00:00:58
party party party it's Jody Sweden hello
00:01:03
you probably know Jody as Stephanie
00:01:06
Tanner like first and foremost because
00:01:09
iconic icon but Jody thank you so much
00:01:13
for coming on this is like huge for us
00:01:15
we're so excited oh my gosh this is huge
00:01:18
for me I'm a big fan of the show and
00:01:20
it's like I when I first jumped on the
00:01:22
zoom I was like oh my gosh like I know
00:01:24
these voices so yeah I'm also excited to
00:01:27
be here um I love morbid I love all
00:01:29
things spooky and weird and creepy and
00:01:32
uh and you guys are hilarious so yeah oh
00:01:34
thank you yes we feel the same way too
00:01:37
as soon as you came on the zoom I was
00:01:38
like oh my God old friend
00:01:40
yeah
00:01:42
yep yep it's true living room yeah you
00:01:46
didn't even know it but I was in your
00:01:47
living room that's wild that's insane I
00:01:49
guess not even when the TV was on just
00:01:50
yeah they're standing you've got no idea
00:01:52
yep we're all just hanging out together
00:01:54
just Vibes yeah yeah you didn't I mean
00:01:57
you guys were asleep it was a little
00:01:58
weird but you know
00:02:00
we've been through a lot together yes
00:02:03
yeah yeah in the last five minutes I
00:02:05
mean we've been through solar flares and
00:02:07
planets in retrograde lifetimes we've
00:02:10
lived together lifetimes of things yeah
00:02:12
planetary events we've lived together
00:02:15
but the main reason that we're all here
00:02:17
is the spooky of it all hell yeah so we
00:02:21
have a couple spooky questions for you
00:02:23
before we get into the actual like
00:02:25
Cryptid of it all that Elena's gonna
00:02:27
present but is it cool if we ask you a
00:02:30
couple questions first absolutely go for
00:02:33
it all right cool so we know that you're
00:02:34
into True Crime what would you say is
00:02:37
the one case that interested you the
00:02:39
most over the years
00:02:41
oh man I know it's always a hard one
00:02:43
there's so many I mean God I I was like
00:02:47
the weird kid at the library when I was
00:02:49
like eight to like checking out books on
00:02:52
like the Amityville Horror and like all
00:02:56
kinds of weird stuff right all the ghost
00:02:57
stories and like weird stuff at the
00:02:59
library like oh that was you any other
00:03:02
aisle yeah yeah yeah that was me it was
00:03:05
yeah I was hoarding all the weird creepy
00:03:07
books um
00:03:08
gosh one that's fascinating you know and
00:03:11
it depends because like there's like I
00:03:14
I'm
00:03:15
fascinated with like serial killers
00:03:18
simply because I find
00:03:21
like abnormal psych or or the the sort
00:03:24
of
00:03:25
various shades of of psychology really
00:03:29
interesting yeah because it's just
00:03:31
humans are more terrifying than any
00:03:33
monsters we can really make up so much
00:03:36
so
00:03:37
um for me I think also because I'm an LA
00:03:40
girl The Night Stalker has always been a
00:03:43
fascinating case to me because it also
00:03:46
involves the Cecil Hotel oh yeah in
00:03:48
downtown L.A oh yeah which I'm also
00:03:50
fascinated by and my friend and I my
00:03:52
friend lives around the corner there so
00:03:53
we've gone over there many times trying
00:03:55
to like figure out how we can be creepy
00:03:57
and get in
00:03:58
um but the Night Stalker case in
00:04:00
particular because I I I think it was
00:04:05
what year was that it was like oh that
00:04:07
was early yeah I think it was yeah
00:04:10
because I I I was I I mean I was little
00:04:13
but I vaguely remember it being sort of
00:04:15
in The Ether and like being talked about
00:04:19
um but for me it's just such a weird
00:04:21
case because there's no Rhyme or Reason
00:04:24
yes the chaos of it all usually it's
00:04:28
like it's one of the cases that you go
00:04:30
oh wow uh man like some people just it's
00:04:33
just it doesn't there's no victim
00:04:35
profile it was there was no map there
00:04:38
was no plan there was no
00:04:40
um type like that was just that was
00:04:43
fascinating to me that it was just
00:04:45
across the board chaos yeah it was kids
00:04:48
it was elderly everything in between
00:04:50
yeah and I also that one is interesting
00:04:53
too because you read so much about like
00:04:54
his childhood and and brain trauma and
00:04:57
all not as an excuse obviously but it's
00:05:00
an interesting it's just sort of an
00:05:01
interesting thing because you can kind
00:05:02
of see this whole thing like pieced
00:05:05
together yes and as an LA girl I'm
00:05:07
always fascinated by those also
00:05:09
um the um I mean the Manson Murders yeah
00:05:12
obviously
00:05:14
um also my friend lives on that property
00:05:16
oh wow yeah so like I it's just uh um I
00:05:21
mean obviously the house has since been
00:05:22
torn down and he's built a place and
00:05:25
stuff but
00:05:26
um but yeah it's I mean it's the
00:05:28
property nonetheless yeah and that's
00:05:31
kind of like a similar thing too like no
00:05:32
rhyme no reason yes pure chaos yeah pure
00:05:36
K and yeah and that one had like a weird
00:05:38
Beach Boys connection and so yeah like
00:05:41
there's so yeah there's I have several
00:05:44
weird like connections to that case in
00:05:46
particular so um yeah it's pretty pretty
00:05:49
[ __ ] up those are two can I say that
00:05:51
yeah I can say that yeah oh yeah all the
00:05:53
time got it I was like wait yeah I can
00:05:55
okay just checking oh yeah
00:05:59
okay no I was those two are like it
00:06:02
really is the chaos of it all that
00:06:04
stresses me out especially about the
00:06:06
Night Stalker case yeah when you can go
00:06:08
down to like kids and go all the way up
00:06:11
to like 90 year olds and everything
00:06:14
it was and no real Rhyme or Reason as to
00:06:18
um meth the way it was done method like
00:06:21
yeah and that for me is it again from
00:06:24
like the psychology aspect of is really
00:06:26
interesting because it's the chaos of
00:06:28
that mind that comes out in that way is
00:06:30
is I think that's the thing is I'm like
00:06:33
I so desperately want to understand not
00:06:35
understand but like what it's so
00:06:38
unrelatable that type exactly of horror
00:06:41
to me and I think that's like a lot of
00:06:43
True Crime is like it's so beyond that
00:06:46
I'm like what in the world could
00:06:48
possibly make someone go there and
00:06:50
anyway it's just fascinating to me and
00:06:52
yeah and getting to go to like the hotel
00:06:53
Cecil yes my friend and I like figured
00:06:55
out how to get into the alley behind the
00:06:57
thing there were like you can go to the
00:06:59
place where like he's yeah yeah so did
00:07:01
anything happen while you were at the
00:07:02
Cecil like any kind of paranormal
00:07:04
happening no because I mean we've got
00:07:05
we've also gone during the day but I I
00:07:08
mean I I there's so many great historic
00:07:11
creepy places in downtown LA but no
00:07:13
nothing ever happened while we were
00:07:14
there but
00:07:16
um they've now since reopened it again
00:07:18
oh yeah I saw that recently and turned
00:07:21
it into uh they originally were gonna
00:07:23
take it and turn it into like luxury
00:07:25
condos yeah imagine that that's a choice
00:07:28
which well they do that to everything in
00:07:30
downtown L.A and obviously the housing
00:07:33
market sucks and no one has money to buy
00:07:36
two million dollar condos downtown
00:07:38
anymore so yeah so they I think they
00:07:41
have now reverted it back to um like low
00:07:43
income housing okay which was kind of
00:07:45
what it was previously yeah yeah
00:07:49
um but there was also that weird
00:07:50
documentary in that that was at the
00:07:52
hotel Cecil oh yeah I want to say he was
00:07:54
dutchered something I'm trying to
00:07:57
remember what that there was that guy
00:07:58
there was the girl that wound up in the
00:08:01
water tank yeah Lisa limb that's like a
00:08:04
really sad that's really wild and just
00:08:06
like Bonkers yeah yeah yeah yeah there's
00:08:09
just all kinds of weird stuff but they
00:08:10
have now since turned it back into I
00:08:12
think it's low income housing again
00:08:13
which is much needed downtown
00:08:15
um but it'll be interesting you know
00:08:17
that place is just such a people say
00:08:19
it's like a hotbed of really weird
00:08:21
activity and so I definitely wanted to
00:08:23
figure out how to go in there before
00:08:25
they had turned it into anything I was
00:08:26
like I'm gonna go in here while it's
00:08:27
empty oh yeah I feel like that's when
00:08:30
something would happen oh yeah so have
00:08:32
you ever had any paranormal experience
00:08:34
in general in your life that's been like
00:08:36
holy [ __ ] yes I have so okay you're like
00:08:41
back for this one I'm like so picture
00:08:44
this Sicily 19 now
00:08:47
um so God this was 10 years ago or a
00:08:51
little more
00:08:52
um I worked in drug and alcohol
00:08:54
treatment I was a director of operations
00:08:56
and we had several properties here in La
00:08:59
that we rented
00:09:01
um and one of which was this huge
00:09:04
property up off of um Wonderland uh here
00:09:07
in the Hollywood Hills and it
00:09:10
think used to it was owned or Jared Leto
00:09:13
bought it after we had rented it out or
00:09:16
something iconic it's eight it takes up
00:09:18
three addresses it's a gigantic property
00:09:20
and it was originally built as a
00:09:22
military uh base they it has a Sound
00:09:24
Stage attached to it they would shoot
00:09:27
um World War II propaganda films here no
00:09:29
way and it's also rumored that they held
00:09:33
people there
00:09:35
um without because it was in the
00:09:36
Hollywood it's way back there like way
00:09:39
before there were houses or anything and
00:09:41
it goes down about three or four stories
00:09:44
into the side of the mountain and it's
00:09:47
got 18 inch thick cement walls it's a
00:09:49
nuclear fallout shelter it took the
00:09:51
whole thing
00:09:53
um so we had had it as a property and we
00:09:55
there was um we had it as a sober living
00:09:58
and we had there was like an art gallery
00:09:59
attached I mean it was gigantic right so
00:10:03
uh at the time I was looking for an
00:10:06
apartment had to be out of my old
00:10:07
apartment with my kids I was going
00:10:09
through divorce whatever it was kind of
00:10:11
crazy and so there was an apartment that
00:10:15
was uh on one of the lower floors of the
00:10:17
addresses had its own separate entrance
00:10:19
it was like 1200 square feet but it was
00:10:21
just kind of a big room with a little
00:10:23
kitchen attached and then this
00:10:24
ridiculous gigantic bathroom that I
00:10:27
called the Scarface bathroom because it
00:10:29
was like black and white tiled and all
00:10:30
mirrored and I'm not kidding you when I
00:10:33
lived there for like the month and a
00:10:34
half with my kids the bathtub was like a
00:10:37
small swimming pool like my kids used to
00:10:39
just like battle through yeah it was
00:10:41
crazy they're like Mom we love this
00:10:42
place right and it was but it was like
00:10:44
weirdly old like it was just it was a
00:10:46
weird spot to be but it was kind of cool
00:10:48
to live there so anyway I was there and
00:10:52
when we had first acquired the property
00:10:55
um our the handyman that used to go over
00:10:56
there all the time he would talk about
00:10:58
how like creepy it was over there and we
00:11:00
would all kind of laugh and be like oh
00:11:01
yeah whatever he's like no no like it's
00:11:02
real there's like a woman's voice that
00:11:04
keeps talking and I'm like anyway I feel
00:11:07
like whatever like and I I mean I didn't
00:11:09
discount it because like you know Amazon
00:11:11
stuff happens but I was like ah it's
00:11:12
probably fine there's so many you know
00:11:13
whatever people coming and going well I
00:11:16
move in and within maybe the first week
00:11:22
or 10 days uh I'm in the bathroom
00:11:24
brushing my teeth and my my younger
00:11:26
daughter is B is standing there and kind
00:11:28
of looking back into the broom and she
00:11:30
just starts going no no no no no no no
00:11:31
no no no no no no no no no
00:11:33
oh and I was like what
00:11:38
what's happening what are you talking to
00:11:40
and she was like it's the lady in the
00:11:42
corner again again I don't want to talk
00:11:44
to her she's scaring me oh no oh I hate
00:11:47
I have Goosebumps already I don't like
00:11:49
that at all and I was like okay
00:11:53
you're like I have to parent through
00:11:55
this like [ __ ] well let's talk to her
00:11:57
and let her know
00:11:59
let's communicate I'm always like I
00:12:02
don't know what I I don't know it's like
00:12:04
let's reason with them I you know so I
00:12:06
was like
00:12:07
um whoever is here right now we know
00:12:10
that you're we're in your space like
00:12:12
it's okay but um you're scaring my
00:12:14
little one right now and so um you know
00:12:17
if you could leave that would be great
00:12:19
like I don't know what do you want to
00:12:21
say you know I feel like that's the
00:12:22
perfect thing to say yeah and then she
00:12:24
said like you know a few minutes later
00:12:26
like she didn't see her anymore but we
00:12:28
definitely would um hear knocks on the
00:12:31
door
00:12:32
um in that hallway and there would be I
00:12:34
mean it would be late at night nobody
00:12:36
was there and nobody was in that section
00:12:38
of the house and yeah like a lot of
00:12:40
creepy things like that happen but the
00:12:42
creepiest part is that well not the
00:12:43
creepiest part I'd say the lady in the
00:12:44
corner was probably the craziest part
00:12:45
she takes the case so I had to store all
00:12:48
of my stuff in the old film vaults that
00:12:52
were on the property that's so cool
00:12:56
[Music]
00:13:04
if you guys know anything about me you
00:13:06
know that I am all about being comfy I
00:13:10
love soft sweatpants I love soft pajays
00:13:13
I just said pajes but I meant PJs I love
00:13:16
anything soft and cozy which is exactly
00:13:18
why I am freaking obsessed with Buffy
00:13:22
sheets Buffy has Earth's softest bedding
00:13:26
like the softness on the planet I got
00:13:29
mine this morning and put them on my bed
00:13:30
I haven't slept on them yet I can I'm
00:13:33
counting down the actual minutes until I
00:13:36
can get into my bed tonight and this is
00:13:38
what we got we got the Brie sheet set by
00:13:40
Buffy and apparently they are the
00:13:42
softest sheets you'll ever try and just
00:13:44
from putting them on my bed I know that
00:13:45
the sheets are woven from eucalyptus
00:13:47
which makes it softer than cotton or
00:13:49
linen and you can sleep cooler because
00:13:52
fabric made from eucalyptus is naturally
00:13:54
cool to the touch it's also researched
00:13:56
back to be more breathable than cotton
00:13:58
or linen and perfect for hot sleepers
00:14:00
I'm not a hot sleeper but Drew is so he
00:14:03
makes our bed sort of like a an oven and
00:14:05
then I'm like wow I'm literally sweating
00:14:07
and I wouldn't be if I had Buffy sheets
00:14:09
so now maybe tonight it'll be different
00:14:11
and I can't wait Buffy is really awarded
00:14:13
and recognized Buffy products are
00:14:15
consistently on best of lists

architectural digest and glamor named

I used to scrub dust wash shampoo
00:14:47
disinfect and vacuum my entire freaking
00:14:50
house but no matter how much cleaning I
00:14:53
did I would still smell the cat's litter
00:14:55
box and it was driving me absolutely
00:14:57
insane and I felt so Yucca but then that
00:15:00
all changed when I made the switch to
00:15:02
pretty litter truly nothing beats pretty
00:15:04
litter's ability to instantly trap odor
00:15:06
it's Ultra absorbent it's lightweight
00:15:08
low dust and one six pound bag works for
00:15:11
me for up to a month without clumping do
00:15:14
you know how big of a deal that is that
00:15:17
means no more wasting litter and also
00:15:19
you don't have to scoop the the pee I've
00:15:22
told you that before I hate that part
00:15:23
you don't have to do that if you have
00:15:24
pretty litter and that really gives me
00:15:26
peace of mind also pretty litters
00:15:28
crystals change color to indicate early
00:15:30
signs of potential illnesses in my cat
00:15:32
like urinary tract infections kidney
00:15:34
issues and more and if you're a cat
00:15:36
owner you know that's a big deal because
00:15:37
they're not walking up to you and
00:15:38
telling you that they don't feel good
00:15:39
and if that wasn't enough pretty litter
00:15:41
ships free right to my door I never ever
00:15:44
run out I don't have huge kitty litter
00:15:46
bags taking up space and even better I
00:15:48
don't have to Lug those huge tubs from a
00:15:50
store to my car and into my house and my
00:15:52
home has truly never smelled better
00:15:54
people have noticed pretty litter has
00:15:56
helped eliminate cat box stink in my
00:15:57
house and it can do the same for you

[Music]
00:16:23
and in order to access the film vaults
00:16:25
you had to go downstairs into like down
00:16:29
into the thing and they it was like
00:16:31
stepping back into like a 1950s like
00:16:35
military it was all that weird green
00:16:38
metal oh you know what I mean that you
00:16:40
see from like 1950s and 60s offices and
00:16:43
stuff and like big sliding doors that
00:16:45
were green metal and all like and and
00:16:48
the lights were the kind that were on
00:16:51
sensors oh it was obviously so big so
00:16:54
you would walk through somewhere and
00:16:55
then if you were still for a while the
00:16:57
lights would turn off oh my God that's a
00:17:00
terrible seven no so I would be down
00:17:02
like carrying stuff down to the vaults
00:17:04
or like getting stuff out or whatever
00:17:05
and putting it back and um yeah there
00:17:08
were definitely quite a few times that
00:17:09
I'd be in there and it was just like
00:17:11
like the light starts
00:17:14
and then you'd be like waving and if
00:17:16
you're not right in front of the sensor
00:17:17
you're like okay feel like waving
00:17:19
running up and down the hallway oh yeah
00:17:21
it was it was definitely
00:17:23
um a creepy a a creepy place to live but
00:17:26
kind of cool and I'm always glad that I
00:17:28
uh couldn't say that I had that
00:17:30
experience yeah that's wild that's
00:17:32
horrifying those are couples
00:17:34
experiences yeah it reminded me of the
00:17:37
story with your little ones yeah I've
00:17:39
told this on the show before but my
00:17:42
little ones when they went into their
00:17:43
first like big girl beds right they
00:17:46
freaked out the first night and we were
00:17:48
like oh it's you know it's a little big
00:17:50
girl bed of course a transition straight
00:17:52
down like a toddler bed right right of
00:17:54
course it's yeah so we come running and
00:17:55
we're like what's the matter and they
00:17:57
were like and they were right next to
00:17:58
the door and there was a little hallway
00:17:59
right outside their door and one of them
00:18:01
said there's people that keep coming in
00:18:04
my room and they're trying to cut my
00:18:06
sheets with scissors and I was like
00:18:07
right right oh God I was like there's
00:18:11
not like what I don't know what to do
00:18:15
here and it's like you're like okay I
00:18:16
can't freak out because I can't freak
00:18:18
them out
00:18:20
and then I was like are they here now
00:18:23
and they were like no they're right
00:18:24
there and they pointed to the dark
00:18:27
hallway right outside their room and I
00:18:29
was like
00:18:30
okay and I was like they're just
00:18:31
standing there and they were like yeah
00:18:32
they're just there and I was like you're
00:18:34
like and this was like an old it was an
00:18:36
old it was from like the 1800s so I was
00:18:38
like cool right right right and I just
00:18:40
stepped into the hallway and I was like
00:18:42
Hey ever and I was like they're around
00:18:45
me right now and they're like yeah and
00:18:46
I'm like awesome okay and then I'm like
00:18:48
okay guys yeah like awesome right yeah
00:18:51
you're just like I don't know what's
00:18:52
happening and I feel sort of ridiculous
00:18:54
but this is fine
00:18:55
like you know I'm gonna say how you guys
00:18:58
like I'm gonna give this a try so I was
00:19:00
like Hey guys like you're freaking them
00:19:01
out like can you just like chill out and
00:19:04
not try to cut their sheets tonight like
00:19:06
we'll talk about it tomorrow maybe and
00:19:09
they were like yeah I was like is
00:19:10
everything good now and they were like
00:19:11
yeah they never complained about it
00:19:13
again just like one time yeah you gotta
00:19:15
yeah that's what I'm saying you gotta
00:19:17
like be like excuse me just take a
00:19:18
little charge I know I know whatever
00:19:20
you're going through how you've been
00:19:22
trapped in this weird in-between space
00:19:24
for hundreds of years I get that
00:19:28
um could you not freak my kids out while
00:19:30
we're trying to sleep that would be so
00:19:31
much appreciated yeah thanks like I
00:19:34
totally get you're going through it if
00:19:36
you need someone to talk to come to me
00:19:38
it's fine really but like I try to cut
00:19:40
my sheets like not scare the [ __ ] out of
00:19:43
the kids because they're never gonna go
00:19:44
to sleep and then I'm gonna be angry
00:19:47
yeah deal with it they're gonna be
00:19:48
traumatized forever so like just come in
00:19:50
my room like I can handle it right right
00:19:52
yeah look if you need to to cut sheets
00:19:55
whatever right here take it here's some
00:19:57
old ones yeah have at it but just leave
00:19:59
the kids alone please do a craft project
00:20:01
you're dead I can't imagine what that's
00:20:03
like so yeah yeah I get it ghost look go
00:20:06
see graphs too for a while you know yeah
00:20:09
you know yeah that's wild they were
00:20:11
trying to recreate the scene from
00:20:12
Beetlejuice where they cut the holes out
00:20:14
of the eyes of the sheets and just
00:20:15
floated in they were trying to get us
00:20:16
out of that was it so that someone would
00:20:18
notice them right but they yeah and they
00:20:20
were like [ __ ] they just went about it
00:20:22
in a weird way you know you know like oh
00:20:24
man guys we're just trying to get our
00:20:25
outfits right yeah should have just gone
00:20:27
to the linen closet it's true we had
00:20:29
some sheets in there and they weren't
00:20:31
Daniel Tiger so they would have been a
00:20:34
little better I think so oh incredible
00:20:37
yeah I don't I don't miss the days of
00:20:39
like everything being like a a cartoon
00:20:41
yeah something yeah it's fun with my I
00:20:45
have seven-year-old Twins and we're
00:20:46
coming out of that a little bit with
00:20:49
them but my three-year-old is like Paw
00:20:51
Patrol and I'm like oh oh yeah yeah
00:20:54
you're still now you're still in it
00:20:55
seven and three yeah I've got 15 and
00:20:57
almost 13. it's a it's it's a wild ride
00:21:00
that's a different Journey right that
00:21:02
must be such a different Church it is it
00:21:05
is quite a different journey I just
00:21:06
remember who I was at 13 and 15 and I'm
00:21:09
like sorry Mom sorry sorry everyone I've
00:21:12
called my mom and apologized so many
00:21:14
times oh yeah although now my kids are
00:21:17
they're actually great it but it really
00:21:19
was I mean pandemic did not do anyone
00:21:21
any favors but my older one like started
00:21:24
Middle School right when it she was like
00:21:26
started sixth grade and then it hit and
00:21:28
then it was all seventh and then part of
00:21:30
eighth like yeah it was not a great
00:21:32
experience it was so hard horrific
00:21:34
anyway
00:21:35
I'll be glad when we're done truly it is
00:21:38
not looking forward to that at all talk
00:21:40
about spooky just yeah that was like
00:21:42
just gonna say that's horror right there
00:21:45
they are horrified yeah I would take
00:21:49
someone cutting my sheets every single
00:21:51
night and and the lady in the corner
00:21:53
over having to go to middle school again
00:21:55
oh yeah ten times over I welcome it
00:21:58
let's go
00:21:59
yeah yeah yeah yeah well I feel like all
00:22:02
of that is like the perfect transition
00:22:04
into the Jersey Devil yeah we're gonna
00:22:08
talk about the Jersey Devil today or the
00:22:10
devil in the pine bear the Jersey Devil
00:22:12
does he do uh gym tan laundry or is this
00:22:15
a totally different kind of Jersey no no
00:22:17
that's poly D honestly he might though
00:22:19
because there's there's a lot of
00:22:21
different versions of him so who knows
00:22:23
maybe Jersey Shore is a version of maybe
00:22:26
it is is this like chupacabra type a
00:22:29
little bit the New Jersey Devil a little
00:22:31
bit okay yeah it's like lore kind of
00:22:34
stuff so I am all about it I love a good
00:22:36
Cryptid oh nothing like it a good
00:22:39
Cryptid we got so many here because
00:22:41
we're like around the Bridgewater
00:22:42
Triangle where all that fun stuff is I
00:22:46
know I know I remember you guys talking
00:22:47
about out that one time on one of your
00:22:49
episodes about and I was like I want to
00:22:51
go yeah like I will take you on a tour
00:22:54
anytime we will oh my God I I've done
00:22:56
like ghost tours here I did a whole
00:22:58
night at a theater in San Juan
00:23:00
Capistrano and um I did a supernatural
00:23:03
show here as well uh with a couple other
00:23:05
people that was really fun but I yeah I
00:23:07
I I'm the one that like goes and finds
00:23:10
weird old creepy abandoned places and
00:23:11
I'm like you guys we should go in yeah
00:23:13
and everyone else is like sometimes yeah
00:23:18
we gotta take you to the Lizzie Borden
00:23:20
house yes close by us I would oh my God
00:23:23
I want to go there so bad we spent the
00:23:25
night there yeah we did it was wild you
00:23:28
did was it creepy yeah it was horrifying
00:23:31
if we didn't sleep I wouldn't let us
00:23:33
yeah it has the harshest vibe in there
00:23:35
like it is really very hard to relax you
00:23:38
can play feel it yeah like it's heavy
00:23:41
yeah yeah yeah yeah fascinating okay
00:23:43
yeah we'll make plans for that after
00:23:46
yeah okay yeah yeah we'll make our we'll
00:23:48
do our our uh our ghost tour plans after
00:23:50
part two is ghost tour so can't wait so
00:23:53
we're gonna talk about the birth of the
00:23:55
Jersey Devil first so the story of the
00:23:59
Jersey Devil is kind of unique to the
00:24:03
United States for sure it's the Pine
00:24:05
Barrens is where it came out of wow
00:24:07
there's so many things that are so
00:24:09
unique so the United States that are
00:24:10
horrifying it's really and unique is
00:24:12
such a nice way to put it
00:24:14
it's a unique foreign
00:24:20
so the Pine Barrens in New Jersey is a
00:24:23
very dense forested region and it covers
00:24:25
more than 1700 square miles wow which is
00:24:28
apparently 1.1 million Acres holy [ __ ]
00:24:32
that's a lot of Acres
00:24:35
that's many acres and it's in
00:24:38
Southeastern New Jersey so what's really
00:24:41
spooky about this place is that although
00:24:43
New Jersey is one of the more heavily
00:24:45
populated states in the country
00:24:46
according to author James McCloy quote
00:24:49
one can travel in the Pines for many
00:24:52
miles and not encounter a single sign of
00:24:55
modern civilization love that thank God
00:24:58
there's you know too many miles of human
00:25:00
civilization we see it's truly smoke in
00:25:04
space some somewhere you can go like I
00:25:05
forget about those [ __ ] and then
00:25:07
yeah exactly just take me all the way
00:25:09
off the grid into the Pine Barrens with
00:25:11
the Jersey Devil right just yeah
00:25:14
seriously just please stick me in a tree
00:25:19
[Laughter]
00:25:21
have fun guys
00:25:22
like tell me about it later I'm like I
00:25:24
don't think they have Starbucks
00:25:27
so in addition to a large amount of
00:25:30
Timber harvested from the Pines the area
00:25:32
was also really important for being a
00:25:34
source of iron ore and it kind of drove
00:25:37
the iron industry and Munitions
00:25:39
production during the 17th and 18th
00:25:41
century so it was wow okay interesting
00:25:44
yeah yeah I was which I was thinking
00:25:45
like like World War II but no 17 like
00:25:47
yeah yeah it goes way back yeah way back
00:25:49
because you know bullets it's you know
00:25:51
bullets there's always you know bullets
00:25:54
we're always needing bullets again right
00:25:56
a uniquely American [ __ ] I feel where
00:25:58
we're going with this in America no
00:26:01
so it's a pretty critical part of the
00:26:03
Region's economy but when manufacturers
00:26:06
begin relying on cheaper and more
00:26:07
plentiful iron ore from the West in the
00:26:10
mid 19th century what was once a dense
00:26:13
population in and around the Pine
00:26:15
Barrens started to kind of dwindle down
00:26:17
much like many industrial cities of the
00:26:20
East exactly so I'm a big history nerd
00:26:22
I'm gonna just interject on everything
00:26:23
honestly I love that yeah please do so
00:26:27
who remained were this small number of
00:26:31
really like rugged individuals who were
00:26:34
just living off the land kind of thing
00:26:37
they were like we're not leaving The
00:26:39
Hills Have Eyes The Hills Have Eyes
00:26:45
exactly and I think honestly that's kind
00:26:48
of they're a little kid from the
00:26:50
beginning of Deliverance here we go here
00:26:52
we go we're off and I think they're like
00:26:55
the the places around them who were born
00:26:57
to like modern conveniences would
00:26:59
derogatorily refer to them as the pineys
00:27:02
because they were left in the Pine
00:27:03
Barrens and honestly the pineys were
00:27:05
like I don't give a [ __ ] like it's cool
00:27:07
in here it's quiet yeah
00:27:11
so this is kind of Kind of Perfect
00:27:13
setting for one of these Cryptids or
00:27:16
urban legends to come about where it's
00:27:17
like for real the people in the modern
00:27:19
civilization with the people who refuse
00:27:21
to leave the Pine Barrens kind of thing
00:27:23
I think and my Shyamalan did at that
00:27:25
movie yeah isn't it the village The
00:27:27
Village
00:27:29
that's it that's one of those movies you
00:27:32
either love or you hated I love it so
00:27:34
much I actually that's one I I actually
00:27:36
like that one you know again Hit or Miss
00:27:39
but sorry yeah not to do I feel like
00:27:41
that was one that just hit at the end I
00:27:43
was like all right and it took place not
00:27:45
at the pine Barons but exactly or close
00:27:47
enough it's it's reminiscent for sure
00:27:49
it's what I'm imagining it's what I'm
00:27:50
picturing they felt very Salem you know
00:27:53
I could say them yeah yeah yeah yeah
00:27:55
yeah yeah love love we got to take you
00:27:58
to Salem too add it to the list right
00:28:00
it's right over there yes so according
00:28:03
to McCloy one of the earliest versions
00:28:05
of the Jersey Devil's Origins are from a
00:28:07
woman named Jane Leeds
00:28:10
so Leeds lived in estillville New Jersey
00:28:13
which is about an hour away from the
00:28:14
Pine Barrens and she was a mother of 12.
00:28:18
whoa of 12 what just 12 children at the
00:28:22
time well actually yeah 12 children I
00:28:24
will say I mean my dad's much older and
00:28:27
his family each had like 17 and 16 kids
00:28:30
on their his parents side so yeah I get
00:28:32
it oh that's good wow that's a lot I
00:28:34
mean you're living out in the Pine
00:28:35
Barrens you gotta you know the kids
00:28:37
disappear in the Pines so you got to
00:28:39
keep just replacing them Deeper by the
00:28:41
Dozen there you go oh great movie again
00:28:43
and it's I wonder why but she was
00:28:45
actually referred to as mother leads and
00:28:48
I'm like huh where'd you get that name
00:28:49
although who could know the dozens
00:28:51
uh but and she's still referred to as
00:28:55
that when people talk about this story
00:28:56
and well I mean I feel like it'd be
00:28:58
grandmother at this point but it's a
00:28:59
great great grandmother leads just Nana
00:29:02
leads old lady leads old lady leads
00:29:05
so she discovered though that she was
00:29:08
pregnant with another child a 13. 13
00:29:11
child lucky number 13. and she weirdly
00:29:15
enough was not happy about this so she
00:29:18
cursed the pregnancy and said wait
00:29:21
though wait where's the Dad that's kind
00:29:24
of what I'm wondering yeah right he's
00:29:25
the man where's father leads that's my
00:29:29
question where's old man leads over here
00:29:31
where is he in this picture I need to
00:29:34
talk to him that's what I want to know
00:29:36
I'm like what do you mean keep it in
00:29:37
your pants
00:29:38
you got 12 kids my guy this woman is
00:29:42
losing her mind she's out grilling she
00:29:44
was she's just always out grilling he's
00:29:47
like I'm not here sorry he's just like
00:29:48
I've gotta go ride the lawnmower
00:29:50
although this was probably in the days
00:29:52
before riding lawnmowers anyway he's
00:29:54
chopping down wood yeah what time period
00:29:56
are we talking about by the way just so
00:29:58
I can picture what clothes to put these
00:29:59
people in in my mind this was like 1700s
00:30:02
I want to say yeah so he's chopping wood
00:30:05
oh okay got it got it so this is God
00:30:07
even like potato sacks these are just
00:30:09
children coming out of everywhere we are
00:30:11
you know out in the wilderness it is the
00:30:13
17 hundreds things are not awesome why
00:30:17
we came here we don't know everyone's
00:30:20
questioning it everyone's like why are
00:30:22
we here yeah but apparently no one
00:30:23
decided to leave so and she's like I'm
00:30:26
just gonna have all these kids here they
00:30:27
really settle truly they settle they put
00:30:30
down Roots yeah really settled in that's
00:30:32
for [ __ ] [ __ ] they created a
00:30:34
civilization of their own but that it
00:30:36
was that 13th child that she was not
00:30:38
psyched about it's always the it's the
00:30:40
13th kid that really puts you over here
00:30:43
that's the one when you feel truly
00:30:45
outnumbered it's number 13 you're like
00:30:47
you know it's number 13 right yeah right
00:30:49
I felt like I could handle this but up
00:30:51
until then me and all my personalities
00:30:53
are doing pretty well but the 13th man
00:30:55
it's just really a [ __ ] I don't have
00:30:57
that 13th I can't do it when she said
00:31:01
she said I am tired of children Let It
00:31:04
Be The Devil let this baby be the devil
00:31:07
she said which I have a couple questions
00:31:09
like the baby in you yeah like what why
00:31:12
why the devil and two a child would be
00:31:16
easier to do well if she's all I'm
00:31:18
saying is if she's hoping that the baby
00:31:20
is the devil what is wrong with these
00:31:22
kids they must be pretty bad they must
00:31:24
if she's like look I'll take a devil
00:31:26
baby over these [ __ ] you know what I
00:31:29
mean it's like honestly these children
00:31:31
must be wilding out what are your kids
00:31:34
doing like [ __ ] on fire in the Pine
00:31:36
Barrens you know killing small animals
00:31:38
they are they they destroyed half the
00:31:40
pine bears
00:31:42
uh just poor mother leads is like I'd
00:31:45
rather have a devil baby
00:31:46
well you know what she got one maybe
00:31:49
she's like me you know what if I have
00:31:50
one devil baby maybe I'll be about 10
00:31:52
kids lighter there you go and she got it
00:31:54
because apparently this beastly child
00:31:56
came into the world on the evening of a
00:31:59
violent storm that actually came from
00:32:01
the direction of the Pine Barrens in
00:32:04
1735. oh yeah so people also claimed
00:32:08
that mother leads probably indulged in
00:32:11
sorcery as well which easily explains of
00:32:14
course because she's a woman in the
00:32:16
1700s who had a complaint about having
00:32:18
13 babies so therefore she must be aware
00:32:22
get her she's gonna have a devil better
00:32:24
hurry quick she's saying oh she's not a
00:32:27
witch
00:32:27
too late whoops we'll get it right now
00:32:30
we're wrong again
00:32:32
one less mouthy woman to do with so
00:32:34
obviously this is easily what explains
00:32:38
what happened because the legend goes
00:32:40
that mother Leeds gave birth to a
00:32:42
healthy very normal average child but
00:32:45
within minutes of being placed in her
00:32:47
arms the baby began to change into a
00:32:50
terribly Unholy thing now according to
00:32:54
McCloy this is a quote human features
00:32:57
disappeared the body elongated
00:32:59
tremendously forming into a long
00:33:01
Serpentine shape Hooves replace the feet
00:33:04
it's pink chubby baby face coarsened
00:33:07
into a long bony structure of a horse's
00:33:10
head bat wings sprung from its shoulder
00:33:13
blades finally it arose from the bed
00:33:16
larger and more powerful than a fully
00:33:19
grown man then the silence was broken by
00:33:22
the monsters rasping snarls as he curled
00:33:25
his forked thick tail and proceeded no
00:33:29
no this is always funny he proceeded to
00:33:32
beat everyone in the room with it
00:33:36
including mother leads with the tail
00:33:38
with the tail well I mean if he's I look
00:33:41
how big is this room you know what I
00:33:43
mean he might not have meant to this
00:33:45
baby is just born it's trying to get a
00:33:48
hold of itself it's probably turning
00:33:50
around like oh [ __ ] he's got a tail and
00:33:52
just whacking people with his giant tail
00:33:54
like I'm so sorry
00:33:56
and it's just knocking things over maybe
00:33:59
double
00:33:59
down
00:34:01
it's got a lot going on he's got a lot
00:34:03
of appendages to deal with devil baby
00:34:05
was not to blame here you know look I
00:34:08
we've all we've seen the Seinfeld
00:34:10
episode we've all seen some ugly babies
00:34:11
exactly because she's just a really
00:34:13
exceptionally unfortunately stretched
00:34:16
out child they're not cute right when
00:34:18
they're after they're born they look
00:34:19
weird I mean I bumped into a couple
00:34:22
things they do this morning you know I
00:34:25
walked in and I bumped into my coffee it
00:34:27
could have been the same was it your
00:34:28
tail he's got a whole last time to
00:34:30
contend with he might not have meant to
00:34:32
beat everybody with it he was just
00:34:34
stressed no spatial awareness you know
00:34:36
what I mean it's just like I've got a
00:34:38
tail oh my God yeah it's hard it's hard
00:34:40
I mean we've all seen babies babies
00:34:43
don't have any spatial like a toddler
00:34:44
doesn't have spatial awareness and now
00:34:47
all of a sudden this baby's growing from
00:34:49
like just fresh out of the oven baby
00:34:51
into the full grown [ __ ] Batwoman
00:34:53
yeah also I think I read this article in
00:34:57
the New York daily news at the
00:34:58
supermarket uh about three years ago
00:35:02
it was bat baby that's what I'm getting
00:35:05
oh my God boy yeah he used to be on the
00:35:07
front of every tabloid of everything
00:35:09
that very and the weird head and the
00:35:12
eyes like oh man that and that was like
00:35:15
the days before good AI like someone
00:35:17
really [ __ ] photoshopped that thing
00:35:21
into those images together oh yeah it's
00:35:25
sharpened teeth and weird and they like
00:35:27
dark Blues under the eyes look really
00:35:29
tired yeah it was wild a poor thing yeah
00:35:31
and here he was this is his beginning
00:35:33
right here this is his beginning man he
00:35:35
was also loud because he had an ear
00:35:37
piercing Bellow and then he flapped his
00:35:40
huge wings and shot right up the chimney
00:35:42
and out into the night damn he's right
00:35:45
for it he just beat the [ __ ] out of
00:35:47
everybody in the room and then left wow
00:35:49
that's PR it's like a giraffe right
00:35:51
after birth they just get up and go you
00:35:53
know I'm impressed I am impressed he
00:35:56
didn't even need to try and he knew that
00:35:57
the chimney went out which is impressive
00:35:59
Right Out the Oven he was like I bet
00:36:01
that leads so I'm gonna go out there
00:36:03
he's like you know where that goes uh
00:36:05
the air I think that's what that is and
00:36:07
you know what you know what I can fit
00:36:09
through as a full-grown bat human being
00:36:11
a chimney I think so yeah yeah that'll
00:36:14
be fun so according to this account this
00:36:16
very believable account McCoy notes
00:36:19
several sleeping children with the
00:36:21
Jersey Devil's first worldly Meal which
00:36:24
is rude

My Dead Body is back for a fourth season
00:37:54
gone hunting this newest season covers
00:37:57
the story of Mike Williams it was Mike's
00:37:59
sixth wedding anniversary when he set
00:38:01
off on a hunting trip into the gator
00:38:03
infested swamps of North Florida he
00:38:05
figured he'd be back in time to take his
00:38:07
wife Denise out to celebrate but he
00:38:10
never came back friends and loved ones
00:38:12
feared he met his faith through bad luck
00:38:14
and a group of hungry alligators leaving
00:38:17
his young family behind except that's
00:38:19
not what happened at all and after 17
00:38:22
years a kidnapping and the uncovering of
00:38:25
a secret love triangle the truth would
00:38:27
finally be revealed enjoy Over My Dead

00:38:46
thank you
00:38:49
uh other versions say that his first
00:38:51
meal was just the entire Leeds family so
00:38:54
well there's a lot of them to you know
00:38:56
he either ate his entire family all 12
00:39:00
children Mama leads and if there was a
00:39:02
daddy leads he was gone to or he just
00:39:04
went out into the night and ate a bunch
00:39:05
of sleeping kids I mean I would I I feel
00:39:08
like going with the sleeping kids would
00:39:10
probably be an easier get at first you
00:39:13
know what I mean while you're kind of
00:39:14
still learning uh how to function in
00:39:17
this uh weird devil body I think so you
00:39:20
wanna you don't want to work for it I
00:39:22
mean My Kid's first meal was mashed up
00:39:24
avocado but like sleeping babies are I
00:39:28
guess a great first meal sleeping baby
00:39:30
mashed avocado whatever whatever works
00:39:32
whatever you have on hand choices all I
00:39:35
know is I we're all canceled well this
00:39:38
is the end of this that's it this is the
00:39:40
end I hope this was really fun
00:39:42
what a farewell our farewell episode
00:39:45
what a farewell the yep the the leads
00:39:48
batboy is looking to take us all there's
00:39:51
another version of this story too in
00:39:52
case that wasn't good enough so this
00:39:55
version takes poor mother leads totally
00:39:57
out of the equation entirely and maybe
00:39:59
he's Creator oh yeah because now there's
00:40:01
a totally different young woman who is
00:40:03
also lonely it's we got to make sure
00:40:06
that we know she's lonely
00:40:07
um and she's from Leeds point it's the
00:40:10
1700s for women I'm sure she is
00:40:11
everybody no it's not like she's like
00:40:13
hey let's talk about her feelings honey
00:40:15
he's like I'm going to go cut things in
00:40:17
the field and and have another woman
00:40:19
you're a witch so it's like yeah I think
00:40:21
they're all lonely is pretty much it but
00:40:24
apparently this poor woman fell in love
00:40:26
with a British soldier during the
00:40:28
American Revolution and so the obvious
00:40:31
punishment for that is getting a devil
00:40:35
baby because she betrayed the American
00:40:38
cause
00:40:39
obviously that's what I always say yeah
00:40:43
I mean I I feel like that's also a story
00:40:45
that I've heard recently people like you
00:40:47
know what happened a devil baby that's
00:40:49
definitely you're like you know this is
00:40:51
familiar
00:40:52
there are besides this one this one so
00:40:54
that's that's the second way that he
00:40:56
came about was just like oops you
00:40:58
married a British soldier oh oh wait
00:40:59
it's sorry quick tangential question
00:41:01
isn't the New Jersey Devils the name of
00:41:04
their hockey team sure is because now
00:41:06
they're now we're proud of it now we're
00:41:08
like okay it was a thing everybody was
00:41:10
scared of it and then at the end they
00:41:11
were like let's name a hockey team after
00:41:13
it they were like this thing is pretty
00:41:14
rad this thing that eats children
00:41:16
sleeping in bed we're gonna name a
00:41:18
hockey team after it so there are other
00:41:20
less common versions of the story that
00:41:22
kind of incorporate like one or more of
00:41:24
the elements of those two kind of like
00:41:26
mix and match right right right but in
00:41:28
any case they all just result in some
00:41:30
hideous creature being born and either
00:41:33
fleeing or being forcibly cast out into
00:41:36
the Pine Barrens and that's where it
00:41:38
would adapt and live to this very day
00:41:41
so like any Legend the Jersey Devil
00:41:44
exists mostly or in large part I would
00:41:47
say to kind of explain a variety of
00:41:50
unfortunate or difficult events and
00:41:52
phenomena in the region I blame it for
00:41:54
everything I'm everything that's
00:41:56
happening right now
00:41:58
the echo in the zoom it's his fault the
00:42:01
planet's going backwards all of it they
00:42:03
would blame like droughts and crops on
00:42:05
the Jersey Devil cows under producing
00:42:08
milk the Jersey Devil the absence of
00:42:11
fish in a local stream the Jersey Devil
00:42:13
it's all his fault and in one instance
00:42:16
American naval hero Commodore Stephen
00:42:18
how do you say it Dave
00:42:20
Decatur I was like table no Decatur oh
00:42:24
yeah yeah
00:42:25
d-e-c-a-t-e-u-r or whatever there you go
00:42:28
Commodore Stephen Decatur I like it he
00:42:31
visited the Hanover Iron Works in
00:42:33
Burlington New Jersey just to like
00:42:34
oversee the production of cannonballs
00:42:36
because he wanted to make sure they met
00:42:39
his standards and would actually work
00:42:41
you know imagine if that was your job
00:42:42
the oversight of Cannonball truly I just
00:42:45
got to make sure they're cannonballs I
00:42:46
just gotta make sure that the balls are
00:42:48
looking good I just needed to be a
00:42:49
sphere it's here to measure the balls
00:42:55
readying the
00:42:56
case for test firing he observed a
00:42:59
bizarre creature flapping its wings
00:43:01
across the range and everyone present on
00:43:04
the Range that day backed up his that
00:43:06
his aim was perfect when he fired the
00:43:09
cannon directly through the Jersey Devil
00:43:11
and apparently literally ripped a hole
00:43:15
straight through the Jersey Devil but
00:43:16
the Jersey Devil just was like and he
00:43:19
just kept going like merely a flesh
00:43:21
wound and just flew off
00:43:24
at all worried about this but everyone
00:43:27
there was like saw it he shot a
00:43:30
cannonball at the Jersey Devil that's
00:43:31
wild I just picture him like he's just
00:43:34
like flying away right yeah yeah way to
00:43:36
test fire I thought in your general
00:43:38
direction yeah like they reenact the
00:43:41
entire scene for money yeah he's the
00:43:43
original
00:43:44
now across Southern New Jersey the devil
00:43:46
was definitely a common scapegoat um he
00:43:49
was blamed throughout this 19th century
00:43:51
again for like loss of livestock on
00:43:54
farms uh he became the source of howling
00:43:57
and shrieking that would be heard by
00:43:58
Farmers which I'm also like maybe what
00:44:01
was it if it wasn't that maybe we should
00:44:03
investigate yeah I was gonna say it was
00:44:05
someone being murdered and buried on
00:44:06
someone's property is what that was
00:44:08
we're just blaming a Cryptid but every
00:44:10
now and then apparently the devil would
00:44:12
make his way out of the Pines and would
00:44:14
be spotted on battlefields and more
00:44:16
heavily populated areas like Atlantic
00:44:19
City so there were sightings he's a
00:44:20
tourist you know he just wants to see
00:44:22
the sights that feels also very on brand
00:44:25
for the Jersey Devil like hey I'm gonna
00:44:27
go to some battlefields and Atlanta City
00:44:31
you know what I mean like I'm gonna go
00:44:33
blow some [ __ ] up with those cannonballs
00:44:35
and gamble exactly it really makes sense
00:44:39
has anyone ever seen the Jersey Devil
00:44:41
and a certain former president
00:44:45
I'm thinking
00:44:46
entire time how do we know
00:44:50
I never have are there right I can say I
00:44:54
haven't
00:44:55
but who am I to say That's All She Wrote
00:44:57
has it been on a Simpsons episode
00:44:59
because if it has if it has then we know
00:45:01
it is true then we know okay I like it
00:45:05
but
00:45:07
it wasn't really until the very end of
00:45:09
the 19th century that he began to begin
00:45:12
to appear in news reports that's when we
00:45:14
started reporting on him got it got it
00:45:16
he started giving interviews then that's
00:45:18
when he was like his manager was like
00:45:20
you really need to give a quote yeah he
00:45:21
got it he was like this yeah I was like
00:45:23
look dude you've got to get out and
00:45:24
fight the story I know it's you you've
00:45:28
got to let people know what's going on
00:45:29
exactly you got to give your room you
00:45:31
want to you know people are going to
00:45:32
misunderstand me no one's gonna listen
00:45:34
they're gonna take it out of context and
00:45:36
I'm just eating babies you know that's I
00:45:38
I it's hard it's hard there's that whole
00:45:40
story where I beat everyone in the room
00:45:42
upon birth
00:45:43
and he's like I just was it was my
00:45:45
channel No One's Gonna believe that
00:45:48
right so I get it he's in a difficult
00:45:50
position and we believe you I'm so sorry
00:45:52
I've come on as a guest to your show and
00:45:54
completely taking it off the rails oh no
00:45:56
oh no I love that this is what we need
00:45:58
there are no rails off the rails is
00:46:00
where we live we rarely live on this
00:46:02
we're just gonna say our show has never
00:46:04
ever been on the road yes it shouldn't
00:46:06
be okay good I only like to do off the
00:46:08
rails shows because that's how my brain
00:46:10
works it against our brains as well so
00:46:12
on July 29th 1899 issues of the New
00:46:16
Jersey City News reported that the Beast
00:46:19
had quote reappeared in New Jersey for
00:46:21
the first time since it warned the
00:46:23
pioneers of the approach of the Civil
00:46:25
War which I was like wow I love that he
00:46:28
just is like hey guys this thing is like
00:46:31
Nostradamus too it's also it's all yeah
00:46:34
wait wait who did it warn about the
00:46:37
Civil War that's what I want to someone
00:46:39
and be like hey guys
00:46:42
it's gonna be really [ __ ] up just
00:46:44
letting you know but we're gonna call it
00:46:46
civil
00:46:49
did he tell that did he tell Mr
00:46:51
Cannonball Corporal Decatur I'm saying
00:46:54
Whispering dude I need to know because
00:46:57
someone knew that the Civil War was
00:46:58
coming from the Jersey Devil and didn't
00:47:00
say sure and he didn't pass it on yeah
00:47:02
because because you know the Jersey
00:47:03
Devil was like pass it on and that guy
00:47:06
was like I'm not gonna pass it on yeah
00:47:07
he was like he's gonna let it happen
00:47:08
right and then now he's like I'm getting
00:47:11
a bad name meanwhile I tried to warn
00:47:13
people he's like if I say pass it on you
00:47:15
pass it on you know at the end of this I
00:47:18
think that we're gonna come out that the
00:47:19
Jersey Devil is uh has just been Mis
00:47:22
misaligned this yeah hundreds of years
00:47:25
yeah he misunderstood he needs to do a
00:47:26
tell-all memoir is what he needs to do
00:47:28
okay wait I'll do it right though for
00:47:32
that it's gonna happen I wouldn't I
00:47:33
wouldn't doubt anything these days truly
00:47:35
I don't know I wouldn't either
00:47:38
we're manifesting it it's gonna hit
00:47:39
number four on the like New York Times
00:47:41
bestseller 100 okay yeah yeah good for
00:47:44
him I called that like oh yeah I got the
00:47:47
audiobook so the article described the
00:47:49
Beast as quote a strange combination of
00:47:52
serpentine body horse head cloven Hooves
00:47:55
and forked tail which is pretty much the
00:47:58
origin description oh which okay we're
00:48:00
sticking with the original original body
00:48:02
shape yeah we're going with that she's
00:48:04
gotten to use the tail a little better
00:48:06
at this point though I think he probably
00:48:07
has gotten used to it at this
00:48:12
this year's after bringing considerable
00:48:14
Misfortune to the residents of South
00:48:17
Jersey but wait does that
00:48:20
hanging out and being welcomed in and
00:48:22
people like come on
00:48:27
come on whoa whoa whoa that was you one
00:48:31
too many [ __ ] cows okay buddy you've
00:48:33
gotta go
00:48:35
you crossed a line well several years
00:48:38
later in the spring of 1905 the devil
00:48:41
started making headlines again and this
00:48:43
time with a slightly different story
00:48:46
attached to him now
00:48:47
so in the article oh exactly it changes
00:48:51
a hundred thousand times changing up
00:48:52
right so it's changing he's always
00:48:54
evolving with the times the old story
00:48:56
wasn't working not getting as much
00:48:57
traction exactly change it up a little
00:48:59
bit Yeah change it up so the article was
00:49:02
titled story of the Leeds devil and a
00:49:05
reporter for Camden's Morning Post
00:49:06
newspaper alleged that the devil had
00:49:09
been born many years ago in Bordentown
00:49:11
New Jersey and was the product of a
00:49:14
relationship between an American sea
00:49:16
captain and his wife oh well now it does
00:49:19
it does involve because they called him
00:49:22
they called the woman a Tarleton before
00:49:24
she married the captain which when I
00:49:27
first heard that I was like is that like
00:49:28
a mixture of a harlot like a harlot and
00:49:32
a charlatan yeah like a lion a lying
00:49:35
that's what I thought it would be this
00:49:37
woman but apparently a Tarleton is a
00:49:40
village in England so I think they were
00:49:42
just going back to that whole like
00:49:45
it's not an American so that's what
00:49:47
happened but like the mother leads
00:49:50
origin story the captain's wife wished
00:49:52
not to have a second child and was not
00:49:55
psyched about the baby but even before
00:49:57
it was born so she gave birth to a child
00:50:00
bearing a close resemblance to the
00:50:03
Orthodox devil oh so now we're getting
00:50:05
the real devil into it and exactly and
00:50:07
now that this oh the the
00:50:09
bassamet the one with the horns and the
00:50:12
bathroom yeah like the whole he's
00:50:15
literally right there he is he's hanging
00:50:17
out right here yes I love him so yeah
00:50:19
he's so cool looking it is right he's
00:50:21
great he's doing the whole like as above
00:50:23
both so below thing uh yeah the whoop
00:50:25
piece so that's this is what that baby
00:50:28
did it was like whoop hey and they were
00:50:29
like that's not okay so they're like no
00:50:32
thank you so judgmental really it's like
00:50:35
he's just trying to get you into the
00:50:36
location for your thinking that's all
00:50:38
listen to what he has to say man but
00:50:41
apparently he became known in the
00:50:43
neighborhood as the leads devil and and
00:50:45
I love because when this came out it was
00:50:47
just walking to school with his backpack
00:50:52
you know I'm just get to chemistry but
00:50:54
yeah exactly I love it second period man
00:50:57
because it said like it was a surprise
00:50:58
to no one that she gave birth to the
00:51:01
devil and it's like to no one like no
00:51:04
one was I don't know I feel like I would
00:51:05
be surprised if I was there
00:51:07
she's from England so I'm just gonna I'm
00:51:10
gonna invent Tarleton though as the word
00:51:13
that we describe and just start using it
00:51:15
it feels right like the words it's got a
00:51:18
guitar to it yeah you Tarleton and you
00:51:21
can say it to people and they know they
00:51:22
won't know what yeah at all but yeah but
00:51:24
they'll know it's an insult that's for
00:51:25
sure because it's got all those forms in
00:51:27
it one of those great words that you
00:51:29
don't quite know what it means but you
00:51:30
know it's supposed to slap you hell yeah
00:51:32
I love those Harleton so despite being
00:51:35
described as looking like the Orthodox
00:51:37
devil and being described as a demon
00:51:40
human hybrid the morning post said that
00:51:42
the Beast is not just something of
00:51:44
Legend but was actually a real creature
00:51:47
that terrorized the town until it
00:51:49
crawled into the fireplace and up the
00:51:51
chimney and into the Pine Barrens so
00:51:53
it's always going up a chimney but once
00:51:56
he had left to go in the Pines he would
00:51:57
be seen by townsfolk in and around the
00:52:00
pines and in the woodlands and desolate
00:52:02
tracks in the southern section of the
00:52:04
state
00:52:05
so that was going on and then for much
00:52:08
of the 19th century the story it
00:52:11
appeared in newspapers from time to time
00:52:13
but it kind of was just like a oral
00:52:15
storytelling thing and by the beginning
00:52:17
of the 20th century all of a sudden
00:52:19
there was a rash of sightings in more
00:52:22
than 30 different towns and it elevated
00:52:24
this story to be like a full-blown like
00:52:27
National thing that everybody okay there
00:52:30
you go and during the week of January 16
00:52:33
1909 thousands of people from Southern
00:52:36
New Jersey to Trenton reported seeing
00:52:39
the Jersey Devil or at least seeing the
00:52:41
tracks left behind so in Trenton the
00:52:45
devil's hoof Prince were discovered in
00:52:47
White Horse Park and in some backyards
00:52:49
of a bunch of residence houses oh my God
00:52:52
imagine if that was your house I'm
00:52:54
saying I would think that was pretty
00:52:55
cool I would think that was awesome I'd
00:52:57
be excited yeah like I want a Bigfoot to
00:53:00
just walk through my backyard oh I
00:53:02
didn't say that I did yeah I want that
00:53:06
hey and just have him walk right through
00:53:09
I would say yeah just hey hey so cool to
00:53:12
see you yeah I want I get it yeah you
00:53:14
don't want to be you want to be left
00:53:15
alone out here minding your business
00:53:17
having your lunch you know I get I'm not
00:53:19
gonna blow up your spot I just want to
00:53:20
say hi yeah I see your hat that says no
00:53:23
pictures it's okay
00:53:25
that's fine you're addressed in Disguise
00:53:27
your security people are with you I get
00:53:29
it carry on carry on my friend thanks
00:53:31
for the visit yeah but one of the
00:53:33
residents told the local local reporter
00:53:36
I recognize the tracks from those
00:53:38
reproduced in the newspapers they look
00:53:40
to me as if it was the hoof of was that
00:53:42
of a young cult not a cloven hoof as
00:53:45
I've heard of it being described so if
00:53:48
it was a young that person probably then
00:53:49
got murdered by the rest of the
00:53:51
townspeople they were like
00:53:53
like you guys I'm pretty sure it's just
00:53:55
like a small horse on the list
00:53:59
it's just an animal though they're like
00:54:01
you're a witch yeah and apparently after
00:54:04
these reports came out in Trenton
00:54:06
letters from residents in nearby towns
00:54:08
started reporting sightings of what they
00:54:10
described as a one-legged one-footed
00:54:13
bird that had been lurking about the
00:54:16
city and attacking somebody once oh one
00:54:19
like you had a Wonder bird I had a
00:54:21
one-legged bird I had a canary
00:54:24
anyway that's my one-legged Canary Story
00:54:25
please you had like a one-third Jersey
00:54:28
Devil
00:54:30
it's a good two just edit it out just
00:54:31
edit all of it out just just the intro
00:54:33
hi welcome Jody sweet and then edit
00:54:35
everything else I said out and be like
00:54:37
let's get to the [ __ ] point
00:54:38
I thought Jody Sweetin was like she was
00:54:41
she was really here like too much
00:54:45
never never so the attacks caused a
00:54:49
small panic but to a long uh Southern
00:54:52
and Northern New Jersey so much so and
00:54:55
this I would say this is more than a
00:54:56
small Panic they um actually closed
00:54:58
schools and factories down at one point
00:55:01
because they were so panicked and
00:55:03
residents were locking their doors and
00:55:05
windows like scared this thing was going
00:55:07
to come into their house
00:55:23
that was his thing he was like I don't
00:55:25
want to be shot by a cannonball again
00:55:27
I'm gonna shut all this [ __ ] down and I
00:55:28
don't want these kids getting smart
00:55:30
enough to go work in a factory
00:55:34
[Music]
00:55:35
foreign
00:55:42
[Music]
00:55:45
man in Bristol was actually awakened one
00:55:49
night to his young daughter screams in
00:55:51
the night and when he ran into her room
00:55:53
he saw through the window a large Beast
00:55:57
standing just outside along the banks of
00:56:00
the river and he described the noises it
00:56:02
was making as quote like the scratching
00:56:04
of a phonograph before the music begins
00:56:07
and yet it also had something of a
00:56:09
whistle to it you know how the factory
00:56:11
whistle sounds well it was something
00:56:13
like that and I said no sir I don't know
00:56:16
what the factory whistle sounds like but
00:56:17
I can imagine
00:56:18
wait was that a quote that was no that
00:56:21
was me that was me at the end that was
00:56:23
just you got it got it wouldn't that be
00:56:25
amazing if the reporter was like I don't
00:56:27
know what that sounds like but thank you
00:56:28
but it sounds like a phonograph like
00:56:33
rare and then it also sounds like
00:56:37
I would imagine you know what though
00:56:39
have you ever heard it have you ever
00:56:40
heard cats fighting on your roof at two
00:56:42
in the morning I can't say I have I'm
00:56:44
just saying that [ __ ] sounds like the
00:56:47
devil
00:56:49
I'm not a huge fan of cats but that is I
00:56:52
just I can't imagine what like mouth
00:56:54
shape this thing was making to make
00:56:56
those kinds of sounds like the like
00:56:58
scratch sounds and then the like whoa
00:57:00
it was like you know it's sort of like
00:57:02
beatboxing you know you watch people
00:57:04
you're like I don't know how you're
00:57:05
making that noise with your mouth but
00:57:06
it's like coming out yeah I mean they're
00:57:08
like doing it all at once that's
00:57:10
actually hilarious not like I just did
00:57:11
because that was terrible
00:57:13
that was really good I liked it it was
00:57:15
also like kind of like ventriloquism you
00:57:17
know yeah maybe he had like a mini
00:57:19
Jersey devil and he was like Watch what
00:57:22
it does
00:57:23
and his mouth is just doing the side
00:57:24
thing yeah look at this like it's I like
00:57:27
that
00:57:28
I feel like holy [ __ ] now everyone from
00:57:32
children to police officers reported
00:57:35
seating seeing the Jersey Devil and in
00:57:37
one case patrolman James Sackville woof
00:57:41
pause
00:57:42
yeah yeah just putting that out there of
00:57:46
the Bristol police reported going to
00:57:48
investigate reports of dogs howling and
00:57:51
barking in a residence yard and when he
00:57:53
turned to leave the area he ended up
00:57:55
finding himself standing right in front
00:57:57
of the Jersey Devil also this guy
00:58:00
patrolman James Sackville he went on to
00:58:02
serve as the city's chief of police oh
00:58:04
damn and he described the devil as
00:58:07
winged and hopping like a bird but also
00:58:10
had the features of some peculiar animal
00:58:12
and he claimed which this is my favorite
00:58:15
claim because I'm like no you didn't he
00:58:18
claims that he ran towards the Beast and
00:58:20
I was like did you James did you oh
00:58:22
whatever I don't know I don't know about
00:58:25
that untrue if this thing is standing
00:58:28
there looking the way it looks and it
00:58:29
goes
00:58:31
he had a reputation too you [ __ ]
00:58:33
yourself and then you ran away and
00:58:35
changed and then you were like I ran
00:58:36
after it and you did not sorry yeah no
00:58:38
way and he and he also said this thing
00:58:40
ran away from him this thing retreated
00:58:43
down the path
00:58:45
he also said that it emitted a
00:58:48
frightening cry or it's frightening cry
00:58:50
until it flew out of sight so it went
00:58:53
rare and then ran out of it was like
00:58:55
remix I'm Gonna Leave remix
00:58:57
Now While most two claim to have seen
00:58:59
the Beast described it as bird-like at
00:59:01
least with the wings and all that and
00:59:03
that like screechy sound well some used
00:59:05
completely unique descriptions ew
00:59:08
Minister Bristol's postmaster at the
00:59:10
time described the devil as having a
00:59:13
head resembling that of a ram with
00:59:15
curled horns and he said his neck was
00:59:19
thrust forward in flight
00:59:21
so he was just living yeah he's just
00:59:23
he's just living but he ended up making
00:59:26
his way south from Trenton and uh he
00:59:28
began causing some more Havoc now in the
00:59:31
early morning hours of January 19th Mr
00:59:34
and Mrs Nelson Evans that's my birthday
00:59:36
well a couple on your birthday they were
00:59:41
woken up by strange noises and looked
00:59:44
out their window to find the devil quote
00:59:46
cavorting Before Their Eyes on the roof
00:59:48
of their shed which I just picture him
00:59:50
being like like sassy on the roof of
00:59:53
there just like shimmying a little bit
00:59:54
boarding to me just seems like it's like
00:59:57
what's happening out there cavorting to
00:59:59
me feels like was there was there a lady
01:00:01
she devil you know what I mean was it
01:00:02
were things happening on the roof was
01:00:04
there no that's what I thought or was he
01:00:06
right or was he just by himself which is
01:00:08
weird bro come on don't do that nobody
01:00:10
needs that in the middle of the night
01:00:11
yeah not on my roof don't do it on a
01:00:13
shed copied you converting on the roof
01:00:16
of my house come on go go to the boys
01:00:17
she's got a whole [ __ ] Forest go find
01:00:19
some privacy you've got an entire Pine
01:00:22
Barrens to do that in with like a lack
01:00:24
of civilization this feels inappropriate
01:00:27
sir it really does but in their report
01:00:29
to the newspapers Mr Evans said the
01:00:32
devil was about three feet and a three
01:00:34
feet and a half high with a head like a
01:00:36
collie dog and a face like a horse what
01:00:39
how do you have a head like one thing
01:00:40
and a face like another that's what I
01:00:42
was just thinking well he did have a
01:00:43
long neck Wings about two feet long this
01:00:46
is what's weird though he said his back
01:00:48
legs were like those of a crane and it
01:00:51
had horses hooves what sir I'm sorry
01:00:55
what are you talking about this man had
01:00:58
some chocolate before bed how did how
01:01:01
did brain legs hold this whole thing but
01:01:03
then the feet are horses Hoops it's like
01:01:06
I just also love that nobody can agree
01:01:09
what the [ __ ] this looks like nobody
01:01:10
nobody can he also he also said he
01:01:13
watched this thing for about 10 minutes
01:01:16
in the backyard and then he opened the
01:01:18
window this is my favorite part he said
01:01:20
he opened the window and he went shoo
01:01:23
and the devil turned around barked at
01:01:26
him and then flew away I love that it
01:01:28
took him 10 whole minutes to think what
01:01:31
should I say to this
01:01:32
shoe
01:01:34
and he went rough and then if the devil
01:01:37
leaves when I say shoe I'm not scared
01:01:39
well he wasn't done because by the end
01:01:41
of the week the devil had made its way
01:01:42
down to Philadelphia oh wow a reporter
01:01:45
for the morning call wrote scientists
01:01:47
are puzzled to give a name to the Beast
01:01:50
which is a combination of bat kangaroo
01:01:53
and pony what now he's a kangaroo like
01:01:57
now that we're adding in kangaroo to the
01:01:59
mix I'm like oh I get locking your doors
01:02:01
now I don't want that yes I want to know
01:02:04
you can't just come and kick your door
01:02:05
down you know what I mean yeah part of
01:02:08
it is Kangaroo is it I heard cran legs
01:02:10
in in this same uh the same article from
01:02:14
this reporter for the morning call he
01:02:16
said if something rather weird is not
01:02:18
flying around the condition of Mind of
01:02:20
South Jersey in South Philadelphia would
01:02:22
provide A Feast for students of mob
01:02:25
hallucination so I think this reporter
01:02:27
is like I think you're all hallucinating
01:02:29
yeah but in an editorial in the Atlantic
01:02:33
City Daily Press this one person wrote
01:02:35
when one stops to think about how absurd
01:02:38
is the latest Jersey sensation about the
01:02:40
Leeds devil which has been given much
01:02:42
space in the newspapers of the entire
01:02:44
country one must feel ashamed of himself
01:02:47
to think that he stopped long enough to
01:02:49
read the headlines less the entire
01:02:51
article rude which I was like okay
01:02:54
that's rude that is directly at officers
01:02:59
Officer or whatever his name was that
01:03:02
yeah I was like yeah bro that's true
01:03:04
yeah but I'm like you know like live a
01:03:06
little it's also like let's believe in
01:03:09
this little devil well like are you not
01:03:11
writing an article but can you imagine
01:03:13
if you're like living somewhere and just
01:03:16
con every story is like a pony kangaroo
01:03:18
collie showed up at the door he like
01:03:20
shut up and your editors like you have
01:03:22
to write an article about this
01:03:24
a week later or so sightings of the
01:03:27
Jersey Devil after this little article
01:03:28
the sightings just kind of ended and
01:03:31
everyone was apparently shamed out of
01:03:33
something I was gonna say everyone was
01:03:34
ashamed of themselves ashamed
01:03:36
but then the Jersey Devil the Jersey
01:03:40
Devil was like you guys no like I'm not
01:03:43
letting you be ashamed because he made
01:03:44
just one more appearance in a village
01:03:46
just outside Salem that February before
01:03:49
returning to the Pine Barrens so in the
01:03:52
months and years that followed people
01:03:54
all over Southern New Jersey in Northern
01:03:57
Pennsylvania started to theorize as to
01:03:59
what could have caused the sightings and
01:04:02
they were blaming it on everything from
01:04:03
a complete hoax and misidentified
01:04:06
creatures to genuine sightings of the
01:04:09
actual Jersey Devil the Brooklyn meteor
01:04:12
research Society suggested it was quote
01:04:14
a type of marsupial carnivore which a
01:04:17
kangaroo is a marsupial correct that's
01:04:19
what I was just gonna say or fish a ped
01:04:21
both previously thought to be extinct so
01:04:24
we're thinking it's like an extinct
01:04:25
creature that we are like oh [ __ ] we're
01:04:28
wrong what is a fish a ped it's just
01:04:30
when you have toes separated to the base
01:04:32
so it's it just means clove and footed
01:04:34
oh okay that makes sense so they thought
01:04:36
that was extinct and they were like
01:04:38
maybe it's not in the Academy of Natural
01:04:40
Science on the other hand told reporters
01:04:42
there was no bird which could make such
01:04:44
tracks in the snow and there is no
01:04:46
scientific record of such animals or as
01:04:49
have been described in the newspapers so
01:04:51
they're like shut up shut up if the
01:04:54
Academy of Natural Sciences was unable
01:04:57
to find evidence of any animal that
01:04:59
would resemble anything described in the
01:05:01
papers it's probably because despite
01:05:04
some of the overlap in those
01:05:05
descriptions like you know the wings and
01:05:08
the the horse feet and the cloven Hooves
01:05:10
and all that stuff they also varied so
01:05:14
wildly from one description to the next
01:05:16
that it's like of course you're not
01:05:17
going to find something that makes sense
01:05:18
yeah no okay and also you know at night
01:05:22
cavorting on a roof there's no you know
01:05:24
there's no street lights there's no
01:05:25
outdoor lights not like you can sleep on
01:05:27
the the garage sensor light you know
01:05:29
what I mean it is you are just going by
01:05:31
what you see dancing in the door they're
01:05:33
Dancing in the Moonlight and you just
01:05:34
woke up too so you're groggy then many
01:05:38
years after the Jersey Devil Panic of
01:05:40
1909 had kind of ended people in and
01:05:42
around South Jersey started reporting
01:05:45
reportedly started attempting to create
01:05:48
additional action by making their own
01:05:50
Jersey Devil Footprints and Reporting
01:05:53
them to the authority parties in the
01:05:54
Press they wanted to start it up again
01:05:56
right right right right because I'm sure
01:05:57
that hadn't happened before that was
01:06:00
yeah of course not all those other ones
01:06:03
yeah
01:06:04
in one case Philadelphia animal trainer
01:06:07
was hoping to bolster attendance to his
01:06:10
performances so he kind of contributed
01:06:13
to the Press with the whole thing he
01:06:14
told reporters his vampire bat had
01:06:17
escaped and was on the loose and
01:06:19
attributed that to the increase in Devil
01:06:22
sightings it's like oh sorry and
01:06:23
actually then this leads right into one
01:06:25
of the biggest hoaxes was from that was
01:06:29
probably the one that Norman Jeffries of
01:06:31
New York did he was an entrepreneur with
01:06:34
a real penchant for very bizarre
01:06:36
promotional events he he wanted to
01:06:38
capitalize on the whole hysteria
01:06:40
surrounding the devil so he bought a
01:06:43
small kangaroo from a friend in Upstate
01:06:46
New York and planned to pass it off as
01:06:49
the Jersey Devil so there were small
01:06:51
kangaroos in Upstate New York is what
01:06:53
I'm saying there were but it's not my
01:06:56
issue thank you why is there a kangaroo
01:06:59
in Upstate New York your guess is as
01:07:02
good as mine and it gets worse because
01:07:04
he painted green stripes on the kangaroo
01:07:07
but the kangaroo licked the paint off
01:07:09
before it dried oh now the kangaroo's
01:07:12
got lead poisoning so then he attempted
01:07:13
to attach a set of wings and apparently
01:07:16
the kangaroo just demolished the wings
01:07:18
that he made because it's a kangaroo and
01:07:19
it's like why the [ __ ] are you putting
01:07:21
Wings on it was like I'm already cool
01:07:22
enough on my own yeah he's like I'm a
01:07:24
[ __ ] kangaroo what are you doing I'm
01:07:26
yoked I am yoked don't mess with me so
01:07:30
he made a second set of wings out of
01:07:32
bronze and rabbit fur and that worked he
01:07:35
put the wings on his jersey devil and
01:07:37
then he draped the kangaroo in Nets and
01:07:40
paid about 10 like local heathens to act
01:07:44
as Farmers with pitchforks surrounding
01:07:47
the animal in a cage oh that makes me
01:07:49
really sad me too so horrible like [ __ ]
01:07:51
you man this animal's like what is wrong
01:07:54
with you I'm just a small give me back
01:07:58
and I yeah that's all yeah that's all
01:08:01
he's like I belong in Australia get me
01:08:03
the [ __ ] out of here and this whole
01:08:05
thing happened in the basement of the
01:08:07
dime Museum and Spectators were let in
01:08:10
one by one to look at the Jersey Devil
01:08:13
but they could only look at it for a
01:08:15
second or two when the curtain would be
01:08:17
lifted and then it would be dropped
01:08:19
immediately
01:08:20
but throughout the 19th century
01:08:22
residents of Southern New Jersey feared
01:08:24
the Jersey Devil and they panicked at
01:08:26
the mere mention of a sighting it was a
01:08:28
big deal and stories of his presence
01:08:30
would circulate from town to town and
01:08:33
sometimes posses were formed to capture
01:08:35
it and bounties were placed for on its
01:08:38
head some ranging from a hundred to a
01:08:39
hundred thousand dollars and by the
01:08:42
1930s societal attitudes toward the
01:08:45
devil kind of changed because all of a
01:08:48
sudden instead of foreign Posse to go
01:08:50
you know to put a bounty on his head
01:08:52
they were like we kind of love him like
01:08:55
he's kind of our God
01:08:59
and in 1938 the Jersey Devil was
01:09:02
officially designated as the state demon
01:09:06
of New Jersey making it the first only
01:09:10
state demon in the country wow I was
01:09:13
gonna say wait wait wait that that feels
01:09:15
like it implies that there's other state
01:09:17
demons and I would like to know that I
01:09:19
was so hoping there was more can we make
01:09:22
more I would love to make it it sounds
01:09:24
like you could you know that there's
01:09:26
some states in this country that
01:09:28
definitely I'm like I could think of a
01:09:29
feeling I could think of some demons
01:09:30
that we could name and while sightings
01:09:34
of the creature definitely became less
01:09:35
common than they once were like we
01:09:38
talked about earlier it the name became
01:09:40
popular and even became the name of an
01:09:43
NHL talkie team called the New Jersey
01:09:45
Devils look at that foreshadowing there
01:09:47
you go look at I I can't believe I first
01:09:50
of all I can't believe I knew the name
01:09:51
of the NHL hockey team for New Jersey
01:09:53
that is a random ass piece of
01:09:55
information that was good um but
01:09:57
secondly Wow way to just be it would be
01:10:00
like if we had just uh the bad boy NHL
01:10:04
team the bad boys
01:10:06
that was a good baseball team a bad boys
01:10:09
although I don't think anybody would be
01:10:11
very like intimidated by them I don't
01:10:13
think so either I'd be like here hold my
01:10:15
back here
01:10:17
as far as We Know
01:10:22
come on that's that's right so you know
01:10:25
what bat boys it is that boys there you
01:10:28
go bad boys but the Jersey Devil never
01:10:30
went away he still he appears in books
01:10:32
and television shows he's in video games
01:10:34
he's in movies he's like he's on late
01:10:36
night talk shows you know he he is at
01:10:40
the Forefront of Licensing out his
01:10:42
Imaging to AI is what he's doing yeah
01:10:44
yeah
01:10:45
he's gonna be on the next one of like
01:10:47
the hot wing show I've been trying to
01:10:50
start my DJ career all of a sudden now
01:10:52
he's like I'm a SoundCloud rapper I've
01:10:55
got you know I've got I've got a podcast
01:10:57
so I've got an NHL team really his
01:11:00
branding and marketing is genius
01:11:05
it all started in the beginning she was
01:11:07
like give a quote find him on Tick Tock
01:11:09
guys yeah this is the Jersey Devil doing
01:11:12
trending dances that's him I would love
01:11:15
that
01:11:16
so that that's the story of the Jersey
01:11:19
Devil that was so much fun I really like
01:11:22
that the Jersey Devil is fun yeah I kind
01:11:24
of love it rarely does it wind up in the
01:11:27
naming of an NHL hockey team you know
01:11:42
oh you guys this was so much fun this
01:11:45
was so much fun thank you so much for
01:11:47
coming on yeah seriously you are
01:11:49
literally welcome back you are at any
01:11:50
time anytime well what I'm gonna start
01:11:53
doing now is listening to the podcast
01:11:54
when I'm driving around my car and just
01:11:56
interjecting my own thoughts uh that you
01:11:59
will neither be able to hear nor will
01:12:01
anyone else but I'll feel like I'm a
01:12:02
part of the podcast voice note them to
01:12:04
us I was just gonna say we'll exchange
01:12:06
numbers and you can voice note it no
01:12:08
seriously this has been so much fun I'm
01:12:09
such a huge fan of you guys I love I
01:12:11
love your energy I love like the the
01:12:13
vibe everything it's great for somebody
01:12:15
who also obviously tells stories with
01:12:18
1500 Side Stories it's really great to
01:12:21
listen to
01:12:22
thank you so much and we're huge fans so
01:12:25
this was a big deal I think what was it
01:12:28
that Drew said Drew goes this my fiance
01:12:30
he goes this is your biggest guest like
01:12:33
and I was like I agree yeah I was like
01:12:36
yes and our researcher Dave who did like
01:12:39
all of the research for the Jersey Devil
01:12:42
stuff great working huge fan huge
01:12:44
Hallmark he's in the room hi Dave great
01:12:48
job right you did great yeah I know
01:12:49
you're always doing a lot of research
01:12:50
and you do a really great job with it
01:12:52
hell yeah
01:12:54
research yeah yeah because I I know how
01:12:57
it is having a podcast if I were left to
01:13:00
do all of my own work it would it would
01:13:02
be a [ __ ] show so yeah we did for a
01:13:05
while and then we were like well then it
01:13:07
was like chaotic and we were like help
01:13:09
helped him yeah
01:13:11
and Dave swooped in like the Jersey
01:13:14
Devil and said I've got you he beat us
01:13:16
with his tail he pulled it out of his
01:13:18
little pouch because he's a smoking room
01:13:19
yeah yeah he flew in the room and great
01:13:23
he was just storing it well this has
01:13:26
been amazing well thank you guys so much
01:13:28
for listening thank you Jody for joining
01:13:30
us we hope you guys keep listening and
01:13:32
we hope you keep it
01:13:35
weird
01:13:37
but not so weird that you actually want
01:13:39
to like stitching on like Hooves onto a
01:13:42
small kangaroo and putting it on your
01:13:43
roof to cavort and then trying to sell
01:13:44
it to stores and and make a big thing
01:13:46
about it naming it in NHL hockey team
01:13:48
like don't keep it that weird but almost
01:13:49
never
01:13:51
perfect that was fantastic because all
01:13:54
of a sudden I was like [ __ ] I'm blinking
01:13:55
yes
01:13:58
it's happening
01:14:01
