00:00:47
episode we're going to be talking about the title my best friend's exorcism it was written by Grady Hendrix so let's
00:00:54
talk about it yay yay I'm such a like woo girl right now we're all woo girls right We're looping it up the
00:01:04
energy it is woo woo it is it's a bit woo woo it is and spooky this title is something I'm really excited to talk to
00:01:12
you guys about cuz it's all about like friendship and spooky friendship spooky as demons our favorite we love that's
00:01:22
how we became friends it's true the dark spookies and demons and ghosties luckily
00:01:28
none of us has been demonically possessed yet no exting I have been around a demon my sister we used to joke
00:01:35
she was possessed but she might have been maybe really I also had someone one a previous relationship uh wonder if I
00:01:41
was possessed and that's why I was leaving wow do you feel like you were um possessed with something good yeah
00:01:51
possessed with new found strength get the hell out of there I love it Y what a way to justify
00:01:57
someone leaving you're like well you must be possessed by a demon if you're leaving me obviously obviously that's
00:02:03
the only way yeah well I think we should start out first by just gushing over gredy
00:02:10
Hendricks what I think 100% I've never read a a greedy Hendrick title before this and you two have like you guys are
00:02:16
big fans right I had seen grd Hendrick like some of the films he yes like um satanic Panic satanic Panic you seen
00:02:24
that one so good so good I'm a huge grd Hendrick girl I love his books love his writing love hearing him talk like his
00:02:34
interviews are some of the funniest interviews you will ever read or hear I was telling Elina I don't know why but
00:02:40
he reminds me of Bill NY he has such good bill NY Vibes it's The Vibes kind of you kind of want him to be your dad
00:02:48
and he's smart like yeah yeah I get that you get it I get it and he's so like he's very insightful but he's also very
00:02:56
unserious all the time which is fun I love people like that well we were just talking a minute ago about the
00:03:03
dedication of this book which was hilarious cuz the dedication I feel like I need to read it for so I had to write
00:03:10
this down after I listened to the title because the dedication in this book Sabrina had brought it up and I was like
00:03:16
wait a second we had to look up what this what was what yeah it says for Amanda who knows the reasons why and
00:03:24
there's an asterisk next to it and then underneath it says but if she doesn't I would suggest she have her attorney both
00:03:30
protective orders filed against her the criminal complaint which outlines these reasons in great detail and maybe also
00:03:36
her conscience because disclosing the whereabouts of the bodies will finally bring some kind of closure for my family
00:03:41
so all of us were like who the [ __ ] is Amanda and what does she know and who the [ __ ] did she
00:03:46
kill seriously turns out Amanda is Grady Hendrick's wife and that's all in good fun he dedicates everything every book
00:03:54
to her every title to her and he always makes a joke that's love I love that I loved it so much it's the best I think
00:04:01
that shows you right there what you're getting into with a grd Hendrick book it really does yeah and it's funny because
00:04:10
with this title in particular uh I wanted it's like such a different way of going about like a
00:04:17
possession story it is because we're used to and I've never thought of it this way but I read an interview with
00:04:23
Grady that said he was like most of these stories are from the point of view of like a priest the
00:04:30
like having hisi Ted he toise this demon and he said it's always some like young
00:04:36
girl or some young woman tied to a bed right possessed by a demon and there's just this old man screaming at her and
00:04:42
he's like I'm kind of over that yeah it's been done yeah so he said he wanted to do it from the point of view of the
00:04:49
is it the de demoniac I think it's called I think you're right yeah is the person that is possessed which I love
00:04:54
that the demoniac demoniac I think that's how you say it if it's not that's how I say
00:05:00
that's how we say it right I feel like that's it's like saying Craven a crow Raven demoniac yeah exactly you don't
00:05:07
know if it's a crow if it's a raven it's a craven yeah yeah um I agree it actually this is like the combo I kept
00:05:15
putting in my head it's like pen 15 met Jennifer's Body yes that is so funny because so many
00:05:22
people have put two up against each other two things like that together to describe this book and they all work
00:05:29
like he said what was it Heathers and one he says beaches meets The Exorcist that's I mean that way and I think it's
00:05:38
like Heathers and The Exorcist Ora it was hea Heathers and The Exorcist all of those things work it also made me want
00:05:44
to so badly go back and find my like 17 magazines quizzes that I had taken and find the answers that I would put back
00:05:52
when I was that age it really Nostalgia bomb yeah Nostalgia yeah I was asking Elena when you you were listening to it
00:06:00
were you like answering the questions oh absolutely I love it I truly I went through and I found the questions and I
00:06:07
wanted us to answer them we should we were thinking that too that's a great idea well I saw somebody say that they
00:06:14
were answering them as Abby to see and they were like it's making her look kind of unhinged so like is Abby the problem
00:06:22
the whole time I was listening I was like it it does suck because poor Abby is the one who now looks like she's
00:06:30
crazy yes and nobody is listening to her whatsoever like one of the one of the parts that like broke my heart the most
00:06:37
is when she actually and there's going to be spoilers in this just so you guys know yeah um one of my one of the parts
00:06:41
that broke my heart the most was when she sits down finally with like Mr and Mrs Lang and starts to talk to them
00:06:46
about what's going on and she's talking to them about like some really serious stuff like trigger warning she's talking
00:06:52
to them about rape right and they're like don't say that about our daughter you did drugs with her you're the
00:06:57
problem get out of our house yeah we'll have you arest you say that to anyone else right you're
00:07:01
on drugs yeah they tell everyone else that she's on drugs yeah like they call her school and say she's on drugs and
00:07:09
she's on scholarship right so they like purposely and that's like a big thing in
00:07:13
this too and that's why I I like aby's Mom I felt had such good like she had good advice for Abby it was just like
00:07:22
being given in the wrong way I think a lot of times or she just wasn't able to right take it in when she needed to yeah
00:07:29
because one of the things is like aby's on scholarship at this private school and Gretchen his family is very wealthy
00:07:36
all her friends families are very wealthy and aby's Mom at one point is like you shouldn't be hanging out with
00:07:42
these people like these wealthy people can pay themselves out of their problems and if you're with them we can't do that
00:07:49
so you'll be the scapegoat they'll throw it on you exactly what happened Mama Knows Best and I was like aby's Mom Mary
00:07:58
I think her name is Mary it is Mary it's like damn yeah I think that's one of the
00:08:01
major themes in this is like the class differences between everybody and you see it all became her problem yeah it
00:08:08
did and it's but shout out to Abby for being the realest friend out there realest that and the most like resilient
00:08:15
human being because like the amount of time it took for her to actually break and then even when she breaks she's not
00:08:21
broken she's like all right I'll go back for she still like yeah I'm going to keep doing this it's like she put up
00:08:26
boundaries with Gretchen but then she would like break the boundary when it needed to be broken like she was like I
00:08:32
was like you you're okay oh at the end just like the beautiful friendship story my God I cried at the end I did too it's
00:08:40
emotional it's beautiful so beautiful she was holding her hands and like oh that I think that is one of the most
00:08:47
beautiful things about this title is that it has every element and Grady captured one the like nitty-gritty and
00:08:55
like the complexities of friendship especially in high school and like going through that evolution in life on top of
00:09:02
terrifying us with the exercising and the demonic possession stuff and moments like the um freaking
00:09:11
tapm we'll never forget that'll but then pulling out your heartstrings yeah yes yeah no definitely and there's no
00:09:19
[ __ ] love story in it which made the love story was with the friend and that made me happy me Disturbed I don't know
00:09:26
but like no we need more things like that female friendships he was beautiful exactly and he's really he did such a
00:09:34
good job I I've seen people say that they had no idea this was written by a man you would not know because it was
00:09:42
like little things like I think we were talking about it earlier it was like um you know when because this takes place
00:09:48
in the 80s so he he puts a lot of things from the 80s like the satanic Panic of it all 80s culture skting roller skating
00:09:57
like all these cool little and one of them is the their like gym teacher or whoever it is talking to them about
00:10:03
Bartles and James wine coolers go love hilarious they're like super sweet and they taste so good and they'll sneak up
00:10:11
on you cuz they have lots of alcohol in them and but he's only they're only talking to the you'll lose your precious
00:10:16
your precious gift and like that and they keep saying it just to the girls this is your your responsibility to not
00:10:24
have yourself taken advantage cuz you'll lose and once you lose your precious gift you won't be worth anything and
00:10:30
it's like which is a dum [ __ ] idea all together 100% and the girls are hearing this and ab's like I so she
00:10:36
turns to remember she turns to Gretchen and she's like wants to say like your precious gift and she's like I wanted it
00:10:43
to be something that we said to each other like the Hefty Hefty Hefty a thing and I was like that's such like girl
00:10:49
friendship like it's like you latch onto this one phrase and you'll just use it forever with each other and it was
00:10:57
little things like that like nuances but he got so well you know what it is he captures the religion of being a teenage
00:11:05
girl like what their religion is not like like there are themes of religion throughout with like actual like
00:11:12
religion but aside from that and like I think the more important religion and the one that was highlighted here is the
00:11:19
religion of your friendships with your girlfriends in high school like Girl Code yes yeah and that's that's one of
00:11:25
the things he had said I've seen him in interviews say that like possession stories are again about a priest and you
00:11:32
know like a demon and Faith being tested and he was like but it to me like in high school yeah your most important
00:11:39
thing and you're the thing that you know grounds you and the thing that you look
00:11:42
to for Hope and whatever and Faith are your friends and your relationships and that's why like you know in the end it's
00:11:50
not a like a religious exorcism that takes this demon out of her it's their friendship and their bond and their love
00:11:57
for each other ex their history and it is one of those like phrases cat phrases almost that they use to help exactly
00:12:04
it's like all that silly stuff like you know PHS compels you or whatever she's like I love you querly and I love you
00:12:13
dearly all of that is what takes this demon out and I was like that is such it's amazing it's such a unique way of
00:12:20
looking at a story like this and it's like I would listen to this title a hundred more times same the other thing
00:12:27
is the narrator of this title it's performed by um Emily woo Zeller yes I like to say that she has a voice like an
00:12:34
anti- demon an anti- demon indeed her voice was so soothing how beautiful and ironic but in the best way yeah no she
00:12:41
did a great job I love when she does the boy parts cuz she does like all the parts when you're listening to the title
00:12:46
and when she does the boy she's like but it's Wallace talking really well done yeah like he does sound like
00:12:52
that that is Wallace [ __ ] Wallace I found myself in certain parts because I was I just needed to know what happened
00:12:59
I like to listen at like 1.5 speed but there were certain parts where I would slow it down because I needed to like
00:13:05
just capture every sentence and every word and hear all the disturbing things yes yes and you know it's a good title
00:13:13
when you do that right you want to like really take it immerse yourself into it it was one of those titles where like
00:13:18
you you want to get to the end you want to know what happens but I remember being like finished with it and I was
00:13:23
like I don't want to be finished depression yes and what's cool but like and Grady does this really well in all
00:13:31
of his titles um he he has such a way of like balancing comedic elements like levity moments of levity with extreme
00:13:41
horror it's not like it's like he's a little spooky over here and like this is really funny it's like no he's going to
00:13:47
like ruin your life in one chapter and then the next chapter he's going to be like now breathe and it's like the
00:13:53
perfect balance of like he's he's like the radio Silence of writing 100% everybody because they're so good
00:14:04
at like you know balancing that levity in horror like it's a it's a talent and it's and it's like what they do like
00:14:12
that is what they're known for and they are brilliant at it and Grady has that Talent like he has that skill he gives
00:14:19
you that Mo and it's always that moment to just like catch your breath right and
00:14:23
that's like that's why horror is fun like cuz you're you should get that moment of like what did we just see like
00:14:30
what did we just hear cuz there are moment bre yeah cuz there are moments where you're like what is happening
00:14:35
right now and then there are moments where you're cracking up like yeah I was laughing out loud listening to this I
00:14:40
look crazy in my car ites it it almost he has this beautiful way of almost feeling making you feel like you are one
00:14:47
of them you're a part of the girl group you're there yeah you're one of the friends I was saying that to Elina
00:14:53
because it's like I feel like a lot of times in a title you can say oh like I really resonate with that person I'm
00:14:59
definitely like this person but I feel like when I was listening to this I wasn't an Abby I wasn't a Gretchen I
00:15:05
wasn't a Glee or a Margaret like there were Ash yeah part the group yeah exactly or like I saw like a little
00:15:13
piece of me in like all of them know I mean yeah and that's how I felt I felt like I was just me I was just Elena in
00:15:20
the group with them like watching this all happen experiencing it with them getting stressed out when things were
00:15:26
happening worrying about the relationships in the group like work it out you guys I'm like Margaret stop
00:15:31
being a [ __ ] like I was like maret Margaret was a [ __ ] from the beginning she really was I mean she was right from
00:15:37
the jump I was anti- Margaret like because of her horse party yeah I don't want like who wants to go to your horse
00:15:43
party roll rude yeah she's super rude yeah not in the end it sounds like you know she she was what she was she also
00:15:51
kind of just like dipped she did which which makes sense I get it I think after that it's like the fact that Gretchen
00:15:58
and Abby were able to stay friends and Glee even tried for a little bit yeah it sounds like Glee had some stuff going on
00:16:04
but yeah it sounds like Glee was a wreck which I mean who wouldn't be after that
00:16:07
high schol yeah I mean that's traumatizing she tried to dive off a bell tower naked
00:16:13
while throwing fake Love Letters From a priest what was written across her chest
00:16:18
um she has four youu written across across her chest in black marker and she like jumps off naked and then the the
00:16:26
guards are trying to put a blanket over her and and Abby's like you know for you
00:16:31
is bouncing all over the place like and this is for like a young priest at their school at their school and the
00:16:38
letters weren't even written by him he had no idea honestly he's the real victim in this story yeah cuz he looked
00:16:45
like a like he was doing some shady [ __ ] he lost his job and he was like I can't
00:16:50
talk to you yeah what the hell you know what's also scary is that I think like I
00:16:57
mean I experienced some level of bullying more Middle School than high school but there were people doing this
00:17:03
[ __ ] not possessed by demons you know like I I'm in middle school I had someone tell me that like a boy had a
00:17:10
crush on me and he didn't and like it was like it was devastating in a you know a fraction of what happened in this
00:17:17
title but like but it feels like everything at that moment yeah yeah when you're younger everything is so much
00:17:23
more heightened oh yeah like I've told on the on the podcast before I've told the story in Middle School yeah that
00:17:29
these girls invited me to a party and sent me to an abandoned house oh my God nothing will top and my dad was the one
00:17:36
dropping me off I was like so excited and my poor dad a el but he's such a real one and he's such a real he was
00:17:45
like get ice cream cuz I was like I was like what he's like let's go get ice cream like you can talk to me if you
00:17:51
want to but you don't have to I'm like sobbing and he's just like let's get ice cream and that's it people are so mean
00:17:57
and they weren't even possessing by demons yeah my sister I my sister's 2 years older and I so desperately like
00:18:03
wanted to be her friend growing up and one day she invited me to play with her and her friends and they said we're
00:18:09
going to play school but this School Ties you up and oh my God they tied me up to her bed post and left me there and
00:18:20
all went down into the basement to play so mean that's some real big sister [ __ ]
00:18:26
that is big sister [ __ ] and at that point I mean I mean like I we joked that she was possessed by a demon because
00:18:32
there was one time where my dad like literally heard a demonic Voice come out of her mou like get out actually you
00:18:39
just said that yeah you're like there was this one my dad heard this crazy thing it's a longer story but we can get
00:18:45
into it another day um but yeah no people can be mean it's the funny yeah only I have a story and it's only one
00:18:54
little thing but on AIM which like the meanest stuff always happened on I mean aim stories but one that sticks out in
00:19:01
my head was this new boy in my school that was so cute was his friends were like he wants to date you like he's
00:19:08
asking you out and my mom was on the computer and was like oh my God yes definitely and answered the aim for me
00:19:17
and I remember I got home and she was like Josh like beep asked you to be his girlfriend and I said yes for you cuz I
00:19:23
know like you think he's so cute and I was like Mom there's no way that's real like what have you done oh no why nightm
00:19:30
do cuz she was also demonically possessed I'm pretty sure that is some demonically possessed
00:19:38
God but it just goes to show that I think everybody in middle school and high school at some point or another
00:19:43
acts like a demon yeah truly is the victim of a demon a demonic type of person truly like wow that's horrifying
00:19:52
yeah that was a bad one oh that's so sad I know it was horrific and then I had to
00:19:56
go to school the next day and be like I knew that that was I was messing with you yeah like ha tables turned jokes on
00:20:03
you I mean jokes on you now so whatever but some of the nightmare Parts in the book go Way Beyond any of our
00:20:11
experience truly it's there's some part I mean I think we're all thinking we should talk about the nightmare parts
00:20:18
and then we'll talk about our favorite parts to like kind ofer the tapeworm 100% Takes the Cake
00:20:25
the most like visual moment like nightmare inducing moment in the description and how it kept coming oh it
00:20:36
just kept on coming and then the dog oh the dog dog the dog the dog is a homie though the dog he is a homie that is
00:20:44
true and all of that with the really like every time Riley showed up the creepy brother I was so
00:20:50
scared he was the scary I mean did allow Abby into the house despite knowing that
00:20:56
he shouldn't have which true that's very true I didn't give a [ __ ] and he's just
00:21:00
sitting at the counter like reading Hustler with peanut butter fingers that's the part that bothered me the
00:21:05
most peanut butter all over his hands I was like wash your hands no I agree and he came in the room and they said he got
00:21:11
the peanut butter on the door knob and I was like oh and then she's like and we could smell the peanut butter and I was
00:21:17
like for Elena it was worse than the day just that I was like oh my God I'm horrified and then all of a sudden a
00:21:24
tapeworm starts coming out of her mouth and she's heaving it out and the dog's grabbing it and now like this is the
00:21:30
worst nightmare I what was it like 30 something feet long it was ridiculous long the longest they ever seen and then
00:21:37
she had even more oh my God cuz she probably had all the little tapeworm eggs yeah cuz she had you were only
00:21:43
supposed to drink one those crazy one shake total oh one shake ever I thought it was one a day having mple a day cuz
00:21:50
they all had tapeworms in them yeah and then there was and like a close second to that was when Gretchen vomited out
00:21:58
all the feather squir the squir worms that was so weird yeah it was and it they the description
00:22:05
was like pale yeah milk it like with squirmy black feathers in it and I was like what yeah picture it there's a lot
00:22:14
of puke in this story cuz then Wallace also pukes on the football field yeah later on it's a little less and during
00:22:21
the exorcism there's there there's some more puke yeah and that that puke is yellow so it's all very well described
00:22:28
puke did you picture the tape worm like girth wise I pictured it so thick too like I
00:22:36
pictured it barely being like ripping her mouth cuz I think it said at one point it was like inhumanly yeah and I
00:22:43
know tapeworms are traditionally like a white and like like they're thin but I was picturing like a very bulbous like
00:22:49
blood filled I don't know why tapeworm I pictured white still but like so thick and when the dog was like trying to snap
00:22:57
it and it couldn't oh God it was awful it made me think of the troop by Nick Cutter I haven't listened to which I
00:23:05
also highly recommend as a title to listen to um but for warned I just said that reminds me of it
00:23:14
know that but it's also a great book but it the wor something about worms just tapeworms and like parasites and stuff
00:23:22
freak me out my cat once had tapeworms really because she had fle and like she had been eating the fleas and fleas I
00:23:30
guess carry tapeworm eggs they eat tapor eggs and it was gross because these little like rice grains would like be
00:23:38
coming out of her butt because like the tapor would be like breaking off oh my God God that's a hor and the only way to
00:23:47
get rid of them too is to like you know them out or she had to take like a I had
00:23:52
to give her like medicine that like killed it yeah yeah and then you expel it yeah but that was also the sad thing
00:23:58
about this whole tapeworm situation is that she had a tapeworm but her family was starving her yeah yeah I think they
00:24:05
were trying to starve the tapeworm cuz I think like I think that is like a belief
00:24:09
that like it is possible and then you it'll like pass through your system but I think they didn't realize that she had
00:24:14
like 30 something tape on your stomach God but there was a lot it's actually crazy when you look back on the title
00:24:20
because there was a lot of like really foul disgusting stuff like when the exorcism actually takes place oh it's
00:24:26
the roaches and then she like I mean technically it's not Gretchen it's um and and I was wondering how you
00:24:32
pronounce his name I don't know is it andr I added a flare cuz it sounds like you say Andros and I like it but like he
00:24:39
Chomps down on the roach oh oh he's a he's a wly one he is a Wy one Andros was funny too at times I will say well
00:24:49
that's the thing is demons like kind of got some sex appeal sometimes that's why
00:24:54
they get that's why they get inside yeah it's true that's but also one of the one of the
00:25:03
horrifying Parts besides like all the tape worms and like the physical you know like body horror kind of thing was
00:25:10
when it was like the really like chilling Parts where like the birds are all slamming into the house that part
00:25:17
scared the crap out of me yeah I haven't even told my story oh my God yeah yes well that's so Andros is a he's like I
00:25:25
guess he's known to have an owl head in a man's body it's real like demon and demonology so
00:25:32
I'm listening to the title I'm driving home from my hair appointment listening to the title what time of night is this
00:25:37
it's like 10:30 11:00 at night I have I'm creepier we need like a t well I don't know if we be able to cuz I do
00:25:43
swear a lot in it but we need to put the voice note up somewhere you guys I crap
00:25:48
you [ __ ] you not I'm driving down my road about to go home and I see a [ __ ] owl standing in the middle of my
00:25:56
neighborhood I've never seen an in my life before other than like at the zoo and what are the odds that I'm listening
00:26:03
to this title where they're talking about an owl demon it's Andress and there's an owl horrifying I'm never
00:26:10
going to be over it it's just Andress being like hey never going to be over it what's cuz you've asked me the question
00:26:15
Elena before like I think it's like a question people ask each other of like how many owls would you have to see
00:26:20
before you thought something was up and I so correct and I always said one too I
00:26:25
was like I see one owl I'm being like what's going on I always said too cuz I'm like one owl's not that crazy one
00:26:31
owl is that crazy it is that crazy especially given the fact that you're reading this title at the exact time
00:26:36
it's 10:30 at night yeah no it it's like right outside your home that feels invasive luckily it was like a little
00:26:43
bit far it was like kind of in front of our neighbor so like shout out to them I
00:26:46
don't know what you're going but I will say that whole book club scene yes was really unsettling oh my God yeah cuz
00:26:55
Gretchen like presses and starts singing at the top of the stairs doesn't she push him too he slaps her and then she
00:27:03
pushes him down the stairs and it's like as all the birds are slamming into the house and the owls are tearing them
00:27:11
apart like the Pelican and [ __ ] and gr's Mom is drunk's mom is just drunk ab's
00:27:17
like I have to go work at the yogurt shop and then there's another lady there's like two ladies reciting the
00:27:22
Lord's Prayer I was like this sounds over stimulation when I say over stimulation station like I would be in I
00:27:29
would be in orbit like I would be gone yeah I don't know how Abby didn't like I mean eventually she does run out of
00:27:35
there but damn I would lose my mind that is so scary unsettling is the best way to describe that scene cuz there is so
00:27:44
much happening yeah and that's also early on in the story where no one even believes that it's an exorcist or a
00:27:51
demon situation yeah and you don't even like you're not really sure yet from the
00:27:57
name of the title of you know yeah you wouldn't know but you wonder if there's like a Twist or something like well
00:28:03
you're wondering if it's like um like symbolizing something else it's like a metaphor for some kind of transformation
00:28:09
like when your friend is not your friend anymore right when your when people Evol
00:28:14
kind of it does do both it is yeah it's perfect for that I think it's a metaphor
00:28:18
in a lot of different ways definitely and also while we're talking about like the actual possession itself there's a
00:28:24
lot of theories out there as to if Gretchen was was possessed in the woods like after they dropped LSD or if she
00:28:32
was possessed even before that at bible camp and then it really just started to like ramp up yeah that's actually
00:28:39
because you brought this up before we were recording and I was like should we wait but I because I fully believed it
00:28:43
happened in the woods me too because in my mind it was like they were it could have been Abby I thought that like had
00:28:52
Abby gotten lost yeah it would have been her yep um but that's interesting especially given the Andy Andy
00:29:02
conversation thing like who was she talking to I need to go back and listen because what I saw I I was on like a a
00:29:10
couple discussion boards just kind of like reading what other people were theorizing yeah and what they were
00:29:15
saying was that she mentions talking to Andy like before before she gets quote unquote possessed in the woods like
00:29:22
before you're led to believe that she gets possessed in the woods and then he says oh I haven't talked to her since
00:29:28
summer camp right so it's like so I think she had to have been possessed probably at summer camp that's so
00:29:34
interesting yeah yeah because it's like a never address cuz Abby even says like she's annoyed by the fact that Gretchen
00:29:41
has this like boy yep that she met at summer camp and now prioritizes yep but then at the same time she says she's
00:29:48
talking to Andy is she calling Andress Andy like to try because obviously it's Notting yeah cuz that's that would make
00:29:57
sense you know this also brings up a point when Abby does call the number that she thinks is Andy's and Gretchen
00:30:05
answers Gretchen's like Soul answers so there I just got chill that part was cuz
00:30:11
that confuses me a little bit so that confused me too but I found another [ __ ] thing on the discussion boards
00:30:16
because I didn't even catch this and I wonder if you did Elena did catch it so when so Gretchen's Soul essentially is
00:30:23
like trapped in the phone lines because which also kind of makes you wonder was it did she get possessed out there
00:30:30
because when she is in like that like little Shack in the woods remember she sees that little like phone like what's
00:30:38
it how would I describe it the phone company thing the phone company logo and she hears that like buzzing like
00:30:44
electrical buzzing and it's the same buzzing that she hears when she calls that number okay so this is interesting
00:30:50
so what if it did happen at bible camp MH and then she is talking to Andress on the phone and like
00:30:58
basically they swap places like she lets Andress into her and her soul is now like stuck in the phone line yeah I
00:31:05
could see I see what you're saying like at bible camp if she like because one of
00:31:09
the things that they say during the exorcism it like brother lemon which we will get into hero of the century hero
00:31:17
love brother lemon he said during the exorcism that like you're going to be kind of like open and raw during this
00:31:24
exorcism cuz we're going to be like saying all these Bible verses and like all these powerful things that like you
00:31:29
know using our faith and that's going to leave you open to being possessed yourself right so what if AB Bible Camp
00:31:37
she became raw and open from being exposed to all that she was exposed to there she came back they dropped LSD she
00:31:46
got lost she went to that ex that little cottage in the woods and some there's some kind seem like there was a trigger
00:31:53
there and that was where it entered and that's why you can communicate with that
00:31:58
part and maybe it was like the phone lines because of the electricity I yeah in Bible Camp when she became like
00:32:07
raw and open to it that's the thing when I was listening it was just like all most of that was just lost on me and I
00:32:12
just assumed that she dropped LSD she jumped off and there maybe there was like some kind of portal to that right
00:32:18
especially because people had used that Shack for Satanic rituals but now I think I'm a full believer that it
00:32:23
happened at bible camp me too I think it All Began there yeah you guys have to let us know what you think like like in
00:32:29
the comments yeah I want to I want to see because also I a pull I read that like Andy's last name is Solomon which
00:32:36
is referencing King Solomon which is hella biblical which in the Bible I guess he became like in some parts in
00:32:42
some thoughts he became a powerful King through the help of demons like demons helped
00:32:49
him see this makes me love grd even more it's so smart yeah he just kills it with
00:32:55
that stuff like you go back and you're like [ __ ] it like you know what you're doing like it's so impressive It is Well
00:33:03
we talked about our nightmare parts and I guess we kind of talked about some of our favorite Parts even just like
00:33:07
through that but let's go deeper into our favorite Parts okay I mean the lemon Brothers wi the bodybuilding for God and
00:33:17
that's a real thing yeah bodybuilders what is it is it body builders for Christ for Christ is a thing I've seen
00:33:24
it on Instagram yep bodybuilding for Christ I mean you can do anything for Christ you absolutely can pretty much
00:33:30
yeah if you really think about it it's a whole thing there's a hashtag bb4 Christ
00:33:34
number four BBC B before Christ bbfc bbfc it says welcome to bodybuilding for Christ where faith and fitness unite so
00:33:43
they're like real really pretty much what they said they honor God I [ __ ] fit like I loved the moment where it's
00:33:53
the school assembly and they asked the what's the guy's name I'm Wallace it's like it's almost like non-
00:33:59
memorable because F Wallace but but like they ask all the guys to come up and lift the thing and then the guy does it
00:34:06
by himself brother lemon like took four of you guys and he does like the he like
00:34:12
puts it like the cross yeah you had to do it in the shape of the Cross he's like it's stronger in a cross the power
00:34:17
of Christ allows me to do anything and they're just like delightful like they are delightful I love them and he's
00:34:24
always talking about his daddy and daddy the one yeah he just loves the dad yeah
00:34:29
were you guys ever second guessing him when he showed her like all the stuff that he had in his van for the exorcism
00:34:36
and the GHB part like how there was like two baggies and she was like why are there two I was a little worried that
00:34:42
like it might be taking a turn and like maybe we were being led to believe that he was like like a helpful Exorcist and
00:34:49
really he was going to turn out to be like another demon I had a moment of wondering if he had some nefarious
00:34:53
intent with the van but it was only a second I never doubted him because of his strength um of his strength because of
00:35:02
the power of Christ and all I I only doubted him when the exorcism was actually happening yeah yeah and I think
00:35:09
he just lost himself in it and later he says it like that's why he does what he does I don't want I mean should I can I
00:35:16
spoil I don't know I mean we spoil like when he takes the blame yes and he says like I he I think he
00:35:25
mentions how he won like he trained for 2 years for like the the most muscles in
00:35:30
the entire Universe competition or whatever it is and he says and he's like and I can't remember what music I was
00:35:36
listening that I played while I did that competition I was training for 2 years but I can remember every second of me
00:35:42
like launching salt into that girl's face the boiling water like the boiling water like and then when he was asking
00:35:48
for the what was it amonia I was like oh my God like no like now you're killing her
00:35:54
physical body yeah that got so scary that a horrific part that is the scary thing about exorcisms generally because
00:36:03
and I think has brought up a lot of debate about how like um moral some of these exorcisms are because yeah there's
00:36:11
like sometimes like four muscular people holding down like this tiny frail body and like breaking bones of people in the
00:36:19
name of exercising a demon but like but how far how far is too far right exactly
00:36:25
it's a fine line I would say yeah Def and you can tell like he reached that point and was like I have to go like I
00:36:32
have to go get my dad and just the way that he turns himself in he's so sweet and then the conversation that they end
00:36:38
up having years and years later that was one of the most wholesome moments ever I
00:36:42
know I'm glad that they had that they could reconnect I'm so glad they had that and then the other wholesome thing
00:36:47
that absolutely just ruined me I also cried listening to this part cuz aby's Dad the whole way through like you can
00:36:52
tell she loves her dad like she loves her parents but she has a tough relationship with them and her dad
00:36:58
never does anything like he's very passive even in the meeting where the mom tells off major he's like he gets a
00:37:04
little spp a little funny thing in that one what did say when she says like he's
00:37:09
never liked you yeah she's like you always kissed up and kicked down to him and she's like we never liked you and
00:37:14
the dad says now that's not entirely true I just never thought about you long enough to develop an opinion and I was
00:37:20
like oh but is worse and that's what we saw like the first part of his personality come through and I was like
00:37:26
I think I might like this and then when I knew I [ __ ] Lov this guy was at the end when obviously like so Abby and
00:37:34
Gretchen get separated because like it's this whole big court case and I mean people think that Abby tried to kill gr
00:37:40
and yada y y know that whole thing yeah but you can't keep two best friends apart so they find a way to each other
00:37:45
and Mr lay Gretchen's dad is like super pissed off about it and finally Abby's dad just tells him off and it's like
00:37:52
dude they're going to be friends through whatever like if they can figure out how
00:37:55
to pay the phone bill and if they want to write letters to each other let them like who are we to keep them apart yeah
00:38:02
and he like can't you see it's tearing them up inside like he says like I'm seeing it tear my kid up like I can't do
00:38:08
this because there is no love like a best friend really truly it's true that was one of my Absolut really I loved
00:38:15
that it was great and I loved during the exorcism when brother lemon there I just
00:38:20
loved like the way he like his lines are some of the funniest things he are cuz he's so serious about them but he says
00:38:27
I'll be doing some serious blasting of prayer you're not girded with the full armor of God you might not make it
00:38:33
through with your soul and like he's such a meat head he is but also like God meat head but like it's this weird
00:38:41
combination that you wouldn't necessarily put together no I'm going to do some serious blasting of prayer like
00:38:47
it's just like what absolutely incredible did you catch the little True Crime reference at the end what when
00:38:53
he's wearing uh Joey butafuko pants oh I I did hear that yeah Joey B fuko's mistress was the Long
00:39:00
Island Lolita and she like tried to assassinate his wife after like a Year's long I didn't know that wow yeah yeah it
00:39:09
was a little rough there but he's wear with those those little Easter eggs so good so Ken and I ended up talking to
00:39:16
Chad and Carrie Hayes who wrote the con the first Conjuring film in like uh House of Wax and stuff like that they
00:39:23
went to this town in India and I'm forgetting the name I think it's AR was C but it's a town where they perform
00:39:28
exorcisms wow and they went to this town they went up to this like church and they're performing all these exorcisms
00:39:35
and the guide that they were with was like either of you want to be possessed by a low-level demon because a lowlevel
00:39:41
demon and they're both like nah I'm good but like because they're just exercising
00:39:46
demons there is this question of now what happens to the demon where do we put them right because it's it's it's
00:39:51
like a tapeworm which is also an interesting oh the story where it needs in order to survive it needs a host
00:39:59
needs to feed off someone so where does Andress Go I mean part two we need a second book we do I know
00:40:08
he said he doesn't do sequels he's not a sequel guy he said he loves sequels you
00:40:12
never know but he doesn't he said he doesn't do them just don't call it a sequel don't call it a comeback
00:40:18
yeah but um the southern book clubs guy to slaying vampires another Title by grd
00:40:23
Hendrick takes place in the same neighborhood but he said this book is is about the kids that one's about the
00:40:29
adults well and so I was asking Alena univers oh I was asking because I wonder if the book club is the book club that
00:40:38
Abby's mom or sorry Gretchen's mom was like getting drunk that is wild and it's a great title I'm listening to yeah it's
00:40:48
you know what's interesting is I didn't realize that that took place in chareston yeah and I almost feel like
00:40:53
the town of Charleston plays a such a large role in this in a way it didn't in that one because
00:41:00
it was more about the like community and the book club whereas this was I think like economics did play a lot more of a
00:41:07
role in this title so how Charleston I love the way that he that gr describes like Charleston is all these like
00:41:15
massive beautiful homes that are on the outside so maintained but the second you
00:41:20
go inside they're like decrepit and people are losing so much money trying to keep them alive which is like a
00:41:26
metaphor for all these families absolutely so true yeah it plays a huge role in it yeah and there's even like
00:41:32
they talk about a girl that they that there's like a rumor she got like M um sacrificed by like satanists and in that
00:41:40
right yeah in in that Shack or near that Shack like in those woods definitely and
00:41:44
her name is Molly Ravenel and if you watch southern charm on Southern Charm shout outs lately I was going to say
00:41:51
we're from the charm all the time and it's like the Ravenel Bridge and like the Ravenel are like a huge
00:41:58
and in politics like for a minute they're like a political family there like there's a Ravenel Bridge in
00:42:04
Charleston like all that can we talk about the body one the baby but then also they
00:42:10
were saying Molly's body was buried like they kind of plant it but you never go into it where Gretchen's like we need to
00:42:16
be like we need to dig her up give her a Christian barrial yeah I I am curious that if they actually went to that spot
00:42:23
would her body be there I know that's is it a rumor or is it real and was that Gretchen saying that or was that Andress
00:42:29
Andress trying to get Abby to go somewhere where she shouldn't have been I think that was Gretchen still because
00:42:37
I think she was still in the throws of allowing Andress to fully take over take over but even when she's in that period
00:42:46
She does say things to Abby like he tells me things about everyone else even you mhm y so he could have told her that
00:42:53
he could have told her that that's true yeah and still be trying to lead her out
00:42:57
there I feel like it was a way to lead her someplace she shouldn't have been because he specifically really wanted to
00:43:02
destroy Abby because I think he saw her obviously and rightfully so is the biggest threat threat yeah he knew that
00:43:08
he she could be the one to to expel him no one loves baby in the bag is like okay wait that can go back to one of the
00:43:15
scariest parts dark as hell the first of all disturbing no Max guys oh God Max does the dog die.com yes dog Max is one
00:43:29
of the most brutal things about this no one prepared me for that I was not ready
00:43:34
says like that's the one thing she can't get over yeah MH but also the one thing
00:43:38
that's kept them friends for as long as they were able to be is that Abby is the
00:43:43
only one who knows that that wasn't Gretchen everyone else thinks she's just a vious dog boy Max good boy Max good
00:43:50
boy Max and you so dumb with the maxi pads all stuck I loved that dog it reminded me of FL say he had such blanch
00:43:59
Vibes and I was like no and he's just like breaking into the neighbor's track yeah he's just living you know he's just
00:44:04
living his like oh it broke 41 for yeah truly truly that was yeah I think that was like the biggest yeah that destroyed
00:44:13
me yeah yeah whose baby was it though sorry going back to that cuz I feel like I cut myself off twice later but it was
00:44:19
from that um when they go see that like Body Farm kind of place oh the bucket full of them basically like a specimen
00:44:28
like a donated uh medical specimen that somebody stole gret there was a moment I
00:44:33
think because it was so shocking that I was like like like whose baby like are we not going to talk about that she
00:44:41
killed a baby like what the Yeah it was that it must have been a donated specimen at the Cav lab and then they
00:44:48
stole it so she was always going to be known as a baby stealer a cadav specimen and that was like another thing that
00:44:54
kept them tethered gron was the only one who knew that she didn't really actually yeah I did love during the
00:45:01
exorcism there's so many great moments during the exorcism it's such a crescendo to the whole thing right when
00:45:07
it says Andress blew an ex an exhausted raspberry I was I lost it I was like Andress you're pretty funny like I was
00:45:14
like that's pretty good that was another like off right and then he said and when
00:45:21
she was like um when she's like I know who you are you're Andress you're like the purveyor of Hell or whatever you are
00:45:27
and he says so you've heard of me so [ __ ] what like I love deal yeah I was like [ __ ] if you weren't like really
00:45:35
mean this and a demon possessing her best friend if you wen't a demon possessing my best friend we can hang
00:45:41
out and you got I would love to like sit down and interview a demon yeah that would be be really cool I don't think
00:45:49
that's possible but no you a girl can a girl can dream a girl can dream yeah someday let's we'll do it we'll get
00:45:58
there we'll get there we'll figure it out where there's a will but there's a way you know yeah did you guys know that
00:46:04
this is also been made into a movie yes I really we should do like a movie night
00:46:09
oh my God we should I just picked it for um my scream pick so we should watch it
00:46:15
so now we have to watch it yeah we have 100 so you do it for spooky Halloween night I love it okay perfect boom I'll
00:46:23
host it if you guys want me to but if it wasn't a movie I have cast the entire thing and so has Elena yes the entire
00:46:30
thing meaning the four main girls yes the entire thing that's literally the whole block so for Abby I did May
00:46:38
Whitman that's great that is a great one I feel like I just like pretty much pictured like somebody like May the
00:46:44
whole way through like you were saying I don't picture like famous people as the
00:46:48
characters but when you go back you're like yeah she that yeah for Gretchen I did Anya Taylor Joy love her love her
00:46:56
she is like so unique looking that specifically possessed she would scare the [ __ ] out of you horrifying oh yeah
00:47:03
and then Margaret I did Kieran and shipka who plays Sabrina I love that cuz I just feel like Margaret like
00:47:09
definitely had like pretty girl privilege and I feel like kin is so pretty right that you know you could see
00:47:15
that you could see that I could see that and then for Glee I didn't I had a hard
00:47:19
time kind of Pi I don't know about you guys I had a hard time picturing Glee throughout I think the name was hard for
00:47:25
me yeah I kept picturing the show every time I was like wait who's Glee and then
00:47:30
I had to get get back yeah so I had a hard time but every time she was brought up I did picture somebody with like
00:47:36
brown hair and like a like like a I don't know I just pictured like a Lily Collins I think H okay a very pretty
00:47:43
Glee yeah pretty Glee yeah so that's my cast I feel like they're all like pretty
00:47:47
girls you know just a just a group of pretty girls pretty Southern Carolina girls yes see mine I thought of Abby I
00:47:55
thought Maya Hawk Maya Hawk does have that Vibe yeah like especially her character in stranger
00:48:02
things I could see that's exactly I was thinking of and Gretchen I thought I couldn't decide and Mikey gave me one of
00:48:10
these and I was like I can't decide between this now I was thinking Zena didn't gr Hendrick say Grady
00:48:17
Hendrick actually said he would cast Zen scetch in okay and then Mikey brought up
00:48:22
stie sink from stranger things Max and I thought she would be great too I could either of those I could also see STI
00:48:29
sink as Glee yeah actually that might be that's a decent one too maybe that's how
00:48:34
it works out maybe that is how it so we still get her in the movie you know cuz then I had to go back cuz for Margaret
00:48:41
and Glee I was struggling yeah it's it was tough and for Margaret I was like let me go back in time and I'm going to
00:48:47
say Thora Birch when from like now and then days yes right I mean this is your dream cast you can this my dream I can
00:48:54
go back in time yeah exactly yeah The Time Machine exists in this scenario exact cuz then Glee Christina Richi oh I
00:49:03
think would be pretty good cuz couldn't you picture her like jumping off the bell tower like a dramatic actress you
00:49:09
know very much so yeah I think you did a really good job thank you I think you did a really good job I think you both
00:49:13
did a really good job thank you yeah especially cuz I didn't do it so you both did perfect we'll just smash
00:49:20
them together I do feel like a Wallace would be one of the like rap boys that are like in right now you know oh who
00:49:26
would he be he would be um [ __ ] what's his name I'll Choke by no killer baby oh
00:49:36
that guy Jack harlo Jack harlo would be Wallace yeah wow yeah yeah I feel like the whole Euphoria cast could be like
00:49:43
cast in this I feel like Angus would make a great Wallace even though he's so beautiful actually no actually Wallace
00:49:51
was too I was going to say I think he's like kind he's not uh yeah he's not brother lemon who's Brother lemon okay
00:50:00
oh we got to think of a meat head like a lovable meat head brother lemon lovable
00:50:05
meat head oh like a Zach Efron especially like him from um Zon I think would be yes would definitely be a
00:50:13
brother lemon I could see that yeah I think he actually I think Zack Eon might be that z e you're see you did
00:50:24
it he did it to be honest exacted he did the work for me all right so to end let's answer the questions
00:50:32
from the quiz yeah the quizes that appear throughout through they have the quizzes from like the you know the teen
00:50:39
magazine that they're reading do you remember doing these of course my whole life was doing this yes okay should I
00:50:46
read the first one yes are you driving away your best friend you both swore to study for the big English test together
00:50:53
suddenly she cancels do you a assume she got a better offer and spend the afternoon feeling rejected B blow it off
00:51:01
sometimes these things happen C call her and demand she tell you the real reason
00:51:06
why or D give her the silent treatment if she won't study with you you won't talk to her honestly probably mixture of
00:51:13
the first and the last one I would feel like super rejected and then give the silent treat
00:51:20
give the silent treatment I would call and demand to know the real reason I knew that you were going to say that I
00:51:25
would blow it off sometimes these things happen all right so we all are coming there I do think like answering them now
00:51:32
is one thing but like sometimes like I'll answer the next one putting myself in like my high school my teenage self I
00:51:39
think my answer would still ring true for my teenage self even for that first one I think my teenage self would be
00:51:45
like so heartbroken yeah like feel rejected yeah that would have been my teenage self too yeah all right so let's
00:51:51
answer them as our teenage s from this point we should answer them as both yeah okay all right second question your best
00:51:58
friend says she's stressed out and needs a break so she's canceling your plans to
00:52:01
double date this Friday a what a relief you didn't want to go either B this friendship is over C cancel your date
00:52:09
and go to her house instead she must need to talk D your poor date now what else are you going to talk about on
00:52:14
Friday night I think High School C I'd be like oh my God what's going on she needs to talk to me and now a because I
00:52:21
never want to go anywhere same same that's a would be me now cuz I'd be like sweet also as you're wearing a homebody
00:52:28
sweatshirt as I'm wearing a home body sweatshirt and I was going to say between C and D for teenage me yeah cuz
00:52:36
I was likely a lot more selfish then so I probably would have been like oh no I'm going out see you going so low by I
00:52:45
feel like a and C would ring true for me like back then and now yeah yeah I agree
00:52:50
me too yeah I probably was usually the one cancelling because I was always grounded for like a month for
00:52:58
okay your bestie shows up at school on Monday sporting a brand new do that she didn't tell you about it's radical it's
00:53:04
expensive and makes her look like a poodle you a tell her it looks great that's what friends are for B pretend
00:53:10
nothing's happened after all if you can't say something nice dot do dot C burst out laughing at least it's not you
00:53:17
or D be brutally honest someone's got to say it I think probably I'd have less control in high school and burst out
00:53:25
laughing so see and then now I would do a and just feel like if I don't have anything nice to say don't say anything
00:53:31
I do think it depends also on their reaction like if yeah if if she thinks it looks great then I would be like yeah
00:53:37
it does or well actually even if she said it looks horrible I'd be like it doesn't look that bad you will grow out
00:53:44
so you just reassure I don't I'm I tend to be brutally honest correct but I don't ever want to hurt someone's
00:53:52
feelings ever and I don't like yucking someone's yum I don't think you're brutally honest I think you're tactfully
00:53:58
honest thank you I hope so cuz I don't like yucking someone's yum like that yeah yeah like I'll tell
00:54:04
you for real if you need the real [ __ ] like I will happily do that and you've always but I like to like bum someone
00:54:12
out right yeah if I don't want an answer about something I won't ask alinaa but if I need like a a honest like true true
00:54:19
answer I'm like you'll tell me sometimes you won't ask it cuz you know the answer
00:54:24
you're going to get you doesn't want to I'm like don't tell me that I know what I'm doing yeah okay last one your best
00:54:30
friend doesn't have time for you anymore do you a keep calling until she tells you why you deserve an explanation B
00:54:36
respect her wishes you don't want to be needy C tell everyone you rejected her first who does she think she is D refus
00:54:44
to accept it this friendship is over when you say it's over all right so high school
00:54:49
C i' be like I didn't want to be her friend and then now that's like your mom answering
00:54:58
the it rang true and then now I feel like be respect her wishes now but not because I wouldn't want to be needy just
00:55:06
because I'd be like all right if you don't want to be my friend then I don't want to be your friend right you knowa I
00:55:12
would probably I'm like a I would probably be a you need an answer I need an answer
00:55:18
too like give me tell me like be grow up tell me what's going on so that we can snip if we need to snip that's me now
00:55:25
and that's me especially if I did something wrong like I deserve to know because like as a human being I want to
00:55:32
grow like if I did something to hurt you like please tell me yeah and then but in
00:55:38
in high school/ Middle School I was such a pushover and like emotional that I always felt like I would have respected
00:55:47
her wishes and not wanted to be needy and then just cry in the bathroom or something see gross all gross check that
00:55:56
out okay this was so much fun I love thanks for having me thank you for coming on that was amazing thank you to
