatever
00:07:23
talking shit about him and like it's bad because like he's also like the son of a lutheran minister
00:07:29
and this is a jesuit college oh perfect revenge yeah exactly but like he clearly didn't do it is
00:07:36
what i'm saying and like he clearly did do it is what you're saying that's what you just said um
00:07:42
but like i'm pretty sure the kids that did it are now out of prison because they were minors at the
00:07:47
time that they did it do you know how young uh i don't know teenagers for sure shit wow how did
00:07:53
they get caught um i think they just followed the evidence i don't get it damn shit
00:08:02
can i end on a joke it's a really quick one of course okay this is kind of an awful joke you're
00:08:08
gonna feel slightly bad for you okay um so why do they not tell jokes about the reverend jim jones
00:08:15
Why? Because the punchline is too long. Oh my god! Girl. Great job. You earned that thing.
00:08:26
You fucking earned that thing. Great job. Great job. There's Vince. Amazing. Wow, that's how you do a fucking hometown.
00:08:39
Fuck. And then just end with just a touch of light humor. beautiful a joke that we would get hate mail for but was adorable
00:08:48
you do it so we appreciate that because i want nothing more than to say that joke
00:08:54
every day of my life hi hi hi don't trip don't fall down hello hello oh look look at her skirt hi it's a dress are they falling all the way
00:09:09
It's paranoid. Careful. You don't wear stay-up stockings. It's okay, guys. Wait.
00:09:15
Look at it. This is... No, you guys have the cutest... What are you doing? Stay in the forest.
00:09:22
Don't get hurt. Stay out of the forest. This is so awesome. Is this from Dangerfield?
00:09:27
I know. This is so cute. We're acting like the one store we've been to is the only store in Melbourne.
00:09:33
Is this from the one place we've been to? Yeah. I heard you guys don't have any others.
00:09:38
What's... what's your name i'm rebecca hi rebecca where are you from everyone will cheer for you thank you
00:09:43
the yarrow valley all right i knew it yeah you knew it yeah what's your hometown okay so i have
00:09:52
a few but i'll just do one if it's really good you can do more yeah or if it's really bad okay go
00:09:58
ahead um i won't use exact names because i still live next door to my mom so weird how you can't
00:10:04
see anyone out there that's so creepy i know right no i know it's better it's better yeah just look
00:10:09
up into the light days off um so basically my mom and dad moved to an to cold stream i don't know if
00:10:18
you know cold stream of course we know cold stream they know it um along the maroon to highway so
00:10:24
basically high traffic area and they start building this house and there's an old little barn out the
00:10:32
back a little bit creepy and basically where they're going to build the house there's a big
00:10:39
tree out the front big cherry blossom massive cherry blossom my dad's like i really think i
00:10:45
need to cut this down why well where the house was going to be so they could keep the old barn
00:10:50
oh right yeah yeah okay so the neighbor comes over and he's this big massive guy big beard
00:10:57
my dad's like a skinny kind of crocodile dandy oh yeah we know him we know him yeah yeah yeah
00:11:04
so you imagine this other guy that's massive and my dad's kind of skinny I don't get control problem anyway this guy tells him don't cut down the tree no matter what you do
00:11:17
do not cut down the tree chill dude that's super chill yeah and so dad's like watch me
00:11:22
Oh, the next day it comes in with a backhoe, but the tree's been cut down and there's a big hole right around the tree.
00:11:30
Oh, no. This is really sus. Dad's like, what the hell's going on? So anyway, pulls up the tree, talks to the guy next door.
00:11:38
Doesn't know anything apparently, as you do. And then so we build the house over the top where this tree was.
00:11:46
Straight away, which ends up being my bedroom, mind you. No, no. There ends up being horrific hauntings.
00:11:52
So... No. Yes So this is like Sit down Sit down What happened What Everything So it starts off with my brother So he first in the room
00:12:06
So there's 10 years between my brother and I. So my brother Adam wakes up. There's these horrible, horrific noises in the room.
00:12:14
Basically, this ghost likes musical instruments. Don't know if you'll believe in ghosts, but anyway.
00:12:18
Sure, I do now. It doesn't matter. My brother starts to learn the guitar. So you learn the recorder at primary school, basically.
00:12:25
Then you go up to the guitar. So by grade six, he's like, master this guitar. Every night, family wakes up to the guitar strumming.
00:12:34
Oh, no, no, no. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So 10 years on, I'm just born, basically,
00:12:43
and my dad liked the ukulele. So he would come in. You guys just not have string instruments in your fucking house anymore.
00:12:51
So basically what keeps happening is these horrible things keep happening in the in our family things like you'd be in the shower and shampoo bottles would
00:12:59
come down on you like one after the other yeah yeah yeah yeah like creepy as fuck like petrifying
00:13:06
shit right anyway so eventually this just these things keep happening and I'm about four or five
00:13:14
and I say to my mom I feel like there's something wrong at the neighbors there's something really
00:13:19
strange but she said it and she was in a nightgown and her hair was wet and her eyes were white
00:13:26
i don't know what's wrong so basically the next day we're all sitting down for dinner and i actually sent you in this email
00:13:41
as well about it. We read it, we loved it. Yeah, totally. Loved it. So basically
00:13:46
the next day we're all sitting down for dinner. Police come raiding through our house.
00:13:53
They come through our house, they're basically like, if you have somewhere safe to put the kids, put the kids. So my brothers
00:13:59
are older, we all went in the bathroom stayed there. What the fuck? Dad gets out his knife,
00:14:05
literally. Yeah! That's not a knife, this is a knife. Yeah, it's like, you call that a knife?
00:14:12
Yeah. And basically the police raid goes through our house to the next door neighbours.
00:14:17
They go through the back paddocks. We call them paddocks. And then through the front of the house.
00:14:21
Yeah, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, yep, yep. Got it. And basically a body is found in their backyard.
00:14:28
What? This is the big bearded guy's backyard. Yeah, yeah, yeah, big, yeah, yeah, the freaky guy.
00:14:32
Okay. Yeah. And there's other bones that are found on the premises as well. They believe they were buried.
00:14:40
There was tree roots through it. Oh, my God. I know, right? It's like, ooh. Then, oh, my God.
00:14:49
Then, a couple years pass. So the father's been put away. At this point, his daughter is about 19, 20,
00:14:59
and a body has found a Coldstream tip. She's almost decapitated. She's been injected with battery acid.
00:15:07
battery acid in a sleeping bag bound up with a phone cord when we used to actually have phone
00:15:14
cords yeah yeah horrific they can't move the body because this the daughter which they didn't know
00:15:22
at the time her name's karen uh-oh yeah sure she has a thing where she always comes back to the
00:15:29
body and every single time they've missed her so they've moved the body and missed that chance of
00:15:34
her coming back and trying to bury it or get rid of evidence so they're like we've got to leave the
00:15:40
body so they ring talking to the mother and they're like we can't move the body i'm so sorry
00:15:45
so it gets quite emotional the whole town is like this girl like we don't know the body's being
00:15:50
found we don't know anything about it's all top secret they don't haven't they heard of a mannequin
00:15:54
with a fucking picture taped on its face not the same she was anyway so basically karen comes back
00:16:03
with dynamite to blow up the body. Holy shit. And this is really quick. You're not a compulsive liar.
00:16:11
I just want to check. I don't care. It doesn't matter. This is like later on. She does it again
00:16:18
with dynamite. She has a thing with dynamite. Okay. So this girl had been, it was a drug deal
00:16:23
gone wrong. Karen was a drug dealer and she had a house in the middle. Wait, this is the daughter
00:16:29
So Ian was a really bad guy that hid the body underneath where our house was and then had a body in the backyard.
00:16:38
And then Karen's the daughter who's in a almost, she's about 19, 20 by now. So basically drug deal's gone wrong.
00:16:45
She was living in Lillydale. She moved back in with her dad after this girl was killed.
00:16:50
Now she gets a dynamite, comes back to blow up this body. It's not a solution. Yeah. So when she comes back, basically the cops jump on her. So she's done for. She's arrested. Her boyfriend was waiting in the car. Now when she does her statement, so basically she rats out her boyfriend, she got less time because she was making sandwiches in the kitchen while they were torturing this girl for 48 hours.
00:17:18
it's repulsive like that is just yeah so she got less time because of that so disgusting yeah
00:17:26
so yeah i know right and this is happening next door while you're growing up well no so this is
00:17:34
so the daughter she was mostly living at lilydale so she's doing all these drug deals and stuff like
00:17:38
that whereas ian had moved out so just his wife was still there okay okay okay so basically
00:17:44
So, apparently Karen then gets out of jail a few years later. Her boyfriend's still in jail.
00:17:49
She gets dynamite to blow out her boyfriend out of jail. What? Karen Karen there other things in the world Please stop Jesus Christ Her mom like would you do the dishes She like yeah I got the perfect solution
00:18:05
Dana mate. It's just what she does. So she ends up going back into jail, obviously.
00:18:10
He does more time. Fast forward about, I think it was about three or four years ago.
00:18:16
She ends up moving back in next door to my mom. But it's okay. She's a born again Christian.
00:18:22
It's all right, guys. Amen. I'm all forgiven. So good. Yeah. Jesus forgives her.
00:18:28
So, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, all that shit. The decks are cleared. The thing that, like, really fucked me.
00:18:35
Jesus does love dynamite, though. Loves it. So, in the end, yeah, my mom still lives next to all of them.
00:18:42
Oh, my God. Do you guys have them over for Christmas every year? Yeah, like, what's Fourth of July like?
00:18:48
Just really tense? They don't have that here. Oh. Sorry, sorry. Um, yeah, that's the story of the jewels.
00:19:04
That was our last story. Oh my god. Yeah, that was amazing. Rebecca. You guys, Rebecca, everybody.
00:19:13
Good job. That was amazing. Wow. Top that. I mean. Oh no, don't fall. spot her she's dizzy so are we come on honey get out of here
00:19:31
hey hey hi hi guys what's her name i'm kristin kristin this is kristin come over here stand on the magic rug
00:19:42
okay yeah here we go where are you from here orlando orlando nice hometown yeah okay so uh
00:19:51
This one is about my mom's best friend when she was like 20, 21. She went over to her best friend Catherine's house because they were planning her wedding because she was engaged, Catherine.
00:20:02
She was engaged to this guy named Keith. And when they went over there, Catherine was missing because she had, I guess, gone get hair dye or something.
00:20:13
But she never came back. she's cops come and they have found her body in the trunk of the car she's been beaten and stabbed
00:20:24
and it turns out I'm going to make it pretty short it turns out that her her fiance Catherine's
00:20:34
fiance Keith's best friend Danny actually really hated Catherine and was in love with Keith
00:20:41
oh shit. Oh, fuck. This is a new one. Yeah. Fuck. Yeah, and it gets even better. Well, not better. Worse. Worse. Worse.
00:20:54
You guys get it. Definitely worse. Definitely worse. Yeah, definitely worse. Well, it turns out that he used to
00:21:01
like make, Danny used to make fun of Catherine all the time because apparently we find out what happens. Yeah. But he also used to call her the lazy
00:21:09
pig like he would call her a lazy pig all the time that's not a fun they found her car
00:21:14
behind a restaurant called the lazy pig no is that here in orlando or not any longer but yes
00:21:22
it was what kind of restaurant was it i'm gonna go with barbecue wow makes sense that's good deduction something yeah but yeah he did that on purpose like to send
00:21:35
No, it was a total message sent. They actually did not find out it was him until a really long time after.
00:21:46
With Jeff Ashton. He was part of the Casey Anthony. Oh, yeah, yeah. He started a whole cold case thing in Orlando.
00:21:54
And she was actually the very first cold case that they solved. Wow. So it wasn't until a long time after.
00:22:01
Like how many years? We got our guy. How many years was it? Um, I want to say probably a good 15.
00:22:07
Oh, wow. Yeah, I was like, because this happened in the early 70s, and they didn't find out until,
00:22:12
like, more towards the late 80s. Wow. Can you imagine this whole time, your friend's like, Keith's like fucking crying, and his
00:22:19
friend's helping him, and then it turned out the BMI was, oh my god. Oh, yeah, that's right.
00:22:22
Because he was, like you said, he was consoling and everything, and. What a creep.
00:22:27
Yeah. That's crazy. And it was like, definitely like a passion murder, like. And what was her name?
00:22:34
Catherine. Catherine. Her name was Catherine. Oh, honey. Which is what really matters.
00:22:37
Yeah, exactly. Wow, that was horrifying. Yeah, the lazy pig part is what creeps me out.
00:22:42
Lazy pig is the fucking worst. Yeah. Oh, man, you would have loved that jewelry box.
00:22:47
I feel bad now. Oh, shit. Because I was like, what if we give it to someone, and they're like, I don't want this shit.
00:22:52
And it was like, she would love it. Yeah, this is pretty cool. I'm good with this.
00:22:55
Okay, yay. Kristen, everybody. That was great. Thank you. So good. Should we give her Vince's sunglasses as a gift?
00:23:08
Georgia, I think it's you, right? I'm on a fucking roll, so don't ruin this for me, guys.
00:23:13
Who has a hometown? Nobody? I think that the girl sitting next to our friends that helped us.
00:23:20
Yeah, yeah, and the toxic masculinity. Where'd Vince go? Vince is right there. Walk over to him.
00:23:24
Oh, there's Vince, everybody. Vince got us a lovely charcuterie and cheese spread backstage.
00:23:35
Vince is our tour manager. He's Georgia's husband. That's right. He does it all.
00:23:39
He does it. Which means we don't have to pay him. No, we pay him sometimes. That's hard labor.
00:23:45
He's doing his hard labor for free. His hard stark labor. What? His hard stark labor.
00:23:51
Oh, right. That's so good. Hi. What's your name? Ethel. Ethel? Ethel. Aoife. Hi. Oh, that's cute. Aoife. Here, center up, center up, center up. Look at her shoes. Let's do a nice stage picture.
00:24:08
Those are great. Will you tell me your name? Sorry. Aoife. Aoife? Yeah. Awesome. Aoife, everybody.
00:24:16
Where are you from? I'm from Keri. You're from Keri? Yeah. Keri. She's from Keri.
00:24:21
You guys know it. Did she say it right? I'm sorry, it's Keri. Ah, Jesus. Yeah. Okay, what's your hometown?
00:24:31
So my mom is from Westmeath, and she's from this tiny village. Like, there's not even as many people as there is here.
00:24:38
Oh, fun. It's called Cool. Cool. Too easy. Sorry, sorry. So a family from Dublin moved out there years ago, and the father worked in England.
00:24:53
So he'd be back and forth, and then they just stopped seeing him. Oh. And then they moved away and they hadn't really got involved with the community, so it was fine.
00:25:03
Nobody cared. But then the daughter went to the Garda. Multiple Garda. Garda. Message received.
00:25:16
And told them that they had killed him a few years back and buried him in their garden.
00:25:25
Garda. garden got it garden garden and then they dug him up and burnt him somewhere else
00:25:35
the family did yeah what dicks okay and then she decided to go to the garden because
00:25:42
she found out her mother was having an affair with her boyfriend her own boyfriend
00:25:48
Okay, wait. Who's related? First of all, let's start with the top. No. Wait, so when they killed the father, was it the mother's idea?
00:26:01
Yes. The mother and the boyfriend. They tricked the kids. They tricked the daughter into the plan.
00:26:11
No! No! It's her cousin. What's two is it? Sorry. She looks nice. She doesn't look mad.
00:26:23
You better come up here right now. I look so sad. She looks nice. I was like dug down the road from my mom's house.
00:26:34
Maybe you're related. No way. Vince. Go around here. Hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry.
00:26:44
We got to hear this. What the hell's going on? Move it. This is unprecedented. She's her cousin.
00:26:55
She said, she yelled, it's my cousin. And then I was like, oh shit. And then I saw her face and she doesn't look angry.
00:27:01
So we're good. It's going to be okay. She was. This is the great fear that we always have.
00:27:05
You were really fucked up over this PTSD. Okay. It's doing great. It's doing great.
00:27:10
It's doing great. Hi! What's your name? What's your name? Hi! What's your name? That's Effa, right?
00:27:25
What is it? Ifa. Hi, guys, meet Ifa. Emma? Nice to meet you. Okay, they're sharing a...
00:27:33
Do it in the microphones. Okay, what's their family? Fair enough. Okay. Private talking.
00:27:41
Okay, so your cousin. Who's your cousin? Don't talk privately on stage, please. We were going to email in about our auntie.
00:27:50
But we decided not to. Do you want to say that? But then Issa came on stage and told a lot about her auntie.
00:27:59
Okay, it's not an auntie that we talk to. Okay. Good. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. You know the kind.
00:28:11
Oh, we got those. You know the kind. We know what she's done. Oh, my God. And we know she has a book.
00:28:17
A book? She wrote a book about it. You don't get to do that if you're the murderer.
00:28:22
Wait, so will you run it down for us just really quick? No, we see. We don't. You don't talk about it?
00:28:28
No, no. Do you see? Everyone in coolant. The parents. You asked the parents. They're like, we don't talk about that.
00:28:34
Oh, they won't tell you anything? There was a bonfire. Yeah. And the bones were left.
00:28:38
It was all so a under patio. And then they decided that wasn't good enough. So they
00:28:45
brought it up and went to the pigs. Oh shit. But family don't associate with that.
00:28:57
Eva just goes, I didn't get to the pigs part. My mom didn't know the pigs part. Oh shit.
00:29:05
There was bits left in the pig. That's how they found out. That's how they proved that.
00:29:10
Yeah, but it was the mother who's the daughter's husband. So the daughter went to the Gardaí.
00:29:22
To the Gardaí. Multiple. And she said, hey, there's something shitty on her. Oh, God.
00:29:28
Good for her. A woman scorned, man. Oh, yeah. Like, fucking watch it. So she brought out a book.
00:29:33
And now it's that, hey, fuck you. oh my god tell you all about it I don't know it was like a diary
00:29:39
I can't remember our family won't tell us and so she's in jail now she's gone she's in jail now
00:29:48
she's out and she's like I'm right here there's um murder the wife was done for murder yeah the daughter husband was done for manslaughter uh will find out the name of the book Okay Because I have it Okay great Yeah And I will come up
00:30:06
I'm not going to read it. I'm going to shout it at you. I love it. That's great.
00:30:10
You guys, this is an amazing seven-part series right now that we have. Give us a round of applause.
00:30:15
Let's do it for all of these guys. Thank you so much. Great job. Sorry. Thank you.
00:30:21
Thank you. Moral support. Moral. Good job. Thank you. Jesus Christ. You did great.
00:30:31
Thank you. Oh, my God. We'll call you guys later. That could have been a fucking clusterfuck.
00:30:40
Oh, my God. And it wasn't, and I'm so grateful for that. I'm sweating a little extra.
00:30:46
I love that they came up and they had less information than Aoife did. Fuck yes.
00:30:52
That's what it's all about. It would have been cool if we'd get like 30 people on this stage just milling around of like, well, I've heard this story.
00:30:59
I would like to say this and that. You forgot the part of the pig, the chickens. You forgot the chickens.
00:31:05
Your husband is not who you think he is. Your body is not what you thought it was.
00:31:10
Your identity is formed by a secret history. I'm Dani Shapiro, and these are just a few of the stunning stories I'll be exploring on the 14th season of Family Secrets.
00:31:21
And just then, we felt the plane turn in the air. So much so that the bags that were under people's seats just kind of flew into the aisle.
00:31:30
Each week, we dive headfirst into the complex power of secrecy. How it shapes our identities and relationships.
00:31:37
And how it ultimately can reveal to us our truest selves. My daughter, she's pretending she doesn't know, but is trying to cook and feed me and keep me alive because I wasn't eating anything.
00:31:47
and me pretending like everything was fine. He kind of shoved me out of the way and said, move.
00:31:53
And he went out the front door and he jumped in a car and drove off. And that was the last time I saw him.
00:31:58
Listen to season 14 of Family Secrets on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:32:06
Hi, I'm Chris Fairbanks. And I'm Karen Kilgariff. We host Do You Need a Ride? the mobile comedy podcast that answers the question,
00:32:13
what does it sound like when we drive our comedian friends around the wild streets of Los Angeles?
00:32:17
Yes, every week we pick up a hilarious guest, maybe run some errands, share some laughs, and our dreams.
00:32:23
Like when Martha Kelly shared her career pivot. I want to become a influencer of divorced moms whose kids have gone off to college who have decided they're going to start living life for themselves.
00:32:35
Or the time Baron Vaughn got distracted by the majestic scenery. Then there's a freaking deer right there on the side of the road.
00:32:42
Holy shit. Eating freaking road grass. I wish you said glass. is going on. Every week, I'm breaking down the biggest issues happening in our communities and
00:33:21
around the world. I'm talking to people like Julie Kay Brown, who broke the explosive story
00:33:25
on Jeffrey Epstein in 2018. The Justice Department, through we counted four presidential administrations,
00:33:32
failed these victims. Listen to Bleep with Anna Navarro on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:33:40
did you just pick seven people this way yeah no no wait oh no her i'm sorry i'm never doing this again sorry i each this is why i don't do this i'm sorry i'm gonna hug her
00:33:58
after the show hi hi what's your name hi crystal here come over here crystal You have to take center stage.
00:34:12
Come out here with your fabulous pants. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. Crystal, where are you from? I'm from Detroit.
00:34:20
Yeah. Hometown. What's up? Show us on the thing where the... Just point. Wrong hand. Wrong hand.
00:34:28
Wrong hand. Yep, that's where Vince always points. Right down there? Right down there. Okay.
00:34:34
Everyone knows. You are here. You are here. okay okay okay what's your hometown so this is a family murder oh wow
00:34:43
she goes i know i know okay so it's two murders over two years well several murders whatever the
00:34:54
case seven two or seven four i thought you said seven so it starts with one year my cousin on his
00:35:02
birthday he's like an amazing artist whatever he's celebrating it's amazing and then my cousin
00:35:08
who's a police officer gets a call like oh there's a body in the river and she goes
00:35:14
investigates they pull the body out it's my cousin oh wait so the so the police officer
00:35:22
is my cousin and then had to pull their own cousin is our soul our cousin sorry in your
00:35:28
police officer cousin is a woman yes that's awesome okay yes that's just that's exciting
00:35:33
that's exciting yes that is but also this is horrible okay sorry yes so they pull him out
00:35:40
they don't know what fucking happened he's dead it's awful his roommate was with him he's like
00:35:46
they're like what happened he's like we were drinking and then he's like i'm gonna hang out
00:35:50
by myself So he leaves and then he dead So we like I don know It seems sketchy Whatever the case my uncle his dad is like you know what It hard I don want to fuck with it Just let move on The next year my cousin
00:36:10
his brother of the dead person, he's going to college. He's getting his master's degree.
00:36:15
He's in Atlanta. He comes back. He's like, this is weird. Whatever the case, he does whatever he
00:36:22
needs to do he gets a ccw for some random reason what's that uh concealed weapons license oh okay
00:36:29
so now when you say that he says this is weird like he his life was weird for him no he wanted
00:36:35
my uncle to investigate more what happened with his brother okay but my uncle was like i'm sad
00:36:41
my son yeah he just wants to ignore it i just want to move on it's over i don't want to investigate
00:36:46
get anymore okay so my cousin's like whatever so years later i met this part not years later a year
00:36:54
later i'm at a party randomly for someone i don't know that's neither here nor there
00:36:59
was it fun it was fun it was a surprise party for somebody i didn't know so awkward you're like surprise i'm here right i don't know it was kind of my friend's like oh
00:37:11
we're having a party but only four people are here can you come no it was free drinks and
00:37:16
food. Oh, yes. I came. Okay. So anyway, so I came, it was fun. We had drinks and I'm leaving and my
00:37:24
aunt calls and she's like, Hey, what are you doing? And I'm like, I'm driving to a date. She's like,
00:37:29
well, can you pull over? And I'm like, um, what do you mean? She's like, no, seriously, pull over.
00:37:35
So I pull over. Turns out my other cousin, the brother of the person who died the year before
00:37:40
that morning it's a Sunday it's three days after Thanksgiving he goes to the neighbor's house he's
00:37:48
like knocks on the door the neighbor wife answers she's like what's going on he's like hey turn that
00:37:53
music down she's like we're not playing any music he's like yes you are so she's like no I'm not
00:38:00
she goes to get her husband her husband comes back my cousin shoots the husband down on the
00:38:08
porch oh my so then he goes back into their house and he shoots my uncle the uncle who didn't want
00:38:16
to investigate the uncle who didn't want to investigate his father his father his father
00:38:20
kills him yeah so the wife obviously calls the police my cousin goes into the basement they're
00:38:26
in a standoff with the police for several hours and then my cousin kills himself wow
00:38:32
It was fucking awful. So my aunt's telling me this on the phone while I'm on the way to a date with this dude.
00:38:41
Date canceled. No, the date wasn't canceled. Damn. Karen's out of here. I really needed a drink after that.
00:39:00
Okay. That's fair. I'm not married. I'm divorced. Okay, okay, okay. Oh, my God. Okay.
00:39:07
It was the summer of Stevens. Not that Steven. I dated an old Steven, a young Steven,
00:39:15
and then the third Steven that I was going on a date with, I found out that night, was fucking married.
00:39:21
Holy shit. That's a bad night. Jesus. I know. Was it Friday the 13th? Oh, my God.
00:39:26
It should have been. I know. Fuck. It was Thanksgiving. Is there an investigation into the first cousin,
00:39:31
or is it just we never really figured out what happened he just I'm so sorry it was really sad
00:39:37
but yeah I broke up with that Stephen so to make matters worse so that part was good
00:39:46
oh Crystal I mean that was very healthy it was and we commend you for that yeah let's silver lining this shit
00:39:54
yeah Crystal everyone give Crystal I mean that's amazing that's amazing oh my god thank you i mean right i'll steal that yeah you don't get to keep that
00:40:07
that's not your prize for having a good hometown murder crystal i want to apologize for the fact
00:40:14
that i clearly have a pointing issue and just this is how i point at one person and i apologize
00:40:19
to the wonderful ladies i point i clearly pointed at too no that was a great pick i think we know
00:40:26
sorry i do think we know because there's someone that sent a tweet a tweet a twitter and um it's
00:40:33
someone uh shit i memorized the name and then i got all caught up in my rock and roll lifestyle
00:40:38
upstairs it's the person who sent the tweet whose dad texted them about ed gein and there there's a
00:40:46
series of texts and they tweeted and said we've got your we've got your hometown tonight if you
00:40:50
want to hear it i didn't know you were i was like don't tell me surprise me yeah i kept a secret so
00:40:54
So if you are here and you know what I'm talking about, will you come down here?
00:40:57
Usually there's a screen by now. And that's an honor system, so don't try to lie your way through it once you get up here.
00:41:04
I think that that's... I think your name is... Was it Tracy? Yell if... Is it Sarah?
00:41:11
I think her car broke down. Are you walking or are you just sitting in a chair yelling at me?
00:41:15
I don't think she's here. Oh, man. All right, pick another one. Well, no, if she knows her name is Sarah...
00:41:21
I bet she's looking at the Twitter right now. am I right? I don't know what'd they say?
00:41:31
I don't know she's in the bathroom is that true? what a nightmare okay don't say
00:41:40
wait before she gets back before she gets back we have to do a trick on her before she gets back
00:41:48
I can't think of what it is you go sit in her seat okay where is it oh my god don let him touch you karen jesus help me is this her seat where is it are you fucking kids real oh my god i thought you guys were making a
00:42:14
joke slide in that i'm not going that way i'm gonna have to put my butt in front of everybody's
00:42:18
face. Yeah, I'll go this way. I'll go this way. Karen, I'm up here alone. Oh, sorry.
00:42:24
I forgot. I'm going to go too. Oh my gosh. George, you a type 5. Oh, is that you?
00:42:30
Shit, I was going to do a trick on you. Come with me. Oh my god. Oh wait, is there
00:42:36
a wait? Sasha. Oh my god. Can I get a microphone? Oh, our seat. Oh, we're still doing the trick.
00:42:44
George, you left. No, I'm right here. Can I get a microphone? Where did everyone go?
00:42:50
Georgia, you can never leave the stage. I feel like I'm having a nightmare. Is that her?
00:42:56
I'm pretty sure I didn't. Sarah, get over here right now or you are in serious trouble.
00:43:01
Oh, she's getting her phone. She's getting her phone. You don't need her phone. Right?
00:43:06
Okay, grab my hand. Grab my hand. Yes. Are you going to walk us to the stage? How do we get up there fast?
00:43:14
Well, I can tell you that this was horrible. I don't care if you had to pee, Sarah.
00:43:19
If you're at a professional show, you stay in your seat the entire time. It doesn't matter.
00:43:25
What are the fucking chances that the one person we called up... Yes. The one fucking person is peeing.
00:43:31
The chances were one in 2,400. Thank you. Yeah, that makes... I don't know math.
00:43:39
It's like one sip of beer less, and she would have not had to go through all of this, and
00:43:45
neither would I have. here i have it karen karen karen i have it i have it okay okay
00:43:50
come on come on look at there she is oh my god oh my goodness no i'm she's in the bathroom come here sorry i really had to come
00:44:02
okay sorry are you are you you seem so chill about all of this no i'm very scared are you
00:44:08
scared let's talk about it you should be i already peed you're shaking right it's
00:44:12
It's freaky as hell. Yeah, I kind of like that I can't see anybody. I know, isn't that good?
00:44:16
It's good. It's good. Wait, where are you from? From Milwaukee, from Wauwatosa. Milwaukee.
00:44:22
Born and raised. Local. Yes. What street do you live on? I'm not going to say. Good, good, good call.
00:44:31
Because I don't want to get murdered. That's right. That was a test. Yes. So I'm going to tell this story through my own dad's words.
00:44:39
Beautiful. Yeah, I can't say it any better. Okay. So, as my father. Wait, what is he, is he going to, are we going to know what he does for a living?
00:44:47
He's a psychologist. So cool. What's his first name? Steve. Steve, okay. Steve is a psychologist.
00:44:54
Great. And as a college student, before he married my mother. What's her name? Sandy.
00:45:00
Steven Sandy. Steven Sandy. Oh, Steven Sandy got married in Milwaukee. Yes. Yeah.
00:45:07
Right out of college or? Yeah, right out of college. Right out of college. In Madison.
00:45:12
No. Yep. Yep. They did. So my dad says, I was a volunteer at Mendota Mental Health, working with kids.
00:45:23
You guys go there? All the time. All the time. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Yeah. Love it.
00:45:29
Twice a week. The nurses brought in Halloween costumes, and we took the kids trick-or-treating to the other units.
00:45:38
What? Hold on. Yeah. Yeah. Get him on the phone right now. What? I said I could call him.
00:45:44
Are you serious? Yeah. Get him on the phone. I could. Oh, my God. Do you want me to keep reading it so you know the background?
00:45:51
Yeah, you want to tell it and then we'll call him after? Okay, because that's...
00:45:54
Okay, we'll ask him about it. He's good at writing. That's insane. We'll have questions.
00:45:57
He said it was a weird year because someone poisoned Tylenol in Chicago. Ooh. It was 1982.
00:46:07
Yes. What? Yes. Yes. So people were scared and kids were not trick-or-treating. Oh, so take him to the mental hospital.
00:46:15
It was the kids from the mental hospital. Wait, what? Yeah. Okay, okay. Yeah. Okay.
00:46:21
Yeah. So nurses on the other units had candy and patients would give our kids treats.
00:46:27
On some units, it was too dangerous and they would slip the candy through a security slot in the door.
00:46:32
Oh my God, those children are like, I'm worse now. Those kids. But we went on the gerontology psych unit.
00:46:41
Old people. I feel like they get scared straight, kind of. We're like, hi, kids.
00:46:46
That was safe. And old people gave the kids Reese's Cups. We were waiting for all the old people who wanted to come give away some candy.
00:46:54
And a nurse asked, Eddie, do you want to give the kids some candy? And I turned around, and there he was.
00:47:02
What? He did not want to hand out any candy. We said a quick hi to each other, and he asked if we would be gone soon.
00:47:13
I said, yeah, and that was it. So kids all over the country couldn't trick-or-treat because it wasn't safe.
00:47:22
But my kids trick-or-treated to a cannibalistic necrophile, and we're safe as can be.
00:47:26
Oh my God! That was all in that, all those texts? Oh yeah. Yeah. Can we get him on the phone real quick?
00:47:38
Yeah. Oh, no. Because that was a gorgeously written series of texts. Okay. Dad sell, it says.
00:47:50
Yeah, he better answer. It's on you. Should I put him on speakerphone? Yes, you should.
00:48:00
Oh no. Stephen. Stephen. He's in the bathroom. Runs the family. Oh my goodness, you're falling.
00:48:28
Let's all talk to him. Are you going to leave him a message? Yeah, we are. At the tone, please record your message.
00:48:35
When you finish recording, you may hang up or press one for more options. And we'll scream.
00:48:40
Steve, this is everybody at the Riverside Theater right now. You said I could call you.
00:48:52
We've got your daughter. We've got your daughter. And we're having a great old time.
